Nice
Not bad.
@gonzalo-barrionuevo @supergamersgames Thanks for playing! We've noticed some issues with collecting parts and we're working on fixing them in an update, so feel free to check back later for the complete experience.
This was pretty cool, really liked the idea of finding parts on a planet and driving around to explore.
The idea of game is not something special but it's fun to play and I like its style
And music... that's amazing ;)
The atmosphere ist great. It think I found a bug: I collected an item and went back to the ship, but in the menu the item was still not marked as collected. General some feedback (sound or visual) would have been nice during storing of items in the ship. I would have liked a "jump-boost" mechanic. Still great work!
@william-chan @glebsviripa Thank you! We're glad you enjoyed it.
@shadow30 Thanks for the feedback. That sounds like a bug. The part should have been marked off in your menu. What version were you running? It's funny you mention the jump. We actually had that but it didn't seem to fit so we cut it.
Really enjoyed the sense of scale this game had. Great work!
@bebadboi hey, thanks for playing!
The graphics were awesome. Didn't get very for or find anything other than more sand but maybe I'm doing something wrong
I'd love to know how you made the atmosphere and the dust storm effect, looks AAA! Great job!
The inverted mouse controls throw me off a lot. Otherwise, it's a fun game. I especially enjoy the sense of speed you give the player by zooming out the camera and having all of those dust particles. Zoooooom!!!
@whysguy52 thanks, sorry you didn't find anything though. It's a pretty big world and the intention was that you'd take some time to just cruise around and explore. The parts menu (ESC) also has some hints for locations you're looking for.
@mhorth Appreciate the compliment! The atmosphere was done using a sphere with inverted normals that follows the camera (transparent, so you can see the skybox through it). It has two panning dust textures and depth fades over 100m so you can't see where it meets the ground. It also uses the dot product of the sun direction and the view direction to create a soft scattering halo around where the sun appears in the skybox.
The dust storm effect is actually pretty simple since most of the heavy-lifting is taken care of by the atmosphere sphere (heh), just a few world space dust particles and an animated sand texture on the terrain. It's surprisingly convincing for how simple it is.
Nice graphics, and I like the sense of scale that the game has. The particles and effects were spot on.
Thanks @kr0s! Glad you liked it.
@flashviper hah sorry about the mouse. Glad it didn't hamper the rest of the experience, though. Thanks for zooooomin!
I was confused about what to do. Later I toggled god mode, turned off the exciting music and just drove around and it was great.
@ruruie Glad someone got use out of the options! That's exactly what they're there for.
Dryver was a very beautiful and enjoyable game to play and explore! The models and atmosphere were absolutely lovely throughout! I positively loved the green glow of the desert temple and the dunes were both great to drive across and beautifully lit! I have nothing but excellent kudos for the artistic direction of this project!
I can understand the concern @whysguy52 pointed out - the map was quite large, and at times it did feel difficult to be sure if you were going in a productive direction. I have to give kudos to you for implementing several features that helped me during the playthrough, though! When I was feeling like the fuel limitations were really making difficult finding anything, I realized you had implemented an optional god mode into it that made finishing up my exploration that much easier!
At a certain point I was about ready to put down the game because I didn't know how much I had found and how much I still had left to go, when I realized that the escape menu both had a handy checklist of all the objects to be found and notes on where to find each. It took some time, but knowing that there were those guides helped me to find the rest of the parts! Still, some variety of indicator (like pieces of machinery leading off in the various directions) would go a long way to making it easier to follow through!
I did feel extremely triumphant upon finding the final of the pieces - that said, I experienced an issue where no matter how much I drove over the piece, I wasn't able to pick it up. oh no.png
I had a bit of difficulty with handling, and while ultimately having a mouse camera panning functionality may have improved the options for search, I found it too sensitive and tended not to touch my mouse unless necessary - some variety of camera lock forward would be excellent!
Ultimately, an excellent game, and great job putting this together throughout the course of a Jam! It had an excellent atmosphere, smooth play, and a lot of enjoyable options! I think it would benefit from a little more indication toward the escape menu, which had a great amount of useful information, and some variety of indicator when your ship took the part you brought back, but even without these features it was quite playable and enjoyable! ☆☆☆☆☆ You should be proud!
@briibot Wow, thanks for the kind words and _great_ feedback! Really appreciate the detailed comments. Super happy you were able to put the god mode to use and find all the parts (even if one bugged out, oops). Don't worry, you didn't miss _too_ much, just a little victory animation of the ship taking off.
I agree completely regarding the escape menu. One of the AI's voicelines mentions using ESC to open it, but it would definitely be better if we reinforced it more.
We originally wanted the parts to have unique functions, such as a compass to help locate other parts, but that got scrapped due to time constraints and as a consequence the map is indeed a bit on the big side. Glad things worked out alright for you regardless with the god mode, though.
Thanks for participating in the jam!
Lets just say this: driving things around is generally fun and you didnt disappoint. I liked driving the shuttle around the desert, that was cool.
What I didnt enjoy was the camera controls which were all over the place and appeared to be inverted weirdly?
I also didnt really understand how to pick a direction to find a part, drove for a while, ran out of energy and then died. So maybe some indication of a beacon or something to help guide you would be helpful, especially with the energy mechanic.
I liked the song and also liked the atmosphere you created.
Nice work!
@jonathan-turner Thanks, glad you liked it! Sorry the camera controls weren't as great.
As for finding the parts, the parts list (press ESC) has some hints as to where they can be found. You were intended to just explore, looking for interesting objects on the horizon to investigate, but I agree that it's not as obvious as it could be. As I mentioned in my last comment, we originally wanted the parts to have unique functions, such as a compass to help locate other parts, but that got scrapped due to time constraints, unfortunately.
Appreciate the play/rate/comment regardless!
Really like expolrer this desert. Music is catchy. THe sky and particles are very nice
@valky Hey thanks! Glad you enjoyed them.
Exceptional work. Graphics and music are excellent. I'm impressed by the trick you used to get voice acting to your game; I would never have thought of it. Great job
I enjoyed this a lot. The feeling of driving from the audio, music, FOV, and particles was very fun (fun enough to keep doing it over empty sand for long enough to finish the game). Atmosphere looked great. I didn't feel like I was going deeper since the parts were largely in a circle around me - could have been an opportunity there to make the player navigate between multiple known charging points to reach a further point, but I know the parts already take a while to track down. I also would have liked to coast to a stop instead of immediately respawning when running out of charge - I was within reach of a charger a few times. The FOV does make it harder to read the charge bar when actually driving, too. That sounds like a lot of negatives but honestly they're mostly polish; really great game.
@crowvax Thanks! Glad you liked the voice-acting-on-a-budget.
@bmacintosh Appreciate the kind words (and the thorough comment)! Totally with you on all your critiques, we started with that "going between known charge points" idea but ended up reducing it to the current layout to make it easier to play since we didn't have time for quality of life features to make the _really deep_ collectibles not-impossible to find. And good feedback on the battery UI getting harder to see the further the camera is zoomed out, that's just a bit of an oversight from developing on big monitors (oops lol).
I liked it over all. I liked the voice acting and the look and design of it. I think it felt a little empty and lacked some direction, but I enjoyed the experience. Great job on the texturing.
Cool idea. I loved just Turing on god mode and cruising around. That was the best part about it. I think I had a bug that would cause to stop moving every now and again that kinda messed with the experience a little. Either way very good game and fun to spend some time with.
Very cool game, really great fun to drive around and you made it look really beautiful. It would be nice to have a little bit more feedback, like maybe knowing how many pieces you had delivered out of the bunch. Really great fun and well executed, well done!
@weirdybeardyman Thanks for the feedback! We're glad you enjoyed it. In the menu when you press escape there is actually a list of all the items you need to pick up and they get marked when you return them to the ship. It also has hints on where to find them.
Toggle God Mode? Yes. Commence endless joyride. :motorboat: :desert: :cloud_tornado:
@kovakomes aw yeah :sunglasses: Thanks for playing!
This game looks very nice, and very good effects) True, I did not quite figure out what to do at the very beginning, it might be nice to make the tutorial more visual)
Wow this is impressive. Love the setting and the computer voice is spot on. Great work!
@cethin oh wow sorry I had no idea!
Good job! I love the voice an the environment. Speed feels so nice!
@lostsense Thanks! That's a good point, it was more implied by the voicelines to find the parts than explicit. It probably would be good to add some more reinforcement to convey the current objective.
@amerigo-gazaway Thanks! Glad you liked it.
@ladycerberus Appreciate it! And I agree, I think going fast is pretty fun too.
Awesome graphics and world! Ended up turning the music down and just enjoyed the SFX, good desolate ambiance. Would have liked to see the vehicle respond to the terrain more, maybe bank downhill when on a slope?
@cottontshirtz Thanks! The SFX turned out really nice. They gave a good feel to the world and made you feel like a part of it. The vehicle does match the terrain from front to back but you're right that it doesn't bank. That was something we wanted to have but didn't get around too.
Hello,
Good jobs ! I like the game concept and I feel a little emotion to explore this sand planet. The music is perfect for the ambiance, the graphism put you in game athmosphere.
It's not an easy game (or I am a bad player :p) but after few trying we understand game mechanics and I like challenge :)
I used the web version and I have a little problem with mouse. Sometimes because my mouse gone out of the screen when my mouse go back on it, the camera was rotate so I see the side of the ship. After some movement of the mouse, the camera come back in the right position. Code controles is not easy. But if they are something to improve, it will be that.
I've not read any of the comments so I write my review as a pure first experience.
The intro text on the page is interesting and adds a nice bit of mystery. Main menu music adds to this mood of mystery.
The game could use a loading bar after the main menu as I had a black screen for a while.
Onboarding is clear with a nice female voice. Is it voice acting or synthetic voice?
Mouse controls over the camera is a little fiddly. With my dual monitor setup, I ran into problems where my view was backward and I couldn't get it turned right. Maybe disallow the camera from going all around the ship and have some rubber band to return the camera in proper place after panning.
The atmosphere was beautiful and the music complimented the action nicely. If I heard correctly there is dynamic volume scaling tied to player velocity? If so well done as it feels good.
Finding the items was not that hard, but more effort into signposting would have been nice. I also ran into a bug where I was carrying Fuel Cell and tried to pick up Plasma Relay and it just disappeared.
I feel that the driving around feels nice and juicy, but isn't enough alone to carry the interest. It would require some more skill elements like avoiding enemies, pits or falling meteors. Something like that.
Overall good entry that feels quite nice to play, but lacks a key (skill)element that would make it interesting. The game fits nice into the jam theme of going deeper.
Interesting game, a lot of effort went into this you can tell, i had an issue where the curser wasnt disabling and i have 2 screens so evenually it went off the screen and the camera would stop panning. but other than that a really solid entry.
@florianduf Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the atmosphere and sorry you had trouble with the mouse. The WebGL builds always seems to mess with the sensitivity. :disappointed:
@keppu Thanks for the detailed feedback! Yeah, we didn't anticipate the WebGL version to take so much longer to load since the Windows build loads almost instantly, hence why we didn't have a loading bar. Figured that was a "feature" not a "bug fix" so we didn't make an update for it. Sorry you also had trouble with the camera. We did want you to be able to look around all the way, but I agree, it could probably use some tuning to snap back into "forward" position faster.
You did hear correctly, the volume is dynamic when you go faster. Glad someone noticed.
Thanks for the heads-up on the collection bug, thought we squashed all of them but I guess one slipped through. Oops.
@steelax thanks, sorry to hear your cursor got stuck off the screen. Hopefully was still an enjoyable experience.
The planet is awesome and, well, atmospheric. The music is outstanding. Overall it's a great game. The only thing it lacks is the sense of progression. You're just trying to find parts one by one in no particular order. It would be great if with these parts you acquired upgrades for your vehicle, like fuel tank, scanner, speed booster, etc. This would make searching a bit more fun and exciting at the end. It's just a piece of constructive criticism. Overall it's a nice game and I had a lot of fun playing it.
@bereg Thanks! And would you believe that was our original idea? Unfortunately we realized it wouldn't be feasible to finish with the time constraints, but we would have loved to make the different parts have meaningful upgrades.
@bereg As with all good LD entries we tried to focus on the most important aspects of the game and cut anything that didn't actually improve that. This entry we knew, especially after the first pass of the controller, that driving was the critical component. Collecting items was just a way to have you drive around and explore. We would have loved to expand on the collection aspect and have it add to the game over time, but we wanted the first experience to be the best experience and didn't want to spend time and resources on essentially content cut from that initial experience.
great work all around, it was definitely better for me when i downloaded the game
@gorethumb thanks for playing! :smiley:
Great effects and music, though I found the camera impossible to manage being inverted and very sensitive. I only managed to find the fuel cell. You don't seem to have enough energy to actually explore the place. For webgl builds, make sure you have an alternative to the escape key as that exits full screen mode.
During those journeys I expected to see some huge sandworms! Very cool game! The music suits this game. I love those fx during ride, foggy sky with this fast wind is awesome! About controls... they're fine until you start using mouse, the camera starts to be little bit unpredictable then. Besides this, great work!!!
Well done ! The driving feels great, and the graphics coupled with the music give an amazing atmosphere to the game ! I really enjoyed driving trough the dunes ! Of course there are a few bugs, the controls are a bit wacky, especially for the camera, the physics of the car is wierd when you collide with obstacles, but the core experience is so well made that it is really secondary.
Reminds me of Race the Sun, similar vibes but this has more of a mission based loop. Always fun to go fast Also the desert was really well realised. great work
Really cool game I was zoomin AF! I wish there were more opportunities to get *hella* air >:) The fuel meter was a little hard to see with the camera angle sometimes, but I like that it's shown in the world and not on a UI. Had a lot of fun playing!
Reversed mouse axis 0/5 reported for hate crime.
But seriously though... The game looks gorgeous, this might be the best looking 3D game i've played so far.Soundtrack is cool.
When you don't move the camera fov is pain. I understand that this is for the s t y l e, but having something closer to two digit number would be great cause unless you are moving you can't really see anything.
(And i think plasma relay is broken, you can't pick it up)
The graphics got me to play it. Very good job on the presentation overall. I liked the music, but it didn't really feel like it fit the kind of game this was. I initially expected this to be some sort of racing game based on the audio.
The game looks great and driving feels great. Also good job on the audio. The music is nice, but maybe it doesn't fit the game so well. Turning the camera with the mouse feels kind of wrong. And not being able to go backwards, even at a low speed, may also not be the best choise.
But if you put a little bit more work into this game, it could become pretty good and very pleasing to play.
Hey! Good job! You could implement ship movement by applying force to ground, so it would look floatier.
@someone @filgru @jrevel @radmccool @itsboats @skoopidy @liero116 @majadroid @srknvrnbskrt Thanks everyone for trying out our game! Appreciate all the feedback! :smile:
Had a lot of fun with this, but was unable to find the final piece. The atmospheric effects were really well done. I had to leave the mouse totally alone. The beacon lighting up the home base was a really nice touch so I never got lost going back. Thanks for making and sharing your game.
@scruffylooking2121 Thanks for playing! Glad you noticed the beacon, that was the plan.
Had a pretty good time with this one. Just a few things to say about it. The mouse control was WAY too sensitive for the looking and I would have liked to be able to tilt the camera as well as rotate. I did beat the game without turning on god mode, but personally I found that the most fun part of this game was zooming around and doing jumps off the dunes to the sweet music ( I also appreciated how the music got louder and more intense the faster you went). That said I felt the energy system wasn't really needed. Since you can only carry one piece at a time, you have to return to the ship every time anyway, so there's not really any point in preventing the player from freely exploring the desert. It also took away some immersion in the world having the charge stations at each location made it felt like someone deliberately took these pieces out to these locations. If there was no energy system you would not need the charge stations which would make it feel more like the pieces of the ship got scattered into the desert. In regards to the movement, it was very enjoyable! But the decrease of acceleration going up hills was WAY too much and made it actually impossible to go up some hills(notably you cannot exit one side of the 4 section big pillar because it is just too steep. Like I said before, my favorite part was just zooming around so I wanted to be able to build up more speed and not have to worry about these big hills in my way as much. You could still have a bit of speed decrease just not as much. Other note would be some sort of display to show if I am carrying anything and what I am carrying. Other than that, good job!
@rhoka Thanks for the feedback! We're glad you enjoyed driving around. The energy was there partially because the world isn't all that big, time restraints and all, so we wanted a way to prevent hitting the edges that wasn't just a wall, though there is a wall just in case. I still think it is generally the right direction to go with it, but, if we expanded upon the game, it would need to be reworked entirely.
Getting the balance right on the slopes was tough but there are some places where it breaks down, like the one you mentioned. It wasn't as harsh for a while but you lose the feeling of being connected with the terrain if it doesn't slow you down enough. I agree that it might be a little too slow going up some hills though. There is actually a system we built to make it easier to go up hills but you lose some control that we cut for time. That may have helped.
This game was a nice experience. Driving feels pretty smooth and the lights are great in this one. The only thing I didn't enjoy much was the camera sensibility, because it made me feel sick sometimes, but maybe thats just personal preference. Nice entry!
@villanelle Thanks for playing! Sorry about the camera, WebGL seems to mess with the sensitivity for some reason.
