LD38 — A Small World

Toy Run by TimBeaudet 2017-05-01T18:51:17Z

This was a pretty good runner, I felt challenged to try to beat the scoreboard times. I didn't have a problem with the controls, but something is weird about the feedback/feel when you hit an obstacle. Sometimes the collisions felt a little bit off or something.

Trying to simultaneously get a good time and get all the coins was interesting.

Savannah by TheMadStrauss 2017-05-01T15:09:13Z

Love the art, love the music. I really like how the music picks up when a predator is after you.

I was confused for a long time about how to start running from a predator. I think it would have been better if the double-tap made you run (or gave an indication that it registered) even if you weren't being chased, because it made me feel like the controls weren't working.

Overall, neat concept. With some additional tweaking I think it would be a very fun game. Looks great, sounds great.

Routine by Breno_M 2017-05-06T03:33:57Z

I think the concept here was great. I think the flow of the game might be improved if you didn't have to wait until the rebels' off days to plan their work out and vice versa. It might also help to be able to fast forward so you don't have to wait a week if you screw up.

Still, really great unique game. I love the mood you set. I'm going to come back to this one to see if I can get farther next time.

A Cage of Love by Quetzakol 2017-05-08T16:14:24Z

Neat game. There were some collision issues where the player would get stuck on scenery or shots would be blocked when it seemed they shouldn't.

I liked the shrinking world and how it took a place we'd explored and made it new and more challenging each time. I think that would be a neat concept to expand on.

AS Mall World by Sean S. LeBlanc 2017-05-08T13:43:41Z

This was quirky and weird and funny. Sure there's no real objective, but something about the way it felt to shoot those little dollars out of my tentacle-arm-wallet box was very satisfying. Talking to people by bouncing money off their head made me laugh too. Love the pun in the name.

As mentioned above, everything had a weird double-vision that made it disorienting and started to give me motion-sickness.

If you wanted to add objectives, even just adding some simple puzzle-solving (this guy wants a phone, buy a phone, take it to him) would probably scratch that itch for people who feel like there isn't a point.

Good game, I enjoyed it!

Last Bloom by NvrSkipGameDay 2017-05-01T17:23:04Z

This was really fun, I liked the mechanic. Only thing I would have liked to see is some indication of your progress to the next level (I'm guessing it was just time-based?)

An Ant World by wolar 2017-05-01T16:58:18Z

I couldn't get the mac version to work :(

An Ant World by wolar 2017-05-01T18:54:41Z

@wolar Sure. When I try to launch the game it pops up a window that says "You can’t open the application “AntWorld.app” because PowerPC applications are no longer supported."

Submersible by kleinzach 2017-05-08T14:36:01Z

You did a great job nailing the creepy atmosphere of being underwater. It was fun to explore around and just feel mildly creeped out.

The controls felt a little unintuitive; I repeatedly forgot I had to click-click-click them and expected holding them down to work.

It would be cool to have some rare, larger weirdos out there to discover to add to the feeling that there just might be something out there beyond the shadow of what I can see.

Very cool game. Unique take on the theme.

Going No Air by starspell 2017-05-08T13:28:29Z

Haha, very funny game in the vein of QWOP/Octodad. I was very very bad at it, but it was fun and stressful, as it should be.

My only recommendation would be some sort of visual cue that showed when you were successfully in position to put in a cork. As is, it felt sort of random when a cork was placed which made it hard to learn the game through play.

Overall, fun game!

A small world lost in a big universe by siryakko 2017-05-04T00:24:57Z

I liked the character switching mechanic, and I think it could really shine in a more complicated game with some more interesting geometry.

The second level was soooo empty and I eventually got bored not knowing where to go. It might help to have a background that helps differentiate where you are, or possibly even a minimap.

The graphics were very cute, and I liked playing a nonviolent game. I'd like to see what you could do if you took this further.

Annulus by Zarkonnen 2017-05-02T13:33:32Z

I really liked discovering upgrades and seeing what things did. And it's always fun to make numbers get bigger. Unfortunately, I eventually had to quit because the controls got too frustrating. It's too bad, I wanted to see what all my knowledge was going to get me!

Shapeshifter: The King of A Small World by Rixud 2017-05-04T02:28:01Z

This was a lot of fun. I liked the way the different abilities came together to solve the different puzzles.

There are some implementation issues: sometimes jumping was frustrating because it was easy to push jump too late and just fall down, and sometimes you get stuck on ledges. But otherwise the level design and general mechanics were pretty fun.

I'd enjoy seeing what this would look like with a bit more polish to it.

Two Dot by wh05herlock 2017-05-03T19:36:01Z

I really like this a lot. Very nice progression of puzzle mechanics.

The doors/"buttons" could have more obvious markings, even after beating a few of the doored puzzles I was still scratching my head over how the doors and their "buttons" correlated.

Still, super fun, a lot of really clever puzzles!

@highlyinteractive A hint from a fellow player: It's possible in 5 (or less?) steps. You might be missing something about how the colored "X"s work?

o, the game by pta2002 2017-05-01T20:35:19Z

Very fun, minimalist game. Interesting strategy, and risk vs. reward with bullets that can kill your player.

My only complaint is that enemies occasionally spawned directly on top of me (while I wasn't even moving!) so I couldn't avoid them at all and it felt unfair (I noted you said above you fixed this; I was playing the postjam Mac version, if that helps).

All in all, great game!

Factions by frenchie 2017-05-06T15:28:15Z

Love the art, love the sounds/music, love the gameplay. Great condensation of core RTS gameplay.

There were a couple levels where the winner was determined within the first couple of seconds and there was no way to come back. That's more of a complaint with the whole RTS genre, but it was more obvious here since matches were so short.

Every time I beat a level, the music would crack me up yet again. Great game, love the light mood.

Mr-Vpn by tobia88 2017-05-01T18:44:00Z

This was a very neat concept. I enjoyed the puzzle solving bits quite a lot, though I got stuck. I didn't know how to get the 5-digit code for the little computer, and I couldn't get the second light on the locked door in the red level (I got the breakkey one to work).

Very cool concept.

Space Aliens Are Coming by RealityCheck 2017-05-01T15:34:36Z

This was a lot of fun. I liked managing line-of-sight to blast the UFOs as soon as possible. It was good at creating some tension about whether I could make it in time if the UFO spawned far away. It was more fair than I expected; I think I was always able to save people from being abducted, even if they were on the opposite side of the planet.

It was sort of hard to understand what exactly was happening to progress the rocket timer and how I was influencing it. Also, as someone mentioned above, having the rockets move past the cursor position would have been nice.

I cracked up the first time I saw one of the houses start bouncing around to make a baby. Fun game!

Commander's Log by smbe19 2017-05-01T13:31:45Z

Very nice! I'm going to be coming back to this one to play with the systems a bit more. I really liked the way the astronauts moved around and I'm interested to see how the later-game optimization goes.

My only small complaint is that it was easy to forget to hit cancel after building a room and accidentally build another copy of it when trying to click on the command station to order supplies. Either auto-canceling after building or using a separate menu item for ordering supplies would have helped me.

I'm also not a fan of voice-over for text that's on the screen, but that's just a personal preference.

Overall, great game!

It's a Small World, So Let's Crash It into Things by simonhutchinson 2017-05-01T19:36:36Z

I really wanted to enjoy this, but the jerky scrolling gave me motion sickness within a few seconds and I had to stop. I want to hear what everyone's talking about with the voice lines, so maybe I'll come back to this later tonight.

Little Infinity by Kevin Barrios 2017-05-04T00:42:53Z

This was a pretty neat mechanic, though it never really gets challenging. I think if you continued making more levels that started adding additional mechanics, this could be really cool.

Until Tomorrow by MSiddeek 2017-05-06T21:04:59Z

This is a really cool entry. It's rare to see Ludum Dare entries that rely this heavily on story. It's even more rare to see LD entries with writing this good. Your dialog and lore text never feels stilted and dumb like in a lot of other games.

I didn't have any issues with the controls like other people seemed to. I do feel like having to talk to some people multiple times in the first area was nonintuitive and made me feel like I was missing something until I figured it out.

I liked the "secret" area with the stranger, though I wish there was a bit more of a payoff with him (unless there was, and I just didn't figure it out).

I'm glad I stuck through it though, the ending and storytelling was really neat!

Little Fortune Planet by Flaterectomy 2017-05-02T00:04:28Z

Man, I had no idea what was going on but I still had a good time with it. Like several above, I got all the achievements besides the volcano. How the heck do you get the volcano?

I wasn't really sure how to strategize with the cards, or how to interplay that with the sandbox stuff, but it made me laugh either way.

Glass Houses by diptoman 2017-05-04T02:04:34Z

I love the art style in this. The music and visuals come together to beautifully get the mood across.

I disagree with a lot of the criticism above about the actual gameplay being boring. I feel like that's the point. You're just getting up, doing your boring job, and going home, while all around you the world just falls apart. And the "only" thing you can do by changing your routine is make a difference to one person.

Great game, very neat.

DUCKTRON by neontropics 2017-05-06T03:47:00Z

I laughed so hard at the text in this. You did so much with so little text. The gameplay is simple, but surprisingly fun. There's more strategy to it than it seems, trying to sneak up behind the ducks before they can aggro you. I found myself trying over and over again to improve my score, hacking all the other non-sentient ducks.

Great game!

DUCKTRON by neontropics 2017-05-06T03:49:20Z

Oh man, I realized I payed the first time without sound, so I tried it again unmuted. The sounds cracked me up too.

42-Mikronikus by Cambryx 2017-05-01T14:36:40Z

I liked this a lot. The combination of mechanics is just enough to keep it difficult and engaging without being truly overwhelming or frustrating. I like that the punishment for messing up is just a reduction in score rather than having to start all over again. The graphics are very cute as well.

I would have preferred if the shield controls were either measured relative to the center of the screen or controlled with left/right keys. It was difficult putting the shield where I wanted while moving my dude around.

Still, awesome game. Most fun I've had so far this LD.

Come on, barbarian! by uchiro 2017-05-01T20:01:24Z

hahahaha, this had me cracking up. The gameplay is so ridiculous and frustrating, I loved it. It makes me want a 2-player version, where you're impotently trying to score blows on each other, only to accidentally step too close to the opponent and watch all your blood spill out in seconds.

And the animation when dead guys are hoisted up off screen.

So weird, so great.

D4RK and the Small Worlds by abhimonk 2017-05-01T23:51:09Z

I liked the game, but I felt like the crescent moon dudes were too difficult to fight. It was always worth it to just dash away from them. I may come back to see if I can get farther with a controller. Nice game!

The Cockroach Lessons by Ibispi 2017-05-02T00:50:44Z

Pretty good runner. I wish there was a bit more feedback (or even a pause!) when you die.

World of Echoes by multiplexor 2017-05-02T00:38:28Z

This was awesome. One of the few games I just HAD to play to the very end. The portal things were a neat mechanic and you exploited them a new way each time. The little bits of other people bleeding into my playthrough was really cool and mysterious.

Like a lot of other people said, the text was slow to appear, but that's a minor issue.

Great job! Very fun, unique game, especially in the compo time limit.

Space Cowboy's Last Stand by jasperarmstrong 2017-05-01T23:53:53Z

The cowboy on the moon cracked me up, and so did the whole place blowing up.I was terrible at this, but it was fun!

Super Collapse Guy by crazi456 2017-05-06T15:06:34Z

The mechanic is well done and very unique. I wouldn't know where to start making something like this work in a weekend.

Obligatory criticisms: Sometimes it felt like I was playing by trial and error rather than really looking at the level design and working out what I should do. Could have just been me being impatient/a moron. It was frustrating to finally get to a spot only to tap one of the spike things and have to start all over.

This game was a lot of fun, and I don't think I've seen another game exactly like this. I'd love to see this expanded out into a full-fledged game.

PogoPogo by obvious-san 2017-05-02T01:00:24Z

I loved the cuteness of the visuals in this. It was very satisfying to watch everyone get excited with me as I bounced around and crowdsurfed. My only complaint is that I was a bit confused as to how my score was tied to what I was doing.

Godly Corp. by Zeriver 2017-05-01T16:19:54Z

Haha, this was hilarious. I liked the combination of focusing on the globe and trying to swat the bugs away. I liked the octodad-like physics/swatting controls.

It was pretty difficult, I think mostly because it was too easy to accidentally swat a bug onto the globe.

Fun game, and a clever, original idea.

Not So Small by CodeChomper 2017-05-04T00:07:03Z

I really liked the level-unfolding mechanic. The game led to a lot of funny moments, especially with the insane blood spray. I don't love the way the poops cause constant damage.

Superbugs by Breadmower 2017-05-06T20:43:30Z

This is a really fun puzzle mechanic. I played all the way through, and felt like it never really got all that challenging. Not necessarily a complaint, because it was a nice, chill game. I wonder whether it would be more or less fun if the difficulty were to be ramped up.

it would be nice if there were a bit more visual indication when you have a virus with an incorrect drug. On the larger levels it sometimes took a while to find the one virus that was keeping me from progressing.

Great game.

In Good Hands by simple-blue 2017-05-01T19:42:30Z

Very neat idea, I've never played a game quite like this. It was a little difficult dealing with issues that cropped up on the other side of the planet, but that was probably me not getting the hang of the right-click controls on my trackpad.

Great job!

Stardust - A space adventure by shiitman 2017-05-01T13:39:33Z

Love the art style! Great humor in the writing as well. I laughed out loud at the solution to the gaping hole in the ship, and laughed again at the computer's response. I normally don't really care for point-and-click adventure games, but this one made me want to keep playing. Good job!

Little Mouse Planet by Frodewin 2017-05-02T13:46:03Z

Nice little game. I was genuinely startled when the cat would appear and I had to run away. I would suggest adding a quick screen showing the controls. I starved my first time because I didn't know what to push to harvest the cheese/fruit. Since spacebar did everything else, I had assumed that was what I needed to push.

Cute, fun game.

Missing Lands by potatolain 2017-05-08T14:54:45Z

Very impressive! The controls felt right, and the graphics/sounds were just right for the NES feel.

The only part that didn't feel very NES-like was the movement. It actually felt too fast/smooth for an NES game. That's not a complaint, because I'd prefer the faster movement. But it is something that didn't feel quite right in an NES context.

Great game. Amazed you were able to knock out a complete (and fun!) NES game in 48 hours.

Rogue Basement by Steve Johnson 2017-05-03T16:52:23Z

Oh man, I really liked this. I loved the sense of humor. The .txt manual was great. The music added to the mood well, and had a very nice progression as you make your way through the basement. The two enemy types and two attack verbs added just enough complexity to make the combat an interesting puzzle/dance. The AI seemed well-done. Great use of color.

If I have to complain about something, I could see adding a mention in the manual about melee attacks for anyone not familiar with roguelikes. I'm also not sure about the healing hallways working for an unlimited number of uses. It takes away from the difficulty a little bit and encourages the player to backtrack through a big chunk of cleared rooms if you take a lot of damage.

All in all this was great. I'm a bit curious about the use of color for the rooms; I always felt like I was in a weird state of being lost yet like I had an inkling of what direction I ought to be going. Was there some logic to the coloring that I only subconsciously noticed that guides you towards the end?

Eine Kleine Insektmusik by davidthelazar 2017-05-01T14:40:41Z

@simple-blue We imported midis, but manually tweaked some metadata in the midi files to determine what was used in-game. Thanks for playing!

Eine Kleine Insektmusik by davidthelazar 2017-05-01T16:51:50Z

@move127 @wolar @smbe19 @psychead @longchamps Yeah, when we were testing the game it was pretty obvious that "just standing still" was too often the right strategy, but we ran out of time to fix it. I think music composed to force you to move would be too hard, so @longchamps idea of adding collectibles to force you to move around to gain points would probably be the best fix.

One other idea we had was to introduce some sort of enemy that followed you that you had to try to trick into getting squished. That would encourage you to put yourself into harm's way and take chances you wouldn't otherwise take.

Thanks for playing and for giving feedback!

Eine Kleine Insektmusik by davidthelazar 2017-05-03T14:54:51Z

@multiplexor We're reading data from the song's midi file. We export the midi file into a format our game can read and add some of our own metadata into it to dictate which tracks/octaves are used to control the game and which to ignore. We also export the midi to an mp3 and pray to any available gods that the processing and the music stay in sync.

A Small Hell by psychead 2017-05-01T14:04:15Z

Nice little puzzle. There were a couple bits where I felt like I had to guess but I also didn't discover the journal until after I finished, which may have made it easier for me to figure it all out.

I genuinely laughed when I thought "what the hell is this?" and the camera panned to show Satan.

It would have been nice to have some visual indicator that let you know which ghosts you had already talked to.

Loved the art. The creepy eyes, and the over-dramatic words floating around were fun. Nice game!

Influenza: The Game by longchamps 2017-05-01T19:28:45Z

Fun, simple game. I laughed at "not medically accurate". I look forward to what you do next time when you're not sick!

Down the Rabbit Hole by those-30-ninjas 2017-05-01T16:31:49Z

Whoa, this is awesome. It took me a little while to understand exactly how everything worked (because I stupidly didn't read your game description until after trying it), but once I did it became a surprisingly deep game. Very nice graphics, very nice sound, very fun gameplay. I really like the gameboy aesthetic and this game works perfectly with it.

First game I've played this LD that I would consider buying as is. Great job!

Spermicorn by Fanu 2017-05-01T23:42:56Z

The music was great and fit the game perfectly. I felt like the egg stage was too long, I started to get bored with just slamming on buttons.

Until the End by FernandoAdolfo 2017-05-01T19:26:19Z

Unique use of the theme. I didn't really have fun, but I guess I wasn't really supposed to.

Good job!

Aliens vs Rng by Valicitor 2017-05-01T14:52:58Z

A little too much rng, I'd say. I got the same event (caste system) something like 5 times in a row. I was a bit confused as to what effects my choices had on what was going on.

Still, I had a chuckle at some of the events/options. Well done.

Globe Trot by Richard Michael Smith 2017-05-01T15:22:51Z

I really like the visuals in this, and I had a lot of fun playing it. I like how the enemies spawn with the spotlight so you can find them from a distance and are rewarded for doing so by being able to blast them before they're mobile.

Like a lot of the comments above, I found myself just shooting straight forward. I think a big part of that is the way the camera swings wildly around. It would disorient me so much that it wasn't worth turning around.

Overall, great game. Even more great considering the compo time limit.

Way Out by Mutfak Studios 2017-05-01T16:14:55Z

Game was a little difficult, such that I preferred to just avoid fighting rather than try to fight, which made it a lot easier. I really liked the art style.

SUN GOD by palemachine 2017-05-01T16:00:59Z

I loved this. The game was fun, and the writing was hilarious. "Fig. 6: The cosmic manifestation of the SUN GOD". Loved the timing of SUN GOD in the intro.

My criticisms: sometimes it felt like a bad random draw that starts you too far from PLANETS made the game unwinnable (but might have been me just being lousy at it). The MINIMAP could have made it more obvious which blip was the player. The color distinction between space and NOTHINGNESS could have been more obvious.

None of that really takes away from it though.

The gameplay was very original. I originally thought "whoa, the GALACTIC POLICE are super unfair", but it was because I was bad at the game. They're balanced very well for the "get in and get the hell out" gameplay. Great great job.

Flat World by rpmoura 2017-05-08T16:22:10Z

I'm not sure it was working for me? I was able to control it and everything, but getting three in a row never had any effect on anything. (Playing the web build)

RC kitchen Throwdown by oxrock 2017-05-01T16:39:47Z

This was pretty fun. I like the clever ways to slow the dog down, and it was unexpectedly scary when you saw him slowly sliding at you. I do wish everything were a bit faster; it doesn't really feel like you're in an RC car.

Overall, great job!

Defend the Earth by Scrumplesplunge 2017-05-01T17:15:11Z

This is fun and there's a lot of clever bits I liked about it, but wow was I bad at it. I felt like it was too easy to end up way off in space. Probably just me being an idiot though.

I really liked how your ship orbits the planet. That felt really unique while still being a natural choice. I also liked how your shots would collide with the enemy shots so killing them was like a tug of war. I loved the font and the arrows when you got far away were helpful.

Nice job.

NO STEP ON HYOOMINS by makenai 2017-05-06T03:57:48Z

Unique, funny idea. It seems difficult to purposely get a high score, but some of the other people here seem to have gotten the hang of it, so there must be something I'm missing.

Immediately obvious how to play, and I love the silliness of it. Nice job!

Cosmic Cleaner by Burgee 2017-05-01T13:16:00Z

Very fun, but took a while to get the hang of. It probably would be more intuitive if the y position of the asteroid determined whether it moved up/down instead of x-position.

Everything in this game was SO CUTE. The faces on the planets, the little robot, it was all great. I loved when I saw the little planet singing/whistling. So much fun to just look at, and made it extra sad when I messed up and blasted one of them . Great game!

Morlandia by Lino 2017-05-02T14:21:00Z

I would love to see more text adventures in ludum dare. This one could benefit from more actual content, though the randomly-grabbed snippets were fun. Maybe if they contained more clues, this would be a more satisfying little maze. Looking forward to seeing what you produce in the future if you have more time to invest!

Let's Be Happy in Our Small World by Tuomo 2017-05-08T13:18:45Z

This was fun. While playing, I was thinking the first couple levels felt too easy, and I was coming up with a list of complaints/suggestions... then all of a sudden I realize I'm darting my eyes around the level from vase to cat to cat to vase to door to vase to door in a panic. The progression is great, where the same mechanic goes from trivial to overwhelming just by scaling it up.

Just out of curiosity: I had one level where I swear two of the people were exactly the same, and one of these two were the culprit. Was I wrong, and everyone is guaranteed to be different? If they can be the same, was I just lucky that I picked the right one of the two or would they both have counted as correct?

IF nothing stops people from being identical but the game still counts them as separate people, then that would be my only complaint.

Well done, unique and polished game. (A high score table might have been cool for this too! Mine is 3594)

Tiny Hadron Collider by clegamecoop 2017-05-02T00:47:37Z

Nice simple game. A couple times I was confused about what was going on, but once I got the hang of it it was a neat little arcade game. Nice job. I agree with @breno-m and @izunah, this would be perfect on mobile
