Sometimes the fire button didn't work and the character stoped moving. Besides that, I got a nice Zelda retro vibe from the game.

Due to many comments (lol?) about the controls I should probably clarify what I was trying to do - I wanted to make twinstick shooter style controls, but without actual twinstick controls, so holding fire wil autofire, and will lock your aim direction into the direction you were facing when you started firing

nilead 2017-05-01 17:31

Lol about that guy repeating his comment XD Controls are a little weird sometimes yeah, but not much of a problem.

kappaix 2017-05-01 17:36

Nice little world - I couldn't finish it though - just couldn't find one of the items (last on the right of the inventory?).

Either way, I was having fun exploring to see what was around - the controls remind me of Smash TV (which I played a lot of on the Megadrive) - so got the hang of it. Just the delay between hitting space and actually firing feels a little bit sluggish?

Well done! Thanks a lot for sharing!

geeitsomelaldy 2017-05-01 17:40

Controls were fine, back in the day a lot of freeware shooters had similar controls (though it was normally a separate button to lock your direction, like CTRL or SHIFT).

Only other issue I'd say is that it ends rather abruptly, it would make more sense to return to your ship with all the pieces you collected rather than end right away. I never even got to see the top left corner screen because it ended as soon as I entered it (I only had 1 piece left to collect at that point)

kcreanor 2017-05-01 17:41

Nice little game, controls are a bit sticky when firing but otherwise simple and easy to pick up. Very retro style both in graphics and gameplay (which is a good thing!) however I have no idea how you complete it - how you reach that battery escaped me completely, but perhaps I'm just being stoopid. Well done, a solid effort

Lovely sprites and level design, the room names were a nice touch too, imaginative. The firing was a little awkward but got the hang of it after a while. Kept me entertained for 5 minutes!

ididgame 2017-05-01 17:44

The little astronaut is really cute and the tiles are a nice throwback. Also getting the item on the right was a nice little aha moment.

You already addressed the biggest problems in your known issues. The shooting doesn't really feel too responsive which i think could be fixed by increasing the speed or adding a small reload meter. I was also a bit confused when i won by walking to the top left but i guess thats what was meant by escaping.

sam-at-wide-open-games 2017-05-01 17:47

Nice! I really liked the sprites a lot :-) I'm with @kappaix in that I couldn't get the battery either but thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Thanks for sharing!

I think the fire button didn't work and the character stopped moving...

Actually, I enjoyed playing the game. The fire button could be tweaked to fire quicker, the strafe feature helped some. I liked how the enemies followed me, even to other screens. I did not like the Southern Desert, though. The design on that scene was slow when returning with the key. If there was some kind of way to bypass the turns coming back, or a way to run, it would be better. The enemy was also able to clip through the wall, not sure if that by design or not, but I did not expect it to nearly hit me when I walked by on the other side of the wall. Game did have an original Zelda style which was cool. Liked the enemy kill sound, too.

Would love a review of our game:

There's a bug in which you eventually get stuck in the cemetery. You can see the scene but not the character.

Overall a very fun game! I couldn't find the last piece of the ship though. It would had been nice if you included some type of background music to add more to the ambience.

mrnyarlathotep 2017-05-01 18:21

@geeitsomelaldy - yeah, I was originally planning on that, I just second guessed myself that I'd already added a lot of 'padding' to stretch playtime out, and figured throwing the player a bone and not making them backtrack to the start might be nicer; in retrospect, it makes the completion a little too jarring

@IDidGame - I think you're right, a little cooldown / power meter would help visually explain the 'shoot cooldown' going on under the hood.

@TacomaBert - yeah, the enemies will _absolutely_ follow you across 'screens', and can float over / through scenery that you can't - I wanted to make them like red heads in RE:Make. if you're within a certain distance, they will unrelentingly chase you, if you're not they'll mosey on back to their spawn

jushiip 2017-05-01 18:27

Nice, reminded me a bit of the first Zelda.

This is not supposed to happen after beating the game.. right? :D

mrnyarlathotep 2017-05-01 18:34

@jushiip - yeah, the method I use to fake that zelda style 'flick camera' gets very confused by the fullscreen button if its used before that method is called

chronosv2 2017-05-01 19:34

The game looks like Commander Keen and an overhead shooter were combined for a fun experience. The only issue I really had was that the camera didn't switch to some screens for a little while after I moved offscreen. It was a minor issue but one that was was easy to get past.

Keep up the great work!

teekeks 2017-05-01 21:13

This game has something to it. But I agree with @marek77 (lol) that the controls where a bit strange

overmolo 2017-05-02 11:53

Easy to play, fast to understand. A quick adventure not very difficult to finish. The enemies can cross the walls but it's not a problem. It could have more background and story. Nice work ;-)

unit684 2017-05-02 12:58

Really nice visuals and a great game feel. The sounds were good too, but I had to turn it down a bit after killing the first monster.

I'd like some kind of level map so I can see where I've been but otherwise I really like it!

mrspeaker 2017-05-02 16:41

I won (but lost my no claim bonus :)). I liked it all except for that screen where you had to zig-zag back and forward like you were in the line at the airport. That's not fun in the airport, and not fun in a game xD. Those alien characters are pretty creepy too.

Great effort!

pandakipu 2017-05-02 21:58

Good job, it was a funny game, maybe the little astronaut could walk a little faster :)

piscythe 2017-05-03 05:16

I like the open world exploration style and the assets were nice. On the downside, the controls on the whole felt sluggish. I had no problems with the strafing mechanic, it was the low speed of pretty much everything the character did that got to me. The "dead end" and graveyard were nice touches. I especially liked how you left a gravestone next to the graveyard key to hint to the player that the key went to the graveyard door.

makenai 2017-05-03 18:43

Pretty cool! Reminds me a bit of Commander Keen. I wasn't expecting monsters to follow me across screens. I also think the shoot timing is a little off - that is, sometimes you hit spacebar and it doesn't shoot, so you need to hold it to make sure it's read. I likes seeing the literal edge of the world too. Nicely done!

kasarun 2017-05-03 21:34

I had the zelda ost in my head while playing it

The hero is so cute, i'm just a little disappointed for it not being animated but graphics are great ! Enemies fade out in a explosion, so i was expecting here a BOOM instead of a PIUU.

I think ending when you got all items is good (to prevent player to do useless moves back to the vessel), but something like a big rush with enemies spawning and you have to run back to your vessel (or a countdown based on your position when you take the last item) could increase pressure before the end.

Overall, great entry, I had much fun playing it.

ekkiiiii 2017-05-05 11:56

Nice graphics and sound effects! Not sure if the controls felt sluggish because of poor WebGL performance on my laptop but I feel like that would be the part where the game could be improved most. Not much of an issue because the enemy behaviour felt fair and saved the balancing :)

x1212 2017-05-06 13:09

Nice! Only had some issues due to the long cooldown for shooting and sometimes nearly getting stuck on the edges between two parts of the map and then having to blindly walking random directions hoping to get back ... Also: is that losing the no claim bonus thing at the supposed to mean something / are there other endings?

mrnyarlathotep 2017-05-07 15:08

@x1212 - nope, that's just my little joke about car insurance!

markusfisch 2017-05-18 19:22

Did it! :) Really love that type of game and yours is really fun to explore. Couldn't stop until I had all items.

tygrak 2021-05-02 11:39

Nice game. I liked exploring the whole map. Being able to strafe while shooting was pretty cool. Wish there were more types of enemies, but it's of course understandable for compo games :). Good job! (I have no idea how I got to this game, guess I confused 38 with 48 haha.)
