It will work on Linux or Mac as long as you have java installed.

This game was super fun to play! I loved the art style that you have chosen, it feels very unique :D I am about to take on some of my buddies now with the 2 player mode!

Check out my game if you have a chance :) https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/time-thief

Great little battler. I loved the animations. Really impressive! Audio was good too. It felt good to punch and kick the AI.

yojammerjammer 2019-04-30 07:09

Thanks, I'll try again!

Impressive game. The animations are interesting, and feels fluid. The AI is strange, but nonetheless good job.

Just and advice, since not many might now about cmd and how to run java apps, you might want to consider adding some startup scripts (start.bat, start.sh, with a java check and the command "java -jar game.jar") so the user starts the game easier.

tgiant 2019-04-30 12:19

Thanks for the advice @cpv, however I did make the jar file clickable which means that you can just double click on the game jar file and the app should run. Thanks for the good feedback.

That was a lot fun to play, the animations were really cool  Good Job

Nice small game you got! The art style is super cool and I like the fluid animations.

Additionally, I love that Start Screen Music! You should have kept that ingame too!

Was not able to play with 2 players. But in single-player the platforms are kinda pointless. Would have been more meaning full with special moves/skills. Like for example you need to jump on a platform to avoid a powerful dash from the enemy. Think street fighter combat but with platforms!

Still a great entry. Thumbs up!

Nice game! Good luck!

gurkan96 2019-05-05 07:05

Nice looking and like the concept even though it seems like you can just stand and spam controll and win every fight thrown at you.

kai 2019-05-05 16:39

Good use of 3D animation but the combat was easily cheesed by spamming punch as there was no block and it did need a little more visual polish.

I beat the campaign! o/

Unexpected but interesting take on the theme. Well, it's a fun little fighting game. It's a bit sad that platforms aren't used in the campaign, they could be made useful even in the campaign just by adding a bit of delay to the enemy's punch or accelerating your own animation, making it possible to attack & jump to evade the enemy's punch. Maybe adding a "block" could help spice up things a bit. Couldn't try the two players mode but it's a good idea to add the possibility, though.

I really liked the art direction, that's a nice style you've got here. And those animations, wow! Nice job. As for the music, it's nice, it's a bit too bad you didn't let it play in the campaign as well.

I played the game on Windows 10 and the two first time I launched the game, pressing keys wouldn't do anything in the campaign. Another thing I had was the "sticky keys"(not sure about how they're called in English), each time I pressed a bit too many times the shift key, bam, the little windows pop up came and the enemy used it to attack me. :(

Anyway, great job, especially for a 48h project. Nice music, great art direction, correct gameplay, well done! o/

Hi @ogma , first of I want to thank you for the detailed feedback you gave me. It is not often that someone will take the time and explain in detail as you did how his/her experience of the game was. Thanks for that.

Also thanks for the art style complement. The aim for me in this Ludum Dare was to get some insight and feedback especially on the art style for future games I want to make and so far I got very positive feedback. Which means I might endeavor future games in this style.

Regarding the level designs and game play I actually got sick on Saturday (Flu bug) and gave up on the game all together but on Sunday evening I decided to take the game further. Therefor the game is obviously full of bugs and flaws but still.

Thanks.

This looks really cool, unfortunately I do not have Java installed and I do not want to. Please consider using something more easy to deploy. Many programming languages, many engines let you export an .exe file that can be run easily without a heavy-weight dependency like Java.

enderswype 2019-05-07 10:14

interresting gameplay, i kinda miss the music, the multiplayer mode controls didn't respond at all

mza 2019-05-07 11:18

A cool looking game. You got the fighting elements almost nailed down and its quite a fun game plating with friends - albeit spammy. Shift for kicking may not be the best option as it can mistakenly enable sticky keys on Windows.

tommyflower 2019-05-07 13:58

Happy to save Paper Combat! I had fun with this one! The animations are amazing! I loved the blood effect and the graphics are quite consistent and polished. Well done! @mza it happened to me too :)

I really dig the animations! Super fluid - they look and feel great. I enjoy the art style and the game is fun to play. The AI was a bit on the easy side especially since they won't follow you up on the platforms. The game controls well but I recommend switching kick to a different key because I brought up the sticky key prompt many times by accident. Also I think the title screen music should play during the levels. Best animation of the jam imo - great job!

icxon 2019-05-09 01:35

Great to see a fighting game on this jam! Very well made animations and characters. Spam tactic works best unless you have something like combos/blocks/stamina to cure it.

Theme usage is less obvious here, but I can understand the idea of life=money when brave gladiators fight in a pit.

Here is my playthrough (got shift key issue as well):

tgiant 2019-05-09 05:49

@icxon thanks for the awesome feedback. I know the AI of the enemies are really weak and was actually done in the last few ours. I wish I had more time to create better AI.
