LD38 — A Small World

Dot by euske 2017-05-14T21:19:09Z

A pleasant 5 minute game :D Nice music and art, and the whole thing felt like something from 1990. Good work :)The game is a bit too easy however (there wasn't a lot of challenge there, just driving to a green area and waiting) so I feel the game could haved used more depth, maybe some levels with more traffic or ways to spend some of the income pimping our vehicle, i don't know! .

It's a Small World by GFM 2017-05-14T22:48:32Z

On my first play I seemed to get stuck off the right hand side of the screen. So.. let's restart :P It's a plesant little game, however, I found the dialogues + sounds a bit annoying. I quite like the graphics you have drawn, but I think there's a risk using black outline on some graphics but not on others. I did this in my LD entry too, and I wasn't really comfortable with the end result. I feel the same here. The music was ok. I do feel this is a good foundation for a larger game, should you wish to work on it further.

Wrong Delivery by g12345 2017-05-07T17:27:59Z

Nice little game. Like @philomory, i found the parcel with only three abilities (double jumping in/out of the "mouth" of the wall art near the parcel). Having seen other tile sets (yellow and lava) I knew there must have been more, so i played again to find all the things. The jump mechanic doesn't feel quite right, but i got used to it over time. I like most of the graphics; it reminds me of Repton. A shame there were no sounds.

Protolife by icxon 2017-05-10T20:02:09Z

Took a while for me to understand how to play. Controls were a bit unintuitive. But I found it is quite well designed and challenging! Good use of the theme too.

Daylight by conrad123 2017-05-14T14:17:14Z

good design, and quite challenging to play. maybe a bit too hard in some places. a nice aesthetic though :)

U-Turn by benjamin 2017-05-15T23:10:36Z

This is beautfully made. Great pixel art, sound is enjoyable, and the design is well thought out. I only managed to capture 4 flags before being eaten by a jumping shark :D I like how the hazards stack up as the game progresses, creating an increasingly chaotic environment to navigate. My only real complaint is the difficulty ramping too quickly, but perhaps I just need more experience at the game!

World Requires by phaze0 2017-05-14T21:37:42Z

I had a game like this as a child, with loads of plastic tetris-like pieces which had to be fitted together into a square. In some ways the recycler makes the game easier, because we can build from the bottom using the recycler repeatedly, to get pieces the right shape to fit. In reality, this is tedious work because the recycler rarely generates the right shaped piece :) So the game has be doing as much recycling as I can tolerate, which isn't actually fun. So overall i think the recycler is a mistake - it would be more challenging to generate a set of fitting pieces, and let the user try to reassemble them. tl;dr - There's a good game in there, but I feel the recycler spoils it.

Space Brawls by jcsirron 2017-05-14T14:01:24Z

nice story, but gameplay feels a bit random

Throw by somethinboutgames 2017-05-14T17:01:46Z

A atraight forward intuitive projectiles game. Presentation is pleasant and innocent. An interesting use of game mechanics in the menu - I just fear some people struggling to select menu options quickly. :) Level design progressed steadily, and I didn't feel anything became repetitive. However, I don't feel the theme was well interpreted.

Dwarf World by rnlf 2017-04-26T17:47:34Z

It's sokoban with gravity :D It's a fun little game, with good animation and sounds. Despite the introduction, some of the actions were unexpected, like using X to leap from elevator to elevator. Level design is just about the right difficulty, as it kept my attention without boring/punishing me, and I did manage to complete it. I least liked the "origami" wall textures. Overall a nice entry. Good work.

What Remains. by Fiote 2017-05-16T22:15:32Z

A lot of work here. I think a tutorial would help, because it's not easy to pick up. Good idea though!

Badass Hobo by freyby 2017-05-14T14:30:44Z

a pretty good entry, but it is too short in my opinion. i liked the music and the graphics. i don't really see the theme, but that doesn't matter too much. :) the inablilty to dodge was the worst part of the game, and i feel that spoiled the overall experience somewhat.

Operation: Small World by mikethewayne 2017-05-14T13:58:19Z

i agree with the comments above

Coin World by dethe 2017-05-15T22:47:47Z

This is pretty simple, and sadly I am getting glitches on collisions, and some coins are being generated in inaccessible places... The graphics are nice and bright, but the circles are distracting and quite unnecessary. I think this need a bit of work to make it into something enjoyable. If this is your first LD entry, do keep at it! Making games isn't easy.

Small Planet Tycoon by Querk 2017-05-10T20:17:42Z

an interesting resource management game, although i found it hard to feel a sense of progress or accomplishment. there's a lot of data to take in early on, and i think that detracted from the fun a bit. a good effort though!

Spike Spire by Acuity 2017-05-15T22:57:45Z

Nice use of screen wrap, but the game is too punishing for me to really enjoy it. I would have liked a more gradual progression of difficulty, andsavepoints along the course (maybe on each screen) so it doesn't keep sending me back to the start. That said, technically the game works alright; I feel it just needs some refinements in design to make it truely fun to play. Hope that's helpful to you :)

Asteroid Hopper by yyam 2017-05-10T19:44:40Z

A classic puzzle game with a nice presentation. The breakable rocks were a good addition! I hope to see more of your games in the future.

Samhain: Fly Away Home by Vanillycake 2017-05-15T20:57:59Z

Lovely aesthetic. Graphics are nice. Sound is nice. :) Criticisms: I found the jumping/flying/floating mechanic a bit awkward, making it hard to control the direction where I was going or when landing. It wasn't initially clear that the snow was harmful. It wasn't initially clear what to do. But overall this was a pleasant game to play. Well done!

Ascension: A God's Test by MatHype 2017-05-14T14:51:13Z

A bit too difficult to follow initially and there was no real indication what to do. i think it would have benefitted from a nice tutorial. I can see you have put quite a lot of thought and effort into the design and making of this game, but sadly it wasn't my cup of tea. I liked the graphics and the voice sounds. I didn't like the lava.

The Ludum Show by ketchupcoke 2017-05-15T22:28:51Z

I love a good adventure! It's pretty short, but what you have so far is great. Lovely graphics as well. My only real complaint is the difficulty finding hidden things. I'd have liked some visual clues (imagine the end of the rope being visible). Also sounds are nice to have in adventure games, but I understand you didn't have time (I rarely have time to spend on sounds in my LD games too). So yeah, I like it :)

Dungeon In a Bottle by jhandsy 2017-05-15T23:23:22Z

Well, the graphics, animation, and sound are lovely, but I found this quite hard to control for some reason. I managed to get to level 3 (the one where you have to go up then down) but I just couldn't get beyond it and was feeling a bit frustrated by it :( Overall it is quite impressive, but I think it needs some easier levels at the beginning for people like me!

Don't Step on Me by Duck of Caxias 2017-05-15T23:47:20Z

That's a unique mechanic, I've never seen it before! Quite interesting to play, but a quite hard as well. Having to use both keyboard and mouse to jump and then click on moving bricks is not very easy to do. The graphics are likeable, as are the sounds. Overall the game is nice, but is lacking some polish. I think it would benefit from a tutorial as well.

RASHLANDER by ryguydavis 2017-05-10T20:41:58Z

An enjoyable space debris navigating game. The graphics and sounds are both quite simple, but i realise that's the style you were aiming for. The shadow casting is the main thing which stands out for me, as I haven't seen it used before in this kind of environment. So some novelty value there. Beneath that, the gameplay is quite difficult, and the permadeath is a bit annoying. I only managed level 2. Overall though, it seems to be well designed and executed. :)

Micro Conquest by Blueman 2017-05-14T20:22:31Z

yeah, this game reminds me of risk too. It is easy game to pick up because of the simple mechanic. The AI could be stronger, but it's quite adequate for an LD entry! The graphics are relatively basic, though they communicate the playing field well. The engine feels solidly made. I like the tune you've included too. I hope to see this developed further in the future! Well done :)
