Didnt play it yet but the graphics look amazing!

skill347 2019-04-29 19:08

The executable doesn't work  xaxax.PNG Translation: C\Users\Max\Desktop\Heartaker.exe Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the necessary access rights to this object.

lukbebalduke 2019-04-29 19:10

@skill347 have you tried running on Administrator mode yet?

supergamersgames 2019-04-29 19:13

WOW! This is a freaking compo game!?!?!? Color me impressed!

lukbebalduke 2019-04-29 19:16

@supergamersgames thank you very much ;)

skill347 2019-04-29 19:18

@lukbebalduke Yes I did. Same error ;(

drunkardwolf 2019-04-29 19:19

Very impressive game, art is fantastic and gameplay feels great, good job

boltkey 2019-04-29 19:31

The special effects and gameplay are perfect.

I am a bit confused though. I am stuck in the death screen, not having enough hearts to purchase ressurection.

felegz 2019-04-29 19:32

Looks great! I think it deserves to be on itchio, not just dropbox :)

lukbebalduke 2019-04-29 19:43

@skill347 It looks like a permission issue, running as an administrator should do it. But to be honest with you, I am not sure.

@drunkardwolf Thank you very much!

@boltkey That is basically game over, unfortunately, I did not manage to create a proper game restart at that point, so you need to close and open the game haha! Sorry about that!

@felegz Yup, thank you. As soon as I fix some of the major problems in the game I'm going to release it on Itch.io!

suchista 2019-04-29 19:46

omg, this was really made in two days?! it's amazing, I'm speechless! :o

jk-studio 2019-04-29 19:48

**THIS GAME IS AMAZING** wow this makes so much fun has nice graphics sound isnt to bad and overall perfekt .. where did you get all your time to make that :open_mouth:

lukbebalduke 2019-04-29 19:50

@suchista thank you very much!

Interesting fact: I normally record all my work on Ludum Dare to create a time-lapse, but unfortunately I did not this time. I ended up recording only the first few hours.

Still, if you want to take a look at how the process looks like, some of my previous games on Ludum Dare have a time-lapse attached to the post ;)

Then again, thank you for the compliment!

slotha 2019-04-29 20:09

The graphics are really cool and I Loved the music, but how do you control which way you attack? I Also got stuck on the death screen without enough Hearts, Perhaps add a exit button or something when you don't have enough hearts?

lukbebalduke 2019-04-29 20:11

@jk-studio thank you very much ;)

@slotha The player **dashes in the direction of the mouse.** For sure I would add an exit button to the end, but time as short and I ended up coding the afterlife part just on the final hours.

harksa 2019-04-29 20:14

This was quite interesting and entertaining, but a bit redundant. Hopefully you'll make it a little bit fast paced because it has a lot of potential, I believe.

kjima 2019-04-29 22:48

Really impressive stuff, especially on how responsive the gameplay is, and the graphic style (which is a real highlight of the game imo). I think the game could stand to be slightly faster paced (with maybe, less reactive enemies on the screen, but more of them at once), while the armored enemies could be a bit more obvious as to how you're supposed to kill them. (It would be fun if say, attacking from a certain direction or a certain number of times was the way to kill them. As far I've seen, it seems to be either based on distance, or time? I'm not very good at game yet haha)

Those are only minor nitpicks, though, the game rocks, especially if it was made over the course of a weekend.

taylomol000 2019-04-30 04:52

PLEASE keep developing this - you could seriously sell it! I'd love to see other levels, upgrades, etc., and I'd definitely buy it on Steam.

lugo42 2019-04-30 06:15

Love the art style, and the tranformation of the scene through gameplay. The main slash/dash mechanic feels great, precisely and responsive. Really great job!

cornel 2019-04-30 13:17

Really fun to play. However, had to restart the game and go through all monologues if I hadn't enough kills for resurrection, which was annoying.

lukbebalduke 2019-04-30 13:48

@cornel I see that, but you could have skipped all the dialogues by pressing [ESC]. Thank you for the feedback ;)

lukbebalduke 2019-04-30 14:40

@Harksa Thank you very much for your feedback!

@Kjima I am glad you liked the game, and yes, I completely agree with you! The game could have adjustments in all those aspects and later on, I will definitely think about some more design twists, the idea of enemies that require directional attacks is actually pretty great!

@taylomol000 Thank you so much for the comment! I still have no future plans for this game, but who knows, right?

@Lugo42 yup, well noticed. I would say that there are some very interesting artistic side effects of the way I designed the game, the first one is that as you kill more and more enemies the screen gets more sunken in the blood - which gives not only a cool visual effect but also some sort of emotional result attached to it - and the other thing is that, due to the white and black base colors of the game, whenever you splash blood on the wall it gives the game a certain kind of Japanese color palette, which is really cool. Anyways, thank you very much for your feedback :)

snufkinshat 2019-04-30 18:05

I love! love! LOVE! the art style and cinematics of the game. Wow. It is so beautiful. And the movement mechanism is fun. I especially love the slow cam when you die.

The music got a little repetitive and I kept getting stuck on the screen where you are supposed to buy another turn.

Overall, WOW. I was looking forward to this one based on the screen shots you posted and I was not disappointed.

Oh. And one more minor quibble (you know I loved the game when I am taking enough time to point out something this small).. in your intro credits you have "It is not enough" she spoke. That scans kind of oddly in English. Might I suggest 'she replied' or 'she responded'.

neithernathan 2019-04-30 20:17

Liked the game a lot. It's very addicting, it's fun and (to me) well balanced, the difficulty curve is well refined. I didn't understand some things, like why the cost to restart the game always raises or WHY YOU HAVE TO CLOSE AND REOPEN IT IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE QUANTITY OF HEARTS. But in overall the game is fun and the feeling is GREAT.

kunonooni 2019-05-01 00:39

Very impressive for a Compo game and visually stunning! The death effects are well done and the controls are really responsive. I liked the subtheme used in addition to the main theme, Death is useful  which I'm surprised wasn't part of the voting this LD. Congrats on finishing the Compo!

toni-re 2019-05-01 16:24

Wow your game looks incredible!! Good job!

riftpoint-entertainment 2019-05-01 16:26

Amazing game! Very nice gameplay and mood. I also made a game about samurais! :) This game has a lot of potential.

anstabo 2019-05-01 16:30

5/5 for everything. This is a good game with a lot of work put in it.

nico-fallosch 2019-05-01 16:31

Wow really cool artwork and gameplay!! Only thing i wihs was that the spawning position of the enemies would be a bit more randomly. Enjoyed your game really well done!

ludwici 2019-05-01 16:37

Sooo good I hope, you don't stop working above this game. Because i want in co-op and leaderboard in future All the best

ekilibr 2019-05-01 16:40

My 5 stars to the mood. Thinking that you made it alone in 48 hours is impressive. Took me a while to die the first time, and didn't red the comment at the time, so I was wondering when the theme would become obvious. Then, I felt in the hole on the bottom right of the map. Then it became obvious !

I wasn't expecting at all that rogue-lite twist, it's really smart.

Two points of improvements that I see : - It's hard to see where the dash/attack ends, so sometimes it's hard to figure out if you'll hit the enemy/fall into a hole - Despite the rogue-lite aspect, dying can happen. Then not being able to skip the texts (be it at the beginning or during the death part) becomes a bit painful :)

But as I said, really impressed by the quality of execution for a compo game!

Good job !

jake-white 2019-05-01 16:54

This is easily the best compo game I've seen. Such satisfying movement. Lots of potential to continue developing this one as well.

nerzal 2019-05-01 17:02

Nice graphic and sounds. It felt pretty challenging, but that may only be caused by my gimpness :) Well done!

cpx3 2019-05-01 17:22

Hi there!

The animation and sound quality is superb! I think it's a bit too difficult for me. It really frustrated me, that I could not buy much upgrades, because respawn costs a lot. Also I think the warning sign is a bit fast, so I could not react in time and felt the game is "cheating" because one moment a character was jumping to the left, next moment it unleased a deadly strike to the right. IMHO the game mechanics are not well balanced for an average gamer. Overall it's a really fluid, great game. For a compo it's incredible!

pusheeneiro 2019-05-01 17:41

This game is great :hearts:

frankitox16 2019-05-01 17:46

Incredible game. Addictive gameplay, polished art style, and fititng sound effects. Only things I could add is: - Make the game pause when offscreen (Having dual monitor made it quite difficult to play sometimes, as I would ocassionally click outside the screen, and lost to someone coming my way). - Do a hint when you first die like "Press ESC to skip text". I figured it out at the 3rd death, and saves quite a lot of time.

palsina 2019-05-01 19:22

I also did a samurai game! The dash is VERY satisfying, specially after upgrading. I also like the litle touch of the spinning cursor. Well done!

zuzupd 2019-05-01 21:21

I play it over and over again, still dying somewhere at the 60th enemy (mostly brutally murdered by the pit), and I still enjoy it. I really like the graphic design, the attack looks like a brush stroke, leaving behind the blood of enemies - just wow. And this is a compo? Bigger WOW.

I hope you keep working on it, I see great potential in it.

sir-daniev 2019-05-02 01:37

Amazing game. Spent quite some time playing and made me smile every time the "Hoo" effect appeared after a wave. Loved the premise (what a bitch tho lol). Good job and hope to see it become a released game in the future.

codekoto 2019-05-02 08:29

I really love the concept and the game! It keeps me playing again and again, the only thing i would say is that when you die and you have to start from the beginning gets a bit tedious later on, and maybe a number to show how many hearts you need for next resurrection would be nice. Good job on the game though!

adam-clayden 2019-05-02 11:40

Fantastic game and amazing visuals, phenomenal work. I was going to suggest that being able to double jump or something would help, but then I saw that you could buy a dash reset. You've thought of pretty much everything. Being able to continue after dying is great for replayability. The blood streaks are on point too. There was a time where I tried to dash at an enemy but it didn't for some reason. Could be a bug? It only ever occurred once when I tried dashing at a samurai in blood. Might be a once in 100 game occurrence perhaps.

Also that blood shield icon didn't make much sense to me. I knew they died in blood because of your description, but the icon makes it look like it's immune whilst in blood. This could be better explained.

Fantastic job though, 5/5

mateusboga 2019-05-02 13:18

Nice game! The controls felt really smooth and satisfying, though most of the times I died was because I dashed into the ground and fell through it which was not very nice. Overall great work for the compo!

black-potion 2019-05-02 13:54

Really cool game, love the way we can kill 5 ninja at the same time. The mecanic of killing ennemies in his own blood are really fun. Amazing compo, keep up the good work

drauthius 2019-05-02 19:13

Very cool and fun game, albeit quite frustrating! It feels very satisfactory to play, with a nice minimalistic art.

akronsus 2019-05-02 21:00

That were short 20 minutes. Really good core gameplay. I sincerly hope, you will expand on what you now have

falak 2019-05-03 11:45

5/5 I LOVE THIS GAME. I collected all 100 hearts and it was my only disappointment that I did not get any ending. But the rest of the game is just delicious and great. Good luck!

lukbebalduke 2019-05-03 13:37

@snufkinshat Thank you very much for the feedback! I will take a more careful look at the text and make sure to find a word that fits more naturally in the intro ;)

@neithernathan Thank you. I can see that the not being able to restart the game is a common critic, and due to that it should be now fixed in the new version of the game!

@kunonooni Yup! I actually didn't even think about the death is useful theme haha!

@riftpoint-entertainment Cool! I will take a look at your game later ;)

rayriver 2019-05-03 13:38

Really amazing game!

lukbebalduke 2019-05-03 13:40

@anstabo Thank you very much! I appreciate it!

@nico-fallosch Hmm, interesting. Thank you for the feedback, I will think more about the way I designed the spawn wave system to make sure it feels more organic!

@ludwici Thank you very much for the suggestion! Right now I'm not currently thinking about working on this project - especially because the lack of time - but if I do, I'll make sure to think about a leaderboard or a multiplayer mode for the game.

@ekilibr Thank you very much for your feedback! I will try to think in some design solutions that could help the player have more control over the dash and also make information clearer. I appreciate your comments ;)

lukbebalduke 2019-05-03 13:45

@jake-white Thank you!

@nerzal Thanks! And btw, I think the difficulty curve of the game is a problem by itself, so you are actually right, I have to tweak it.

@cpx3 Thank you very much for your feedback! I agree with you, the game is harder than it should be at the moment, so I'll make sure to take some time and think about clever solutions to make the game more approachable, easier to learn, and probably remove some of the dumb difficult that should not be in the game at all. I appreciate your comment :)

@pusheeneiro Tks! <3

tapehead 2019-05-03 13:47

Fantastic job! Especially for this short amount of time!

lukbebalduke 2019-05-03 13:50

@frankitox16 Thank you for the feedback! You're right, I only noticed all the problems related to clicking out of the window once people started to play the game, cause during the development it never occurred in my mind actually. And yes, I should have made clearer the skip option in dialogues and scenes. I appreciate your comment and I'll make sure to take a look at those aspects ;)

@palsina Lots of samurai games I see haha! Yup, thank you very much for the feedback, I'll take a look at yours later!

@zuzupd Thank you very much! I'm glad that you have a great time with the game :D

@sir-daniev Thank you very much also! Fun fact is that a lot of the sfx have been made recording my voice, and that includes shouts, dash, jump, and blood.

lukbebalduke 2019-05-03 13:58

@codekoto Tks! Yup, the idea of showing how many hearts you shall need in the next death is actually pretty clever, I can see that into the game with little effort. Thank you for the suggestion!

@adam-clayden Thank you very much folk! You've mentioned a good point, I really need to make something about the samurai's icon. I will try to make it clearer in the future or redesign this mechanic entirely. Either way, I do appreciate yout comments on the game :D

@mateusboga Thank you for the feedback! You can be sure that I will rethink about this pits in the level design haha!

@black-potion Tks man!

lukbebalduke 2019-05-03 14:00

@drauthius Thank you! I'm glad you've liked the art style!

@akronsus haha great! Yup, I will think about how that game could expand in the future and see if can get more time to put into this project, but even if I don't, thank you very much for the comment!

@falak So, I guess that besides me you are the only one who actually made into the 100th heart?! Haha! Amazing man, thank you very much for playing and I'm glad you enjoyed the game!

@rayriver yup, thanks for the comment!

falak 2019-05-03 14:07

@lukbebalduke OH really?! Well it wasn't that hard... The longer dash making this game suprisingly harder.

johnnydalvi 2019-05-04 15:04

Awesome entry, very polished and I love the concept, I just missed a bit of antecipation to the enemy's attack, which felt a bit unfair when I got killed.

anion-z 2019-05-04 15:21

I got most fun from this game then from any other I played yet! Considering its a compo game its an amazing entry! Idea with enemies only killed on stains and the movement feels very responsive and great, I was surprised to see upgrade menu after death, suits the theme well and looks great too.

I think option skip the dialogue after death or speed the text up on click would be great its too slow right now.

Unfortunately I couldnt reach 100 hearts because the game did not open fullscreen and I whenever I clicked its borders it would automatically fold, which was very annoying. Maybe adding a fullscreen toggle would work? Apart that the game feel is really great, and for a game made in 2 days by a single person its just that amazing, I adore those effects and sounds when I kill someone!

nippaaah 2019-05-04 16:30

Really cool game! The graphics look great and it feels really good to play! The afterlife surprised me bc yes, i did think that was it :D good job!

geist-191 2019-05-04 16:31

I really liked the graphics and feeling of the game! If I had to say a thing that bugged me the most it would be, that you can not skip text. Really great game with some interesting "painter-feeling" to it :)!

wubbaduck 2019-05-04 19:40

This was a blast! I kept playing it for way too long. Love the art and the die to upgrade system. The biggest criticism I have is that I kept losing the cursor against the background. I'd recommend making it contrast a little more. Even just a white outline would really help. Well done

fusionnist 2019-05-04 21:13

Awesome game! Nearly beat it without any upgrades, I'll have to give another shot at that tomorrow. The pits are particularly punishing, I have this bad habit of dashing into them you see... @anion-z , @nippaaah pressing "escape" skips dialogues for me. I do agree that it should be indicated in-game, as it really helps stay in the action. Took me a few times to understand that respawn costs were going up at each death. The music, sounds and feel to the game are spot-on! It doesn't get boring quickly, I can tell you that. Cheers!

levidsmith 2019-05-05 02:22

Submitting post compo versions as your entry is cheating.

firepit-games 2019-05-06 01:53

Very good game. Combat is very smooth and satisfying. Art and sound is awesome.

lukbebalduke 2019-05-06 03:53

@johnnydalvi Thank you for the comment, I definitely agree about the anticipation aspect, if I get to touch this project again in the future that's surely something I'm going to make clearer.

@anion-z Thank you very much for the feedback! When I was designing the afterlife part of the game, I intentionally added a Game Over screen before that in order to create a surprise effect, and I am always glad that it worked!

Also, I will make sure to change the way the mouse is working right now in the game, and also make sure to explain how dialogues could be skipped ;)

@nippaaah Cool! Thank you for the comment ;)

@geist-191 I'm Yup, I can see that the lack of information about how to skip texts is an issue. I shall work on that. Thanks for the feedback!

lukbebalduke 2019-05-06 03:58

@wubbaduck Hmm, interesting feedback, I have not read that before. I will make sure to think about design solutions for the problem of seeing the cursor clearer in the screen! Thank you very much for the comment :D

@fusionnist Thanks for the message! Great to see your feedback! And yeah, I should fix these pits in a future update of the game, thank you very much for also pointing that out :)

@levidsmith I see your point, I've changed the text to make it clearer for everyone who's landing on this page. Thank you for highlighting that out, I am really sorry that apparently, the original version was not distinct enough from the version 1.0.0.2

@firepit-games Tks!

mika-la-grand 2019-05-06 14:27

Great game! Some enemies had a little waterdrop icon near them and I didn't understand why I couldn't kill them. From what I can gather, this means that you can only kill them while on blood area's. It's a cool idea, but I would change it so that they sometimes block your attack, because otherwise it just becomes too complicated. The kill counter was sometimes hard to see, because it's the same colour as the platforms. I was also wondering if you keep the abilities that you purchase after you die again or if they only apply for one round after you buy them.

acactus 2019-05-06 20:04

This was a very well designed game. much smoother than most LD games I've run into. great job on the graphics!

secretpocketcat 2019-05-06 22:23

This all was done in 2 days? That's downright nuts. The animations are stellar, the music is super fitting and the whle thing is just oozing style. I actually don't like freeze frames very much, but here its used to perfection.

The only thing I'm not crazy about are those damned pits. It's enough to get instakilled by the enemies, I don't need to my inability to avoid holes as a threat. (Which is actually made worse by the dash length upgrade). I'd have also liked if the hearts carried over - wasting 50 hearts feels a bit frustrating.

Have I mentioned how much I love this? 'cause I do. My hats off to you, dear sir (and I don't wear hats, so I'll need to get some just to do so). (Sorry if I'm rambling, I haven't slept in 2 days  ).

the-blue-hatted 2019-05-09 22:17

One of the best games I've played!, It's so satisfying ,and only made in 2 days? The graphics are so good, and the sound too! Great game!

ivan-garcia-filho 2019-05-11 17:45

Awesome graphics, and visual effects, the feedback is juicy and pleasant... there's a lack of ambience sounds and you could make one for the main scene and the other for the underwaorld... there's also a lack of footsteps and some sfx from your enemies like the shaking armor of the samurai...

I don't know if the jump is something useful at all, i just opted for dashing all the time, even to reach the platforms... i think you could completely remove the jump feature unless you add more to It ...

The music is amazing and adds tension to the fight... i think that you could enhance the juicenesss of opponents death just by adding a few more blood/fluid splashs, a bit of variation to their screams and a bit of echoes/reverberation to increase the drama and exaggerate the feedback...

ddrkirbyisq 2019-05-15 09:00

You might want to put the ESC to skip instruction in your game description? It seems to be a common discoverability issue based on the above comments.

I would echo @secretpocketcat's comment about the pits. I had no problem getting those 50 kills but any miscalibrated dash to either side of the screen from center stage results in falling to your death and that seems a bit antithetical to the rest of your mechanics. I died to those pits more than any enemy so none of the enemies actually felt nearly as threatening! Perhaps I just need to "git gud" and restrict my dash angles but again that seem a bit counter to the feel of the game IMHO. I'd rather have harder, faster, and more intense enemies rather than those pits!

Despite that, this was definitely pretty cool. Good job :)

alex-adedge 2019-05-19 02:18

Really great game all across the board. Loved the gameplay mechanics, when you get a solid run going you really feel like a ninja and chaining together kills was great. Good upgrades as well, altho I wasnt so keen on the longer slice upgrade, since most of my deaths involved jumping down holes. The only thing I felt was lacking was a random spawning of enemies to keep it different each time, but it works without that too so not a huge issue. But overall, really good work!
