LD24 — Evolution

Living Tales by tinyworlds 2012-08-27T21:44:00

"Plants were eating plants in this cruel world" haha, what pathos!

i like this idea a LOT. the presentation is a bit crowded, it would be cool to see a version of this spread out more, say over a landscape or wider area.

Soul Jar by farmergnome 2012-08-27T02:03:00

I like this a lot! The increasing sense of danger approaching the crash site, the cute little robot, helping it out of pits, the production values are all great.

When I get near the end I'm not sure I understand what's damaging me though, I seem to die just for being near the site?

Dawn of Dimension by jplur 2012-09-05T21:59:00

ha, this is COOL

running around naked to that music is what makes this work

Terra Tam: The World Warrior by L 2012-08-27T22:13:00

you're so cool, L

i love this. ALL HAIL TERRA TAM, THE WORLD WARRIOR

Lepton's Quest by rustybroomhandle 2012-08-28T03:01:00

What an innovative way to make your set-pieces, fantastic job. This is the best looking game I've played so far. I like playing as a trod-upon kobold, what a resourceful little fellow...

Sidenote: pressing space reveals exits, useful for figuring out where to walk.

The Three Rituals by Birchmountain 2012-08-27T12:18:00

The floaty movement makes meaningful combat a bit difficult, but summoning things through typing is a really fun idea!

Ages of Irving by Deconstructeam 2012-09-07T23:28:00

5 stars for innovation--a rare entry in the strategy torture puzzler. the only other one i can think of is Beautiful Escape: Dungeoneer. looking forward to future projects!

Selectra by lazybraingames 2012-08-29T10:39:00

best alien amazon goddess game i've played so far...this is really cool and it's clear you put a lot of work into it, so much great stuff going on

Cosmogonie by Spotline 2012-09-04T11:44:00

Spotline, this is really cool. I'm sorry that some people would rather waste their time defining what makes something a game (that most tedious and pedantic of activities), but I'm happy that you spend yours actually making stirring games like this that push things forward. To the other people--emotion and innovation are just as vital to games as any other artform, the days of defining a game by achievements and the number of guns it has are over.

Vol by Thomas Bowker 2012-09-02T16:57:00

fantastic job! garish colors, blurring effect on being attacked, rudimentary sun, synth music, merging enemies, the burbling sound enemies make to alert you to their presence, control scheme--love it all.

Vol by Thomas Bowker 2012-09-03T07:02:00

i took what i thought was a particularly nice shot of one level--http://www.freeindiegam.es/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/vol1.png

LD24 X0ut by X-0ut 2012-08-31T13:37:00

very cool, i love the way cubes tumble at you instead of flying in rigid formation like most shootaz

Hunt'em! by Zamando 2012-08-30T06:51:00

GORGEOUS

sometimes you spawn in the middle of enemies and die without recourse, but besides that, i love the camera angles and sky and music and critters

Stickman Evolution by chaosBrick 2012-08-29T20:39:00

scariest thing i've played all comp

mutating stick figures falling from the sky is a great idea

i like the relentless garishness

Oneway by azurenimbus 2012-08-30T00:00:00

ah what a tricky little critter! your games are always interesting--i especially like the sound in this one

SeedStory by Saturnyn 2012-08-28T02:23:00

Pretty fun once I figured out how it worked. A plantigrade ate me! This would be better if dying once didn't restart the whole game.

Ancient Ruins by CappaGames 2012-08-30T17:38:00

i like the core premise--faster movement would improve this (power-ups disappear before you can reach them and dodging bullets is very difficult). the plant itself is great, i like seeing what evolves next, a very fun enemy.

God Called in Sick Today by tripleVisionGames 2012-08-31T10:38:00

the music makes this super creepy in a good way

The Best Dinosaur by TomSmizzle 2012-08-29T09:36:00

this comes together nicely in terms of gameplay/art/sound, whooohooo!! the fast movement speed makes the difficulty much more bearable. i like the different kinds of meteors--gamifying extinction.

The Best Dinosaur by TomSmizzle 2012-08-29T09:38:00

ahahaha oh my god the stage that looks deceptively easy...so funny

Revolution by BrothersT 2012-08-29T20:22:00

wow great job, the glowing forms and animations and the music are all fantastic. combat feels a bit samey but this idea has a lot of potential. i wonder if being able to jump across the circle or do other kinds of movements would add anything to it, make it more gymnastic instead of being bound to the ground.

Arcane Dungeons ( aka Evil Lord vs Angel for the salvation or perdition of a hero's soul) by Christina Antoinette Neofotistou 2012-08-29T03:46:00

this is fucking BEAUTIFUL

i want to see more games involving your art so bad

Darwin Games 2012 by Bemmu 2012-08-27T23:33:00

my cat is into nickelback and i need 1000 coins to melt them into a sword. narrative of the year imo

Darwin Games 2012 by Bemmu 2012-08-29T04:08:00

yeah that kind of stuff fascinates me so much, narrative + generator is one of my chief game design interests

Darwin Games 2012 by Bemmu 2012-08-29T04:09:00

you should definitely explore that!

Evolution Stew by vede 2012-08-29T10:02:00

I LOVE THIS. the graphics make it feel like a game for mac classic or something. what a great sandbox (goobox?).

Prance Prance Evolution by Josh Riley 2012-09-02T02:51:00

one thing that would improve this is a menu that listed all your horses at once in order to easily compare stats and make decisions. anyways, i'm glad to see a tycoon game in Ludum Dare, one of my favorite genres. there's something very satisfying about having a bunch of different creatures with names and characteristics that i can muck around with

Beyond Darkness by Raven IX 2012-08-29T04:44:00

i found jogging nonchalantly past hordes of slugs and chocolate-covered men to be quite funny...however, the chocolate-covered giant with spear hands stabbed me to death...what a world

Path to a New Species by vvinters 2012-08-29T10:14:00

may i recommend checking out Twine (if you want to make hyperlink fiction) or Inform 7 (parser-based fiction)? both can run through a browser and not only would you reach a larger audience, but you'd save yourself a lot of trouble. writing text adventure stuff in twine or inform is really satisfying and you can focus on the game itself rather than laboriously recreating something that already exists.

The Sky in the Room by Porpentine 2012-08-27T02:05:00

SÌ!!!!

The Sky in the Room by Porpentine 2012-08-29T21:46:00

why would you need to translate from italian when clicking on the italian translates it for you

The Sky in the Room by Porpentine 2012-09-02T23:44:00

Source code-wise, there is nothing wrong. Twine's regular source import function bugs out when I try to import Sky (could be the Italian text at the beginning), that's why I fell back on .rtf, which is a universal text format which can be opened by most word processors.

The Sky in the Room by Porpentine 2012-09-02T23:45:00

And thank you to everyone who appreciated Sky, you are why I write games.

The Sky in the Room by Porpentine 2012-09-03T02:37:00

not pissing is the highest praise i can think of!

The Sky in the Room by Porpentine 2012-09-04T03:05:00

the original and most covers of it aren't really worth listening to, in my opinion. the only other version i remotely enjoy is Mina's

The Sky in the Room by Porpentine 2012-09-06T23:55:00

Thanks. This isn't porn though--it's a story that has sex in it, for the same reason many good books and films do--sex is a huge part of what makes up people's lives.

I also find it funny that people keep telling me to warn them about the explicit content when the first line in the description says "NONSTOP VIOLENCE, SEX, DRUGS, DEPRAVITY". That may be too subtle though :3

The Sky in the Room by Porpentine 2012-09-09T21:38:00

it's understandable, this is more idiosyncratically written than most of my games and draws on certain hard-to-define moods and cultural backgrounds. thank you for playing it anyways :>

Cuboid Sandbox by cominu 2012-09-05T08:53:00

SANDKINGS

very very pretty

Cuboid Sandbox by cominu 2012-09-05T08:55:00

ahhhh this is fascinating

kinetic dream by mdkess 2012-08-31T11:03:00

Lovely graphics, nice mood. I like seeing incoming red dots on the minimap, makes me feel like a cool starfighter >:3

Lolicopocalypse by quasist 2012-08-28T02:51:00

The tentacle rape struck me as tasteless, I think scary tendrils could be accomplished without touching that subject. Also the view is slower than the walking speed, I have to keep waiting for it to catch up. I like the visuals and mood though.

TRANS by NicoJaujou 2012-08-26T15:08:00

I like the subject matter. It can be difficult to trigger certain words--I cannot trigger the final word "transhuman"

They Are Coming! by Gryxitl 2012-09-03T23:49:00

First off, love the levels. The movement is too slow for something that is primarily explorative (I recognize that there are enemies but they don't seem to do anything and this game is super pretty so the net experience is explorative). The music is also too harsh sometimes in the wrong way (I listen to a lot of dissonant, noisy music so I'm not biased in that area). Pleasepleaseplease make a version with faster movement speed, I'd love to fly around your world :>

Adlus: Mouse Of Truth by magicdweedoo 2012-08-27T12:07:00

yay i like this!! having played your previous games i'm happy that the walking and text speed is faster, so much easier to enjoy your art/story that way

Adlus: Mouse Of Truth by magicdweedoo 2012-08-27T12:08:00

i hope one day you make a sim/tycoon game of some sort

The Darwinci Code - Adaption FTW! by wlad 2012-08-29T09:24:00

The visual design is both aesthetic and thoughtful--I like the way you conveyed information. Great background music too, love the growls, drums, and squeaky sound.

Paprika Blue by ekunminnowbash 2012-08-28T06:19:00

Love the visuals--is there only the initial area? I keep falling into the void if I stray far.

I discovered that spamming W against a surface does wall-jumping and that the moving stones can launch you up higher if you jump at their apex.

evoxy by Gungnir 2012-09-04T11:30:00

i agree, this is pretty. just watching meteorites fall from the sky is nice.

The Joining by Eniko 2012-08-28T02:25:00

Encountering other players or robots is difficult, I spent a lot of time wandering around. The audio is a bit disorienting since usually in an online game one interprets sounds of fighting as signalling nearby players--I think it's just ambient war sound though? I like the idea of fighting together with other players though, coop is one of my favorite modes.

Robo Rancher by metadept 2012-08-27T02:59:00

I like the interface. Maybe I was expecting more out of the testing chamber (greater fluidity of speed, carnage, something like that?), but this has a cool tactile feel in the dragging of things around to little boxes.

Parental Guidance by Maple 2012-08-31T13:02:00

THIS IS SO FUCKING CREEPY

amazing job

Neural Nodes by Kmad 2012-08-27T01:44:00

Love the art and I love boardgames, it would be super cool to see a game with all the features that didn't make it in

Triple Threat by rylgh 2012-09-01T10:14:00

wow, nice job, this is very, how should i say, reflexively cerebral? there's a lot going on but at the same time it isn't overwhelmingly overwhelming, that is to say, it is bearably overwhelming because there's a gradient of control and success. love it.

RE-evolution: The Legend of Hopper by andreyin 2012-08-29T09:57:00

MACHINE GUN SPEARS

Growing Tree by Devaki 2012-08-27T10:08:00

Interesting! Going through a tangled, organic cluster of things is cool. My criticism is that the camera angle made it difficult to make meaningful movement decisions and the sound was rather repetitive. Congratulations on your first game though!

Goin' Bananas - A Sci-Fi Melodrama by Topher Florence 2012-08-29T19:36:00

pretty interesting, i liked this. i wondered sometimes if it was meant to be offensive towards trans people but you seem to have considered that angle already and not be looking at it from that perspective? anyways, yay, fellow Twine contestant!

Improv by benderbinary 2012-08-30T00:16:00

love the visuals, especially the flowers. movement is way too hard but i appreciate that you made this game about a plucky hairy little stick...

42 Stories by Priapus 2012-08-28T00:29:00

this looks very intriguing but loading takes an extremely long time and many assets don't seem to be displaying properly in the web version? i'll try the windows download

Beetlefield : The Forecast by Benjamin 2012-08-29T21:52:00

ahhhh i love gladiator style games, nice job on...everything!

Beetlefield : The Forecast by Benjamin 2012-08-29T22:00:00

gyahhhh, i love the balancing act of learning when to change sides, this is one of the best entries

"Natural" Selection by r4m0n 2012-08-27T02:23:00

I like the idea of enemies adapting--two design tweaks would help this though:

1) faster movement is better for a game like this both (controls should feel good + hard to strategize when you can't move meaningful distances)
2) the pew-pew sound effects are a bit grating, something easier for long-term listening would be better

Evolution of a monster by eld 2012-08-27T01:25:00

I like the aesthetic--not sure how to get past the initial area. I found the key but getting it to interact with the lock seems beyond me.

Targeted Evolution by johnfn 2012-08-29T21:31:00

"That is the dumbest thing I've heard all day" line was funny. The falling on the ground sound is really punchy and loud, hard to deal with.

Boxy the Boxcat in Evolution Escapades by matthias_zarzecki 2012-08-27T12:32:00

cute cats, cute music! i like wandering around this cute post-apocalypse looking out for my kitty offspring

Species Hunt by Frib 2012-08-29T19:51:00

ah what a cute game! i greatly desire more freeroaming photography games and for some reason no one really makes them. looking forward to any more work you do on this! i also like the Tribes-style skiing when you press Space

Seed 1,801,360 by cambrian_era 2012-08-29T04:27:00

i like this! atmospheric and intriguing

Legacy Bird by Farfin 2012-08-29T21:03:00

like everything you make, this is beautiful

i love the words you use--"Do you love to climb?" a small touch but elegantly above the norm

Legacy Bird by Farfin 2012-08-29T21:08:00

i like the semi-puzzular Jousty feel of the combat too. AHHH this is so cute!!!

1000 Evolving Kittens by moonmagic 2012-08-29T10:41:00

WORM KITTENS ARE DESTRUCTIVE AND EAT EVERYTHING

The World Hates You by mcc 2012-08-30T00:20:00

i adore the ethos behind this. at this moment in time it's generating many blatantly impossible levels for me, but ahhh i want to see this principle applied to more games

The World Hates You by mcc 2012-09-04T00:05:00

levels are better now yay

Evo... launch-ion? by Mark Ffrench 2012-08-28T19:12:00

this is exactly how evolution went down

Aqualution by alexandervrs 2012-08-29T19:59:00

it's clear that you put a lot of effort into the graphics, i'd love to see everything up a bit closer? it feels a bit far away from the main character so i can't catch all the detail. anyways, very pretty

Praepoch by Connor 2012-08-27T23:49:00

I love the way the visuals breathe, houses and rocks and trees bobbing up and down, a splendid touch. The axe snick is gratifying. Did you make the sea crossing wind sounds with your mouth? Haha, cute! I also like how killing the initial enemies is trivial but eventually you just want to avoid the stronger ones--accepting that not everything can or should be killed makes it feel more like an ecosystem/world than a videogame level.

One of my favorite entries.

I Am A Tree. You Are Not. Ha Ha. by angrygeometry 2012-08-30T05:55:00

i like the living butt the best of all the forms, so cute and rumpy. i appreciate that you didn't use rpgmaker combat and made this about the story. very cool game.

Dragonkin EVO by bobiniki 2012-09-01T20:55:00

You gain nothing by having the player collect 35 objects very slowly, that's just drudgery. With faster movement speed it becomes about reflex and coordination. :>

Porte par le Vent by Elisée and friends 2012-08-31T13:22:00

very cool--this would be better as pure exploration, without the rings, which feel like a frustrated, outmoded feature. you've clearly made a pretty environment to explore, it would be more interesting to navigate it without arbitrary hoops to leap through. going back to enter a hoop i missed is simply boring--my instinct is to press on.

And Thus She Spake by pbdiode 2012-08-29T21:21:00

i like the scripture as game guide, i like the presentation, i love the extreme balancing act of the gameplay.

Place of Origin by evilseanbot 2012-08-30T07:08:00

i love the melancholy search for a distant song, very sehnsucht...so very romantic. the volume shifts between worlds taking me ever closer to this sound...

Hortus by amodo 2012-08-29T20:34:00

interesting start, i of course maxed all replication and all mutation. am i correct though that nothing happens afterwards, or have i simply picked the wrong planets? anyways, the music is great...so spacey and evocative

500 years by imef 2012-09-03T23:56:00

nice start, it's like playing around with ant colonies. i want more games like this!

LD25 — You are the Villain

Goblin Fortress by AtkinsSJ 2012-12-21T11:03:00

i love the freeform nature of this, designing cities in the goblin plains, watching it slowly grow

i wanna play a version of this with more stuff

Tiny Sorceress by L 2012-12-17T10:56:00

This is a great companion piece to Terra Tam

i always look for your game first when Ludum Dare is done

Crime in the City by Volute 2012-12-18T11:12:00

I really like the boardgamey/card gamey aspect of this. I'm unsure how to beat encounters though--even boosting my strength or negating encounters with abilities doesn't seem to work.

I reallllly like this level of abstraction and I love how each location is so thematic. My favorite abilities are the ones that tie into what the location is about, like deciding to migrate all my priests to the throneroom and abandon their post--a modest way of building my own narrative.
