In my mad rush of development, the fact that my target platform was webgl had kind of slipped my mind. So unfortunately I got a little carried away with physics in a particular situation that will severely impact performance. My apologies to those who discover that super helpful mechanic and have to deal with the slow down.

mgoadric 2017-04-30 07:03

I made it to 1:55 until I ran out of battery. It took me a few times to notice that the grey cylinders were improving my batter life. Cool sound effects for the dog! I felt a little queasy with the shaky camera movement. Wasn't able to make it to the food bowl you depicted above, but I did get the barbell rolling :) Great idea for a small world :)

badram 2017-05-01 07:24

nice work! I also made a unity3d racing game for compo, but focused more on vehicle physics than environment. if you want an example for how to do better vehicle physics, feel free to grab the source code from my project. your game was very atmospheric, not letting the player look back was a good idea. I did encounter the particular situation, but aside from that the game ran fairly well, even on my older desktop. one thing I would recommend when working with unity wheel colliders is to have a 'wheel guard' collider around the top 3/4 of the wheel. this prevents the somewhat unexpected interactions that can occur when a wheel collider clips into another surface or hits a wall.

danbolt 2017-05-01 07:26

The dog was always on my tail! (pun totally intended )

I liked the use of primitives to illustrate what everything was. It had a cool consistent feeling to it and reminded me of these [3D-animated cartoons they used to show on Canadian TV when I was a child](https://youtu.be/X173yUwJTLQ?list=PLbs7tv2MBGMDnZ1tHYFaG39JUTTMvJDEt).

Seeing all the chairs knock over was fun with the dog as well.

loktor 2017-05-01 10:33

Fun game :D And really nice job for creating a 3D Game with all these models in 2 days :) One thing that could be polished if you keep on working on it, would be the controls they felt kinda off initially for me. But really nice job, the hound really got to me :D

idid 2017-05-01 10:50

Overall, I found the game quite fun, as not always being able to see the dog can make it surprisingly tense.

Also, I really like the use of sound effects, as not only are they terrifying, but using them to determine the location of the dog feels quite unique.

As previously said, the controls did feel a bit sluggish, and having the dog flip you over feels a little bit unfair. (Also, seeing the cooker get flipped was quite amusing)

oxrock 2017-05-01 11:24

@IDid I agree that that car getting flipped is frustrating but I felt I had to leave it in there. An RC car can't right itself without outside intervention and I felt auto correcting it or having a "flip me over" button would cheapen the experience. I appreciate your feedback though and as I said, 100% agree that it's frustrating.

@BadRAM I think my game would be 10x more fun if it had the car physics that your game has. I'll definitely be looking at your source files to see how you accomplished your magic. This was my first time ever working with unity's wheel colliders and I know it shows. I'll be updating the game with the improved physics once the judging has finished.

fernandoadolfo 2017-05-01 11:31

2:50, I fed the dog, I flew at least two meters spinning around myself, I filled my battery, I made the dog destroy the whole kitchen. Funny game.

abhimonk 2017-05-01 12:10

Overall cool game. I ran into performance issues just like you said, but they didn't hinder the experience too much. The car was also a little difficult to control. I really like the panting noise of the dog, and the sound effects overall. I know that sounds weird but it made the situation feel much more desperate for me. I also like the food bowl and the dumbbells. Those helped quite a bit. Nice work!

janekx21 2017-05-01 12:11

Nice game but are you not a little slow? hmmm

jusw85 2017-05-01 12:12

I survived for about 1:30, didn't know that battery life could be extended. Perhaps it could've been communicated in the instructions or gameplay. I loved the physics and flipping all the furniture around!

lefaygames 2017-05-01 12:14

I made it to 2:17. Got flipped over twice and died just when I tried distracting the dog for the first time. Car could have moved a little faster for my taste. But fun little game!

florian-van-strien 2017-05-01 12:24

Nice game overall, especially for 48 hours.

I liked the theme/"story" of the game. I feel the Ludum Dare theme wasn't used too well, as I didn't really think the kitchen felt like a small world. In fact, it was rather big for my robot. Still, it's used okay in my opinion.

As others have said, the controls seemed to react poorly. It may be that the game simply didn't run so well on my computer, but I also got semi-stuck (could move after a while) a couple of times. This made the game feel a little unfair sometimes, and was the biggest problem of the game. The sound effects work really nicely here. The graphics are pretty good, not great but still lots of nice elements for 48 hours.

Small things: - A more prominent Try Again button on the "you died" screen would be nice. - I still got the same tip and the end if the dog hadn't gotten to me at all, I just didn't take any batteries. - Batteries were a bit hard to see for such a key item. - I liked the traps!

jamesy012 2017-05-01 12:37

It was like a horror game :fearful: you can hear the dog coming up behind you but you can't turn around to know how close it is. it makes me all tence D:

I could not find anything that would distract the dog though, it always seemed so close. And when the dog hit you I felt that there wasn't much you could do.

Also that Dog is strong as! was trying to escape it near the fridge, next thing I know the fridge is on the other side of the room. I was freaking out.

having the ability to move the camera around would have been nice, just to see parts of the scenery to know where to go next

oxrock 2017-05-01 13:14

@florian-van-strien for me, the batteries were actually more of an after thought, there's another mechanic in place for recharging your battery, you can see it flashing with lightning bolts at the start of every game.

@jamesy012 The game did take on a horror type vibe with being chased and having to rely on sound to know what's behind you all the time. I actually really liked that aspect despite it being initially unintended. As for the dog throwing objects around, I found it so hilarious I just couldn't take it out. I didn't want to deny any of you the pleasure of seeing a fridge or oven tossed aside by a dog while he chases your rc car :joy:

radmccool 2017-05-01 14:25

Cool idea and while not graphically polished, the design worked well. The dog sounds were pretty creepy when its right behind you and you can't check behind you without sacrificing distance between you and the dog.

I feel like this would be much more enjoyable if it ran faster... though you explained why its slow in your description. Maybe consider a downloadable build?

davidthelazar 2017-05-01 16:39

This was pretty fun. I like the clever ways to slow the dog down, and it was unexpectedly scary when you saw him slowly sliding at you. I do wish everything were a bit faster; it doesn't really feel like you're in an RC car.

Overall, great job!

ryte2byte 2017-05-01 16:53

Congrats on finishing your first LD! Quite an accomplishment! I agree that the original is too slow, but the car is very hard to control in the new one.

physcokillermonkey 2017-05-01 17:01

Apart from the car feeling very sluggish, nice little game. I also feel that the audio of the dog could be a little louder than the noise of you taking damage as it's rather hard to hear.

mathijsvissers 2017-05-01 17:51

Dang dog keeps flipping me over. I like the idea. The car felt very slow in the first version, a lot better in the second one, although a bit like I was driving on a slick surface. The dog food thing totally lags my game but you know that already. Dog sound is nice, I like the slightly terrifying feeling when he's right behind you. Well done.

spacedoubt 2017-05-02 06:01

The idea of driving around as RC cars avoiding things and recharging your batteries is a really fun one. I just wanted to go so much faster! I had a lot of fun flinging dog food everywhere. Good job!

candlesan 2017-05-02 07:04

The use of positional audio to help locate the dog is very effective. As I'm driving the car around I need to pay attention to the audio clues that tell me where the dog is.

lurumdurum 2017-05-02 08:19

I would have loved to have an option to move my camera around. Driving away from the dog I could not see how far away he still was! :)

zitao-ye 2017-05-02 09:40

Thanks for your comment on my game. It's really a fun experience to play your game, which gives the player a totally new point of view of the world. So it isn't the world is small, but you are small. Genial to give live to the toy-like car and dog in a small room with such imagination. I love this kind of survived game, the dog is just going with me, it's really scared! I have also tried to interact with the environment, the setting of food of dogs is fun, but it was a little lagging, the physic with the collision with the dog is hyper-fun, I like it.

scornz 2017-05-02 10:27

Man, this was an interesting experience! Creative and original to be in the RC Car, love how well it followed the theme, I enjoyed playing it.

codechomper 2017-05-02 11:12

Cool idea, first thing I thought of was Micro Machines when the theme was announced. Glad someone went with the small car idea! I wish the car was a bit faster and the dog too. I found the dog food bell and the slow down lol. Jams make you forget things like your target platform lol. Anyway I laughed and had fun and that is what games are about good job!

sachos345 2017-05-02 12:00

Re Volt anyone? Sorry man but i did not enjoy this, its okay it was your first try but the gameplay feels slow. I find it cool that you have to know where the doggo is by the sound he makes but an option to move around the camera with the mouse would be nice. About the traps, the only one i found was the dog food one and that killed my fps. It was super easy to start rolling around when you hit just about anything, specially the dog when he attacks you you pretty much have to restart the game as you start flipping around the place =S. You will get better so keep practicing and look out for that optimization man, your next game cant have those massive fps drops again =)

dagegen 2017-05-02 12:10

Great game, I got to 3:23 but then I was too cocky and the dog got me... I agree that it would be very nice if you could look around freely, with the static camera you are not seeing the dog for most of the game.

unit684 2017-05-02 12:41

Nice work with the models and environment. I also liked the sounds :P

The car was a little slow and the camera was perhaps a bit close but I found some batteries and a few traps. Well done, a really nice first jam!

wtoa 2017-05-02 12:45

Great work, I really enjoyed that I could interact with most of the objects in the world. This sort of view reminds me a lot of Twisted Metal!

japes 2017-05-02 12:48

Cool, different idea. The performance issues killed this though unfortunately, would play it much more if things were faster and more responsive. Well done on graphics and sounds for a compo entry, will definitely look into using fameMusicGenerator in my next entry.

kroute 2017-05-02 13:01

This is a funny idea which fits to the theme. The car velocity should be much higher in my opinion.

mrchippy 2017-05-02 13:09

The sound was pretty cool. It was a good idea. The physics were a bit annoying though. Sometimes you would get stuck in the dog.

cremmy 2017-05-02 13:26

Low gravity environment with jam-like air, player chased by eldritch horror straight outta Kadath. This game was made in 48 hours, so graphics aren't something that I'll be focusing. I understand you wanted to keep camera close, so that player doesn't know where dog is. Car's physics however are just like stated on the begining - it feels like i'm driving through jam with car on nearly dead batteries (well, right, that's the case here) while being chased by elderly dog with walking cane d;

Also, as others said before, there should be some information that you can replenish your own energy.

simonhutchinson 2017-05-02 22:36

Neat little game! This is the first racer (kinda) that I've come across in this Ludum Dare! I agree with @kroute, above, that the car could definitely go a lot faster (maybe speeding up if you didn't hit anything for a while), but overall great first entry!

harry-alissavakis 2017-05-19 17:25

Great entry and a very interesting interpretation of the theme! As stated above I think that if the car was a bit faster that could work really well, but even as it is it's a very fun game! I did get rolled over and stuck a couple of times, but that usually happens with RC vehicles either way :P Nevertheless, well done! :D
