LD38 — A Small World

Tableworld. by Gunschlinger 2017-05-14T00:52:15Z

Nice game concept you have here. I like the fact that you do not have to build he houses yourself, although this does provide problems in the later stages of the game when you start running out of space. The graphics and music are decent. It is fun to build up the village and amass money (I am poor in RL D:)!

I noticed that the fields disappear sometimes, but the wells do not. This creates difficult situations when you need to place other objects where the wells are. You can also place a bunch of wells everywhere and not be able to build anything (Although I don't think the player would do this.) Also I'm not sure how far the wells or fields reach, is it the whole village or a certain area? Would be good to let the player know.

This is a good jam game though! Good work!

Falling ground by Mr. Chelnoque 2017-05-14T01:58:29Z

Wow, you definitely put together a nice game. Your use of audio and effects is amazing. The game is immersive and the scenery and sprites fit together so well. I love the atmosphere, it makes me interested in the world and how it fell into such a state. I'm going to go against the grain and say I did like that you didn't give any indication of where to go at the beginning. It feels more open this way. This is just my opinion though.

I enjoyed the whole game, but there were points when the collisions were off and I got stuck once or twice during the boss fight. There is no indication of danger while failing and the lack of direction could leave players confused in the beginning, again though I didn't mind this. You might want to add something letting the player know to collect hearts. As others have said not too sure how it fits in with the theme, but nonetheless it still is a good game.

The boss was difficult, but I managed to finish and I'm glad I did. I really enjoyed this entry. Great job!

The Adventurer Davidson by Hlavik 2017-05-10T23:24:26Z

Interesting concept. I liked the mechanics, switching gravity can be fun. I would personally recommend that you don't allow the player to stop so it adds a bit to difficulty, but this is just a personal preference. The only problem I had was that I kept dying when I spawned in rooms with the lava pit or the risen spikes. It felt like I didn't have enough time to jump.

Nice game though. :)

Krilgor by Sheepolution 2017-05-13T17:55:41Z

I really enjoyed this, I loved the fact that you have to control the magnifying glass and the tweezers, while guiding your little friend through puzzles. Concept was very well done. The Art and effects were quite amazing as well. You have a thing for dialogue and puns. (..and I'm a sucker for a good pun)

It would of been nice to have a key to return the magnifying glass to your tiny friend, but the arrow is a nice touch so you don't lose him. :)

Catsorbed by IgorsGames 2017-05-11T00:21:46Z

Played it until the end. I liked hidden platforms they added a nice touch to the game. Clicking and dragging the fireflies was my only issue. Many times when I tried to click and drag them they would reset, and they moved so slow. Loved the ending cut scene! Great Job!

Alysson by Jod 2017-05-14T03:56:11Z

Good visual novel game. The story telling was great as the plot moved forward. The story become more intense, with each progressing chapter, and while it moves quickly I did not feel too rushed. It was a great story and even though it was serious, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I would add some music to each chapter as the player experiences them. You could really change the whole experience by adding music that changes as the main character moves through the story, especially music that fits the mood. Other than the typos, this is a pretty solid entry.

Great job!

Parvus Mundi by Antiwrapper 2017-05-14T12:16:04Z

You have a great concept I like that the platforms shrink if you stand on them to long. The difficulty curve is nice and I found it to be just about right. I see that you are using the Godot engine as well! :) The controls and physics are great, I had no problems navigating my block around the world.

Like others have said adding some cool sound effects and music would make this game amazing. Especially if parts of the stage went along with the audio beat. Adding different shaped enemies that are faster or slower and have different movement patterns would be awesome and changing up levels after a certain score would be a nice touch.

Always nice to see other Godot users! Great job!

Pip Sweep by WeaverDeveloper 2017-05-11T19:05:20Z

Wow, I didn't know what to expect at first, but this was one of the best games I've played this jam (Definitely top 5)

I loved the opening cut scene and dialogue. The characters on the planet were a nice addition, some of exchanges you have with them made me laugh.(Especially the guy with the cows.)

Game play was a bit weird at first, but after getting used to the controls I enjoyed it. (Picking up cows and flinging them was fun, until I realized I had to collect them all again. lol) Puzzle difficulty was great. I never got confused or lost when trying to complete one.

This was a well polished game and it shows. Your team did a great job.

The only thing I would of added an option to strafe, as turning the ship can be tedious at times. The mini map was a nice touch though.

Dr. Plumb by phi 2017-05-14T02:33:10Z

A nice puzzle game! As you have it on mobile, I'm not going say that this would make an amazing mobile game, but it totally would. The head-scratching and thinking that go into solving the puzzles it pretty awesome. I love the sounds and music, as they fit the game quite well. The effects and animations are well done!

The difficulty spike was high after I got past a few stages, it would be nice to have a system of hints for when the player is stuck on a hard level. I would also change the font, as some of the text was hard to read when I messed up, although it was funny when blood spewed out of the patients veins. (Good thing it is just a game!)

Great job!

Exoman by Rother Games 2017-05-13T18:29:03Z

Very nice game, the sprites and effects are great, especially the crumbling buildings! You have a good core concept and the controls and game play are very solid. I like that you can upgrade the stats after each level, nice touch.

I would add some more variety to the levels and some more enemies. You could add tanks, helicopters, jets, even another big monster if you wanted!

Higher Ground by LandoSystems 2017-05-13T17:32:57Z

Impressive work! I love the strategy involved with this game. The hex tile and the sprites look very good. The game play is very smooth. The audio and music are also very well done and enhance the game play experience.

It would be nice to see some more game play mechanics, like predators that can eat your villagers. Other than that I don't have too much. This game is pretty solid as far as everything else goes.

Spider Collider by mooncalf 2017-05-13T19:19:15Z

What an addictive game! I love the mechanics and game play of this! It is surprisingly simple yet well constructed. I loved the effects and the sprites. Adding different speed orbs was a nice touch to the game play and difficulty itself, as well as the grappling. This game is super easy to pick up and play. I may be an outlier, but I enjoyed the music. Although, it may be a good idea to switch up the color and music every couple of stages though. :)

I had times when I would move between to planets and die even when they were still, not sure if that was intended, but it is weird. Spamming jump works on a lot of levels, because once you reach zero it doesn't matter what happens as long as you land. Maybe add a second or two that the player has to stay alive after the final landing. Also, I think it may be a good idea to count the jumps as long as the player lands on a different planet, but it is just a suggestion.

Good job!

Bad Panda 2 by Pandakipu 2017-05-11T00:40:38Z

There is potential here. It is frustrating to die. Not a fun frustrating, especially when you have to pick between paths without knowing if it is a dead end. The music is interesting, but not anything too special. As others have said the hit boxes feel off and dying feels unfair most of the time. Also, dying in the beginning and having to re-acquire the weapon is tedious. My solution would be to start the player in the cave with the weapon so they have to run into it. I did enjoy this game once I got the hang of everything. I love the art. :)

Bacteria colony by Psilon 2017-05-17T23:27:42Z

Very good concept. I liked that you added more than one resource. Also the animations are cute and I love the art. The game play and pacing is very good, I got through 10 aliens, and never felt it was too difficult.

I had trouble get used to gathering resources at a certain point. I was generating them faster than I could click. It is just a suggestion, but you may want the harvesters auto harvest and if you click them they work faster, that way the player can still click when there is down time. Even though there is no sound in space I would of loved some silly music for this. :)

Great job!

Insect Attack by SimplePotential 2017-05-14T00:32:17Z

This would make a great mobile game. I like that you made the red ants slower and that you penalize the player, so they won't just spray shots everywhere.

It would be awesome to add more insects and add ones that increase the timer by more. The spawns are a bit much especially at the beginning (I had this problem with my game). I would of like to have seen the bugs broken down into waves. It would be nice to ease into the difficulty. You should add different power ups and stuff. If you add a little bit more music and stuff you could slap this on android or iOS!

Sorry about your card game, but congrats on making a game in 6 hours! :)

Pocket World by BtheDestroyer 2017-05-13T16:58:34Z

I love the game boy effect, quite well done. I enjoyed the resource collecting and game play. Your game is very polished and nice. The artwork and sprites are great, I loved this aspect of the game and it was very well done.

I would of liked for there to have been different music, but I understand limitations and such. Also, repeatedly clicking the mouse to harvest items proved tedious after a while. It would of been nice to hold the mouse and have the player auto-harvest.

Good job!

No One's Planet by Kate Kligman 2017-05-14T11:56:51Z

A terminal game! I used to play NetHack a long long time ago. You guys did a great job on this one. The design was great, and I like how the monsters were represented. The quibs from your employer added a great bit of humor to the game and were placed nicely.

I would of made the player move more space per move, and maybe added a countdown timer option for solving the puzzles, just provide a sense of urgency. You could even added a scoring system based on how well of a job you did.

Good job, very unique game!

Chill Bill by drtizzle 2017-05-11T03:18:02Z

Incredible graphics and audio. I wish it was a bit easier for me, but I am not good at these kind of games. It would be nice to get some type of power ups, during game play randomly, (Bigger sword, unlimited energy for a short time, or x2 stress relief from kills), but it is just a suggestion. Great work. :)

Asymmetry by ChuiGum 2017-05-13T18:10:27Z

Very fun, you took a simple concept and added I lot of variety through the different areas effect. The music and sounds effect are well placed. Even though the sprites are very simple I loved the effects you uses when changing areas. This was well done.

The bullets and enemies should be a different shape much like everyone else said. I never had a problem figuring out where I was, but the bullets and enemies are sometimes indistinguishable. I would of liked to see more levels and different types of enemies, but since we had such a strict time limit, I understand.

Great job!

PlacidTeleCave by madsj 2017-05-17T13:48:32Z

Very difficult and very fun! I had some trouble getting started, but once I did I had a bunch of fun. You have a great idea here. The variety of power ups and their various effects are a solid point of this game. Also, understanding the teleport mechanic, and how it works is pivotal to performing well, a very interesting mechanic that is worth mentioning.

For me the controls took some getting used to at first, but I was able to stay alive once I played a bit more. I didn't realize I had a target cursor until like halfway through the game, maybe make it stand out a little bit more?

Not too much I would change. It seems like you already have a good start. :)

Badass Hobo by freyby 2017-05-17T23:53:25Z

The title of this game brought me here. :)

Fun concept! I like the different power up items and such, added a unique feel to the game. Also who doesn't want to be a badass hobo with a gun!? Really easy to pick up and play.

I wish there was a way other than using items to dodge enemy bullets, I don't know if I missed the jump button, but I couldn't find it. This game is pretty bare bones as well, and it was difficult to understand what each item did. You may want to add a short tutorial on how to use each of the items (I wish I had done this for my game with the stats).

Fun entry!

S P A C E C H U N K by nonameghost 2017-05-11T18:29:30Z

You've done a great job with the atmosphere of the game. The effects, graphics, and music fit together quite well.

I love using the Linux terminal, so the addition was quite welcome. I can imagine if the game was bigger it would make great use of this asset.

I would of loved for more game play, but time constraints. :)

Maybe I missed it, but it would be cool if there was a key shortcut to return the cursor to the terminal quickly.

I really hope you work on this more. I would be interested to see what it looks like when it is finally finished. Great job.

Last day of the woods by Redblack Spade 2017-05-11T01:50:26Z

Wow... that was an incredible game. Amazing concept and idea. I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it. I can't really think of anything to change other than if you could speed up the time it takes to teleport back to a save if you die a lot. The speed was okay at first, but after repeated deaths at certain points it was a tiny bit annoying. It may give players time to think what they did wrong, so it could also be a good thing. Great job! Thank you for making this. :D

Acquaintances by RodrigoNietiedt 2017-05-13T17:42:12Z

Nice concept! It didn't take me long to figure out what was going on, but I wasn't sure what to do on the opening level. I like the audio track and the crowd talking ambience. You used those items well! The achievements is a nice touch as well.

I know it's been said before, along with all the other comments, I would of loved to have seen people moving, a scene where you have to find a familiar friend, or even a group of friends. There is a lot you could add to this to make it more interactive.

Nice little game! :)

Tiny Ranger by Crimid 2017-05-14T01:08:13Z

I like that you attempted to make different areas for the game, I enjoy metroidvania games a lot. The sprites are okay, and enjoyed he fast paced music, it would of been nice for it to change when you entered different areas, but we only have so much time during a jam. I can see that you gave the enemies different attributes and different movement paths to add variety, nice touch.

These items may have been mentioned before, but this game throws a lot at you at once. There are dozen of enemies in the first few moments of the game. I didn't know where my health was or how much I had, which didn't allow to gauge how dangerous enemies were. The controls are a bit hard to get used to as well, and sometimes it was better to just run away from enemies, then to shoot them at all.

Good job, there are some issues to be fixed, but this a nice start. You said that you would continue development, I would like to see what the game looks like when it is finished.

Naziverse by furazin 2017-05-11T01:03:11Z

A very interesting entry. I enjoyed kicking Nazi and vegan butt, although I feel like the time between bullets flying on the screen was a bit too short. Very straight-forward game play. I loved the artwork and humor of your game though. :)

Tiny Hero by arch-a-type 2017-05-12T18:26:17Z

Hey Everyone thanks for the feedback!

I wasn't sure how the balancing was going to turn out and the mechanics aren't clear from the start, which probably can cause some confusion. Thanks for trying it though!

@rjhelms The author doesn't have an attrition symbol on his site, but you may use his resources (commercially/non-commercially) with any creation tool. Except for the undead battler graphic of the guy who looks like a red mage, because he is somewhat similar to a battler in one of the monster assets in RPG Maker 2003. Credit is not required, but would be nice. You can find his terms at the top link of the material page.

@skosnowich I thought about making the hero walk across the map, but with the time limit I couldn't make that happen. Sorry! :(

Tiny Hero by arch-a-type 2017-05-14T04:22:21Z

Thanks, for the feedback guys. :)

@kate-kligman Thanks for letting me know. Godot has problems with it's HTML5 export sometimes and things end up not working. I can try to work on an OSX build tonight and upload to itch.io tonight or early tomorrow morning for you (It takes some time to build on my mac mini from 2009). Sorry for the inconvenience! D:

Limited Space by Vidinu 2017-05-11T00:56:14Z

Best game I have played yet. Loved the music and atmosphere. It took me a couple of plays to figure out what was going on, but I liked the game play. I didn't really have too much I didn't like about this, although I would of made the bullets larger. It is very difficult to seem them sometimes. Great Job!

It would be cool to see (in the future) :) -Enemy space ships that shoot at you. -Bonus time items. -Ultra rare resource spawn like +2water/+3water. -Upgrade your ship with resources that collected. -Recruit more space dudes. -Space dudes can die during resource gathering if trying to collect rare resources.

Meteor Mania by Selgeron 2017-05-13T18:44:10Z

Very good concept. The sprites and effects are well done. I enjoyed the game play, and music. You did a great job on the mechanics, The different weapons are a nice touch. Everything is this game fits together, you have a good cohesive game. It is immediately clear what is going on.

It was hard to see the meteors sometimes and I wouldn't be able to get to them if they falling on my opposite side. It would of been cool to switch between weapons instead of having just one, either that make a way to not take upgrades.

Blobbery by Odefus 2017-05-17T23:38:51Z

This was a very interesting platformer. I had to get used to the idea of holding jumps, but I think that was pretty cool how you switched it up. I am so used to traditional platformers. I liked the artwork, you did a decent job with sprites. Controls were also easy to get used to.

The level design was okay, I like that you had the spikey guys, I would of loved for more enemies or more mechanics, but 72 hours is such small time frame. You may want to try doing smaller shorter levels that introduce new mechanics along the way. Big levels can overwhelm some players and they will feel lost. The only other thing I would add are death conditions. :)

Good job!

Just Another Pocket Universe by Owen Davies 2017-05-13T16:30:39Z

Wow, I can't believe you used java to make this. :)

The game play is very smooth and I have no problem with the controls or moving around. I added a bunch humans and science tables and experienced no slowdown whatsoever. I get what you were going after even if it is not complete.

The graphics are a nice touch, they remind me of old dos games that I used to play.

It would be nice to bind some keys to opening the menus. It is tedious to have to click the close button every time I open a menu, but maybe you are going to add this feature later.

Great effort! :)

_Save_ by iamteekay 2017-05-13T19:00:02Z

You have a great concept here. The controls are solid and game play is fast paced and fun. I like the sounds effect and explosions. I love the way you used the sprites and the entire retro feel. The art is very well done. The power ups are a nice touch and they help a lot.

Sometimes it was troublesome having the laser at times as it drained the planet's health quite fast. I like that the ship is invincible, but at times it feels a bit off, like I can fly through whatever I want, it may be a good idea to punish the player (not for too long) for getting hit. I would suggest having the enemies come in waves as it give the player time to recoup, and you can introduce new enemies and such. This is just a suggestion though. It would be nice to have some music as well. :D

Great job! :)

LD39 — Running out of Power

Qwt by gentoogames 2017-08-06T16:06:51Z

The visuals and music are great. I really liked the title theme. The animations and effects are very well done. I see where you were trying to go with game play mechanics, I think if you build on this you can make this into a great game.

It is a bit hard to understand what to do. A lot of times I felt like I was just running around with no real sense of direction. Also it may help to downsize the initial maps as the player is just getting used to the game and large areas may overwhelm them. I hope to see more with this, you have got a very nice looking entry!

Solar Miner by mrboxbox 2017-08-06T17:13:07Z

Nice job! This game had a really good and cohesive design. It is quite easy to pick up and play. The controls were weird for me at first, but after playing for a bit I got used to them. The different weapons and power ups were a nice touch.

I think it may get easy for a player to get lost once they start going in deeper. You may want to add rest points so the player doesn't have to travel back to the start every time they need to refill their power. Great entry!

Running out of Power Inc. by stuffed wombat 2017-08-13T03:15:49Z

Great game, I enjoyed this one. Like others I really enjoyed the commentary. I loved that you made it change when you jumped. I jumped to make sure I wasn't missing anything. I don't know if I got a good grasp of what was going on, but it was well done.

I had a difficult time with some of the spikes in some areas, but your level design was good, and I didn't get too frustrated, because of how small the rooms were. (good job! I still have trouble with this.) I would of liked to have heard some music, but that is just my opinion. Great Job!

Game of Cogs by Luke Perkin 2017-08-06T15:47:55Z

I like what you have got here. The artwork and game play is nice. I love the conversations and dialogue. You have got a great concept and everything fits well together. I love the characters they are very well done. It is pretty funny when two get on the same square and converse.

I had trouble getting started at first, but once I figured out what was going on I didn't have to much trouble. Since you are being presented with a lot of information (names, etc) it might by nice to have objectives to let the player know what they should be doing. Good work!

Night Light by arch-a-type 2017-08-08T02:20:28Z

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I'll admit I did make the game waaaay to hard from the start. I wished we had more time for testing, but I tried to make the levels difficult, but doable, which was my error. I am used to playing old platformers with absurd difficulty like mega man 1~10, ninja gaiden, tmnt(the original with the water stage), ristar, and super mario bros: the lost levels. So it is probably, not so good that I was the only person testing the levels. (My girlfriend played after the contest submission was over and she was mad at me that the levels were so hard. :0) At one point Hard was the only difficulty, but after some careful consideration I tried to make a level below that. (In normal you can cheese the lights by falling into pits if the monster is close to coming out.)

@chaoikza Thanks for the detailed review! Sorry about the difficulty, thanks for the videos though! I remember watching a videos on some teens playing the original mega man and realizing how difficult of a game that it was. These were the games I played growing up. :)

Flashlight by BelowParallel_Ian 2017-08-06T18:20:57Z

I like the idea. It was a pretty simple an easy to play game. I didn't have any problems with the controls. It was good that you added a different type of enemy. Didn't have any problem finishing it.

I would make the flash light area extend to a cone. Also some effects and music would be a nice touch. (You could make the monsters sounds get louder as you approach them.) This is a good start!

Space Survival by TheAspiringHacker 2017-08-13T03:01:46Z

I like the idea you have here. The graphics are okay, and I didn't have any issues with the controls. The mechanics are simple and easy to understand, which makes picking the game up and playing it easy. Also, it's always good to see another Godot user!

Like the others have said there are quite a few balancing issues. The ship's gun is not really usable, and turning is very slow. This could be a very simple and fun game with some re-balancing and polish. Good job!

Mecha Testing Ground by Spitfireleet 2017-08-06T18:32:08Z

I like the ease of play. You have got the controls down, and the effects are pretty nice. I like the PICO-8 graphics. The whole retro style feels nice and the effects and the graphics fit well together.

I will agree with other comments it does need more variation and some sort of objective. Some risk/reward elements would be a nice touch. Maybe add some different simulations (like dodge incoming targets, hit all targets, etc) Great start though!

Station Zeta by Olezen 2017-08-06T07:28:29Z

I like the concept of the game. You have a good idea, the limited amount of ammo makes the experience very nerve wracking sometimes and the monster screams are pretty scary (in a good way!). The art is good and I like the atmosphere. Not being able to kill the monsters in the beginning can be a bit off setting given how fast they can run. I would make the monsters a bit slower as if they run up on you it is nearly impossible to dodge them. Also it is not entirely clear where to go sometimes. You may want to add an indicator arrow to point where the objective is. It was a fun experience! Good job!
