The game is beautiful, well played!

macdoom 2021-04-26 23:57

Cool game! Keeping up with the two mechanics was challenging. Couldn't got much farther during the third patern. The graphics are amazing and the musicis well thought helping with the rythm. Excellent work

martin183 2021-04-26 23:57

Cool game! I really liked the combination of rythm game and controlling player at same time!

Our game was also on diver's theme btw https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/48/$244397.

norris-eldridge 2021-04-27 00:00

Great concept and the art is great! That 6 streak one too hard for me and my dumb fingers though lol XD

luc-creationallabs 2021-04-27 00:09

I think I'm missing something here, even pressing A,D in the right tempo I keep losing oxygen, never pass 70 meters.

kulfy 2021-04-27 00:14

@luc-creationallabs A (or Q if you're an azerty fellow) and D are for moving your character. But the beats should be hit with your keyboard arrows 😉

danschwobs 2021-04-27 02:15

I'm a bit too tired to play the game very well lol, but I love it! The music, artstyle and gameplay is just fantastic and innovative! Great job guys :v:

kerdelos 2021-04-27 09:13

Very impressed by the mood of the game. The graphics, the music and the gameplay all fit very well together ! Great job ! I'm a bit tire right now so I couldn't get past 448m but I'll make sure to try again once I've had a chance to rest a bit.

nounka 2021-04-27 18:43

Beautiful and great game. As a Big Dance Dance Revolution fan I absolutely wanted to test it. this is a solid jam participation !

andrewkennedy 2021-04-27 21:28

The art and music were phenomenal. There was just enough detail to be interesting, while not being overly distracting. I absolutely love the old nautical chart style.

I had trouble making it past the third pattern. Something about moving with my left hand and doing the music with my right hand was just too much to process haha. Should I have focused on the beat more? Perhaps, but I couldn't leave the money behind!

Great work, I love to see rhythm games done well on LD jams!

david-u 2021-04-28 12:40

Gorgeous graphics. The gameplay involves multitasking which is pretty challenging, and is difficult to keep up with everything and take in the visuals. It is a very good idea, and well executed.

sand-gardeners 2021-04-28 15:05

Cool game, quite hard to get the hang of it but is really enjoyable once you do!

caiolima 2021-04-28 21:16

I've never been a good player of rythim games but I enjoyed you project! I thought managing your attention to collect coins and avoid danger while trying to press the arrows on the correct time quite the challeging! Congrats! o/

jonathan-turner 2021-04-28 22:04

Tough to do the two handed movement, nice presentation.

I didnt make it far, but I liked what I saw.

Good job.

scruffylooking2121 2021-04-29 02:35

Wow, what a gorgeous looking game! The controls were easy to understand once I figured out that left hand was for moving the diver and right had was for keeping the beat. Once I understood that, my overconfident brain barked conflicting orders to my poor fingers, resulting in that beautiful music essentially becoming my poor diver's funeral dirge. I ended up trying both versions, and I appreciate the chance for an easier mode, but I was terrible at both, even when I focused only on the beat. You might give some thought to changing your screenshots, as they show red/fail arrows instead of white/correct arrows. But what an experience! I don't think I'll forget this game. Thanks for making it.

tyrannas 2021-04-29 07:56

@scruffylooking2121 Thank you very much for your review :D And yeah... it's still a bit hard even with a normal mode I'm afraid, it's the curse of the developpers, we spend so much time trying to balance the game and sync everything to the music that we could play this game with our eyes closed! So it's hard to figure how a beginner would perform !

And thanks for the screenshot tips we'll indeed do that haha !

okamit 2021-04-29 10:10

Really interesting gameplay, although very hard as you said! Didn't manage to beat it on hard haha, but maybe I'll try again later. The main issue is that you die very quickly and it takes a while to learn the pattern and get the rythm right and it's easy to loose the right rythm if you get even one beat off and then you have to start over to get back there to try again. Although, the game is quite short so it's not that big of a deal. But it might be a bigger issue if you make the game longer.

The graphics are really nice, very stylish.

Great work!!

vaanrile 2021-04-29 10:17

Really cool game ! The gameplay is really imaginative and well executed, as well as the graphics/sound design, which have a really great production value. I really liked the hand coordination part and personally didn't have much problem with it, eventhough I guess already being used to rhythm games on computer helps quite a lot. Anyways, great job, I appreciated your production a lot !

tyrannas 2021-04-29 10:20

@okamit Thank you very much for the effort it's quite heartwarming to see someone reach the bottom :D And yeah the lives are a problem cause once you get the hang of the rhythm, it's almost impossible to die, we thought of a "transition area" between two biomes were you could try the rhythm of the new biome without losing any life / combo. That might do the trick :D Anyway, thanks for the review! (is your pseudo linked by any chance to okami ?)

kulfy 2021-04-29 10:28

@vaanrile Thanks for the kind words. And glad to hear some people are actually seeing the bottom !

I'll make sure to try your Abyss Waker later in the day. 😉

okamit 2021-04-29 12:03

@tyrannas That sounds like a good idea! I hope I get to play it again in the future with new updates implemented!

Yes in a way, Okami is one of my favourite games and my name is Ulf, which is derived from the old norse word for "wolf", and okami is wolf in japanese!

tyrannas 2021-04-29 12:17

@okamit Oh double meaning ? I like that haha! Okami's my favorite game of all times I think, hence my question ! Anyway thx again and cheers !

okamit 2021-04-29 12:25

@tyrannas Ooh nice! It's a great game to have as favourite game! So incredibly beautiful and stylish! I need to replay it again soon <3

Cheers!

saltysa 2021-04-29 15:53

The game is super pretty and the songs are catchy! It is pretty hard and I liked the challenge of having to do the music part and collect the coins. My only issue is that it's hard to adapt when the rythm changes so I died a lot there. I think your idea of a transition area would definelty makes this easier

But I really liked your game!

tyrannas 2021-04-29 17:20

@saltysa Yeah like we said earlier we're probably gonna try to do a transition zone between biomes ^^

poweranze 2021-04-29 17:40

Beautiful game and cool idea - though very hard to coordinate both hands at the same time! Even when just concentrating on the rhythm and ignoring the coins it was challenging, but very fun and interesting!

willjardine 2021-04-29 22:48

Really lovely game. I wish I was more coordinated tho be able to play it longer.

midamida 2021-04-30 04:37

I liked how you mixed the theme with a rhythm style game. Good test of my multitasking skills, too. Great job.

amaroq 2021-04-30 11:44

Beautiful graphics and music. I like the concept of splitting the movement from the rhythm even though I'm really bad at it ^^'.

theapplecake 2021-04-30 12:34

The music is great and the art is gorgeous. I really like the gameplay and the idea of combining the rythm management with your movement. However, the game is so unforgiving. Not only the pattern changes, but also the tempo of the rythm. Sometimes i really thought i was in sync but it turns out i must have been a few frames early and lost my oxygen almost instantly in the 3rd partition each time. I think adding a small frame of time before (like a few fractions of seconds) would make it less frustrating and would make everything easier to coordinate. (But also i might just be bad at the game, i don't know lol)

crazybot 2021-04-30 12:48

(I never rate based on post jam version) I like the idea and really love the style but it was just way too difficult. and having to focus on both at the same time, no thanks!

I think this would be really fun if it was a bit easier, too bad you had to change that after the jam...

Edit: I now also played the post jam and that was a lot better!

tyrannas 2021-04-30 13:17

@theapplecake yeah that's also something we've done in the postjam version :) the jam version had indeed no acceptance time **before** a note, but the post jam does. Out of curiosity which version did you play ? :)

@crazybot you're definitely right to not rate on the postjam versions! That's the spirit, we linked the post jam for people who also wanted to try a more balanced game ^^ Thx for your review anyway

thesambassador 2021-04-30 15:16

This is a really neat idea, and I really enjoy the art! I wish I could have gotten a bit further, but even as a person who loves rhythm games, I could not seem to really "get" this one.

- The audio seemed like it was popping a bit, and it seemed to start getting off-beat from the song sometimes. Even once I had memorized the pattern, it was clear that things were getting out of sync.

- You have a pretty generous timing window it seems, but it's very unclear where the actual "beat" that a "perfect" timing would be at. Is it immediately when it shows the "highlight" on the arrow? I think an actual scrolling DDR-like UI would have been much better here to properly communicate the actual beat it wants you to hit at.

Besides these, I really enjoy these rhythm + something else types of games. This could be very cool with a bit more refinement!

kristof 2021-04-30 15:27

I am starting a petition to name the "Normal" mode "Hard" and the "Hard" mode "Insane" :D But jokes aside, I think the game looks beautiful and the music is great. I think the game idea is refreshing for a LD game. It is just way too difficult for me (even the post jam version). Congrats on the finished entry!

theapplecake 2021-04-30 15:28

@tyrannas To be honest i already don't remember but by the feeling of it i guess i played the jam version. I'll give it another shot with the postjam !

Edit : Yes i definitely played the jam version before. This one is more accessible and it's really such a good game with the addition of the acceptance time, so more enjoyable and less frustrating ! Awesome work !

the-body 2021-04-30 15:31

Nice 2D art and idea. I am not sure about the breathing system, the visualization could be probably more intuitive. But overall good job, great concept! .)

tyrannas 2021-04-30 17:39

@thesambassador Thank you for the constructive feedback! We really tried working on the timing but you are right something feels off, don't know why or how, since the timers used for the rhythm are based on the bpm of the songs and the songs are created with a software that don't allow to go out of sync. However the acceptance window is indeed large, (1/4 of the timer between two note **before** the note, and the whole time between a note and the next **after**). Maybe we should reduce the window after the note, since it can be a bit confusing.

Anyway we're planning to add probably a real scrolling indicator, and also transition phases between biomes! thx again :)

@kristof haha alright, but someone already asked us to create a "hardcore" mode with only random patterns! But we can definitely add an easy mode ;)

solah 2021-05-01 14:04

Wow, that's hard, I died pretty quickly xD. Very fun to make a rythm game while you try to get collectables, this make sthe game really challenging. The art is great also! Well done!

secretpocketcat 2021-05-03 15:58

Really neat, though I just couldn't make it thru the 3rd pattern, not even after trying the postjam version. But I'm quite bad at rhytm games so I guess that doesn't tell you that much anyway  At first it took me like 5 tries to actually realise how the game worked. I kept thinking that the first pattern change was actually the only one I was supposed to match.

tyrannas 2021-05-03 16:57

@secretpocketcat haha don't worry you're not the only one! Thank you for trying 5 times though, not all people make that effort ! If I may ask, What do you think could have helped you understand better ?

secretpocketcat 2021-05-03 17:16

I went back just to notice the arrows are mentioned at the very start with the arrowkeys being pretty obvious. Now I feel even dumber  Just using those arrows from the start screen for the first pattern for a few repetitions would probably work. More obvious feedback on missing and/or hitting a pattern could help as well I think.

etrealjunior 2021-05-04 18:49

Hi all right !, Congratulations on the game, the high point of it is the really beautiful art, I missed a bluish transparent front layer to give that feeling of embarrassment as it happens in the water, the gameplay ends up being impaired because in the itch you did not activate the fullscreem button and many people may be dying for not seeing the information on the screen, a big hug to everyone, and I await your evaluations regarding my game.

turgunen 2021-05-05 17:57

Very beautiful game  The music was on point too. It took me a couple of times before I got the oxygen thing right. After that I really enjoyed it. Damn, I can't praise the art enough :see_no_evil: Amazing work!

tyrannas 2021-05-06 14:55

@turgunen wow that's really heartwarming to hear, thank you very much for your review :D

ivan-nosov 2021-05-09 18:49

Great style. Good teaching. An interesting find with air supply.
