Hah. great fun. I can't believe you made all this art! Neat concept. I need my wings!
I really enjoyed it. Controls worked well, cutscenes are incredible for 2 days. Powers were neat. Felt like the right amount of challenge. I died my first time through, right at last boss. Well done!
This game was hilarious, I just wish where I needed to go and such was more clear.
Nice game! Unfortunately I was too bad to make it through the entire thing, but I am really impressed with the amount of content. I like the bosses and for the most part the game mechanics. The kid in the background freaks me out tho. Nice take on the theme.
The game works perfectly fine through Wine on Linux btw.
Haha, awesome. The kid on the background scared the shit out of me :P
Excellent piece of work. I kind of like the Megaman vibe you get from working the various powers against bosses hinted throughout. I have a personal dislike of mazing, though, so without a map it almost felt like a chore to get around :-/
Don't let that discourage you, though, the graphics is where it's at.
I loved the kid watching you.
I really enjoyed it! The end was humorously anti-climactic, and the audio was lacking, but you did an incredible job on the art, enemy, and level design!
Good game! That spider was too hard for me.
Very funny ending. The big faces which follows you: made me laughing. A good game, but very "common" (solid platformer). Was very fun to play, a bit too short :)
You should improve audio (feedback while fighting). Very nice graphics.
And you got a little bug with the z-indices: the acid is on top of the health bar.
I know that Z and X are common keys, but here in Germany, the keys Z and Y are switched and changing to US keyboard layout for playing ludum dare games is a bit... frustrating ^^... WASD XC are good ones.
Oh god the eyes.
these are all valid criticisms. i was halfway through getting a little popup map coded, but i just bit off way more than i could chew through with this. but the map was the next on the list and admittedly very important.
@jeremias: man i feel awful now! i'll not make this mistake again, regarding the key layout.
An interesting platformer.
It takes very obvious inspiration from Megaman, and the metroidvania elements are pretty standard, but it's fun nonetheless. Beating enemies felt like a chore, though; they're not harmful enough to actually harm you, but they're still in the way and it takes too much time to kill them considering how trivial they are. The bosses were a bit too easy; once you figure out how to beat them, it's just a matter of hammering the Z button until you win.
The graphics were amazing. Although the tiles themselves look pretty generic and bland, the characters, the animations, the background and the opening cutscene all look awesome. The face in the background was pretty creepy, and was a very nice touch. It was lacking death animations for the enemies, though.
Theme implementation was one of the two blatantly obvious ways (tiny character in relatively huge world or huge character in relatively tiny world), but the terrarium theme was a nice spin on it.
The game contained almost no audio, and what audio there was, was pretty annoying. I was missing a lot of auditory feedback on many things; you don't hear when you get hurt, you don't hear when you hit an enemy (as opposed to swinging and missing), et cetera. Don't underestimate the importance of sound, it takes away a lot from the game.
Overall, a nice game, but it's pretty clear it's rather unfinished. Practically no sound, enemies just suddenly disappearing when killed, the nonsensical ending, lack of spawn points - many minor flaws that subtly harm the game experience. I'd say scale back a bit and add more polish next time; it's what turns a good game into a great game.
VDZ you are a thorough and awesome reviewer. the only of your complaints i purposefully added was the nonsensical ending; i love sudden anticlimactic stops, though certainly not everyone will.
and i'll definitely be scaling way back to add polish. exactly the lesson learned here, thanks for the great review!
Haha, great entry! The graphics were amazing, and I would have probably taken all 48 hours to do the intro alone. Great job on the metroidvania-style gameplay, I think you really nailed that, and I'm amazed you were even able to create bosses for the game, not to mention not doing a straightforward/generic platformer. As VDZ and others said, the lack of music and sound feedback hurts the game, but I think the rest of it more than makes up for such omissions. Really enjoyed it, great job!
That head-thing looks grand, but I'm afraid I may only moan & curse & mumble for a Mac or web version. Do consider it next time!
well, I made it with game maker and I know there is some mac version of it, but I don't know if I can just compile it from GM8 windows straight to a mac file.
I would play if you had a Web or OSX version.
I agree with VDZ. The boss fights were entertaining. I could not stop laughing when the kid followed you. Good job!
Heh, that was fun.
The kid in the background was great.
Awesome game - great job :)
Cannot play, don't have access to windows.
