Only other card game I've seen so far. great job!

itskdog 2022-04-04 23:14

@delightfullymad Hoped you liked it. It can be hard at first.

stamestratagem 2022-04-05 00:11

This is awesome :D I played for over an hour. I even have favourite cardsets now

itskdog 2022-04-05 10:01

@stamestratagem That's awesome. It can be addicting.

stamestratagem 2022-04-05 11:12

I came back to tell you that I played more than an hour again. I've consumed like 30 lifes in the last run, I think I can't even die anymore, I fall REALLY long levels and I NEED a save function :D

stamestratagem 2022-04-05 12:43

Group 2.png

this will be a nice round

itskdog 2022-04-05 13:07

@stamestratagem that's so great! I love how much money you have. There is a point where you can lose. I'm going to add a feature that increases the amount of coins it cost to continue. Also going to had obstacles like a spike ball that would cause you to lose coins. They would appear in later runs. Tell others about this game.

stamestratagem 2022-04-05 13:15

@itskdog I told about it to my friends but I think you should make a blogpost to the feed so people could find this more easiliy

sodoj 2022-04-05 21:20

A very interesting concept! I'd suggest you to keep developing it, something great might come out of it. Good job!

andy-beers 2022-04-05 21:29

Cool concept. a few comments: 1. it's frustrating to not be able to move left and right very fast 2. I wish i could queue up cards before the fall starts 3. Looks like a UI bug where it will always 'deal' 5 cards at the start? or at least one extra one.

Great job! it's a really polished game for 48 hours and I think scaling the replay with the same deck amount would fix the infinite possibilities

itskdog 2022-04-05 21:45

@sodoj I think I will develop it. @andy-beers The movement to side was done on purpose because there is a card that allows for faster movement. The card animation is not correct. The animation begins and the card is placed in your hand already. A queuing system might be good, but I do like think about what to play. I plan on having the cost to replay increase as well as making it harder as you gain more and more coins. Kinda like level when you reach a certain amount of coins.

jesus-gonzalez 2022-04-06 04:49

:( The itch.io link is broken. If you ever fix it please let me know by replying to this message.

itskdog 2022-04-06 10:05

@jesus-gonzalez Should be working now.

tescoone 2022-04-06 17:27

I found your game quite hard to play :p would have been cool if we could keep some of the upgrades from one fall to the other !

itskdog 2022-04-06 21:03

@tescoone Thanks for your feedback. It can be a little tricky at first. I think it is a game that you get better as you know the cards better. Most of the upgrades are timed based. This way I could make more powerful versions of those cards. I might add some cards that would be last in further rounds, but that might make it too easy. There's already players that are getting more than 2000 coins and 30 lives.

zimny11 2022-04-06 21:23

This is simply great! Really cool game. I like the art style, music and sound effects. A few ideas if you are interested in developing this further: permanent bonuses (that you lose if you die and don't have coins to buy the next round) and obstacles/enemies to avoid. Also, if the cost of continuing the game would go up each time players dies, that would put a pressure on the player to get more and more coins, extending the game loop. Simply, awesome and impressive work, especially for a Compo entry!

itskdog 2022-04-06 21:45

@zimny11 Thanks so much. I do plan on developing it and all your ideas I plan to use. Most have been mentioned or I thought of already, but your idea of permanent bonuses that you need to have coins sounds really good. Thinking of having a level progression as you collect more coins.

ballen 2022-04-07 02:18

Quite bossy for someone trying to get us to help him from falling to his death - must say I love how snarky the little dude is. The way you conveyed instructions was also super helpful and worked in well in my opinion

lectvs 2022-04-07 03:51

I did not think this game was going to be as deep as it was, but once I realized the point of the game was to loop multiple times and build up your deck, this turned into one of the most interesting games I've played so far! I think I'd like to see a bit slower of a fall, because it's a bit hard to focus on the cards as well, but I really enjoyed playing this! Excellent work, especially for a compo game!

itskdog 2022-04-07 10:05

@ballen I'm glad you liked the tutorial and I'm glad I was able to put it in my game. It was the last thing I did. @lectvs When I thought of the idea I wasn't sure how it would play. I was surprised as well.

eggsscrambled 2022-04-09 00:50

very unique idea / concept I really enjoyed it! some UI reworks or organization would be great though.

itskdog 2022-04-09 00:58

@eggsscrambled Thanks for playing. I will definitely fix some of the UI.

jovialknoll 2022-04-09 01:04

I really liked the core idea here! I kind of wanted individual sections to last a little longer, it felt like it took me too many falls to get a better feel for the game; probably you could still preserve a desired feeling of franticness even with somewhat longer levels or slower base speed.

Graphics and audio were good.

itskdog 2022-04-09 01:18

@jovialknoll Thanks for the feedback. I think I tried too hard to fit the theme. I wanted the character to die right away and let the player try using the cards for more control. I didn't want it to where the player could easily collect the cards without having to use a card.

slurpeethief 2022-04-09 03:21

Loved it! Very clever idea! Had a ton of fun playing this. Reached ~400 coins then discovered a game-breaking bug which was that I played a draw 3, rather than draw 3 cards it tried to draw cards until my hand size reached 4. This meant I could play cards infinitely if I clicked fast enough (cycled through my deck 10+ times) by the end of it, the level was so long that it took 5+ minutes to fall to the bottom. So just an fyi, but I still had a blast!

Great work!

itskdog 2022-04-09 03:23

@slurpeethief I'm glad you liked it and that you found a bug. I don't think anyone had that one. This will help me fix it.

eli-delventhal 2022-04-09 05:42

Really solid entry, I gave high marks for innovation because I've never seen anything quite like this. I see the potential here for a post-compo update. As it stands, the balance doesn't feel quite right, and I don't really feel like there are super meaningful choices (which is really important to me in a deck builder). Basically the strategy was to get rid of all the weight cards asap and burn whatever I have when I was about to crash, and then smash through all the other cards very quickly. More interesting and varied levels, maybe multiplicative card effects, etc could help for a post compo. Nice work!

nanolotl 2022-04-09 05:43

Definitely some interesting ideas here. The fact that the default sideways movement is so slow makes that part of the game feel quite inconsequential and that only the cards matter. I had fun with it, and is very innovative. With some tweaks it could be even better. Good job

infecsean 2022-04-09 06:33

Really cool idea to mix the card game genre with this gameplay, unique, i like it. The lil green guy had a pretty interesting personality. Overall quite a good experience.

itskdog 2022-04-09 07:14

@eli-delventhal I think it is very different. Wasn't really sure how good it would be. You are right about some of the decisions making during the game. I will be developing this game. @nanolotl That's what I wanted. I want the user to play cards to control the character and the environment. @infecsean I do like the character and how he was able to also guide the player a little.

itskdog 2022-04-09 07:37

@sodoj @lectvs @ballen @zimny11 @nanolotl @tescoone @infecsean @andy-beers @jovialknoll @jesus-gonzalez @eli-delventhal @slurpeethief @ballen @stamestratagem @delightfullymad Thanks again for playing. I know everyone is pretty busy, but I wanted to see if I could get some feedback on the art. I do like the style of a retro arcade game, but do you think it will be better if I make it more cartoonish?

sagiii 2022-04-09 07:48

Hello! The concept is cool even if I didn't liked the game. The cards system is still pretty interesting. Mix the sounds volume and make it lower!!!! The sound at the start is ok tier but the dialogues sound is too loud compared to the other SFX. Anyway you should explore more on the concept because I think you can do something even better.

itskdog 2022-04-09 07:56

@sagiii Thanks for the feedback. I will definitely check the sound levels or change the sound for the dialogues.

zimny11 2022-04-09 07:57

@itskdog It is hard to tell, which art style you should use. I'm guessing anyone you ask will give you a different answer. From my perspective, the art style you have, works completely fine for me. Then again, the more detail pixel art the better (of course to a reasonable extent).

fredrik-rosell 2022-04-09 11:15

What a great game! Gave it high scores overall. My only minor complaint would be that some sound effects were a bit loud.

itskdog 2022-04-09 11:18

@fredrik-rosell Thank you so much. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Getting the sound not to be too loud is really tricky. Something I will have to learn how to do better.

jovialknoll 2022-04-09 15:40

@itskdog honestly I think the cohesiveness of the style matters more for this type of game than exactly what style you have. In this case the style feels pretty cohesive, but I'm sure that a more cartoon-y style could also work.

bentglasstube 2022-04-09 17:45

I feel like the default level is a bit too short so you hardly have time to do much at first until you get some cards. Pretty unique concept to combine this arcade type game with deck building. I think personally the art style would have worked better as more cartoonish. The pixel art was fine but everything was different sized pixels which made it a little incoherent and didn't really feel like true pixel art.

itskdog 2022-04-09 17:55

@bentglasstube Thanks for playing. You are probably right about the first level is too short. I kinda wanted it for the theme. After a little practice, it's not too bad. Might make like a beginner's level with specific cards you start with to help. I think most people want to be able to grab all the coins right away, but I want the player to rely on playing the cards and figuring out how to get the coins after they have died. Thanks for playing.

salier 2022-04-09 18:53

The "rush to think" theme is quite present and it's quite nice. The countdown at the start give you a few seconds to plan on how you'll use the cards you've been dealt, adding another layer. Too bad i got into that endless draw bug too soon so i couldn't really experiment afterwards but a really nice game!

ballen 2022-04-09 18:58

I really like the arcade style you have going on currently. However, admittedly I think it being more cartoonish would definitely give your game that extra oomph. It would take your character (who already has quite the personality) a step forward and as someone who enjoys more cartoon/anime/colorful art style, I feel like it would make the cards pop and stand out more as well @itskdog

itskdog 2022-04-09 19:04

@sailer I'm glad you enjoyed playing. Sorry, you ran into that bug.

@ballen Thanks for the input. I can really draw either style. I think you are right that a cartoonish look might make it pop.

ribout-horace 2022-04-09 19:43

The talking gobelins and the overall idea is great! But the "polish" is not on point and the lack of certain feedback doesn't help to really understand what happen (the fact that some card stay from fall to fall, that we stay in the "same pit" etc..) but once it's understood, the gameloop is good and the mixed of playgame and reflex game is a clever idea! Nicely find and nicely executed! (even with the flaws)

pordrack 2022-04-09 19:51

Very intersting ! Your game is original and refreshing, the execution is fine for a jam game and graphics are nice. The balance isn't that great but in 3 days I don't think you could have done really better than that. But the foundations are solid. Oh and sound is nice. How and I think the magnet is waaay too weak, I didn't feel any difference when I actiavted it.

itskdog 2022-04-09 20:02

@ribout-horace Thanks for the feedback. I wanted to have more feedback but ran out of time. Some cards have to be removed after playing like the "Life". I did have some ideas for cards that would last from fall to fall.

@pordrack I'm glad you like it. You are right that the magnet feels weak. When you play it, it only collects coins near it once at a certain radius. Probably need an animation that shows the coins coming to you. But there is a more powerful version of it. I want to add a card that increases your grab distance for a certain amount of time.

0x746564 2022-04-09 21:17

Interesting concept with the deck building element.

Sometimes it felt like their were too few coins. At least once there was a level with only 1 coin that I could see. I could have missed the others.

Audio and graphics are fun.

I would be interested in playing a post-jam version of this concept!

itskdog 2022-04-09 21:39

@0x746564 Thanks for playing. There are sometimes when there are not enough coins. It's kinda why you want to buy cards that add more coins to the level. I do plan on developing this game. I fixed the drawing of cards and increased the continued cost. I'm working to add obstacles. I think after I add everything I want to, then I will focus on balance for the game.

conradoclark 2022-04-09 23:41

I love this idea, great job! I think I'd be nice to move a tad bit faster so we could get more coins (maybe the shop could be more expensive then, to balance it), but this is a very fun game nonetheless! The tutorial is a good addition, especially because it provides good humor

I like that you can use your coins to improve the next runs as well, it improves replayability by a lot.

itskdog 2022-04-10 00:06

@ConradoClark Thanks for playing. I will probably increase the speed a little. I also might add a bonus if you clear the level of all coins it will repopulate the level with coins. I have a lot more ideas that can be added to this game that I'm currently working on.

lone-wolf 2022-04-10 00:45

This was a lot of fun. I was reluctant to stop playing. Would be nice if there was a save feature, I think I'd come back later.

If you do add the increasing continue cost maybe also tie it to a difficulty setting, I like the more relaxed panic feeling the game currently gives.

Being able to queue cards would be a nice addition, as some cards don't really make sense to delay the activation of when you intend to use them in the level.

Instead of a 3-2-1 counter maybe have an 'interact (via keyboard?) to start instantly' setup; then I don't have to worry about not doing something in time, as I directly choose when the drop starts

It would also be nice if you could play this keyboard-only, I think I would be able to manage my cards much more easily then

That's all that comes to mind at the time of typing this.. Great game!

itskdog 2022-04-10 02:27

@lone-wolf you have some great ideas. I will probably have difficulties and even challenges in the game. Using just a keyboard would be easy to implement. Maybe just pressing space could just start the fall. Thanks for the input.

etchell 2022-04-10 03:44

Cool idea!

I had some runs where no coins appeared at all. I guess thats where you need cards that add them.

I felt like the runs werent long enough. Like perhaps you get dealt a card every x seconds and you want a quantity of 'extend the level' cards in your deck.

I wish I spent more time falling and less time buying cards and planning the 5-15 second run?

rubixnoob13 2022-04-10 05:18

Pretty fun game, although I don't like the little thief gnome guy yelling at me and calling me an idiot when it's inevitable that he's going to die anyway, lol

Great job!

ehon 2022-04-10 10:30

Card games, I feel, are so rare for a jam, so I had to play this one. It was challenging but fun, I like when card mechanics are used with some other gameplay (like falling here, for example). Really cool, with a difficulty of an old retro game. A soild entry!

itskdog 2022-04-10 12:06

@etchell I definitely need to work on the balance of the game. I want the player to make a deck for the way they want to play. Thanks for the great feedback.

@rubixnoob13 Thanks for playing. Making that character was one of the first things I thought of. I think it adds a little personality to the tutorial.

@ehon I wasn't really sure how it would turn out. I want to try to make a deckbuilding game with a twist. I'm glad I was able to make it and that people are having fun.

frank-gevaerts 2022-04-10 17:27

Nice idea! I didn't do too well though, things are a bit quick for me. The art looks good, and the sounds are decent. I'd say this has potential!

itskdog 2022-04-10 18:35

@frank-gevaerts It is a little tricky to play since you kina have to do two things at the same time.

ddrkirbyisq 2022-04-10 19:32

Pretty interesting! Kind of a shame that the moving side to side becomes irrelevant because the power level of the cards is so high (collect all coins on the screen) in comparison. But I guess we all know deck-building games are about achieving broken synergies anyways. That draw 2 / draw 3 bug where you can continually draw cards is game-breaking, but sort of in a good way...that moment when you realize you can continually extend the level, stop your fall, and keep generating more coins, cycling through your entire deck again and again, that I think is when you reach true victory.

the-nacho 2022-04-10 20:13

This game is really addicting. I love some of the "broken combos" you can make with some of the cards, like using the card to multiply the value of coins and then immediately playing the card to collect all the coins on screen. I could definitely see this being expanded into a full game that would be a lot of fun. And it fits the theme really well too!

A couple of suggestions: 1. It would be nice to have some sort of indicator for when the "value multiplication" effect wears off. For other effects it's easier to tell (like when you start falling faster, or don't move side-to-side as much), but I had a hard time figuring out how long the coin value was multiplied for. 1. I think the card drawing animation could be sped up a bit. The "draw more cards" cards weren't nearly as good as I thought they would be, because playing one basically locks you out from playing any cards for a few seconds. It felt like it would always take just long enough to finish drawing the cards right before I hit the bottom of the pit, thus wasting the card.

Overall great work!

timur-bahadir 2022-04-10 20:18

Very interesting and unique idea! :)

itskdog 2022-04-10 21:05

@ddrkirbyisq I'm glad you enjoyed the game. I plan to add obstacles in later levels to where moving side to side might be important.

@the-nacho It is addicting. It's fun trying to collect all the coins. I've already fixed the draw card and they work better. I plan to redo alot of the art and animations.

@timur-bahadir Thanks for playing. It is a very different approach to a deck building game.

phil-c 2022-04-10 23:04

Most unique idea I've seen here so far, and plays really well. At first I was like well this sucks you can barely move and I can't get crap but then I realized the potential of the Restart with deck and removing options... And its gets crazy fun. The dialog volume in the beginning is the only true offender in this game in my eyes.

itskdog 2022-04-10 23:09

@phil-c Thanks so much for playing and enjoying it. If you click the ok while the dialogue goes it speeds it up and the sound stops. I will need to fix the sound volume for it. I wanted the game to start with the user dying right away to kinda fit the theme. It also helps the player to realize that they have to use the cards to help control the falling and enviroment.

noiyy 2022-04-12 10:29

Nice concept  I'd prefer it, if the sideway base speed was a little bit faster, though. Alsoo, I'd increment the cost of starting over with the same deck each time you do press it, as you progress, get a lot of coins but it's still just 5, which is really cheap later on.

elimarable 2022-04-12 12:42

Cool idea! I'm impressed that you got in a whole roguelite deckbuilder within the jam time limit. The art and music do a good job of setting a goofy mood. It's a bit too hard to get started at the moment, maybe it needs to start with a slower fall, faster side to side movement, or a longer initial level. Great work!

itskdog 2022-04-12 17:06

@noiyy Thanks for the feedback. I will be adding a lot more to the progression of the game with different levels and the cost incrementing.

@elimarable Thanks for playing and enjoying the game. I plan to improve the balance of the game with the movement speed and how long the initial stage is.

sakura-magika 2022-04-13 05:48

this is a most unique and fascinating entry! combining realtime movement with card playing / deck building is a really cool idea! i personally don't like using the mouse with the arrow keys at the same time for this game, i think having keyboard bindings for playing the cards would feel a lot better (kind of like using character abilities in action games), like maybe A/D to fall, and GHJKL for cards to keep it all on the home row.

i honestly think trying to align to the theme is really holding your game down. i think its a really bad theme, very uninspiring, encourages making bland unoriginal arcade games. i think the concept/system you came up with would be much more interesting for a platformer, or something with a bit more action.

itskdog 2022-04-13 10:03

@sakura-magika Thank you for the feedback. I plan to develop this game and will be adding key binding for the cards. The arrow keys can also be used for the falling.

mharring 2022-04-14 00:45

Very interesting mechanics! Had me playing a few times to see if I could survive a little longer. I wish the cards didn't block the bottom of the screen because you really couldn't see far ahead as you fell, which meant you couldn't move to catch the coins effectively. The cards were well designed though, nice work!

pkzinpo 2022-04-14 01:16

Very nice concept! I like the amount of replayability that the game has, and it is really interesting how you combined card deck building with realtime movement. I agree with the idea that there could be keybinds for the cards as it gets a little awkward to click and drag cards while you are also trying to focus on the falling. I also think the left and right movement could be faster in general, to me it feels a little sluggish. Overall, a really nice job!

itskdog 2022-04-14 01:40

@mharring Thanks for the feedback. I might try having the cards on the side, but the player might lose focus of them. I do plan to add a little radar to help know what side of the screen coins will be on.

@pkzinpo I also like how the combination of cards were made. Once I had the basic idea, it was really easy to make different cards.

sugarsugarsugar 2022-04-16 00:57

Really cool concept! Might be the only game I've given a 5 for innovation this jam!

itskdog 2022-04-16 01:09

@sugarsugarsugar Thanks for playing and giving the high rating.

psytron 2022-04-18 03:23

Very ambitious jam. Well done!

itskdog 2022-04-18 13:50

@psytron Thanks for playing. The gamr was pretty easy to make since it only had two mechanisms.

bougiebirdie 2022-04-18 17:41

What a neat game!

It took a little while for it to click with me, but after the first run was over and realizing you could continue playing with your same deck really opened up the game for me. It's a pretty simple way to get that rogue-lite mechanic of becoming stronger with each rebirth. Once the game became about making the best deck possible instead of getting the most coins in a run I started to really enjoy it!

Thanks for entering this, I had a lot of fun with it

itskdog 2022-04-18 18:32

@bougiebirdie I'm glad you liked. It is fun building your deck. My favorite card might be greedy.

mmason 2022-04-20 02:38

nice mix of action and deckbuilding, creative gameplay loop

itskdog 2022-04-20 10:57

@mmason Thanks for the feedback. The gameloop is absolutely fun.
