LD24 — Evolution

Evolutionary Machines by Ulixava 2012-08-27T03:00:00

Overall, I think that you have a solid basis here, but the mechanics don't match the gameplay. The jumping is obnoxiously hard - I made it to the puzzle with the second jumping ladder and guns and gave up - and I have no idea what it's talking about with respect to pressure plates.

That said, the core mechanics are definitely in place - the jumping physics feel right, and the game makes me want to explore. I think that with a bit more balance this could be a lot better.

Primordial Pool by ben657 2012-08-27T03:11:00

I love the art style in this! It's lo-fi, but effective! Very cool!

I think that the game needs a bit more feedback about when things are happening. Like, when you are absorbing things, or when you are getting hurt versus stealing from the enemy.

Overall - great!

Unnatural Selection by gritfish 2012-09-09T00:40:00

Awesome concept, and solid execution. I like the restraint required - you can't just blindly kill things. I could see this being expanded into a really deep game.

My criticisms are more technical in nature: it's easy to get caught under a squirrel and die from being unable to get out, and the physics feel a bit floaty. For a 72 hour jam though, that's a minor complaint at best - great work!

Evolutionator! by CataclysmicKnight 2012-08-28T02:24:00

Cool, a really fun game. Challenging, but not overly so, and so I liked it a lot. One thing - add sound! sfxr makes it really easy to get some cool effects. Great work!

End Humanity! by SFX 2012-08-27T03:33:00

Hey - I got an error playing this after a few seconds. Screenshot here: http://imgur.com/QpUmT

Anyway, I didn't rate your game, but it looks cool! Reminds me of this old game called Crimsonland.

End Humanity! by SFX 2012-09-03T16:03:00

Cool, Love 0.8 definitely manages to fix this.

I like the game - slick mechanics, and while the graphics could certainly use some work, they work well for this. Good work!

Adversity by philomory 2012-09-03T16:16:00

Runs fine on Linux, after chasing down the proper gems to install.

Cool game. Very outside the box, I like it - it feels like there is a lot of depth to it. I didn't really figure out how to consistently win - it felt fairly random to me - but I feel that with more time and some digging through your code, I'll figure things out more.

Overall, this is an excellent entry into the contest! Great work!

Foodvolution by cobrajs 2012-08-31T01:54:00

Nice! Needs more content, but the idea is fun - I could see you making some interesting puzzles out of this. Great work!

Adapt or Die! by Datw 2012-09-03T15:58:00

Cool - this is really... slick.

I like the changing levels, it's a neat concept, and I think that you pull it off well. It's challenging, but the levels are never too long that it feels like a chore to try one over and over again until you get it. Great work!

My one criticism is that the physics are really floaty, which makes some of the platforming parts unnecessarily challenging.

Great work!

LD24 Tower Defense by ishav 2012-09-06T04:44:00

Solid! Pretty hard, but nice mechanics. You really have to be quick on your feet. I like the mechanic of having to aim your towers all to a single point - it's pretty different, and adds another dynamic to the game. Excellent work.

EvolutionWar by Spouwny 2012-09-03T17:46:00

Cool. I really like the core idea, and the gameplay. It's pretty tricky to get the hang of. I couldn't always figure out why my workers were dying, and I don't understand why sometimes I can't build new units even though I had enough resources. Really though, I like the idea and execution - with a bit more explanation, and maybe some nicer graphics, I could see this being something really cool.

Excellent entry!

Oneway by azurenimbus 2012-09-03T19:05:00

Very cool. I like the style, and the sounds are great. It took me a bit to figure out what I was supposed to be doing, but in any case it was really enjoyable. I could see taking a bit more of a music edge to this working well - ie. make the sounds a bit more integrated with the movement. Anyway, good work!

Evolution Defense by franklyn 2012-08-27T03:30:00

This one didn't do much for me, to be honest. It felt like it devolved into just letting the enemies line up by your tower and pressing and holding the mouse on them. The weapons need to feel kinetic, the enemies need to feel like more than just numbers.

You have the workings of a really good game here, I think - I feel like it's just before the tipping point, a bit more time and you'd have something awesome.

Super Robocade by VoEC 2012-08-28T01:06:00

Solid take on a classic game - simple, polished, balanced. Really liked this one!

Darwin Defenders by hi-scor.es 2012-09-03T17:34:00

Cool, I like the core concept - plays into the theme nicely, and is fun to play as well! I think that execution could use a bit of work - namely, your ship gets stuck in place when clicking, and you can't click and hold to fire. Overall though, great work!

Involucion by elxris 2012-08-28T00:35:00

I feel like I don't get this. I saw that you put a tutorial in, but it might be nice to have a more in depth explanation (even just on this game page, not necessarily in game).

That said, I still like it. You put a lot of thought into this clearly, and the game itself is satisfying if confusing. I just wish I knew what the little guys were thinking. In any case, great work :)

An Amoeba's Awesome Adventure. by zakchaos 2012-08-27T03:46:00

This looks like the start of a grand idea, although I feel that you ran out of time. Controls aren't explained, and I can't really tell what anything does. Red balls make you smaller, green make you bigger, but to what ends?

In any case, I like the style. Check out sfxr for some really awesome/easy sound effects - it goes a long way.

SURVIVE by Ragzouken 2012-08-28T00:20:00

Cool! This game took me a bit to get the hang of, but I think that the underlying principles are really great. A lot of fun!

Mystic Evolution Quest by garywiss6 2012-09-04T01:06:00

Nifty idea, terrible colors!

Homes Through Time! by Materie 2012-08-27T04:08:00

There's a saying in software development: the first 90% of the work takes 90% of the time. The last 10% of the work takes the other 90% of the time.

I think that this is especially true in your case - you almost have a game here. All of the boring "mechanical" work seems to be taken care of!

In any case, good work!

Human Evolution by ArkadyDracul 2012-09-09T19:58:00

Cute. Beat it on my second try. I think that the objects sometimes end up blending into the background too much, but in any case, a solid entry. Good work!

OS: Evolution by zatyka 2012-08-30T23:39:00

Great game - simple, but very nice. I really enjoyed it, I also like the Portal-esque theme to it.

My one thought is that the platforming was a bit unforgiving, and the controls were perhaps too responsive - some of the levels it took me forever to hit the jumps.

Overall though, I really enjoyed this entry. Great work!

The Sky in the Room by Porpentine 2012-09-01T05:29:00

Woah. Awesome.

Run and Transform by plule 2012-09-09T00:44:00

For linux: You should give the executable the .love extension to make it clear what it is. Double clicking didn't work, but it ran fine in love.

Anyway, your game is really nice. I think it needs better effects - it feels a bit punishing sometimes - but I like it. Good use of the theme too.

Young Earth Road Trip by saguaro 2012-09-04T05:33:00

This game is hilarious, I love it!

kinetic dream by mdkess 2012-08-27T04:10:00

MrPhil: What is your system? If you are on Mac OS - I don't know if my executable works, I don't have a system to test it on. If so, try going to the directory and running:

java -Djava.library.path=native/macosx -jar data.jar

kinetic dream by mdkess 2012-08-28T01:17:00

For the people having problems - could you open a command line and type "java -version"

I think that the issue is having Java 1.6 installed - my game (apparently) requires Java 1.7, so you'll have to upgrade to get this to work. I'm going to see about compiling a version that doesn't require such a late version of Java - bear with me, this is the first time I've released a Java application into the wild. Thanks a ton for all of the feedback so far too!

kinetic dream by mdkess 2012-08-28T02:14:00

I uploaded a Java 6 version of my game - if the submitted version gives you a version issue, grab the Java 6 build from here:

http://ma.rtin.xxx/downloads/kinetic_dream_java6.zip

This is the same code as the one I originally submitted, however I didn't know that Java had such strict version requirements. Live and learn, live and learn.

kinetic dream by mdkess 2012-08-28T02:25:00

Awesome MrPhil. Thanks for taking the time to figure it out, I really hope that the game was worth it!

kinetic dream by mdkess 2012-08-28T13:13:00

@timtipgames: Ahh... you weren't supposed to see that gun. That was originally going to be a plasma cannon or mine or something, but I guess I compiled the wrong version in my haste to get a Java 6 version out. The corrected version is out now.

Thanks for the reviews guys, it really means a lot :)

Evowing by Cracky 2012-09-08T03:47:00

Really good entry! I liked everything about this game - quite fun. Really hard though.

The AI is nifty - at first I thought I was playing against people. I'm not sure why.

The bloody princess of Ludumia by khoa 2012-09-04T01:03:00

FYI, your game works fine on Linux (Ubuntu 12.04). I just cloned your git repo, and everything worked. I just needed to:

apt-get install libsdl-ttf2.0-dev libvorbis-dev libsndfile1-dev libfreeimage-dev libxinerama-dev
gem install pango
gem install gosu

And then I just ran the game with ruby 1.9.3

Anyway, your game is really great! A very nice take on the theme, and really fun too! After a bunch of tries, I finally won (18 killed, 32 seconds, so I think I just got lucky).

Gobbulator by tastive 2012-08-31T02:01:00

Slick gameplay, fantastic sound!

Evoquarium by EnigmaBlade 2012-09-01T02:53:00

I really liked this entry. It plays well with the theme, and it's nice concept that's enjoyable to play. After about 4700 points, I ran out of things to do though.

Anyway, great work!

Firefly by timtipgames 2012-08-27T02:52:00

Overall, I thought that this game was a really cool take on the theme. It's pretty, sounds great and has a solid idea behind it. It took me a while to understand - given more time, I would hope that you would break down the tutorial a bit more, or at least have a way to go back to it.

Additionally, I thought that the feedback loop wasn't really present. It was hard to tell if you were doing well or not. To be more forgiving, it should perhaps be easier to get seeds. Also, it was hard to tell what was happening to your plants - for example, when pollinated, it's difficult to tell whether that pollination was (immediately) beneficial or not.

Overall, I think this is an excellent game. It's clear that you put a lot of thought to it and really took the theme to heart. Great work! I have no doubt that you could develop this into something that would be a big hit on Android or iOS (or Kongregate for that matter).

Ascension Garden by sclark39 2012-08-28T02:35:00

I played your in progress version of this, I was really curious to see how you'd go about making this a game. It turned out well! I like this a lot - you tried something new, and didn't stick with something tried and true. I'm going to check out your source, I'm curious to learn the magic behind this. Great work!

Legacy of the Cavemen by Yngar 2012-08-27T03:42:00

Nudity! Oh noes! Great work on the art - I think that it's really good. Downside is, there's not much gameplay here.

Hard Life 3X by echa 2012-08-30T23:48:00

Very clever game, and a fantastic take on the theme. Love it!

- EvoluTion - by Hvedrung 2012-08-27T03:53:00

Cool, I like the physics. This is a decent, fun game! Great work! The only two points of feedback I have are that it that it might be nice to respawn, and that the game is a bit simple but time constraints, time constraints....

Inu No Ongaeshi by Shmarah 2012-08-28T01:37:00

This must have been a lot of fun to make! Well done.

LEVOLUTION! by xk 2012-08-27T04:44:00

Cool! Very polished, I like it.

Bubble Breeders by blay09 2012-09-09T00:53:00

Didn't leave a review - exploded at launch. Not sure what the cause is.

Anyway, take a look at my game for how I packaged things up. I think it's a bit easier. I'd never made a JNLP before, but it turned out to be really straightforward, and is probably the easiest way to distribute your game.

Unnatural Selection by pereubu 2012-08-28T00:08:00

Simple and fun. The mechanics are easy, but there's a lot of depth. I think that there should be some motivation to not hide all of the time - ie. some way to force a person out of cover. Anyway, I enjoyed it :)

Pixels through time by Arsenio117 2012-09-08T14:26:00

Didn't leave a review - on Ubuntu Linux x64, I get the same syntax error as the others. Also - you should attach your source to your entry.

Evolution Gem by Oceanspud 2012-08-31T00:03:00

Cool - the game runs on DOS Box in Linux just fine, so you should add that to the download list. OS X will work fine as well. To make it run (assuming the game is extracted to /users/username/evogem):

sudo apt-get install dosbox
dosbox

Then, in dosbox:
mount c /home/username/evogem
C:
EVOLVE.EXE

Anyway, I like it a lot. Very old school, and very cool. I played a bunch of times, never got far: high score just 7798, but I'll keep trying :) Also, you're crazy for writing this in QBasic (so bonus points for that)!

One point - I think that it would be nice to be able to skip the introduction rooms after the first play, and the game needs more instructions.

Overall, an excellent entry, which is both fun and sticks to the theme. Very out of the box, great work.

Convergent by willh 2012-08-27T03:58:00

I love this! This is seriously cool. I adore games that force you to do two things at once, it is a very interesting state of mind to be in being forced to switch between two tasks. And you pull it off really well - in 48 hours of work, this is damn impressive. The best entry so far, in my most humble opinion. Fantastic work. Polish this up and release it!

Evergen by Chimera 2012-08-27T04:26:00

Nifty! Sound would be a nice addition, but in any case, I really enjoy the experimental gameplay. It's a neat experience, figuring out your world. I like that this game doesn't try to stick to a pre-defined motif, that takes a lot of talent to pull off.

You could do better with communicating the controls and energy input/outputs, but after a bit of playing around it was easy enough to figure out. Good work!

The Darwin Wars Mud by pbjorklund 2012-09-05T03:26:00

Nobody will ever defeat the unstoppable chamption of darwin, 1l11l1lll1l1lll1lll1l.

This is good - I think that you need to add some bots though. It was totally dead when I arrived. I like the game though, good work!

What The Flock by MrPhil 2012-08-28T02:27:00

If you're looking to implement flocking behavior, check out the game Programming Game AI By Example by Mat Buckland. It's my favorite game development book - awesome results, and beautiful code too.

blob by pknowles 2012-08-27T04:03:00

On Chrome, on Ubuntu 12.04, the game just shows the black and white screen - no colored blobs as your screenshot suggests. I didn't leave a rating, but let me know if I can help you patch this.

Master Of Evolution by Daniel Heidemann 2012-08-29T12:13:00

Really good! The physics are a bit floaty feeling, and the graphics aren't great, but the core game is a lot of fun. I really like how you have to hunt for things and manage your base at the same time - I could see with more time this developing into a really intricate game - the meat of it is already there. Plus, it really sticks to the theme, so great work!

Super Clew Land by Team Clew 2012-09-16T18:55:00

This is a great game! Cool mechanics, a lot of depth, good controls and it plays to the theme as well.

Downside is the checkpoints being tied to evolution. My last evolution was pretty far from the purple spike part of the game, so after a few tries at the flying section I just gave up since it took so long to get back to. It would be nice to have fixed checkpoints instead, or some similar mechanic.

In any case, this was a really enjoyable entry.

Beyond Our Sacred Sun by the31 2012-08-30T23:44:00

An n-body simulation mixed with Galcon - while it's certainly incomplete (as you said), I really like the idea behind it, and I think that you could develop it into a neat game. I hope that you stick with this idea - I might just have to borrow it if not ;)

darwin_award by heuermh 2012-09-04T05:25:00

Took me a while to get the hang of. I'm still not sure that I get it. You might want to post detailed instructions on this page or in a readme. In any case, the core concept is really cool, and the game has slick graphics, plus it really plays to the theme in a fundamental way. Good work!

dai'narcur by Athaudia 2012-08-29T12:23:00

I like this entry - it fits with the theme, and the idea of attaching parts is nice. Very spore-esque, I enjoyed it a lot. Great work, this is one of the entries that I really hope gets fleshed out and developed further after the contest!

A point of critique: I think that the controls are a bit awkward - I'd prefer relative controls (turn left, turn right, accelerate, brake), and it's a little slow paced for my tastes - you turn so slowly, that it takes forever to kill the first few bad guys, as you mostly end up just spinning in circles. Still, this is a fantastic entry!

life, undeath by zillix 2012-09-16T18:34:00

Great take on the theme - very solid mechanics. I assume there's only the one ending? I really liked this game!

Bug: it seems if you try to upgrade a weapon (at least the flamethrower) past level 4, it takes your money but the weapon doesn't improve.

Collect by amidos2006 2012-09-09T05:36:00

Excellent entry - I can't really think of any criticisms. The trails that you leave each time really make the game - that was a very subtle, nice touch. Great work!

The Erebus and the Terror by sfernald 2012-08-28T01:22:00

My first N/A rating on graphics :)

I like this - it's nice to see something different. Your writing voice is very consistent, and the game is perfectly sized - the world is small, detailed enough to have purpose but not to the extent that it's overwhelming.

I haven't played very many interactive fiction games, so it may just be my lack of experience, but I got stuck on this one a few times, so I think that in the non obvious points a few hints might be nice.

Other than that though, great. I'm very impressed - you've inspired me to try to get into the IF world, which I've always known has existed but I've never taken the time to explore.

Sun God by Switchbreak 2012-08-31T03:01:00

Cool, I like the concept and the game - a more unique approach than most! Great work!

Class Warfare by gabeochoa 2012-08-27T04:15:00

For what it's worth, the java web start works fine on Ubuntu 12.04.

Anyway, cool game. Simple but fully implemented, I enjoyed it. I agree that it's hard to find yourself in the beginning, but I feel like that's the point. Good work!

Strike of Rage ! by deepnight 2012-08-30T00:28:00

This game is awesome. Love the graphics, love the controls, really awesome. Would be nice to be able to restart levels when you die though :) Anyway, super cool.

Dojo by Zemmi 2012-09-16T18:59:00

Very stylish, and quite innovative. Excellent entry.

Ulovetion by Colapsydo 2012-09-03T17:29:00

Good entry. The physics were a bit wonky I thought, but otherwise it was a really solid concept and idea. Plays well into the theme, I really enjoyed it.

The Legend of Elzad by arkeus 2012-08-28T00:16:00

Wow! A stunning amount of content for the 48 hour contest. The controls and graphics are great - it really feels like a super Nintendo era Zelda clone. As you said, the game lacks direction, but even still it was easy enough to find my way around. It doesn't really have anything to do with the theme, but whatever, it's a lot of fun. Honestly not much would be needed to make this into a complete package - great work! This is really fantastic, certainly one of the best entries that I have seen.

The Balance by mr_Hk_ 2012-08-28T00:31:00

Wow! Sounds and looks beautiful. I'd love to know how you do the rendering of the tail - it looks fantastic. So fluid!

Obelisk Preserver by Nanolotl 2012-09-08T14:23:00

Didn't leave a rating - no Windows box available - but I just wanted to drop in and say that your screenshots look really cool! I'd love a youtube video, so I can see what I'm missing out on.

The Evolution of Flight by AaronYip 2012-09-08T02:25:00

Great game! I really enjoy the game - I feel that the planes power goes up nicely with the difficulty. I like the gradient in the background getting darker - it's a simple touch that really helps with the sense of progress.

The boss was a bit hard :) I was put off by the un-dodgeable double attack, but that's a minor criticism at best :P

Overall though, very nicely done. I like your take on the theme.

Go Darwin by StabAlarash 2012-08-28T00:23:00

Haha! This is great, I love it. simple concept, well executed and polished. Good work.

Homo Vermes by madflame991 2012-09-09T17:29:00

593. Missed one arm.

Praise: Good concept, fits with the theme, solid execution. Simple, but deep. Excellent work.

Criticism: I felt like the game could be explained more - it took me a bit to figure out what the dead nodes were, how they were created, etc.

Gems of the Evolving Land by RawBits 2012-09-08T20:23:00

Nice take on the theme - I like manipulating the landscape. There needs to be some more gameplay, but I could certainly see this being the basis of an interesting game. Good work!

Unnatural Selection by Porter 2012-08-31T03:56:00

Cool, the engine seems solid, I have this bookmarked for later. I really hope that you continue it, I can definitely see this going places.

2052 by Mach60KAS 2012-08-29T12:16:00

Great! It's nice to see outside the box games here! I like your writing style a lot, the world was nicely detailed. Have you done other interactive fiction before? I'd love to play it if so! The downside was that it felt a bit random - you pick an option, and ultimately get to a good or bad ending, rather than having any chance to explore.

Overall, this was a very enjoyable read. :)

The SuperBugs by Josh @ Dreamland 2012-08-31T03:54:00

On Ubuntu, you'll need to install libalure-dev via apt-get to make this run. Developer guy, you might want to package this with the zip.

Really cool idea, this plays into the theme very well and in a deeply technical way. Platforming is fun too, although I think that the few is a bit too zoomed in for my tastes. Anyway, I really like the idea of having self adjusting enemies, very nifty. I've got your source in my "to explore" list, I feel like I have a thing or two to learn.

I enjoy the murder rainbows from the flamethrower.

Evolved by Nimphious 2012-08-27T02:04:00

Congrats on submitting! Don't discredit yourself - that's a big thing, and I bet 90% of the people who said that they were going to compete didn't bother.

A cool take on it might be: every time a side wins (to get a coin, to beat the enemy, etc,) they get to manipulate the terrain. So instead of the characters evolving, the world does.

HumanTECH by minism 2012-08-28T06:14:00

On Ubuntu I got a blue screen and an error, apparently this is because I was running an old version of Love (the one you get when you run sudo apt-get install love). Updating it to the latest version fixed the problem.

This game is remarkably complete - it's very tightly designed, the mechanics work, and the game is enticing. Graphics are great, controls are tight, sound is good - this is an exceptional entry into this competition! My only complaint is more mechanical - I'd much prefer arrow keys over i,j,k,l for shooting, but it's not a huge deal. Also the enemies would sometimes get stuck inside walls, and I'd have to punch them to death through the walls, which isn't the end of the world.

Awesome!

Omega Architecture by kibertoad 2012-09-03T18:51:00

I couldn't get the Linux version to run properly on Ubuntu 12.04, so I didn't leave a rating. It's missing the log4j.properties file, which I had to copy from the Windows one. Then I had to run it as root. After that, it seemed to start - I saw the splash screen - but it crashed with a NullPointerException. Here's the log: http://pastebin.com/rpRpRLRC

Not sure what's going on - your game looks really neat, I want to play! :)

Super Genome: Hyper Evolution Turbo Edition by Raptor85 2012-08-28T05:19:00

Cool, I'm glad that I could be of service!

I like your game - it fits with the theme really well, and I think that it has a lot of awesome ideas. Not to mention, automatic combat is really charming. I also really like that you are building against your own engine, that is really awesome.

Criticisms: mouse movement is a bit awkward, it's easy to get stuck on corners. Dying forces you to restart the game. It's not clear how many DNA types of each class you have - a bit more information would be nice.

Overall though, great! You clearly put a lot of effort and thought into this, and I think it paid off.

Polish this game up, you have the fundamentals down, but now you need to complete it.

Also - sound! sfxr makes it stupidly easy to create good sound effects. I had never used sound in a game before, but I tried for the contest, and it ended up taking no time at all.

Really great! Graphics, controls, sound, gameplay, all solid. Plus it plays to the theme well - I really like the mechanic of gaining abilities from your failings. Fantastic entry.

Critiquing this as if it were a full game, developed over months instead of a weekend (because, frankly it's hard to find fault with it given the time constraints): I think that the evolution concept is too repetitive. I know that I have to get hit to get the shield. I know that I have to fall to get double jump. The first couple times, cool, but it seems too repetitive.

Great! I love the flashlight, and it's amazing that a game can actually be scary without a ton of graphical effects. Good pacing, my two criticisms: the game needs an ending, and the platforming section was a bit annoying (although not unforgivingly so). In any case, a very solid entry. Great work!

Looks good - you built a full game here. The game was enjoyable and enticing, if a bit slowly paced for my taste. Overall, great work! Also, yay ponies!

Great use of the theme! I really can't criticize - except to say that the choppy scrolling part was a bit annoying, and I think that save points get introduced too soon (I died a few times on the first monsters... yeah). In any case, amazing game - a great take on the theme, and well implemented too! Awesome!

Err, by too soon, I meant, too late. But anyway, that's a minor criticism at best.

Awesome! I really like this entry - very well done.

I really enjoyed this entry. It really stuck to the theme, and it managed to tell a story in few pixels.

I think that as a negative, the evolution mechanics were tied to your position in the level. It would have been cool to have a problem that could only be solved by jumping in place or running back and forth - the rigidity of the level design detracts from the evolutionary mechanics.

That said - you stuck to the theme, and built a game with solid mechanics and a neat twist on traditional platformer games. I hope that you develop this further!

Cool! Would have definitely benefited from some animation for attacking, but good work. I like 1000 kittens mode best.

One thing - your physics is a bit buggy, and you can sometimes clip through walls. Not game breaking by any means, but shouldn't be too hard to fix.
