LD50 — Delay the inevitable

JUGGERNAUT by cogcomp 2022-04-06T20:44:05Z

I really like your take on the theme! I definitely hadn't expected to see a game based around "your victory is inevitable" instead of "your defeat is inevitable." The art and the music are great. I do agree with the other commenters saying that the minimum speed is a bit too slow. I was also caught off-guard by the automatic speedups, maybe you could add a different sound or animation to make it clear I'm not being hit by an invisible enemy? Critiques aside, great work on the game!

Climbrr0 by awsumpwner27 2022-04-15T20:53:59Z

Cute game! You're very ambitious to code the engine during the jam period. I enojyed that the sprites were screenshots of the IDE (I'm guessing, they were very stretched). The difficulty ramped up pretty smoothly, with the speed increasing and the platforms getting smaller. The character did feel a bit slippery, like others have mentioned. Well done!

Heat Death by triggthediscovery 2022-04-06T20:27:04Z

Very impressive! It definitely has a steep learning curve. I think something like this could benefit from an integrated gameplay tutorial, though the compendium definitely helped. I did have a lot of problems getting "stuck" in interfaces like the filter picker. The factory components were fun to put together, and the graphics and sounds all felt cohesive. Great job!

Dont Sleep by PhoenixofForce 2022-04-06T20:35:17Z

Very cute and funny! The animations definitely got some laughs out of me. I clicked on the bed wondering if it would be reverse psychology and actually wake me up, but nope, instant game over :) Of course, it would be even better if it had music and sound. Great work!

Pax Nebulae by p-r 2022-04-11T19:53:19Z

Wow, there is an astounding amount of content here for a compo game! I like the idea, and it was fun to explore a little and fight a battle. The music was overpoweringly loud, I had to turn my volume almost off. I think this game could most benefit from an organic sense of progression -- rather than having everything available immediately, start with a small subset of the game mechanics and introduce more as the player demonstrates mastery. With a bit more work, I think this could be something really special! Nice job!

Unsustainable connection by bar0net 2022-04-11T20:01:03Z

Nicely done! I like the mood and theme, the artwork brought it all together nicely. The dodging minigames were fun too. I was confused by some points where everything on the screen suddenly vanished -- I guess it started a new sequence? The transition's a bit abrupt, in that case. Overall, I liked it - it reminds me of something like "Just Shapes and Beats."

Clone Frenzy by eLeDe 2022-04-13T21:04:31Z

Simple but effective! I did feel like the movement was a bit hard to control. Making everything slower, allowing variable-height jumps, and tweaking the jump arc (lower gravity on the way up, higher gravity on the way down) would probably all help make it feel more in control. Nice job!

Cherish the Light by Swen 2022-04-05T12:12:39Z

Nice job, particularly with the artwork and lighting! I'm impressed with how much content you fit into this game. I like that the indicators (like the arrow where you need to make a leap of faith) are only there where you really need them, but I wish they were made into something diegetic.

Mighty Crossroad by hmightypirate 2022-04-13T20:58:04Z

This was a fun game! The sound effects were cute. Sometimes I just didn't get the piece I needed, but I guess I should have planned ahead better. I think some simple animations (like tiles bouncing into place, cars scooting along) would be charming. I got about 2800 points before I got overwhelmed. Great work!

Everlast by LanaLux 2022-04-10T15:18:26Z

You really nailed the humor and mood on this one! The voice acting, the sound effects, the cheerful music juxtaposed against the creepy atmosphere, it all comes together just right. I did find one minor bug: I was able to swing my pickaxe at the empty space where a rock used to be and get another crystal. I'm amazed you managed to get so much content crammed into a compo entry!

Oh No My Trophy by zimny11 2022-04-13T21:14:02Z

Very nice! I like the icons-only tutorial screen, it helps convey the info a lot easier than a wall of text. The gameplay was hectic and fun and reminded me of some of the old Flash games I used to play :) I couldn't figure out what was the secret to the blue guys - sometimes it seemed like I needed to punch them a whole lot, others died much faster. Overall, great job on a very fun entry!

Delay the Invasion by Corporation 2022-04-10T14:59:33Z

Nice! The game feels well-polished in terms of the art, audio, and the overall mood. I wished there was something I could do, like order the troops to move around, while I was waiting to have enough money to buy something. Then again, the other commenters seem to be saying it's best to turtle around the gate, so maybe I'm just thinking about the strategy in the wrong way. This is a cool game!

The Pit by Itskdog 2022-04-12T12:42:15Z

Cool idea! I'm impressed that you got in a whole roguelite deckbuilder within the jam time limit. The art and music do a good job of setting a goofy mood. It's a bit too hard to get started at the moment, maybe it needs to start with a slower fall, faster side to side movement, or a longer initial level. Great work!

Reaplechase by emk4 2022-04-10T14:49:28Z

I like your interpretation of the theme, and the graphics are well done and cohesive. I think the difficulty could use some tweaking. Just by dropping barricades into chokepoints I kept the person alive until 89, at which point he was barely moving at all. Is there a difference between the metal and wood barricades, besides the resource you use to make them? Anyway, overall a nice, fun entry to the jam. Great work!

The Last Stand by Geojax 2022-04-15T21:00:41Z

Nice work, I liked the art and music! The mechanics do a great job of conveying the feeling of "delaying the inevitable," but I agree with the others saying it would be good to have consequences for pushing / not pushing so that there is a reason to delay the inevitable. After the first couple screens I just let the inevitable happen so that I could see everything the game had to offer.

Frantic Alchemist by spadekHemoglobiny 2022-04-05T12:04:16Z

I like this, it's cute! Very slick intro / tutorial, I like how you taught the controls before sending me into the game. I managed to make 74 potions before I failed. The difficulty felt a bit off to me personally, it took a long time to ramp up to longer recipes and it felt odd to go back and forth between long and short recipes. I think what this could really use to sell the mood is some frantic background music. Nice job!

You will be squished. by Alex Garbus 2022-04-21T07:25:59Z

Very simple but refined! I like how the spikes creep down as you survive longer. The controls, art, and sound are all tight and cohesive, though the volume is quite overpowering by default. I played a couple of times and managed to score 8 on my best attempt.

Pain survival by spounka346 2022-04-05T12:19:49Z

This feels like a nice base for a top-down shooter. The movement and shooting feel good already. The pickups do spawn too frequently, making the game a bit too easy. Also, ideally the enemies should appear off-screen rather than "popping in". I would expect the pickups to spawn off-screen too, but if you intended for them to spawn on-screen, then an animation would help explain that. The sounds and music are great!

Drag For Life by zlitch 2022-04-12T12:26:44Z

I like the artwork for the aliens and the music. The intro really needs an option to skip or speed it up. The idea of only being able to pull objects is interesting, but I very quickly trapped myself by accident. I wonder if there's something you could add so people can escape those situations? Nice job on the game!

Drag For Life by zlitch 2022-04-12T19:11:53Z

@zlitch Oh I see, I think the buttons were cut off on my screen because there was part of a button saying "T" in the top left that brought me back to the main menu when I clicked on it. I'm not sure why it got cut off; I was playing the web version on Itch.

Inevitoffice by Lako 2022-04-10T15:34:52Z

I like the mood you put together with the art and the setting. The "red squares are bad" advice was a little confusing, since I thought it meant "avoid workers with red squares" but actually it means "talk to workers with red squares to figure out what's wrong; avoid workers without red squares". You'e definitely conveyed a hostile work environment here. Nice work!

Hold The Line by Griggy 2022-04-10T15:26:25Z

Nicely done! The concept and mechanics feel fun, I really like how you have to angle your troops to intercept attackers. I like the graphics too. Just two notes: it's a little hard to tell the unit types apart when they're in play, and it was difficult to get used to the controls for deployment. I would recommend something like: click to set position, move to set troop angle (compared to original position) and group size (distance from original position). Overall, though, very cool and fun!

Dungeon Crawl by jzucc12 2022-04-06T20:58:39Z

Nice job! It was interesting trying to balance the resources available. I just barely won on easy mode on my second try so the difficulty seems about right :) I think the UI could use a couple of tweaks to reinforce the counter-intuitive parts of the game like "progress is bad" and "running out of time is good," I kind of forgot what I was doing halfway through my first try. Congrats on the submission!

Unpreventable Eruption by The Wind Code 2022-04-21T07:39:59Z

The audio really sets the mood well. The mechanics are pretty interesting, trying to divert and capture the flow. It's a little hard to make plans, though, since the lava movement is so random. It seems like you have to play a few times to get a sense for where the "flows" will appear. Maybe some additional textures will help signpost those very subtle variations in the terrain. Great work!
