Hey, congrats on your first jam game!

Really cool, that you have made all the assets. Maybe game was a bit short, but it is a game nevertheless :)

devparty 2021-04-26 23:23

This game has pretty nice GFX.

guardaro 2021-04-26 23:25

Super cute! I love the music. Definitely a bit short, but that's how game jams go!

simul 2021-04-26 23:27

Congratulations on creating your game!! :D! I think it's definitely a nice start, yeah! The game seems to end rather quickly, but it's an accomplishment alone to get all of this done.

britt-henderson 2021-04-26 23:29

Great job on the game :) The concept is very endearing. I like the nice intro and outro the game has and the music is great too! I think to take this game to the next level, there are two or three low hanging fruits you could add in: 1. A slightly longer game play loop (right now, it felt a tad jarring it was over in just one or two turns) 2. Right now, the game is simply two coin-flips and you win or lose. The mechanic for moving around the map is there- it has the opportunity to be developed more. What if there were things that made choosing between the left or the right more challenging and engaging? For example, a key you have to get to open a gate, or a pit that you can't fall into. These things would increase the engagement a lot 3. Juice! Giving moving some partical effects, or adding sounds for walking, or screenshake if you choose the wrong one. Something to enhance player feedback a little more for doing something - this goes a really long way for game development.

Really nice job :)

dk5000p 2021-04-26 23:33

I like the use of sound as a game mechanic it is rarely seen. Would have been more interesting if maybe there was something we were looking for to keep the wolf from eating us to use the sound mechanic more, but I understand that is tough to even complete something during a game jam. Congratulations.

mizatorian 2021-04-26 23:53

Thanks for all the comments. Did not expect to get so many so fast. I uploaded a bit early just to make sure i dont get stuck with upload problems. I have uploaded a slightly longer game now

@britt-henderson Thanks for your feedback. Those were all things I wanted to do, but ran out of time. We had already designed the key assets and the flower was supposed to be interactable, but alas, not enough time.

mizatorian 2021-04-27 01:45

Thanks @Kszaku @DevParty @Guardaro @Simul @dk5000p for the feedback and suggestions. 1) My second game with Godot and I was a bit more ambitious. However my knowledge of the engine really let me down. I had to google a lot of things and mish-mash stuff together to work 2) The debugging was a nightmare. Not knowing why things weren't working was bad, plus I had weird glitches that I couldn't explain. 3) Sound as a game mechanic was suggested by my designer, The fallback was to show a correct/incorrect equation, which would have been a bit more lame 4) Game is super short due to all the debugging headaches, Originally intended for 5 levels, with keys to unlock the gate and flowers to collect for grandma.

cheesepencil 2021-04-27 05:03

Haha I don't know what I'd do without wolfram tunes, they saved my bacon last few jams.

I love the art in this one. That wolf is terrifying. Great jam, I hope you guys had as much fun making it as I did playing it.

tetrapteryx 2021-04-27 16:43

Listening for sound cues to find the right path is an interesting concept! I'd be interested to see where you would take this with more time and comfort with the engine

andrewkennedy 2021-04-27 21:50

Hm, it seems like there were supposed to be audio cues, but I couldn't hear anything when I got near the gates. I just walked through and randomly died. I eventually just did trial and error until I beat it.

mizatorian 2021-04-27 22:34

@cheesypencil yep. Wolfram for the win!, we definitely had fun and sleepless nights making it @tetrapteryx Yeah, I will probably update this to include more stuff, suggestions from fellow LDers and my own wishlist

@andrewkennedy Oh, I'm not sure what happened there. Its supposed to slow down when you get near a gate and then play the sound. I find the sound in the Web version to be a bit choppy. The exe works better.

hcs-hades 2021-04-28 01:51

Simple but its a cool idea for sure!

jonathan-turner 2021-04-28 14:08

Thanks for participating in the jam!

Best part of the game was when I heard the sound effects and went "That is that person's voice!" Hah.

Once you figure out you needed to wait at the gate to hear the sound effect the game became trivial, maybe think of some way to add some more difficulty.

Nice work!

pat-cleaver 2021-04-28 17:48

nice, love making sound a central mechanic! Could have used a couple more sounds in there to trick the player, right now it's just a matter of "do I hear the humming or the growling?", but a version with a humming wolf could be nice. Overall I like the idea, and it looks pretty too.

eryn 2021-04-28 17:49

Nice sound effects, wish it was a bit longer!

boxedmeatrevolution 2021-04-28 17:51

Why am I laughing so hard?! The SFX are too good.

thegamer1123211 2021-04-28 17:53

Congrats on your first game! Really well done overall, keep going!

samazki 2021-04-28 17:57

Wish it was longer but its a cool idea. Wasn't sure how it really went with the theme. Great first entry.

damagefilter 2021-04-28 18:00

I found this is a good base of a game. I like the idea with the audio clues. But I'd have loved some extrinsic factor to keep paying (and then allow me to play longer than 2 turns). Like - collect those flowers and make a boquet from them. More flowers means a more flowery castle.

If you took too long to pick flowers, the wolf might come to grans castle and eat her. So there's some balancing going on that I'd have to consider while playing.

Other than that tho, a lovely little project. The music is great :D

mizatorian 2021-04-30 13:12

Thanks @hcs-hades @thegamer1123211 for the supportive comments

@jonathan-turner Yes, it needs more obstacles and a puzzle mechanic. Didnt have time to do it due to debugging the game. Maybe later

@pat-cleaver Good idea, i need more gates and in different positions too

@eryn Sorry, ran out of time, so have to make do with 4 levels for now. I plan on adding more levels and mechanics

@boxedmeatrevolution Thanks, I had fun making the game and the sfx

@samazki You go deeper and deeper into the forest? Was all i could think of (that i could possible make in a weekend) that wasn't a driller or a diver.

@damagefilter Thanks for the ideas, yes, there are a lot of ways to take this forward, and i do plan on completing this game a bit more (maybe 15 levels or so)

justcamh 2021-04-30 17:45

Hey matey, thanks for submitting your game to stream! I had fun playing it, and I hope you found the feedback useful! Here's the vod if ya wanna rewatch it;

mizatorian 2021-05-01 12:40

Thanks @justcamh I had a blast watching you live, and the feedback was useful as I did not do any user testing beforehand (oops). Send my regards to your brother too.

tanner-shelton 2021-05-02 05:56

Pretty short but that isn't a bad thing. Art was nice and I liked the audio.

link270 2021-05-02 05:58

It's much better to have a finished short game than anything long. I had fun listening to the audio and running through. Good job at your first jam, imho getting a game finished is such a good feeling it helps you to improve and realize you can actually finish something. haha

1minatur 2021-05-02 05:59

The sounds were great, had me laughing. Loved it. This could be really cool as a fleshed out game, traveling down one of several paths depending on the sounds each makes. Thanks for letting us play!

mizatorian 2021-05-02 06:28

@tanner-shelton @link270 @1minatur Thanks for playing. Watching 3 persons play the game at the same time was a new experience. Each Screen was a bit small though, considering i'm watching on a 1366x768 screen anyway. I do plan on taking the game further, after the jam.

dmitry-mozgin 2021-05-03 17:13

Nice little game! I agree with the comments above that the game has space to grow. In other words, you could experimenting further as @britt-henderson mentioned. Personally, I like the music most, it creates nice mood.

zoarfy 2021-05-04 23:54

Hey I just finished your game. It's of a very nice length, especially for a jam. You have a well put together package here. If I could make a suggestion, I would say it might be fun to have different sounds for each level - so each time you have to decide which is the new "good" noise and which is the new "bad" noise. Congrats on finishing and submitting!

mizatorian 2021-05-07 09:06

@dmitry-mozgin @zoarfy As it was my first non-tutorial game i made in Godot, I made a lot of mistakes and the bugs took up a lot of time to debug Am refactoring the code so it works better and then will releae a V2.0 with the fixes and enhancements. Thanks for the feedback.

gustavo-christino 2021-05-08 05:24

@mizatorian…

I've played your game here (as you asked). :)

I will make the full analysis soon.

**Analysis...**

1 - Mechanics, Learning and Flow: The mechanics is based on choosing between two exits, one that leads to the next stage and another that leads to the belly of the big bad wolf. The audible hint on each exit gives you the right exit, so I suppose some element could be added to limit the character (such as possible enemies or time to complete). Currently the biggest challenge is to understand that the soundtrack exists (and to be able to hold on in relation to going too fast). Another way to elevate the experience could be to give clues on the right path to follow with greater intensity, in such a way that, allied with the addition of other elements, the player's attention can be slightly divided between seeing clues and moving forward quickly, safe and tactical. Learning how to play is simple, the controls are basic and just require some attention and a little patience. The game flow is currently compromised because there is no real challenge (once the sound mechanics are understood).

2 - Graphics, Audio and Narrative: The graphics are simple and clear (serving the purpose of showing the concept of the game). The audio work was very interesting (despite what I mentioned earlier); this mechanic has the potential to be better explored in future projects (inclusive). The narrative is simple and it is an excerpt from the story already known (I missed some change, not because it was necessary, but because I would like some kind of re-reading or humor derived from this type of thing).

3 - Culture: The game is related to the story of "Little Red Riding Hood", which made me think of making new reinterpretations with other similar tales, exploring more narratives, each with the use of interesting (mechanical) elements.

4 - Monetization: I suppose a franchise could be created, each game in the franchise could address several (perhaps a fixed number, for example 7, 10, 12 or 14) games from a particular country. In addition, polishing and improving the challenge could be interesting. With a "multicultural" game at the franchise level and quite different at the level of each game, I believe it could be made available as a cultural piece (perhaps closing an agreement with an institution focused on the cultural strengthening of each country or region).

jonrei 2021-05-13 09:55

peak voice acting!

mizatorian 2021-05-13 17:19

Thanks @gustavo-christino for playing and giving such extensive feedback. I will take this into account in this game and in future games

Thanks @jonrei, I had fun making the sfx

gamebuilder 2021-05-13 17:34

Ha! I like this game a lot. Short and sweet. I love the graphics. The use of audio instead of visual clues is a nice twist. I only wish this game were longer! Nice work.

omiya-games 2021-05-14 00:18

Confession: the first time I played it, I was actually surprised at how short and simple the game was. Fundamentally not a bad thing: I did think the game got its point across. I was mildly reminded of the original Paper Mario's lost woods puzzle game mechanic, where you had to make out the different path that lead to the way to the Boo Mansion.

Game presentation I thought was fine and consistent. Controls were pretty good. I liked the nice touch of very slowly going through each gate, both allowing the player to hear the full sound effect, and making the choice a commitment. I just thought the "clue" to the right path was...really obvious. To a point where playing the game was really trivial.

It may also just be me, but I wonder how many people got "stuck" thinking the locked gates were impassable. While having gates are fine, it might have been a good idea to remove the lock visuals, or else it creates a seemingly impassable graphic.

I assume the game's small scope is due to the lack of time (which I'm guilty of as well), so it's quite understandable the game is a bit bare-bones right now. I personally would like to see more unique methods of trying to distinguish the right path for the game in the near future, to flesh out the game a bit more.

mizatorian 2021-05-14 16:54

@gamebuilder @omiya-games Thanks for giving the game a go. I do admit I spent way too much time on debugging issues with the game-engine and a bit less though on the game level designs. The triviality and length is due to the short time left and just getting a playable and reasonably non-buggy version out before the time limit.
