LD26 — Minimalism

DropPix by AtkinsSJ 2013-04-30T01:58:00

When I looked at the rules I thought "oh this will be neat!" But the challenge just wasn't there. The 3 level (where you write an S) contained the game play elements that would have made this better,

Boxy by matter123 2013-04-30T00:12:00

This was a good game! It had a quick twitchy kind of addictive game-play, similar in many ways to "Three Body Problem". I played until level 4, but which time I had already activated Potato Mode.

I got quite good at hovering in place, but one must also learn to flee. While I am not convinced that a context for this was necessary, the choice of "spy avoiding capture" is pretty fitting. I hover until my cover is blown, and then I have to speed away without... touching the walls!

GridANT by Saand1338 2013-05-11T16:01:00

This reminded me of my second in game day of minecraft. The first day I was like "lovely, I will explore this vast world." That night I was surprised to find zombies. The next day was a frantic race against time.

I loved that the ant gradually speeds up, so that game-play mimics my own attitude as I become more and more pressed for time. I made a small gravity defying, minimalist statue hoping to alert my captor of my vastly superior intellect.

Alas...

Minimalism Tower Defence by Dew 2013-04-30T03:08:00

Very cool! It pushes the non-verbal aspect pretty hard and I like that. A comment I would make is: make learning a rewarding activity all by itself. What I mean is, when I click on the right button or make the right decision, reward me with satisfying light and colour or feedback. That, I feel, would be enough.

Escape Shaft by Zathalos 2013-05-16T05:56:00

Good fun game. Maybe not miminalist? That's OK though! I beat the game for sure, and found it reasonably challenging. Music and visuals were cool, and the blast and charge up were nice.

Crystal Of Shadows by Serilyn 2013-05-07T07:08:00

Very nice concept. You basically reversed the tower defence game. I really enjoyed slowly relearning to play. I wonder what other genres could benefit from such a reversal?

I lost my first game, but the second game I just started by removing all my non-yellow mushrooms. I won shortly there-after without loosing a single crystal. Yellow is OP! :p

Just Shapes by Zanzlanz 2013-04-30T01:41:00

Intense! The music is the thing that really does it, so 5/5 for that. In later levels you could have more polygons that are potentially difficult to tell apart since, despite the intense presentation, one could solve this game by just grabbing a shape and waiting.

They wouldn't get the high score though!

Rokhopr by David Durham 2013-04-30T00:30:00

Very unique control scheme. I love when games ask me to learn a completely new activity. Rapidly tapping or clicking anything can be a bit of a pain though :)

I also like the simple but evocative visuals that didn't demand that I make a particular choice of interpretations. Many games I've played so far have similarly abstract visuals, but on the title screen they demand that I choose a particular interpretation.

At first I thought I was a frog with one eye, but later I decided I was a space creature.

Sorry for the double submit!

Planes by phaze0 2013-04-30T06:23:00

Wonderful! Really captures the feel of those old games. The sound, the embedded graphics. Perfect! Not particularly challenging, but certainly a winner.

Friendship in a Post-Apocalyptic World by marnaouf 2013-04-30T01:52:00

This was OK. The music got to me after a while. I like the premise though.

The Creation by netgrind 2013-04-30T00:37:00

You nailed it. This is a person who has a clear understanding of subtlety and design. I hope everyone plays this!

Mime Over Matter by AlexFili 2013-05-11T16:29:00

Amazing that a game which, at its core, is a 48 hour game, could have become so popular.

[[[[ by domrein 2013-05-16T05:27:00

Neat thing you were doing there. Unfortunately there was something perhaps computationally intense going on, and gameplay slowed to a crawl. Maybe that's just me?

DeaN by Sakuyan 2013-04-30T04:58:00

This is a really lovely entry. I was sad that the story mode just suddenly turned into an endless walk... was that intended? Game mode was innovative in the sense that the danger was not you being killed by an obstacle, but rather that you want to avoiding killing them.

I killed a little girl with a balloon... It was an accident!

ASCII 219 by Richard Rice 2013-04-30T03:59:00

This was fun at first, but perhaps a little long. The fuzzy background was a little hard to stomach, though I realize it was chosen to add mood. The game reminds me of some Sega Genesis exploration game I played when I was a kid, or of Super Metroid (wall jumping!).

Tricky and fun, though! Good job!

Pix by Holofire 2013-04-30T02:40:00

This was a fun puzzler! The beeping became a little annoying. I got to about level 18, at which point I thought things were starting to get challenging. I liked the addition of orange blocks that server as, um... overpasses? Are there more blocks later?

Thanks for releasing a Linux port! Do you have twitter? I'd like to call you out for this lovely game.

Block Hat by yetanother 2013-05-16T05:43:00

Funny little puzzler! Took a moment to figure out just how to play.

Distradiction by shines 2013-04-30T05:25:00

Distraction is an elegant and simple distraction. It felt like the tutorial for a game.

Black on Black by LUD4K 2013-05-11T16:44:00

I also had trouble understanding the mechanics. High score of 153 but no leader-board so no context for that number... I am all for games that don't explain themselves, especially puzzlers like this one, but you surely need to give a little more feedback to encourage right action.

Jump by Test User 2013-04-30T03:40:00

76 Fool! Boom!

More content would have been good, but interestingly I found the invitation to post scores quite encouraging. I played many times to get my high score.

Join by Perry 2013-04-30T05:20:00

Wow! That got really hard really fast. It takes good advantage of the human brain for sure: when I cross the screen and feel like "right!" and it should be left.

The music and visuals are spot on, and the encouraging music you get when you die is a very nice touch. I felt like the game was cheering me on!

Pyramid by PaulSB 2013-05-11T17:14:00

This was a spectacular game. Man, my Barbaric Axe of Horror slew so many foes. I'm not a person who tends to play rogue-likes, so I actually had a learning curve to get over. My first play I thought I just had to avoid enemies. I got to about level 13. Once I realized I could sometimes kill them, I got further. When finally I started to get weapon upgrades, then I took off. I think I got to like, level 40? I imagine there are 99 levels (or maybe some power of 2?).

Anyway: great mood, the little "plop" sound really made it for me. I played this again and again. I am curious about the AI, also. The orange guys seemed really shy, despite their power.

Finally I died in an ambush...

Untitled Part IIIa by hnjslater 2013-05-11T05:25:00

This game was great! It made me laugh out loud quite literally. First, I didn't know how to play. Then I realized it was a tower defence game. Then you moved my damn base! Then just when I thought I had you, suddenly I had two bases? And then four!!!

┻━┻ ︵ヽ(`Д´)ノ︵ ┻━┻

Honestly though, really great game. Hidden genre, hidden controls, minimal visuals, brutally difficult.

20 Seconds by KayZ 2013-04-30T03:23:00

This is great! I got 360 points. Waiting is fine, people are wimps :)

I would like you to set up google analytics if you haven't already: I'd like to know how long people spend on the game. Also, world-wide leader board please.

Something else that's neat about this game is that later, you could implement more mini-games and throw them in without telling anyone. Only the most patient players would be able to discover the truth.

Did you ever play VESPER5?

BiT by SanctuaryInteractive 2013-04-29T20:16:00

I cannot run this entry because there does not appear to be a link to the game.

Squared by Shorefire 2013-05-16T05:19:00

Nice. Brutally hard, but I got used to it pretty quick. High score was 11. I liked the mysterious unlabelled power ups. Good music for sure.

One By One by amijlee 2013-04-30T05:57:00

High score: 9 points! This is a challenging and cool puzzle game that doesn't patronize the player with instruction. I really like that the most exposition we encounter is the title, which moves in a way the evokes the game's core mechanic. It took me a while to solve the first puzzle where the black piece had moved: nice!

Very full game-play for such a minimalist game!

MiniHarvest by johnnei 2013-05-11T05:12:00

I couldn't figure out how to play... and the dude walks too slow. Its too bad my patience wore out because I like sims.

Home by Jonapulse 2013-04-30T03:34:00

Very challenging game: I managed to win after many many tries. The gravity effect is neat, but this game doesn't succeed in making it feel like gravity (Osmos does this, for example). I think it would be better if you were in orbit around the sun, having to adjust that orbit and use gravity wells to throw yourself around.

Good job for 48 hours though!

Bladeless by kidevil 2013-05-05T23:53:00

Pretty cool, but I think I prefer Karateka.

True treasure of Kartoffelschloss by mortus 2013-05-11T06:23:00

This was a very fun, very clever, and very complete entry. This game presented me with a slow release of awesome, culminating in a great ending. As I discarded my weapons I thought, "oh yeah this is the 'minimalism' I guess." Only when I gained psychic powers did I begin to suspect what the true treasure might be.

Games like this -- that ask me to play a genre I'm familiar with in reverse -- are truly awesome. Reminded me of Death Death Evolution from a previous Ludum Dare.

Lifebloom by Hologuardian 2013-05-16T05:13:00

Had to wait a long time for other things to show up.

BatWorld by Farjuan 2013-05-16T05:36:00

Nice concept. I was not able to play this game very well, but I think I will still rate it highly.

MiniCity by ToastyAbraham 2013-04-30T02:17:00

I agree with the comments above that say there is not enough feedback. The idea of painting the world with brighter colours is good, but not quite enough.

Dwalk by Joritan Cety 2013-04-30T06:26:00

I got trapped in the instruction screen and couldn't play. I guess I'll clear my cache?

A cube story by oskardevelopment 2013-05-11T16:23:00

Maybe there is a problem with this game on linux? When I press buttons like "gravity" or "left" the effect in the game occurs after an intolerable lag, and then only little by little. Is this normal?

50Coins by ironman 2013-04-29T21:14:00

I downloaded the linux file, but am unsure what application to use to run it. I gave it permission to be executed and ran it from the command-line. The output was: There is no data folder.

dotmove by garlicbread 2013-05-06T00:10:00

Beautiful! That was crafted with care, challenging, and very pretty. The piano sounds I made while I slid around the board were very delicate and great! I beat the game, for sure. Wow, this turns out to be one of my favourite games of the Dare.

dotmove by garlicbread 2013-05-06T00:12:00

Ha ha! little_polygon said it best: "recommended for rubic's cube fans". I just came out of a group theory course and was thinking about that while I played.

Voider by Back to Browse Entries 2013-05-11T05:18:00

That was hilarious. I couldn't get more than a few points. I guess I need to work on my reflexes. Its amazing how a simple game like this can still have its own appeal.

Robopotato by xyrix 2013-05-07T06:26:00

I really like this concept, no doubt. However, I had a hard time motivating myself to play it.

The reason is: your example solution to puzzle "apcxptadou" is 58 lines long. Those potatoes can all be gotten in 48 lines if you hard code the journey. It is probably possible to get the journey down below 48 lines, but not much. The overhead of each state makes the trade-off a very rough one. Maybe that is just one example, but I think it is probably telling (I solved two new puzzles, but each time found the hard coded solution shorter).

Think of a time when you have used "magic numbers" or string literals in your code. Why did you do it? Probably it was an extremely particular case, like the numbers zero, one, or two; or it was a value that you really knew wasn't going to change. Mostly it is a lazy decision, but it can also be a very cost efficient decision: if the value is only used in a few places and the overhead of generalizing it would be costly, this is a good decision.

In your game, the cost of generalizing a move is immense. Adding a new state costs at least 5 lines of overhead! Since the goal, beyond getting the potatoes, is to minimize lines of code I just can't see this going the way you want it to (read: the way I would want to play the game just isn't rewarded).

If the goal of your game had been to develop a program that could solve more than one maze, then we would need to generalize rather than hard-wire our solutions. Similarly, instead of "get all the potatoes" you could have made the goal "explore as many tiles as possible." Then measure the length of the solution against the quality of the exploration it produced, and you would have yourself a fascinating little game (I imagine).

Still, what you do have is really cool and impressive enough to deserve a good score. You also succeeded in really getting people talking: that's got to be worth bonus points!

Uber Tic Tac Toe by chume 2013-04-30T06:17:00

Couldn't play the game, but I you score high for theme and humour. (and sympathy points from someone with similar problems)

MiniCrawl by Elemnir 2013-04-30T06:38:00

BASHLAND - Breakout Mario Mashup by McFunkypants 2013-04-30T00:49:00

This is the game you wished you were playing all those times you played breakout. I enjoyed gradually realizing what I was looking at, and learning to ride up through objects instead of just bouncing off them.

Interesting emergent mechanic (maybe you intended this): while 1-ups didn't seem to matter much but if you try to go through the level destroying EVERYTHIGN you quickly find that dying means the end.

Very very nice. 48 hours? You are a hero.

Mandala by arrogant.gamer 2013-04-30T02:26:00

Thanks for the comments everyone! I wish I had had more time to polish the actual world more, as it stands it is not as engaging as it could be (and too wordy in places). I started LD48 late enough that I only had 24 hours... :)

Mandala by arrogant.gamer 2013-04-30T05:33:00

Ha ha ha oh man. Just before launch I noticed I had spelled "plain" as "plane" all the way through. There are two factors: all the content was made in about 5 hours; I am a terrible speller and spell-checkers don't help with that kind of error.

If I had had time to really proof-read, that would have been great.

Mandala by arrogant.gamer 2013-05-01T16:51:00

A few entries this year presented zen gardens or rooms with sliding shoji screens. I wish I had the skills to present such a place, perhaps in tandem with text.

Ellipse Madness by shaircast 2013-05-16T05:48:00

The story was maybe a bad idea... but seriously dude this game is awesome! The screen shaking made the game transcended a normal level of cool into something amazing. The game itself is super simple, but really satisfying. I am totally happy to have stumbled across your entry.

Hipster Annihilator 9000 by deige101 2013-04-30T05:08:00

I gave this a remarkably high score, considering that it isn't like __amazing__. I think you pretty much hit the button with this as far as LD48 entries go.

It preminded me of a game about the Turing test: an online multiplayer game in which cyborg hunters interview cyborgs... and each other!

BareBones by zeelyndz 2013-04-29T20:37:00

Naked Shades by Lamia Queenz 2013-04-30T04:50:00

Oh neat! This is multi-player? I didn't realize that! I had hoped that my game was the only multi-player interactive fiction... OK well I will give this another spin and put more effort into understanding.

(if I'd known Twine could be used for multiplayer stories, maybe I wouldn't have rolled my own).

Thanks!

Unst by Milo 2013-04-30T02:08:00

Nice puzzler. Actually, this is pretty hard and I actually failed in the 3rd or 4th level. However, there is no "quite" or "reset" button built in (or none evident).

I like games that teach game-play simply and gradually, and this is definitely that.

Combattant by Kyatric 2013-04-29T21:19:00

I played once, but couldn't hadoken. I beat my enemy in the same way I would have in Street Fighter though: duck and kick at the same time.

I'm impressed that you made a fighting game like this in 48 hours!

Forest for the Tree by iximeow 2013-04-29T20:55:00

Very nice! I had trouble figuring out exactly how to play: but I like having to figure out how to play a game. At some point I scrolled a ways away to check if there was a cluster nearby, and realized that without a "home" button one could become impossibly lost!

Once I realized that there is indeed an element of danger, I was able to continue playing for quite some time before getting board. All in all, good job!

I didn't like the metaphor at the beginning though. Such a lovely abstract game, why include "people" why not just call them nodes?

Doe by BlackDogg 2013-05-11T06:55:00

Wow, what a thrill! The ending was too much (in a good way). I enjoy the combination of block pushing and dodging guards. The best part was definitely the mood, music, and mystery. I would have liked the "wall pushing" to play a larger role in the later stages (maybe it did and I just didn't push enough walls?).

The fact that the game restarts rather than ending completely is... unsettling. Should I go back and play it through again?

Doe by BlackDogg 2013-05-21T01:51:00

Do you have a website or twitter account? I'd like to direct traffic to you, because I think your game is great.

No instructions on how to play this game?

Dungeoneer by protensity 2013-04-30T04:18:00

This is my favourite entry so far (at this moment I have reviewed about 25 games). It was very clever to combine a text adventure with something else, and the strange, moody block collecting mini-game that decides your fate is perfect.

I think you could take this farther, and make a text adventure that linked to a whole ton of neat puzzles, moody scenes or activities, and information.

Thanks for this!

Sorry, my bad! I got it to work in the browser (had to update JRE heh).

This is hilarious. I love that there is actually no pretty cave-lady at the end ^o^// also, Grog's voice is great. Did you do the voice acting? I thought of doing an a cappella cover of the zelda theme for my game... but didn't.

Grog's jumping is what makes this game hard. I really like the smoke effects too. Overall, a very cute and fun game. It would be a prime candidate for having a leader-board!

YOGO PATH by cesisco 2013-12-16T21:34:00

Veeeeery nice. Love the music and sound-effects. In particular, the elastic snapping noise of the mega-jump is cool. The idea is quite unique, and I especially like how evocative it is: one of the characters is slower, but it is left up to my imagination to fill in that blank.

It. Gets. Hard!

"a sword game" by droqen 2013-12-18T20:16:00

The biggest sword was clearly the winner for me (because it was the last sword I tried, so it was the one I was holding when I finally figured out how to fight with swords).

I really like games in which you have to learn something new in order to participate. At first, everything in a sword game was frustrating! My blade was falling al lover the place, I was never facing the right direction, and I thought the giant dudes were just invincible (actually, I thought the little ones were too). Once I learned the secret language of your game, and developed a fighting style that seemed to work, suddenly it was over all too soon!

I killed all the little dudes in the last room, by the way.

Also, I like to imagine that this game is set in the same world as that other game (the one with instructions). The other dude was a mysterious tune-wizard, and learning to control that little dude was fun too.

Have you played Heavy Sword? Puzzle(action adventure)script.

Exclamation Life by Punga 2013-12-16T21:03:00

The story is definitely better than bioshock, but that's not saying much. I think this is a very interesting genre, and you did well to explore it for ludum dare. I would say: go deeper. Control the player psychologically, rather than just by limiting their options.

Check out "in the stream". http://in-the-stream.com/

Exclamation Life by Punga 2013-12-16T21:06:00

Also, good writing can replace vulgarity perfectly. I was kind of 50/50 on saying this (as is evidenced by me posting two comments), since you probably will just think I'm an upset old man, or something. Seriously, though, the most shocking and upsetting things I've ever heard were not "retard" or "nigger": if you want to make a really evocative game that enrages the player, do it subtly. You know what I mean? The truth, man, the truth can be way more shocking and enraging than meaningless, out of context, curse-words.

High marks for you!

Skycrafters by Inso 2013-12-21T22:59:00

I scored 70 as well. Oxygen runs out pretty quick. Also, a UI detail: I clicked to start, and then immediately fell off the bottom of the screen. This happened twice before I got to actually play.

Fun game, nice graphics!

Jam Panic! by xhunterko 2013-12-18T20:22:00

Thanks: this story mirrors my first Jam. "I'm a web-developer, what do I know about game development. I can't make a _game_. Hmm, well there is that "Twine" thing... I could do that!"

With regards to the ironic comment about women making games: maybe next time put it in context. "Growing up in north-America, playing video games in a basement with dudes, you naturally assume her tutorial won't cut it." Might have gotten your point across more clearly.

One shot by Jod 2013-12-16T13:28:00

That was very cool! I took the cigarettes, naturally, thinking that I could use them to barter for information on the surface, maybe get myself in as a chef's assistant or something. Unfortunately, the choices often just came back to distracting the guards and shooting them. Still, a very cool experience! I got the bad ending...

OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.12.6) (6b27-1.12.6-1ubuntu2.1)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.0-b12, mixed mode)

Inquisition by drakekin 2013-12-16T13:47:00

This was a nice, mostly idle quest! I like idle games, like "progress quest", "linear RPG", and more recently "Megami Quest".

You did a great job with the graphics and lighting effects. I would have liked to see a travelling dot, though. The font was challenging to read! A status bar to keep track of how many locals are helping me would have been great.

In the end, I rescued my daughter and the game said "great, now get to the port!" Since I had forgotten which dot was the port, and since none of them seemed to be clearly marked "port", I gave up at that point.

0RBITALIS by AlanZucconi 2013-12-16T15:22:00

Beautiful! This is a very fun simulation. I think, though, that it doesn't do the theme great justice: any arcade game is a "one-shot" deal by default.

Still, graphics gameplay and fun: and its web based!

Ex Nihilo by Walnoot 2013-12-20T22:43:00

I get the road crash too. Still, looks like you have the foundation for a neat RTS. I'd rather make peace with my homeland, though: my friends and family probably live there.

Deci-minute Gamer Dinner! by Aske 2013-12-16T14:12:00

I like the hotline-Miami style top down look. The wall collisions were pretty huge (my game has the same problem), and the doors were very narrow. Result: hilarious.

The page load time was pretty long...

Christmas Puzzle Nightmare by uRLgR3y 2013-12-16T13:57:00

Awesome! Racking my brain searching for the "linchpin" in each level was totally fun. Nice puzzle music, too. Very good use of the theme, too.

Static Room by f7f5 2013-12-16T14:07:00

Oh man, this was awesome! I think you managed to make a very cool thing here. Then again, I am notoriously obsessed with symmetry, groups, and rotations. The procedurally generated music was also very cool, and is definitely something I will put in my tool box for later.

Theme use could have been better! You could have had multiple control rooms that were non-static, and then every room could have had exactly one door. Well, that's just my opinion.

Anyway: very fun!

You only get one bullet by JackBid 2013-12-16T14:17:00

Cool puzzler! It is extra challenging because of the bug where you can't really restart after you fail ^o^//.

Series of tubes by 2kah 2013-12-16T14:48:00

Something strange, a bug perhaps? I played in firefox, and would frequently die for no reason. I never "collided" with any zeros, but the game seemed to think I did.

OneShot by minibutmany 2013-12-16T14:34:00

This is a great game. Seriously: great. My reasons for thinking this are many. There are tons of "one shot" submissions for this compo, but yours is unique (so far) in that it doesn't require accuracy or method, so much as patience. Others will tell you: patience is my favourite controller.

The glitch sound-track helps, too, as does the aesthetically pleasing "orbits". I mean, humans just love watching things turn: we are hard wired to find rotational symmetry and gears-like motion around a point attractive. When it all lines up for one moment, and you get the shot! BOOM!

The game mocks you when you lose, and because there is no save, this actually starts to get to me. Emotions, man, they are an excellent control.

Finally: the fact that you have to start from the beginning each time (I mean, the fact that this is an "arcade style" game) is perfect. I wish so hard that there was a leader-board for me to climb.

YOLO, Obviously by carlsommer 2013-12-16T14:45:00

I do not agree with the views expressed in this game.

Heart by arrogant.gamer 2013-12-16T14:23:00

I apologize to all the folks who don't have twitter... but listen: not everyone gets to be a hero.

Heart by arrogant.gamer 2013-12-16T14:49:00

Ha ha! Thanks, you are the first! I will give you MY HEART! (but you need three to get the sword...)

Heart by arrogant.gamer 2013-12-16T15:08:00

Oh! What browser and OS?

Heart by arrogant.gamer 2013-12-16T15:49:00

@Cbeed: I agree that the in-game instructions could use work. This game is opaque, but with very little reward for those who appreciate/figure it out. I plan on extending it post-jam to make it more worth the effort. Thanks for playing!

Also, yeah: perma-death! So be careful with your hearts.

Heart by arrogant.gamer 2013-12-16T21:41:00

Hey, it's Ted Brown of Oreganik! We talked about Chess Heroes at SIX. Your words, they fill me with joy! I'm definitely going to spend some hours this/next month trying to add a compelling zelda-like to my high-concept zelda-like. ^o^//

In particular, I want the player to have to keep getting more and more hearts to progress... maybe as many as 20!

Heart by arrogant.gamer 2013-12-18T09:51:00

Ha ha, don't give your heart to yourself! Careful with that thing, you only get one!

Heart by arrogant.gamer 2013-12-20T23:00:00

@anttiviljami, as mentioned above, the game asks for read-only permission which is exactly the same as me reading your twitter account off your LD profile (which I just did).

UniSwarm by ChaseC 2013-12-16T15:33:00

It took me three or four plays to really understand how this works, but it was engaging enough that I enjoyed exploring.

I can pull units out of the red dot, but I shouldn't pull them all out. If I send units to nearby dots, my rate of supply increases. I want to create a big swarm, and eliminate the blue player.

Elegant! I love abstract RTS games, though they often boil down to exactly this kind of gameplay. I don't think this is the only way to abstract an RTS, though: I wonder what else could be made!

Fill-In Fantasy by frogcheese 2013-12-20T22:05:00

Ha ha ha! Awesome! I played two levels, doing mainly magic the first time and _only_ running away the second. Running away didn't seem to make me better at anything, though. Is there a way to win by evading all encounters (I guess that's a victory in and of itself?).

Anyway: superb.

YOLO Simulator 2014 by EncryptedCow 2013-12-20T21:24:00

This game is jam-packed with bias! I lived to a ripe old age of 105 by alternating between "good YOLO" and "work". The question is: who decides what YOLO is good, and what YOLO is bad? For example, I think a lot of positive societal good came from some of the YOLO in the 1960, which your game would probably have considered "bad YOLO" (just based on the wealth differential). Game would be more mechanically interesting if it took a more neutral stance, and offered more shades of grey.

How does one run this game? What platform? Java?

Chambers by person124 2013-12-16T20:47:00

Wow. Wow. I got 3/8 but I have no idea why, or what. This game is compelling and mysterious despite seeming so simple.

Also: thanks for including a Java 6 build. How should I know what Java version I'm running? I mean, Java? Common!

Zombie Kung Fu by 1WTC 2013-12-16T21:15:00

Can you upload a Java 1.6 build?

Take one thing with you. by background_nose 2013-12-21T21:59:00

Sweet game! I was only able to get a meager 1,200 points with a potion, but I really like the concept. I think if there was a little more there to encourage survival, I would be more inclined to play longer.

Robogenesis by JavadocMD 2013-12-16T21:21:00

Oooooh very nice. Adding speed to the memory game is neat, but there is something missing. At a certain point it just turned into a frantic click-a-thon because I knew that if I revealed a tread-set I had desperate little time to find another. This kind of detracts from the "memory" aspect.

Loved the theme, and I'll have you know that at the end when the game prompted me with "click to send your creation to war", I closed the window and ended the game. My and my robot creation are off on some crazy adventure right now!

Seed The Universe by Truncator 2013-12-20T22:46:00

I also couldn't run the jar. Got the following:

Failed to load Main-Class manifest attribute from ld28.jar

Earth by george_prosser 2013-12-20T22:09:00

Nice. I found the controls very difficult, but the gravity effects and the quote at the end were very satisfying. Also, a very pretty game. Where did all those rocks come from!?

Valia V: A New Beginning by mrb4rbz 2013-12-18T19:19:00

That was not the game I was expecting! Nice work on your first jam. I liked the music, and having to push page_up and insert in a typing game was cool (also the math).

Sculptors & Stones: Throw the Hammer by joeyhen 2013-12-18T19:27:00

Who's the Worst Person in the World? by whiteknife 2013-12-18T22:48:00

I chose to kill the head of Murder Industries: I could resist the symmetry there. A nice closed loop. I was disappointed by the fact that my choice seemed to be a "wrong answer", but then maybe they all are.

This was nice! A little too American, maybe? I think this subject matter deserves to be collaborative: maybe try a remake with your pen-pal on the other side of the world?

Monochrome by ApoorvaJ 2013-12-21T22:55:00

Unity, eh? From the sound of it, this is a pretty epically cool game that I won't get to play because there isn't a linux build. //(T.T)\\

Gem breaker 28 by rezil 2013-12-21T22:49:00

Not bad! Sad that it involved so much clicking, though. I enjoyed finding blocks that were acting as linch-pins, taking them out, and then watching everything fall into place. I agree with comments above that the game would be better if we could hold down click to break (like in some other block breaking games I've played...), or if there was a key-binding.

Choose Wisely by zconnelly13 2013-12-18T22:28:00

I'm going to throw in with the rest here and say: this is a solid game. The controls of the wall jump were cool: reminiscent of super metroid. I chose un kitteh (d'uh).

Same, nothing in either browser. Ubuntu.

One Among Many by phaed 2013-12-21T21:48:00

Very cool! I'm particularly fond of this kind of game, and I made one not too long ago. You throw into question the player's ability to pour themselves into their avatar. This is a very interesting topic. I beat the game!

Jump Chip by arkeus 2013-12-16T15:42:00

Challenging a beautiful puzzler! Would probably be really neat to play with two players. This reminds me a lot of "narcissus", which is a runner in a similar vein.

The fact that you pulled off such graphics in 48 hours is really awesome! I can't wait for my work-flow to get that smooth.

You only get 1-1 by headchant 2013-12-21T22:28:00

I will have to say that of the ~40 LD games I've rated so far, this one is going to get the highest rating. Such a great mariotroid-vania! I loved unlocking the helmet and double jump. I expected more back-tracking, but enjoyed all the spikes anyway. 48 coins 4 rubies.

Shopping Madness by Mago 2013-12-20T22:13:00

Oh man! This should come with a trigger warning! Such anxiety. So race against time. wow. Fortunately, I won in the end.

Moon's quest by JaJ 2013-12-20T23:18:00

Wow. Simply amazing! Graphics are really great, sound is right on, and you're right: this game manages to be interesting even in its simplicity. I'm really happy that the Game Boy aesthetic is back in fashion.

Fountain by Terry 2013-12-18T19:41:00

A sophisticated game, full of possibilities. Of which I got 3 ^o^// Nice how succinctly you were able to express the concept, and you nailed the theme without needing to name your game "You Only Get One Fountain" or something.

The fountain itself kind of looks like Marvin the Martian. Is that just me?

This world is broken by toaster 2013-12-20T21:33:00

A wall-jumper! Wall jumping has a special place in my heart. I enjoyed the visuals, but not the sound of the jump. I think its a really neat concept to have the main character unable to just jump.

Second by drschizzo 2013-12-20T23:27:00

I got 12 points! What... was I doing? I just hid in a corner and clicked continuously. Still, pretty nice looking game with a neat/weird "OK NOW YOU ARE PLAYING" vibe.

LD29 — Beneath the Surface

Generic Adventure Game by Jezzamon 2014-05-01T02:38:00

Oh wow! This is the first 5/5 I'll be giving for theme, but in addition it is a totally rad game. really great concept. I love the idea of being able to switch back and forth between the two worlds, and you made the dream world dreamy in all the right ways.

Nice job with the princess, I truly was not expecting that. I couldn't figure out how to beat the game, sadly, and I think a bunch of people have felt that way. I would say, maybe, just a little more evidence?

Generic Adventure Game by Jezzamon 2014-05-03T01:48:00

Finish Him! by dmcfarline 2014-05-07T21:03:00

Wow! So excellent! Totally not what I was expecting. You rock.

I would totally have attempted a perfect fall, if I had been able to skip the dialogue at the beginning. For some reason, the secret sub theme of LD29 has been "unskippable dialogue".

Rewire by drilltail 2014-05-01T01:30:00

That was completely rad! Definitely one of my "Game of the Jam" picks. I loved the last boss fight, for sure. The first time I had to give up my ability to walk was also a super cool moment. I'd like to see this polished up (in terms of graphics and controls), and given maybe a plot and some more levels.

Good job!

Great mood, and lots of really fun and funny clues. I wasn't able to solve anything, though: in the first two rooms I got two under-cover cops. I wasn't feeling great about my chances, so I gave up before the third room.

Also, great use of the theme! Really unexpected.

Super Robot Miner by neekobus 2014-05-07T20:29:00

Neat idea to make a classic abstract game less abstract.

I didn't get any audio in Firefox. I would have been happier if the clicking had an effect immediately, instead of having to hold down the button while the robot drills. Falling through the hold in the floor didn't make much sense to me. I'm not sure what triggered it.

Behind Mirror by SaintHeiser 2014-04-30T06:50:00

Hitting it out of the park, as usual! That was pretty hard but I totally beat it. If you give this game a try, definitely play until you get to the purple area. Such a great level design, too!

Beneath the Surface by clearlyspam23 2014-05-07T20:07:00

Good job!

I think it would have been cool to have a few more distinct level layouts. That's probably the least work you could spend to make the most difference in fun. Also, maybe lower the roof and raise the floor a little, to give it more of a claustrophobic feel.

The rate of fire of the gun was also kind of slow for my taste, and it meant that I had to click a lot to get anything done.

Colony 31 by Crazi456 2014-04-30T17:06:00

Would be cool to have a linux build, since we can't have pretty things (like web players).

Go! Go! Purgatory! by Captain_Genial 2014-05-07T21:23:00

I especially liked the small round police officers!

Seismic Charge by J.Barrows 2014-05-01T00:57:00

The Creature Beneath by Otrora Games 2014-05-01T02:09:00

Very pretty adventure, with a fun look and feel! I think you should play up the puzzling and down-play the combat.

Dying and being sent back to the beginning doesn't match the pace of the rest of the game. Because the player moves slowly under the water, solving the first puzzle takes a while. Having to do it again and again is irksome.

After reading Raiyumi's instructions above, I was able to get a satisfying score. Pretty cool idea! It feels like frantically rushing around the controls of some great machine, trying to prevent a meltdown.

I would suggest making the lines a little easier to see (especially colourblind folks will have a problem). Also, if there was some ability to "recover" life, then the player would really have to balance gaining life and preventing damage.

DeepUnder by SuperMsp10 2014-05-01T01:16:00

The Captain's Holiday by qualia 2014-05-01T01:41:00

It was a super cool game, but I felt a little torn. The look and feel were telling me to go one way, but the story itself was heavily geared to go the other. Does that make sense? The art and music were telling me, "relax, this is a game about chilling on an alien planet and being jive." Trying to do that, though, lead to the end pretty quickly.

I think the branching factor could be a little higher too (I mean, I understand jams are short and all). I just sometimes felt like, every branch lead to death or the next choice.

Don't get me wrong! I'm only going into the nitty gritty of my experience because I really enjoyed the game. Good marks in most categories!

This is really worth checking out! It was a little hard to catch the RPS symbols though: it felt like playing a rhythm game without the falling symbols to prompt me. The game felt amazing, though, so it was still fun to study my opponent carefully.
