LD21 — Escape

Mate Escape (LD) by alexandervrs 2011-09-16T16:56:00

@ChevyRay & @pekuja
Supposedly, there would also be a bride chasing you, each hit from enemies would make you lose speed and eventually getting caught in the raging bride's hug xD. Due to time though I could not add this nor an intro to properly introduce the characters and the plot.

@ChevyRay
Yeah the food ovelapping bug happened to me as well and could be easily fixed. I left it in due to lack of time.

@AndyBrown, @offwhitefox & @marudziik
Sadly as well I didn't have enough time to playtest the game properly. After playing around enough times and having friends to play it I had complaints about the ridiculous speed, which I agree, speed should increase but not too much that is impossible to dodge enemies and give the player proper time to react.

@pekuja
No worries, that's why comments are for and I agree with everything you've said.

Thanks for the comments guys. All are much appreciated. :D

LD23 — Tiny World

Asylum by Orni 2012-05-13T19:14:00

I believe you could get away by adding simple sound effects and ambience. :)

I treated this as an interactive movie than a game though, gameplay was pretty plain and the monster AI wasn't challenging. You could use his phobias as obstacles and give some kind of backstory or foreshadowing.

Concept was nice and you played around with the theme nicely too.

Tiny Shards by Gabriel 2012-05-13T22:10:00

The graphics & music were great. The platformer gameplay worked very smooth as well.
In addition to enemies, you could add hazards like spikes, timed traps etc. to make gameplay more interesting. Also sometimes I was able to "cheat" by leaving the enemy out of the viewport and shooting at him while he or his projectiles didn't follow me.
Some enemy placement felt kinda "cheap" though, especially for the Skull enemies which usually were placed after a jump, not giving you enough time to react.
Finally the game could either benefit from checkpoints or health items/powerups. The later levels are pretty long and filled with enemies & projectiles which drain your health fast.
It is already an enjoyable game though.

No One Said It Wasn't Aliens by deangiberson 2012-05-13T21:00:00

I liked the animation, I thought I could do some damage to the houses, could make it more interesting if you add that.

Tinysasters by Volute 2012-05-13T21:24:00

This is a nice and detailed puzzle game. :)

Dusty by DWallin 2012-05-13T19:42:00

I expected more than 2 levels, too short!
And creepy art... xD

Where Are You Teddy? by keebus 2012-05-13T16:35:00

I liked the graphics and the music sets the mood.
Although I stopped at the 3rd tutorial level as it didn't seem I could bounce back correctly after taking the growing potion. The tutorial messages were a bit confusing as well -for example at the 2nd level, it says that you don't need to jump but you actually do need to jump early in that level.

Predicament by orangepascal 2012-05-13T23:34:00

Nice game, plays well and fits with the theme nicely too!

Jack by PaulSB 2012-05-13T20:41:00

I kept trying to find a shoot button when I was in the plane and flew over him to an area I wasn't supposed to be.
I can't hide that I laughed at how the poor giant was defeated. xD

and although I appreciated the checkpoints, this game could benefit from health/lives.

Nook by PoV 2012-05-13T22:58:00

Pretty short, I kept wanting for more levels!
I really love the art and level design. It seems the game could use some enemies, traps & powerups to make it more challenging. :)

Pastor Mundi by Geti 2012-05-13T20:12:00

Aww this looks interesting. Sounds like a good concept. :)

These are your Friends by Farfin 2012-05-13T18:39:00

I'll have to agree with the controls (especially with picking up) and the throwing motion could use some physics for the objects that are released. But the girl-island idea was unique and cute. :)

BatterSwat by alexandervrs 2012-04-24T02:20:00

Hehe thanks. Make sure you play a 2-3 stages though, I keep introducing new things through each level and go easy on the first levels that the gameplay might look plain at first sight. ;)

BatterSwat by alexandervrs 2012-04-24T03:04:00

Thanks for the input, glad you liked it. :)
Yeah, it was supposed to have a combo system thingy, but didn't quite work as intended, could fix with some adjustments but I barely had anytime for proper testing. :( I also noticed the caterpillars have a bug where they don't do enough damage, I can't change it during the judging, well the bomb pods make up for it though.

BatterSwat by alexandervrs 2012-04-24T03:46:00

I noticed I have uploaded the wrong exe, so I fixed it. Nothing was really changed apart from a leak in the health variable I noticed last minute that could cause instability and health resetting through levels. I mixed up the .exes at upload time, Doh excitement!

BatterSwat by alexandervrs 2012-05-13T18:24:00

@TaoPhoenix
Yes, the combo system and the AI was not working as I'd want it to. Actually I realized I let the multiple enemies hit code in after I submitted, oh well...

@Woodpecker, @murilo & @Pierrec
Thanks, and yeah I agree that after some time it does get boring. Was planning to add other moves, enemies & powerups but you know how it goes, when time is running out, you're just glad you have something done. :)

@JellyFame
Sorry there, I didn't have enough time to convert it in HTML5 as the software I was trying to use "GameMaker HTML5" had showstopper bugs and I relied too much on Windows extensions especially for audio which complicated things.

Science 101 - The Sewer Chronicles by mrainwater 2012-05-13T19:25:00

Seems I couldn't pass the science class. xD

Fun with the growing/shrinking concept, collision was weird at some times and the voice acting was funny, maybe it needed some more variant quotes when you died so it would get that old.

Propolis by sampyxis 2012-05-13T20:36:00

It would be nice to have some powerups and some kind of attack (with the sting maybe?)
Cute art and music though.

Nobody by Yapikom 2012-05-13T23:21:00

It seems this is supposed to be an excerpt from the "Odyssey" where Odysseus has the plan to hide under the sheep in order to get away from the Cyclops's cave. The Cyclops eats some of his allies in his cave and after getting drunk on wine he falls asleep. Then Odysseus and the others pierces his eye with a pole and escapes. The funny part of the myth is that the Cyclops starts running blind for help to the others of his kind and when they ask him "Who did this?" he replies "Nobody did it!", that was actually the name that Odysseus used to trick the Cyclops.
Alright, I am done with the mythology class, -can't help it since I am Greek- gameplay needed some obstacles to be interesting, not commenting on the "obvious", people above have covered me. xD

Escape from Minimars by Adhesion 2012-05-13T23:03:00

Graphics were pretty good. The setting and gameplay was getting pretty boring though, and as far as the controls are concerned, I'd like to be able to control the laser, maybe keyboard+mouse controls could work better here. :)

LD24 — Evolution

The Highbred Pixel by monomanio 2012-09-17T23:09:00

It was pretty stylish. :) And diverse gameplay too, now it needs more content.

Terminal Illness by chorinator 2012-09-17T20:35:00

The controls were a bit on the slippery side plus the collision with the walls were glitchy or non-existant. Plus the bacteria sometimes were approaching extremely fast giving you little time to react. Otherwise a nice shooter game. :)

Cuboid Sandbox by cominu 2012-09-17T21:12:00

Yes, this looks that it could be used as a nice starting point for a game, it is really a sandbox at its current state, but looks nice. :)

Garbage Man: Return to Earth [HD] by nicholi 2012-09-17T21:16:00

Ouch, crashed for me sadly, something with my graphics card being ATI I think.

The Silver Spire by charliecarlo 2012-09-17T21:39:00

It is a pretty nice concept, animations were nice too. :)

Aqualution by alexandervrs 2012-08-28T14:09:00

Oh sorry about the Jellyfish issue guys, I was running out of time so I didn't put proper demonstration and usage of the rock push mechanic in earlier levels. -Actually there is an "example" in the previous stage but it can be bypassed and the rocks aren't being used again at all after that level. I hate running out of time. :/

To beat the giant jellyfish you need to go at the sides of the area and you'll find some floating platforms and you'll notice they have rocks poking at the top, you need to launch the rocks at the jellyfish using the C key. The player's facing direction determines if the rock will be launched left or right when pushing C.

Glad you guys liked it. :)

Aqualution by alexandervrs 2012-09-11T13:34:00

@Pacifist Games, unfortunately it is a known bug here but cannot fix atm due to the rules. However you can either guide the bacteria keys in small batches or try to wiggle around the player so the bacteria comes to the right side. Sorry for that :(

Yes the stages were supposed to have more diversity, more gameplay additions and better layouts, but the time constraints killed our dreams. I think I did all the levels in around 2 hours and 1 hour playtesting them? Not enough time to make something as I wanted it really. :)

Uberlution by Robotic 2012-09-17T20:56:00

Collisions were a bit "stucky" sometimes, and it seems the game could benefit from some other kinds of obstacles & powerups. The small creatures should be a bit more common to spawn though so the gameplay picks up kinda faster. Graphics, lighting effects and music were great though! :)

TreeVolve by GetFun 2012-09-17T20:43:00

Currently it is very slow paced to be enjoyable. The graphics were pretty nice but I suppose you gave them a lot of gravity instead of gameplay and went out of time. Still it certainly shows that it could be developed further post-compo. :)

LD27 — 10 Seconds

Fire, Fire, Burning Bright by Bensonance 2013-09-03T13:11:00

The gameplay needed a bit of a ramp. Was pretty much overwhelming as you started. The graphics were cute :)

10 Second Defence by Christina Nordlander 2013-09-08T14:07:00

I like the concept. The parser gave me some funny responses at times.
I believe it be more helpful if the items were listed and the actions (along with some useless ones) were listed next to them as well.
It could be just me, as I don't really play or make games that have no graphics, but I'd personally have a background image strip on top, description text in the middle and item icons/button at the bottom with their actions, perhaps some music playing in the background which intensifies with each choice.
Not bad for first time. :)

Hurry UP! by Sense 2013-09-03T12:01:00

Pretty cool graphics! Game could use some more obstacles and powerups to spice it up! :)

Planet Smasher by thesunnyk 2013-09-03T13:18:00

That is a pretty clever game mechanic really. Add some graphics, explosions and powerups (like one that increases gravity range and/or power) and it will be a cool game.

T-Minus 10 by bitstim 2013-09-03T11:22:00

This was a pretty cool concept, yes perhaps you should be able to shoot from the beginning. Oculus Rift support huh? Wish I had one of those. :D

Dark Interval by alexandervrs 2013-08-28T14:14:00

D'oh! >.< Updated the link. Should work fine now, I'll download it myself to ensure it's not corrupt now, also fixed a game breaking glitch with the last level transition and added a proper readme.txt file.

I am currently working on the Linux port, will be up soon, the Web version will have to wait a little bit as there are plenty glitches with the sound at the moment.

Dark Interval by alexandervrs 2013-08-28T16:06:00

Linux build added! Ubuntu recommended! Run the command "sudo apt-get install joystick" to enable the gamepad! Unzip and make sure you have the "Dark Interval" file marked as executable in its file properties. (Don't know how to make a .deb package yet u_u)

Anyways, Linux players, enjoy!

Dark Interval by alexandervrs 2013-08-29T14:26:00

I re-uploaded the games, completely removed the filter effects as it could cause a memory leak and crash even when playing with it set to 'off'.

The code is pretty hastily programmed to investigate and figure out where the leak is at the moment, so the safe way is to remove the filter effect completely. I did a full playthrough to ensure the game does not crash anymore, please tell me if it happens to you with the new executables.

Dark Interval by alexandervrs 2013-08-30T18:50:00

Added Web port of the game. Please use a WebGL+Web Audio capable browser. Chrome also supports gamepad!

Dark Interval by alexandervrs 2013-08-31T23:16:00

Thanks guys.

Everyone that has problems with that room, first grab the key quickly from the nearby plant, then turn back and wait until the second press is lower than the first one, that should give you enough time to one-shot and not having to stop in the middle at all. Remember to keep running as you do this. There is a save point right after that room. The game follows a 4 rooms > savepoint pattern. :)

Dark Interval by alexandervrs 2013-09-02T08:14:00

I uploaded new builds with some minor fixes,

First I removed that key in the plant in the room with the double press, it was a cheap move since you could not go back after learning the door needed a key and discouraged a lot of people to continue. I did not change the interval of the press though, it is entirely do-able, you just have to wait until the second press is lower than the first one enough. You need to be precise and calm, as calm as it can be that is.

I moved a door in the first room where 2 keys are required so that the player gets the message about the multi-lock first, this was not clear and confused a lot of people as to why some doors were unlocked twice.

I also added a Greek translation for the captions, mainly so that friends of mine here could enjoy the game in their language. You need to change the "language" in the settings.ini to "el". Default is English "en".

Another minor fix is that the text was being overlapped and confusing people as to when or where they found a key. So I modified that so the text scrolls & fades downwards with the newest message on top.

I hope all these changes fall under the accessibility rule. :)

Dark Interval by alexandervrs 2013-09-29T16:20:00

A little delayed but I added a Mac OSX build for the game (as I recently got a Mac Mini!)

I had submitted this game also on Newgrounds and Kongrefate, got some really good attention on there plus here and from friends that made me consider remaking this from scratch, keeping the base mechanics and concept but adding more content and spicing things up!

Also replies to all your comments above:

@nicotr014, @Mago, @elementz123, @naufr4g0, @jomomomo, @withoutpillow, @Jeremias
Thank you all!! Glad you enjoyed it!

@van noctar
Good to know you enjoyed it, hope you recover from the terror soon! ;)

@thesunnyk
Yes, that's a flaw really, it should have a small delay when examining things and a bit more spice to it.

@kibertoad
Thanks! I am considering to remake this!

@zconnelly13
Thank you! Yes the shake idea was on my mind for so long and finally got to use it. I wish I had more time to spice up the gameplay, but as I am considering remaking this there will be improvements!

@g_o
Aw, I am sorry you didn't like it. Hope if I remake the game it'd be much better.

@Martin_Monosys
Dark room? All of them are dark... kinda!

@manuq
Thanks!! Yeah repetitiveness is an issue, especially if you make games that rely in common shared mechanics across levels without adding enough spice to the gameplay. For me traps and "puzzle"-like rooms added a bit more variety but it needed more at how the game handled.

@Diptoman
Thank you! Long time horror fan too! I will certainly consider expanding this!

@zn01wr
If you're using Windows you should not have this issue(?). If you are using Linux, perhaps you need to install the openAL library via "sudo apt-get install libopenal1" in the Terminal.

@reheated
Thank you! Yes, I did not want to add checkpoints in each room, since the rooms can be also beaten so fast. I needed to have some kind of effective punishment to the player, I believe games today are too forgiving. However there are people who would like to play the game because of the horror theme but wished the game to be easier. I could have added an easy mode if I had more time, but will certainly consider if I remake this.

@zzForrest
Thank you! Will revise the exploration mechanic if I decide to redo this.

@Brian Stegmann
I agree, a reason I wasn't showing the monster all the time but only a for brief fraction of second as you died. Nowadays many games that advertise themselves as horror games rely heavily on jumpscares rather than creating anticipation of the worst slowly emerging from a place you either know or don't expect.

@BadgerPriest, @jwolf, @meszka
Thanks! Will consider an easy mode if I remake this.

@Christina Nordlander
Thank you! Yes, playing in dark with sound up and a gamepad with vibration is highly recommended!
And no problem, I do have a more complex story which I keep for a future horror game I have in mind, but for such a straightforward game I provided a simple story.

@crueltear
Hope to make things more interesting in the future!

@DreamTeam
Thank you! I try to add gamepad support to all my games, the more control schemes the better, more enjoyable and more accessible the game will be! Control is everything in games!

@dudsen
Thank you! Perhaps if there was more time in each room so you can observe and look for solutions first. I stuck to the 10 second theme which did not leave for much time in each level. I'll try to remedy the trial and error issue if I remake this.

Thank you everyone for your comments! All were really inspiring & helpful!

Ha, this was pretty clever :)

Ascension Switch by Nehmulos 2013-09-03T12:09:00

It was like a tabletop RPG, nice idea.

LD41 — Combine 2 Incompatible Genres

Dragoon Drop by jhandsy 2018-04-25T10:48:52Z

Neat idea! Plays almost like an oldskool RPG board game!

Cooking Fantasy VI by Loowees 2018-04-25T10:44:46Z

It's not very straightforward, but it's a nice concept. 2D sprites with 3D environment reminds me of Breath of Fire III

Ultimate Hero Simulator by antvelm 2018-05-05T01:14:30Z

Cute graphics and style but I find the controls a bit frustrating even with gamepad, I think the doggy just gets in the way as it is. Perhaps the eating could be a little more automated, maybe just press UP key to throw stocked food at him and he chases it around?
