I can't help but say stomage in a Strong Bad voice in my head.

valicitor 2017-05-01 14:50

Very nice graphics and audio, well written which it would have to be for a text driven game, the UI could use with a few tweeks but it's playable. I finished getting to school fair easily reminded me of old school point and click games. Nice work.

icecheetah 2017-05-01 15:49

A little silly, but I was able to work out what to do in the end!

silkworm-sweatshop 2017-05-01 16:18

Oh those pandas and their politics :P. Interesting take on the theme! I wish there were some more puzzles, unless I'm missing something (which I might). Are there more endings then one?

zorg 2017-05-02 07:30

Nice graphics and writing. I had some slight trouble with the interface. I expected the possible actions in the left main column, because the right column seemed to be purely for navigation purposes. That's why i missed an option and was stuck for a moment. The empty big button at the bottom looked like it was missing a caption, too. Sadly, not every room was illustrated. :slight_frown: Still, it's a nice entry! :grinning:

Same question as @silkworm-sweatshop: Am i missing something?

ava-skoog 2017-05-03 16:19

Nice game! Unless I too missed something, I'm guessing it was a bit shorter than your last one? The ending confused me a little bit, so I had to play again to make sure I hadn't lost or something, but it did seem I reached the goal! :d

Representing the world as an apartment was a creative take on the theme, and actually having a little map really helped me understand it, and made it feel a lot more immersive. Good job on representation without mockery and stereotypes. c;

Lots of neat music, tho I see it was borrowed. But it fit in nicely, and that's an art in itself as well. Sound design can be a lot of fun even when the assets aren't one's own.

The interface was slightly confuzzling to me as well, but not to the point that it was a problem; just required a little getting used to. But I guess that's something to bear in mind since you're using this engine for a bigger game as well.

Nice job!

valiap 2017-05-06 09:50

Representing the world as an apartment was a creative idea. The text and graphic created a nice atmosphere. The game play reminds me of old text adventure game like 'i have no mouth but i must scream'. Nice one!

一个映射世界大陆的公寓这个点子挺有趣的。文字和画面有一种迷之带感hhh游戏性让我回想起了老式的文字冒险游戏,比如《无声狂啸》。

bunnery 2017-05-06 15:25

Very different and unusual. I like the hand-drawn graphics - but I did seem to be going around in circles for a while! Loved the music though - and the idea that the whole world is one flat! Interesting!

pragmascript 2017-05-06 16:28

pandas <3

jk5000 2017-05-06 19:49

I like the idea of a text based adventure game, but to be honest I don't understand most of this game.

diedickegg 2017-05-06 21:27

The game made me smile. The graphics and sound fit very well. I had some problems with the navigation but got the hang of it after running in circles for some time. I wish there were more puzzles.

好可爱的大熊猫啊!

blando 2017-05-06 23:01

Good job, I enjoyed myself :) Your UI could use a bit of work, though. I wasn't sure exactly why certain choices were on the left (blue links) instead of the right, and vice-versa. I'd suggest rebuilding the navigation in a way that works with that map you have in the corner. That'd be visually interesting and clearly represent navigation. Either way, good art, good potential, and I liked the panda puzzle.

UI

Thank for all the UI feedback. Getting the game UI to better represent the engine world model is something I've been struggling with for a while. Since LD I've moved the layout around so that actions/verbs (red & yellow buttons) are placed top of on targets/nouns (blue links). I've also started tinkering with a real map generated from the world model (not just a hand drawn image). The plan is to use the same engine in LD39, so we'll see then it helps to make navigating less of a mess.

This is what it looks like after taking feedback into account (different game project): Improved layout

Number of puzzles

@silkworm-sweatshop, @zorg, @ava-skoog: There is only one puzzle. You did not miss anything. The "original plan" contained a more complex puzzle where the tv had multiple channels and the TV-remote was missing it's batteries. But.. well.. time and that stuff. ^_^;;

franklins-ghost 2017-05-08 08:39

Nice text adventure which I'm always a fan of. Did have issues with the navigation controls also but it's nice to see in the post above that you've tweaked it now and made the decisions more obvious, looking good. Also can understand the short puzzle size as Ludum Dare always seems to just fly by for me too. Congrats on finishing though liked the drawings and the way you had to distract the panda was a fun surprise.

icxon 2017-05-09 13:19

My assumption was that it's possible to give a panda some bamboo that I harvested in the kitchen but then I built a raft

I like the projection of a world map on a game world. Probably it's better to highligh the current room on the minimap as well.

philomory 2017-05-10 07:43

I think this is probably the most creative take on the theme I've seen so far, kudos for that! It's just unfortunate the game is so short, I'd have liked to see more.

caryoscelus 2017-05-11 11:27

Great idea! I wonder how school looks in this world, he-he.

On my first playthrough i missed the puzzle by solving it too early; it's probably possible to force it by disallowing tv before panda, but that may feel unnatural.

It's a pity that the game is so short (good job adding details like panda bamboo return, though). Also music switching is too abrupt. Raft building can be abused, btw - i had built three rafts without anybody complaining (even panda!).

Finally, couple of typos: "The vestibule and front door can *bearly* be glimpsed" "There are way *to* many shoes piled up here."

In overall, great job. I'm looking forward for your future entries.

jordgubben 2017-05-11 18:35

@caryoscelus: In retrospect there could you could have been something that made it mossible to turn on the TV without talking to the panda firs. Something where trade a tuft of panda fur for a Pinable and through some elaborate chain of events end up with the power cord for the TV.

An inventory weight limit would also have been nice.

Hmm.. just thinking abut it make me itch a bit to add to this game.

multiplexor 2017-05-13 11:54

Nice! The texts were well done, and the music very fitting! I loved the dialogues with the panda :P

I felt that sometimes the GUI was a bit confusing, maybe it could be reinforced visually with some icons on what's the text about. Also, the game was fairly easy, but that's alright :)

More puzzles and more rooms would be great!

Good game!! Keep up the good work! :D

ysty 2017-05-13 11:57

That was really good. The set-up was very imaginative and I liked the hand drawn art. It wasn't immediately obvious how to interact with things at first but I figured it out. Nice use of the music.

vodzik 2017-05-13 15:18

Nice graphics and music :) It's pity that this game is not longer. More puzzles would be great.

ectucker1 2017-05-13 18:02

This idea of a small world is pretty neat. I enjoyed the game. The UI was a bit confusing, especially the "You are in x" link, which doesn't seem to do anything useful. Maybe it's a remnant from other games? I enjoyed the music and the art. Good job!

cliffracerx 2017-05-14 05:47

I *adore* this use of the theme, even if the game is a bit short. I would definitely love to see this idea expanded upon in the future, maybe a general "escape the world-bending flats" adventure/puzzler.

An ocean hallway certainly takes "the floor is lava" and turns it on its head.

coderdozer 2017-05-14 15:03

Cool take on the theme, it almost plays off of childhood imagination. Nice presentation.

rubyleehs 2017-05-15 15:03

I believe every that should be said is already said in the previous comments.

Very good use of the theme and surprisingly enjoyable.

MOAR Plz. Looking forward to your other games.

kepons 2017-05-16 17:31

I really liked how you made rooms in the shapes of continents, very clever!

diptoman 2017-05-16 19:11

This was so random and funny and unique in ways I love. Good job!

acotis 2017-05-16 19:48

Not bad. The layout was pretty hard to understand, but I managed to bumble my way through the entire game. I happened to see your new UI in the comments above; it looks a lot better.

I really liked the music in each "room", but I wish it hadn't kept cutting out whenever I changed rooms.

I also liked the humor here: "ROAR! (Dear fellow. You may want to avoid taking those from me. I am quite large and you seem to enjoy having all limbs.)" I cracked up at that :)

Very creative use of the theme!

pascalman 2017-05-16 20:09

Very nice game! Good job!

lone-spelunker 2017-05-19 16:28

Nice little adventure game. I liked the illustrations and the premise. I had the same concerns as other players about the UI, but reading your notes, it sounds like you've got that under control for future games with the same engine - looking forward to playing them in LD39.

I managed to get to the end, but I wasn't able to wake up the roommate - is that possible?

jordgubben 2017-05-19 17:21

@lone-spelunker No, waking her up is not possible. Waking her by turning the TV-volume up high (or something like that) would have been a cool puzzle though.

tinycastleguy 2017-05-20 03:38

Very, very creative entry! I loved the concept art and mix of different cultures represented in areas within the game; it was a clever usage of the theme and gave the game its own unique style. However, the lack of options and story prevented it from being super engaging, at least from a gameplay perspective. I would really enjoy a full version of this game, perhaps with more hallways and areas of the apartment to explore, more complex puzzles and representations of Australia and Antarctica. Maybe even some original music (I know I would like to compose for a game with multiple genres of music like this). But for what it was, I don't think I've ever seen this concept in a game before. Good job!
