I really like the look, and was fun to play around with. It's a little hard to control, and super easy to run into other planes. I'd love to have a health mechanic rather than just dying after one mistake.

@stanov, thanks for stopping by my stream. This is a pretty neat game, I particularly liked the ant trail movement and the ants gathering around the items you were carrying back. It's a really neat idea and you put together a solid game with great & appropriate music and sfx. Nice job

Nice looking game, good atmosphere, was smooth and fun to play, but just a little hard to see. I'll echo other comments that the gameplay is pretty basic, but great job. Also, security is important, even for leaderboards :P

Pretty solid game! I most like that the storms seem to target you heavily as the toxicity goes up, and the black clouds over dense factories impeding your vision, while frustrating, I think are actually a good design element. Lots of really small quality of life improvements could be made, most importantly I think: Magnetic attraction for money within a range, and better indication of how toxic a factory is (is there any point to building the more expensive ones?)

Really nice idea; I very much enjoyed the puzzles though they did get a bit repetitive, mainly due to the controls being a little confusing and having rough edges (accidentally dropping an item -> have to move to pick it up again, also the movement controls are a bit floaty leading to imprecise placement). The core gameplay concept is great though, this could drive a full game easily :) Great work.

Planetary Remains by Imphenzia 2017-05-10T11:55:06Z

The core mechanic is great, very difficult to master. This is a kind of skill game that I suspect you could grind at and improve in for a very long time. The randomness may actually be a detriment to that, it might be nice to have a mode where you get exactly the same pattern so you could better compare skill between players and optimize strategies for a specific run. The physics-based graphics work great for this game and it's quite pleasing to look at. I'm a little surprised the menu music didn't carry over into the game though.

Nice start, definitely needs more gameplay. The ideas remind me of some older console games whose names I forget :) The level is definitely graphically complex, and you may have spent too much time on graphics, it's an easy trap to fall into. Side note is I instinctively clicked on the wall to try to move to that point, and that doesn't seem to work.

Get In The Robot by RetroSpecter 2017-05-10T12:26:39Z

@RetroSpecter, I have a crash report if you want it, didn't have a hard lock, just an application crash. I was able to make it to the last robot without issues on the second try though. It's a neat idea and a great start for some kind of goal-focused gameplay. I very much like the objects flipping all over the place when they're run over, and the graphics are quite good.

PlanetDefense by Sri Harsha Chilakapati 2017-05-06T08:58:15Z

My first play through I just happened to be unlucky to pick 3 asteroids which did almost nothing to mitigate the enemies :)

Starting a second game, it didn't seem to reset the difficulty, but I managed to find the two asteroids that win the game (top two). I also ran into the slowdown later in the game, and some usability issues because of the alert boxes to confirm upgrades (In chrome).

Overall good work, There are a lot of great suggestions and observations in this thread already, I'll add mine: I'd like to be able to rotate the turrets manually, and to see the path that the enemies take before the wave starts - or for the path to be more random.

Really nice work, rather well polished for such a quick project. Solid controls and graphics and a lot of nice little touches (platform tilting is especially good) I found it too easy to fall off when frantically jumping around to knock the slimes off (best score was just ascending and waiting for the levels to weigh down)

[Web] Rob Fisher by Razenpok 2017-05-03T09:37:59Z

Nice concept and atmosphere. Equal parts fun and frustrating to play, The continue system is very welcome and I don't think I would have finished it otherwise. The pieces often don't stack the way I expect and slide off, and after continuing sometimes you must use the first piece that comes by in order to not drown. Also some times Mr. Fisher would fail to leap on top of apparently solidly affixed blocks and drown. So, minor technical glitches, but it is a really nice looking game and novel gameplay concept. The control scheme is simple, and that's good in this application; I'd like more control, but I don't want more complexity in the controls, so I think this is the right balance. (I'll continue to call it by its one true name: Evil tetris)

Gardzen by LucasMolina 2017-05-12T07:01:27Z

Was a lot of fun to play with and very relaxing ambient sounds. I figured out most of the mechanics before I noticed/understood the rule editor; generating random rule sets is neat but sometimes leads to infinite chasing patterns and sound overload :) I would love to see this kind of mechanic joined with more complex gameplay though I'm not quite sure what that would look like just yet.

Very cool - I enjoyed playing this, and the level design, graphics, sound design are all quite good, impressive. The grabbing mechanic is a bit awkward but that's reasonable I think. Handles on everything are a great visual cue for interactability. Movement is a little slow for my taste.

Wow, just wow. Really well done graphics, sound, environment - incredibly funny. Gameplay needs some work though imo, collision exists where it seems like it shouldn't - making it hard to get around, and the other people's movement feels really random and unfair. Writing is just over the top, very nicely done.

Very interesting indeed. Neat ideas in this entry, but needs some more balance for sure - it ultimately became frustrating to deal with the ever recurring pollution, the repetitive music did not help with the feeling of frustration :). I guess people like farms the most? But I could never get my overall happiness stat up that high. I feel it could become a pretty interesting game with some more polish and some "shielding" mechanics for pollution.

(Re: Game Jam version; I haven't followed up on the post-jam version yet)

Really shiny graphics, this game looks great - Unfortunately I didn't realize that until well after the first run because the UI is so initially complex and overwhelming. Background audio is pretty great but the move command SFX quickly gets pretty grating. I really dislike the abrupt stop when reaching the end of a move command, and that enemies spawn literally on top of you. The weapon/defense variety is welcome and overall this seems like a pretty solid game that just needs some serious user interaction polish/refinement.

Nice gameplay mechanic, the one button input + gravity around the planet is a neat idea. Just have to establish a nice orbit and hope nothing randomly spawns to collide with you. A bit more predictability in the incoming asteroids would be nice, maybe something like an indicator on the edge of the screen a few seconds before the asteroid starts to come in, so you have a chance to respond to things.

just wow, playing this game was actually seriously exciting - after a while the asteroid chains come in so unexpectedly and rapidly it's unfair but it's still more just exciting than punishing. I think that is probably a result of the sound effects and weight as many other people have noted. Anyway great work, this is among the more fun games I've played this LD :)

I'm not a big card game player, but I spent some time to understand the systems in play here and was able to pretty quickly understand the tradeoffs, and go on to win a medium game pretty comfortably. There is one thing I didn't quickly understand - the bottom blue plus-ish shape... That seems to be a limitation on the number of blue cards you can play per turn, and the tutorial didn't really mention this except in passing that there was a limit - this led to some unexpected behavior (which I initially thought was bugs).

Overall, great work, pretty solid game, looks really nice. Would have loved to see a bit more graphical representation of the magnitude of the threat, rather than just a number in the top corner :)

Really cool to see a terminal game in LD! I eventually made it look somewhat correct using UTF-8 mode in PUTTY, but maybe that wasn't quite right either, It mostly worked. My experience on Windows 10 is that 32bit version doesn't run at all (crashes every time), but 64-bit launches without crashing for me about 1 in 5 times. Alt-tabbing out has a good chance of stopping mouse input from working. Pretty touchy. I managed to get to the candle and to the next platform but then alt-tabbed out. I like the way this game looks, but it's really hard to navigate. One big issue was jumping on the teapots was difficult to do reliably because the character would wildly overshoot.

Noting for reference that my system is an i7 with Nvidia 780Ti gpu, as these platform issues might be related to gpu type.

Id's Journey by red-fan-games 2017-05-05T01:53:37Z

@red-fan-games - I think I've found the bug that's causing crashes on the windows version. (from debugging the crash)

The problem is that 'input' in Scene is uninitialized, and the existing value on the heap is non-null. On the first frame input is not set to physics-input, and therefore it may be an arbitrary value, and accessing the structure at the bad pointer may crash the game. But not always.

Id's Journey by red-fan-games 2017-05-05T03:22:42Z

@red-fan-games No problem; debugging issues like these to understand the problem is something I find enjoyable :) I'm glad to help

I've launched the game 5 times, no crashes now - it was almost every time before, that seems to have done the trick. Thanks for the tip on the mouse sensitivity

Food Fight by Scornz 2017-05-10T11:34:22Z

Really nice work, the gameplay feels good and the character/enemy animations are smooth and feel polished. Leaderboard is a nice touch. The core gameplay loop is pretty entertaining for a while, though I'll repeat others complaints about the placement of the falling items being terribly hard to predict. I'd like to see something like a transparent red area highlighting what's going to kill you. I got stuck on the edge of the table a few times, a clearer transition for falling off would be welcome.

My Little Forest by lastnerd 2017-05-16T09:25:55Z

By some mysterious force, the mere presence of barrels that fell from the sky leads to spontaneous combustion of trees in the vicinity :) It's too easy to survive indefinitely by just carefully guarding a small group of trees, but there are some neat ideas here. Lots of directions to take this gameplay; speed upgrades? Fire retardant materials to spray on the trees? automated helpers? Some kind of objective? Still, cool game.

Terrible repeating sound bug if you die with score 0 :) Was fun once I got the hang of it. On mouse/keyboard, it was difficult to juggle mouse / movement / powerups, probably with some practice it'd be more intuitive. Auto-powerups, or pickups for powerup might be a neat solution.

I like the truncated train, it's a great setting. But it's very difficult. I'm still not quite sure what the "1" in the bottom corner is. After playing a dozen times, I finally found around the right timing / inputs to actually kill the enemies and recover from the enemy stun. I'm not great at this kind of game and didn't really make it that far. My observation is that the attack rectangles for everything are just huge - your attack is really short, but if you hit it at the right time your attack precludes the enemy attacks.

I managed to collect all the artifacts, fortunately the trading system is very forgiving. It didn't take very long to figure out how the systems worked and balance the local economies - then it was just a matter of finding the other cities on the map and realizing that the goal was the artifacts. IMO the music was a bad idea in this form, but SFX are pretty appropriate. Simple game, but nicely done.

I'm really impressed with the detail put into the animation and the intro sequence. I was unable to determine if there was more than one outcome though, I suspect not. This seems like a really fuzzy puzzle game - I'm not sure if there are actually intended solutions, only a few of the levels feel like solutions were designed into the puzzles. Still, mostly entertaining to solve the problems, except where it's particularly troublesome. I really like the continuity where the ending planet for one level is the starting planet for the next, and the visuals and story ideas are pretty entertaining as well. High score of 710; I'm not entirely sure which planet needs focus so that is mostly luck and a lot of clicking :) I do really like your graphics and music though. It might be neat to add more planets over time as a way of ramping the difficulty.. Beyond that I'd just love to see some obvious animation indicating when planets are growing / need attention.

+1 on this game has a hotline miami vibe; I had a lot of fun playing around with even though it seems to be really buggy. I don't have much to critique, the level looks pretty nice, controls worked exactly as I expected, just shooting enemies never quite seemed to work right :)

Nice ideas, gameplay wasn't obvious/intuitive, but once I reread the description it made more sense. I like the planet preview, nice touch. I also love the enormous asteroids after a while, it feels really great to play with that kind of scale, though then you get stuck with the spectacle creep if you want the game to go further. Would be neat to see how this plays with the jetpack mechanic developed further.

Nice work - I very much like the scaling up of your weapon capabilities with powerups, and that the game isn't too hard, but still requires a lot of skill. The warning tiles disappearing without fanfare was a missed opportunity though :) Overall really good job.

Charming; there aren't many other words for this kind of thing :) Took me a little while to figure out how to play, and I take serious issue with gameplay having you click exactly in the area that gets the "proceeed" button when the game sequence is over. Great work though - it's got a very nice aesthetic to it, though the game length is maybe a bit on the short side.

Thirst by NatalyCreates 2017-05-03T09:27:18Z

This is a pretty neat perspective to use for a platformer, I also really like the random quotes at the start (especially "You have reached the end of your free trial membership...") My main complaint is that the jump is really floaty and a bit difficult to control. The music mostly works, but there are some issues and clicking/popping which isn't pleasant. It's not a very complex game but wouldn't be hard to expand to make a solid puzzle platformer.

Survival on Smol Island by MiltonNH25 2017-05-10T11:26:23Z

This is a remarkably complex game given the time requirements, and while it's a little rough, I can see a pretty clear and complete vision for a game implemented here, nice work. Because the AI cheats (I'm pretty sure, it seems to have unlimited ammo) it's really tough to get very far, probably constraining enemy ammo would make this more beatable/enjoyable.

Hm, there are some good ideas here. The controls are pretty rough though, it's difficult to predict how my input is going to affect the orbit. IMO this could be pretty fun if it moved a bit faster (could increase the size of your planet faster), and maybe had multiple stages (progressing to eating solar systems, etc). Overall nice work

Quite enjoyable - I have to say getting two asteroids to collide for the first time was a great feeling, the aiming mechanism hinted nicely that it would be possible. I think as the speed goes up the game becomes unplayable due to lack of control, and that would be something interesting to try to solve. But even so playing through it was a great experience.

Some very clever puzzles with the wrapping mechanic - Though movement was a bit difficult (especially that early puzzle with the falling floors and jumping into a one-high gap). As has been said, great music/sound - and remarkably polished entry, very nice.

I'm not quite sure what's going on with this game, it looks pretty intriguing though a bit more description would be nice. Not sure if it was just my experience, but I can't really read the text in the top corner, and I haven't found any way to interact with the environment meaningfully.

Inside the Blockhead by Photon 2017-05-18T09:41:02Z

I managed to beat it; really nice and original game. Level design was quite good, it does a good job of getting you familiar with the level by forcing you to make small logical leaps about how the system works - very good work with that. I encountered some issues with jumping on top of a colored tile block, but otherwise worked great.

Hi MeronSoda, thanks for visiting the stream, I did eventually get around to playing your game at https://www.twitch.tv/videos/143780402 - time 1:23:05 (Just now catching up on posting ratings and comments)

I found the platforming to be pretty challenging and the yellow enemies are pretty tricky to mitigate - though I'm not exactly a platforming expert by any means. The controls are pretty solid and precise but I feel the levels may over-rely on the double-jump, and as the up button this got pretty tiring, I ended up using one hand on the arrow keys and the other hand controlling the jump button and that felt more natural. The music feels a bit out of place (in the first level, anyway)

SCATTER by Dr. Argus 2017-05-15T23:29:34Z

I got the general idea of this game pretty quickly, but the UI does a very poor job of communicating what's going on. I'd like to see a color/texture change based on the current population. I never would have guessed that the other planets would have tiny population limits. Background music is quite nice, but the transfer sound effect gets repetitive pretty quickly. If you want to make the gameplay more frantic, you may need to limit how quickly people can be moved around in the early game, where as long as you're willing to click a lot you can basically keep the home planet subdued almost indefinitely (it seems)

Little Pluto by BrickwallsGames 2017-05-03T09:58:07Z

Neat idea - needs polish but I like the physics ideas in a sort of bullet hell collision avoidance game. Random generation is great for keeping things interesting, I think some of the random patterns are practically impassible though. After many attempts, I've made it to the super-shooty-rectangle at what might have been the end, but died :)

It's a bit confusing that the game just progresses if you die, and it doesn't help that Pluto is really dark and hard to see much of the time. Took me some time to realize that the cubes don't actually kill you if you touch them.

Same as above, I tried to run it but couldn't; I also confirmed from paths in the .exe that the folder should be "res", but the program starts and immediately exits.

Digging through what the process is doing (via sysinternals procmon) shows the clue that the exe tries to open "TheSharkinator.l4j.ini" in the same directory as the exe, it's possible this file is necessary and missing, as it never attempts to load any of the resources in any path.

A Growing Adventure by frankiesmileshow 2017-05-19T19:10:45Z

Oh man, I got sucked into this one and played for around 2 hours on stream uncovering basically the entire map :) Great underlying ideas. I don't recommend watching all of the stream but I'll summarize points that haven't already been made.

Ghosts can't be killed without serious atk+, Better indication that you're poisoned would be nice. Poison can stack :(. The spear knights have a bug, they seem to be 2x2, but visually look 1x1, and they're placed in such a way that the coin they drop sometimes overwrites a wall tile and makes it walkable (@gustavo-christino, I think this is why some walls are walkable).

The enemies not really attacking you until you attack is a nice feature, the archers are one of my least favorite enemies :) It's pretty amazing the variety in enemies you have produced in this game, yeah the mechanics haven't really changed but things still feel varied just with different drops and characteristics. I was a little disappointed that killing the wizard in the castle didn't trigger some kind of ending, but overall really nice work.

It's square to be a cube by Khorm 2017-05-18T09:28:37Z

This is a really great game, was fun to play and held my attention despite the controls often being awkward. Wrapping levels and the expanding/contracting segments were a great puzzle mechanic, a bit linear but novel and very interesting. I love that the player is a square/cube that rotates as it should, but this both provides novel mechanics (jumping at the right time) and negatives (many intuitive movements are punished, difficulty with consistent motion). Overall it's just really clever and experimental and great to see :) One way to make the puzzles more non-linear would be to have a "expand/contract" tile that alternately exposes and removes its associated map column. Another neat idea that would make this kind of puzzle more complex would be adding/removing columns.

Nice game - good mix of enemies and firing patterns, and I agree with others that the floaty controls contribute to the difficulty in a good way. Yeah, sadly resource harvesting isn't implemented yet. Probably less than an hour of coding away from making that work, but the deadline came :) Will have to prioritize better next time. Thanks for the feedback.

Something Something by sgstair 2017-05-04T22:54:24Z

@frankiesmileshow The pathfinding took a few hours to put together but it's functionally pretty simple - It's a two-tier approach, since the game is tile based it does an A* search for a path through the tiles, then computes a path within each tile to connect to bordering tiles in the path. Very basic so far, but I have a lot of ideas for expanding (pathing around obstacles inside tiles, slight wandering, other stuff) - I did run into your stream the other day, but didn't realize that you had run across my game, thanks for linking

@ragnta Building is also unimplemented at this point. :( Very close to being ready, but can't be done in the LD build. If anyone cares to look into the source, the engine code exists to create/manage the build task, but UI for picking a build location isn't done and workers don't execute on the build/resource collection/attack tasks yet. I should mention I'm super proud of the game engine core, it's very generic. But probably overengineered for an LD :)

Something Something by sgstair 2017-05-05T05:42:59Z

@wildmusketeer - Thanks for the prompting, I was on the fence about writing a postmortem but I have now decided to do so this weekend. (Side note, map editor has a move tool, and also holding left shift will move from any tool)

I've been planning to spend this Saturday and the following Saturday, at least, finishing this game up and trying to realize my original vision (which is way more ambitious than it even seems now... It's been almost 8 years since I last entered LD, I may have become a /little/ overconfident). I'll be streaming the process on twitch, and will be happy to answer any questions that come up along the way.

Something Something by sgstair 2017-05-10T02:28:21Z

@Chupachu Thanks, you're very much correct, and I realize my biggest problem was that I spent way too much time on graphics before I got the actual gameplay working. I just finished writing a [Postmortem](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/something-something/something-postmortem-something-something) that concludes with exactly that (CC @wildmusketeer)

Also, thank you to everyone I haven't expressly replied to, I do appreciate the feedback and I plan to play your games and provide some feedback after I finish the insane project I started to play 100 random games :)

Something Something by sgstair 2017-05-17T22:14:12Z

@random-storykeeper, the mouse tracking problem sounds like an aspect ratio issue I've seen, did you somehow go fullscreen? I'm not quite sure how you could get into that state because I did disable window size changes, but I will eventually fix the codebase to deal with active area size changes.

@kate-kligman Interesting. I'm having difficulty understanding why this might happen. If you have the chance can you hit the save/load buttons from the map editor to see if it causes the same crash for you? Thanks for the report, I'll see if I can figure it out.

Just wow, there is quite a lot going on in this game, it's difficult to keep up with it all. Took me some time to realize that the missiles were not something the paddle should avoid, they're for targeting planets. The AI is also somewhat scarily good at this. Really cool ideas here, I think some refinement on the controls would make it more playable, especially the buying upgrades part was pretty awkward.

The continue mechanic where you retry with all your points and tech makes it a lot of fun to progress, and by the time you get all the upgrades it's really satisfying to play. Nice looking game; really difficult to follow though. The random generation feels unfair, there's a lot of variation between runs and it gets so fast that I can barely see the gap on the right end of the screen before I have to react to it. Coupled with the insane speed you move vertically it feels a bit out of control, maybe that's good for this kind of game :) dunno.

Interesting ideas, pretty nice graphics but the gameplay needs work. One huge problem is the app does not capture the mouse like most FPSes do - so running it in windowed mode / with multiple monitors is really challenging. I do really like the movement pattern of the enemy missiles - next time I'd suggest investing just a bit of time into some visual feedback that you were hit, and that you hit something; a little goes a long way to making actions in your game feel more meaningful, and not surprising your player in a bad way :)

Let's Be Happy in Our Small World by Tuomo 2017-05-19T18:53:57Z

Really nice game - simple but pretty refined. I'm a big fan of filtering the music in the selection screen. I would love to see some persistent UI with the score and stage number. After a while it starts to get pretty tough to tell people apart as you get gloves, and people with just slightly different pants colors, but it doesn't seem unfair, just difficult. All the false flags of someone jumping in front of a vase and waving, or something, are brilliant. The level I finially missed, I wasn't really able to see the character clearly because of everything else going on, and the ending is pretty amazing too.

Simple, but nice looking game, sound design makes for a really nice atmosphere. I'll echo what others have said, the control system took me a while to figure out, but once I did it wasn't too hard to proceed normally. I would love to see the gameplay expanded on, it already feels pretty good to play but gets boring pretty quickly.

@clegamecoop, yeah I got the sense that I had missed the overall goal after reading more of the comments here, an indicator may have helped me work it out, I guessed it was no harm to run into things occasionally and the survival time was the ultimate metric. My hope with the stream was that seeing my experience would be useful feedback in its own way, so I'm glad you liked it.

@morbidcamel101, thanks for visiting my stream - I did get around to playing this game on stream here: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/143780402 - starting at 1:52:45

This game has a really nice environment, good soundtrack, it's a visually interesting place and the spotlight effect is neat. However, it's really lacking audio feedback for projectiles impacting against the enemy, or the player being hit (though on reviewing my footage it seems like one hit kills me), but feedback would make the game more satisfying imo. Once a few of the drones are after you, it seems like running around is necessary, as all of their projectiles will basically always miss you. Anyway nice work, the game is nice to look at and was interesting to play.

+1, same feedback as above. Got 2 coins and land, not sure if I can do anything else.

Lost In Spb by BloodJohn 2017-08-01T10:56:35Z

I'm not sure how to not die, and it's annoying to restart; This game could use some balance to be a bit more forgiving, I think you are doomed to failure in many runs at least.

PowerDown by PRANEET56 2017-08-01T10:14:48Z

Really nice music and pretty good graphics. It's a nice concept and reasonably well executed.

Gameplay has a few very annoying bugs (it's possible to get stuck, holding right/left going into a wall, then jumping -> I would expect to proceed to the side after clearing the ledge, but I have to press the left/right button again) and some of what I think is bad design (that generator over the floor of crates, It looks like halfway through the map there is an unclimbable area blocking access to the rest of the level?)

Running Low by SelfTitled 2017-08-03T04:44:45Z

Nice game, nice style. I never did find the core but I have some suspicions about where it is. I didn't immediately realize the blue tiles were doors. It's an interesting decision to show the aliens when they're in visited but not visible areas of the map - certainly helpful.

Some kind of New Game+ where you keep your vision from the previous run would be super handy, and I don't know how practical it is to make it to the core with how much power you start with (might be just too hard in general)

POWER by xk_the_name 2017-08-02T22:55:47Z

Really nice game, excellent graphics and music. It plays really well, though I think some of the later levels are too hard. Some things I'd like to see are: maybe some energy cost for shooting would be a good idea. I'd like it if you could recover health/armor, and I think some kind of low energy alarm might be a good addition. Overall really well executed, nice work.

Just wow. This game is pretty incredible. And incredibly lewd :) Very lively with everything moving, something I don't often see in LD games- I'll have to steal some of these ideas. Really well polished and refined gameplay, but I feel balance is a bit off.

In particular early game is really challenging, maybe it's okay because you don't have much time invested in the game - but it feels pretty unfair and unpredictable - I can't really tell whether I'll actually manage to make it to the next church or not, even if I'm only a few squares away. One suggestion I have is temporarily freeze your movement when you land on a church, or don't destroy unused churches, Several times I overshot a church, accidentally destroying it (and shortly after falling out of favor)

Really lovely game, It's pretty simple but nice and complete and polished. Definitely like the starcraft-ish theme. Not so much of a fan of the robots being too dumb to automate tasks, less clicking would definitely be appreciated. Also the turret self-discharge over time is pretty annoying :)

Another thought I had, is this would have been a pretty good setting to pan the sound based on where in the map it's occurring. That's always a nice effect.

Overall enjoyable and not oppressively hard, I was able to finish it on the first run, with only a few robots lives lost. That push at the end though.. it was close. Impressive use of scripted events to add dramatic tension to a simple game

CG Petrel MK II Simulator by Dagegen 2017-08-02T22:38:46Z

Wow, this game's UI is terrifyingly complex. After accidentally turning on the radar in the first run (shortly thereafter self destructing while poking buttons to try to figure out what they do in a glossy-eyed fashion), I failed to even realize it was necessary to run the radar and tried to conserve power, dying very unexpectedly for the rest of my attempts. The function of most of the buttons is practically impossible to work out...

I'm sure you have a bunch of ways in mind to improve this game but these would be my suggestions: * Make the radar actually graphically change the display, maybe don't show the grid without it, or have some other visual indicator that it's enabled. I didn't connect the presence of any visible data with the radar button (though in hindsight and with your comment it's obvious) * Simplify the UI; I recognize the appeal in having a super complex looking UI, but there are tricks you can use to make a complex UI that's still easy to navigate. Highlighting the color of important buttons is a good option. Self destruct out in the open looking like any other button is something no UI designer should do. :) * Going with the above, just don't rely on the human capacity to read and understand a lot of complex instructions. You can only reliably remember at most 2-3 complex ideas that you're not familiar with (this is why it's useful to playtest, because when you've built the systems, you are SUPER familiar with them and it doesn't register how much cognitive load you are forcing on your player) - If you can demonstrate or provide repetition for your mechanics, it will start to become intuitive and players will pick it up naturally.

I didn't really figure out how to effectively play this game... I ended up very confused about what was reducing my health, and I didn't even notice that the stomp attack reduced the boss's health by a lot more. My intuition was that maybe having the columns destroyed would lead to the next stage. Might be too hard for me to get anywhere with it though.

Besides that, I do like the environment graphics and style, and in addition the animation when columns are damaged, and the damage waves / circles feedback is nice.

I'll try this again later and see if I can get any further... (Update: I was able to get further, but I don't think I would have ever come up with this strategy)

Alienation by Robber 2017-08-03T04:22:54Z

Looks very nice, super atmospheric and good sound. Simple mechanics but satisfying gameplay, probably largely because of the nice explosions. I feel the game overuses hordes of enemies a bit for difficulty, and I didn't ever see more than the one health pickup so it was pretty challenging to make it to the end. The aiming cursor is unfortunately really faint and hard to see. I also noticed that the ants have a limited view/attack angle, and sometimes you can find a location to hold at where they can't attack you.

One suggestion I mentioned on stream was to make the beacons light up the room they're in, I think that would have a nice effect. Overall really good work.

Dark Lab Escape by sgstair 2017-08-03T07:38:10Z

Thanks for all the feedback so far :)

@jimbly There are a variety of solutions to each level, just some orientations take more beam length than others. When in doubt, sweep the beam around and find another route (or, just keep sweeping the beam around, that's fun too ;) )

@baconinvader aw, yeah - the sound effects are not remotely as stellar as I had in mind; I need to tinker more with sound generation before the next LD I think.

@boundtotheearth - I really thought there was no possibility for graphical problems with this platform... Clearly I was wrong. I'm curious about what glitches you are seeing and what kind of system you're running - and I have the sneaking suspicion that updating intel graphics drivers might fix any problem you're seeing.

Nice music and atmosphere, but pretty straightforward and not much to say beyond that. I think it would be pretty neat if the particles had more significance. I did find a few bugs (top left corner doesn't render, hold right and tap down, more details in stream - and a third I didn't notice, I seemed to collect an invisible ship part in the second level, possibly at the location of one of them on the first level)

Hyper Battery Girl by Deke 2017-08-01T11:09:37Z

Really cool game and surprisingly complete for an LD entry, nice work.

It took some time to discover and get the hang of the mechanics (and I was still mixing up regular run-jump and super jump to the very end), but the assisting graphics in the levels definitely helped and I probably would have worked it out if it were not for my twitch chat instructing me :) I didn't manage to make it to the end, but I came close to beating the second to last level.

I'm a huge fan of the circuit / electronics theme, fantastic sound, and my only complaints are the extreme difficulty and the inconsistency/glitches with the attack (and also apparently with walljump sometimes, or maybe I'm just bad :P). I guess another major factor is the levels don't currently exhibit much predictability, so the game absolutely doesn't flow until you've run a level many many times.

One suggestion is a quick reset button is useful for those cases where you run out of power and have to drag yourself back to a pit to die in. (if there is one I didn't find it on the gamepad)

Looking back over my stream, I also suggest a more explanatory puzzle to teach how to use the attack to gain height - Maybe have an enemy stuck in a lower region, and require attacking the enemy to get the height to get to a higher platform beyond the enemy.

Step out of the light by Zdeno 2017-08-02T23:54:56Z

Really nice puzzle game, especially for a first LD. Once I understood the mechanics the game was pretty fun to play. The "running out of power" mechanic really detracted more than it added in this case, especially because some of the puzzles seemed to rely on it, and you had such limited pushes. I noticed you have music linked but I didn't notice any music actually playing, was this a bug?

Some suggestions to make this more interesting are: * (Obviously) duct tape for the robot's mouth :P Lower frequency of puns, or only do it when the robot is not moving / idle for a few seconds, or maybe on level completion. * Use some other indication rather than the light level for the robot's power. It would have been nicer to have more light all the time * One possibility is to make the charge last for a certain number of block pushes, rather than just a number of moves. This would lead to different kinds of puzzles related to the power limit. * I do really like the idea of blocks sitting on the activated power line being magnetically/electrically locked in place, which is slightly different than the mechanic you implemented but it'd be pretty easy to understand and visually show.

Nice work - the graphics and music are really impressive and well done. As others have said, sound effects are noticeably absent - they would add a lot. Gameplay is pretty intuitive and solid and it quickly becomes difficult to "cope" as the enemies swarm more and more. It works quite well as it is, but more enemy types would probably make it more interesting.

I didn't get very far with this one. Agree with other commments that it's unforgiving. Given a lot of time I might figure out the magic combination to get started towards the goal, but without any kind of safety net, or proper balance in the early phases of the game it's very unsatisfying to grind to that end. It's a very ambitious project for an LD, and could be interesting if developed further.

Really love the music in this entry, graphics in general are quite nice, Once you get the hang of it it's pretty playable and not really too easy or too hard.

The boss appearing when the meter fills up is a little on the abrupt side, and the boss battle doesn't seem very meaningful as it is, maybe the boss could spawn in while the other robots are still there? Or possibly there should be some other mechanic for battling a boss.

Hm, Interesting mechanic for the robots to randomly stumble and die when they are near a rock, seems like it needs more work though, the gameplay wasn't very predictable (or intuitive, if you failed to read and completely process the instructions). The robots are indeed really really stupid.

Automate to Triumph by Juin 2017-08-02T23:23:51Z

Nice little game; it took me a few attempts to complete, and it takes a /long/ time to complete. The start is very fussy and I couldn't make it work without 2 farms before making power. After that though, it pretty much went about like a clicker game does; slowly and uneventfully :) slowly replacing objects with higher producing ones and upgrading them.

I was confused by the "low power" notifications when I was at ~96 power, I think it's just because both of my power workers were sleeping but this seems a bit bad.

Overall, there's a fair amount of depth with the upgrades, though it's hard to observe any real improvement with the upgrades. The upgrades also help counteract some of the sort-of mean spirited design (Power consumption increases when low?! limited uses on the beds, that's just evil!) It kept my interest to the point where I completed it, but I did feel like it was dragging on.

LD40 — The more you have, the worse it is

Social Status Simulator 2017 by sgstair 2017-12-04T21:52:35Z

@gistnoesis I agree the code quality suffered with all the features I hacked into it, but the nice thing about C# is that if I decide to develop it further, I'm confident it will be pretty easy to untangle. I'm pretty familiar with immutable data ideas and understand the core ideas behind redux, and most of the game state is already pushed forward in a mostly-atomic way around transactions (game actions); I guess immutability would better enforce that - but are there other reasons to prefer that approach? (I'm curious, maybe I'm missing something)

Social Status Simulator 2017 by sgstair 2017-12-04T23:06:48Z

@gistnoesis Ah - You probably didn't notice because I didn't make use of it, but I did produce repeatable unique identifiers for the actions that I was going to serialize and use to replay the sequence (if I were to implement leaderboards) - I'm pretty confident that it would have worked, but it was quite a bit of a hack. Thanks for the discussion, you've brought up some good points I'll consider in the future.
