The boss is too hard. Can only deal half damage to him. Overall game is really good, a lot of work has been done here. Did you sleep at all?

flying-cat-of-the-pepes 2019-10-07 00:14

Amazing game, really impressed that you could do this much in the compo. I had one bug a couple times where if you tried walking to the next scene sometimes (where everything freezes and the camera moves to the right), it wouldn't work and the player would just fall out of the world. I think it happened one of the times when I was moving too fast

really good work tho!

animo-tree 2019-10-07 00:19

Thought is was good, I liked how you had to unlock every thing on the menu. I did think there was a lot of unfair enemy placement and I ended up quieting because I couldn't beat the boss and didn't like the fact that you had to fight the boss on conveyor belts, but all in all I really liked the game, it had good graphics, a world that I was completely invested in and I had fun playing the game.

crunchykingcobra 2019-10-07 00:33

Very impressive. That gag with the conveyor belts was enough to win me over.

I gave up on the boss though. It's like starting megaman from the beginning and then choosing to fight the toughest boss with no equipment. When he started tossing multiple blades at once I gave up - I can't do bullet-hell style manoeuvres with a slow character on conveyor belts.

Excellent work.

eugsun 2019-10-07 00:34

Really enjoyed the game from start to... almost finish. Tried to beat that boss for 10 times but had to quit. Loved all the upfront unlocking in the menu, the music, the control, the style. Great job!

zanyg 2019-10-07 02:43

Very good. Most of my complaints are minor nitpicks: the unlock jingle became a little annoying after the dozenth time, I could beat the boss fight on my first try by standing in the mdidle, not trying to dodge any attacks, and just holding down Z (reading the other reviews, has the fight been nerfed since then?), I'd like some more detail in the large patches of solid tile (when half the screen is covered, its better to have it more than just one color), and there was one blind jump with one tile that went directly into spikes towards the end of the second stage. Other than that, loved the music and the art. Classic Mega Man goodness.

bendmorris 2019-10-07 04:05

I loved this, fantastic work. You really nailed the Mega Man inspired soundtrack, and the levels were incredibly well designed given the time constraint. I planned to see it through to the end, but unfortunately I died a few times on Stage 3 and instead of reloading, I got a black screen.

ddrkirbyisq 2019-10-07 04:20

@bendmorris Ah, unfortuate! Sorry about that, I'll have to dig into that =( Thanks for playing!

jonno 2019-10-07 06:28

Can't believe you managed to cram this into 48 hours. Very well done!

lukvasando 2019-10-07 22:43

I am astonished by your game! You made this in 48 hours!? You must be a living gamedev god!

mrpiedpiper 2019-10-07 23:44

This was excellent. Played it from start to finish, and enjoyed it thoroughly. Great music, great interpretation of the theme, great gameplay, great graphics, it was just... all great.

Amazing job!

2019-10-08 03:05

This game is incredible! Very good job.

mao 2019-10-08 04:06

Really good gameplay and music! I'm curious what will happen next...

The boss doesn't telegraph his attacks very much, but the battle is still beatable.

peachtreeoath 2019-10-08 05:26

Wow there is a lot here... I was definitely smiling during the ending sequence cuz I knew that beautiful quote was about to come up.

First up, the upgrade mechanics. At first glance I had assumed it'd be a typical 'unlock everything' game that I see in LD from time to time. But you really made it interesting right off the bat by only having the "unlock right" happen, that was brilliant. Cuz then you place players in a 1-directional puzzle and you only focus on that. It wasn't gimmicky and I liked how woven into the gameplay it all was.

Secondly, the megaman-ness. This game is great. As a MM vet, the game is a bit on the easy side but the boss is tuned just right. Got him on first try but barely, since the blade speed is super fast. The pacing and difficulty felt to me like a modern take on the older MMs.

I've been following you for a bit now. This is your first compo game correct? If so, why'd you go solo and how was the experience? I say that cuz this LD was my first solo LD as well so it felt very different. Also, I've always wondered since you're clearly one of the best here at making awesome tunes. How long does it normally take you to crank out a theme?

chuchuw 2019-10-08 06:00

Nice game. You really did a good use of megaman codes.

flokami 2019-10-08 06:21

I don't even know how you make so much in such limited time ! It's incredible and maybe the best LD45 game i've played for now !

ddrkirbyisq 2019-10-08 07:47

@peachtreeoath: Thanks! I'm glad I got another MM player appreciating the style of my work :) I'm also super happy you expected that quote at the end, you really do know your mega man! Haha...

This is not my first compo game actually! I've made 8 solo compo games for LD before -- see https://ddrkirby.com/games/games.html for the full list. [Ripple Runner](https://ddrkirby.com/games/ripple-runner/ripple-runner.html) in particular is my most famous work as it took 2nd place and got pretty popular.

I usually do the jam with my partner-in-crime but they are out of town this weekend so I decided to take the opportunity to do some old school mega man styled work! Doing the compo event is definitely very different, having a full 24 hours less means you really have to take things and run with it, but on the plus side, it's 33% less draining and it's easier to kind of just push through it....

With regards to music composition, I'm very very fast :) Most of my composition practice comes from doing [One Hour Compo](http://compo.thasauce.net/compos/view/OHC) every week, which really helped me practice getting into an efficient and speedy workflow over the years. So all of those songs are written in a single hour.

For a typical "polished" piece of music I would say I usually spend on the order of ~5 hours total -- usually 3-4 hours for the draft and then another 1-2 hours for finishing touches, balancing, tuning, etc. But it also varies a lot depending on how smoothly it's going.

For Ludum Dare I typically write songs very quickly -- each song will take 1 hour or less. For this particular game it was even faster than that since I already knew the instrumentation and style that I wanted to do, and I also limited myself as much as I could to composing in the 2A03 chiptune style (2 pulse channels only, etc). The songs themselves were pretty short too - often under 1 minute long. So the metal man remix, for example, only took **34 minutes** in its entirety to write.

Thanks for your writeup, and thanks for playing my game!

peachtreeoath 2019-10-08 08:18

ooo ok, yea I started around LD34 so I missed those ones, I'll definitely have to check out your history more. I can definitely see why Ripple Runner did well. I haven't seen a game use a reflection mechanic that well since http://www.ferryhalim.com/orisinal/g2/stars.htm

Yea solo vs group work is pretty interesting now that I've experienced it. On one hand with solo you don't have a lot of firepower so I had to cut out a lot of ideas early on cuz I knew I wouldn't be able to do it. But on the other hand I felt like I entered flow state way easier because I didn't have to discuss direction with 10 other people every hour.

I'm definitely envious of the music composing speed and it's really inspiring me to get that down too. I did some rounds of pixel dailies myself and I know that helped me whip up simple art quickly. I did love the tunes in this game, there were a bunch of recognizable motifs but still plenty that were all your own.

Thanks for all the insight, your work motivates me to keep working on my craft!

ddrkirbyisq 2019-10-08 10:34

@peachtreeoath For a better idea of how quickly I work, check out the latest One Hour Compo entry I did as a warmup for LD. As usual, I warmed up for LD by trying to score as much of a soundtrack as I could during a single hour:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SwMFRRJto8

erkberg 2019-10-08 20:02

It's magnificent! The mega man vibes are so incredibly strong, I almost can't believe it :) As with each of your entries, I love love love the soundtrack, it's incredible how much great music you produced in this short timespan. Hearing those tunes just makes me want to set out on a great adventure! The visuals and gameplay are also on point. Jumping and getting 2-3 shots into an enemy felt as nostalgic as it gets. The only minor downside is the kind of standard interpretation of the theme, but since the implementation of it all, including the unlock mechanic, is just so damn good it pretty much doesn't matter. So, overall, I guess this will be one of the best games this LD, although it's only the second one I rated :) PS: The difficulty of the boss fight felt just right to me.

gwinnell 2019-10-08 21:08

The best I've played. Truly smashed it again, @ddrkirbyisq! :tada: How do you make your music (tools/vsts)?

ddrkirbyisq 2019-10-08 21:23

@gwinnell Thanks! I use FL Studio and sequence everything by hand. For this specific soundtrack, most instruments are either 3xOsc, NES VST, or sampled NES noise channel drums (sometimes sliced drum loops). You can see an example process video below of my latest "One Hour Compo" production:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWO4MUaTz7c

dane-tesla 2019-10-08 21:23

I'm impressed you were able to create it in 48hrs x.x A nice idea, a challenging (sometimes) gameplay and pleasing graphics. Good work.

zuhairghias 2019-10-08 22:56

I think there is a bug where you can't start the game. It's just crossed out. Otherwise an amazing entry. Love the Jukebox feature and the music. How much experience do you have with music composition like this?

ddrkirbyisq 2019-10-08 23:06

@zuhairghias You're.......being sarcastic right? (just checking, you never know, I could have uploaded a weird debug build)

I've been doing One Hour Compo for many years so I'm well accustomed to writing music fast :)

bigwhiteshogun 2019-10-08 23:38

You tried to achieve something similar we tried with our jam entry, but you got something amazing. This is incredible amount of polish for the compo. Amount of fun I had with it is hire than in any other comp I played so far.

strega 2019-10-09 05:34

Awesome job on this entry! Very faithful retro vibe and good use of the theme. Awesome that you got a boss fight in! My only gripe was with the jumping. It felt very stiff, but maybe that's what the old megaman games are like. How far are you planning to take it post jam? :D

ddrkirbyisq 2019-10-09 05:53

@strega nothing beats good ol jumping and shooting! :D

I have some small concrete plans for a post-compo version, but I actually quite like how it wraps up at the moment, so it won't be that much more! Thanks for playing

kp-cftsz 2019-10-09 08:26

This game is amazing, very solid work for 48 hrs! You should be proud. A friend of mine found a bug where after dying on spikes the game just went to black. This was on the WebGL build

jezzamon 2019-10-09 08:38

Impressive as always!

sarah 2019-10-09 08:39

Well done (: the unlocking of everything, like the music and options, was really cute! That's a lot of work to get done, so good job on that! It looks and sounds super retro and awesome, I loved it (:

cyriaque 2019-10-09 08:42

I .. i don't know what to say... i's almost perfect, everytime i discover a new great idea i tell myself "wtf , how is that a compo game, how is that possible ?!".

- The ideas are great (especially the auto movements at the beginning, i loved that) - The graphics are greats - The music is great - Everything is great

Best entry so far, it will be hard to beat !

elhombrebanana 2019-10-09 08:43

Finished it, and I'm craving for more. One of the best entries I've seen on a compo so far.

Nothing to complain about, it's just wonderful. You're amazing, congrats!

2019-10-09 08:46

The perfect love letter to mega man and the soundtrack stands up with some of the best from the MM series. The use of the theme was so well done too and the graphics are perfect for this. Well done!

gonzalol 2019-10-09 08:56

I love the concept of a robot who has "lost everything" and have to recover it. Maybe I would like more puzzles to do it and less classic platform routine. Either way, it's a great job.

joellikespigs 2019-10-09 08:58

Absolutely stunning! My game has a similar game style with starting with nothing and slowly unlocking other controls right down to the use of conveyor belts to move the character haha. However yours blows mine out of the water incredible work and you made all the music too. AH Thats genuinely amazing, For sure this one will do incredibly well. Nice work!

tmpxyz 2019-10-09 09:15

A very solid megaman platformer, amazing to finish it in a compo.

aret24 2019-10-09 09:22

I played your game, and only thing I can say is 6/5, this is the best game I ever played on Ludum Dare, Graphics are nice, music is cool, but Boss was too hard (I just needed to hold Z and Avoid these blades)

shunaky 2019-10-09 09:23

LOVED EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS GAME!!!

And by the way... Am I crazy or I heard the Dragon ball song in the middle of your music? "CHA-LA HEAD CHA-LA"

2019-10-09 09:29

Dude!

coffeedrinkers 2019-10-09 09:30

Great game! I adore everything about it! The one thing in my mind after the game was "MORE! MORE! MORE!"... please do it!

ruud-cremers 2019-10-09 09:53

Amazing work, especially for the compo. A lot of content, and very polished. Best game I've played so far, and by a fellow Godot user <3

zuf 2019-10-09 10:04

I love the music, art and mood in this game. 5/5

selkkie 2019-10-09 11:22

That was fantastic! And a compo game, too, holy mackerel! Soundtrack was jamming, gameplay was perfect, it felt very megaman. The gameplay was a perfect level of challenge to keep me engaged without being frustrated. I appreciated the reset function as well.

I hit a bug in the WebGL version where I got a black screen somewhere during the final stage and couldn't progress, but I downloaded the MacOS version and played it through again just fine.

Awesome work!

zanzavar 2019-10-09 12:06

What an awesome submission! Great work! Really amazed at how fast you made those groovy songs :)

p-r 2019-10-09 12:41

Nice, very polished, kept me hooked

owc 2019-10-09 12:54

Looks awesome but you should make less text. Anyway good entry, congrats :)

zuhairghias 2019-10-09 13:39

@ddrkirbyisq Yes I was joking, XDDDD

pranjalbisht 2019-10-09 14:19

Ahhh, amazing Megaman tribute! That boss fight was hard as nails! To be continued?! Only complaint I have is that the theme felt a bit tacked on, especially the gimmicks in the menu, but overall, an awesome compo entry!

derek-volker 2019-10-09 16:42

That was a really amazing entry. Incredible graphics, soundtrack and mechanics. All feels nice, the controls respond well, the graphics are consistent with soundtrack and the game thematic. Also, it really nails the jam theme. Im impressed that you could do all this by yourself in the merciless compo timeframe. Absolutely outstanding job!

Also, somehow i managed to clear it!

Sem título.png

2019-10-09 16:49

Very neat game! I like, that first unlocks doesn't feel like gimmicks, but present their own gameplay stages.

paulo-brunassi 2019-10-09 17:05

MAN, this is amazing! Played the entire game, and I'm very impressed by your work. Congratulations!

leonard-graf 2019-10-09 18:00

Wow, it feels like a complete game. Awesome music and art style and the level design is pretty on point too. Congratulations on such an outstanding job!

2019-10-09 18:11

Godot

lereveur 2019-10-09 18:20

A solid candidate for the winner prize! Unfortunatly, I'm not very good at plateformers, and the boss is really too hard to defeat, so I did not unlock the lasts things. The concept somewhat reminded me Evoland, the winner of LD#24 Evolution - all I can wish for you is to follow his destiny  Very well done!

smbe19 2019-10-09 20:14

Very nice game. I was so happy when I unlocked the background music ;). However, the boss was way too hard, I gave up.

crazyrems 2019-10-09 20:34

Even if I never played any Megaman, I felt kinda nostalgic. This is perfectly done, the graphics, the music, story and pace, everything looks mastered. I love the fact that you took time to measure how long it took to you to make the musics, my favorite being Searching for Answers ❤. I'm definitely looking for your future work! Keep the awesome games!

elmos-minion 2019-10-10 00:37

OMFG I am a huge diehard Mega Man and Mega Man X fan and this is amazing

please continue development post-LD

elmos-minion 2019-10-10 01:48

Also, for all those who found not-Metal Man hard, you guys have got to play some more Mega Man, c'mon :P

The polish on the game is incredible

wubbaduck 2019-10-10 03:32

This was very well done! I played it through a few times just to take notes for my future games.

tori 2019-10-10 09:44

Very solid entry, i love the graphism and music, amazing main character ! Boss was too hard for me, i'm not a fan of megaman game but i had fun, the amount of work your did is impressive, great job !

hcursino 2019-10-10 10:08

A more forgiving megaman game, where you play as Yae and progress like in Evoland. What can I say other than I LOVE EVERYTHING about this game. Amazing work!! Keep an eye though, my game crashed after I died a few times and I had to start all over again, which was fine the game is awesome. You did all of this in 48 hours?? Maaan, I feel like I am super slow now  Amazing work, friend. AMAZING work!

purrseus 2019-10-10 12:45

Gamedev god, indeed! Nothing more to add.

Thank you for implementing the super informative jukebox! 'Face your destiny' is actually playing on repeat right now :notes:

mateusboga 2019-10-11 00:12

This is so good but so hard! I couldn't make it past level 3, just like old-school NES games ;D I can't believe you did all this in just 48 hours that is insane!

mika-la-grand 2019-10-11 17:33

The difficulty ramps up very quickly in stage 2 and 3; luckily there are plenty of checkpoints. In stage 3 there is a part with two spinning gears, a cannon and a backwards conveyor belt; which is waaay too difficult. The boss fight is also very hard. Though, I did eventually manage to beat the game and unlock the credits. Is says "to be continued", so are you gonna keep working on the game?

alexrose 2019-10-12 00:44

The game isn't too difficult at all, it's great. This is my pick for the compo win.

kaeveris 2019-10-12 12:06

I don't know how you managed to do all that in 48 hours, but it's so amazing! Great Mega Man vibes, amazing music, incredible art! I love how you unlock everything, even the menus and moving right, then left, etc. I kinda feel it was a bit too similar to Mega Man, especially with the boss

robowarrior1982 2019-10-12 14:47

Very good megaman like ! And i like the idea you gain new capacity on the way ! But there is too much use or asset remind me celeste and megaman for example.....So that's a wondefull homage !

frenchie 2019-10-13 00:33

I was expecting to see a lot of games with the "start with nothing" theme but this is the first I've played to take it as far as unlocking the menu itself! Incredible entry all around - audio, graphics, gameplay... you even threw in some narrative! I had a lot of fun looking through your notes in the jukebox and credits as well. Awesome, awesome job!

paulhocker 2019-10-13 05:12

best game -- nice job with godot -- awesome game

dimesto52 2019-10-13 15:00

I see only 2 feedback when touching the enemy is not asser marked and the font used is complicated to read on certain letter the game is very good. I spent an exelent moment

yazara 2019-10-13 16:30

Nice platformer, pretty difficult though! Especially the cannons that follow your movement and the boss battle are really tough. I really like the graphics and sound design :) Great job for a compo entry! The "unlocking" doesn't really feel like unlocking though, more like normal progression in a platformer game.

noobdev 2019-10-13 17:58

......................I dont know what to say... I mean its toooo good!! Starting from game play to graphics to music everything is perfect and well matched. The music and sound effects are just mind blowing-ly good. Use of the Theme is just amazing, as you literally start with nothing.... Not even a menu  , now that is a new level of "start with Nothing". Nice work and Good Luck with your awesome game .

2019-10-13 21:03

Nice! Great concept & use of the theme, great art style, and your music is awesome as always. Platforming & general gameplay felt good, though there were some times where there were jumps that seemed possible but just barely weren't which was a little annoying. Also turrets were a bit too smart & took a lot of hits to kill which was frustrating - the lack of visual feedback when shooting them made me think they couldn't be killed at first. Also it wasn't clear that the pits in level 2 & 3 would actually kill you, after in level 1 they were just screen transitions. The boss was nicely challenging, good balance there. It was super fun to play through overall, I really enjoyed the experience. Great work!

arzi 2019-10-13 22:51

You really nailed down the Megaman feel in every aspects! Definitely one of the best games in this LD!

jacklehamster 2019-10-13 22:59

Playing this game was pure joy... well maybe more pain, but after beating the final boss it felt pretty good . The quality of this game is very high, great graphics, great control, nice music, good pacing and neat concept.

Now here's a few points of improvement. - The game looks a bit too similar to Megaman. - The gameplay isn't all that groundbreaking, even the idea of unlocking abilities. - It's pretty pretty linear.

Other than that, good work. I'll share a Let's play video soon of this game.

mharring 2019-10-14 02:08

Well done! This felt very much like Megaman, in the best way. I found the controls a little difficult to use personally (I would have preferred to use "space" for jump), and the final boss was pretty difficult (you didn't have much time to react to the attacks). Regardless, I enjoyed this one. Great job!

ddrkirbyisq 2019-10-14 02:52

@mharring: Thanks for the feedback! With space for jump, what would your preferred key binding for "shoot" be?

ahistyap 2019-10-14 03:27

I just refuse to believe this is done by one person in two days! This is so complete and rich of content! And really fun too, remind me of the good old times playing Mega man 2! I really had a blast playing this game. Definitely 10/10. Awesome work!

deepnight 2019-10-14 08:19

Excellent work on this game :) Reminds me a lot of Evoland, but that's still a good take on the theme! I'm amazed by how much you managed to do in a single weekend: controls are good, art is nice, sound design is excellent, and you have tons of level design to make it a full fledged game! Good job!

mharring 2019-10-14 12:11

@ddrkirbyisq I would have liked something on the right side of the keyboard for shoot, i.e. "/", but that's just my personal preference

ddrkirbyisq 2019-10-14 16:21

@deepnight: Thanks! That's high praise coming from a veteran such as yourself :)

deepnight 2019-10-14 19:30

@ddrkirbyisq My pleasure! It's one of the best entry I've played so far :)

2019-10-15 00:51

Awesome! Can't believe that this can be done in 48 hours, respect! Love the music and the visual style. My only complaint that you have to press W to fire and Shift to jump - it really should be the other way around

sean-s-leblanc 2019-10-15 01:08

nice entry! certainly not the only "unlock basic gameplay features" take on the theme, but i dig the GB megaman style of this one

aeveis 2019-10-15 05:59

I beat it! I was really bad at surviving, but luckily the restart was at whatever screen I was at. The art and music are great, and the unlocking system worked well with the story. Nice job!

space-wumpus 2019-10-15 18:13

Got to the end! Great game, really impressive for 48 hour solo effort, well done!

jiri-hysek 2019-10-15 21:04

Oh! This one was the first game of LD45 I played but now I see I haven't rated it yet! I even expected this game before the LD started because I read your posts about switching Unity for Godot this time. As I'm also Godot user I was looking forward your game and you haven't dissapointed me :) Quite opposite, the game is awesome, I like a gameboy style and how it (controls/movement) feels... audio is also very fitting... another great entry from you!

rebtf 2019-10-16 00:33

I was impressed by the organic tutorial. It very much lent itself to teaching you each mechanic (and button) very cleanly.

Obviously amazing music and strong, stylistic visuals. Great job!

foodzilla 2019-10-16 05:05

I really like how this game went. It was fun and cool, and shockingly impressive to get this done on your own. I can barely get the debugging of the basic mechanics done before the end of a Jam, let alone a Compo. Let alone level design and content. Great job!

humphreysmedia 2019-10-16 13:12

Art and audio are super themeatic with each other, very aesthetically pleasing! Great job with connecting it with the theme of the jam too, can see this game getting big! Only critisism is maybe to change the font as "m" in a word looks like an "n" and it can be a little hard to read sometimes. Overall great game, super juicy and fun narrative!

boyturnedrobot 2019-10-16 13:20

I loved this game. I'm a big fan of Mega Man, specifically nes era, and it's music. This game really felt like a mega man game in it's movements and shooting (minus auto shoot of course) and the music was a great homage to the original nes era music. Fantastic job!

tricky-fat-cat 2019-10-16 16:29

Pretty funny game with nice realisation. Well done!

jam373 2019-10-16 19:33

Really great entry. It's pretty fantastic how you actually managed to significantly improve the best boss fight from mega man 2. Heck of a lot off fun!

2019-10-16 21:13

MegaWoman! It was funny! Boss killed me a lot. We shoot each other at the End! But, seems he killed me first. Good music, nice art, smooth gameplay. Well Done.

game progression on pointttt

2019-10-17 06:51

Amazing Megaman tribute! Couldn't beat the last boss but had fun playing nonetheless.

kuro 2019-10-18 07:34

Well, the others said it all. The game's awesome, progression is great, difficulty curve perfect for a compo game.

The final boss is just spot on difficult. Took me three attempts to find a strategy and win. Audio - awesome, visuals - awesome. I'm rooting for you.

And now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to play "Inflate me to the moon" again. (still got it on my phone)

ohsqueezy 2019-10-19 02:23

I appreciate when a game takes the player the meat of its components quickly and this game does precisely that with regards especially to the cannon enemies plus the music absolutely slays

dob 2019-10-19 21:17

Very impressive for a Compo game. All of it works well and is very polished, and it has lots of extras. The unlocking theme is satisfying and works well. I didn't have much trouble with the boss, but maybe the early comments were before you made him a little easier in 1.03. I really like the color palette and art style. Very neat. I also 1000% appreciate restarting at the same level where I died - I can't play games where I have to go really far back to a checkpoint - I'm too old, and it's too frustrating. I loved the jukebox feature too - fun to see your notes about the music.

elemental-zeal-game-studios 2019-10-21 01:17

The best use of the theme I've seen yet in the competition. Good audio, sound, and gameplay really tie it together too. Great job on this entry. :)

karlipoppins 2019-10-21 05:27

It just blows my mind what you were able to accomplish in 48h. The music is just astounding by itself, the theme is addressed with perfection, the gameplay is super fun and smooth. Love the graphics, awesome tribute to megaman. Perfect entry, awesome job!

krammetje 2019-10-21 13:59

Amazing game! Nice style, great audio, fun way of using the theme. Only the boss felt unbeatable.

solah 2019-10-21 19:44

Very good game. Might be a bit too close to Megaman but I really love the music and how you played with the theme. Well done!

room606 2019-10-21 20:16

Very cool level and puzzles design, I should make some educational notes in my notebook, he-he. Each new feature acts in its place. Very cool. Nice theme implementation, probably one of the games most closest to Jam Theme.

acronaut 2019-10-21 20:36

This is quite textbook way on onboarding the player into playing the game based on this event's theme. Explicit Prompts, Careful progressive unlocking of features and design constraints of attainable controls ('Subroutines'). I was hoping there were further unlocks after beating boss (based on its cliff-hanger narrative.) Quite a hefty boss fight, It's possible to beat the boss without attaining further upgrades (rapid, full-auto fire); I Was thinking if there were possible easter-egg to reach for the boss without attaining a buster cannon.

The game compelled me to give another play-through. My only gripe was the overall-width hitbox collision of Libra's Hair (one particular case was the introduction of timing to go past the 1st collapsible-spikes while running against a conveyor-belt).

Looking forward towards for an expansion of additional chapters, and perhaps more options down the line?: - more palettes! - achievements? (e.g. pacifist/'Asimov'-run?, no-hit, 1-hp, alternative endings based on particular order of acquired subroutines or hidden sub-routines from particular adversaries) - remix or alternative-themes based from collectible subroutines or branch-able chain of events.

Nice touch on seeing you've added your notes on your chiptune soundtrack from the jukebox.

Kudos for forgiving same-screen respawns.

Solid! :dizzy:

philomory 2019-10-22 07:23

The "unlock basic elements of of a normal game" schtick has, of course, been done before, but regardless you've executed it beautifully. Even the least impressive elements of the game are "merely good", which is to say, nothing here is bad or even middling; some things, like the music, are actively excellent. Honestly, until I saw the credits I tacitly assumed it was a Jam entry from a team of at least three people with 72 hours of work - and had that been true, I'd _still_ have been impressed.

I'm sitting here listening to the music while I write this, which isn't something I've done with any other LD game, I don't think, not even the one other game I rated 5 stars on Audio. The gameplay is good, too :stuck_out_tongue:

If I had _one_ tiny complaint, it's that you missed a golden opportunity with the "you unlocked x" jokes. You pick up a key and it says, "You unlocked: The Key to the Gate!". And then when you actually go down and _open_ the gate it doesn't say anything at all, and you know in your heart really _should_ have said, "You've unlocked: the gate!" :broken_heart:

Oh man and this is compo? Probably best entry I've seen so far, unfortunately even after couple of tries I couldnt defeat the boss, but I know its purely my fault, I just couldnt keep up shooting him while dodjing his attacks. Everything in this game is pretty good. On the theme side its executed very well, and funny enough even though my game is horror and is different from yours, the concept is very similar, you unlock UI, time and things like that. I enjoyed it to my best, thank you for this entry!

neowhoru 2019-10-23 11:20

Wow one of the greatest games i played in LD45. Reminds me of a Combination of mega man series and Evoland (which was also Made on a Ludum Dare). Cannot believe that you Made this in compo.

Great work - love it.

mad-brokli 2019-10-23 11:31

DAAM such a polished game for a compo entry. The audio complements the game very well and love the pixel art. The level design was great. Saw a couple of entires where you unlock the world bit by bit, but this was executed very well. Loved the game!

catusfelony 2019-10-23 11:33

This really is one of those entries that make you go "I don't believe this was made in 48 hours."

Really great, amazing job. I don't do well with Megaman-esque games, so I couldn't get too far but this is still clearly one of the best entries for LD45 I've played yet.

This is an amazing entry.

Mega Man was a HUGE part of my childhood, and I've played the original NES-series through multiple times. So it's needless to say that my nostalgia-factor here is 5000%

But beyond that, you're clearly a master at your craft, and there's not much I can find in your entry to complain about. The fact that you've produced something like this in 48 hours is astonishing.

----

I'm VERY familiar with the original Megaman-series, so I can say that you've captured the "Blue Bomber's" spirit uncannily. And while I say this as a compliment, it comes with a tiny tidbit of criticism.

It's evident that your game is a pastiche of sorts (a love letter ♥), and you've gone to great lenghts of being faithful to the source-material you derive from. And one could say that perhaps a little too faithful.

Since the core-mechanics, music, graphics (and, well... everything) borrow heavily from MM, I was kind of hoping that there would've been more elements setting the game aside as "your own". The story ends at a cliffhanger (so I might be proven wrong later!), but so far it strongly suggests that it's also set in the same universe as MM.

While being a sweet thought and a reference, I was somewhat dissapointed that you chose to replicate the design of good old Metal-Man level (and it's theme), and make the player face him as the final boss. I guess a part of me was hoping for some original robot-master/a whole new entity to face off, so the ending left me with conflicting emotions.

---

But putting that aside, this is still amazing work, and I hope to see more stuff from you in the future.

I'll have to join @acronaut here with his request for an expanded edition with extra-palettes and what-nots. It would be awesome!

alphish 2019-10-23 16:50

The general game setup would fit the "Upgrades" theme a lot, but it works here as well. I appreciate the unparalleled dedication to the "unlocking" take on "Start with nothing". I mean, that's the first game I stumbled across this Jam, where moving left and right are unlocked separately, and there is actually some challenge provided for just moving right part. Also, it got to the point of audio and stages and ending unlocking, and it's just so silly it has its own charm.

The gameplay itself isn't particularly innovative, though with it the game being specifically Megaman-inspired, I don't think innovation was the main focus here, anyway. Aside from that, it works pretty well; I didn't notice any jarring problems. I appreciate that the top of the Libra's head is excluded from the hitbox, so I could stand still one tile below a cannon without being affected by its forward attack. I like when a game has this kind of precision to it. The boss battle took me a few tries, but then I figured out that charging right at the boss with maybe some little dodges (or just taking the hit) worked well enough to win.

The story... well, there seem to be some questions asked, but no answers given, which is pretty dissatisfying. There better be some continuation to it; I hope this cliffhanger isn't just another of Megaman references.

The game has well-made pixel-art graphics, but we all know that DDRKibry's games are played mostly for their soundtrack (aren't they?). The game delivers; I guess my biggest complaint would be that I'd have the tracks to be longer, but I can see why it wouldn't happen within the tight Compo timeframe. I think my favourite track in terms of mood is Level 1, despite being pretty short (maybe that's why I'd like to have a bit more done with this theme).

Overall, a solid and neat platformer, though the conclusion (or rather lack thereof) is still pretty disappointing. ^^'

tweedle 2019-10-23 22:18

great story and unlocking mechanics! well done

mykola 2019-10-24 06:00

Awesome game, my favorite entry so far! Music is amazing, thank you so much for sharing your creative process in the jukebox, very interesting and inspiring.

scaelin 2019-10-24 09:00

Fantastic game, great work!

ryjcio 2019-10-24 10:58

Nice megamanish entry. ;)

prodigalson 2019-10-24 14:13

That was really fun! I don't care how closely it resembles mega man because the way in which it was presented it feels like a game all on its own. I love that you literally mean "unlock everything" and it does not get old in fact it took me by surprise how many things were missing until I unlocked them so nicely done. Music, sound effects, aesthetics, fxs, and overall presentation was nostalgic and wonderfully done. I had a ton of fun but I have to come back later to defeat the boss...the controls are a bit hard for me but if you ever add controller support then I can start speed running it ;) Really great work. 5 stars!

ddrkirbyisq 2019-10-24 17:23

@prodigalson: Controller support is already included :)

darefus 2019-10-24 20:53

damn, nice job wit dis

hwaet 2019-10-25 01:27

What a great entry! I was laughing immediately. Clever, and polished, and fun to boot! Really well done :)

brokenmirrormedia 2019-10-25 04:39

Wow this is absolutely amazing, and even better is your engagement with the community here. Reading through your comments has been really informative, and gives great insight into how much work and talent went into this game. I don't really have too much I can add that hasn't already been said, but I am absolutely blown away, fantastic work. Also, unrelated, but I played Ripple Runner that you mentioned in a comment earlier and I can absolutely see how it got second place, that game is also amazing, and your music is top notch!

prodigalson 2019-10-25 12:48

@ddrkirbyisq as in "game pad"? Then its on!

ddrkirbyisq 2019-10-25 18:30

@prodigalson: Yep should work -- let me know if you have any issues!

ddrkirbyisq 2019-10-25 19:12

If you're looking for a real challenge, **try doing a "Challenge Run" skipping all health and buster upgrades**:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOKBzgJpw58

One hit from anything kills you, and you have a reduced rate of fire!

johnnysix 2019-10-25 20:39

I'm amazed this is a compo game, did you sleep at all! :scream:

Top marks for Music , Theme and Overall!

Glad you had up for jump too - Shift glitches out on windows -

ld45_db-077-a.jpg

I made it to then end ! Great music, nice to see the breakdown of the tracks, and what feeling was going for in each one. AGain, I dunno how you crammed this all into a 48h Compo!

ld45_db-077-b.jpg

madbarron 2019-10-25 23:36

Great game! I'm terrible at platformers, but I finally beat the boss! The music and sound effects are probably my favorite part.

hitchh1k3r 2019-10-26 15:02

Cool idea, this was a lot of fun. The graphics and narrative reminded me a bit of Cave Story, but it was clearly way more inspired by Megaman.

I liked the graphics (and music of course). I liked that the player respawns at the start of each screen, so the game wasn't too hard.

The enemies could have used some feedback when taking damage, and some of the jumps were pretty tricky.

Comment to be continued.... (when the game is ^_^)

glaciereclipse 2019-10-27 06:27

Wow this is such a polished entry well done! (This is compo?!) Enjoyed everything about it, Also kudos for not restarting the whole boss dialog and just letting me fight him after my first encounter. Fantastic game!

6smith 2019-10-28 03:23

incredible experience! super amazing

joe40001 2019-10-29 20:45

What you were able to achieve here is INSANE, I don't know where the compo ends and where the rest of the stuff begins because I can't imagine 1 person could make anywhere close this entire thing in 2 days, it's crazy.

2020-04-03 19:02

It was kind of annoying and slow, but the music is really nice, and I figured out that you can spam space and z while focusing on dodging in order to beat the final boss. Really nice for a one-man team.
