LD38 — A Small World

Endless Hexagon by David Cookie 2017-05-04T03:38:56Z

Something seems off between the tutorial description of recycle and how it actually works. It says click adjacent to a ruin tile to return it to normal, but in the following scenario:

RecycleOddity.png

There are no ruin tiles showing, but clicking in the middle consumes the recycle and does nothing to prevent the six ruin tiles from showing up.

Cowmets by NickZangus 2017-05-06T17:00:38Z

Neat game with really impressive art for a jam, took me a few tries to figure out how to lasso a cowmet; wasn't sure if I needed to touch them or herd them to the planet or what (and I picked one of the rares to start I think without realizing). The camera seemed way too easy to move around at first but after playing more I realized why it had to be that way; might be rough for people sensitive to motion sickness :D

There seemed to be some hitches at least in the web player version which could be a bit frustrating (hitching while trying to catch one of the red cows was nearly a guaranteed escape for them).

AS Mall World by Sean S. LeBlanc 2017-05-05T05:01:36Z

The post processing was a bit over the top, but running around with a money gun was cool.

Daydreaming Island by camilo 2017-05-01T06:17:47Z

Not to beat a dead horse but the controls were rough, nearly stopped playing before I got the hang of it. Glad I didn't though, the game was very interesting once you get past that initial jankiness. Impressive scope and atmosphere.

Bunosphere by torcado 2017-05-02T04:33:28Z

I loved this game, fun world to explore with varied puzzle goals and a great aesthetic. I don't actually know exactly how I solved the last puzzle (the two compasess; I'd gotten all the numbers to light up and I was near the large bolder, tabbed over to write some more here, and tabbed back and it had moved), but otherwise I finished with all the carrots.

As others have said, the invisible walls were a little bit frustrating (more because there are some areas where nothing is on the horizon and I can't get a sense of whether or not I'm even moving anymore). Making them visible would have worked but having a bit of texture on the ground that changes as you move would have also solved it.

I was jonsing for some additional reward when I got items, even a simple bfxr coin beep would have been nice :)

Slice of Life by tweedle 2017-05-04T04:23:24Z

Pizzamancy! (only word for the end-game screen). I liked the art style and the game itself was fun but it seems like the only really relevant powers are 2 (and 5 if you accidentally get yourself killed).

Edge of the Abyss by piscythe 2017-05-05T07:02:36Z

I tried a couple of times doing mostly units or trying to do crystals and died pretty quickly. After I built my first tower I realized it gave the same benefit as a crystal + lazors, so I immediately restarted and did only that, making it ~7 minutes on that try. The lesson is to read the write-up which mention that all buildings generate resources :)

Cool to see a RTS done in 48 hours, but the difficulty curve seemed a bit on the harsh side; you basically have to try and die a few times to learn the rules, and I generally felt like I kept needing to build towers constantly so I didn't get a chance to save up and see some of the higher tier units.

Chill Bill by drtizzle 2017-05-02T05:04:16Z

Nice interpretation of the theme and I loved the sprite cutscene.

Asymmetry by ChuiGum 2017-05-02T03:53:55Z

I enjoyed playing and the concept of different regions having different rules kept an otherwise simple shooter interesting, trying to hop between regions and enjoy an advantage until the enemies get there; music shifting to match the region was a nice touch. I also liked leaving an indicator on the ground for a bit after getting hit, which was especially useful when you're in the small areas after a lot of bullets are flying around as added feedback without having to look at the health bar.

Ran into a minor bug: once I ran into control issues after pressing space, where it seemed like my controls got stuck and I just moved off to the left. I tried pressing and releasing wasd and the arrow keys and couldn't get unstuck until I tabbed away, tabbed back and clicked into the game.

Lab 493 by Remicy 2017-05-12T03:37:40Z

Nice complete experience with a cohesive art style, impressive for 10 hours. Not a lot of challenge or replay interest in the gameplay though.

River Flow by slowian 2017-05-04T05:18:41Z

Fun puzzle-oriented take on Pipe Dream. I was playing using the keyboard to pick pieces instead of using the mouse and I kept pressing the number corresponding to the # remaining rather than the correct slot number on accident. I'm not sure if a slightly different presentation would help, or perhaps using a contiguous row of keys for the shortcuts (e.g., zxcvbn). The latter would probably need a couple of options for different keyboard layouts though.

The Core by ectucker1 2017-05-14T02:59:02Z

Very fun puzzle game and an impressive number of levels for a jam; always a good sign when you just keep playing the next level without wondering when to stop. Like others, the game froze after I finished a level (perhaps the last one) with the tutorial displaying on top of the level I just finished.

Some minor feedback, it was a little hard to 'read' the tiles at the bottom, would have been better with white/dark grey or transparent/dark grey rather than light grey/dark grey, and I was really missing a 'reset without removing my pieces' option. The portals made some of levels too easy (perhaps rewarding points for leftover tiles or a 1/2/3 star rating would make this seem intended?).

Supernova by Veralos 2017-05-04T03:18:44Z

Enjoyed playing this and impressive scope in terms of having two modes and a number of different levels. I liked the successive heat shields as a difficulty gating mechanic as well (at least for the first layer, the levels didn't seem to get much harder after that). Lots of nice little touches like the title getting out of the way when at the top of the screen, terrain showing both in front and behind of the player, etc...

My only real complaint is the lack of diversity in room layouts, after the second set of planets I kept seeing repeats of room layouts, but it is a jam after all so that's a pretty minor complaint (maybe cut the # of layers down by 1 until there are more rooms?).

Retro Rabbit by wtoa 2017-05-01T04:47:29Z

The music matches the visuals perfectly, evoking an 80s CGI sort of feeling.

Little Sprout Garden by Valmay 2017-05-01T05:32:36Z

Very tranquil atmosphere. I loved the effect of greenery growing out when things like puddles are placed, but the pop-in from the aggressive LOD broke the illusion somewhat. It might have been nice to be less aggressive until many items are placed.

Orbitunes by ColeSlaughter 2017-05-03T07:24:47Z

It would have been nice to be able to set the volume for an asteroid either before or after you launched it, seemed like the green ones would drown almost everyone else out. Fun to play around with though.

Electric Space Jelly by inventroom 2017-05-09T04:32:25Z

Fun take on asteroids with a cute art style (the swimming animation feels great). I tried arcade first and the pacing felt a little slow; endless felt much better. The cutscenes in arcade are a nice touch though.

Minor technical note: For some reason the audio/music didn't work the first time I played it. After seeing other comments I reran the exe and it was working fine, not sure what went wrong the first time.

Small World Clicker by xatulu 2017-05-03T07:10:28Z

I was kind of expecting "everything is fine" to start going downhill and getting progressively worse, but I did not expect the punchline; it was a fun little experience.

6-Sided Sojourn by Cosmic Adventure Squad 2017-05-05T04:27:56Z

Fantastic game. I got to world 32 before making a mistake with a spider. One of the best interpretations of the theme I've seen so far, and great execution as well; everything just feels *good* from the tile flips to the crate dissolve, etc...

Once you started getting 4 monster + spike levels it seemed like crates mostly stopped spawning; I think I had 6 keys when I died. Only real complaint is the lack of strategic depth. You can 'kite' all of the enemies forever as long as you have a space to move to, so it comes down to 'do you get the upgrades or potions necessary to clear enemies before dying from jumping on and off a spike trap' in the deeper levels.

Planetary Garden by joatski 2017-04-26T05:55:16Z

I ran out of time :)

Planetary Garden by joatski 2017-05-04T03:58:56Z

@ColeSlaughter: Each successive plant costs a little bit more, the 10x button is a shortcut but costs exactly the same as buying 1x ten times.

When you hit milestone thresholds in # of plants owned of each type or across all types then the production speeds up, so a lot of the time it makes sense to go back and get an older plant to the next multiple of 25. Each successive dimension also boosts the amount you earn per plant across the board, so it really starts to speed up and then you can watch the pretty planets go by.

I didn't get all of the messaging in there for these mechanics, so there's no 'ding, you're now producing faster' at milestones, etc... though. Always more stuff to do than time to do it in :)

Planetary Garden by joatski 2017-05-04T04:06:14Z

This is probably far enough down the page to avoid spoilers for people just now checking it out, so you can see how the colors shift as you travel thru the dimensions in the gif here:

Planetary Garden by joatski 2017-05-04T04:10:41Z

Thanks for all of the feedback everyone!

Planetary Garden by joatski 2017-05-05T15:27:46Z

@Veralos: It definitely shouldn't do that, thanks for the report and logs! It's listing that you have what sounds like a usable GPU "AMD Radeon(TM) R6 Graphics" but then it fails to find a matching device. I'll see what I can do.

Planetary Garden by joatski 2017-05-09T04:42:23Z

Comments about the lack of music are totally fair. I was aiming for compo rules and didn't have time/skill (pick one) to make music under those constraints, but once I missed the submission deadline I should have embraced submitting as a jam game and grabbed some CC-BY music and opted out of the audio category.

@inventroom: Thanks for the video playthru. Pretty sure that's the farthest anyone has gone in the long garden; I only went to the mid 40s while testing :)

At the last minute I adjusted how powerful the per-planet bonus is and moved the dimension unlock down to goats from humans to make sure more people actually found the ascension mechanic and tried shifting thru several worlds. I still think this was the right call for a jam game that people will typically only evaluate for a few minutes but it does make it pretty trivial after a few worlds (most clickers go with a linear boost per ascension rather than an exponential one).

Space Snake by Hunter Loftis 2017-05-10T01:27:57Z

Nice little game. Took me a few goes to realize that the black dot on the head is the damage meter, ended up winning on my 3rd or 4th try with the head almost fully black :) Simple controls but still some depth there in feathering back and forth to go nearly in a straight line and move much faster than a more wending path would be.
