Great stuff right there. Really dig the gameloop! Theme is spot on. Need to be conservative on the ammo and take fast decisions. 50secapo.png

You seem to have learned a lot since that first game! The time-loop thing was weird at first: "well Mr. Time Traveller, you could get your hearts back too" Then I thought that given it's you traveling in time, it makes sense. But then why bullets reappear? Then I stopped caring and tried to get a highscore. Sixty something! I closed the window too fast ':D

I enjoyed this! It was interesting having to get to certain places ASAP while budgeting the ammo.

ismael-rodriguez 2022-04-05 04:21

The rewind mechanic is very cool, reminds me of Tracer in Overwatch. I like the little touches too like the blood spatter and the way the crystals coalesce. Good job!

ambear 2022-04-05 05:55

Got 79 score xd STyle and mechanics are masterpiece Liked everything, if it would be not game for compo, I want more levels and guns and upgrades hahaha Btw it is game for compo, so you made really great job!

haztro 2022-04-05 05:58

Nice entry, great use of the theme. - Loved how the shooting felt - great blood effects ;) - the mechanic was pretty cool, I would have loved to have seen this utilised more in the game. Great job :)

Neat game! I included it in my Ludum Dare compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://youtu.be/v0i3VE06y_Y

superpokeunicorn 2022-04-05 17:08

@jupiter-hadley Thanks so much for including my game in your video!

I like the graphics and the shooting, but the movement feels super awkward, like the character simultaneously weighs 1,000 lbs while moving and 0 when movement stops. I think it's a good concept, but the movement should be fine-tuned a bit. It's cool that you were able to remake one of your classic games, but I'm not quite sure if that's in the spirit of the LD compo, although I'll let someone else make a more informed opinion on that.

@Anonymous Thanks for your feedback on the controls. To be clear, the game is more of a loose reimagining of the original, not a direct copy. The original didn't have the rewind mechanic, enemy spawning/AI, or even shooting. I wanted to take advantage of this jam to finally follow up on the feedback I got on the original all those years ago and make something special to commemorate Ludum Dare's 20th anniversary.

Outstandiing! Always love time manipulation mechanics :)

jovialknoll 2022-04-06 03:26

I liked a lot about this one: * seemed to really buy into it's own arcade-y loop, was focused. * simple evocative art and sound effects * nice feeling movement (I kind of wanted it a little faster paced / more frantic feeling, but that's a nitpick) * visual indicators for the crystals appearing that are visible from most locations, clearly readable game in general * I liked how the gameplay naturally shifts to more running and avoidance as you run low on ammo and rely more heavily on finding the next crystal

superpokeunicorn 2022-04-06 07:28

@jovialknoll Thanks for the detailed feedback! I definitely do need to work on the controls a bit; perhaps adding a sprint or something would help. Believe it or not, the game was originally going to be even slower! Thankfully, an early playtester warned me that it was too slow, so I sped it up considerably. You can thank him for saving the game!

Loved this game, jeje it has everything that I like. Zombies, a shotgun to kill zombies, and the posibility of killing zombies over and over again XD.

I loved the go back effect, the pixel art and the music.

Also I see that you made it with Monodevelop which from my point of view makes it even more impressive even though Ludum Dare doesn't rate people on the tech choice I know that it has been even more difficult to develop and I appreciate that :)

Thanks for this entry, very enjoyable :)

Enjoyable game. The time mechanic was fun. Sound and graphics were simple but charming. Having limited ammo and trying to navigate to the crystals in the tight space added some interesting strategy to it. Having more enemy types or weapon types would've been great. Overall very solid entry.

18th ludum dare with windows only?

scrawny 2022-04-06 13:13

This project's got it all. Fantastic use of the theme, gameplay feels great, art/sounds super charming, feels pretty polished. Loved it, great job

phoenixofforce 2022-04-06 13:20

I havent played the first entry but judging from the images this seems like a good remake ^^ Well done :)

marumari 2022-04-06 15:31

A really cool game idea

alphish 2022-04-06 18:50

I really like how the gameplay and scoring mechanics are balanced here. It's good to kill as many zombies as possible in a loop, but you shouldn't start shooting too early or you won't restore your bullets (also, with limited bullets you want to aim for groups of zombies rather than single ones). Also, with each loop you lose at least a bit of time overall, so the game won't drag on forever (which further makes efficient scoring in a single loop imortant). The only thing I'm missing is some bonus points for health remaining after 50 seconds pass (e.g. 10 per health remaining), to slightly push the score boundaries even further for those who reach the apocalypse without getting hit.

Also, it would be nice to get online leaderboards, but I understand why it wouldn't make it in the Compo scope. ^^' It would be nice to have some more spectacular apocalypse (at least screen gradually turning white or something with some noise and maybe screenshake), so I can tell I died from the apocalypse and not from a zombie. On the other hand, the time rewind mechanic was very satisfying to watch. ^^

The game kept me engaged until I reached the apocalypse while still trying to get as much score as possible - I eventually ended up getting the score of 125. Well done! ^^

superpokeunicorn 2022-04-06 21:33

@alphish That's the highest score I've seen so far; congrats! The idea of bonus points for remaining health is definitely an interesting one, maybe I should've added it. You're also right that the "apocalypses" was pretty lame. I was originally going to have a much cooler effect where the whole world blew up, but I decided to spend the last hour or so balancing the game instead, which I think payed off in the end. Anyway, thanks for the feedback!

gdesecrate 2022-04-07 01:40

Thanks for the game. I liked the time mechanics.

rojo 2022-04-07 05:55

I think I ended up with a score of about 50. Good use of the theme and decent enough graphics and sound for a compo entry. Nice job.

taran95 2022-04-07 06:50

nice game! Loved the concept!

noisemaker 2022-04-07 08:17

Great little game! Loved the rewind mechanic + blood particle effects. Graphics and audio are a little lackluster, but for a one-man dev team they're just fine.

velvetlobster 2022-04-07 12:36

Oh I like how satisfying the killing is, the character does seem angry like on a revenge spree, I can imagine some drama behind it

cool submission, i like the gun effects and the UI is very clean. the rewind mechanic made the game replayable, but the combat felt quite slow to me. overall good game :)

clemall 2022-04-07 21:43

I love a good rewind mechanic and you did it very well. The game is quite fun and interesting. I would love to have more levels ! Great job !

roolow 2022-04-10 23:20

It's very satisfying that one pellet from your shotgun is enough to liquidity the zombies. And the quick flow of ammo conservation, to then being fully restocked held my attention. A fun little arcade game with a unique feel and well executed!

arihan10 2022-04-10 23:22

Nice game! Although it has a few quirks that make it seem a bit more unfair than it should be (such as the seemingly random delay between collecting a crystal and spawning the next crystal), I enjoyed playing it and managed to get a score of 80 before dying :D Good job!

superpokeunicorn 2022-04-11 01:33

@arihan10 Thanks for the feedback! The crystal spawning is actually based on a fixed global timer, so when you collect one has no effect on when the next spawns. You could even have multiple on screen at once if you're slow enough. But I do think you're right that a fixed time between when you collect one and when the next one spawns would've been the better design decision. Anyway, thanks again for playing!

realtanhen 2022-04-11 14:18

Really fun gameplay loop, I love how it's straight into the action, and when you die straight back to the action! I'd have loved this more with a slightly larger room, but the layout of the room made the most of the space!

marvis 2022-04-11 19:30

wow so much blood <3

fatpenguin 2022-04-11 19:31

I think it's a cool idea to remake your first LD game.

The gameplay is really innovative and it was a lot of fun to play! It's great that when you die, the time turns back and you start from the beginning. Not only does it look nice it also encourages to keep playing another round :D

Overall very good. Thanks for your entry!

ironcutter 2022-04-13 18:48

Great mechanics, theme on spot! Really well done!
