The downloads are missing a data folder, so I can't actually play the game!

shabap 2017-08-01 18:58

Thanks @shinmera it was my first time building a game for PC so I didn't know that. I think I fixed it now.

I like the cheetah model :) The running/power mechanic was really interesting, and I liked the day/night cycle effect. It was fun taking down a gazelle :D Great job!

xero560 2017-08-01 20:53

Congratulations on finishing your first jam! This is a pleasant game. I think it is impressive you managed to rig and animate an animal model in a weekend, especially if it isn't your forte, and also put the rest of the game together. I think your environment is nice. The transition between desert and oasis is very good. It has a pleasant feeling. The gameplay is there, but seems a bit buggy. The food counter did not go up when I ate the gazelle, but I did not die when it reached 0? The cheetah feels actually pretty fun, I really like the feeling of the drift. I feel like it would be more fun if there were less gazelle and the chase was a bit trickier and lasted longer? I hope you feel much more confidant in your skills after this project.

How do you eat? I was on the gazelle pressing space, it had the eating animation but the total food stayed at zero :/ Otherwise it a good concept, very related to the theme !

I really loved those wildlife simulation games in the 90s. This brought me right back!

Likes: - nice graphics, useful animations - the herd chase in day 2 is AWESOME! what a rush! - day night cycle - beautiful, moody color palette - game is STUNNING on 3440x1440 ultrawide. So much savannah!

Try differently: - no sound? (didn't seem to work for me) - unity standard dialog when I launched the game, suggesting 1024 resolution. Let it default to 1920x1080 or 1280x720 windowed if you want to be safer. - splash screen with instructions is easy to skip and easier to forget :) Guess who didn't know what to do after catching the first Antelope, haha!

Overall: - nice short wildlife sim - really awesome moment chasing that huge herd of ... impala? - cheetah protagonist sure likes his leopard print leggins

The best game I have played so far! And I love that you chose to use full 3D--so few people do in LD, and the games that do it well really shine. Plus, the graphics are superb! (And amazing job for a first game!!!!)

aircraft-terrier 2017-08-01 21:03

Cool little game I love the core hunting mechanics of stealthing close, then sprinting to catch, well done! I think I struggled most with getting feedback from the game. After I killed my first gazelle, I couldn't tell if I was eating or not, there was an animation, but I didn't see my food stores go up. It was a lovely looking savanna to spend a little time sprinting around in though, so thanks for making and sharing this!

gengi 2017-08-01 21:35

Ahh, I wanted to hunt at night! Oh well. Found a couple of bugs. Was running full speed and jumped. I stayed in a flying state till I slowed to a stop, and then couldn't do anything. The other bug I managed to kill a gazelle, couldn't figure out how to eat. So just went for a run. When I jumped I instantly teleported back to the dead food. Took a rest and tried to eat it the next day. I lost 2% food. lol. I had fun thou. Great open scenery, great interpretation of the theme.

ijona 2017-08-01 21:47

For me, it was too hard too eat anything, but just running very fast was fun :) And the cheetah is cute! It seemed no a predator, but a poor cute kitten. Well, it's what it really was in my noob hands :D

anudin 2017-08-01 22:29

The hitboxes are too big and if you scare them they'll not relax after time. But besides that I liked the game alot. The gameplay is actually really fun and movement feels great. One strange thing is that the animals will actually sometimes flee towards you. The only thing that wasn't obvious about the gameplay was how to eat. I knew I needed to but I couldn't figure out how. Because it's essential you could maybe add a little overlay which says something along the lines of "Space" or "Press space to eat" etc.. Great job with the entry - I had fun with it :)

shabap 2017-08-02 02:14

Thanks a lot guys. I'm really sorry for those who tried to eat and died because they coudn't. As many of you said there is a bug that makes eating impossible. I fixed it many times but there seems to be a problem with instantiated objects and triggers in Unity. @xero560 thanks for your review I haven't rigged the cheetah just modified an existing tiger model textured it crudely and animated it. I haven't animated the gazelle I was lucky to find a model with preexisting animations by luck. The number of gazelle decreases each day but I made the first days plentiful because they are hard to see and trees can be mistaken for them which would be less fun. @thygrrr thanks for your in depth review. I'm sorry I knew nothing about Unity audio and didn't have time to learn about it in the jam. @artur-hawkwing I'm really happy that you said it was the best you played. The game is not really 3d as the cheetah can't go up slopes or move up and down other than jumping because the default unity character controller is more suited for humanoid characters and writing a character controller would be a lot of work. @anudin initially when you jumped I placed an trigger in the paws of the cheetah and it would only catched the prey when it touched it. However it was extremely hard with the speed cheetah was moving and the random movements of the gazelle. So I made the hitbox pretty big to ensure that everyone was able to catch a gazelle in a short playthrough. I tried to make the gazelle move zigzaggingly as seen in the documentaries but it turned out to be fleeing towards the cheetah.

nekonemo 2017-08-02 20:29

A really good game. I am impressed by the rig and the animation of the cheetah that is really nice. I can report two bugs. First, even when I can catch a gazelle, my food counter doesn't increase and then, sometimes when I catch a gazelle I can see the animation of the cheetah but the gazelle disappears. However it is a really good game and just running every where is a lot of fun. Good job :)

nintendoeats 2017-08-02 22:00

Good on you for trying something this graphically impressive (even if you didn't do the models yourself). I see the potential in the feel and mechanics, but it seems like you bit off more than you could chew (hah!). At least it was more fun than Shelter, but that is also true of having a brick thrown through your window. I would be interested to see this after a week of development.

If you do carry it further, I would start by working on the character movement, particularly slowing down and trying to turn around. That is really what will make or break the immersion and fun.

atomicdad 2017-08-03 01:27

Great work. Impressive that you did all of that work by yourself. I'm not very knowledgeable with 3D game dev, so it's much more than I could have achieved. The only complaint I have is not being able to back up. Haha. Keep at it!

mmm 2017-08-03 02:04

Overall good, but there are a lot of bugs, sometimes cheetah froze in air when i jump(not lag, the grass is still moving), also you can move when the cheetah is sleeping

stephen-meyer 2017-08-03 02:04

Great first jam entry! For either realism or comedic effect, the game could use more gore. I blood particle effect would be fun to make and not too difficult.

don-fouts 2017-08-03 02:12

Cool idea for the theme. The animations were a little rough and it's hard to get into without any sound. If you continue working on this try to get the feet moving at the same speed as the ground so the character doesn't look like they're running on ice!

lightzer 2017-08-03 02:29

I really enjoyed this! The blood rush of pouncing on an innocent gazelle was exhilarating. Seriously though, good job. Couldn't close the game after I died though.

dolash 2017-08-03 04:42

That was pretty neat. I have to give props for the effort that went into building the game, the mechanics, filling it with pretty decent and well-implemented animals and nature. The actual controls and hunting were a little floaty though, tough to reliably control yourself and actually make contact. Could use more polishing and testing, maybe some ambient sounds to set the mood, perhaps sick instant-replay kill-cams with John Madden inspired play-by-play commentary on your every Cinematic Takedown(tm), but a very good effort nonetheless.

assoonasimpossible 2017-08-03 18:58

Very nice execution when it comes to creating the environment and animals. Some audio definitely would be appreciated. Overall solid experience.

lamm 2017-08-03 20:30

great game, you did a good job

sythgara 2017-08-03 20:45

You did quite well with the amount of graphics and mechanics. It's fun playing around with it, but I found the controls hard to operate. (Not slowing down or attacking)

duskpn 2017-08-03 20:45

Good job! I really like the interpretation of the theme and I'd love to see this further developed!

xqwzts251 2017-08-03 20:51

Fine idea, like it a lot - chasing was difficult, and yeah the second level rocks :D. I like the cheetah model, and all the graphics. Main issues: animation could be nicer, there was a problem with physics (I was running onto gazelle, hit key and I teleport with this gazelle, or everyhing was made in 1 frame). Also it's hard to make that type of game, because it's heavy rely on physics.

But will be nice if you improve that, add some audio, levels?, and menu :D.

wdebowicz 2017-08-04 19:45

I love such type of innovation. I took part in many LD editions, but never seen such game. Good job!

kr4ft3r 2017-08-05 23:06

Nice, in general I like whenever someone tries to make a nature/animal simulator. Though animation and model is obviously lacking in realism (but gj on putting the model and animation by yourself), I like the feel of movement and the way cheetah has inertia and doesn't just stop when in sprint mode.

peachtreeoath 2017-08-08 04:40

From what little I know of actual gazelle behavior it actually felt awesome to sprint at a pack and take one down. You made a good decision to make the hitbox large because when I went for a solo one I missed like 4 times and thought it was gonna be a rough time, but I ended up having an easier time once I found packs. I honestly loved the colors you used in the game. The bright orange saturation made it feel like a lively savannah, you did an awesome job on the setting. Not gonna lie I didn't expect much after seeing the title screen but it was way better than I expected.
