LD23 — Tiny World

Virus Leak by ionas619 2012-04-24T23:04:00

Nicely done. I was starting to get a tiny bit bored, but then I reached the bosses. They were pretty cool and some of their projectiles looked pretty cool as well.

The game seems to run quite well on Linux through Wine, except for when you get hit by the bosses which causes a lag spike.

It'd be interesting to see some more levels and a bit more complex ones as well.

Bugs Planet by Cyboot 2012-05-13T10:07:00

Nice. I like the idea and the game play. I sense that there are a lot of cool things that could be added to a game like this. The applet version runs perfectly on Linux (it is the only version I tried). The only issue is that there are some annoying lag spikes whenever I destroy one of those spawners.

My Kid Dropped The Planet by MadGnomeGamer 2012-05-05T13:59:00

Lol, what a brilliant idea. I really like the art style as well. It feels really well made and polished. I felt bad every time I chose to play evil tho, but that also proved to be a bit more interesting. :)

Cyberoid by Pedro de Quadros 2012-04-24T22:40:00

The game plays well and is easy to launch. It is also nice of you to include source code. I did feel that the music fits the game nicely. The platformer mechanics feel solid and work well. I would have liked a more complex map tho. I couldn't really find any good place to shoot from. Most targets just floated through the floor of the platform you spawn on. Nice work!

The Wizard Delven by Polar 2012-05-05T13:30:00

It took a little while, even with the help of the readme file to figure out how to do things, but I eventually managed to gather up some resources, craft some items, get some higher tier tools and so forth. I did never figure out how to deal with the enemies or whatever they are in the bottom right corner of the map. The movement controls were quite awkward as well, making it difficult to move around much. It could be quite fun with some more work tho. Crafting is always fun. :)

Bactarium by csanyk 2012-05-13T10:15:00

Cool idea. I think it would be more fun if you could move a bit faster tho. It looks cool when one of the "teams" converges on the other tho.

Poiesis by Them Games 2012-04-25T18:42:00

No doubt the most beautiful and innovative game I've played so far. It captures the theme brilliantly as well. I would love to see some more content tho. I ran it on Linux using Wine, and except for some rendering issues in the corner and some quirks with the mouse control it worked very well. Great work!

Spaceship In The Sky With Colors by fysx 2012-05-13T09:09:00

Pretty cool idea. It was challenging yet fast and simple to learn the basic mechanics. Graphics and sounds was well suited for the game. For whatever reason the Linux download didn't run for me, it just loaded up the main menu and then I got a "Segmentation Fault". Luckily I could just run the Windows version through Wine instead. I'm running LOVE 0.8.0 (Rubber Piggy).

Petri by Tomalla 2012-05-05T14:52:00

This is a great game. Too bad it is so short. I think that the underlying game play idea lends itself to a whole bunch of additional interesting levels that might be worth exploring. The game feel rather polished as well. Congrats!

Corgi Recon Force by sirpalee 2012-04-28T12:42:00

Nice platformer. It's impressive that you managed to build the engine for this yourself on top of just plain OpenGL in such a short time. I would have much preferred a less repetitive dirt tile and a separate tile for dirt that you can walk in front of tho. There is also some annoying aliasing (at least when I run it). The windows release of the game works perfectly on Linux tho with the exception of the sound (at least for me).

The low gravity makes it feel a bit strange as well, and the jumping mechanic doesn't always seem to register.

Overall it is a solid platformer. Nice work!

Small Slime Adventure by VoidChronos 2012-04-26T22:14:00

I like the idea, but the game is way too hard

Crazy.Stupid.Games by Crazy.Stupid.Games 2012-04-24T23:15:00

Game seems to run fine on Linux through Wine. It is extremely difficult to avoid running into cars (or being run into by the cars) as well as keeping on the road. I could barely get away from the spawn area most of the time.

Protect Da World by Sankacoffee51 2012-04-24T22:28:00

Game runs perfectly fine for me on Linux. First time I tried I managed to walk into a wall and get stuck. Took me a little while to figure out how it was meant to be played, but once I figured it out it kept me busy trying to defend the world from all the evil world-snatchers.

Nice idea. Could have used a more complex map tho, and I'd rather play a game like this in a small window.

Cat Planet by shaunxcode 2012-04-25T06:38:00

The game starts out running just fine for the first few seconds, but then the frame rate just drops down to zero and simply stops working. I'm running Linux. I loled at the idea tho.

Arnold Bros (est. 1905) by fanatiko 2012-04-25T19:15:00

Quite enjoyable game! The clean graphics and titles in each room reminded me of VVVVVV. Music was pretty eery which set a good atmosphere.

Unusable Man and the Orbs of Exponential Growth by samwoakley 2012-05-05T11:17:00

Cool idea. Simple yet effective game mechanics. I never really managed to jump over much tho, so that particular feature didn't feel that useful to me. Good work!

Last World by Jiddo 2012-04-24T07:58:00

Thanks for the feedback. We have added a Java Web Start version now that we are hoping (fingers crossed) will work on mac. We would love it if you could give it another go, azurenimbus.

We will look into performance issues as soon as possible. We'll get back to you when we have some results, Werxzy. Thanks!

Last World by Jiddo 2012-04-24T21:37:00

We have now improved the performance a bit. Hopefully it should lag less now. There is also an Applet version now, but it appears to be a bit laggy (at least one the machine we tested it on).

Last World by Jiddo 2012-04-25T06:28:00

Thanks for the feedback. We are glad that you like it Lawrence. We will see what we can do to add a scoring system. for it.

Milo, we actually did consult a physics student when setting up the gravitational forces in the game, but we ended up deciding that realism wasn't fun enough, so we sort of had to butcher some of those laws of physics to make it work. Maybe we overdid it tho?

MadGnomeGamer, I'm sorry to hear that. Could you tell us which operating system, java version (and vendor) and which browser you are using and we will try to get to the bottom of this?

Last World by Jiddo 2012-04-25T19:19:00

Thanks for the feedback guys!

NAMKCOR, we were planning on making the tutorial a separate stage of the game where nothing dangerous spawned, but unfortunately we didn't have time. The tutorial is a rather late addition anyways. We'll see if we can't fix that tho.

bcdefg123, I'm sorry to hear that. I've never seen that error before. Looking it up on Google it seems to be a rather common problem (especially with Minecraft players), usually a driver issue. From what I understand the only solution is to update your graphics drivers. I'd also like to assure you that the file is not malicious in any way. The exe is just generated using Launch4J from the crossplatform Java JAR file, which I doubt it'll warn you about.

Last World by Jiddo 2012-04-25T20:32:00

The moons actually allow you to shoot lasers at incoming fireballs and asteroids. Click with the mouse in the direction of your target when you have some moons and they'll go pew pew. :)

Last World by Jiddo 2012-04-26T09:07:00

*GFX/Sound guy here*
I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for the great feedback!

Last World by Jiddo 2012-05-05T09:45:00

Thanks for the feedback everyone!

We are in the process of optimizing both the physics engine and the rendering by quite a bit. We're also adding in distinct levels, powerups and we are going to implement a simple scoring system as well. :)

We never even thought twice about the Java cache really. IIRC it is enabled by default and shouldn't be a problem for most people, but we'll have to look into whether there is any way we can make it work without using the cache (even tho I doubt it). Which version did you try? I'm guessing it was either the webstart or applet one?

Last World by Jiddo 2012-05-05T21:37:00

@MadGnomeGamer:
I can't imagine why it would act strangely for you with that setup. Everything seems to be more then up to spec. If you are up for it, try running the Crossplatform JAR version from the command line (Run the java.exe from your Java installation with the arguments: -jar LastWorld.jar) and see if you get any stack trace. Thanks! :)

@KevinWorkman:
Ah, that makes sense. I'm guessing that the LWJGL library might simply the use of the cache to work. I'll try looking into that until the next time. Thanks!

Last World by Jiddo 2012-05-06T09:22:00

It certainly does sound like there is something odd going on with your Java installation, but I can't even imagine what could cause something like that. Oh well, thanks a lot for your efforts tho. I'll be on the lookout for others who experience similar problems as well, just in case it is not a unique problem.

Walker by Catman 2012-04-25T19:06:00

Really weird concept, but also a good one! The physics and controls felt a bit off and made it hard to steer the guy around, but the amount of creativeness made it enjoyable still.

Rubiq's Garden by youdonotexist 2012-04-25T18:51:00

The mechanics are really clever and could make for some interesting puzzles. The enemies made the game a bit hard though, and often spawned on top of the player. Especially the pollen thingies were a bit too hard to avoid. I'm sure you could take these mechanics to much greater heights if you expanded upon them and had more time to think up clever level layouts.

Tiny Invasion by Cappibara 2012-04-27T17:08:00

Everyone has to start somewhere, and making a game isn't nearly a trivial task. Making a game and not being able to reach all your goals is a lot better than not attempting to make one at all though, so in a way it's fun to see that there are first projects like these. Just keep making games and you will gradually see them become a lot better :)

Phi by Thomas Bowker 2012-04-25T20:43:00

Fun puzzle! It was cool starting out near the end and having to figure out how to open the door through exploring the tiny world :) Atmosphere was great but I got disoriented a few times and getting back on track took ages with that walking speed. The whole thing reminded me of Myst with a twist and was very fun to play! I spent about 45 mins in it which is a lot more than many other jam games I've played :)

I just have to mention that the sound that the pillars make is horrible and I had to turn the volume down not to get a headache from it, but sadly that also lowered the lovely sound from the small cube creatures.

The Lump World by Kralle 2012-04-24T23:52:00

Had a lot of issues with the selection of units. Seems to work randomly some times but not always. The sound is better left off. But the idea is good and I have seen a few titles that implement it which I have found fun. ^^

Tiny Garden of Hope by steamgirl 2012-04-28T12:13:00

Great work! Nice idea, nice implementation, nice graphics and nice game play. A good game across the board. Took me a little while to figure out the controls because I was too stupid to read the instructions.

The game runs nicely on Linux with Wine.

Your Little Tale by LFleck 2012-04-25T17:53:00

Nice idea. The web version worked perfectly fine for me, even tho it was a bit slow when initially loading the page. I don't think that I fully understood the mechanics of the game tho. The graphics look great and the background tune is nice. Good work!

Little Biyubi by edbadiux 2012-04-25T19:11:00

Really good game. I couldn't stop playing it until reached a place where I just kept falling down over and over because I'm crap at the game. Works great on Linux except for the shell script launcher which needs the file name of the jar file escaped due to the white space in the name.

I like how you could make the graphics look so charming and old-school even in such a tiny window. The graphics is just truly great. It is also more fun then most other games and has more content as well. I'd prefer less places for me to fall to my death tho. Great work!

Rally Mites by siasia 2012-04-26T21:35:00

I managed to crash into every single thing (wall or otherwise) in the game. Does that mean I win? :)

Nice game! I I really like how the controls feel and the setting. The graphics give a sort of mixed impression. Some of it look really simple repeated tiles and some of it is much more detailed and good looking. Overall - Great work!

The Collector by blob 2012-04-26T09:41:00

[Multiple team members post from this account!]

Wow that was a cool game! Had no problems with aiming, perhaps mapping the controls to the w,a,s,d would have made more sense, so that you don't have to push your arms too much to the right, but that's a minor issue. I really like how this ties to the theme - the mage trying to find stuff for his terrarium. I also like the fact that there is a leveling system, that defines what creatures you can get for your tiny world. One thing that I couldn't see, which I see now from the screenshots, is any indication of how much health you've got left. I think the heart in the HUD is shrinking when you have less health, but in the heat of battle, it's not really clear - at one point I thought that I'm invincible and of course died a little after :D I also like the fact that the world is open for you to explore. Perhaps some restriction or a clear warning when you get to the lower levels, since I went there and was just level 2, so I had to run the majority of the time, then actually battle the creatures found there. Another thing is, when you kill certain enemies, but walk through their spawn point, they appear again, which is kind of disappointing, especially if you run into a dead end and then turn back and the enemies that you just killed are there again. But apart of those things, the game is great! I enjoyed playing it for sure!

Space Dozer by desmarkie 2012-04-26T21:45:00

I'm impressed. At first the game didn't look like much on the screenshot. The game mechanics are really simple but also very unique, and fun. The graphics are simplistic but they fit the game perfectly.

Unfortunately it didn't take many attempts before I realized that you can pretty much cheat, making the game way too easy. Oh well. It is a great game anyways! :)

Circus Flea by Ted Brown 2012-04-25T18:19:00

Simple yet effective idea which has been very well realized and feels complete. The little fleas feel very alive despite just being a tiny dot, and the whole setting made me smile. Judging by the VO you had a lot of fun making it, kudos for being an awesome dad making games with your children! :)

Tiny World of Bees by tripleVisionGames 2012-04-25T18:01:00

Haha, this game had me hooked for much longer then I'd care to admit. I really like the art and the extremely simple but yet effective gameplay mechanics. Turned into a "spam click on the closest bunch of flowers"-game as soon as I got the hang of the idea tho.

Immunity by umwgmc 2012-04-27T19:56:00

Aww. I think I've worn out my spam-clicky finger now. Didn't realize the "infinitemode.txt" caption for the last level until I had played for quite a while. :(

Seriously a great game. Without a doubt among the best I've played so far. It is polished and it has great gameplay, even tho the idea is simple enough. The background music is nice as well. Could have used some in-game sound effects as well tho.

Also, it lagged quite a lot when many of these spider-like thingies spawned.

Tiny Journey by Evil Sandwich Studios 2012-04-25T22:04:00

Very good looking game. I happen to be extremely bad at this type of game so I didn't get very far, but it sure is a cool game and it sets the mood very nicely.

Pluto's Revenge by Hattered 2012-04-27T20:06:00

Really cool idea. Game ran perfectly and physics felt really good. That is until I got too big, then it all lagged into oblivion and then my "assembly" just started spinning out of control. It was really fun to play around with tho. Nice work!

Are You Okay? by Bread 2012-04-28T10:28:00

I also wish it'd be longer. It is still a cool and innovative idea tho and the part that is there is actually fun. Nice work.

Elevation by MegabyteTND 2012-04-25T19:43:00

Haha, damn this lack of arms which causes my every wrong step to result in a horrible death. The game looks great and is fun to play. It is also very colorful and charming.

Personally I think that the introduction of the core gameplay elements are spread out over too many levels tho. I'd rather see more complex levels earlier.

The game runs perfectly fine on Linux using Wine.

tiny hostile world by Akunate 2012-05-04T23:43:00

I agree with the other comments and I realise that there may not have been enough time to do everything you had in mind. The game has potential to be fun, but it needs some ramping up of the difficulty and some kind of score at least.

Finding Yourself by Maple 2012-05-05T13:42:00

As stated many times already, this is a really difficult game. I couldn't get all that far. The levels really require you to stop and think for a while tho, which is good. Somehow I do like the visuals tho. Some of the controls seem a bit odd, but I suppose that at least one of the several options will always be acceptable. It is really nice that you managed to add a Load game feature as well btw. Really nice progress for such a short development time.

BamSquitch by Valeour 2012-04-25T18:35:00

Cool game! The puzzles required some fast thinking because of the timer which brought up the pace in a nice way. My biggest complaint is that the tiles which you can only pass while being a certain size cost me two lives to figure out. Maybe the first encounter with them could somehow show the player how they work in a clearer way. Still, I didn't have to restart due to losing all my lives so it was not a really big deal for me :)

Interstellar Moai Ranger by Shifty 2012-04-26T22:02:00

The graphics are really impressive. I just love the look of the game. The fact that I'm extremely bad at it doesn't change the fact that this is a great game. Good work!

I was running it through Wine on Linux tho, and for some reason it locked up before I got all that far. It was however running very well up until that point.

Tiny Ranger by Monkey Armada 2012-04-24T21:53:00

Nice game. The linux build crashed during initialization on my machine, but the windows one works fine through Wine.

It also appears that all numbers (health and stuff) is written using scientific notation. My health is "1.0000000000E+02". Made me lol. :)

Good looking, nice sounds, interesting idea. Nice work!

Planet Waves by attagcatc 2012-05-13T09:45:00

I like the idea. Using the wavelength to control the launching of planets was a quite original idea. I kind of feel that it is too difficult tho since there is so much depending on random chance and so little depending on the player's actions. The sound when changing wavelength also got a bit annoying quite fast. The game runs just fine on Linux using Wine. Nice work!

Pull by maloki 2012-05-13T09:31:00

That was great! Simple gameplay yet with some very tricky puzzles. I do think that some of the levels weren't really in order of difficulty tho, but then again that might just be me.

The Moth and The Menace by vandriver 2012-04-25T18:14:00

Nice game! Unfortunately I was too bad to make it through the entire thing, but I am really impressed with the amount of content. I like the bosses and for the most part the game mechanics. The kid in the background freaks me out tho. Nice take on the theme.

The game works perfectly fine through Wine on Linux btw.

LittleEarth's Last Stand by jmf 2012-05-05T14:42:00

This was a fun little game. I love the addition of the kittens to what would otherwise be a bit too minimalistic. Good work!

Scorched Earth by Jungorend 2012-04-27T20:34:00

Nicely done. When testing by myself it is kind of annoying having to move the cursor between the teams every turn. The idea is good tho and the gameplay as well.

The game works perfectly fine on Linux if you just rename Theme.wav to theme.wav (lowercase T), change the backwards slashes (\) to forward slashes (/) in the manifest file and include the Linux natives in the zip file. (Tho you have to set java.library.path manually on the command line. I don't know if you need to do that on Windows as well.)

Magniverse by Erifdex 2012-04-25T19:32:00

I really liked the UI in this game, but it's a shame that it wasn't properly explained anywhere. As far as i could figure it out the white dot points towards your home planet, the red dots are enemies and the color of the little character thingy represents its speed. So the player actually controls the UI in some sense, really clever!

The controls were the worst enemy of this game. The idea behind the mouse clicking has some merit, but picking up resources was kind of a hassle without direct control.

Conquest of the Cyber-Ovine by Nanolotl 2012-04-28T11:52:00

While I'd say the graphics are very simplistic the actual game play actually feels rather nice and polished. I like the available items, the system for leveling up items etc. I also like the levels and the level progression.

What I don't quite like is the fact that you loose experience and levels when you die. When I made it to the third level I died a couple of times and then I was just too low level to even stand a chance against the enemies there, and there wasn't any way to get back to easier enemies either. It'd be better if you just lost the XP that you've collected on your current level or something like that.

The combat was also a bit annoying since you had to make sure to be right in front of enemies to hit them, while they could hit you from an angle. I'd also say that their "invulnerability-after-getting-hurt" time was a bit too long.

Overall, very impressive accomplishment for 48 hours.

Amnesic prince by qosmos 2012-04-25T12:58:00

I like the fact that the gravitational field is different for different planets and it affects your jump. Items kept disappearing from the inventory tho, so I couldn't progress much. Also the game wouldn't restart after I jumped off the second planet - I had to refresh my browser. Other than that I like the graphic style and the overall feel of the game.

Stomp-A-Thump by OnionBlaze 2012-04-25T19:21:00

Some castles were impossibly close to forests which made me lose a bunch, and then when I started skipping some I still passed a level. A bit confusing, but congrats on making your first Ludum Dare game! :)

Bottlecolonies by tcstyle 2012-05-05T11:28:00

Cool game, truly lovely graphics. The background music was nice as well. The gameplay was very cool as well, even tho I didn't really get the point of the park thingies.

Most of us live in a tiny world by jeffz 2012-04-27T20:46:00

Didn't really feel like a game since you couldn't actually control anything. It is kind of an innovative idea tho and I'd say it fits the theme well enough. It runs great and it conveys the message quite nicely. It's cool that you got something to submit in just 6 hours, and during THOSE hours even. Good job!

Athletic's Foot by neosam 2012-05-04T22:35:00

Oh noes! I need more cheese! Hehe, this was certainly a very *interesting* interpretation of the theme. It took me a handful of tries to figure out a way to survive more then just a few seconds, but when I got the hang of it I found myself enjoying the challenge. It could have used some more options tho in order to make it last longer.

Cleansing of the tiny worlds by Scrapworks 2012-04-27T21:07:00

Haha, nice game. I like the language used in the tutorial. Made it not just bearable to read through the tutorial, but even slightly funny. The gameplay is cool and the graphical style of the game is very interesting, in a good way of course. Combat could have been a bit more polished tho. Great work!

Nano Spin by bitbof 2012-04-27T17:56:00

Really, really, really liked this game, definitely in my top three right now! The gameplay mechanic is very simple, but in a "why didn't I think of that?" kind of way. It is put to good use in the different levels which have a large variation of puzzles. I would just have changed the turning speed a bit for those situations when more than 45 degree accuracy is needed. Right now it is kind of hard to get the right positioning sometimes. I really liked the way the pivot switched from head to head, felt very natural to control.

A very good example of coming up with a great core mechanic and polishing the hell out of it, great job!

Dreamworld by JoeCool17 2012-05-04T21:51:00

I like the idea of switching between two worlds like that. The graphics also look nice and the game runs fine on Linux. Kind of an odd (but interesting) resolution/screen size tho. It's a shame that it isn't more complete.

Smallworld Survival by Norgg 2012-04-28T10:38:00

Very innovative idea. I like it. It was fun, especially to mess with them and see them running back and forth across the map trying to get the food that I placed there. Tho I think that I've worn out my spam-clicky-finger again. :(

Searching for Heaven by demonpants 2012-04-25T00:06:00

Good idea. Like the take on karma. Not sure what to think about having suicide as a main game element but hey... Either way nice graphics and sound. Got stuck on the 4th level (i think it was) when i get turned into a gorilla for the first time. Walked off the to the wrong side and got stuck. Controls are a bit confusing when you are upside down. Not sure how you would do it better tho.

Pale Blue Dot by KevinWorkman 2012-05-04T22:11:00

I can't seem to load the game. The webstart link appears to be dead and the applet version gives me the following error (on Linux):

ExitException[ 3]java.io.FileNotFoundException: JNLP file error: http://s3.staticvoidgames.com/games/PaleBlueDot/applet.jnlp. Please make sure the file exists and check if "codebase" and "href" in the JNLP file are correct.
at sun.plugin2.applet.JNLP2Manager.loadJarFiles(Unknown Source)
at sun.plugin2.applet.Plugin2Manager$AppletExecutionRunnable.run(Unknown Source)
at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:722)

Indeed it would appear that the "s3.staticvoidgames.com" domain itself cannot be resolved. A DNS query for the domain confirms what @Kvisle mentioned earlier, that the DNS entry for the domain is wrong. It should indeed NOT contain the "http://" part. The "http://" part is just a protocol specifier and has no place at all in the DNS entry. I recommend that you look into that.

Pale Blue Dot by KevinWorkman 2012-05-05T09:37:00

Hum, I'm not sure about what you changed, but I've tried querying several DNS servers for your domain, and it still seems to have the "http://" part in the DNS entry. It could just be a caching issue tho, so I'll could try again a little later, but I doubt that waiting will solve the problem. Here is the current result of a DNS query:
http://pastebin.com/n1wuC8z8

Additionally, I can now not load your main website at all. (The website itself worked fine yesterday.) I get the following response:
HTTP/1.1 503 Service Unavailable: Back-end server is at capacity

The DNS issues are all fixed now, so the game works perfectly on Linux as well (and probably on other platforms if anyone else had any problems before).

I really like the idea and the game mechanics. It feels sort of like a more personal take on Solar 2. I wouldn't mind some keyboard controls tho. I keep accidentally clicking outside the screen making the window end up behind something whenever I panic and try to steer away from something at high speeds. It would also be nice if you could zoom out, at least when at high speeds so that you can see stuff coming and react to them before it is too late.

The voice in the background was a very nice touch as well. Great work!

Merl's Hicventures by Suds 2012-04-25T06:54:00

Game worked well for me on Linux. It looks good and the dialog options are sort of funny lol. The maps are large, but they seem repetitive. Especially inside the "buildings". It is often just the same section on top of each others over and over again. I couldn't really figure out where to go either. I did manage to kill some big guy tho. Was fun. Good work!

Overpopulous by Make A Game 2012-05-04T22:21:00

192 800. That was actually lots of fun! I did end up circling some targets way too many times before I managed to hit them tho, but I guess that is mainly because I suck lol. I like the gameplay, the scoring system, the graphics, the intro, the sound and the humor. It all makes a brilliant combination of awesomeness. Great work!

Mirror Rays by keenblaze 2012-04-26T09:22:00

Great game! Solid controls in my opinion! I really liked the graphical style and the gameplay mechanics. I played through the whole game and it did have some pretty tricky spots. Too bad it didn't have any sound, I think it would have completed the game and helped a lot with the mood and setting. One thing that put me off was the "curse" words on the first level where you use mirrors. Not that I don't curse haha, but I just thought that with the player being a gentleman with a top hat set in a whimsical world it just didn't add anything to the feel of the game, and perhaps it worked a bit against it. Other than that it's a solid game with interesting and challenging gameplay!

Children of DiscoDroid by Per 2012-05-05T10:18:00

The idea is great! With some polish this could be a great game. Dance on!

Microcosm by maxman43 2012-05-13T08:54:00

That was a bit tricky. I ended up just trying all possible combinations of clicking in different places before I could progress. It is a nice idea and it did keep me playing through the entire game. I didn't really make sense of some of the things you had to do. It's amazing that you got this working in such short time tho. Nice work!

Submarine: This Ain't Your Momma's Bathtub, Tovarisch by kibertoad 2012-04-27T11:08:00

Hum. I take it that if my screen is filled with flame icons that probably means that I'm not well suited to man a soviet submarine? :)

Really good and polished game. The game play was really good. I don't really see the point of the dialogs that show up randomly throughout the game tho. The graphics were good as well, but the game play is where this game really excels. Great work!

It may however be a good idea to maintain consistency and a convention for file names and file references to make it more likely work out of the box on Linux.

Invasion of the Planet Snatchers! by icefox 2012-04-25T20:55:00

Haha really silly game, but attaching a bunch of planets to your home planet, making them all spin out of control and going on a killing spree (with a sword!) on you captured planets is a dizzying yet kind of awesome experience. A fine example of an incomplete prototype which is made fun due to its brokenness :)

Escape by chrismcr 2012-04-26T21:20:00

Wow, what was actually a really good, but short, game. Reminded me of a game I used to play a while back. The game works flawlessly on Linux under Wine.

Rocket Boat by RHY3756547 2012-04-25T19:44:00

Awesome graphics and sound!

CursorVsMan by monkeymad2 2012-05-13T10:30:00

Lol. This was quite a cool idea. It'd be awesome to incorporate this into someone's text editor. I like it, but I'm not sure how well I think it fits the theme. Good work!

Good Cell, Bad Cell by KhaoTom 2012-05-07T21:59:00

Overall I enjoyed the game. No idea how to tell good from bad cells. And the projectiles were a bit slow for my taste.

Tiny World Defense by Whoosy 2012-05-07T21:52:00

Having the same issue as the first comment. My guess would be that you don't take the frame time into account. I press start and less then a second later "Game Over!".

For (g>v) by N427 2012-05-05T10:34:00

The game looks exceptionally polished for a 48h game. I really like the graphics/art style. The controls are a bit awkward tho. The game also runs just fine on Linux using Wine. Great work!

Backyard Pirates by bompo 2012-04-27T16:58:00

Fun and good looking game! It's a shame that it doesn't have any music, a hectic, piratey soundtrack (the intro of Gangplank Galleon from Donkey Kong Country comes to mind) would have suited it perfectly.

Celia by Finn Stokes 2012-04-28T10:17:00

This game is really LÖVEly. :)

The positioning of the camera didn't work well at all on a widescreen resolution for me (on Linux) and especially not with a multi-monitor setup (the game got stretched out over both monitors, which in my case wasn't the best idea). The screen was kind of offset to the right so that the character was always at the edge of the screen. Setting a regular 4:3 resolution made it run perfectly tho.

There was also some camera jerkiness when resizing event occurred.

Other then that the game was just brilliant. Even tho I got stuck on the last level for a while it was fun enough to keep me playing until I finished it. The graphics are just amazing and the game play mechanics are great. Maps were also well designed, even tho it would be great with more of them! :)

Stargazer by tSwitch 2012-04-27T18:07:00

I liked the small story bits in between levels, unfortunately the "ending" was kind of a let down.

Snowglobe by olav_st 2012-05-13T11:03:00

I find that the Linux (32 bit) version works just fine, even tho it is spamming lots in the terminal while playing. I think that this is a cool idea for a game, but the shaking mostly makes the movement feel jerky and sometimes you can slide quite far into the world geometry. Nice work tho, impressive progress in 48 hours.

Amoebae by scgrn 2012-05-13T09:56:00

I really like the looks of the game. It has this interesting sort of ambient style somehow, which is cool. The game play mechanics were simple but felt polished. It's nice that you added an options menu for all those essential options.

I couldn't get the Linux download to work tho. As soon as I started the game I got a segmentation fault. The windows version worked just fine through Wine tho. I'm using LOVE 0.8.0 (Rubber Piggy).

Cells by kelp 2012-04-26T21:10:00

Tried running the Linux version, but that depended on libssl.so.1.0.0 which wasn't in my distro's repositories and I was too lazy to go find it. It was easier to just clone the source code repository of the game and running it directly. That worked just fine.

Interesting idea. It sure had me hooked for a while. I had no chance of winning once both teams had a full 100 cells. They just kept re-splitting faster then I could do anything. Nicely done tho1

subAtomic by MurrayL 2012-04-25T21:00:00

Haha, brilliant game. Most humorous game I've played today by far. I kindof feel that I might have picked the wrong ending tho. I'm tempted to do it all over again to try another one. Gotta lover the humor tho. Great work!

Prince of Leaves by evilseanbot 2012-04-25T21:41:00

Hehe, I really like the song in the background and the great graphics. Also, the game works just fine on Linux if you just add the Linux natives for LWJGL to the jar-file and change the name of OutofLeaves.wav to OutOfLeaves.wav (capital O). The same should work for Mac. Great work!

Tiny Artillery by blubberquark 2012-04-28T12:24:00

Nice idea. The concept is very good and is lots of fun. The physics could use some tuning to feel more natural tho. When I tried it one of the players got stuck in mid-air and just flipped around back and forth. Also wouldn't mind some more graphical detail, but for a 48 hour game it is very impressive. The Linux release works perfectly as well.

Oomple by lurkingshadow 2012-04-28T11:26:00

Pretty innovative idea and the game runs flawlessly. It does get a bit repetitive after a few worlds tho. It would be nice to have something more to control then just the capture button. Congratulations on making your first game!

The Lair by Lilleman 2012-05-05T10:24:00

Nice one. As others have already mentioned the gravity feels way too floaty. I also think that it takes too long before you can initialize a new jump after landing. It feels kind of strange.

I like the level design and the look of the game, but I'm not a fan of the idea that the doors that open when you pick up certain keys are "somewhere else" so you have to backtrack the entire level to find them.

At first I didn't realize that you could jump on enemies to kill them, and even when I figured that out it took another few playthroughs before I realized that you can "jump out of death". I'm not sure if this is intentional or if it is a bug, but after having died, if you jump fast/often enough, you get revived and can keep playing.

Great work overall!

Tiny World - A Giants Tale by DalsGames 2012-05-05T10:08:00

Haha, this is brilliant. I love how the game manages to make you feel bad for accidentally crushing all of your tiny friends. The level design was pretty clever at some places as well, placing a lot of innocent people under a collectable so that you really have to try to control your landing.

The game runs perfectly fine on Linux using Wine. The only problem I had was that the jump mechanic and collision handling seemed kindof buggy. Some times I'd get stuck to walls, some times I tried to jump but nothing happened and some times I tried to jump and it didn't jump as high as it usually does, while it worked fine a few attempts later.

Having those tiny buggers try to kill you was also a nice twist. It could have used some kind of visual indication when you die tho. I died just as I was about to move to the next level, but since it doesn't tell you, it just looked like you had cheated by placing two identical level in succession.

Great work!

Tiny's World by tacograveyard 2012-04-27T17:23:00

Whoa! The first game which made me smile all the way through, the singing was great! I tiptoed through the tulips for a good few minutes before going around town, and it was a feelgood experience all the way :D

I can also add that I had little lag in firefox 11, nothing gamebreaking at all. Good job!

Moonmen: Journey to the Giant World by Daisuke909 2012-05-13T10:45:00

Nice work! It sort of feels like a complete game, with the intro story and the ending etc, which is very impressive for a 48h game. The game ran very smoothly. There were some quirks with the controls, but overall it worked just fine. The graphics and the sound was also good. It was kind of difficult to come up with a good strategy for the red boss tho since it was so hard to avoid him. The fire and smoke effects during the ending really stood out in a cool way.

Manifest Destiny by lapogo 2012-04-25T21:11:00

Simplistic but efficient. I liked the effect when killing enemies and the camera shake when getting hit. It was kind of difficult to make it far tho since you loose health if the enemies even get close to you from an angle. The controls were good and it works perfectly on Linux using Wine.

Stranded by The Evil Cult 2012-04-24T22:08:00

Really nice little game. I really like the charming old-school graphics and the fog of war effect when indoors. I also must congratulate you for making a complete game with a story and an ending and everything. Nice work.

Only disappointment is that there weren't any treasure in any of the ~1 million pots I destroyed. Isn't that an unwritten law of game design - that pots must contain treasures?

I don't get why you say "Windows (JNLP Installer)" tho. It ran just fine for me on Linux for example.

Earth Evacuation by Pitƶik4 2012-05-13T11:25:00

Haha. "I'm done!", "You win!!" This was really entertaining. I like the idea and the implementation. With some more polishing and some more visual feedback within the game I think this could be really entertaining to play. After you figure out how all the resources are actually produced it isn't really much of a challenge anymore tho. Anyhow, for a 48h game, this is quite brilliant.

Tiny World God by Lawrence Esswood 2012-04-25T21:22:00

Nice game. Who would have guessed that playing God would be that entertaining? The UI was a bit laggy for me tho and I'm not sure why. But it is a very nice concept. I'd love to play a version of this with more stuff in it.

LD25 — You are the Villain

The life of a Boss by Jiddo 2012-12-20T21:21:00

Hmm, that's too bad. Which version did you run?

Woodcut Ted by rujo 2012-12-18T11:08:00

Felt far too good to cut down trees for being such a mindless task. A well realized game for the short amount of dev time, wish the menu music looped and continued playing during the game.

Trina of The Depths by Christina Antoinette Neofotistou 2012-12-27T17:17:00

That's a cute little game. I'm not sure if I actually managed to find all the areas tho. Still, I feel that it is missing an actual challenge. I don't see the reason to kill the other creatures. They aren't being aggressive towards you and there doesn't appear to be any reward in killing them.

Still, the graphics are awesome, the sound is good and the controls work quite well. The upgrades are certainly interesting. Great work!

Abrupt Salvation by NostraDamon 2012-12-27T17:42:00

Annoyingly slow download speed from the "cubyworld.free.fr" host. It's great of you to provide a Linux version as well btw. Kudos! Unfortunately the game seems to crash for me as soon as an explosion goes off. It just says "Aborted (core dumped)". The Windows version runs fine in Wine tho.

Really cool physics based game. The graphics look amazing and the sound is truly great. Controls and movement is a tad bit awkward when trying to traverse uneven terrain, but it's not too bad.

There is actually a whole lot of content in this game. More than I would have guessed. I'm amazed by how you managed to make it feel like a complete game. It certainly feels much more complete than most other entries I've seen so far.

Awesome work!

Evil Dudes Need Evil Towers by jujule 2012-12-19T09:40:00

Fun little game that I could see myself returning to if the screen was a bit larger. It's very hard to see what's going on at times, and it's a bit unclear where the green monster hitbox thingy is. I really had fun with this though, nice concept!

Klause Pringle: Eco Terrorist by TehSkull 2012-12-24T23:51:00

Haha, really cool idea. I loved the art style and the comments for each action.

The second level was a bit unintuitive tho. I couldn't really figure out how to deal with all the different items just by the beginning. Once I picked one I couldn't get rid of it, even after using it. Maybe I just missed something tho. :(

Oh, and I found the goat! (Without having read the hint!)

Great work!

PsyGoat by SecondDimension 2012-12-18T17:56:00

A bit stale controls, but I sure liked the powerups and shooting with telekinetic guns! One small annoyance was that the selected powerup defaulted to laser eyes in each new room. I really liked the music!

MidBoss by Eniko 2012-12-23T09:49:00

Truly a great game. I don't think I've ever played a LD entry for this long. The Sorcerers were way too powerful tho. I would really like being able to save/respawn as well, so that you don't have to start from scratch whenever you run into one. I tried running away from enemies a few times but that was quite futile. :(

Loan Shark by Skiddings 2012-12-24T00:01:00

I like the idea and the excessively elaborate back story. It really got me in the mood of giving out high interest loans. :)

Both the controls and the input was a bit awkward. Graphically it was pretty nice tho. The shark look was really cool.

The first "sucker" was a bit hard to get to accept a loan, but the rest of them seemed to basically accept whatever I suggested.

Great work!

Asteroids Backwards by CurtisOfTheDark 2012-12-18T18:25:00

The seeds of a fun game are there but are far from blooming. I didn't hear any music?

ECHO CHAMBER by Loren 2012-12-19T09:53:00

Very interesting concept, moody and well excecuted, though it would be nice if the gameplay evolved a little between rounds. It could become really cool given some additional work after the compo!

Princess Sheltering by Clodial 2012-12-23T10:07:00

Hey! Those level three heroes are breaking the speed limit! That's cheating! :(

Nice game tho. I certainly did not expect the addition of the vines introduced in the second level. Neat idea.

Gameplay and controls were very good. Graphics was nice, and cudos for the goat cloud. :)

Managing Morder: The ground is always blacker on the other side. by Bensonance 2012-12-18T18:08:00

Really cool graphics and music, but the font made things hard to read and follow. The font did however stick very well to the theme of the game and the theming was excellently done in general!

Robin Banks by BlockBrains 2012-12-27T16:58:00

Hehe. I managed to get to $53 after a couple of tries. It was a little bit hard to avoid the things people throw at you, and without more health you have to be real careful.

Either way, the game looks awesome and the background music and sound effects are a nice addition. The gameplay is simple but feels quite polished and most importantly, it is fun.

I really like the idea. I also quite appreciate the humor, both the inherent humor of the idea itself, but also in the speech bubbles from the character and such. Great job!

Hairy Scary Wolf by Grug 2012-12-23T10:21:00

Pretty cool game. I managed to get a score of 208.

The collisions were a bit soft which felt strange. I could sometimes swear that I just accidentally ran over an obstacle. Also, once I had finished a round I couldn't start a new one because it would end immediately with the same score as I got last round. Had to restart the game.

The witches and their buffs were a nice additional touch.

Ninox the Nightbringer by Dining Philosopher 2012-12-20T21:02:00

Nice puzzely kind of game. A simple but fun and engaging concept. I didn't like the all-black levels so much tho. They were mostly frustrating.

Mortal Fear by TDRGames 2012-12-23T10:44:00

Nice idea, but the controls are very annoying. The fact that it's just a huge website that you have to scroll around on is inconvenient to say the least. Also, seems like if you just leave your guys on a safe tile for a while and then come back to the game everyone will have died somehow and there will essentially only be cops left.

The graphics was quite nice tho! A polished version of the game could be interesting to try.

The Launch by DTG 2012-12-19T10:51:00

Awesome graphics! I liked the scientist patting his own shoulder in the missile room, nice touch!

VampVille by eraldo 2012-12-23T11:15:00

I get the feeling that it was a good underlying idea, but the final product lacked some essentials.

I don't like the fact that you start the game without being able to see ANYTHING and that you had no idea what to do or where you need to go. I repeatedly ended up wandering around aimlessly until I died without having made any progress.

Once I managed to find two torches and some tile which seemed to reveal my surroundings, but I still had no idea what to do from there.

Finally I couldn't really figure out which tiles represented what. At first I thought that the dark gray ones were some kind of wall or something, but it turned out you can freely walk over them, so now I'm thinking they are a path? Red ones can not be traversed however. What are they?

Also, the menu is sort of half-way outside the screen on my machine. Perhaps due to resolution or my second monitor.

Running the game wasn't a problem tho. :)

Who stole christmas by StMatn 2012-12-20T21:20:00

Really cool. I like the idea and the execution. Crossplatform support is also a plus! Graphically is looked really good as well. Tho, what's up with all the other non-present items that you can take? Do they actually serve any purpose?

Puny Heroes by Blooperly 2012-12-23T12:08:00

The idea is certainly cool. In fact, it is somewhat similar to our own!

There is a bit too much waiting involved tho. The ability to place multiple mobs in a room doesn't really feel intuitive. I would rather be able to upgrade the ones I placed there before. Also, the path traversed by the hero in the maze makes no sense. It shouldn't be random in the sense that he can walk back a way that he has already been on. It'd be better to pick a reasonably short route to the boss.

Graphics look really good tho and the controls are intuitive, for the most part.

Busdriver's paradise by lucas-b.eyer.be 2012-12-23T11:33:00

Cool and and entertaining idea, but it starts to feel pointless a bit too quick.

I would have much preferred if the controls were inversed while reversing, as you would expect from this type of game. Also, if the bus could like slide and stuff like that then the fun factor would increase a LOT.

You should consider adding buildings and just having the grannys, cats and goats on the sidewalks instead of randomly all over the place. That'd add a little bit more of a driving challenge.

There should be some sort of end to the game, even if it's just a countdown timer, or loosing a life every time you run over a cat. That would make the score main a lot more.

Background music and sound effects were good tho, and the overall graphics was nice.

Lord Evil's Daring Escape by Cryovat 2012-12-23T11:47:00

Yeah, that's a very short game, but the graphics are just amazing. I just love the art style. Using Z to jump and accept stuff instead of for example Space was a bit awkward tho. Also, the jumping physics were a bit too slow.

The game seems to require Löve 0.8.0 to run. The version I originally had (2.7.2) gave me an error saying:
[string "fw/graphics/TileMap.lua"]:37: attempt to call method 'bind' (a nil value)

Also, the screen was very small. I would have preferred if it was upscaled by a factor 2.

Great work!

The Enforcer by LevelUp 2012-12-23T12:31:00

Hehe, pretty funny gameplay. Tho is it just me or doesn't Space+Down do anything? :S

This looks really good for being a 3D entry and the sounds were really nice as well. Controls were fine too even tho the cooldown between the actions you could do was kind of awkward at times.

I really missed an end screen or something tho. Just throwing you back to the main menu is kind of boring, especially since there is a scoring system and stuff. That should be presented on a screen when you finish the game.

One sad thing is that it was too easy (and too tempting) to just play through it too quickly to read the various news messages and target description messages before just going berserk.

Mother F****r Nature by valeroth 2012-12-24T00:24:00

Really cool idea. I never saved up enough to build a volcano before it was over tho. Could have been just a little longer.

In-game graphics were really good and cudos for getting borderline nudity into your LD entry!

Good sound effects. The difficulty level was really appropriate as well.

Given the content of the game I don't really see why it needs to be a whooping 85 MB download tho.

JASPrincess by dreamwalker 2012-12-23T12:19:00

Cool game. The controls were good and the movement was really smooth. Much moreso then I've seen in most other games. The "alarm" was a cool and interesting addition to the game.

There were a bunch of places where it looks like you should be able to walk through, but you couldn't. The random and stronghold levels were kind of harsh as well, sometimes with a handful of guards spawning in asskicking range of you.

Overall, great controls, nice sound effects, decent graphics and entertaining gameplay.

Robogoat by mutuwarejam 2012-12-19T10:35:00

Got the carrot on my third try!

The Little White Rabbit and the Goat Goatee by Cabral 2012-12-20T20:44:00

Nicely done. A cool game with an unexpected and interesting story. It is kind of short tho, and as previously mentioned it gets crowded real fast.

Noble Weapon by Meep 2012-12-19T11:28:00

Really fun game! Although I wish there was some sort of higher score reward for cashing in several princesses at once to make a combo worthwhile. Also, the ratio of number of princesses:warriors spawned becomes too small after a while, the bulk of the score comes from the early parts of the game and staying alive when it becomes hard doesn't give that much reward. Maybe killed enemies could give small amounts of score points as well to compensate for this. But overall it was a really solid entry!

Snap by fishbrain 2012-12-18T18:21:00

This game made me feel bad for doing what I did. I guess that's pretty high praise and it hit the theme perfectly..

Critterrific by joekinley 2012-12-27T16:18:00

Really nice and accessible gameplay. The graphics looked really good and fit the game well. Audio was good as well. My only gripe with it is that it's too easy to accidentally get killed from walking into a critter. Even just some sort of visual effect or animation when you are being hurt by a critter would be very helpful.

Mad Goat by Ret44 2012-12-24T00:35:00

It's a really nice entry, but I think that moving and jumping is way too fast. It also seems to be MUCH easier to beat if you just keep on mindlessly jumping up and down while shooting. That'll make the AI do the same (and in fact jump into your bullets a lot), and they won't actually shoot and/or hit as much. That is kind of a boring way to play, but unfortunately it works.

The graphics are good and I really liked the intro/splash screen. Music is cool and the sound effects are decent.

Controls are good, but as mentioned movement and jumping feels way too fast.

I'm not sure what's up with the boss thing at the end. I just got to it and insta-won. Maybe my bullets had been hitting him for a long time before I could see him on screen?

Oh well, great work!

Unwavering Evil by DrSuperSocks 2012-12-19T14:52:00

Cool little brawler, though the plane explosions gave me out of memory errors from the gpu. At least I think the planes were supposed to explode, can't know for sure since the game became unplayable when it happened. Must have been really cool explosions though so it's not necessarily a bad thing :)

Universe's Next Top Villain by Floko 2012-12-19T11:53:00

Loved the music and the humor!

Welcome to my dungeon by Scrapworks 2012-12-18T18:17:00

Nice game with influences of the binding of isaac. Two main downsides were that the arrows are rendered behind dead bodies which makes them hard to dodge, and I died simply because I got stuck. Otherwise it was fun while it lasted and the powerups started stacking up!

The Hunt by marudziik 2012-12-27T16:24:00

Visually the game looks nice, and the sound effects also work well. Unfortunately the game doesn't feel all that responsive for me which makes it really difficult to play. On top of that the hit detection feels kind of weird. Things that I consider to be hits count as misses instead.

It's really good that the game has simple and well defined rules tho. Good work!

Witching Game by kibertoad 2012-12-24T23:38:00

Really cool idea and great narration. Cudos for the great crossplatform support as well! The download seems a bit big tho.

Graphics were really good and so was audio, even if it kept repeating the last page of the introduction a long time into the game for me.

Gameplay wasn't intuitive enough tho. I managed to find enough goats, but by then there was basically no people or animals left to use the plague on. It said something in the tip to use it at the water supply or something, so I ended up spending my remaining days trying to find a well or something, but I couldn't. :(

Also, movement costing time felt a bit odd in this type of game, especially with a map this big.

Out of curiosity, how did you make a native Windows build that didn't require a JRE? That could be an interesting alternative to the Launch4J that I used.

Witching Game by kibertoad 2012-12-25T11:33:00

Thanks a lot for the link to Excelsior JET. It looks very interesting. I just got myself a license. Gonna try it out! :)

My Kingdom for a Line Block by chas 2012-12-27T16:33:00

Very interesting idea indeed. I didn't really have anyone to play with, but just playing it by myself, trying to cope with the side switches and such was interesting enough.

Visually the game looks quite polished and nice. Controls are good. I can't say that I fully get how anyone is a "villain" in a game like this tho. It's more like you are each other's enemies/opponents.

Great work either way!

The Evil Space-Hippie by PAFdelirium 2012-12-18T17:44:00

The graphics are nice and trippy, but the intro sequence is a tad too long for replays.

LD26 — Minimalism

Iceberg Explorer by tinyworlds 2013-05-01T13:32:00

Cool game. Looked pretty good. I have three monitors and the game magically extended the world onto all of them quite well. I think that some things might have been slightly messed up because of that, but it looked quite cool. :)

I couldn't find that many things. I don't know how many things even existed for me to find. There seemed to be a huge clusters of indicators on the minimap which I couldn't find anything at. I tried looking for some sort of cave entrance, but found nothing. I guess I must have been missing something.

Still, the game ran perfectly well for me on Linux (32 bit). No issues whatsoever. Kudos for providing a dedicated Linux build.

The download site was HORRIBLE tho. It took forever to download the game. :(

Three Tiles by PaidGEEK 2013-05-02T21:14:00

Really interesting idea. It was challenging and at the same time there were numerous techniques for you to discover in order to stand a better chance. I also appreciated the really huge amount of levels. Not many LD entries can do that!

Everything about this game felt thought through and polished. The menu was nice, the gameplay worked well, the controls were good and the levels were well designed and varied.

It's also great to see another fellow Java (and Slick2D) game out there.

Thanks for providing a convenient and self contained runnable JAR file! That's the way to go! :)

Great work!

Fight The Minimalism by Cyboot 2013-05-01T20:53:00

This is a really fun game! Some of the levels were tricky and I really enjoyed it. I loved the music as well.

Ball & Cup by ohsqueezy 2013-05-01T14:01:00

This game is rather interesting for being so simple. It is kind of difficult to predict tho since the ball behaves quite differently (and randomly) on each new level. I couldn't figure out any good way of applying skill to the game except for just playing it over and over again, which eventually got boring.

What's with the seemingly random fruit names "awarded" to you after each level btw?

I ran this on Linux, and it worked well. The only weird thing is that it displayed a copy of the game on each of my three monitors. Was this intentional?

Great work!

Boxy by matter123 2013-05-02T21:05:00

I loved the small story and how nonsensical it actually was to have it for this gameplay. Made me chuckle :) The controls were far too twitchy and the timer far too long though, thus the game was going too fast and too slowly at the same in an unsatisfying manner.

Jetpack Jester by rustybroomhandle 2013-05-01T13:47:00

It's really cool to see a game with that many people involved. I like the art style and the idea of making a game using assets built in Minecraft. The gameplay was cool and felt unique.

I think that the game would have been more interesting if you got to re-use all the toys from the previous rounds. I spent all my money on the first round, and couldn't fit them together well, so I just ended up with a fraction of the money for the next round. It just went downhill from there. :(

I ran the game on Linux, and it worked perfectly. Kudos for including a Linux build and for using a decent file host.

Skeletal: A Barebones RPG by Galan 2013-05-01T21:02:00

That game is waaaaaaay too huge at ~98MB for what it is. But it is insanely funny nonetheless :D I actually felt like playing an old school rpg. I maxed out pretty fast, which wasn't after that much grinding, but I like that I have the option to continue doing so. Very cool game. Only complaint was the sound - if you strip the game of everything, don't leave one sfxr generated blip in there.

Better Triangle by Jiddo 2013-04-30T20:51:00

Thanks for the comments! We're glad you enjoyed it!

We were actually just three main coders. The last one is sort of an "apprentice" coder who just helped with some tweaking and bugfixing.

Between the three of us we basically just split up the different big tasks. One implemented the boss composition of small parts, one the weapon systems, one the player controls, one the camera handling, one the scrap part stuff etc. We already had sort of a framework ready that we've developed over the past few game jams. :)

Better Triangle by Jiddo 2013-05-01T15:48:00

Again, thanks for all the comments! :)

The different parts vary in toughness. The solid steel ones will be able to take much more of a beating than the ones with windows and stuff and the restaurant modules.

You start with only the zap attack, but once you have taken some of the enemy's weapon modules they will also fire whenever they are facing in the same direction as your mouse pointer/zap attack.

_M_ by GranaDa 2013-05-01T13:44:00

A bit hard to understand whether you're doing well or not. Very nice overall presentation.

Fading by Blizzil 2013-05-01T14:26:00

I really liked the graphics for all the objects in the game. The level itself was a bit boring, but I guess it fits well into the theme since it still clearly conveys everything it needs to.

The gameplay was simple, but it worked really well. The only complaint I have is that the jumping "physics" felt a bit iffy. I'd rather see faster jumps with more gravity and adding some sort of momentum rather than just immediately stopping in mid-air if you let go of the direction keys.

The game worked well on Linux, but as mentioned before, it'd be much more convenient for users if you just embed it in a webpage.

Also, the alarm sound when detected by the evil robots is truly menacing. It really got me thinking: "Omg, what have I done?!"

Great work!

::.::::::. by rwos 2013-04-30T21:00:00

I really liked it. Awesome atmosphere and quite eerie, I have to say I actually felt goosebumps on occasions. I tried the web version and was pleasantly surprised at how fast it's running!

To And Fro by iamwhosiam 2013-05-01T21:57:00

Another game that hurt my brain from all the flashing details and game elements that are hard to make out. After understanding what was actually going on it was actually a very playable game! Cool concept and great that you have now shown me what a 1D-shooter would be like.

for science! by xandy 2013-05-01T14:42:00

Pretty cool game. I enjoyed it. It ran perfectly for me on Linux with LÖVE 0.8.0.

The graphics were cool and it was fast paced and fun. I didn't really like the controls much tho. I ended up uncontrollably spinning around on the spot and/or ending up outside the playing area way too often because the controls were weird. I'd like it better if you could stop and accelerate much faster and if there was more drag/friction.

Also, I'd much rather see a different control scheme alltogether (Using A and D to turn relative to turn around your axis is much less intuitive than Just using them to move in the corresponding directions.)

I didn't realize that I would loose points for being outside the red circle at first. I just assumed that I had to try keeping that area clear of enemies. This should be more clearly communicated.

Also, more enemy types would be awesome. :)

Finally, after loosing the game and restarting, I immediately loose again. I have to restart the game to play a second time.

Kazimir's Revenge by Alex Shestakov 2013-05-01T12:54:00

Really great everything except for gameplay. The menus, music and the framing (no pun intended) of the game was nice, but when you actually gain control it's quite loose and floaty. Though it was a very nice surprise to fight Venus in a videogame, gotta give you that!

Cpt. Sqrjaw by vapgames 2013-05-02T20:43:00

Very cool graphics and physics style. Fast paced and fun, even tho is was a bit too easy to get stuck in a pile of corpse parts and die as a result.

The game played just fine on Linux using Wine, but I couldn't get the controller to work out of the box. Probably just needed some wine tweaking to work tho.

Only problems I had with it was the keyboard controls. Z and X just didn't feel natural for me. I'd much rather use WASD to walk (and jump) and then use space to blast people into pieces. :)

Great work!

BiT by SanctuaryInteractive 2013-05-01T15:01:00

Really cool game. It sort of has a nice atmosphere, but it is bloody difficult, especially for me who is generally useless at this type of game.

It is also really nice to see a fellow Java entry. Kudos!

Both versions worked fine for me running Oracle Java 7 on Linux, even tho tend to be dead throughout most of the "unstable" one. Did not see any freeze or crash. :)

You might wanna consider adding a loading screen tho. I was almost confident that it was broken when the screen was just white for the first 20 seconds. It wasn't until I activated the Java console that I realized that it was actually doing something.

Also, maybe it'd be better to look for a smart place to spawn the player rather than always the center of the screen? I keep spawning inside the ground or on top of spikes cuz I'm impatient. :)

minobi by Pixelboy_85 2013-05-02T20:30:00

Granted, I died a lot. Always do in these games. But it was a lot of fun and just the right level of challenging. (Thank God there wasn't a death counter, eh?)

The puzzles were well thought out. The level, even if it was just the one, took long enough to master for it to last a while. The graphics style worked out really well and was mostly self-explanatory, which I think fits great into the theme.

The only problem I noticed was that it was too difficult to jump up or fall down in very narrow passages. I guess that one pixel or something must have been off or something. That got me killed a whole bunch of times, which is a shame and sort of frustrating.

I really liked that it was browser based and ran so flawlessly.

Great work!

M-G by dotteri_thecatwolf 2013-05-01T15:43:00

Ah, sweet. Another fellow Java entry. :)

It took me a few tries to figure out why I kept dying. It is not at all obvious that colliding with your waypoint marker means game over.

Once I realized that it was quite fun to play around with tho. I managed to score 41 points, but I'm sure that others have done much better.

The graphics are a bit too simple for my taste, but it is an interesting concept and it is challenging.

The game runs flawlessly for me on Oracle's Java 7 and Linux.

Great work!

OnlyOne by mrexcessive 2013-05-02T21:16:00

Some nice level design in this game!

Psychodelic Disco Maze by admund 2013-05-01T21:50:00

Oh god, my eyes, my BRAIN! Nice little game, though the sensory overload was a bit... overbearing. Nonetheless, interesting concept, I will have to play some more after getting some sleep or something :)

(sending you back to level 1 after dying in later levels was very devious!)

Ten Shades of Grey by Nancybeast 2013-05-02T14:51:00

The game is kind of glitchy, but it's playable. I giggled at the pun title, and I really liked the rotating effect. However the first time I played I fell in the first pit and there was no way to restart the level which was kind of odd, so I just restarted the whole game.

Bong Out Wars by Eternal_Rest 2013-05-01T14:13:00

Cool game. I can also confirm that it runs well using Wine on Linux.

The game starts off a bit slow. It sort of gets a bit boring at times, but then it suddenly turns around and there are like 100 balls on the screen and you have no idea where they came from. That is quite awesome. :)

I would also have liked the ability to use the mouse to control the paddle. It'd also be cool if you could have more control over which direction balls bounce in depending on where they hit the paddle. Right now you sort of have to bump into them using the side of the paddle if you want them to change their otherwise predetermined path.

Great work! :)

Make Friends Don't Bake Them by Almax27 2013-05-01T13:35:00

Great idea, great execution, great atmosphere. Really great overall! My only remark would be about the controls and platforming not being good enough to justify the extremely short times you earned for picking up a potato or standing in a light. It sometimes got more frustrating than fun due to amount of forced trial and error, especially when you knew what to do but couldn't make a certain jump.

Shape of magic by Back to Browse Entries 2013-05-02T19:12:00

This was certainly a unique entry. It was abstract and sort of engaging despite being very minimal.

The game ran fine on Linux using Wine.

It'd be nice if you could expand your rectangles in the other direction as well, not just down/right.

I found it a bit confusing as to exactly what condition triggers the next level to start.

Good work tho!

Procedural Island Happiness by nonatomicpaul 2013-04-30T20:56:00

I like how it looks. There seems to be a bug with the ship reaching the red destination markers and turning vertical, facing upwards. I tried the web version, so I don't know if it's because of Unity's web player. Also the ship was moving through the islands and not around them. But I really like games with ships, so I enjoyed quite alot directing the little ship around the environment.

Scout by Trench 2013-05-01T20:32:00

I liked the exploration value of the game. It was fun finding all the supplies. I don't know if that's what it was supposed to happen, but when I gathered all 10, the game just froze. Some kind of a "win" screen would have been nice.

Epic Green Cube by Robrock55 2013-05-02T19:31:00

Nice work! The game runs perfectly for me using Oracle's Java 7 on Linux. I would have preferred an applet or a runnable JAR file tho, just to skip the unnecessary extraction step.

The game was easy to understand and get into, and it was challenging. The death particle effect was a nice touch as well!

I found it a bit too unforgiving to die whenever you touch a wall. That was a bit frustrating at times.

There seemed to be some stuttering/lagging in the movement when you first press down a movement button. After holding it down for a few frames it went away tho. It wasn't really noticeable in the more complex levels tho, because you didn't really move that much at a time on them.

Minimal Moves by 1WeekEndStudio 2013-05-01T13:14:00

The game runs very nicely for me on Linux. Only issue was that the keyboard controls didn't seem to work. I couldn't get past the menu. Plugging in a controller worked tho. :)

I really like the two player puzzle concept, and even just playing it yourself and switching between the characters is quite fun.

Some of the moves/actions you can do weren't that obvious tho, and it did take some failed attempts before I started learning how to do what I wanted.

Great work! And kudos for including a Linux build and using a fairly fast download site! :)

The Islander by Yezu 2013-05-20T19:24:00

Cool game. Felt quite solid for being a 48h 3D game! It ran perfectly for me on Linux. Also cool to see some JME stuff.

My main annoyance was the quite slow movement speed. It would have been awesome if there was at least some sort of sprint functionality.

Great work!

Triquacir by dertom 2013-05-20T18:36:00

Cool idea. It ran flawlessly for me on Ubuntu 13.04 64-bit. I think that the idea lends itself well to the addition of more complex gameplay. Great work! :)

Lead the Bunny by Joseph Roque 2013-05-20T19:12:00

Great work. The game ran fine for me on Linux, both using the Applet and the (not only Windows) Jar.

The controls were mostly fine, but I was really bothered by the fact that the bunny slowed down when getting closer to the light. That was especially annoying when trying to maneuver close to the edges of the level. Also, rather than clicking and dragging to move the camera, I'd rather have the camera move automatically, leading the cursor or something.

The tutorial levels were well laid out and informative. The game also looked very clean and nice graphically.

Great work!

Minimal by GingerMess 2013-05-20T19:33:00

Runs flawlessly for me on Linux. I love physics puzzle/sandbox thingies. This one is no exception. The physics simulation felt solid and the levels were well thought through. Great work!

Alien Raid by LTyrosine 2013-05-02T20:06:00

This is without a doubt my favorite game so far. I'm a HUGE fan of RTS games, but they are sadly underrepresented in Ludum Dare. This one was great. I've played it longer than I did any other game yet. It took me 23 minutes to level that evil alien base with the ground.

It took a little bit of thinking to figure out how everything worked, but that just adds to the fun.

The game was well balanced in that I had just enough time to get used to things before the first attack came to my base, and when I actually started to form my own attacks, the enemy base wasn't easy enough to bring down in one single blow. I actually had to regroup and rebuild 4-5 times before I finished it.

Even the AI controlled units did their job! :)

The controls were a bit awkward, but they worked.

I ran the game on Linux using Wine, and it worked well. The sound did get a bit messed up tho.

Kudos for making such a great game!

Sequence Initiated by mildmojo 2013-05-02T20:51:00

It is a cool underlying idea for a style of puzzle game. It's a shame you didn't have enough time to at least add one level that wasn't just "flip every switch to win". That could have really proven the validity of the idea.

Nicely done!

LD29 — Beneath the Surface

Lurks by Mapboy 2014-05-18T16:16:00

Cool game! I sort of would have liked a bit more level design tho, rather than just the starting area and then a huge empty room full of zombies. Oh, and some kind of goal, or at least a scoring system.

Nevertheless, I did kill an impressive amount of zombies before I eventually succombed to a massive horde of dozens of them standing on the same spot, rendering the attack mechanic mostly ineffective.

Graphics style is quite cool, and the shadows are a nice touch. Still, some sort of animation would have been a nice addition.

Germaniac by Jiddo 2014-05-01T20:41:00

Thanks for the comments guys!

Did you get any error message on OSX?

Germaniac by Jiddo 2014-05-06T07:45:00

@OSX users:
Sorry about that! So embarassing. Had accidentally made a typo in a file name for the OSX natives. I've uploaded a fixed version now. I hope you'll have more success with that one! :)

Undermine by TheSheep 2014-05-19T19:41:00

Cool idea for a puzzle sort of game. Took a few tries to get fully accustomed to the mechanics and to know which situations actually cause you to die. After that it was really nice.

As previously mentioned it is annoying to play from the first level every time you die. Other than that I have no complaints.

Great job!

Artifact Hunter by starfeesh 2014-05-18T16:52:00

I really liked the graphics, and the idea was great. It did become a bit repetitive to just keep manually selling stuff over and over again, and it didn't seem to always register when I wanted to place a new site. All in all, quite a cool game!

Shadows Below by HeroesGrave 2014-05-18T16:41:00

Of course. The first time I've bothered booting into Windows to rate LD entries I come across one of these very rare proper Linux entries. Oh well, the Windows build works great. :)

Graphics looks really nice and I'm very happy to see a game that feels as complete as this one. Much respect for that!

Gameplay wise the game is very nice, but I also ran out of health/energy once I had cleared out all the regular skeletons and started to attack the skeleton king. Perhaps I let myself be attacked by multiple enemies at once too much?

Anyways, great job!

Osniea by bob_fish 2014-05-18T17:17:00

Great game! Really easy to get started and good controls. I got a score of 1616 on my first try.

My only complaint is that the enemies spawn in such a predictable pattern and that they all shoot immediately time when spawning.

Eiradirian Wormfare by blay09 2014-05-18T17:08:00

Really great looking game. I like the puzzle aspect of finding and disabling security switches to get further. The enemy agents were much more powerful than I expected. Personally I really would have needed some sort of heal ability.

Still, lots of cool graphics, backstory, sounds and level content. Really impressive!

Harold's Musical Hamventure by Space_man 2014-05-19T19:02:00

At first I went for the x64 vcredist package, but seems like you need the x86 one for the game to run.

I like the pig and the levels are quite cool starting levels. I just wish it had a bit more content and got a bit more challenging before the end.

The egg that spawns a huge bird and the disappearing wall were both cool additions!

The slow acceleration did feel a bit off tho, as did the fact that you stopped immediately when releasing the movement keys.

Also, cool music!

Bouncer by TGL 2014-05-18T16:00:00

I also had to add java to my PATH environment variable before I could run it. Might be worth packaging it using Launch4J or at least as a self-contained runnable jar file.

The game ran really well. I was really surprised then I saw the game evolving while playing it. Really cool idea, and a good way of introducing the game mechanics.

It did take a while to get used to avoiding the enemies since my first instinct was to hit all of them. (After all, they are all tiny and I'm a big and mean red square!)

My score was 1902 XP and a streak of 20. Didn't really use the abilities much tho.

Great work!

Something Beneath the Surface (Sea's will) by Striwx 2014-05-18T15:25:00

The art style was really nice and unique. Completed both the jam and post-jam versions. The post-jam one is certainly more enjoyable and more complete. Took me quite a few tries to figure out how to effectively fight my way past the enemies. Especially the last two.

Nice work tho! Looks amazing! :)

Jumpland Underground by KuGrou 2014-05-19T19:52:00

Wow, this is awesome. Really challenging, really good looking, and a really interesting idea that fits the theme just right.

I managed to get a score of 135, but the random generation of the maps made them really easy sometimes, but really difficult sometimes. On the other hand, it's nice that you can't practice one level too much.

Without a doubt one of the best ones I've played. :)

Beneath The Surface by tastyoishi 2014-05-18T14:49:00

I'm afraid I couldn't get the game to run here either. First I got stuck on a blue screen, with music playing. The next time I tried I got to the "Start" button. After clicking that I was stuck on a white screen. Chrome, Win7 x64.

Sub-Surface Walk by LewisG0400 2014-05-01T20:36:00

Interesting idea. I did try the game a bunch of times, but never got to the end. How far is the end anyways?

I found it a bit weird that the game ended as soon as you used up your last break, even tho you can still pick up blocks and get more breaks. You just can't seem to get more score after that.

Also, since you can jump in mid-air as many times as you want, it would probably make more sense if you could just walk up/down normally.

I like the camera with the fading out into black effect tho. Looks good!

The game works great on Linux btw :)

Unblocker Man by Rzial 2014-05-19T19:32:00

Awesome graphics, animations and a cool idea! However, the combat didn't really feel fluent enough. I often ended up with enemies walking/spawning too close and making me not able to hit them.

Also, the added sound effects in the post-LD version were a nice addition.

Jelly Hugs by Snild 2014-05-01T20:18:00

Hey Snild! Cool to run into you here. (John David from uni @ LTH here.)

Nice game! Simple but very effective and surprisingly fun game mechanics. I love it!

Seems like there might be a rather fool-proof "algorithm" for solving the levels, which sort of lowers the replay value once you figure it out. I beat it in 160 seconds. I hope that's decent. :)

It'd be nice with some sounds btw!

RAW by ekun 2014-05-18T15:46:00

Excellent game. Graphics are good, gameplay is fast and fun. Taking out large collections of enemies does get tedious if you have to re-do it over and over again. I'd like there to be some sort of secondary weapon that is effective at taking out multiple enemies.

Debris by sudojess 2014-05-19T19:18:00

I also didn't see the bomb on my first try, but then I read the comments and gave it a few more tries. I think I got close enough to it, but I couldn't seem to interact with it.

The game looks great, and the intro scene with the shuttle getting hit looks very cool indeed.

Unfortunately I just couldn't get into the controls at all. I would have liked them to be much more accessible.

Still, great job!
