Really nice artwork. But the control feels weird...

timbeaudet 2017-04-26 01:54

Controls can be Up/Down/Space, though I would like more feed back if they feel weird to others; what controls would have worked better?

Duplicate Post....

I've played the game and it ran smoothly. The gameplay is simple but fun. The graphics look sweet and appropriate with the toy theme. The thing I liked the most were the music and the sound. It was so immersive that for a moment I thought I were a toy! I don't have anything negative to comment on, other than maybe that there could've been more/longer levels but it's a ludum dare game so nobody expects that anyways. So... :ok_hand:

This was a pretty good runner, I felt challenged to try to beat the scoreboard times. I didn't have a problem with the controls, but something is weird about the feedback/feel when you hit an obstacle. Sometimes the collisions felt a little bit off or something.

Trying to simultaneously get a good time and get all the coins was interesting.

I like it - especially the graphics are great. The music is also pretty good, and the sound effects are very cute. Good work on that.

The gameplay is a bit more problematic, since I feel like the controls are a bit unresponsive at times. For example when I jump, then crash down and immediately want to jump again, it doesn't let me. But it somehow feels like it should. Also I find it a bit unclear how high and how long I'll jump at what speeds, but that might just be me. I didn't have any other problems though, so it's all good. Overall I think it's a very good entry and I do really like it.

I really liked the graphics, and the idea (and the game of course).

You can even make it bigger to more levels or an infinite runner.

As I try to go for gold times/scores, the lack of a reset button was a bit frustrating.

Thankfully I was able to just Esc back to the menu when I mess up a good run, but a simple press of R would've been a nice little addition.

That's pretty much my only problem though, aside from the hitboxes which weren't actually that bad.

Also what's the deal with the coins in the Kitchen? I managed to collect them all, but the last 4 didn't get added to the final tally on the leaderboard, even though they did get counted while I was in the level. RIP all golds :slight_frown:

A solid runner game. Controls were a bit floaty, but I got used to it the more I played. The only other complaint I had was that the music was bit high pitched and screechy. Not a major issue since I could mute it, but something to consider for future projects. Great job!

I'm on Linux, and it was easier for me to run the window one with wine  !

Very funny game ! Everything is good : graphics, gameplay, music, ... Good job !

The graphics and audio are good. Your artist's style reminds me of Another World.

But I think the controls are too complicated. I have only played the least common denominator runner games, so I was expecting to hold "right" and sometimes hit "up" or "down". In practice, I couldn't jump fast enough because I forgot there was a double jump. Then I would jump too high and hit things. Then I would duck and hit something else. It doesn't seem like I can put the player where I want reliably. I think it needs fewer features, or least an easier easy mode to start with.

I get error on windows https://snag.gy/TSDngJ.jpg

timbeaudet 2017-05-09 14:48

@ventura - your error is because OpenAL is not installed, there is a link and explanation in the readme.txt file. Thanks for trying to play!

The sound effects are absolutely magnificent!

The obstacle course itself was fun and challenging, with good looking obstacles.

I think I join previous comments about the controls.

zotapianola 2017-05-15 00:38

I loved the art and, above everything, the music and sound effects. It's cool that you managed to make more than one level. The controls weren't great, but I enjoyed the game anyway. Congratulations! This is very professional work. Nice!

dollarone 2017-05-16 13:14

Nice game! Graphics were neat, animation great, and the idea of the game is cool. Would have been good to have controls instructions in-game, but for a LD-game, who cares :)

The controls were kind of weird - mainly the fact that if you sprint you can't jump. Also some obstacles kind of require you to prepare before you see them (if you are running) - maybe this is intentional though, to make people remember the level?

Levels were varied and with an increasing difficulty, although getting all the coins kind of seems impossible in the last level?

all in all, a nice game!

ocarson 2017-05-16 13:29

The art was very nice, as was the music, had a good feel to it. I really got some mad speed, and once i figured out double jumping I was away! Nice to have 3 diff levels too. Feels very complete with menus and everything, which is an achievement. All in all I enjoyed it :)

timbeaudet 2017-05-16 13:29

It seems a lot of people think sprinting (D, Right or Space) is a button to tap. But doing this requires a minimum "warm-up" which I suppose is the major complaint about controls. If instead you hold sprint when desired, you may have a better time.

Also, to jump you can hold jump to jump higher. (Note that you can double jump, and to do so you need to hold until you reach peak, quickly release and hold again).

Also, while sliding there is a minimum slide distance, but if you hold slide you will slide longer. There is a maximum though. This control explanation brought to you by the makers of Toy Run. Have fun!

laaph 2017-05-17 03:42

Woo fun! I learned the controls the hard way (I should have read comments first!). I didn't figure out sliding until the last level. Background audio is excellent, squeaking bunny is annoying but actually fits with the theme. Art is lovely.

PS: TimBeaudet, you haven't been playing any games? Is that what the statistics tell me?

lilkrit 2017-05-17 16:27

The game is cool, the animations are very nice for the time given. Nice parallax and the amount of possible moves is just right. Not too much, not too little. However the game is just a bit too slow for my taste, sometimes I'm not sure what is background and what isn't. Or what I can dodge or not.

You mentioned installing additional stuff, that's a bit inconvenient.
