Fun game! I got up to 1:20. I think the torches should be a bit stronger.

erebus 2018-12-05 05:26

Great job! Thanks for bringing it by the stream!

drevilbrain 2018-12-05 05:39

The game currently is far too easy to just cheese by spamming axes everywhere. But regardless, that still makes the small ents an issue that can really only be reliably dealt with by using torches. It's a pretty alright thing all things considered.

great-bobleny 2018-12-05 07:11

The graphics are really fantastic, what did you use to make them?

I really like the game play, but I wish there was a little more to do.

gao-ming 2018-12-05 07:57

Very fun. Great work!

stratoskakalis 2018-12-05 09:03

God damn I played this for way longer than I thought I would. Extremely fun and satisfying when you kill those weird trees! Great entry!

m3rcurial92 2018-12-05 09:56

Loved the graphic style!

jfraser314 2018-12-05 15:55

Cool game. I really like the lighting effects used. I feel like it could totally be part of a larger game.

ncadieux 2018-12-05 22:34

Thanks everyone for the great comments and feedback!! I have taken your comments into consideration and made the following changes: 1. Torch hit boxes have been doubled to feel more impactful. 2. Number of torches to start have been reduced to 5, this promotes exploration to find chests for more torches. 3. Torch lighting is significantly reduced as you use them, this makes the sacrifice of torches a harder decision than before.

Once again I really appreciate everyone's comments and suggestions, it means alot to know other people are enjoying a game we created.

pandanym 2018-12-06 05:33

God damn this is hardcore ! I really enjoyed myself, thanks for that. The main character's animations are nice, and the axe throw is actually pretty enjoyable ^^ The only problem is that the ents blend too much in their environment, sometimes one just pops out a tree and the animation to use the torch is slightly longer that the ent attack animation, getting you killed. Very good entry, thank you !

aj-jones 2018-12-06 05:37

@pandanym thanks for checking it out! Appreciate the feedback! What was your high score?

legavroche 2018-12-06 05:47

Good job with the gameplay and art! I have some feedback in regards to the game difficulty though. I felt that the small ents were really difficult to see and hit in comparison to the large ents. The large ents also die with one shot like the small ents, so they're much easier as an enemy type. Maybe they can be given more health and balanced to be much slower. I think doing so will provide more diversity in the gameplay and a sort of risk reward mechanic of trying to delay engaging the large ents by running away but the longer you keep them alive, the more difficult it'll be to defeat an entire group. I also would've liked to see the ents' movement take into account the trees as it was hard to predict where they were coming from since they could walk through trees. Overall, this was a great entry and I hope this feedback helps in your post-jam version!

wowbagger 2018-12-06 05:51

Fun game, looks really cool. The shadows look really cool. Tree hit boxes are a little wonky. Would have been nice to have the enemies have collisions with the trees. Also in the web browser version it seemed like there was a bug where I could not do key inputs and mouse inputs at the same time. Sometimes my movement would get locked in one direction. If you wanted to keep developing this it would be easy to add some objectives that you needed to go to, some bosses, or some new terrain elements.

vlad-ilisan 2018-12-06 06:02

I am Groot!

pandanym 2018-12-06 06:33

@aj-jones I did about 30 seconds, but I lost some inputs because of the webGL window

mortifix 2018-12-06 06:36

Wonderful game! Really fun and a nice artstyle. Same problem though with the webGL window, as the movements are a bit unresponsive.

mr-chocolatesalmon 2018-12-06 06:50

Good job! Really loved the mood and graphics. Had some weird bouncing when I was trying to walk past trees though

aj-jones 2018-12-06 06:56

@pandanym and @mortifix try the full screen, i've noticed alot of issues when movements would be carried off screen

pandanym 2018-12-06 06:59

@aj-jones Yeah that fixed it

norfma 2018-12-06 07:01

Hey there, played on WebGL version, the game is pretty fun, I survived for a minute and a few seconds. Actually died a bunch of times because the inputs get inverted at some point, no idea why.

purpledartfrog 2018-12-06 07:14

Great game - loved the balance of it - congrats

icxon 2018-12-06 07:27

The game feels great, despite my finger hurts now  And I can't imagine playing it 15-30 minutes in a row. Have you had any ideas how to expand the gameplay? E.g. more weapons, hero leveling, powerups, and etc?

Here is my playthrough (+ one bug found):

ncadieux 2018-12-06 07:33

Thanks icxon for the video! This is very helpful, seems like a race condition between our coroutine and main update thread. Ill look into it further and post a patch. So fun watching people play the game, thanks again!

**Update** After an hour or so of getting mauled by spawning 20 Ents around my starting position:

I was able to consistently reproduce the issue which eventually lead to finding the bug. Thanks for the help! New version uploaded.

aj-jones 2018-12-06 07:38

@norfma Try using the Fullscreen option, sometimes on itch, if your mouse goes out of the window, it can cause some weird input response.

gucio-miszcz 2018-12-06 08:04

What a nice game, had a lot fun playing it :) A little bit hard because of 1-hit death. Great sounds and graphics, none bugs found :)

adventureislands 2018-12-06 08:45

I got to 1:20, nice work on this game. At first I wasn't really sure if the torches very any good but they did save me from swarms couple of times. Good idea for a game and good execution. Nice graphics.

verbante 2018-12-06 09:08

Beutiful and very enjoyable. Got to 2 : 10. I beat you @adventureislands. And btw @advetureislands I played Persist like 200 times, it is one of my favourite games ever. I love the music, the story. i have it in my phone and play it occasionally still. Showed to my room mate yesterday he enjoyed it as well. It's such a chance we meet here. I'm thrilled.

ncadieux 2018-12-06 09:13

Yea sorry, must have been right when I was uploading a bug fix. It should be available now!

verbante 2018-12-06 09:29

@aj-jones @ncadieux 16 : 9 aspect ratio makes it more prefable to go to left or right. I think this is sorta but not one that is easy to change without SACRIFCING the visual stile. Nevertheless, making it even darker as the distance from fire increases can change this. I really like how the shadows and fire looks, it is so fun to wander the forest and axe ents! :D My game is also GREEN oriented if you wanna check out.

thiago-andre-as 2018-12-06 09:40

Nice game =) controls got well paced, not too fast nor too slow. Felt encouraged to explore the scenario walking around, maybe I could find something nice in the woods mhahaha

gronther 2018-12-06 16:36

Very well made. Solid animations and art as well as an interesting premise. Music and sound effects were a bit minimal, but that didn't get in the way of gameplay. Because the ent's movement speed is always slower than that of the player, it's rather easy to cheese the game by continuously moving in one direction, effectively halving the number of ents you have to kill. This did cause a buildup of ents offscreen which started to cause lag issues around the 4 minute mark, as well as practically removing the need to sacrifice your torch light, but I'll judge that in the spirit of the game. Other than that balancing issue, very solid entry. Good job!

peachtreeoath 2018-12-08 07:17

Really good twist on the formula! It made me think of traditional shmups with bomb clear mechanics, except now the bombs are tied to gameplay difficulty. Instead of just bombing every time you are near death, you kinda have to weigh the bomb vs losing visibility, brilliant. I think that really hits on the theme of sacrifice, and with your gameplay being as tight as it is, it really put the game high on my charts.

aj-jones 2018-12-08 18:58

@peachtreeoath thanks for the kind words!

gaming-night 2018-12-08 19:58

Better beard and better axe than kratos !!!! Very cool game here I had a lot of fun :)

egawag 2018-12-08 20:51

Awesome game! I loved the idea of ents attacking a lumberjack.

krunoslav 2018-12-08 20:51

Great game. I just wanted to survive to listed all the song :) I liked the light effects, and the gameplay is great. Congratulations.
