LD39 — Running out of Power

The Last Wisp by Mordokay 2017-08-03T00:46:21Z

Let myself lose at around 460 seconds strictly using the right click. Didn't find items to be very useful because of the energy cost and low duration. It's not a bad game. You've got a solid mechanic that works and presents the player with a bit of challenge. But it's a single state of difficulty regardless of how long you play. The game didn't present me with any obstacles that would require me to use left click or items. In other words, they didn't add anything to my overall experience.

So there are some game aspects that could be further developed. The particle system was great, you fit the theme, music and sounds were fitting. And I didn't find any game breaking bugs other then being able to right click enemies on the other side of rocks. In the end, a solid effort for a 2man team.

Nearly shut it off with the twit trump joke. Sour music notes to avoid copyrights, not fun to listen to. This thing you imagine as a sense of humor is just bad parody. I did think it neat that you created a twitter feed. Didn't find any use for the map. Didn't enjoy catching pokemon. Didn't see any power loss. I imagine it's left as a gag to shut off the power once you near the end. Nothing really going for it in the way of a game.

Saw this and instantly thought WarThunder! I had questions about what this had to do with power right from the start. Trying to fly with WASD was a bad idea, I spent my first 5 minutes just trying to figure out the odd keys that were bound so I could get into playing. Once I learned arrows worked I started to enjoy myself. I got into a furball and noticed I was the only plane flying like a normal plane. The enemy seemed to resemble some type of fish with their wiggling. And then it happened, The audience began to applaud!?! I don't think a game of this type really needs music. But it wasn't bad, up until I heard the clapping that is. All immersion was broken at that point. It's not a bad game beyond these nitpicks. Controls well. Looks and sounds good. But the theme didn't really fit for me. A plane running out of fuel is perfectly normal. Clever interpretation for sure. But fuel isn't necessarily power. All that aside, great job as a solo game!

I had a hard time understanding the voice. The jump didn't seem useful in the least. Falling between two platforms through what I assumed to be a wall was trolly. But I was able to fly around by throwing the ball and teleporting, so falling to my death was a defeated mechanic. It felt like I was in a real life 2D world where being underneath a platform was an effective wall stretching into infinity. I think I would have enjoyed exploring more with double the jump height, and if platforms were one way, preventing me from falling, but not limiting me from passing through them from below. There wasn't much in the way of an obstacle preventing me from completing the game. Negatives aside, it's solid. The non-stressful exploration didn't require any music. Sounds were good, floating between clouds was nice. I'd love to see future Jams adding further depth and twists to this great start to an adventure.

It's solid gameplay, but the only risk of death is selecting too strong of an enemy to tangle with, and ending up with too little health to run and find something more your size. Would have liked some sort of game over screen with stats to brag about. Great job as a solo project, and nice title pic!

@aurynsky-games There are check points every 200 distance that restores your energy and health. It's a struggle to get there on a first play. But you'll pick up the rhythm for it in no time.

@sno0w Actually you can focus fire on a target by clicking on it. We also had ideas for more energy management devices. But being unsure of the fun/game balance factors, we opted to keep it simple. There is however an enemy that'll boost the challenge factor if you manage to live long enough.

Manual Mech by Mikeliosus 2017-08-17T01:48:56Z

Looking at your pic I realize what went wrong in my attempt. You see, I was able to move and play the game with the dialog still on screen. Actually, the "What is going on" dialog was too far below my screen. I didn't see that text at my resolution. So naturally I thought you just had a huge GUI along the bottom of the screen that covered up stuff like the drill. It took way too long to figure out how to manage the drills power considering I couldn't see the slider. The obvious fix would be to force the player to complete the dialog, and put it in a place where it could be seen at odd resolutions.

I didn't understand why there is a perfectly vertical jump. I didn't find any use for it, so why would that be my default jump angle? Furthermore, I didn't like that I slid along the ground after landing. It takes away from the feeling of being a large mech.

That said, it's a good concept. I like the idea of unnatural controls that you learn to get good at. A skillful play would be satisfying to do.

I like these kind of logic games! But was a bit disappoint when I learned the 'power' was just an awful fast timer that took away my fun. I'm not sure how I could suggest a better design. But I did notice on the board you had some type of circuit which could have been an interesting addition.

I'm guessing you're having a good sleep after the event. Looking forward to playing when you upload the files to play.

Blackout by Kichex 2017-08-01T05:00:07Z

Graphics issues playing at an unplanned resolution aside, I was spinning in space, lol. thought myself lost forever. Then I learned how to fly. The switch from ASWD to Tank controls was a hurdle. Beeps were beeping. Alarms were alarming. There was a bit of tension when I saw my health going down. But I managed to do enough to survive. I had fun. But of all the things I was running out of, none of them were power.

Number Station by maxr00 2017-08-01T04:47:28Z

Got stuck on 'evens'. Tried a few things but didn't work. Having the screen shift while trying to turn the dial was a negative point. More so then the lil bit of guitar that looped in the background. It was fine at the start, but when I got stuck it became too repetitive and pushed me away from sticking around to try more. It wasn't clear to me when I did something right. Regardless, Loved all the visual detail, nice to play what feels to be a finished game. Amaz job for a compo!

Cheetah Power by shabap 2017-08-01T21:35:31Z

Ahh, I wanted to hunt at night! Oh well. Found a couple of bugs. Was running full speed and jumped. I stayed in a flying state till I slowed to a stop, and then couldn't do anything. The other bug I managed to kill a gazelle, couldn't figure out how to eat. So just went for a run. When I jumped I instantly teleported back to the dead food. Took a rest and tried to eat it the next day. I lost 2% food. lol. I had fun thou. Great open scenery, great interpretation of the theme.

Shadow Crawl by Connor Hagan 2017-08-01T05:19:13Z

Finished the two doors and then there's more!?!? Yo, dude! good job getting all the mechanics in there and then building a decent little game with it. It was more then just a gimmick. This is a game!

Coffee is Power by Tyler Miller 2017-08-17T02:07:10Z

I played at an odd resolution, the Checklist was over the corner of the room and blocked gameplay. The text 'progress' was also over the game area and I wondered why you didn't have some type of contrasting border around your text so I could read it clearly. But that's okay, I see that you intended to have those UI elements outside of the playable area. So I won't take off points given its a jam.

Besides those things, I managed to complete the checklist, but didn't know what to do afterwards. So I played games till I exhausted the timer. I didn't know I was supposed to program a game! lol. I would have included that in your checklist, instead of having to explain it in the game controls.

The music was nice, but didn't really fit the mood. And it continued to play during my game over screen, which leads me to believe that it was just tacked on.

That said, the game looks great, plays quite well. I didn't like that I couldn't walk between the game console and that table. But everything is executed well, and was an interesting take on the theme. +1 that you did it all solo.

Industria by rb2750 2017-08-01T03:43:56Z

I'm curious if the system you played it on was running a bit slow, The power ran out too fast! I lost at least 5 times before I figured out what to do, even with having read the instructions. I eventually got my energy bar to increase and my village grew too big to support their energy use... So Dark! That is the theme after all. Ah yea! clicking on the right side of the screen usually created a power plant immediately. Probably an issue with the button state only looking for mouse down, rather then click.

Qwik by Sno0w 2017-08-01T04:03:15Z

Great flow with the music and the sounds! I enjoyed stage 1. I found the loss of falling off an edge was less of a blow then using the jump. I was able to fall off an edge, respawn, and fill my energy to about 75% of the screen, which appears to be max? Was able to play till time ran out. Jump felt too scripted in stage 2, too perfect of a height. I would have enjoyed a variation of gaps that required some skill to complete. Great to see all that you managed to complete as a solo dev!
