Nice! I love the artstyle, reminds me of Cave Story and the sprite animation is spot on. The music is subtle but calming to listen. I got stuck at the bit in the second screenshot and I am not too sure how to continue the game from there. Overall good work!

kbf123 2018-12-03 04:58

Wow! Great concept! I love the idea of either giving up your platforming ability or health to progress. And that ending was nice.

A bit short, but really good! :)

fullmontis 2018-12-03 12:01

@static-ddq Thank you! I'm glad you cite Cave Story cause it was a big influence on the visual style and platforming.

In the second screen you have to follow the arrows to continue even if you will get hurt  That's the way I interpreted the theme, and I'm not sure if it is confusing. You can check the gif I added to see if it helps.

@kbf123 Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. I got a little caught in the end so I couldn't make it much longer unfortunately, so I tried to polish what I had done.

gevernus 2018-12-03 12:50

Its good art and good mechanics. I like it

august1413 2018-12-03 13:09

Really liked the game! Very good controls and the idea was nice. Also graphics, textures and so were very polished looking!

morriss 2018-12-03 13:14

very like your style

Hate the invisible wall, will encounter

syrapt0r 2018-12-03 14:22

Amazing art style, nice and subtle music. Really enjoyed it :D

sapphiris 2018-12-03 20:22

Lovely graphics, and the music is very relaxing. Congrats

badosz 2018-12-03 20:52

Graphics are so cool! Gameplay was nice too! Love that idea

daruudaruu 2018-12-03 21:02

Loved the art and the idea. Consider applying a 'force back' motion when you're hurt!

ekin 2018-12-03 21:13

i loved it! art and the idea is wonderful. :>>>>

shahroz-khan 2018-12-03 21:17

Really like the soundtrack and the level design! The audio and the graphics gives it a Yume Nikki like aesthethic.

andrew-garcia 2018-12-03 22:11

Beautiful pixel art, love the palette and style. Good level design and great ambience! Glad to have played it!

lontrus 2018-12-03 22:26

Really liked this one: solid art, solid audio, solid gameplay. I took a while to realize how the jump mechanic really worked, but when I found out it felt wonderful. I also liked the choices when sacrificing to the next screen. Extra challenges for more health is pretty cool too.

Missed the restart button thought, not only because it breaks the flow, but also because interrupts that beautiful music that takes a while to start playing again (at least on my computer).

tomcat94 2018-12-04 03:14

I liked it! The level design was really good. I especially like how each sacrificed part changes how you play the following level as you progress. The music fit the tone really well, and the platforming mechanics were rock solid. Congratulations on finishing in time for compo, good luck!

walterp 2018-12-04 04:21

Great art, reminiscent of cave story. Love the choices you put in the design as you play. Keep up the good work

matt-fabius 2018-12-04 05:17

Good game! I like the art style and the sound design's pretty good too. I appreciated how you executed on the tutorial but it was hard to figure out the one that was trying to explain the mechanic of jumping in midair. The mechanic of sacrificing a heart or taking a handicap was very clever and a good use of theme. I'd love to see that concept further explored if you continue working on this post-jam. The level design was good in terms of progressively introducing more difficult concepts, but I felt it was designed in such a way that I was always banging the player character's head on things every time I jumped which makes the "feel" of the game not as good as it could be. That said, you nailed the jumping physics itself: not heavy, not floaty. Great work!

purrseus 2018-12-04 05:41

I love the subtleness of the tutorial! Everything was instantly clear without breaking immersion. And speaking of that - I'm really impressed by the atmosphere! Starting with the title screen you don't really think about and an ending that wraps that up perfectly. Nice job!

valden 2018-12-04 09:04

Interesting twist on the platformer formula. It's kinda short however, and the level design can quickly get frustrating because you keep bonking your head on the ceiling or hitting walls. The game has a nice art style, and it's a good submission overall !

notlivingpool 2018-12-04 10:15

It was really fun to play and required both skill and strategy, I think that it ended too quickly, and the description of your perspective of what "sacrifice" means in this game didn't really translate into the game.

isaque-picao-sanches 2018-12-04 11:04

you killed it with the mood / palette - congratz

erendelous 2018-12-04 11:04

Great game! It is fun to play, the artworks is amazing, and, as for me, it is not very easy (good), but, maybe, there should be some BG soundtrack:)

jeroenpx 2018-12-04 12:05

Cool concept and fun game. Nice sound effects and graphics. I agree with @matt-fabius about the roof though. When playing it was very hard to avoid hitting the roof...

fullmontis 2018-12-04 12:19

@erendelous there is a soundtrack  Maybe you were not using Firefox or Chrome? It tends to have problems with others browsers.

@isaque-picao-sanches @purrseus @walterp @tomcat94 @andrew-garcia @shahroz-khan @ekin @badosz @sapphiris @syrapt0r @august1413 @gevernus Thank you, I'm glad you liked it!

@notlivingpool @lontrus @daruudaruu @morriss Thanks for the suggestions, I will keep them in mind for the postjam version.

@jeroenpx @matt-fabius @valden The bumping on the ceiling is not a bug, it's a feature  I'm not sure if you noticed or if you're referencing something else but you can drop off a ledge and still jump once, this allows to get the first heart for example. I added a gif to show how it should be done. Unless you'referencing it more in general, in which case I should look more into it because technically you should be able to control the jump height by how much you press space.

torn 2018-12-04 12:44

Although the game was short, the level design was nice. I enjoyed getting the extra hearts at places. Audio was a very quiet, but otherwise pretty good. Graphics were the strongest part. I'm quite a fan of such an art style. The jumping was a bit floaty (but I understand that that's kind of how it is with an adjustable jump height). And although the sacrifice mechanic and the element of choice were nice, it was basically always a better choice to give up a heart.

fenderbate 2018-12-04 12:51

I didn't know what to do and quickly got bored of it, but al teast it looks good

spierek 2018-12-04 13:09

Very solid, really enjoyed finding hidden hearts.

arzi 2018-12-04 13:44

I really liked the art style and the mood! It was a bit difficult, but otherwise a solid platformer.

neon-glass 2018-12-04 14:47

A neat concept. While I did have a lot of troubles with jumping around bushes - pretty much any heart behind those wasn't worth it for me - I'd definitely want to see more, especially in the direction of expanding the "consequences" aspect. I.e. one can't see the platforms over a deadly pit, so one is forced to take another path completely.

falak 2018-12-04 16:24

I love idea to sacrifice your body part. :eye: :footprints: I would like to see that mechanic in full game. Lacking of restart button is really annoying becouse game is quite hard, but i understandt your deadline problem. (every one have this XD) Good Luck.

noa-calice 2018-12-04 16:39

This was a very nice little game :) ! Great atmopshere, and I really liked the sound effects and music ! It's just a shame you didn't have a time to add a restart option, because I must admit having to reload the page and re-do everything is annoying :/ Oh well, still solid jam entry !

shweep 2018-12-04 18:36

A nice little game. I didn't really understand at first why you can take either damage or lose an ability. But it made more sense with the ending. I like that the section with the reduced jump is difficult in different ways (too high of a jump as bad as having too low of a jump). I feel like some optional health upgrades felt redundant. If you lose hearts on just the mandatory jumps it seems even harder to get the extra hearts and get out without losing it anyway.

Would have been nice to have checkpoints and some of the controls felt a bit sluggish. but overall I liked it. The atmosphere and the mood brings it together.

ryan-brenner 2018-12-04 20:18

Really cute game with a great aesthetic. I liked the way that you have a choice of whether you want to lose an ability/stat, or take damage. I did realize that if you took damage going into a screen, then went back to the previous screen using the other exit (where you would have lost some of your eyesight, for example), you would still lose the ability, effectively making you sacrifice both things :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:. Great job!

jimbly 2018-12-05 00:30

I was unable to get any further than losing my vision :(, the platforming was a bit too difficult to me, would have loved to see how it progressed!

Loved the art and mood though.

Edit: Played it one more time, lost 3 health trying to do one jump, but managed to make it to the end, nice!

papabirb 2018-12-05 02:37

Love the art and sound! A little bit difficult to control the jumps accurately since the height depends on how long you hold the key it seems, which meant it became a bit too difficult for me after losing a leg. My only comment would be that there needs to be some sort of exposition or otherwise more threatening spike for the orange seaweed-brambles of doom, as they're visually very non-threatening other than that they're a complimentary color to the rest of the palette and thus stand out as "other". Great work though, I enjoyed it!

mtanton 2018-12-05 03:37

Neat game! The falling and jumping mid-fall took a minute to figure out. I really liked the mood/style. Good job!

tweedle 2018-12-05 07:41

very difficult, mood wins out here for me - dang bushes, would be cool if they were destroyed after they hurt the player

saering 2018-12-06 09:41

Too hard in my opinion, but overall it was pretty good! You should have implemented a restart function, I know you said you didn't have time but it's too important in such a game. Otherwise, I love the graphics and the atmosphere!

gri-bel 2018-12-06 10:12

Amazing game with cool graphics!)

shiqichuan 2018-12-06 16:01

Nice! It's emotional when you have to hurt the cute girl, the choices are difficult to make!

adventureislands 2018-12-06 16:05

Cute game. The pixel art and colors were nice. You had some good ideas there, sacrifice health or parts of you to move forward, but they could have been utilized more if the game was little longer. Most of the health pickups were not worth it to get because of the very unforgiving collision boxes of the bushes. Nice work with the game though, I could see this being expanded to a bigger game.

trevor-hayes 2018-12-08 07:19

I love the vibe you created with the music and art :)

ryjcio 2018-12-25 19:42

Hey man, very nice idea! I love style of an art: very simple, but I see you put the effort to the overall look and feel.

Anyway I enjoyed the gameplay just a little, because I think the idea wasn't fully present in the jam version.

Keep rocking man!

ddrkirbyisq 2018-12-25 19:45

Rated the jam version, but also played the post-jam version. The mid-air jump was quite unintuitive and took a while for me to discover -- you sort of addressed that in the post-jam version.

I love the story illustrations and rhymes that you added in the post-jam version. I couldn't get the good ending though, it's really easy to slip up and miss a tight jump timing. I think if the checkpoints didn't cost life, it would be a lot more feasible. I know the idea is that the checkpoints are supposed to be a tradeoff, but that means if you are going for the good ending it means you are incentivized to not use any of them, which in turn means that if you ever mess up a screen or two it's all over.

In the compo version as well, it was quite easy to use a checkpoint with little health remaining and find myself locked into an almost impossible situation.

For anyone else playing -- the volume of the music and sound was quite soft, so if you don't hear it, maybe just try turning the volume up!

shubart 2018-12-25 22:22

Well realized game. Thank you

corbak 2018-12-26 22:29

Really cute little game. Enjoyed the general aspect and the polishing of it. Well done :)

kamekai 2018-12-27 00:43

The up and down arrows seem to cause my page to scroll up and down on Firefox. You might have to add some code to prevent that. Otherwise, fun game with a good atmosphere. Had a little Cave Story vibe going aesthetically.

inkie-inc 2018-12-27 16:25

Wow, I really like what you came up with here! It's really interesting.

sebastianscaini 2018-12-30 14:08

A really solid entry! The gameplay is very interesting and the platforming feels really nice.

The sound and art make for a great mood!

I really liked this one!

nnnikki 2018-12-31 18:57

I didn't have much to think about.. just 5 stars in every category. Probably the perfect LD43 game. This could easily become a full game, if you just expanded it a bit.
