The game and graphics is too plain. The game is also too hard since the black bugs are fast and sometimes spawn near you but for a game made in 6 hours this is actually great. This game could improve if given more time.

epicsoft 2017-05-01 22:15

I agree with @kristian-david , but I like hard games and I enjoyed playing this. Don't ask me for my score, it's shame... 😵

numnumdude 2017-05-01 22:18

The graphics are boring, and the game isn't interesting at all. The spawning is broken and the firing sound is annoying. You also should never have to list off bugs to everyone before they play, most of the game page is just you doing that. But I guess you didn't have much time at all, so at least you tried. Good job, I can't wait to see it polished up.

simplepotential 2017-05-01 22:23

@numnumdude - I agree fully! When it comes to bugs, I try to squash them all before hand but this Jam weekend just did not want to cooperate :disappointed:

ropedog 2017-05-02 01:01

Hey there! I see what you're going for here, and I do think it has potential. The mechanics that are in place are solid, and I think you're headed in the right direction. It looks like you had to scrap your original card-game idea, which is a bummer. I'm glad you still put this out!

makenai 2017-05-02 04:27

"I'm sure there are more than a few bugs." - funny! I couldn't get this to work as I have a mac and cmd-click didn't accurately simulate a right click. This is a pretty decent effort for just 6 hours! Reminds me of the fly swatting game in Mario paint a little.

micahcowan 2017-05-02 08:43

Yeah, a bit extra-rough for mac users, especially on a MacBook. Two-fingered clicking does right click, but apparently not reliably enough to get far in the game (not to mention how overwhelming the black ants can be).

But I know how it can be when you have to scrap your project and start something new from scratch, and this game's pretty impressive for six hours' work! Congratulations on finish a game for Ludum Dare!

simplepotential 2017-05-02 17:33

@makenai and @micahcowan, thank you for pointing out the Mac issue, I hadn't considered that and with fix it.

aaranos 2017-05-03 00:46

You missed a wonderful opportunity to add a lighter to the bug spray. Maybe a flamethrower effect when you kill so many bugs.

It's not bad for a last minute creation. I was surprised when it went from one ant to suddenly like 20. Making use of the time as health was also a creative way to make variable scores.

rongo-matane 2017-05-03 17:56

For 6 hours, it's really decent. I'm sorry, other than that it's not really much fun. The sound effect for spraying is really unpleasant. But good on you for finishing a game as LD entry!

mandarad 2017-05-06 20:55

Pretty good for such a short time. I recommend varying the pitch of the spray sound next time as it can get quite harsh.

simplepotential 2017-05-06 23:54

@mandarad - Yeah, sound was the last thing I did with not much time to spare. I have some small updates planned once I get some time away from work.

la-mecanique-du-plastique 2017-05-09 09:21

Unfortunately I wasn't able to play your game correctly , the right click on my mac didn't had the proper result and the shooting didn't occur as I planned. But seeing the graphics and animations, rather simple but pretty effective, I think you did a good job if you managed to produce something that decent in only 6 hours, So RIP your card game and well done on this one !

simplepotential 2017-05-09 21:23

I'm going to do my best to have a Mac friendly version out soon! Lesson learned for sure!

slowian 2017-05-13 23:16

Even if it was 6 hours, you've managed to create a playable game from start to finish with highscores. Good work. I've managed to get to 1410 score. Also, thank you for providing the description for all of the bugs. It was helpful knowing why the timer decreases when no ants were approaching, and that there is highscore. I'm looking forward to new features.

simplepotential 2017-05-13 23:34

@slowian - Thank you! I just need to get some time away from work. Probably June before I can get anything new in.

josh-riley 2017-05-14 00:26

I had a lot of issues with right clicking to fire (my browser kept trying to scroll and bring up pop up menus. I'm sure this wouldn't have been an issue on the downloaded version, but I thought it was worth mentioning. I actually like a lot of the sprite work and the direction you were headed, but it's fairly obvious that you just ran out of time, which is understandable. Maybe some thing to think about if you go forward (aside from bug fixing) would be a little more variance in enemies? Maybe some different movement patterns, etc., instead of just more hit points?

devpaul 2017-05-14 00:26

@simplepotential This not a bad game! Especially if you did it in 6 hours, I mean I worked on [my game](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/small-world-transport) almost 3 days and its barely functional. ^_^'

If you want to make a better post jam game, you definitely need to create a safe zone around the spray can, where no bug can spawn. Also I would advise you to change the background from this monotonous dotted landscape to something more varied like a picnic table or something. As for the spawning of the bugs you could draw a growing shadow just before they spawn, so it would look like they are falling. And you should change the speed of the ants to be a random value, so it would make the game less predictable.

Also I think a some kind of leaderboards could help to make people play your game more!

Anyways nice game my best score was 6750!

arch-a-type 2017-05-14 00:32

This would make a great mobile game. I like that you made the red ants slower and that you penalize the player, so they won't just spray shots everywhere.

It would be awesome to add more insects and add ones that increase the timer by more. The spawns are a bit much especially at the beginning (I had this problem with my game). I would of like to have seen the bugs broken down into waves. It would be nice to ease into the difficulty. You should add different power ups and stuff. If you add a little bit more music and stuff you could slap this on android or iOS!

Sorry about your card game, but congrats on making a game in 6 hours! :)

"I'm sure there are more than a few bugs." Hey now...this game *is* a major bug infestation. XD

I like the idea of linking the life to time, and shooting bugs gives more time. I didn't really think it was smooth enough to incorporate penalties such as taking away time for missing a bug. If you're going to do that, I would suggest starting with some bugs with bigger hitboxes, and then gradually adding in bugs with smaller hitboxes to make it harder. And I guess there's nothing wrong with using the right mouse button to shoot, but it's just like, *why*? Well I think maybe Mac users might have trouble. Also, the bugs spawning not on the outsides of the screen was quite irritating, but most of the time, I couldn't really tell what was going on.

Overall, it was an all right idea. It did feel a little rushed, but I can see that you were scrapped for time in this. At the very least, you have something playable, with sound effects to boot.

kate-kligman 2017-05-14 01:30

Hey, it shipped! :) I like the background, it gives the impression the user is on a counter-top or kitchen-like floor area and makes it easy to see the ants. The gameplay is simple and works.

ajayajayaj 2017-05-14 01:36

Nice game, very good for 6 hours! This is much better than I imagined seeing your post saying "it's the worst game you'll play this year". I really liked it. The idea is really cool, and very challenging with the bugs coming so quickly.

I think with some improvements (if you had more time), this could be an amazing game! With some music, a few more bug types, and maybe other weapon types, it could be really cool. Good Job!

Also, I wish there was a limit to the speed you could shoot (and then you could lower the ant spawn rate). This would make the game feel like it requires more skill.

kunonooni 2017-05-14 01:51

I've been there. Your original idea doesn't pan out so you scramble to make anything. For what it is, its good. Of course it can be improved. I didn't mind the sounds so much as them getting cut off. It seemed like the sound of the sprayer was cutting off the sound of the ants dying. This might be caused from only having one audio source in the scene.

The screen was kinda barren and with the ants just popping in it kinda ruined the immersion but that doesn't make it a bad game. The mechanics were solid and it had a goal and an ending with a saved high score no less. This was a good job for only 6 hours.

Your art is great and at first I didn't realize the ants didn't have a walking animation. It was only after a few playthroughs that I realized this. So it really didn't hurt the game in my opinion. Yeah I have to say I really liked the game. With some polish and balancing you'd have something really cool on your hands.

pcmaster 2017-05-14 09:17

I scored ony 1250 :) It's a bit hard when the bugs appear very close to you. Otherwise good for 6 hours! I didn't hear the sound in WebGL but it works on Windows... and it's "intense" :) The right-shooting was a bit of a surprise :)

simplepotential 2017-05-14 11:19

@kate-kligman - Regarding the floor, you hit spot on what I was going for. It is suppose to be a kitchen but the texture ended up being to small to convey it was well as I had hoped.

@kunonooni - Regarding the sound cutting off, you are absolutely correct. I have a single sound manager for the whole game with a single source. Usually I do this sort of thing with a sound manager but with each individual object having it's own audio source so that they can all play at the same time. It was a last minute addition though as I know sound is one of those things I count off for when playing a game if it doesn't have any.

@EveryoneElse - Thanks You!

ccglp 2017-05-16 11:31

Why the right click button instead of the left click? xD Good try, but seems not finished. Understandable knowing that u have only 6 hours of work.

simplepotential 2017-05-16 11:36

@ccglp - bad decision on my part. My left mouse button gets used a lot and tends go bad, so I was giving it a break :)

gael-philippe 2017-05-16 14:32

I say it's pretty neat for a 6 hours job !

lavwa 2017-05-20 01:27

You did that in 6 hours ? Awesome work ! I mean you create a whole game, in a LD context that's amazing. Great work !
