LD39 — Running out of Power

Soporific: A Bedtime Story by paracatgames 2017-08-02T05:22:33Z

Hey @kapricorn-media. I've seen a couple hundred jam games over the years and Saito's Transgression is the prettiest one I've ever laid eyes on. You complimenting the artwork means a lot. Thanks for the feedback!

Congratulations on making an intense blast of cool nostalgia. I was grinning and bobbing my head from the moment the game started till the end. Loved it. Also, thanks for including a WebGL build.

Last Bot Standing: Game of the Year Edition by Shaolin Dave 2017-08-03T01:00:43Z

Good job on this. A lot of the jam games that involve driving have really loose controls. These are some tight controls and a good level layout. It was a genuinely enjoyable few minutes of play.

Beautiful. I'm surprised that art style isn't more of a trend.

For my taste the game play could have stood one more small level of complexity. For example, the player needing to navigate down a path with WASD to a destination while shining the light with arrows and recharging with R.

I hope you all keep making pretty games like this for future jams.

Saito's Transgression by Kapricorn Media 2017-08-02T04:54:42Z

Absolutely beautiful! Most jam games you can't tell who's a pro and who's an amateur. Anyone who can pump out striking art like that (especially so quickly) should absolutely be doing this professionally. I had the same problem as others where I wasn't sure what to do at the very end, but I thought how the ability to transition into birds in the first place was hinted at well and very intuitive.

Space Bear Panic by Chris Coe 2017-08-03T01:45:06Z

I had the same problem as @shamuel described while loading in MS Edge, but it worked fine in Chrome.

The noise when you add power to the shuttle is so shrill that it hurts, but you nail the old school vibe. This is a great entry.

Neopolitan Panic! by Phillip 2017-08-02T05:52:34Z

Slick game. Even the menu looked pretty slick.

Playing Crazy Taxi as a kid, I remember the complete lack of consequences for running innocent people over to be weird and it took me out of the game. Running over low poly penguins, on the other hand, is just plain funny. Good luck!

Cheetah Power by shabap 2017-08-03T02:04:15Z

Great first jam entry! For either realism or comedic effect, the game could use more gore. I blood particle effect would be fun to make and not too difficult.

Be The President by MrSerp 2017-08-02T17:35:07Z

I didn't expect this game to bring up such interesting game design ideas. The Amnesia Fortnight game, Dear Leader, had an almost identical visual layout, gameplay, and objective. I thought the only substantive change, switching out an unnamed dictator for Trump, would maybe make it a little funnier and less compelling, but it actually changed things in a more interesting way. I found myself not just acting the way I would in real life or trying to meet some in-game numerical goal, but instead actually trying to respond as Trump would. After a while within this silly little jam game, I was actually coming close to inhabiting a character that I despise in real life. Trump may be a bridge too far in terms of getting intelligent people to empathize with someone they disagree with, but it reminded me that it's a powerful ability games have (for example, people who go through police training simulations come out having greater respect and empathy for how tough that job is).

If you ever complete the phone and Twooter app features, I recommend using Yarn Spinner to script out any dialog exchanges. Night in the Woods was made with it, and I tried it out for the first time on this jam (not so subtle plug for people to try out our game). Yarn Spinner was easy to learn and accomplished everything we wanted it to.

The Visible City by Colestia 2017-08-03T20:22:15Z

I was just going to say how much it reminded me of Atom Zombie Smasher, but the last comment beat me to it. Since it isn't my favorite style of gameplay, the thing that sold me on AZS and your game was the great atmosphere and mood. Choosing a time period and place that people will already have some familiarity with and then tying together beautiful music and images to evoke it is a brilliant strategy for a game jam (rather than building a world from scratch). Impressive work.
