LD38 — A Small World

Troll Castle by berkano 2017-05-03T08:37:30Z

As others said before, game might appear to be little difficult when you stare at this long description, but after a while you get it all. Programmer Art looks nice in a game about trolls, so i can't say anything bad about it. There's small bug, when troll with swim ring dies in a mine, his swim ring stays on top of a mine. Nice game, especially for a compo one. Also props for using something that's not Unity d;

Cottage by Druid 2017-05-02T15:08:28Z

Let's get to it: - "a" key is NOT standard way to confirm action. Posting controls here is good idea (a REALLY good one), especially when you use something else than "enter". - Altair is about 17 lightyears from earth, so getting there with flower and bone is pretty impossible. - Missing spaces in text? - I guess this game allows instantaneous travel using some kind of altar. Long story short, i suppose i managed to visit Altair with bone and flower d;

Game looks nice, but it is really short. Why does match burn while game is paused (in equipment)? Or is it just my mistake to think it was paused?

They Dance With Asteroids by TurnWolf 2017-05-09T18:24:09Z

I think previous comments describe bad parts of this game. Too fast and difficult to understand which element does what. With panomaric screen it's unfair if elements come from top or bottom, as there's less time to respond, but maybe that was the plan. Game looks nice, but surely would look better if I knew how my actions affect the planet. Overall, nice idea, but execution could be better. Maybe next version?

Communitas by hbocao 2017-05-09T19:02:29Z

...I've spent too long trying to make "XD" with road in city #4...

World Requires by phaze0 2017-05-02T18:52:02Z

Maybe if not for the 'recycle' function this game would be better - player would know that there IS correct solution using available pieces. I had some minor troubles with picking tile I wanted and placing it where I wanted.

Submersible by kleinzach 2017-05-03T08:09:30Z

This game feels like some kind of train simulator, mostly due to steering. I think it would be even more climatic if you changed some buttons to levers, allowed to look around whole submarine and made it feel more claustrophobic, just like real ones (at least i think that's how they should feel). Some ambient sounds would be nice, engine, water flowing around and so on. Graphics is not on Crysis levels, but it looks nice. As I said before, ship doesn't really give you feeling like you're in submarine. If you continue your work, then this game can become something really nice.

Zombies In Space by JesseyCool 2017-05-02T09:46:49Z

Time to comment - with many things I agree with what @qzqxq said. - Idea o vending machine is interesting (and how it has planet with vending machine with planet with ... on top of it on top of it). - Even with help of plasma grenade i couldn't keep on top of rocket/vending machine. - Grenade is weird, it's more useful as one-hit-kill weapon than something that kills multiple enemies. - Headshots don't seem to be effective, even though zombies become their headless variants. - Some zombies of the same type die with one hit from shotgun, others need 4 shots. Maybe some feedback after hitting would be nice (zombie yelling or -1hp particle). - Too repetitive, i got bored about the same time as @qzqxq, and arrow was constantly pointing down - underground zombies? - Graphics - well, it has graphics, little blocky, but maybe it's just case of 'programmer art'. It's clean, so you know what's going on screen. - Title looks like movie from '40s or WordArts from '00s d;

Game's working, you can shoot zombies, no bugs found. If anything, then escape velocity for a planet of this size is too high d;

Zombies In Space by JesseyCool 2017-05-02T12:41:12Z

@jesseycool - When someone loses their head, I'd rather expect them to stop moving, rather than continue running after me (except for chickens). As for the multiplier, that's exactly what I meant - no feedback after hitting enemy. I started to wonder if bullets passed through enemies (standard bug in many games, position+=speed*timestep when speed is too large object passes through walls). At least, if I decide to try it again (and climb that rocket) I'll know there's reason to aim at their heads d;

Little Remains by nilead 2017-05-09T18:49:46Z

Graphics are nice, really nice. Background images fit nicely with them, but... Well, steering and camera movement make this game difficult to play. I had no idea where i could go, and a few times i found myself in places where I didn't expect I could go. It's more of a "find object hidden offscreen" than adventure game.

Slot Racer by Miotis 2017-05-02T09:18:00Z

Weeeeell. Table this big hardly counts as 'small world', but if we assume you meant RC car, then you pass d; - Reminds me of Re-Volt - Checkpoints - you can skip large parts of track (eg. big U turn close to the end of lap) and go straight to next checkpoint - put them more often, create many invisible checkpoints or add obstacles. - Physics of car - if someone expects realism then it's not there, but for a car with immobile wheels then it handles really well d; - I got stuck in one of the banners. - Good thing that you made walls around the table, so car can't go too far away, but I really haven't seen a table like that. - Electric engines don't sound like that :smirk:

Looks like it's your first racing game - nothing special, but i hope your next games will be better.

Squadaloo World Cup by johanw123 2017-05-03T09:12:56Z

When playing with matchmaker the ball felt really laggy, but maybe expecting lag compensation in game made in few days is too much. Due to lags I can't say anything else about gameplay, especially when my opponent was standing still in one place. I guess he couldn't stand stares of arbiters. Game is colorful and looks nice, but that's to be expected from Unity.

SGFactory by iossif 2017-05-02T18:40:59Z

I don't know if that was deliberate, but scrolling effect after picking the tile is distracting. Maybe first levels should be easier? More time to get hang of the game mechanics and goal? At first I didn't know whether it is tetris-like, match four or something else. Turns out i just had to move tiles from bottom to game area as fast as possible, trying to fit them nicely wasn't necessary.

Small World (some assembly required) by benjim 2017-05-02T11:55:55Z

I spent too much time on this. It took me some time to get what was the goal of this game. - Finding combinations of elements is time consuming, yet I wanted to keep searching. If only controls were better (like shortcuts on keyboard). - I managed to stop when I couldn't find combinations for desert, jungle, icecap and small world.

Well, nothing special, but it can keep you occupied for a while.

Ant Runner by unit684 2017-05-09T18:03:35Z

Shooting should be limited somehow, as best strategy is just mashing mouse button, and that limits gameplay to jumping over rivers. Models look nice, but I think there should be more rules governing level generation, eg. branches spawn upwards, and grass level is constant. It felt really weird when i saw branches going underground. Maybe you could also take a look at this cutoff effect, maybe it would be better if it didn't affect leafs under ant's feet.

Pale Blue Dot by SneakyDeagle 2017-05-03T07:46:02Z

Mismatch between shadows on planets and sun's position bothered me more than i thought it would. I don't think you can lose this 'game', so why not remove completly the part with dodging the asteroids? Instead you could make more 'artistic' game, with different path through the Solar System, with more time spent on each planet, maybe even including their moons?

Retro Rabbit by wtoa 2017-05-02T13:15:09Z

Looks like Pac-Man mixed with Snake. Retro-like wireframe models look nice. It's nice that you thought about showing that munch-mode is going to end. I didn't last that long, but i guess that after many carrots rabbit is large enough that it becomes a planet, and planet becomes single rock?

The last mass of universe by Stellary 2017-05-02T08:56:10Z

First game i rate and it's similar to the one i made, huh? So, let's start: - Unskippable intro - WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT? >: - I won't comment on language, as most likely I'm also making lots of mistakes. - Whether you win or lose seems to heavily depend on how many cities you get when level is created. - Graphics looks nice, but cities don't really match style of other tiles. That's about it. Game is short (about 1 minute?) and it's not likely that someone will want to replay it, but at least you enjoyed making it and learned something new.

On a side note, why does this game require 350MB of HDD memory...?

Middle by josemachado 2017-05-02T14:48:49Z

Awww, spoiler. Story like that can be used to create something nice, so why not go away from simple puzzles and make adventure game?

Middle by josemachado 2017-05-02T17:35:57Z

@josemachado: Well, that's how compos and jams are, no time for anything, but that doesn't mean you can't work on your game now d;

Burgloiree by MetalCasting 2017-05-02T14:40:33Z

Using Unity to make text based game - if someone ever wanted to define what "Overkill" is, then he would probably say something like that.

There is one thing this game needs - scrollback. I'm not a fan of this kind of games, but I don't get why with crowbar in my pocket i couldn't get to chapel, or why I couldn't use lighter and candle/lamp to visit dark rooms.

I wasn't able to feel the theme of the jam here, except for guards talking about it. Looking at screenshots it seems that there is lot of text to be read, but story isn't really interesting. Even after I named myself "my son".

Stop CO2 by cremmy 2017-05-02T15:29:53Z

@oxrock - We expected that this game would be difficult to play because of the controls and resources. Making the movie may be helpful, we'll think about it.

@wtoa, @holgk - Just SDL2 (+image +mixer) and C++, no hidden catch, no strings attached.

@tombishopspg - Seems like you ran out of coal.

I'll try to rewrite "how to play" part of the description.

Stop CO2 by cremmy 2017-05-15T09:19:17Z

Thanks for comments. I see now that video or in-game tutorial is a must in game with such twisted mechanics.

MonsterWithin by Sycmasters 2017-05-02T10:08:38Z

Interesting use of theme. I got stuck in third level, when waiting for energy to come back started to get boring. - Even though game suggests otherwise, playing unzoomed does nothing bad - no sanity decrease or anything. Just wait a while and wait for energy to come back. - Sound effects when in zoomed-out world are nice, but those ghosts aren't really creepy. - There's sudden increase of difficulty after second level - what do those faint, yelling circles do? Am I supposed to visit them in some specific order? Why do i get more time to stay in zoomed world? Why can't I zoom in when I don't have full energy?

It's really small game, so sadly I don't have much to say about it.

HyperLaserSurvival by Legion 2017-05-09T18:13:02Z

Movement relative to isometric grid, where down arrow makes player's character go 'down' on grid in fast paced game - now that's something that I don't see often. It hurt my brain a little. I spent more time going after pickups than on dodging bullets. Powerups are too powerful and enemies are not strong enough. I think there also should be some kind of "You Lost The Game" message. Game looks nice and reminds me of old, casual games with prerendered sprites - they looked just like that.

RC kitchen Throwdown by oxrock 2017-05-02T13:26:22Z

Low gravity environment with jam-like air, player chased by eldritch horror straight outta Kadath. This game was made in 48 hours, so graphics aren't something that I'll be focusing. I understand you wanted to keep camera close, so that player doesn't know where dog is. Car's physics however are just like stated on the begining - it feels like i'm driving through jam with car on nearly dead batteries (well, right, that's the case here) while being chased by elderly dog with walking cane d;

Also, as others said before, there should be some information that you can replenish your own energy.

Mini Platforms by Devop 2017-05-02T12:33:55Z

Props for using something that isn't Unity d;

There's really nothing to say about this game, as it is more of simple platform game engine than a finished product. You should probably read something about game's main loop and/or interpolation, as player's movement isn't really smooth (small framerate?).

Invest in graphics, add some mechanics and on next Ludum Dare you'll be able to submit really cool game.

INTERGALACTIC SPACE COITUS by Deanard 2017-05-02T12:20:42Z

WHAT. THE. HELL.

It awfully reminds me of my first game i made, each level is different genre, steering is different and not explained sufficently, and title had me hoped for something i didn't manage to get.

WHAT A SMALL WORLD! by ilikescifi 2017-05-03T08:45:43Z

It seems that for gamers it is better to stay in their little world. I don't know who this NPC was, but she? didn't seem to be bothered when player's character got sent to low Earth orbit. I liked how his world kept getting bigger. Graphics look nice, they remind me of RPG Maker. Being able to walk into flowers and NPC wasn't something that I expected.

The Evolution Game by EvoGenGames 2017-05-03T08:56:37Z

All I had to say has already been said in previous comments: - Tracking how units are learning is difficult with only graphs on bottom - Looking at simulation like that is nice, but it would be better if there were some differences in units (dependent on age, energy and so on) - I liked how achievements shown percent of completness, but there don't seem to be any indication which achievement you got?

Devoured Intellect by BoobMarley 2017-05-02T18:34:50Z

Interesting, but it seems to be too easy if you notice who has monster's legs sticking out of their ears (no one does). Quick game to twist your brain. Nice graphics and 'interesting' characters.

Tumblin' down by Shodanon 2017-05-02T11:04:18Z

So, let's start listing: - Graphics are as simple as graphics in Unity can get, but effects make up for this - watching trees fall off the border of the world is nice. - When clicking buttons units go there - it's not a big thing, but you have to remember to deselect units. - I don't really get why i won, enemy run out of food, or paying one tribute to god of destruction was enough? - Game (oponnent?) seems to be too easy - assign one unit to each altar-thingies and enemy will never get them, as he uses only single units to wander around the map. - Enemy barracks should be colored >: - I didn't get to the part when world gets really small, so i didn't really get the feeling of the theme.

Nevertheless, this game has a potential to become something interesting, given enough time and work. In some missions Starcraft 2 used mechanics of removing usable parts of the map, and game centered around it may become similar hit d;

He Was My Reflection by gord10ahmet 2017-05-02T15:22:14Z

I had hopes when I started this game, but it sadly let me down. - Making text based game in Unity seems to be overkill, but you're free to use whatever you want - All game seems to be dependent on is choice whether you board plane or not, everything else is just distraction. Some choices even give you the same response. - It's said that there are two endings, but it feels like there is not even one. I might be expecting too much, but just saying "oh, that was doppelganger, cool" is not an ending i would enjoy. - Mood is really nice, no sounds and black background. You can really feel like you're the one who met your nonexistient twin.

LD51 — Every 10 seconds

game.exe has crashed by cremmy 2022-10-04T13:29:59Z

Well, in fact we're using Dear ImGui here (it helped fix my fear of GUI in games <3 ). We also wanted to use sounds from Windows 95, but license stuff sometimes is complicated. Virtual brofist to fellow SDL/OGL user 🤜 and to everyone: thanks for the comments. Glad you liked playing this game.

MAZE 51 by Lazzor 2022-10-04T10:42:53Z

Clean graphics, nice mazes, good for waking your brain cells in the morning.

Shipanic! by WilloXs 2022-10-04T13:48:20Z

Reminds me of a mobile game with airports, however was it called. Looks nice, sounds and music are ok. Is leaderboard working? Clicking "submit" doesn't seem to work.

MMO Minesweeper by Lex 2022-10-04T13:24:14Z

A multiplayer minesweeper, now that's not something you see every day. Shame that if there's nobody else, you're stuck on the same level. When that happens, it's no different from normal minesweeper >:

Signal by mudlee 2022-10-04T12:50:46Z

Unless you're targeting morse code proffesionals, it'd be better if the code was slower ;_;

Homunculus Heist by Ry-for 2022-10-04T13:35:56Z

Now how should I rate it in "fun" section? Running for your life from a monster, while holding another one in a jar is hardly "fun". It turns out that running past the enemy and falling out of the level - despite looking like a greatest idea - does not count, and after some time you still get caught >:

Ticktock Tactics by Cral 2022-10-04T11:09:42Z

I'm not a big fan of turn-based games. Graphics look nice, sound is OK. I couldn't finish second stage, because I've left one of the units under the clock - all clicks were going to it, and not to the buttons. You might want to look into it.

Temporal Escape by Louis Mareau 2022-10-04T12:18:59Z

Nice music, but is there an end at some point? I took all the shiny orbs and kept slashing through the hordes of enemies, but nothing changed for long time. Well, it does give the impression of being stuck in a loop.

Satellite commander by Henrik Ganard 2022-10-04T12:28:59Z

Man, inhabitants of that planet suck at orbital mechanics. Stable orbit? Who needs that~ As others said - add zoom. It'd also be cool to make it about Kessler Syndrome, where sattelites leave debris that destroys other satellites, increasing a death-zone for your satellite.

Baltic by picttarge 2022-10-04T12:45:01Z

Yup, that's exactly what Baltic sea feels, and it's not an exaggeration. I had some troubles playing, game was not retrieving all keyboard presses and pressing spacebar kept scrolling the page down. It might be goo to give the player more hints when he's freezing, and where it's safe (warmer colors around fire?).

SecOnDay by Bassilij 2022-10-04T12:10:01Z

I fell out of the world - remember to always add some boundaries so that the player can't go too far. Graphically it'd look better if everything was voxelized/pixellated. I guess after some time you'll have to change the puzzle, people playing later won't know what's going on d;

No Time To Dark by Arsvarg 2022-10-04T12:39:15Z

At first I was wondering why my character was not moving and started screaming, despite standing on a perfectly fine platform. It turns out that - even thought he moved - he can't jump between platforms. As others already mentioned, it might be good to improve the timing of death animation. Given more time and polish, this might become a really interesting game.

10 Seconds Till Death by DaylonWilkins 2022-10-04T12:19:50Z

I don't see any links. Did you forget about them?

Life Passes You By by Cosmonautical 2022-10-04T13:39:23Z

I came here to play, not to feel ;-;

10 Second Testing by Triangle Point 2022-10-04T12:33:17Z

The fact that I can jump while on the roof a feature or a bug? =D Some kind of slower transition between levels would be nice, especially given that we have only 10s to find out what's going on.

Spaceship Parking Simulator by fuzzybut 2022-10-05T08:27:33Z

Headbutting a planet right after launching is not a good idea, yeah.

What's Under The Teapot? by thegamearchitect 2022-10-04T12:23:40Z

It'd be better if you reset the timer after every 10 seconds so that we can't see how much time we spent playing. It's nice to have good-looking game, but in this case it seems like an overkill.

Slayer Beats by Loki Drams 2022-10-04T10:51:44Z

As mentioned above, using symbols available on currently used controller (be it keyboard or gamepad) would be easier. Also, if you're making rhytm based game, I'd expect smooth movement of icons.

Lights Out by niccolo-temperanza 2022-10-04T12:58:20Z

We can't change character's speed when he's in air (understandable), but we can change his direction (wat.). I agree with others - margins are too small. How about changing how light works? Make longer distances between checkpoints, and you have 10 seconds of the "dark side vision"?
