LD38 — A Small World

Terraform by ijzm 2017-04-25T04:54:56Z

Positives:

* Great music.

* Nice sprite work.

* Buildings can't overlap.

* Pretty good random generation.

Negatives:

* Poor performance (maybe it was just my browser)

* Help menu didn't work (again, maybe just my browser)

* Not much variance. Just going out and collecting 3 materials and then coming back to build more houses and defend them. It may have been more work to implement, but creating NPCs that would actually show up around houses rather than just an arbitrary number would have been magnitudes better. Maybe you could even give those NPCs jobs to accelerate the late-game (miner, woodcutter, defender, etc.)

* Random generation was alright but could have been better. This kind of ties into the above point where if there were more things to get (cactus, different ore, plants/herbs, etc.), it would have been far more interesting.

Overall, not bad, but could have been better. If I could score it right now, it'd get a 6/10 (For reference: Minecraft is a 9/10, Oniken is a 5/10, Flappy Bird is a 3/10)

My one complaint looking at screenshots: Why do commands have a / before them? The rest of the consoles look like Linux, so why a slash?

Mind's Eye by Kosmo 2017-04-25T04:24:31Z

Unique take on an RTS, gotta say. I do have to ask, though: When is not attacking good? Whenever you add something to your game, make sure there's a reason to have it there. If I can just do a small attack every turn without penalty, why would I choose to not do at least that?

Other than that, and some UI stuff (I thought I could no longer attack once the attack screen went statiky and I never knew how much health I had), this is a solid entry, though I don't know how much this fits the overall theme of "it's a small world." I get that you're a tiny guy, but the inside of Big Man's head doesn't really feel like a world. I get that Big Man's view is tiny, but just because your screen is tiny doesn't really mean much.

Overall, nice work :)

I... don't think this really qualifies as "making a game."

The puzzle game aspect is really interesting and caught me off guard, but I can see another game that leans more into the puzzle aspect rather than the arcade-score aspect working extremely well.

On the technical side, there were a few bugs and rough edges that I think could be ironed out if there was a follow-up version. Specifically:

- The red text is hard to see - The timer (seconds) should be padded with 0s (eg: 2:05, not 2:5) - Movement being timer-based felt a bit awkward, especially when I was trying to go for high scores - The music ended a bit before the level timer

The funky movement of multiple characters isn't something I've seen in a LD before and led me to have to think on my feet basically the whole time :smile:

Really neat idea, but not the strongest execution. Specifically, having to constantly click "Grow" became really annoying fairly quickly. Some hotkeys and the ability for time to pass automatically (maybe even with a slider to set the speed) would have gone a long way with this.

Overall, definitely a game with a lot of room to grow that I can see a lot of people enjoying. I can totally see this having a bunch of different plant types and interactions in a more fleshed out version.

Super fun, I just wish there were checkpoints every few waves :sweat_smile:.

I loved the voice lines, but wanted some SFX variation. You used FMOD (wise choice), so take advantage of what features that gives you!

Pretty cool idea to have a bullet hell with only melee attacks for the player - I don't think I've seen that before. I just wish I could either attack a bit more frequently or at least have an idea of *where* I'd end up dashing to when I attack so my infrequent attacks wouldn't get wasted as often.

Seed of hate by OldDog 2023-01-10T20:51:45Z

There are some layering issues and it seems like there's a grey rectangle on the right? I seemed to be able to draw cards from the "deck" in the top right, but placing them anywhere did nothing. I also would have liked if the numbers on the cards had more impact on the gameplay. Like, maybe if higher numbers *needed* to be in a stack, the number could be the value (damage, healing, block) as well since now a "7" card is both powerful *and* difficult to play. The lack of audio was a *serious* detriment to the experience, though... Temp.png

*However*, I dig the concept as one of the 3 people who played Pocket Card Jockey and wish we had more "classic card game, but..." games.

Really great art, though some simple animations on everything would have made it way more clear how all of the interactions worked.

Maybe it's just me, but the tutorial wasn't *super* clear as to what I was supposed to do, but I was still able to complete a few levels so I must have done something right :sweat_smile: I think specific instructions in the tutorial (eg: Swap these two plants) and highlighting the results of my actions (eg: See how that made them grow faster?) would have helped.

The music and sound effects were spot on, though some variation in the sound effects and more of them would have helped. I don't think there was any sound when I actually scored points (or if there was, it didn't scale based on how many points I scored) which made it hard to tell intuitively if I was doing well.

Interesting idea for a tower defense game - reminds me of Planetary Annihilation in a way :smile:

Some negatives: the voice lines for sound effects were funny, but *way* too loud. I turned the volume up to hear the great music better, but then the first sound effect made me jump :pensive: It also wasn't clear enough as to what each plant did, so I had no way to properly make decisions. There also was just too much for me to try to keep track of; I had to constantly scroll around the screen looking for birds since there was no UI warning me where they were (though I *think* the red line at the edge of the screen told me the direction they were coming from?), I had to constantly check my plants to see if I could harvest them, and there were too many planets to manage them all at once...

Some positives: Music was great and the base concept was great! I really would like to see a future version of this with original art and more intuitive RTS controls and UI get made and released!

Alien Fruit Harvest by kossnocorp 2023-01-10T18:27:30Z

Not bad for your first ever jam!

I don't think that there was really a need for the acceleration/deceleration on the ground to be so low (ground movement is super slippery). I don't *love* super punishing games (I quit basically immediately after losing progress, which was still a few minutes of gameplay), but I do know there's an audience for that. Personally, I think some checkpoints in the form of doors that close when you pass certain points to keep you from falling *all* the way back down would have been nice and encouraged me to actually collect more stuff.

I did love that the player alien character had a little wobble whenever it started and stopped. I can't tell if that's physics based or just an animation, but either way it's super charming :smile:
