LD42 — Running out of space

Reasonable Claustrophobia by SkullPixel 2018-08-16T12:39:32Z

Really slick graphics with this one, super polished all round, good work!

Hydrogenic by Gabe 2018-08-14T07:32:00Z

Good stuff, minimalistic and juicy! I was a bit confused by the controls too, but not sure how youd go about fixing that - except perhaps by making the entire level rotate to have a common perspective.

Backpack Squire by Squid 2018-08-14T14:47:53Z

I felt honoured to squire for that warrior. May he forgive me for my incompetence and his subsequent death.

Super Responsible Parent by dietzribi 2018-08-14T09:16:41Z

Funny stuff! Everything was on point with this game and it added so much that you did the funny intro. Well done

Nodelaya Wings by lfreinoso 2018-08-13T09:03:40Z

Good to see someone getting some dialogue and plot into a game. I was a bit stuck as to what to do once the combat started though. Took out a few ships and the screen was shrinking, I think I died and it reset, but then there didnt seem to be any enemies. Keep up the good work tho! Gamejams arent meant to be easy afterall

Get Off My Space by Jungle 2018-08-14T14:59:18Z

Foor fella! Funny premise, and good mechanics. Well done!

LANDESCAPE by designernap 2018-08-14T17:11:46Z

Nice visuals! I like the looming tower in the distance and all the ships racing towards it. Gets a bit chaotic at times. My main crit would be that it felt a bit slow for a race. Having the tower bigger/further away and making everyone 2x-5x faster would have been cool!

Rude Bear Resolution by alexrose 2018-08-15T17:14:44Z

Great job guys! All round very polished and fun game in all aspects. I loved the bears animations, all those expressions of pure fear. He's seen some shit  Only crits would be that I got caught on/under some of the platforms, which was never game ending and amusing in its own right. And when the screen resized it tended to make the movement feel a bit jaggered - something that wasnt present with the boss fight (which was all round super smooth)

Bomb Factory by Lucas Ferrantelli 2018-08-14T09:10:35Z

Oh man, a fun game here - very innovative. Gets difficult fast but its satisfying when you can get a good run going. Well done!

LEO by Bracula 2018-08-14T11:37:19Z

Saw a post about this during the jam, good to see it complete! The debris are really neat. An interesting little puzzle game!

TINY TOWNS by BearishMushroom 2018-08-16T13:40:33Z

Great in every aspect! Had a lot of fun playing, and I usually play puzzle games. Something about the minimalistic style just really works though, and this game is the most polished Ive played so far this LD.

EVOLUTION by Noa Calice 2018-08-14T15:16:44Z

Great stuff, visually it just looked flawless all the way through. Really cool seeing the planet progress. Altho I wish there was a goal you could achieve both nicely and horribly - other than destruction. Maybe there was and I missed it. But either way great stuff!

Memory.exe by Squidly 2018-08-14T07:27:40Z

Fun game! And really nice design in terms of how you present the game mechanics. Solid all round

Disk Allocation: Typing Spectacular by electr1ca 2018-08-14T14:52:43Z

Cool game, and bonus points for making multiple characters to play! Has a lot going on, good stuff

An Ode to Space by Omni 2018-08-13T08:14:20Z

Cool stuff, the rewind mechanic was certainly useful for misjudged jumps. All in all a neat little game that did well as far as audio, theme and mood. And I got 67 eggs!

Crystalmancer by Crowno 2018-08-16T12:43:33Z

Lots of TBoI vibes but its unique enough to be its own thing. Really dig the gameboy graphics! And the variety of enemies. Great stuff.

Engulfed by OmnipotentIndie 2018-08-14T14:43:35Z

Overall one of my favourites Ive played so far. Very satisfying and solid gameplay, very juicy! The whole time playing I couldnt help but feel like I was slaughtering innocent people escaping some disaster through a wormhole tho XD

High Factory by Jima 2018-08-16T12:14:17Z

Neat graphics and some cool game mechanics. Good to see a game with so much to do!

Overflow by antoined73 2018-08-16T12:29:47Z

A game with some of the better controls Ive seen so far this LD! Was fun and smooth to drive around. Great graphics too, even if you didnt do the modelling yourself it was all presented in a nice way. Well done.

Overflow by antoined73 2018-08-16T13:43:07Z

@antoined73 I think the turning speed was fine. It kinda needs to be quick due to the nature of the game, so it was good at times to be able to do really hard turns when needed. A bit unwieldy at times sure, but I never felt like it was too much. Its a boat afetrall theyre never going to be too easy to control XD

Laser Rails: Chase! by Alex_ADEdge 2018-08-14T07:46:17Z

@bladesides Yeh I agree it doesnt convey the mechanics/aim that well, I threw that text in right at the end in an attempt to add some level of direction. The chase/points mechanic was pretty last minute because I originally wanted it to be a chase & heist game. So had to pivot right at the end to make something worth playing! Thanks for the feedback :)

@psychead Cheers! Yeh something I didnt get around to implementing was a bigger scarier 'hazard zone' - I had a better canyon in mind and a zone with robots that would chase and attack you. So along with the chase you were meant to have a countdown timer to each hazard zone which would warn you that you were 'running out of space' until that zone came up! Or something like that :)

@alexey-akulovich Haha damn you! XD I dont even know how you managed to fall there so perfectly. I had to do it in-editor. Should have added a pointed collider on the plow...

@suve Thanks heaps! Yeh walking is pretty rough, I'll have to go with some other setup rather than using colliders to smooth it out in a post-jam version. Scoring simply takes place when youre close enough, depending on the exact distance youll slowly get points. Could have been conveyed a lot better tho I agree - Ive got some better ideas like having a number appear above you whenever you get points. Then at least theres something to go by.

@dangogamedev Yes the jetpack turned out really nice! I actually originally planned to have a laser whip, which youd use to attack enemies (adding it to a post-jam version) AND to lasso robot horses to ride. But the jetpack worked so well I didnt bother with the horses (not that I had time anyway) And yeh you can use the area as a halfpipe if you get fast enough, Ive cleared canyons that way ;D Thanks for the feedback!

Laser Rails: Chase! by Alex_ADEdge 2018-08-14T11:45:51Z

@mgsx Sorry you didnt like the gameplay! It would have fit the goal better if I'd gotten around to implementing a hazard warning system, but I ran out of time :/ I think audio is ok - given I opted-out of that category and it was still allowed as a compo entry. Not ideal, definitely my main weakness when it comes to gamedev so planning on working on that!

Laser Rails: Chase! by Alex_ADEdge 2018-08-15T17:23:55Z

@derek-volker Thanks, Im glad you liked the graphics, definitely a part of it that Im very happy with! Music wasnt by me sorry, opt-ed out and just threw it in there last second. And solid score. Getting a few hundred points seems like quite an effort. Its a bit easier now in the post-jam build.

@nightmaresdev Haha sounds like you were playing 'Laser Rails: Race!' perhaps? I should really set it up so the terrain generates for the player as well as the train, then you could just keep going haha

@red-pill Not sure whats going on there. Theres a link for the version on newgrounds. Do html/webgl games usually work for you otherwise?

@tony-redmer Thanks! Im certainly happy with the visuals, but next gamejam I'll be putting a bit more time into gameplay/tutorial stuff cause this one was a bit of a last minute dash in those regards.

But heres an interesting shot, hour 1 vs hour 48, its great to see a game come together and evolve! Compare2.png

Laser Rails: Chase! by Alex_ADEdge 2018-08-15T17:29:37Z

@s0rax @astericon Thanks!

@flashviper I had an idea in the works for a laser whip (see my twitter https://twitter.com/Alex_ADEdge), which you would use to whip the enemies and also redirect/reflect bullets. It would have been super cool, but I ran out of time. Buuuut I still plan on adding in a future post-jam version, v1 having just gone online today.

@koala-squad (also @gregklein @bladesides) & @Everyone else for that matter, I added a post-jam version today with a much nicer start area with a mini tutorial in it, it lets you get to your feet with the controls before you start getting attacked, check it out if youre keen on seeing an improved version of the game.

Tutorial03.png

And @koala-squad yeh Ive done the jam in the past, I wish I could have for this one to get it more complete but I'd already taken 1 day off work to do the compo, so I was just out of time and had to make do with what Id made (lacking in the theme was also caused by this). But I'm still working on it atm, theres a few features Id really like to see in the post-jam version. But thanks for your feedback! :D

AsterVoid by F1Krazy 2018-08-14T14:28:17Z

Great throwback to the original, with the spintering apart animation and everything. I liked the twist of the 'voiding' element to the game :)

OVERLOADED by rainysolar 2018-08-16T12:48:30Z

So stressful! haha But amusing to play. The voices were cool, all those little angry people. I just left the doors open and herded them on and off like cattle. A few were long along the way, but that efficiency!

The Space Between Us by plufmot 2018-08-14T09:23:07Z

Im a big fan of the retro feel to it. C64 inspired Im guessing! Neat that its two games in one as well :)

Downscaled by WongKongPhooey 2018-08-14T15:02:28Z

Innovative use of the theme! I was waiting for a level on a retro phone or something tiny tho, which would just have literally pixels XD

Unbelievable Space Runner by Derek Volker 2018-08-14T14:08:35Z

Soundtrack and pixel art are great! Was visually really nice to watch, especially that phasing animation/effect

memBrain by Sciman101 2018-08-14T07:20:54Z

Good stuff, really cool concept! You applied the theme perfectly. Definitely got that oldschool gaming feel too which is nice.

Viral by BigBossErndog 2018-08-14T08:50:52Z

Ahaha that was good! I liked how the OS UI worked exactly like windows does in a few ways. ie I accidentally clicked a document too many times and it opened up twice. Overall tho, more responsive than IRL windows so a good score from me.

Tale of the Bagger: A Love Story by trozen 2018-08-14T09:01:33Z

Humor/audio/mood were all spot on! Funny stuff with the voice over in the background.

Void Eater by Dongle 2018-08-14T15:06:27Z

Very nice looking game. Some of the controls/gameplay a bit clunky. But otherwise solid stuff! That boss is tough, and I liked the mysterious eyes looking at you from the edges of the map ^_^

Secret Knight by shinysteel 2018-08-19T06:49:49Z

A lot of fun to play, some cool game design going on here. An amusing game for sure!

Mass Coalesce by Jumpander 2018-08-19T06:56:05Z

Cool designs and I really liked all the particle effects. A nicely ambient game! The roof never seemed to be much of a threat tho, and the controls felt a bit sluggish, a bit more speed (maybe a smaller character) would have made it a much zippier game!

stROLL by jerripo 2018-08-14T15:04:27Z

I think I murdered him.

Utter Space by snakemuho 2018-08-13T08:24:23Z

Solid game, looks and feels well crafted overall. That space background was mesmerising ^_^

Planterror by Rafig 2018-08-14T11:42:18Z

Saw this one coming together during the gamejam, turned out nicely! The graphics and music are the strengths. A cool gameplay mechanic as well, but I felt like the black holes were pretty unforgiving. A tiny indicator (a flash or black dot or something) right before they form would give the player time to avoid it and keep going.

Space Run by mitsu.artemius 2018-08-17T15:13:12Z

A lot of great things about this entry! Fun to play, and I really appreciate the procedural generation, stopped the levels from getting boring and kept things challenging. And was nicely balanced!

And I came across the LD42 star pattern too, which was a cool easter egg :D

Stuck! by chkkll 2018-08-16T12:37:05Z

Great graphics, love the mood and feel to the game. A bit of variety in the levels would have been cool though, like you could have other people trying to move around, or heavier people that are a real pain, or people that shoved you back and mumbled some swears under their breath - cause I really did feel like the annoying pushy person XD Just a few ideas I had while playing. But a really solid entry, nice work!

LD44 — Your life is currency

Ultimate Financial Championship by Jezzamon 2019-05-18T09:34:24Z

Love seeing people making MMOs during a LD! Great stuff. I only wish there was a bit of music, and maybe a bit more feedback on winning/losing that minigame (which was a cool idea!)

And I like how not implementing a name choice was turned into a 'feature' haha, good stuff all round for an ambitious idea!

A Life's Work by glimaleite 2019-05-19T03:23:54Z

Great little game, the art is really well done and I like how the mini games came into it and appeared above the player. I kept getting lost in them and then disrupted by the guy delivering more work! Solid points all round but ofc could have done with some music or sfx for that extra layer.

This is your life now by reuno 2019-05-19T01:57:24Z

Woah, great game. I had a similar narrative style/concept I wanted from my game but got bogged down in other stuff, you executed the core idea really well! Love the graphics too, minimalistic but super effective. And I really liked how the choices had an effect on other choices, certainly made you think a bit!

Stranger Coins by grena 2019-05-02T13:38:30Z

Haha solid scoring game all across the board, you guys did great! I started playing because the title/art/reference caught my eye, stayed for the music and then oh damn... things got dark real quick. Great work, I loved it!

Heartaker by lukbebalduke 2019-05-19T02:18:32Z

Really great game all across the board. Loved the gameplay mechanics, when you get a solid run going you really feel like a ninja and chaining together kills was great. Good upgrades as well, altho I wasnt so keen on the longer slice upgrade, since most of my deaths involved jumping down holes. The only thing I felt was lacking was a random spawning of enemies to keep it different each time, but it works without that too so not a huge issue. But overall, really good work!

Knit Worth by ColeSlaughter 2019-05-18T09:07:07Z

Solid humour and mood for sure! I like the concept. Its pretty fun to play as well, trying to get that combo as high as possible. Gameplay could have used a few more elements perhaps, some extra challenges that come in at times. But good work overall!

Autumn Shores by Alex_ADEdge 2019-05-02T07:28:36Z

@hexiez123, thanks for the feedback! Youre definitely right about focusing on just a few elements, my greatest issue in these jams is getting stuck on things that arent very important. When it comes down to it, making the individual islands was pretty quick, but some other features that barely even came into the game (like object dragging) I wasted way too much time on. That time could have certainly gone into making better islands and more engaging content between islands (one of the main things I think is lacking). Ive uploaded a hotfixed version earlier in the week with a couple of game breaking fixes and I did enable Anti-aliasing, it was just a single tickbox I forgot to hit before publishing!

Autumn Shores by Alex_ADEdge 2019-05-20T07:35:43Z

@jeroenpx Great feedback, thanks I appreciate it! Yes I had a boss kracken-like creature in mind for one of the islands. But as with a lot of things I didnt get around to it, so I threw that in there as a kind of easter egg, and also to add an occasional visual! (Glad someone came across it!)

Yeh its a shame I didnt get around to making a swimming animation, or adding swimming stamina (which would have made swimming dangerous and something you cant do indefinitely). Likewise sailing turned out pretty half-baked. Its certainly faster in a boat though, but I agree it could be faster, I think I left rowing speed pretty slow, because I was working on a sailing mode that would have been a lot faster, but didnt finish. And yes I wanted a lot more to do on the water between islands, more to explore, things that can kill you or interact with you or break your boat etc - theres a lot Id like to add in future! The camera cant be moved no, but I would like to improve that as well, somehow.

And thanks - the issues with Azerty keyboards are noted, I should have at least bound the directional keys, but I could have also set the option to customise the keyboard setup. Noted for future jams!

Autumn Shores by Alex_ADEdge 2019-05-20T07:44:53Z

@miu Thanks! Yeh the mini map isnt too obvious initially, especially since the map is so large and movement so slow. I had some subtle indications on the cubes the game starts out near, which tell you some vague things. Maybe too vague tho!

@zubspace Scope blow-out for sure. But Im glad you appreciate what I did get done, I certainly liked how the base physics and mechanics turned out, a beginning to a larger project for sure. Currently working on procedurally generated islands. With that and some proper sailing implemented... it will be shaping up into something more interesting!

@douglima Thanks! Always a fan of some cinematic graphics :)

Autumn Shores by Alex_ADEdge 2019-05-21T12:05:16Z

@mateusboga Thanks for the kind words! Yep the UI is rubbish and most of it was added last minute just to help convey the goals of the game. The circle areas were moreso guides to where the island might be in general, its not convey very well either but basically the purple island exists somewhere 'within that circle'. Its meant to be the hardest island so I made it a bit difficult but I can see how it ends up being confusing. Ahaha yeh there might be a giant squid or two around somewhere.. watch out :P

@vinegarlove Thanks for the feedback, yeh the sailing would have made it faster, especially going with the wind but those were features I didnt quite get far enough along with. So unfortunately its a bit slow going. Glad you like the dragging mechanic tho, definetly one of my favourite bits!

Thanks to everyone whos voted and given feedback :)

Martian Scrapper by Aileron 2019-05-19T01:48:00Z

Nice work! This ones actually a lot of fun to play, kept me engaged for longer than I expected. I like the flash style hand drawn graphics as well. Lots of nice little elements and details like running over the people. And trying to shot down the flying heli-craft was a fun part of it, satisfying when you manage to hit them!

Danko by Pixel_Error 2019-05-18T01:23:48Z

Ahhh theres a lot to like about this game! Love the retro graphics, and it had this serious dark diablo vibe to it which I really enjoyed. The enemies were very interesting in their designs as well. I liked the green blobs towards the end. I also enjoyed how giving away your organs changed the character controls. More ability to sacrifice things maybe limbs too (which would effect movement and attack strength) would be cool and would leave you really trying to decide what to sacrifice.

Other crits would be perhaps more cooldown between waves, or even a way for the player to trigger the next wave so they have time to prepare/sacrifice. I really didnt have time in-game to read the sacrifice screen. Also I was a bit confused by the attacking mechanics at first too, and didnt realize the mouse position determined the swing direction.

But minor issues overall, well done on an awesome game!

Fateshift by dougLima 2019-05-18T01:31:47Z

Neat game, I like the design of the characters, altho some more variety would be cool! And funny references in the item upgrades. Solid work all round :) Also if youve got time to play/rate my game (HTML version available) that would be great, needing those 20 votes!

LIFE Corp by pl4typus 2019-05-19T02:01:03Z

Nice level design in that second level, but yeh as others have mentioned a bit more time spent on controls would be cool, I started out a bit disorientated but eventually worked it out!

LD46 — Keep it alive

The Three Sisters by dollarone 2020-05-12T13:54:45Z

Nice to see text based games. Ive always wanted to make one. Id maybe make the writing a bit snappier, since its a gamejam game. But otherwise thats fine. Maybe some visible food penalty on the choices you make too, depending on the distance and difficulty of travel. The danger value is fine to hide though, makes sense. Good work tho, and thanks for playing and rating my game, see you next jam!

Escaping by khofez 2020-04-23T06:56:33Z

Lots to like about this game, the slow motion was great, the rain effects also! And lots of nice details like the way the camera has that momentum shift when you change lanes. As others have mentioned tho, dodging cars is tough, most of the time I was just relying on luck. I think if you made it so the slow motion kicked in when the driver spotted a car directly ahead that could have made it easier, could switch back and try to change lanes before crashing. Likewise some kind of intense crash animation/sfx would have been cool too. But definetly some good potential here, nice work!

Protektor by rujo 2020-04-24T12:47:56Z

Pretty addictive. I played until the end, even tho the ramping difficulty was killing me! You really start to get a feel for it after a while tho, and you end up chasing those runs where you feel like a proper assasin haha. While it was short sharp and shiny I felt like the only thing lacking was some mob boss or something at the end, maybe with better AI and a machinegun or exploding grenades or something. That would have been a lot of fun. Solid work tho!

ADRENA-LINE by managore 2020-05-05T14:54:01Z

Very slick and oddly enjoyable. Theres a ton of things you could have added, but of course in its simplest form its very effective. Nice work with the procedural generation too, I can mostly imagine how you would have done it, but the execution is really solid. I think the 2 things that came to mind that I would add are some kind of special level at the start, maybe with some entrance gate or statues or something. And some kind of special bonus in the first few seconds, so you get some special feedback when you really nail a level!

Battle for Kyrrdon by oillen 2020-05-12T14:17:24Z

Nice work aiming for a RTS! Not easy for a gamejam. Its clear you ran out of time for some cruical features (like enemy AI, collisions etc), but overall you got quite a bit done. I had a bug (I think) where a tower got blown up and then I couldnt build anymore. But in the end I got a ton of resources, made a huge army of tanks and watched amused as they tore through all the enemy bases which was pretty funny. So I did reach the victory screen doing that! Also on my first playthough I actually killed myself by mistake - it turns out you can control the enemy tanks. So I thought they were all mine, drove a bunch of them around the place and they ended up getting in range of my actual base. Lots of little issues and incomplete things, but this could be a lot more fun with a bit more work. Good stuff overall!

Tiny Fragments by Daniel Moreno 2020-05-05T14:32:48Z

Woah 1000+ votes. Crazy. But yeh this game is great! Graphics are super nice. Audio is simple but effective with a nice nostalgia. And the gameplay is solid! And not to mention the level flow is its own tutorial, nicely done. But when it comes down to it, I suck at puzzel games, I think I got to level 4 or 5, and then my brain hurt too much! Great work haha

Desktop Garden by 0x0 2020-05-05T14:24:45Z

Facinating. Ive got no idea how you did this! Very innovative. But I did find the controls and gameplay a bit clunky. Might have been better with a more 'floaty' character, or something that flew around. Climbing and jumping were a bit tricky and collisions werent always super solid. And the windows still had keyboard shortcuts enabled, so hitting 'W' with an explorer window open made windows sounds, or pressing controls with notepad open entered text. But overall, pretty cool!

For Ducks' Sake by GaryS 2020-04-23T11:17:17Z

Those poor little ducks! Pretty funny game though, had a couple of bugs pop up like the end score page not triggering, and shooting could have been a bit easier to aim. But otherwise pretty polished and solid. Really liked the pixel art too!

@super-hadoken @garys Also a random question but what are you using to take such large & long gifs, while keeping the file size so low? Are you using something to optimize? Or is it just because of the limited colour palette that the file sizes are so low? Forever a struggle I have with ludum dare and its 4mb file size limit for gifs.

Are We There Yet by Twistashio 2020-04-23T03:35:40Z

Cool concept, certainly a challenging game, I kept crashing! Nice music also, not an easy thing to get done for a game jam.

Commodore Commander by Alex_ADEdge 2020-04-22T13:15:03Z

@larsdu Thanks! A C64 was my first ever computer, so theres a lot of nostalgia there for me. But that much being said I dont have any experience at all with many other computers of that era!

@misterkeefe Glad you liked it, very interesting about that glitch! Ive got not idea why deleting all the text does that. I see the placeholder text can come back after you delete it as well. Odd stuff but not surprising since the editor code was the trickest and most error prone. There seems to be a lot of conditions that can cause issues or break it.

@batswinger Yeh the cyberpunk graphics really came in at the last moment but Im glad they did, was looking pretty boring before then. Thanks for your feedback :)

Commodore Commander by Alex_ADEdge 2020-04-22T16:11:02Z

@adinimys Ok Windows and Linux builds are up! No reason not to have them, Ive just been lazy. But thanks for the feedback, if you do get a chance to play the linux build can you please let me know if its working? Ive got no linux install avaliable right now!

@thomz12 Sorry about the sounds! You are right tho, the ambient sound levels set you up for louder volume, I made a quick fix to make the sound a bit less aggressive for future players.

@oscarglo Thanks :) Yeh I had it in my notes to fine tune the tank movement a bit, it didnt get much attention once it was implemented about 50ish hours in. Thanks tho!

@misterkeefe Ahh, there is a bit in the instructions from the AI bot which explains you can do movements of 1-9 squares at once. I wanted to do the same for rotations to speed that up (plus adding a reverse movement) but didnt get around to it.

Commodore Commander by Alex_ADEdge 2020-04-22T16:58:36Z

@misterkeefe Ohh I see. Yes that would certainly improve the gameplay! Also maybe something that indicates exactly what square youre aiming for, before you hit enter on the command.

@adinimys Hmm sorry, what a pain! Ive downloaded and extracted the files and theyre working for me (using 7zip). The only thing I can think of is that maybe you downloaded while I was messing with the files and that messed it up, or 7zip doesnt make compatible .zips for Linux. Ive uploaded another one here using the main windows zip function instead: http://delta-edge.com/CommodoreCommander/CCommandv06_Linux.zip I'll see if I can sort out better hosting tomorrow, I should just do a dropbox link perhaps.

Commodore Commander by Alex_ADEdge 2020-04-23T03:22:32Z

@fever-dream-johnny Haha thanks! :)

@marcio-miranda @brndncn I very much agree, in fact that was the original idea I had for the game! I was originally wanting it so you would learn BAISC code (ie ABot would teach you how to code via simple challenges early on like moving to a location or shooting some target) so then youd be writing actual scripts to execute. It would moreso be a simple AI script youd create, then send the tank off and see if it worked, then iterate the design etc until you passed levels or objectives. Buuut, implementing the text editor took longer than expected, and I could see early on that implementing even partial BASIC scripting would take far to long so I pivoted away to use simpler custom commands instead. A bit of a shame because I was excited about the 'teaching to code' idea, but Im thinking post-jam Id like to continue working on the interface to get BASIC working for sure.

Also Marcio, commands can be queued, you just keep writing them and they'll execute in order. Ive solved the first level and a half typing ahead, Im sure you could type a bunch of commands in 60 seconds or so to complete all the levels if you learnt a sequence that worked well. What I could have also done would be to input a 'pause' command so the tank doesnt do anything until youve entered as many commands as youd like - something else considered but I didnt have time for.

@finn-tr @zyllen Thanks, glad you liked it, I appreciate the feedback!

Commodore Commander by Alex_ADEdge 2020-04-24T11:44:38Z

@si-wtosl Thanks! Yeh I dont know how I managed to do it, a lot of gamejam game ideas I usually have tend to have a bunch of different systems working together. Its a pain because it makes for a lot of work. But its nice when it actually all comes together :)

@amazura Yeh music was something I wish I could have gotten around to, I took a stab at it but just ran out of time. An area I need to up-skill in for sure. Multiplayer would make things interesting yes!

@bredian Fullscreen is unfortunetly broken, I didnt have time to setup the UI to be scale-able. Probably the #1 thing I want to fix in a post-jam version tbh, I always underestimate how many people like to play fullscreen. Cheers for the feedback tho.

@szkocka @jacksgamessucks Thanks guys, glad you liked it!

Commodore Commander by Alex_ADEdge 2020-04-25T05:26:45Z

@rujo @terry Thanks! Im glad the C64 was so convincing. I spent most of the first day working on the text input, it ended up being WAY more work than I expected and thats after expecting it to be quite a bit of work! The real C64 editor seems pretty simple in practice, but the further you dig into making one the more you realize theres a lot of conditions and features just to make the simplest console. As it is the console in Commodore Commander is super easy to break now as well, theres lots of glitches with it. Terry I agree tho, and that was certainly the original idea. I literally wanted you to be able to write simple BASIC scripts (ie with IF statements, the ability to poke/peek at addresses, load/save commands and so on) all to control the tank. A-Bot would be an instructor explaning how to code. But I had to pivot and settle on a very simple custom command set in order to finish the game within the game jam times. Likewise it probably helped me because a scripting game would have been tedious and slow, and maybe not idea as a game jam entry when people have very limited time to play games. Its a slow enough game as it is now!

That much being said, I would like to keep working on it and can see it turning moreso into a code teaching educational game. It would be nice to see A-BOT return to teach people programming and the ancient ways of the Commodore 64, we'll see what happens :P My twitter is here if youre keen to keep an eye out for future updates: https://twitter.com/Alex_ADEdge

It Came From Inside! by Ziamor 2020-04-23T12:30:54Z

Ahaha nicely done, I liked the graphics, and the way you can see yourself in the bugs you take over. Music was simple but effective too. I just felt like it could have done with one or two litte extra details, like a splatter when you fell off a cliff.

Agewalker by Tom Robson 2020-04-22T13:54:58Z

Really nice work, this game has a lot going for it! I enjoyed the graphics, Ive been wanting to make a gameboy style game for a LD entry for ages, this is exactly why. The boss in the top level looked great too, really solid pixel art. And not to mention theres so many details in this game, like the fact the boss (or at least the 1 boss I did find) actually has multiple attacks and parts to the battle, that was cool to see and added a lot of challenge. And other details of polish, like holding E speeding up the text, just good overall gamedesign. Its good to see a game that has so much effort put into law and world building too. I wonder how big the entire game map is as well? Seems quite large! I definetly didnt have time to see all of it.

Open Fire! by Amazura 2020-04-23T08:25:30Z

Top tier pixel art, using a mechanical keyboard I can see why you didnt need to include shooting sfx  I played it a 2nd time and let 3/4 die to see what would happen, but there didnt seem to be any kind of increase in difficulty. Either way, a neat little game, lots of polish!

Open Fire! by Amazura 2020-04-23T12:22:06Z

@amazura Haha priceless

Keep What Alive by Valeth2124 2020-05-12T13:46:19Z

An ambitious game, having so much narrative and multiple endings! I really dig it. Also great that I had a cybertruck haha. Some gross coughing/sneezing/sniffing sounds around people would have added to it tho.

LAMPCHASERS by MachMarten 2020-04-23T04:28:20Z

I like the overall style! Those shadow creatures are really cool. Really nice soundtrack too. The main issue I had was not really knowing how to fight those creatures, other than traps. They certainly wrecked my flower farm! And some glitches here and there with the main character displaying. Nice work to the team tho!

Oaks & Pines by Argon 2020-04-22T12:08:34Z

Great work, really nice visuals and polish with this one! Lightening was definetly fun to use. Like others have said though, its not overly challenging. Perhaps there could be some goal to work towards, like a certain number of turns, and then you win and a different level is started. I found it pretty easy to manage grass by keeping it in the corners and away from trees. It just felt like it was lacking 1 other element to make things a bit more challenging, something random like trees falling over and taking up a bunch of squares you didnt expect , potentially joining areas or spreading fire and just limiting the area you have to work with.

Tama-Gotcha! by JasonD 2020-04-23T13:03:11Z

Love seeing a good narrative game. This one certainly kept my interest right to the end. Stupid FBI got me tho! Definetly going on that tamagotchi nostaliga. And the backdrops and pixel art were 5/5 easily.

CosmoDoggie by ItsHornUnicorn 2020-05-05T15:24:46Z

Ahaha this is too cute! Love the little barks. A pretty neat little game though. Something I was thinking that could be added is external effects, like hitting asteroids or the ship turning/rotating or something, just to mix up the gameplay and add another layer of things going on. Well done tho :)

Revenge of the Woods by Robonaut121 2020-05-12T14:03:37Z

Nice work making a game with music and graphics and gameplay and everything. Tricky to do something all round like that. I did struggle a bit to work out the controls/goal, so making a game more intuitive is likely something to look into for future jams!

The Last Guardian by civmaniac 2020-05-12T13:58:33Z

Great mood with this one, everything looked nice, sounded nice and felt very smooth and fluid. Lots of nice little effects that ofc take a lot of time to add in (like creatures being knocked back and all the smooth animation). Good work!

Big Brain Simulator by desces 2020-04-22T14:04:28Z

Nice graphics and bird! Camera was a bit spastic at times but tbh you pulled off some tricky stuff, like having such a well made camera for inside those vents. Also why are there lasers in the vents!? XD

PROJECT AIBO by Si WToSL 2020-04-23T05:56:10Z

Nice vibe overall, I liked the way the robot moved, some good attention to detail there! I feel like theres some good innovation in this game as well, as far as the concept goes, its just a bit tricky given the execution, was a bit confused!

Tumbleweed by Brenan 2020-04-23T04:38:09Z

So I finished it and all I could say when the credits rolled was 'Wow' One of the most impressive Ludum Dare games Ive seen, very inspriring work. Love the cinematic visuals, the music, the dear esther vibes with the poetry. 10/10 (or should I say 5 stars) for everything!

Courier (Ludum Dare 46) by T1koY 2020-04-22T13:24:27Z

"Oh cool, an item" *explodes* Haha the mines caught me off guard for sure, they looked like a pickup! But nice work, the AI was tricky to outsmart and the levels were certainly a challenge.

Cabral Soldado Heroico by Rustimak 2020-04-22T13:21:37Z

Great mood with this game, shooting was oddly satisfying! I cant say I 100% knew what I was doing though, but most of it was easy enough to work out. I never add additional languages to my games in a gamejam so I cant really complain, but I do wish there was an english option :p Also nice voxel art!

Dark Star by manadream 2020-04-24T01:37:15Z

Those controls had my brain scrambled for the first playthrough, but 2nd time round it kinda 'clicked' and suddenly I could aim and fly fine! Very interesting control setup, was a nice change from typcal WASD. A forgiving amount of health as well, which minimized any frustrations from the controls. Also digging the retro 90s feel. It almost felt like a cross between a super old 80s text game and something Id play in the 90s. So a nice nostalgic feel to it. Not sure about the asteroids mechanic tho, but it did solve the boundaries issue. Nice work!

Trappy Dungeon by Potato Bot 2020-05-12T14:22:24Z

Pretty decent all round, a fun mood and great graphics/sfx. As soon as the first trap sprung Im like "ahhh yep, its one of THESE games" XD Was pretty fun to play since the whole time you just feel like youre being trolled. I did break it at one point tho, in the spike pit under the staircase section I ran out of the game screen to see if I could pass that screen - but the game just went into a broken state. Just needs a barrier wall on that edge to trap you in the spike pit to die.

Egg's Eggsoddus by Nothingness 2020-04-22T16:49:32Z

Ahhh those damn flamethrowers. Gave me hell! A really fun one though, I played through to the end credits just to be able to see an egg blast off back home. Graphics were on point, lots of levels and gameplay. Good ramping difficulty. And the music is easly 5 stars. Really good job!

The Last Tree by RiceFarmerLenin 2020-04-23T01:22:52Z

Good use of the theme, seeing a lot of tree based games this LD! Only issue I encountered was sometimes not being able to go all the way out to collect an item, seems to be a barrier in the way. Also for itch.io embedding of a unity project it tends to cut off a bit of the frame (ie the dimensions you give itch.io dont account for the extra 50 or so pixels at the bottom) At a guess it looks like your game is 1280x720, so just increase that height to around 750 if you want to get the whole game fitting in the window a bit better. But nice work overall! :)

Bubbles Saves Grandma by Caladrius 2020-04-22T12:00:56Z

A funny game for sure, Grandma dying when you run out of time was billiant, and her whining about the sands of time and abaonment issues made me laugh. Definetly an amusing little game. The controls were pretty frustrating, but I get that thats the main challenge involved. Nice work though!

Yakka by MidnightMist 2020-05-05T15:29:09Z

Super nice graphics and mood here, nice work!

St. Hestia by Endymion 2020-05-05T15:16:30Z

Great graphics, the ghosts were certainly spooky! I liked how you used a black sphere to really create some proper darkness. And just overall the game felt nice with the controls and looked great. I just wish the ghosts were a bit more of a threat! Like if they were super bad to come across, would have made them as freaky as they looked. I wasnt sure how to fight them tho, or if they were attacking me, or exactly what was going on there. Some really good elements at work here tho!

Deep Root by Fever Dream Johnny 2020-04-22T13:45:44Z

Very solid in all areas. Enjoyed the music! Movement and shooting were satisfying. The concept was very unique as well, I really liked how you have this central tree and youre basically shooting machines to make pipes to harvest material? Idk who came up with that, but it worked well. I did keep losing though, and I wasnt overly sure what for, Im not sure if the trees health is shown anywhere but if it was I missed it. Likewise having some kind of warning alarm or sfx for creatures attacking the tree would have been handy in conveying you were being attacked + the intensity of how screwed you were. Maybe some ranged enemies as well! But great stuff, one of the strongest entries Ive played so far.

Shapes by Finn_Tr 2020-04-23T03:41:07Z

Nice work, a tricky little game but started getting the hang of it. It was good once I discovered jumping and throwing the ball at once, that made things easier and took some skill to pull off. Rated theme and innovation highest. Neat game!

The Dark Cave by Tom Stephenson 2020-04-23T12:56:16Z

Great stuff, that spider was spooky! Brave to take on procedural animation during a gamejam, but it looks like it worked well!

Shah by William Steve 2020-04-24T14:38:35Z

Very neat pixel art and sfx, the two come elments come together to make for quite a polished game! I had fun playing it, but for some reason the players wouldnt go backwards. Not sure if it was a glitch, or me messing up the controls. Good work though!

Putt-Putt BOOM! by LandoSystems 2018-04-24T07:05:33Z

Great stuff, it was a fun dynamic having to chase after the ball with the tank after each 'putt'! Slick controls, the individual track controls were a nice touch too :)

Also... Asuka!! 😍

Lucky Towers! by FormalCloud 2018-04-24T07:32:07Z

Lots of polish in this game. Was perhaps a bit too easy early on, but certainly does ramp up! Really like the feedback and sfx for everything, has a good mood to it.

Robocalypse: Xtreme Pool Master by Devastus 2018-04-25T01:46:06Z

As others have mentioned theres no way to restart nicely once you hit the scoreboard. My scoreboard also gave an error. And it would be cool to get some visual feedback on the shot strength/angle. some kind of laser that emits from out away from the ball and fills up with energy might be fitting. Buuuut, this is a great little game! Ive played it the most out of any other LD game so far. Visuals are great and the physics are spot on. I like the little details how the men exploding hit the ball around as well. So other than a few small issues this is pretty solid!

Farm of Duty by Jima 2018-04-26T11:37:37Z

Thought I was seeing double for a second! Im glad to see someone else going with the farming simulator x type of game :) Overall very nicely done though! Especially considering its a compo entry. Could have done with some music or ambient sfx, but otherwise a neat little game. Certainly enjoyed the physical coins popping out into the world.

Dropzone Mars by helpcomputer 2018-04-24T07:43:51Z

Neat game, retro vibes :D

A Fistful of Shrooms by gdort 2018-04-24T07:59:12Z

I expect youll score highly for mood! Feels very western, as it should! Punishing difficulty, but fullscreen certainly helps a bit with that, good stuff :)

Ventureville by Alex_ADEdge 2018-04-24T07:52:57Z

@cincodenada Yeh so much to do, so little time! We lost a good deal of time to working day-jobs, job interviews etc etc that all seemed to want to happen during the LD. But pushed through and we're pretty happy with the progress we made :)

@tokkiseul Thanks, yeh I had a brainwave early on about doing the menu screen inside the game. During LD40 I wasted a lot of time setting up menus so combining it with the game itself meant we could have a cool little start area + a testing zone during development. +never had to manage or switch scenes at all!

@LarrySeinfeld Cheers :) And glad you liked the intro setup too!

Ventureville by Alex_ADEdge 2018-04-26T10:05:37Z

@LeReveur Yeh at this point all you can really do is fend them off. We're working on a post-jam version with some of the more crucial features we didnt quite get working that will add a lot of gameplay + some bug fixes/balancing. Was a shame we didnt get building and basic farming in. Thanks for the feedback!

Ventureville by Alex_ADEdge 2018-04-26T10:07:27Z

@dragonslumber Stay tuned for a slightly improved version with more gameplay, glad you like the graphics!

@alobker We appreciate the feedback! Ive added to my todo list for the pos-jam version to lock down the movement a bit because we agree, its like the character is on ice. Will bump up the the friction and drag.

Falling Labyrinth by LarrySeinfeld 2018-04-24T07:11:36Z

Seriously impressive stuff, best use of the theme Ive seen so far! And having those items and end boss sitting on the screen really keeps you engaged and wanting to progress. Some good hooks in this game, but the dungeon-building-while-inside-the-dungeon aspect was what really makes this game.

The Colossal Carrot Caper by rush 2018-04-26T12:01:25Z

Neat little game, was a bit tricky in spots but my coordination is kinda shot when it comes to music. Really liked the graphics though :)

Overcharged by Cryovr 2018-04-25T01:38:23Z

Neat little game! Good stuff

Spike Ball by JoshCanProgram 2018-05-15T15:59:22Z

Tricky little game! I think I almost got to the end of level 2. Good stuff though, especially if you made the music as well! Just next time, promote your game early, I hope you get some more ratings soon!

POLITICS VS GAMES LOL by Lyje 2018-04-26T12:13:29Z

One of my favourites so far, even if its a twist on the theme I think thats great. I liked how it started getting a bit crazy towards the end and then that text based part came out of nowhere. Had a good story to tell and depth to boot, so all around impressive, youll score well I expect! Nice work with the gibs too, I implemented some in my game last minute but theyre not quite as juicy!
