LD40 — The more you have, the worse it is

Puzzle Trubbles by rsim 2017-12-04T05:02:42Z

Difficult to aim from that perspective. Seemed like the best option was to aim at about a 45 degree angle and try to blast them as they circle around before they are over the barge.

@jason-kennedy What do you mean by colors? It is just black and white for me... Really hard / impossible to read the color overlays as a result.

Was the wrong version uploaded?

Fatigue Blade by Clayton Schuyler 2017-12-04T04:55:00Z

That was fun. Took a minute to figure out the deal with the short range. My 's' key sure did get a work out.

A game over message would have been nice, wasn't sure if it was over or I was stuck. I guess I still can't say for sure (I killed the square thing with the arms)...

I really like the sleeping purple guys who occasionally wake up and spit at you.

LD43 — Sacrifices must be made

Silent Whisper by FireSlash 2018-12-05T09:21:33Z

The mood and atmosphere of the game is great, do in no small part to the audio and impressive graphics.

I agree with Matank on all points.

At some point, I just got the same two events over and over again, with no chance to resupply. It really just felt like I was waiting to die.

Space Safe by MrTroy 2018-12-06T05:39:17Z

I disapprove of "unexpecteed bugs". That said, I didn't seem to run into any.

As everyone else said, I really like the audio and mood. I rarely felt the need to sacrifice the pills though; the gun seemed to handle them quite well. The only time it didn't was when I was too loaded down and couldn't out pace the harder ones.

Quite fun for how simple it is. I think I would have liked a stary backdrop or something to break up the endless see of grey.

Oh, and I really like the radar.

Ulti-MEME Sacrifice by LandoSystems 2018-12-05T06:46:16Z

This ranks as the funniest one I've played. Thanks.

I like how when you die you can just restart, that is a really nice touch.

A great arcade style game.

Graphics had me nervous but they really work for this game and the humor.

I wish I could play full screen (My mouse kept leaving the game) and I wish there was some different dialog between the cat and dog (I played through the first enemy the second time), but otherwise fantastic.

The Orion Trail by Archimagus 2018-12-15T04:23:48Z

I really love the warp sound. :D

Actually, I enjoyed all of the sounds. The graphics where really well done too.

I must have ran out of fuel, because I got a game over message right before the green bit, but it never said I won.

I wish the chance rolls where a little more explicit in their outcome. I had to look at my stats before and after to see what changed.

Also, the random options where a little too random. There were several times where I had some options that didn't make sense (-25 fuel, or -75 people, or -150 people [maybe more people consume more food/water?]).

Fun game, but a little too slow for me to keep trying for the end.

Escape of the Cheese Droid by dob 2018-12-03T23:48:34Z

No, don't leave! I need as many cheese bots as possible!

Just hard enough that I had to play it a few times, but no so hard that I didn't want to keep trying.

Santaur's Elf Cola by tweedle 2018-12-05T08:14:54Z

I agree with kambing on the traps being more frustrating than enjoyable. I think they just need to last a little longer.

It looks like you need to kill elves to generate money to buy traps to kill elves? Maybe I am doing it wrong, but I feel like most of them escape before I even have enough to place defenses.

Otherwise, amazing; Highest rated game yet!

Space Inhalers by boddiul 2018-12-03T22:45:25Z

Looks really cool though.

A Bird in Paradise by CptFinn 2018-12-04T04:33:27Z

Fun game. Very funny. Death is fun, watching the bird tumble down the volcano.

Plug: Reminds me a bit of my entry...

King's Wrath by svntax 2018-12-06T05:08:58Z

I played the web version with no issues. Sound worked fine.

I had to play it 4 times before I beat it. Trying not to let the villages grow too much. Hard to tell when the tipping point is, but if it wouldn't be a challenge if there was a strong indicator.

Baldaquin 9 - I chose life by marcellus 2018-12-04T00:42:51Z

I finally made it past the first act, but couldn't get past the second. I was never good at those types of games.

Baldaquin 9 - I chose life by marcellus 2018-12-04T01:28:27Z

@marcellus I tried many times to get past the skate level. I made it to last jump a few times (I assume it was the last jump). The one where you have to jump through the opening in the vertical flames. For some reason I can't get the timing down, and I keep bumping into that last blue shelf.

hiJack by SecretPocketCat 2018-12-15T04:30:19Z

This was fun. I really liked hijacking stronger ships. I also really like how you could hijack the asteroids too.

hiJack by SecretPocketCat 2018-12-17T22:06:36Z

@secretpocketcat Sure, but I should preference with, I am not a fan of arcade style games; I prefer my games to have a beginning, middle, and end.

First, I would prefer a linear map. By that I mean I would like to be flying in a defined direction (e.g. left to right or bottom to top). This would give the illusion of progress and give the character more purpose (i.e. the character is going somewhere). Spitballing: Fast enemies may come up behind you, or you may fly through enemy strong holds with stationary weapons or maybe even shields that must be destroyed before progressing. If your ship is fast enough, you may be able to just dodge and fly past oncoming enemies.

Second, as someone who prefers strategy games, I would like the ship swapping to be more integral to the success of the game (or continuation in the case of an arcade style game). To start I would say, instead of your ship blowing up the moment you swap, it should just become an inert object maintaining its momentum. Again spitballing: If swapping was faster, you could swap into an asteroid, send it on a collision course with an enemy (to damage or distract them), and swap back to or into another vessel. Swapping into an asteroid may allow you to go undetected so long as you maintain the original trajectory (As long as you don't touch the controls, maybe it would just continue on its original trajectory). Likewise, you could do the same with an enemy ship, though it should probably be discovered after a short period.

Third, again as someone who prefers strategy games, I think it would be fun if the ships had more capabilities. Spitballing: One might have no weapons, but a hyper-drive that allows it to jump wherever you click (probably with a short cool down in between jumps). A command ship, which doesn't have weapons, but can command all ships in the vicinity to attack a particular target (If you can swap without being detected for a short time, you could swap in and target an enemy vessel or two before detection).

Fourth, well that's all that comes to mind at the moment. These suggestions are major changes, and that doesn't mean your game isn't fun as is (because it is), but you asked for some ideas... These ideas may make the game more fun for me, but awful for you and everyone else (assuming they make the game more fun at all). So I won't be upset or disappointed at all if you don't like these ideas or if you just want to go in a different direction.

Blob Time by sketchycode 2018-12-05T06:06:57Z

This is really cool. I like how you slowly dissolve, that's great. I like how the first couple of levels are just jumping around, then it introduces a door, then multiple doors, and slippery movement. It makes for a really nice ramp up.

As simple as the concept is, I think it is one of the best entries I've played.

I wish I could have played more, but I couldn't get past level 3. I need more granular control while in the air to get between the spikes. I'm not very good.

Path of (dis)abilities by yuriaicruz 2018-12-03T22:28:53Z

Interesting and well done. I was expecting the cards at the top to be in order, but they seem to be chosen randomly.

TechnoAnxiety by RomaRogov 2018-12-03T23:38:02Z

Gory indeed. Wish I could use space and arrow keys to jump and move though, I don't like the constant clicking. Though, I get that it was made for phones.

Good Job

TechnoAnxiety by RomaRogov 2018-12-04T00:05:08Z

@romarogov Nice! I got to a score of 10, I missed the 11th bomb. I was so excited to see the new bomb type...

Bokeh by arron-fowler 2018-12-14T17:33:13Z

I really like the graphics/atmosphere/mood and colors of the game. I also really like how they spin around each other when they collide (That is a really nice way to handle that problem).

Fading Memories by schmavery 2018-12-05T09:29:36Z

Very creative. For me the hardest part was trying to rearrange the pieces already on the board; there isn't enough room around the edges to get the pieces out of the way. Very tough.

Sacrifices must be made - Ludum Dare 43 by great-bobleny 2018-12-04T03:21:09Z

@dob Interesting. What browser were you using? It works for me in Firefox and Chrome. I have also had some friends play it, with no issues on their machines, but I don't know what browser/s they were using.

I did try it on my phone, that doesn't work well at all...

Sacrifices must be made - Ludum Dare 43 by great-bobleny 2018-12-05T01:49:53Z

@dk5000p Did you click the star on the Hovel? You also need to have a pig to get it. If you don't have a pig, and you click it, it will still make a baby sound. (Bug)

Same with pigs, you must have the corn, or you will waste the star.

Sacrifices must be made - Ludum Dare 43 by great-bobleny 2018-12-05T02:36:47Z

@dk5000p Yeah, they eat pigs... lol

I guess babies don't usually eat meat, but they grow up fast.

Sacrifices must be made - Ludum Dare 43 by great-bobleny 2018-12-05T08:39:41Z

@FireSlash That's funny, I was reading your comments on an unrelated game when you posted this...

The game is very much about sacrificing your population to appease the God. So the primary goal is to get a steady supply of humans to sacrifice, which makes it hard to keep your farms going.

What I found to work well for me is:

Place the three farms to start.

Then assign a farmer to the trees and the corn.

When the corn gets to 3, reassign him to the pig farm to collect your three pigs. (keep moving him back and forth between the two farms).

When you have enough wood (5) to build a church, do that next. (You will likely have to do some pig sacrifices before you can grow your population)

Then place a hovel.

Each time you "hatch" (dob) a new baby, sacrifice him.

Now you should be able to keep your plague ticks under control.

Then build a couple more hovels to have a steady supply of humans to sacrifice.

Once you have about 3 hovels, you should have a frequent enough supply of humans to both sacrifice and to grow your farms.

Sacrifices must be made - Ludum Dare 43 by great-bobleny 2018-12-09T21:32:59Z

@justalocalhero Wow, you are the first person to comment on the timers. There is a bug causing the timer to run away and start executing as often as possible. I haven't worked out the problem yet...

When I get a bit of time, I intend to fix this bug and many of playability issues.

Sacrifices must be made - Ludum Dare 43 by great-bobleny 2018-12-10T09:38:16Z

@kruemelkeksfan It is not a bug. Each time an event tick (top right bar) occurs, your citizens will each eat 1 pig. If there are not enough pigs, they die.

This ended up being a bad way of forcing you to use pigs.

Thank you all for your honest feed back. I have finally gotten around to creating a post release which I think addresses most of the problems.

If you have the inclination and time, please give it a try and tell me what you think. I have some ideas that could turn it into a mini 4x or city sim game.

Remember, this is a post release, please do not update your rating.

R4 is meant to be the version I would have created if I had another 24-48 hours. The win condition may be the exception (when I thought of the game Friday night, I was assuming there wouldn't be a win condition).

* Tweaked the audio and graphics; hopefully they are better...

* Added audio controls.

* Added difficulty levels.

* Added a win condition.

* Fixed runaway timers.

* Enhanced people management.

* Made it clear what resources each building is lacking.

* Wood is now required to produce a baby.

Sacrifices must be made - Ludum Dare 43 by great-bobleny 2018-12-18T22:45:29Z

@secretpocketcat

Thank you for the feedback. Mobile was what I was thinking when I created it. When I have the time, I would like to implement some other ideas I have to see how they work out.

I actually shortened the baby cry in R4 because it was so annoying... lol

What I never got around to in the Jam version, was making wood more relevant. So the R4 hovels have a chimney on them for burning wood to keep the babies warm.

I was wondering if anyone would notice the long delay at the end of the music. There is only the one song, so I wanted a delay to break it up.

In R4, I separated the building ticks and the event ticks. This made it easier to balance the game with different difficulty levels. The building ticks are a constant 5 seconds on all difficulties. On medium, there are about 12 event ticks per event, and they start at a 35 second interval decreasing to a minimum of 25 seconds over a period of about 10 minutes.

Your right though, I think R4 would be more fun if the building ticks also sped up, as the game progressed. This would have been much more difficult to balance though.

If I do a mobile game, it will use a grid or predefined plots.

I never considered making the workers more personable. That could have been fun, but there is no way I would have had time for that...

I like the idea of training them, as opposed to just being born with traits like most other games implement.

ImminENT Danger by Ncadieux 2018-12-05T07:11:12Z

The graphics are really fantastic, what did you use to make them?

I really like the game play, but I wish there was a little more to do.

Missing Parts by radow 2018-12-06T06:13:23Z

The whole thing was really fantastic, the art, the audio, the mood, your use of the theme, and it was even amusing. It would have been funnier, to me anyways, had the boss just shoved the robot into the scrap heap or inferno.

I love puzzle games, please make more of this game.

Sacrifice to the Flames by Kovakomes 2018-12-15T03:49:50Z

Once I figured out what was going on, I just looked for as much green text on the card as I could find. That seemed to work out.

This game is a little weird.

Birds in Space by PopDaddyGames 2018-12-05T07:53:45Z

I didn't play it, sorry. I only play browser based ones (easier to just sandbox the browser).

I just wanted to comment on the artwork, it is supper impressive. Anthony is clearly an excellent artist.

BOBA by BMOPAPA 2018-12-05T09:43:21Z

Those are some truly disgusting creatures you have created....

Very funny, and disgusting. I couldn't get past the heart level with the two straws. I would end up with two bobas left at the bottom I couldn't get into to air stream.

P.S. Never heard of Bubble Tea / bobas...

Sacrifice Society by SirMichel 2018-12-06T04:48:06Z

I don't understand how to play the game...

Once I select a villager to go into the dungeon, how do I get back out?

Sacrifice Society by SirMichel 2018-12-06T07:11:00Z

@sky-coding I assumed once you killed the boss, the game was over. I died the first time I fought him. So I thought you had to go in, level up, then come out and sacrifice yourself to level everyone else up. By doing that enough times, you would end up with a super strong warrior.

I made it to level 9. Unfortunately, after each boss fight, because my HP was too low to kill another, I had to just sacrifice myself so I could use the level 1ish character that spawned. I know one of my characters healed while I was in the dungeon, but I couldn't figure out how to do it again.

It wasn't quite what I thought it was, but it was still a fun game. I was really hoping the cards you picked up were like abilities that would be transferred to everyone else in the village upon sacrifice.

For some reason, I couldn't get the episode, "Learning Curve" from SG-1 out of my head...

Sacrifice Society by SirMichel 2018-12-06T18:09:25Z

@sirmichel Yes he (playing the odds) did. However, I understood the demon detector when I first played; it is a pretty simple feature and the description under "controls" does an adequate job of explaining it.

My confusion was do to my misunderstanding of what happens when you defeat the demon. I thought it was the end of the game, not the end of a level.

Dark Villagers by AwiX 2018-12-07T22:28:43Z

Good atmosphere and art. The whole theme is well done. I would have liked an easy mode.

Because you can choose what you give up, it makes me want to play again, but with different abilities for each level.

Pull Yourself Together by Brevitius 2018-12-04T05:09:59Z

Checkpoints were VERY appreciated. I too didn't realize there were more parts until I escaped without them all.

I think I missed the easter egg. :(

There appears to be two ways to escape, but I couldn't get back to the first one where you fly strait up to escape. I kept hitting the spikes (with the legs he is a bit jumpy).

Oh, maybe the easter egg was in the room before you escape completed? I took an extra one with me. That was fun.

Memento Morty by okuar 2018-12-04T03:15:54Z

I really enjoyed that.

I wish there were more levels. That fourth one was satisfyingly difficult. :)

A Man and a Dog by YYZ 2018-12-15T02:46:50Z

I kept getting stuck in those bent over dead trees. I think because of the angle of the map and movement.

Otherwise, I really liked the black and white 3D graphics. The change in the color at the end was really neat too.
