This game is beautiful! Wow the art is amazing. Amazing game. As for feedback, the controls are a bit difficult; I can never find control in time to attack those jumpers, and the game itself is surprisingly hard. I never can seem to make it very far. It doesn't seem to matter if I avoid or fight the enemies, as I always seem to die very early. Anyway, super cool game!

majamiltu 2017-07-31 20:48

Very pretty game! The art is amazing. Really enjoyed it :)

boltkey 2017-07-31 21:26

A really nice game, good interpretation of the theme and decent execution. It was maybe a bit too difficult at times... aaand I just realized I could have attacked, that was not really clear. But I finished the game anyway. I got the virtual pacifist achievement at least lol.

everythingwasbees 2017-07-31 22:08

Incredibly pretty, as mentioned previously. The robot corpses being left behind is also a very nice touch! However, even for a challenging game, it's a bit unforgiving. No matter how I approached it, I rarely ever got very far. The character physics also seemed a bit weightless. Still, good use of the theme, gorgeous, and something I'd like to revisit if you guys come back to it.

boxfort 2017-07-31 22:37

I really love the concept of this game, using each robot to power the next area, and the gradual progression. Really pretty graphics, good job!

rafael-souza 2017-07-31 23:10

The game mechanics is fantastic.

See the old robots too, is awesome :)

Love it, launch this game!

bombjack 2017-07-31 23:39

one of my current favorite.

jeremy-ryan 2017-08-01 01:57

Awesome game. The overall idea is awesome and fits the theme really well. I appreciate how your powerless corpses serve as a monument to your failure.

It's interesting because you play the same level over and over but you progress each time. It's neat.

Also how on earth did you manage to make all of those graphics in 48 hours? It looks beautiful.

EDIT: noticed Jam, not Compo. Still impressive!

solah 2017-08-01 09:16

Nice graphics and good gameplay. I love the idea of having each robot doing a part of the job. Well done!

mvdvelden 2017-08-01 09:38

Great use of the theme! I love the art styl, animations, and gameplay mechanic where you keep respawning as a new robot and use your previous attempts to progress. Great job!

rela-x 2017-08-01 10:27

Thanks for all the comments!

ryzy27 2017-08-01 10:51

Nice game. The best use of theme I've seen so far. I liked enemies behaviour.

Only minor 'bug' I've encountered was when you jump down from platform robot corpses fall with you. Seems like you left physics on corpses, you could disable it after corpse falls to ground after death.

Sprites look very nice, I wish there was some music to make the mood stronger. Good job guys!

uzyfeo 2017-08-01 10:52

Windows site says it doesn't exists...

Anyway, I played the WebGL version and I must say I like your theme implementation.

Running down on power doesn't mean end but new beginning + you kind of have to die, and you seeing your power-less bodies scattered throughout the level was very nice touch too.

Graphics are nice, gameplay wise wasn't half bad and I surely had fun with this one!

I need yet to finish it though, but I'll definitely return to this one :)

a333 2017-08-01 14:47

Great pixel art! I like your approach to the theme. Nice touch with the oil particles, too.

I'd probably balance enemies to be a bit more easier, but add some kind of penalty to death. Even a simple thing like enemy health regeneration would help preventing the grind fest - run, make one punch, die, repeat - but with your current enemy AIs that would be too hard. But that's good - there's always potential for improvement.

senfer 2017-08-01 15:06

Thanks a lot for all the feedback, it is greatly appreciated!

franfox 2017-08-01 17:10

Love the pixels and the idea of going left another instances of the robots and the persistance of the map. Good work!

sgt3v 2017-08-01 17:27

Very good pixel art and good concept! The difficulty should be dropped a bit in my opinion, it gets a bit boring to go all the same way just to kill another robot.

rocketship 2017-08-01 17:39

Jeez I love the level design, it's so smart. The fact that everything you do drains energy and you have freedom to decide if you fight or try to avoid all conflict. I like the death mechanic, but enemies felt really really difficult, maybe would have toned them down a little bit. Graphics are also really nice and clean.

Was a pleasure to play this!

skippuku 2017-08-01 17:51

Really nice pixel art. Could have used some sound though, and I'll have to agree that is was too difficult. i like how everything stayed how it was when you respawn.

pixelproductions 2017-08-01 17:53

NIce job ! I liked the idea about restarting the game, when you control another robot. And the way the screens fade to another robot, is awesome. Nice graphics, too. But I think is would be better if you add some sounds effects.

herniewise 2017-08-01 18:14

This one rocks art-wise. I suck at playing but I hate non challenging games xD

ramou 2017-08-01 18:21

but... it's hard ! :scream:

peredom 2017-08-01 18:28

The art is amazing and the idea is very original. But it was a bit frustrating and boring to go through all those platforms and waste almost all your energy just to hit an enemy twice and then die and do the same. If the spawner was closest to the action it would be better. Maybe some checkpoints would've been great. Other than that, everything is awesome, especially the music ;). Really, I really liked it a lot once I opened the first gate.

rela-x 2017-08-01 18:29

@ramou sorry about that, but if you won't git gud it will just take you a little bit more time to finish the level (ofc balance isn't in it's final form though)

resat-inci 2017-08-01 19:11

Really cool consept.

resat-inci 2017-08-01 19:11

Really cool consept.

donvermo 2017-08-01 19:46

Really nice concept for the game and I really like how you applied the theme. I didn't find the game to be too hard but as you were getting a bit further down in the level it did become a bit tedious to lose 3/4 of my energy just walking there, it might have been better to just have a very small constant drain instead for those actions. Extra points for the pixel art btw which is great.

If you have some time please play and rate my game which I made in a little under 24 hours: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/the-sorcerers-apprentice

ohmaigawd 2017-08-01 21:52

At first I didnt realize that the game doesnt restart when your robot dies, so I thought this game was impossible to beat. But once I figured it out I really liked it! A really nice implementation of the theme and very nice graphics (seriously, how can you make so much good art in such a short time? :D) Well done!

andrewbwm 2017-08-01 21:57

Wow, colour me impressed! I was actually sad to see it end when it did, that's a great sign. Great work, guys!

togis 2017-08-02 05:58

I uploaded my gameplay of this game on youtube, you can find it here

Thanks for being part of the stream :)

landberglife 2017-08-02 12:57

Great game, loved the graphics and the slow progression, my corpes helps me see how much further i got each time! Great idea and it fit the theme really well. One note though, sometimes I did not know which door i opened when i plugged in the power, maybe adding a short cutscene to show me where the open door was? I also think abit of audio would have gone a long way!

brandon-diaz 2017-08-02 15:39

I'm pretty bad at it, but but I really dig the aesthetic and the corpse mechanic, very cool.

elit3dgaming 2017-08-03 08:26

loved every bit of this game. The progression mechanic is really interesting

hishicorne 2017-08-03 09:05

A - w - e - s - o - m - e game ! It's a very good game, fun to beat ! The graphics are fantastics - as good as a finished game. Maybe it would be better - as Togis said - to see wich door is opened when we charge something. Also musics would have been great - but it's not bad not to have musics -.

It's one of the best game i've played for this ludum dare !

zee 2017-08-03 09:56

I really like the core concept of the game! Having to conserve energy, and sacrificing yourself to open doors for your future self is a cool mechanic, and I can see it being used for interesting puzzles. Great job on the sprite work, for 72 hours, the animation and detail is quite impressive, and are the reason why I clicked on the game!

As much a I like the mechanic, I feel it wasn't used to its potential. For one, the purple door screams "I'll open later so you can conserve energy to get further." Instead, the door was just there to block a switch. The lack of puzzles seems odd. I was sure the doors would open shortcuts!

That being said, having to clear enemies out to conserve energy for future trips did work very well, giving a sense of progress when you get just a little bit further! For the first half of the game, slowly conserving energy and killing each monster, and getting a feel for the game, was pretty fun!

However, another problem was the level layout. Once you hit the purple switch, you can sort of just run past everything. Causing you to hit the three remaining switches without really worrying about energy or the enemies. The boss was also odd, the first time I played, I had to hope he wasn't at the right platform and run for the switch, since I had so little energy. It wasn't until the second play-through I realized I could hit him from above, which is odd, since the punch misses visually.

Overall, the mechanic was a great idea, and has great promise! I can already imagine puzzles such as destroy your old corpses to close a platform to walk across it, or even killing out early to save some energy for a later robot! I really hope you take the feedback from the jam, and continue to work on it. I can see it becoming something special!

sporeczek 2017-08-03 11:47

the game is not bad. Very nice graphic in my opinion. The lack of sound is a little bit frustrating. But it not so bad :)

damoy 2017-08-03 14:17

Pretty nice and well-looking game ! Congrats for the work :)

goloso-games 2017-08-03 18:21

Art is amazing. Awesome work. Game mechanics are pretty cool, even if sometimes you know you are going to die because you can't hit your enemy more than twice (or maybe I am too bad at this). Anyway, this is for me one of the best game of LD39, congrats !

mianagames 2017-08-03 22:16

Great game, great pixel art. I really like it. Congratulations!

coomzy 2017-08-03 22:35

I really like the persistent death of the old robots and how even tho it's a sort of death it still helps you out. I think a little sound would have gone a long way, the graphics were really good but just no sound at all let down the whole 'feel'.

kapricorn-media 2017-08-03 23:03

Great mechanic, solid pixel art. Makes you think of what you´re doing after dying 30 times

michaeltwg 2017-08-04 06:40

Well Done, impressive gameplay for 72 hours game and de dark soul like level design work well except for the first door interrupter that happen to late for the player to fully understand what to do. After the this the game is really easy. Great job: thumbsup:

jusw85 2017-08-06 02:04

A short and sweet game, not too hard, with a unique corpse mechanic, I liked it! If there's anything I can add, it's that I think the corpses could've been cleared between each run, or otherwise incorporated into a gameplay mechanic. As it stands right now, the corpses don't do much except decorate the background, and I can forsee if the game is expanded, the level might be cluttered with corpses that don't add anything to gameplay and make it hard to see anything.
