Quite interesting, because you can't just randomly shoot at the asteroids, you have to plan ahead to optimise the available space. Good work !

I was never good at the original asteroids! This is a nice iteration on the original and fit the Jam theme well. Overall it was a very solid well rounded experience, sounds, collisions, particles, etc were all on point. Great work! Looking forward to seeing more from you in the future!

@draperdanman Thanks! It's a relief in particular to hear that the collisions and sounds are good: I wasn't sure about the collision detection system, and last Ludum Dare the sound effects were the most criticised part of my game! (And don't worry, I'm not that great at Asteroids either.)

Great throwback to the original, with the spintering apart animation and everything. I liked the twist of the 'voiding' element to the game :)

That was a nice take on a classic game. The graphics and sounds were simple but fine given the inspiration and the aesthetic you were going for.

A couple notes: - I would sometimes die, spawn into another asteroid, and then immediately die again. - It was a little weird that there seemed to be multiple rotation 'steps' for each graphic. So I could press left, have the graphic change, press left again and have the graphic not change but have my bullet appear at a different angle. I know there are some limitations because of the resolution, but I think that taking away those rotation steps within the same graphic would be better. I am trying for precision shots, so I always want to be able to tell where my bullets are going to go. - I crashed into the void and tried to skirt around it, but I somehow got stuck and couldn't move until a meteor killed me. Maybe a bug? - I think the hitboxes for the asteroids were a little larger than the graphics, which made trying to slip by an asteroid very difficult.

Just things I noticed but they didn't overly distract from a very nice entry!

My sister saw me playing this game and said "What? Flying toast?" and now I can't stop seeing the asteroids as toast. The dying animation is quite satisfying too. It lessened the blow of dying a bit which was nice. And I died a lot because it's actually pretty difficult.

It's a nice and simple idea that fits the theme and that you executed well. You could

Nice retro game concept!

Nice game, liked visuals and SFX, music might've been nice, controls were very hard but could get used to them, could've been a little more innovative.

f1krazy 2018-09-03 19:42

@blinkenlights Thanks! I agree, this isn't my most original game, that's something I need to work on for LD43. As for music, I don't know how to use PICO-8's music-composing tool... which is another thing I need to work on for LD43! I tried to make the controls a little easier by allowing you to brake, which you can't do in the original Asteroids.

Simple, but very interesting idea, best tactic is standing and turning around) Nice, all 5 ratings. I think u should continue developing this game, add new modes etc. Gl)12.png

f1krazy 2018-09-04 18:17

@hellsquirrel Thanks! I'll definitely have a think about what else I can add to this game - something to discourage you from just staying in the middle is a definite must, though. And that's a pretty good score!

hellsquirrel 2018-09-04 18:29

@f1krazy I have some versions to solve this problem: 1) Your bullets can't fly through dead meteors, but meteors can fly through them. It'll motivate player to move, but game will become very hard. 2) Don't add scores if player killed meteor when (his movespeed <=0) 3) Motivate to move by extra lifes, weapon or/and ship buffs. When complexity of the game will grow - player can't live without new items

Coool! Nice game :thumbsup: +++++
