LD42 — Running out of space

Giant Sun by bemmu 2018-08-16T12:09:20Z

Played it a bit until I got on the scoreboard. I really like the concept, but I think the game mechanics could be better, in particular my suggestion would be to allow walking on the planet (with A-D) but other options could also work. Right now it's easy to die to a simple mistake and there's a frustration when you miss the target by a bit. I think I would've preferred it to be a bit more dynamic and longer.

I like the art, it's cute. Could've been pulled up a level further with some effects, shaders, or a better looking background. Still, you did a good job (despite the simple graphics).

In general, it's a good entry. I hope you enjoyed making it!

My Cube by gajop 2018-08-14T11:55:52Z

@deinfreund I agree with your review.

- Didn't have time to make them act as spiders. - The victory event is boring but it's better than no victory event. Was pretty exhausted when I was finishing it so I went with the easiest victory check I could with the existing code. Of course this wouldn't be difficult, just couldn't fit in the finale.

My Cube by gajop 2018-08-16T14:22:37Z

@fluffy-kaeloky Thanks for the feedback. Any idea what the UI issues were? Sounds like some shader issues. The engine we use sometimes has troubles with ATI or Intel cards, but I'm really just guessing. Our characters are a bit stupid, yea

My Cube by gajop 2018-08-16T14:24:51Z

@george-lancaster Thanks for playing :) The 1-3 key combinations were a bit unnecessary (and confusing) indeed. We had greater dreams :D

My Cube by gajop 2018-08-16T15:02:28Z

No idea but oh well :P (Actually could probably figure out the reason behind it if you provided the infolog.txt file, but it's just a Ludum Dare game so don't worry about it)

The warning was mostly there to introduce players to the mechanic. It didn't reflect your actual state.

Get Outer Space! by Nick Rafalski 2018-08-16T13:51:57Z

I love the idea, but is there no ending? It gets dull after a bit. Other than that you managed to pull it off pretty well. A very good entry all in all. Congrats on your game!

Crucifix and Tentacle by Cedric Fey 2018-08-14T14:18:34Z

I really liked the drawings and the animations. The background tentacle-mist thing was great. Graphics wise you could've improved the shooting a bit (by adding an animation), but other than that you did a good job.

Escape from Space by shp 2018-08-16T14:02:26Z

I just have to say I really liked the camera, it reminded me of old 2D GTA games (was it GTA2? I don't remember).

Blockstep by Amaury 2018-08-14T14:32:23Z

I like your core idea of building block in your own terrain to block the enemy. Have to keep watching the other screen a lot of time :) Your execution could be a little better though. It seems right now the best thing one can do is spam blocks while walking.

The gfx were pretty decent and well put together.

Pack-It Down! by Dani 2018-08-14T11:32:55Z

Doesn't work for me on Linux (so I didn't vote). Here's the log if it can help you fix it: https://pastebin.com/UfGQwAnc

Pack-It Down! by Dani 2018-08-14T14:51:59Z

@megalegomand Thanks. I used the web version and it worked.

So regarding the game: - I didn't have any fun but I thought the whole point was suffering anyway? Mixing physics and cats, what were you thinking :) - Generally like the idea

Space Defender 2000 by Sambi 2018-08-15T13:17:19Z

I recommend making the game less punishing so people can progress further and see more of it. You worked hard to make it, try your best to have everyone see the entire thing! (it could've used lives or an HP bar)

Now on feedback: - The game mechanics were a bit boring (at least the ones I got to experience, sorry, didn't play until the mines or looper gun). Your approach to the theme could've been better. - I liked the art, especially style, as well as mucic and mood setting. The firing animation is cute. Those parts did feel pretty polished imo.

Congrats on your game, I hope you enjoyed making it!

LD43 — Sacrifices must be made

To the Last Drop by gajop 2018-12-04T13:57:11Z

@turtlewit Thanks for the heads up! It should be fixed now ;)

@ everyone: Thank you for all the feedback and constructive criticism. Means a lot!

LD43 Journey by WegPast 2018-12-07T15:13:55Z

I have to echo Vernon's sentiment, there was quite a bit of spelling errors (AIs are usually good at spelling!) and the font was hard to read (almost as bad as LD's site, is it @vernon or vemon..). There was also a lot of text in the beginning, I tried to read it all but I think I forgot much of it before I started. It made sense on my third playthrough.

The music was very nice, I left it on as I was writing this review.

I don't see what we are to do when we run out of energy, just wait? Restart? Something should happen. I guess you didn't have time to finish that part. Unlocking 'asteroid integrity' was a poor choice on my part, because it blocked the screen and offered no useful info. I wish one of cheap unlocks offered something interesting, to encourage players to unlock more. It got worse once I unlocked the other skills.

There were also some balance issues, most upgrades besides crystal and energy boost are unimportant, and Miner is just amazing (gaining 5x more crystal outside than the others, I just used him). I do understand what your intention with the theme was, but balance makes most choices trivial.

Now after all this nitpicking, I have to say, the game is very good! I had so much fun in playing it, and I think I spent many hours in it - most of any game so far. Good job!

LD43 Journey by WegPast 2018-12-08T09:48:12Z

@arktas if music isn't yours, you shouldn't compete in the audio category.

LD43 Journey by WegPast 2018-12-08T12:54:59Z

@wegpast With regards to audio, I think LD rules are pretty clear, but this new site can be a mess to navigate so I can understand how you might've missed them! As it's written: - "You’re free to use 3rd party Artwork/Music/Audio assets, or assets you previously created, but we ask that you OPT-OUT of the respected voting categories (Graphics, Audio). You can opt-out of a voting category when you submit your game." https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/rules - "Opt-out of categories here if you and your team didn't make all your graphics, audio, or music during the event." (edit page of your game, was also shown when you submitted it)

I can understand how hard it is to balance the game right. Especially since many players here come and play for a few minutes, that's hardly enough to give a proper review. And players who play a lot will find many imbalances.

LD43 Journey by WegPast 2018-12-08T14:52:14Z

@wegpast OK, it seems you are aware of the rules. How you react on that is up to you. I also don't think we should be discussing this on this page any further. Don't want to distract too much from your game.

PS: I'm honestly not sure if this site is a good place to do any long-term discussion with the rest of the community. I think any post would just get buried in the midst of people advertising their game. But if you do want to start it, send me a link, it's an issue that's been nagging me for a while :)

Machine Godz by Beardmage 2018-12-07T15:05:24Z

Beautiful game, beautiful gfx. I enjoyed playing the game a lot. I didn't immediately understand what I was sacrificing (my abilities still worked!), and as some have said it wasn't clear what enemies could be attacked, but that's OK. It took me a few minutes to figure out the mechanics of it all and then it was just a fun experience.

LD46 — Keep it alive

ALIEN RESCUE by Imphenzia 2020-04-20T14:04:55Z

I'm happy with my 276 meters. Nice take on the frogger genre :) The graphics look nice and I really like their animations, all fits well together.

Linux Simulator 2020 by smbe19 2020-04-21T07:16:31Z

Nice game, I spent a bit too much time playing it. But it's also a bit too difficult, I fail all contracts immediately, and I struggle with disk space most of the time. I wish I knew which services I had installed (and how many instances), so I can free up space more efficiently. All in all, well done!

Death Trap by Xeke-Death 2020-04-20T13:14:36Z

Nice simple game, maybe a bit hard? I could only do it for about 100s

Save The Pink Skins! by gajop 2020-04-20T09:33:46Z

@everyone thanks for playing :)

@westmave I didn't make shooting the planet reduce population because that would make it too controllable. This game requires a little bit of planning (both in controlling ship inertia and population)

Embers by Anuke 2020-04-20T14:41:50Z

Plenty of game with this idea (keep the fire burning), but this one has the best execution I've seen so far. Really well done. I'm not sure if it has an ending though? I played for 15mins but I think I still had many places left unexplored.

Old Friends by JonahSenzel 2020-04-20T08:46:36Z

The music really sets a nice mood. I felt better after playing it and it made me think about some of my friends too. I wish it had some simple puzzles to solve as we go through the experience.

Also, I'm getting an error in the end, "mail.google.com refused to connect.". I assume you wanted me to send you an email or write to some google form? :)

Star Keeper (Ludum Dare 46) by Cobear25 2020-04-20T13:46:08Z

This game has a pleasant mood with fitting graphics. Mechanic wise, the tree vs repair tradeoff gets less interesting later on.

Earth Defense by aero 2020-04-25T14:43:56Z

The idea is good but the game is a bit overly simplistic.

Keep it burning by Leon Oost 2020-04-20T08:54:16Z

Yelling at the beaver was pretty funny :)

King's Table by PetTurtle 2020-04-21T09:58:01Z

end_me.png help, I've been playing this for hours

good game :)

King's Table by PetTurtle 2020-04-21T10:01:04Z

I only now realized that you can pick different boards at the start. I was playing that default board for quite some time, hoping I'd level up enough to change the map :|

Vivere Computatrum by Will F 2020-04-21T17:08:36Z

Nice little RTS game you built, reminds me of the Stronghold series a bit.

I've noticed monks will sometimes take the less optimal path when doing jobs, and I had to redesign my base due to this. I'm not sure it's a bug but I couldn't Demolish Construction after some time - clicking on the button would do nothing. Lastly, I've been defeated (laptop battery went out) despite having a guy camp the laptop charging/monitoring batteries. I wonder what happened..

All in all, pretty nice pacing for a Jam game, I thought it would be overwhelming but it's actually quite relaxing

GolFISH by Willoftw 2020-04-20T09:28:52Z

I think this game would've been better as pure 2D given this art set - this camera was a bit nauseating. My fish was going over the "walls" if I hit it strongly, so it took me a bit to understand what's an obstacle.

Once you get used to it, the idea of playing fish golf is quite funny :) The last course was pretty challenging

Mumei by Abid 2020-04-21T13:12:30Z

Why would you not want to be rated in graphics as you made it yourself? It's pretty great!

X33D by Ben Taylor 2020-04-20T09:06:43Z

The audio and UI art are pretty good, but as @feferuco I'm also at a loss at how to control "breeding". I think the main problem is that these letters/digits don't communicate anything to the player. I don't understand how two inputs create an output nor what output I'd like to get.

Earth 2.0 by AryanJumani 2020-04-20T13:55:39Z

Short and fun. Your asteroids look better than mine :) My only complaint is that currently objects pop into screen quite suddenly. Even if this was for gameplay reasons, it should be smoothed up a bit I think.

Great Filter: Climate by EntropyMaximizer 2020-04-24T17:22:10Z

I think this game has a very interesting idea, and I like how it models the world with an exponential curve near the end.

It would probably be more engaging if the hidden variables (which I assume are the funding multiplier, research speed, population multiplier and CO2 delta change) would also be visible. If the user knew how changing one number would impact the underlying formula, they would feel they have more agency.

And if only compo time would've allowed it, having a more sophisticated GUI/better art would help. There are many games with less interesting mechanics that tend to offer a better impression just because of how they're presented.

Deep Root by Fever Dream Johnny 2020-04-21T05:20:06Z

The game looks really good, nice job, but I wish there was more strategy to it. I was just mindlessly running around and tagging things and I still won.

Astrack by Fissioner 2020-04-20T14:19:01Z

Really nice graphics/effects. Music also fits well. As far as gameplay goes, I feel like I'm starting to develop RSI from all the clicking :)
