Awesome game! Loved how you interpreted the theme!
Cool game!
This is really funny, I broke your game, I made it pretty far, then I had only a 4th or 8th of health left, then with the last two attackers I suddenly could not move left or right anymore. They ran into my spear anyway and I killed them. Then I chose to lose some attack strength but by the time the last wave came in my guy had dropped to the ground. But not dead, the wave still keeps going back and forth :-)
Other than that this is a really cool game!
The storytelling is very nice, I like how just by using the right couple of words it feels like looking back on the heroic life of this brave rectangle hero ;-)
The music and sounds also fit the atmosphere really well.
Overall a great experience, thank you and keep up the good work!
I like how you turn upside down the idea that "you get stronger to fight stronger enemies". The game itself is rather simple, but that makes the theme all the more clear, and makes it very easy to get into. Your attacks feel very solid too, especially when you're not old... Which makes it that much clearer you're losing your power. Great job!
This is so far one of the best theme interpretation that I saw for this jam. Brilliantly done! :)
That was awesome! Love the idea of getting a malus every round! Super simple but tons of fun!
Pretty clever idea and well executed. I think that the music didn't get along with the narrative too well. It feels too joyful, I guess. Other than that, it is a very innovative and well done entry!
Congratulations!
You made my day! Perfect game!
Oh man what a brilliant interpretation of the theme & a great subversion of normal game expectations. Brilliant work.
I have killed 51 men before dying due to lack of movement :D Really nice game! - **Concept review:** This illustrates "running out of power" flawlessly. Like an old warrior who slowly noticed his powers dwindling, I had to pick carefully which skills were the most important NOT to lose (hint: MOVEMENT) Music was all right, graphics were simple but efficient.
- **Gameplay review:** Simple commands are always the best commands, and this game shows that well. I liked trying different combinations of weaknesses (obviously the optimal play is to get rid of health first because it will never regenerate anyway, and then get rid of attack because movement is way too important. But I tried most of the combinations anyway) my only complaint would be that it is sometimes unclear whether an enemy is going to be OHKO'ed or not, and those who take more than one hit to kill will take a LOT of hits. But it occupied me for a while so an overall great game :)
I love the idea of the upgrades hindering you instead of helping and it had a nice story to explain it too! Simple graphics but effective none the less. Good Job!
Awesome game! The sound when you hit an enemy is very satisfying and the minimalistic style of the game feels really good too. The way the story is told is very cool too. And being able to choose what power to lose is also much better than just losing a bit of everything. It gives you a little of strategy to do and you can choose what style of playing you want. I really liked it. It would be very cool if it had an ending. If you could possibly kill them all at the minimum power, then you could add some ending or something
Cool mechanics cool design :) I really like it +1
Really nice game! I just kept choosing health untill i could no more haha, agility seems most important. I managed to get 70! I really like the storytelling aspect of the game. Well done!
Very very fun love it !
Very very fun love it !
Thanks everyone for playing my game and giving feedback :grinning:
@gonutz I' glad you enjoyed my game!! I did specifically tested the case where you clear the level and die at the same time, and it was fine, maybe i broke it later when changing my code. :(
@glimaleite thanks for the feedback on the music. I agree the music is a bit too cheerful but I didn't have enough time / skill to make it better unfortunately :p It was the first time I make music and I was pretty happy that there were music at all haha
@zdeno I'm happy that you enjoyed it!
@adrien-dittrick interesting view on the powers. During my play testing I found that losing attack damage is the worst because even if your character can't move, as long as he can one hit kill enemy, it was fine. Once it start requiring more than 1 hit, the character dies very easily due to the overwhelming number of enemies. To make it work I decided to make the damage to be a random number generated from a range. That's why you sometimes seea 1 hit kill and sometimes you don't. However I agree that it would feel frustrating for the player when this is not clear. I did not think of that at the time. Thanks for the feedback!
@peredom I figured probably no one would be able to get to the ending (I managed to get to it once during my many play throughs) and time constraint so I didn't make an ending. Did you get to the end? If so, well done!
Really great name, the only nitpick I have is that I wouldn't have showed the percentages that you are going to loose, seems like a pointless bit of information, but that's just my opinion, also the conceit that it is the warrior telling his story afterwards 10/10 great idea
Cleverest take on the theme I've seen.
Wow, really liked this! Great use of the theme, very entertaining and engaging. I just wanted to keep playing again and again, trying different strategies. And the killing of the enemies is really juicy.
There is an ending? Gotta see that!
@zdeno there wasn't one sorry if I mislead you into thinking that :(
@jackyjjc oh.."didn't make the ending" :grinning:
I was so excited when I saw that post that I forgot how to read..
Well, while I was trying to beat the game, I found possible glitch that makes the game simpler..but still hard enough for me to not get past 69 kills :grinning:
Not sure if it is desirable behaviour or not. But while your attack is active, you can quickly toggle left/right and enemies will get hit more times, this makes it easier when your damage is low.
@zdeno hmmm interesting find, I didn't think of that. Changing direction during attack animation is intentional otherwise the combat feels less responsive. However I didn't anticipated the 'exploit' thanks for letting me know!
Another compliment on your interpretation of the theme! I had fun playing this:)
The story was cool but I would've switched up what he said each time so it felt like he's getting eeeven weaker. "I've lost some blank over the years" "And still my blank fades" "I had just enough blank to keep on fighting, nothing more." Otherwise no complaints, the combat was surprisingly fun for how simple it is!
(Oh yeah! Also, playing on Web, I died just as I completed a wave and the game soft-locked.)
A game where senility is an interpretation of running out of power? This is great.
Very very fun ! The spear gameplay is awesome and it's a real pleasure to kill several wariors in one move ! The finish move after a wave is satisfying too :) The concept is brilliant, I love it, and it suits the theme more than perfectly ! Congrats !!
Nice game, it's fun and addictive. The idea of losing instead of gaining powers is great.
I love the take on the theme! a really creative way of looking at the problem. I like that you can run multiple people through with your spear, it helps the gameplay a lot. the touch at the end of each wave is nice, too. i understand the simple style, but i'd like to see a little more done to make things more clear when the screen starts to fill up with bodies (more contrast between the player and enemies, probably). the music grated on me too.
This is an excellent take on the theme. The graphics are simple but it's well presented nonetheless. I really enjoyed the combat due to having to time the attack. It was very satisfying killing an enemy while they were still falling from the air at the start of each level. I tried reducing health over and over but you limited this which was a good idea (I was wondering what would happen if I tried to halve 1 HP).
Definitely an interesting way to tell the story using this theme. I wonder if it might work better if the things you lose weren't your choice though? It probably wouldn't be as good for gameplay but it would reflect the again process a little better. Perhaps it could be determined by how you handle each round; for example, if you rely on jumping around a lot, it takes a toll on your legs, so your movement is reduced.
There isn't a ton of content in this but it's a good idea executed well. Going forward, you could add more content in the form of other weapons, shields, bosses, etc. It may dilute the idea of the game though. Anyway, this was really good.
Awesome job interpreting the theme as having the player to lose some of their powers. The music and graphics were both simple but felt very effective and fit the overall atmosphere of the game quite well. There is a minor bug where the player sticks to the walls, but it didn't at all distract from gameplay. Thanks for submitting this fun game!
This is my favorite interpretation of the theme so far. I toyed with doing this sort of idea myself as an RPG-ish game but figured it was out of scope. I never thought of doing it in other genres.
---
Graphics are basic but they work well. Music and Sound Effects were serviceable if a tad loud (super easy fix for that though so not docking points there). There were a few little bugs like being able to keep stabbing even when dead as long as you hadn't dropped your spear yet, but Overall I liked it a bunch.
---
If I could make one suggestion it would be that when the option comes up for which power to lose next, I should be able to select that with the wasd/spacebar controls and not have to use the mouse. Switching between control inputs is awkward
Really nice game, the theme was well embedded into the game and the game told an interesting story. As other has said it was a really interesting interpretation of the theme and I haven't seen any other game do something similar like this game.
The actual gameplay was basic but I enjoyed it but it became quite repetitive after a while and didn't hold my attention for long. I wish the attack swing was a bit faster so there wasn't a delay, made it a bit rough to play.
I experienced a weird bug when I played the game, after I had killed the 10 men the character just laid down on the ground and the storytelling continued but I couldn't do anything. Maybe it was because I reduced my health with 50% or something, not sure.
Good job, though!
**Overall game impression:** I really like the sound of war drums as background music. Adds a REALLY cool feel to the game. Gameplay is pretty simple and smooth. (Jumping is ridiculous though). Gameplay is quite basic and simple but not bad at all, quite enjoyable and soothing to be honest. I also like the little story you included with the game, always a nice touch when you give players some story not just- here's a game and no story at all for why all of this is happening (mistake I made in my first LD entry for the LD38 haha) Good job overall.
**Suggestions and comments on improvement:** Jumping needs to be adjusted.
I liked that there was a story, but it seemed a bit slow at the start. The idea itself was very neat. I loved that you could choose which powers to lose instead of the game forcing you in a certain direction. The jumping felt a bit weird though. It's also possible to stick to the walls, which was a bit of a problem when I was trying to run all the way to one side and tried to jump over the guys following me. Often, my guy would stick to the wall in that scenario and wouldn't jump at all, which made a lot of guys run into me :( Overall, this is a great game. Well done! :)
This is a really nice concept, and I would love to see you expanding on that! It's my favorite interpretation of the theme so far, and one I would never have thought of, good job! Could use more work in the writing part, I was a little disappointed to see all the reaction lines were really similar. The choices you had to make felt meaningful, I did't enjoy the fighting mechanics themselves very much. But overall, it's a great idea, thanks for your entry! :)
I really liked this! Your graphical style is deceptively simple, but really effective.
I enjoyed the way that the spear was effective for a while after attacking, so I could sort of run through my opponents, and then turn around and have the spear tip hit another opponent. It would've been cool to have the spear head change color or something to denote when the tip is in a damaging state.
Great use of the theme, and the powering down mechanic was very original. I also like the little bit of storytelling in there. The player does power down in really big stages, but I think this works well in the context of a short jam game play through. The theme is therefore communicated to its full extent. Good work!
I don't understand your rank xD, sorry bro, but i trully had no fun playing your game, a lot of bug for such a simple game...
Only attack, no deep design, i just have to press space (and trully the attack is tooooo slow, then i just have to attack once and move to kill every ennemy)
There is no interesting choice, because i will always choose to reduce movement, because i don't give a fuck about it, because i can't run away. then health, because ennemy don't do a lot of damage....
then the waves have no spawn system. The AI is quite dumb, i don't know why they are not running after me....
I loved it! Very interesting interpretation of the theme, and the gameplay felt really solid and polished. It also seemed well balanced on the compromises you can choose :)
65 killed :grinning:
Nice story! I included it in my Ludum Dare 39 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtKz5DBYziE
