LD43 — Sacrifices must be made

Policeman from Mukhosransk by BloodJohn 2018-12-09T14:08:24Z

Nice game, I really liked driving the car. I did however feel that the arrows to go a certain directly appeared too late. The driving was the fun part so I did not really like the fact that I had to turn around because I took a wrong turn. (maybe I was just driving too fast )

Blót by Imphenzia 2018-12-04T12:21:03Z

Super nice graphics and animation!!! I love the animation of the character like the wood cutting. The clouds and lightning were also really nice. I found the jumping a bit hard though. The character needs to speed up before jumping and I found that a bit unpractical since there is almost no space to do that.

Volcano Rush! by jharler 2018-12-03T18:56:25Z

Fun game! A bit hard for my taste though. I gave up after dying more than 20 times (somewhere after the three vertical lava drops close to each other). I think the game could use some checkpoints or maybe that is just me.

Fallen Girl by fullmontis 2018-12-04T12:05:34Z

Cool concept and fun game. Nice sound effects and graphics. I agree with @matt-fabius about the roof though. When playing it was very hard to avoid hitting the roof...

Tribu 43 by FiloGC 2018-12-31T15:49:58Z

Nice game for the compo. Very nice looking graphics.

I think it could have been really fun to be able to sacrifice people during battle. Now once the battle started I was just watching them die and there was nothing I could do. I could not even run away when the HP got low or tell the tank to go in the front... I was just watching...

AI Flying Bomb by Bart Huylebroeck 2018-12-03T13:59:46Z

I completely lose control of the bomb once I use the down arrow key for some reason. If I don't use the down arrow and fly upside down to go down it is actually easier.

Icy Golems by jeroenpx 2018-12-03T10:14:35Z

Thanks for the nice words! @bart-huylebroeck Spectacular failings would have been fun indeed. :) I will keep that in mind.

@xesenix Yeah, I ran out of time... :) My idea was to show 1 to 3 stars at the end of each level depending on how many reached the end. 3 stars would mean everyone that could got to the end. Maybe I can still add that at some point...

Icy Golems by jeroenpx 2018-12-03T19:32:56Z

@atium-addict Sound is indeed one of the things I had to sacrifice. :smirk:

@arkiruthis @stevenjmiller I have some interesting ideas for levels still so I might just do that...

@stevenjmiller @piczkabobra Some good feedback, thanks.

@momo Thanks

Icy Golems by jeroenpx 2018-12-09T11:16:50Z

@jharler @fede @wegpast @madrededios @velvetlobster @arvejeitor @sokette Thanks!! Nice to hear you enjoyed the game! It had a lot of fun making it!

@jharler You are not the only one who thought there is a limitation on the exits, I have heard that before. I'll see if I can do something about that...

@jupiter-hadley Yes, the first levels are a bit slow. I did not realize how slow until I watched the recording. The speed gets better near the end I think, till at some moment it goes almost too fast (as @piczkabobra noticed ). But yes, I think I will follow @stevenjmiller his proposal and add a speed up button in a future version of the game. The more I think about it, the more I think that is a good idea.

Icy Golems by jeroenpx 2018-12-09T21:47:58Z

@bloodjohn Thanks!

Icy Golems by jeroenpx 2018-12-09T21:49:03Z

@zachz Interesting you mention the wavy grid. Nice to know it makes a difference!

When I was working on the wavy grid I was quite conflicted about it since it took more time than I expected, I was more than 24 hours in and the golems were not even moving yet. Aaaaah! I thought, what am I doing spending time on this?!?

Icy Golems by jeroenpx 2018-12-09T22:00:50Z

@harksa Thanks. How would you see those multiple paths? There are already some levels with multiple possible solutions.

Unrelated, but when thinking about it, I just realized I made a level during the compo and forgot to include it. :frowning: ForgottenLevelSmall.PNG

Icy Golems by jeroenpx 2018-12-09T22:03:08Z

@arkinrev Thanks! I was a bit doubtful if I could make a convincing ice cube but it actually came out nicely...

"Star score" was on the list but it did not make it in time... I didn't think of using ice cubes for it though, that could be cool.

Icy Golems by jeroenpx 2018-12-09T22:13:06Z

@esosek Haha, yes, the ice circle resetting automatically is a bit unintuitive. In my mind it made sense when I implemented it but it is indeed really inconsistent.

Music and sound would have been really nice but I don't really have any experience with making music. It will take me some time learning that.

Icy Golems by jeroenpx 2018-12-09T22:20:31Z

@meldrian All code, graphics, levels, ... were made during the compo. Those were some really crazy 48 hours but they were lots of fun!

Having to be a bit fast was indeed part of the idea. I thought it would be fun to make it a puzzle game with a bit of action.

Sacrificial Run by Cosmic Adventure Squad 2018-12-31T17:12:36Z

Really fun. Great controls but can become really hectic... Especially crossing bridges was really hard!

Funny thing though, I played it twice and the second time I accidentally ran into a house. I was completely surprised that you actually want to run into those. :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

That was not clear at all... Most likely the other people like @ild-games-llc did not notice that either. Before I noticed that I was actually going to propose to have more people join along the way so it stays hectic...

Witchie by r0wan 2018-12-31T18:44:30Z

Liked this game a lot more than I expected. It felt really nice to make potions. The wand was a really nice touch and picking an combining the ingredients just felt natural! (after I understood how it worked)

I think there is something wrong still with the difficulty curve though. After a while I knew what all the potions were made of. Once I got past day 15 it actually became super easy. Some characters even started paying me around 20 coins per potion which meant I would never miss a ITEMSTOCK payment again (after like 3 days I had the required amount for the 15 day period) and the stack of coins just went through the top of the window... I don't actually know how much coins I had in the end... (a lot!)

I never had to brew potions like the "frog potion" of "anti-frog potion" or the "optimism potion"... I was waiting for an occasion to make them but it did not happen. I even tried giving a "frog potion" instead of a "forced romance" potion (thinking there could be a fun story there, but nothing happened).

Letters from Rahima by Vottivott 2018-12-31T15:18:00Z

Nice graphics and music and the conversations with people were nice. I don't really see how the game relates to the theme though. Jumping from platform to platform was also rather hard, it was a bit hard to time when the platform would appear and hard guess how far you would need to jump.

Wizard Malikens spell failed by rohezal 2018-12-04T21:05:45Z

Hmmm... I played for like 40 minutes but I could not figure out how to get into any of the locked doors. I found the diary of some boy and two things in that house and accidentally combined them, but then I got stuck. Not sure where to go next.

Sacrifices in the Cat Yard by Lex 2018-12-31T10:56:00Z

Nice game and funny ending.

Some feedback... - Personally I found the birds a bit too simplified... I was not sure what they were in the beginning. - I also think the sound in the title screen did not really fit but the music during the game was really nice.

I really liked it! Nice cat!

Cessabit by AdultLink 2018-12-31T14:39:08Z

Had some fun messing around and inspecting some of the effects. Nice graphics!

I am not sure how, but I think I broke some of it... BrokeIt_small.png

Don’t eat CHICKEN ! by Kasaki 2018-12-09T14:35:17Z

It would be nice to have some more feedback to the player, health of the building in the middle or some high score? I also felt the range at which you could distract the monsters was rather short.

But, cool idea. I won the game. The end was fairly simple, all the monsters were running at the same spot, so I just had one monster to take care of.

Slime Dungeon by ZachZ 2018-12-09T15:46:24Z

Interesting mechanics. I chose "friends" at the end... Is that the end? That was not really clear...

Gift of Life by Pez 2018-12-04T11:51:40Z

Interesting concept and cool animations! At first I did not know I had to protect the statue but it became clear when the enemies started attacking it. I found that I had to wait a while for enemies to appear though. It could be fun to have more enemies and maybe have the cost of resurrection lower?

Welcome to the North Pole! by fre 2018-12-31T14:01:35Z

5/5 Love the snow effects and the feeling of moving the character! And the song and sound effects are super! This is really well made an this was lots of fun!

Also love the graphics in general. The level was also a lot longer than I expected, which was another nice surprise. I also enjoyed reading the write-up of the implementation details.

Fading Light by BinaryLynx 2018-12-03T18:20:52Z

I feel like I missed most of the game because I could not figure out how to repair the pipe... I just ran around trying to press the E key all the time. I think a small thing like highlighting an object when the user can pick it up could help.

LD44 — Your life is currency

Life Business by jk5000 2019-05-18T15:22:35Z

Interesting game! I liked how it highlighted the areas which were interested in a certain product when hovering over the place shop button. That was a big help when trying to decide where to place a shop.

Lifetime by Rialgar 2019-05-18T14:56:46Z

115 points, sampi rocks! Not sure I can add anything more to what is already mentioned above.

Jungle Magic by rsim 2019-04-29T19:02:30Z

The animation was really nice. I liked it. I also found the audio nice and fitting.

Aether Blade by neverautomatic 2019-04-29T20:06:05Z

Nice game. It is fun to run around with a lightsaber.

I also had the same scrolling with arrow keys problem (also an azerty user here) but full screen solved it, thanks!

There were some small things that confused me a bit though. In the beginning I was confused that the enemies still looked the same after you hit them. I was wondering, did I actually hit them or am I doing it wrong? But I just tried hitting them again and it worked.

I also found the transition to the shop to be really abrupt. Suddenly the whole screen changed while I was still button jamming to kill the enemy. I was usually thinking: what did I do now, did I die? I think a freeze before going to the shop would have helped.

Birdy Bombardier by WietseVB 2019-05-10T21:01:58Z

This game has a lot of really detailed pixel graphics and pixel animations, impressive for a jam! Also cool idea in general.

Below, some ideas/feedback if you are interested... The distinction between foreground items and background could have been more clear I think. Maybe just fading the background items a bit to white? Giving the large bird a shadow could also have been a cool effect that could make the distinction more clear.

As for the gameplay, I did not find it very clear that you had to hit the "enemies" multiple times. At first I thought I hit them enough times and they died but they actually ate the chicken? When they do that it looks like they die anyway!? :) I only figured out later when I got karma -8 that you had to hit them way more times after which I naturally started spamming the space bar. :)

Squishies by jeroenpx 2019-04-29T20:56:50Z

Thanks everyone.

@rsim Yeah, I know it is easy to get some stuck sometimes. Having a way to de-construct a squishy again would probably have helped, but no time left, so...

@grllle Hey, thanks. I really loved your game too!

@fm-studio Haha, yeah. I went for cute, but I think I made them too cute for my own taste.

@neverautomatic No promises, but I will see what I can do.

@rheel I am not surprised by that, but good to know... After all, all the calculations (physics, pathfinding, ...) need to happen 5 times faster when using the button. Turning off all the hair physics during the speed would have been wise though, but oh well. :smirk: I am guessing the lag is only in the WebGL version?

Squishies by jeroenpx 2019-05-18T17:58:25Z

@bart-huylebroeck You know me well, I always try to port to mobile. However, that is not the reason that I used buttons for movement. I would actually also have preferred mouse-only controls but the 48 hours did not contain enough time to work on that.

@rialgar It was really fun to see you play the game! Thanks for playing! It was also interesting to see you try to figure out how the pathfinding works! The pathfinding is something I wrote myself. During the game the code dynamically builds a graph of possible paths and then I am running a shortest path algorithm on that. I will probably still publish a blog post about it (I started on the post already).

@rheel Thanks for testing that!

@pierre-cilluffo @bart-huylebroeck @rialgar @jk5000 @rsim @fm-studio @neverautomatic @rheel @shunaky @simone @bbaf @mateusboga @cheesepencil @jordgubben @meskaline Thanks everyone for playing and for the feedback! Yeah, the game is rather unfinished. I did not have enough time to make nice controls, puzzles, sound ... **But good news! I decided I will continue working on this and make it a full game!** If you are interested to follow the progress, you can follow me on [Twitter](https://twitter.com/jeroenpx) or [Game Jolt](https://gamejolt.com/games/squishies/414605).

SpaceQuest by Simone 2019-05-18T16:15:01Z

Nice game and nice mood. The sound and graphics are really nice.

It is really hard to avoid beams which you cannot see coming though...

Trading Lives by meskaline 2019-05-18T17:25:27Z

Interesting idea. It took a while before I figured out I should be flying more than actually running. After that it is quite nice to play.

It is nice that you see the daughter becoming more "solid" when you get more life. It gives the story more depth.

Autumn Shores by Alex_ADEdge 2019-05-18T13:06:46Z

Did I see an octopus below the water at some point? Nice detail! It happened while I was walking across the sea. (hehe, yes, walking) I am not sure what was faster, taking the boat or walking, but walking seemed to work just fine. Personally I would have liked the boat to be quite a bit faster. There is nothing to explore on the water, you just have to wait...

There was a really big area to explore for a jam game though and the graphics looked really nice!

I think the game could also have been better if you could not get injured and such. Now I finally reached an island after a long boat ride, stepped in some lava and ended up back on the main island. (well, could be useful as teleport if I had taken the gem first before I tried out stepping in the lava? :smirk:)

The game is a bit hard to play for "Azerty" keyboard users like me . Moving only worked with the ADSW keys and these are in a very unpractical location on an Azerty keyboard. It would have been nice if I would have been able to use the arrow keys. The Q key is also in the middle of the moving keys so if I accidentally pressed that one I lost my boat. Is there a use for that key?

Can you move the camera around with a keyboard? I did not figure out that part...

Maybe a lot of feedback, but don't get me wrong, I found it a nice experience!

Lifelust by MateusBoga 2019-05-18T16:42:32Z

The antivirus scanner (Norton, Windows 10) on my computer deleted the game before I had a chance to play it. I tried to restore it but I did not manage so far. Any idea what could be causing the antivirus to flag the game?

Lifelust by MateusBoga 2019-05-19T19:56:06Z

@mateusboga @hugonun Thanks, I managed to play it now.

Nice game but it could use a bit more variation in gameplay I think. Love the music!

I got to wave 14. I don't think it is possible to get a lot further? The difficulty goes up really quickly. Wave14.PNG

Collecting Really Nice Cats! by cheesepencil 2019-05-18T16:59:52Z

Funny sound effects.

The kids went from really annoying to very useful when I realized you can misuse the kids to throw the cats towards the trailer! Practical! (You simply need to look away from the trailer when the kid hits you!)

Angry Planet by grllle 2019-04-29T19:19:05Z

Haha, loved shaking the whole planet!

Interesting way of making the graphics and they look really well. I did not notice the bird sounds until after I played the game though. (Could maybe be made a bit louder)

Moving the clouds felt really slow, but we could just shake the whole planet, so I did that most of the time instead. :)

Life for Likes by FM Studio 2019-04-29T19:42:40Z

Super refreshing concept! Perfectly fits the theme!

Stargem by Rheel 2019-04-29T20:30:08Z

Same here, I also get an error when I try to run the game: "The code execution cannot proceed because libgcc_s_seh-1.dll was not found. Reinstalling the program may fix this problem." (+ same for libwinpthread-1.dll)

BIOFUEL by Antoine Cuvilliez 2019-05-18T13:21:38Z

Nice audio and really nice graphics. Some planets that made me think of beans. :)

As others have already mentioned, I think it is indeed hard to make an informed decision since you don't know how much biofuel saying "yes" will take.

NecroBlood by Little Valhalla 2019-05-18T15:50:04Z

Nice game! I really liked the graphics and animations!

LD46 — Keep it alive

Living Mandala by wdebowicz 2020-05-09T12:57:55Z

Didn't expect meditation as part of a game, but this was nice. The graphics were nice and the music fitted well.

From a technical point this is quite nice. I wouldn't even know how to start to make a mandala... I guess it is a shader? How does it work?

iNanny by weeping-rupee 2020-05-09T14:19:25Z

Loved the intro!

The art style and music were really nice, but the game felt a bit too punishing sometimes. There were very few places I could move to at moments which made it very hard and sometimes simply impossible to protect the baby. I tried a few times, but most of them I had game over because of things that seemed out of my control.

Zoo keeper by Team-on 2020-05-09T12:27:51Z

This was a nice experience!! The audio and art matched perfectly. I had trouble understanding the panda mini game though. In the beginning I just clicked and sometimes won or lost. Took me quite a while to figure that one out.

The turtle game was really fun to play with a lot of turtles. Loved the sounds in the bird mini game.

I feel the difficulty increase was quite well balanced... Like the owl suddenly tilting rather dangerously. :open_mouth: Haha. LDzookeeper_youwin.png

Flippy Fish by Doot 2020-05-09T14:50:28Z

Whoa, amazing game! The animation, art style, music, gameplay and humor are all spot on.

Fire Keeper by Taroleon 2020-04-21T02:23:39Z

@team-on Added some instructions in the description. Also, it is simply a very foggy forest. :smirk:

Fire Keeper by Taroleon 2020-05-09T09:21:08Z

@albionbrown @alexbljack @omickron Thanks for the great feedback!

The fog really helps a lot with the atmosphere we were going for, danger and loneliness was indeed part of that original idea. It is interesting to hear that you can actually feel this. I wasn't sure whether we succeeded there.

Any you are right. The animations should indeed have been a lot faster. Oh, well, something for next time...

Friendly Fire by Revetoon 2020-05-09T14:01:31Z

Quite a fun game! The controls and mechanics worked pretty well and it was quite fun to run around and collect stuff to put on the fire. I really liked the details like the eyes of the fire or the fact that I was killed by an explosion. The fire also looked great and there was a surprising amount of content in the game.

Some things did bother me a bit though...

For example, some objects though the player had to be really close to be able to pick them up, first running into them for a while before he even tried to pick them up. Especially coffins where you could only pick those up if you came from the short side. Maybe simply increase the radius for those?

A bit linked to the previous one, but it made it quite confusing to know whether the player was just running into an object or whether his inventory was full. I also kind of didn't expect him to run slower, maybe because you couldn't actually see that he was carrying something, he just walked slower... Maybe a bit of a controversial opinion, but instead of an indication of how much he is carrying, what about removing those limits? Personally, I am not sure that they added anything to how fun the game was.

On the graphics side, those were pretty nice and the effects looked great. A lot of effort seems to have gone in those, and there were quite a lot of them, even a tree dissolve effect. On the other hand, the character looked naked which felt a bit strange compared to the other graphics. Maybe simply assigning some vertex colors to some faces of the character would have made it look like he was wearing clothes?

Those are all small remarks. I enjoyed it a lot! Good job!

LD47 — Stuck in a loop

The Looper Encounter by Shaolin Dave 2020-10-11T08:46:13Z

Interesting idea and pretty good execution.

The description mentioned that combos gave more points, but it wasn't really clear how much while playing the game. Could be nice to have some indication on the screen of how much the combo you made was worth.

Good game! It was fun to play!

Radiant Rewind by larkinia 2020-10-11T09:27:11Z

This game is very well polished and has some nice effects. I noticed that the controls of the ship also work really well, even after rewinding time. The game also fits the theme very well. I also found it quite interesting how there was never a game over but it was still impossible to keep all the balls in the level.

It felt a bit difficult to aim balls though, especially if you had to hit one specific block in a level full of holes. Maybe a line indicating the direction that the ball would bounce to would help? That is just a minor remark though.

In general, a very nice game!

I also had the no audio bug in the last level. It got triggered when I pressed the button to rewind time. Maybe I did too many rewinds?

Cleano by TwistedHawk 2020-10-10T18:02:39Z

Nice game. There are also some nice details, like the way the broom had a very nice rythm when cleaning up. I used the water gun mainly though, that just went faster.

Detachment Undone by Gossian 2020-10-11T08:28:20Z

I like the art and the music a lot. Nice mood! The dragging didn't work so well though. Tweaking the dragging so it responds well and maybe some effects on hover, click and drop would make the game feel a lot more engaging.

Edit: also, just wondering, why did you opt out of the graphics category if the game description mentions "hand-painted art"?

Enigma Cubes by Taroleon 2020-10-07T17:50:57Z

@printablealice @meadjix There is actually a limit. It is indicated on the left of the screen. You are not supposed to go over it, but we realise that is probably not clear enough.

**All levels should be completed in the number of moves indicated on the left of the screen (so maximum one or two moves). That is how we intended the game to be played. All levels can be completed in exactly 1 or 2 moves.**

LD54 — Limited Space

Harold's Furry Hazelnut Scurry by jeroenpx 2023-10-02T23:18:33Z

@xinux Thanks for playing! :hamster:

Also thanks for mentioning the turn speed. I was kind of aware, but then got used to it. I had another look now and managed to turn down the turn speed by 70% without making the Hamster movement look different or removing the short angle at which he can turn if needed. It all behaves the same, but doesn't feel hypersensitive anymore.

Harold's Furry Hazelnut Scurry by jeroenpx 2023-10-03T19:05:57Z

@kath-art-ic It is great to see how much you enjoyed the game with little Harold! Love your comment! I would give more hearts if I could.

If you noticed the counter stopped going up, I think you probably got all of them. I mean, I know **there are exactly 150 hazelnuts** in the game. I counted them programmatically and twice manually to double check. But for some unfathomable reason it is counting one of them twice when you collect them. I still haven't figured out why or how that is happening. So, I decided to just patch it up half an hour before submission time and limit the counter to 150 and hoped no one would notice. Well, that didn't work, haha.

Door Slammers by gagouman 2023-10-03T22:01:49Z

Nice game! I like the idea and the gameplay felt really nice! It does take a bit of a learning curve to be able to survive more than one round of orders though. I think it would be nice if we had a bit more time or starting money to fulfill order, especially at the beginning? Or maybe that is just me being absolutely terrible at this...

Amazing Squirrel by Sora 2023-10-03T23:16:27Z

Nice game! Lots of super nice 3D art and the music is really good! The clay-like style isn't something I have seen before but it looks very nice! I also like the take on the theme!

The blackness in the main menu was a bit confusing though. I thought something was broken because of some driver issue or something because it didn't look at all like the screenshots. You got me worried for a second, but that was cleared up as soon as I clicked play.

Even the concept art from [here](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/54/amazing-squirrel/its-the-main-character) was nice.

Not sure if you are interested, but I wanted to finish with an anecdote about that... That concept art was actually the thing that inspired me to make my own game this Ludum Dare. Before that I had no idea what to do with the theme, even 14 hours into the game jam. I hadn't started anything yet and was just mindlessly browsing the LDJAM feed to get inspiration. Thank you for being that inspiration! Your team got me started on my own game!

Nice game! The art and music is really nice and the humor is on point too!

I do feel the font in the intro is a bit hard to read, but other than that, a really nice entry!

Nice idea and I was definitely running out of space there in more ways than one, especially the first time I played.

The WebGL build is not working in Firefox for me, but since I saw people comment, I switched to Chrome and that worked.

Nice that there is an easy mode to get started.

The story really pulled me in. I have to admit, I couldn't see the young boy in the first scene. I just pressed space because I didn't know what else to do. That was the only time I got confused though. Got to the nice ending on the third try.

Nice music and great art!

Lost on Island by zaykin_timofey 2023-10-03T16:44:08Z

I see you also didn't get the Web build inside LDJAM working. Me neither. :) But the itch.io one works well.

The game is easy enough to understand, since I believe I managed to figure this out how to play by dying a few times. I am assuming I need to build a bridge (I died once trying to run over the indication to figure out it was not there yet) I am assuming I need all three logs and some rope for that since I didn't manage to combine one log and a rope. However, I never managed to get three logs. Sometimes one of the parts with a tree on it already disappeared before I could "press tap to play". With the islands disappearing, I do think it is a bit too difficult to play? I might have already lost **before** I "press tap to play"? Or did I miss something?

In general though, the game works pretty well and I like that it supports arrow keys because WSAD is a bit in a weird position on my keyboard.

If I had to pick one thing to improve the game, I would actually remove the mechanic where islands disappear or make it more clear which one will disappear first way ahead of time. I do understand that this is the part that really links it to the theme, but maybe remove it at least in the tutorial/introduction part of the game. Sometimes less is more? What do you think?
