Graphics looking good and gameplay is also good. Good Work!
Loved the mechanics! There are a few colliders that may block our way when trying to get to some upper platforms. But in general, its a pretty cool game! Congrats
Nice game ! Dying is a bit punishing when you spent 5 minutes running around to collect everything but that's the way of life I guess ! I also like the art style of the dodo's.
The concept is really great and so are the feedbacks but it's frustrating that the character is so heavy.
Nice graphics. hahaha...
Nice graphics and really fun to play ! Nice job ! However controlls are sometimes stranges... Like if there were inertia or somathing like that...
Really nice game ! A really good use of yoshi mechanics and it just fit the theme ! And what to say, DODO !
Very nice graphics, I also like that when throwing a dodo you switch them. Originally I was about to write that the physics of the dodos jump didn't feel quite right but then I thought about that and I think it captures quite well the jump of the flyless bird :D I have encountered one bug. I was stuck in the middle of the game and was unable to continue (I have fallen there accidentally). This happend to me at least once before during the gameplay but this time I was unable to get out. The mood, graphics, audio are lovely in this!! The mechanics work pretty well and there is something so very satisfying about popping other dodos out of existence. This is a very fun little game.
Wow, thats a great game! Congrats guys, really love the feel and controlls of the dodos. The waves and the music are gave me a very moody experience!
Oh cool someone did it! We considered the Yoshi sacrifice bit while brainstorming the theme. It's awesome to see that someone went with that angle.
The game was pleasant to look at. The music was a good choice--calming and fit the bouncing and fluttering around. The commitment on the jump required an adjustment but it was fine after that. I do think having more mid-air control when doing a stationary jump would have been good but it was never required--perhaps for that reason. The only true problem with the jump was that sometimes the dodo would get hit a ledge and lose all momentum but that's a nitpick for a game jam game.
If this was to become a full release I think that some work would have to be done with the double jump dodo launch. Having to make sure you're fully on the ground when you have a two stack of dodos could be annoying over a full game when you're trying to jump quickly and accidentally trigger a double jump. Maybe double jump having its own dedicated key.
Continuing that thought: the stacking dodos makes me think of a different, more puzzle-like direction that this could go in instead of platforming levels. Each puzzle room/screen would have a set amount of dodos that pop out and you have to manage that stack to perform a task--maybe get to the egg. So if five dodos pop out of the whole you can stack them all and have tasks based around that height. Maybe sacrificing some along the way to get the full stack to fit under a low ceiling, or being able to switch between which dodo that you control and needing to work together--single player co-op with a team of the birds. The flutter ability getting stronger with each dodo could be explored there too. It just dawned on me that it's another Yoshi reference as well, haha.
I appreciated that this was a full level and wasn't over after a minute. It was an actual exploration of the mechanics you made for the jam. Good work.
I like the idea, but the movements really frustrated me, I sadly couldn't finish the game. Maybe slowing down the movement when you release the key if you don't want a full control of the jump while you're in the air. Also, as you made the game in unity, if you want to avoid the dodo being stuck against a wall and not falling down you can add a physic material with everything at 0 on it and apply to the terrain and dodo. If this was intentional, forget what I said!
I'm sure without this movement problem I'd like it though.
@wolar oh no, that's so frustrating! Right in the middle of the level too. Thanks for the report, I'll put it on the list of next fixes.
@thisismyjam fantastic feedback, thanks for taking the time to write all that down! We totally agree with all your points- I'm currently wondering how to such having stacking-puzzle elements while retaining lighter platforming elements. Also very tempted by @favoyang 's co-op suggestion.
A very cute and funny little game. Okay the jump mechanic could have been better, but overall a good game. Well done.
Nice looking and fun game with great audio and a cool premise. Unfortunately the controls felt quite unresponsive and I got stuck when my dodo fell down a hole with a danger sign and then just kept respawning above the pit and falling to it's doom.
I like the great game and cute dodo. i think maybe it would be better for jumping if reducing the value of gravity a little bit. After all, it's still a good game.
Sometimes I felt cheated when my second Dodo was discarded by the game rather than by my jumps, and sometimes the platforming felt a bit 'off', but otherwise, I really enjoyed it! Nice level design, collectables and backtracking. Music is very fitting and theme makes sense. Great job on this one!
a great game but that getting over it feeling god damn
Nice, fun little game. I really enjoyed it!
In my opinion the jump was a bit clunky and annoying at times, but other than that the game was very enjoyable, fluttering and throwing other dodos was very funny :) I only managed to get 2 eggs and like 40... things... I don't know what they are :|
An interesting game with a kind of mechanics.
A nice calm and relaxing game :) If you jump at certain corners, it is sometimes a little bit buggy, but the overall clumsiness of these cute little birds was very well captured. Well done!
YES! haha oh man. Brilliant Job. This little gem had me chuckling throughout. This little platformer has so much polish!
Great little game. The graphics especially shine. I think the game is definitely hampered by poor platforming controls (no doubt could be improved over time), but overall quite a feat.
I appreciated the approach to level design (that you outlined in your post). This mechanic was interesting as well but as previously mentioned, the platforming physics really need some iteration. As is moving around the level was too frustrating for me to feel motivated to search for collectibles, which is a shame because obviously there were alternate paths and nooks and crannies to find them in which would have been a neat exploration challenge. Even when I did find collectible items they proved difficult to collect -- for example missing the collectibles while jumping down a long chasm, which meant having to backtrack to attempt that jump again. As mentioned by another user it was also easy to accidentally doublejump off of a Dodo without meaning to.
If you are using some sort of stock physics engine for your platformer movement I would highly recommend trying to implement your own movement instead as 2d platformers just tend to not conform to normal rigidbody physics well. I did this for our team's LD43 game to great effect and was able to end up with a very tight and responsive movement system [/end shameless plug]
Hopefully jumping around and walking should feel less awkward than actual Dodo birds =P
As exotic as Yoshi. In the steps of the 2D Mario. A very good and neat platformer, with a true narrative structure. It's really a good entry.
"Hey, you know that thing from *Super Mario World* where you can throw Yoshi into a pit to get another jump? You know how that's such a horrible thing to do to poor Yoshi? Let's make an entire game based around that!" Genius. Definitely one of the more amusing ideas I've seen this Ludum Dare. The whole things ends up as a very fluffy black comedy: the use of dodos as the characters, the "honk" noise as you jump, the feathery explosion when you jump on another dodo...
I didn't mind the collectathon gameplay, but I feel like the jumping physics are kinda off. Sometimes I jumped too far, sometimes I didn't jump far enough. Sometimes I'd double-jump and gain barely any height at all. I tried one jump about fifteen times, and then gave up and stopped playing. Getting the jumping physics right is pretty important for a platform game.
This is a good game, don't get me wrong. It's just a shame that it's let down by the wonky physics, otherwise it'd be great.
Dodos will become extincted again due to me, I love the mechanics and the level, how big it is, the different quick puzzles and how you work with 2 dodos. This is a great game 😃
