nice, but too short =(
I agree that it is too short, perhaps an entire mansion or a small house would add some depth to the area. The puzzles were interesting though, the items actually made sense for their purpose. Would love to see some expansion on this idea, what you have here is a great start. Nice entry!
I like the premise, even if its way too short. Also, random knife for effect I guess? :P
This is a really nice concise game. I really enjoyed the art style and you did a good job on the sound effects. I did run into a strange bug where I kept losing and regaining items that I had already found. Well done on getting something up for the compo :)
Edit: The text changing size was a little bit jarring for me. Consistent sizes would be better in my opinion :)
I like the Idea, visuals and room design of this game but it would be nice if it were longer. Besides that, I dont know if it is a bug but I randomly lost the items i have found.
It is a nice little game. Would love to see more, since I thought the art was really nice.
I'd really like to play more, but is too short I love the art style... well done!
I liked the art style. It is true that is short but the important is that the idea can be evolve more.
I really like minimalist graphics and I think you pulled off the visuals very well. I just wish the game was longer, with different environments. Music would have been nice to enhance the atmosphere. I reall liked the idea with the scaling text.
Matching the theme was a bit of a stretch, though. I think it would have worked better last LD.
Unfortunately I found the game to be a bit buggy, as I was able to pick up everything more than once even if the item wasn't on screen anymore. When I used the coin or ball with the washing machine it flew across the room and rolled on the floor, which was very confusing. But since I was able to pick up all the items again, I was able to solve on the second attempt.
Overall I think it's a solid idea with a somewhat shaky execution. At its core, I think you're on to something, so with some additional polish, some music and a more fleshed out story it could become quite great.
Edit: Despite what I wrote above, I would agree with @blacksheepza that the execution of the scaling text was indeed a bit jarring, but to me that was because of two things: First, the scaling was too strong, so the text changed from very large to very small quickly, which is straining on the eyes. Second, I think the scaling was not smooth enough. I assume you scaled based on length, with length being the number of letters. Since there are wider and narrower letters you get a jaggy transition. Adding some lerping might help. The effect itself was fine I think, but since text holds a lot of information, you have to make sure it's pleasant for the eyes to follow.
Pretty cool pixelart, the text scaling really was a bit exhausting though...
Regarding game design, I think you could have been a little subtler with the hints. Like when you get the plank and the character tells you right away: "I could reach that thing behind the TV with this!" Instead you could hint at that possibility by saying something like: "My gym training must pay off! That plank is already thinner than my arm!" and with that you got some humor into it as well
I love escape room games. This one has a nice and consistent art style. And some sort of ambient music would make it more atmospheric.
A couple of concerns: * Some text messages disappear very quickly. * Why do I need to take a knife two times? * What are the other items (they do not have names or description) * Cat pic looks like a message bubble since it has a small arrow for some reason.
Do have a backstory for this game?
Thank you for the yesterday twitch stream and live feedback.
Here is my playthrough: https://youtu.be/ig3jyt4crHI if you interested.
Really cool game. I'll start with what I thought could be improved: - I think others mentioned this, but I picked up the knife and ball twice. I'm not sure if that's a bug or not. - I think the text should be harder to cancel, if that makes sense. Sometimes I'd pick up an item and then the text would flash immediately before I could read it.
What I liked: - The simplicity was great. - The hints that were given to you (i.e "theres something behind the tv but I cant reach it" or the key out of reach) were really well done. - The pixel art was fantastic. I also really like the "vertigo" effect (not sure if that's what its called) that happens when you move around the level. It made it feel more 3-d.
Great work!
This feels like a nice _start_ to a game, but it's very, very short, completable in less than a minute. Also, it seems a bit buggy, picking things up more than once, getting messages that don't make sense (there's something behind the TV, when you've already picked up the thing behind the TV, etc).
All that said, the game _looks_ really good; I like the art style quite a bit.
Nice game, even though it is a bit short :) The second "thing" took most of my time. And what i also like is that you are very detailed in documenting your work. Most people dont do that, but it is great to reflect and learn from it!
Interesting game. The minimalistic aspect was probably more out of necessity than form, but it was nice. Had trouble finding the plank, and ultimately had to look at the comments to figure it out. Maybe it was the way it blended into the wall, but I had a tough time seeing it.
Like everyone else, I agree this was short, and the progression through each puzzle went quickly once I found the plank.
Sound effect when the key was hit startled me. The ending sound effect was blah.
i like the concept! definitely would play if it were a little longer!
It's always nice to find a fellow adventure game creator in LD. I generally agree with everyone above who says this game could/should be longer.
The UX could benefit from better highlighting what elements are actually interactive; the pixel hunting part of it is kind of a annoying.
The puzzles generally make sense and the minimalistic pixel art is a perfect fit for the game style as a whole.
Nice little game! I included it in my Ludum Dare 38 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMCwacAGwrA
