LD20 — It's Dangerous to Go Alone! Take This!

Dwarvenly by AndrewBC 2011-05-02T02:30:00

Haha, "If this weren't a ludum game, you'd be so dead right now."

Save The Cats by ekun 2011-05-02T03:11:00

Thanks for the comment! Good catch on the missing .dll, I've included it in the download so nobody has to manually download anything.

4 kittens isn't bad for a first try! I've only managed to get 7 in a run myself.

Save The Cats by ekun 2011-05-02T06:11:00

@TellusE That's very odd. Could you tell me a little about your computer specifications? I've only done testing on my own machine, but as far as I can tell two other people have run it successfully.

@ekangas Thanks for the comment! 15 kittens is way more than I've managed yet. Yeah, the cat getting stuck can be annoying. I'm keeping a list of changes I want to make that I can put into a post-compo v.2

Save The Cats by ekun 2011-05-02T23:58:00

Hey guys, thanks for the comments! I just fixed the bug where the cat gets lost, as well as collision issues. I hope its not against Ludum Dare rules to fix a bug before voting is over!

Save The Cats by ekun 2011-05-03T22:20:00

Hi telluse,
After spending a good amount of time trying to figure out the problem, I realized the issue: the resolution of the game window was too large! Initially, it was 600x800. This meant that if your desktop resolution was less than 800 in height, the window wouldn't open.

Hopefully this is your issue, I went ahead and patched the download so its compatible with lower resolutions if you'd like to try downloading it again. Thanks for your report, I wouldn't have found this bug otherwise.

Save The Cats by ekun 2011-05-06T17:04:00

To anybody having trouble running the game. I looked into the problem, and it appears to be an issue with ATI Catalyst drivers version >= 10.10. Sorry to everybody with the issues, but unfortunately its a problem with the library I used: SFML.

To everybody else, thanks for playing my game!

Save The Cats by ekun 2011-05-22T17:20:00

@Mr.Wonko

If you downloaded my package, you would notice that I am using SFML 2. I too, thought the bug was fixed (it was mentioned that it was fixed in 2.0 by Laurent in a forum post) but it still persists.

I think I'll try grabbing the latest snapshot and recompiling though, maybe it was a more recent bugfix than I thought.

Save The Cats by ekun 2011-05-22T18:27:00

Ok, so I've uploaded a version with the very latest snapshot of SFML2. If anybody with an ATI card wants to test the game and report whether it works or not, it would be greatly appreciated.

Lonely Fortress by Winterblood 2011-05-02T06:17:00

Nice work! I can tell you put a lot of effort into this game.

Unfortunately, I have a couple of gripes that prevented me from beating/enjoying this game to the fullest. First of all, the inverse control scheme was quite hard to get used to. Most PC first-person view games use a standard scheme (move mouse up = look up).

Another thing, half way through I got stuck in the wall and couldn't move. Needless to say, I couldn't progress any further than that.

Despite these two issues, I really enjoyed the voice acting, and the 3D graphics look great.

LD21 — Escape

Room Escape by bmfs 2011-08-22T22:54:00

I was frustrated at first because I had no idea how to play. Once I understood the controls however, it was smooth sailing.

Anyways, when I finally beat the game it took me a minute to understand the application of the theme, but when I finally got it I understood the sound effects used.

Nice job!

Flow by Scrapworks 2011-08-22T22:30:00

A very unforgiving platformer. Starting off the game with the quote, "You are running from some shit i cant think of" doesn't really give yourself any points, either. Collisions felt unfair at times, well demonstrated by the sawblades on level 2.

It took me a good deal of time to get accustomed to the controls, and only through trial and error did I finally figure out how to run up walls. If there were some sort of tutorial or even written explanation of how to play at first I'm sure I wouldn't have gotten as frustrated.

I also managed to crash the game on the first level by falling through the wire (like the arrow directed me to!) to my death.

On the plus side, I really enjoyed the music. The level design seemed solid as well, and I think it would have worked very well if the mechanics were tweaked/improved a little.

Overall, good job on finishing your game! I feel like if you had a little bit more time to iron out the bugs/have others test, you would have had a much better final product, but it's almost there!

Demonout - the roguesque adventure by theosk 2011-08-26T19:24:00

I have to agree with Shigor in that the game was way too easy. I became bored after the first few levels, but I continued because I was interested in what the ending might be.

Unfortunately, I discovered a bug on floors 16/17 where I could only cycle between the two floors.

LD22 — Alone

Not A Soul in the World by BadgerPriest 2011-12-19T06:12:00

I thoroughly enjoyed the story.

I only managed to uncover 3/6 memories before I gave up, but I tried every query I could think of.

I couldn't get the sound to work on Chrome, strangely enough.

Five stars in theme for an interesting application of 'Alone,' for sure.

Richter's Party by condr 2011-12-19T05:34:00

Pretty solid mechanics, I can tell you put a good amount of effort tweaking the controls. The graphics could have been more distinct for spikes, however.

Overall, worth playing because of the classic platforming fun.

Alone in the Dark by JayCFraser 2011-12-19T05:49:00

Not a bad concept, although I have a couple of gripes.

Although I understand your desire for the graphics to be dark to create a certain atmosphere, I found myself straining my eyes for all of the game. Perhaps it could be brighter while retaining the small light area?

Additionally, the "invalid move" beeping sounds were quite grating.

I couldn't figure out how to pick up the things (flares?) on the ground either, and I'm pretty sure I tried all the buttons listed in the controls. (E, Enter, space, f, etc..)

The config tool didn't seem to set my settings to windowed mode correctly.

Please don't take my critique too harshly, I enjoy roguelike/turnbased grid games tremendously (I made one too!), I just think this game has the potential to be much better if you take my suggestions into account.

Oh Dear, I've Lost My Hat by fakeyou 2011-12-19T06:17:00

Enjoyed your graphics style a lot, the game was short and sweet.

It was a little annoying when I clicked on a tile twice how it would make me backtrack, but the movement was smooth enough (pathfinding, yeah!).

Alone - Island Generator by Spujika 2011-12-19T05:39:00

Not quite a game, but I appreciated your guitar skills.

LD23 — Tiny World

The Two of Us by ekunkeo 2012-04-24T03:14:00

Oh yeah, achievements. Right after we implement the three-tier DLC expansion!

Planetline by SSJMetroid 2012-04-24T02:13:00

I don't like how the character gets stuck. And I know exactly why it happens; Box2D man, you've gotta tweak it so much to get it to feel right.

Oh also, I got stuck on the 5th or so level because I couldn't escape a vicious tile's corner. The suicide key (K) didn't seem to work either unfortunately.

I blame all

Now on to the good things:
I like the magma animation. Much better than filling in the planet with gray "rock" or green "grass" or w/e.
I like the guy's sprite. Reminds me of some retro games.
I like the toroidal world, it looks likes you used some Maths.

Planetline by SSJMetroid 2012-04-24T02:14:00

oh i didnt mean to submit. i was going to say i blame it all on the physics engine

LD26 — Minimalism

Factorism by dagothig 2013-04-30T04:23:00

I really like the watching the little circles go through the machinery.

I beat the first level, but when it asked for 10 purple circles I didn't know how to exit the pipe building mode.

Minimalist Art Club by basspenguin 2013-04-30T04:26:00

I'm going to have to echo MvT here, I couldn't figure out how to make my blot of red bigger for the life of me.

Squeeps by Ryusui 2013-04-30T05:05:00

Cute game, love the sound effects.
I laughed out loud when my little guy barfed his stomach out.

Orbit by boboKat 2013-04-30T04:37:00

Pretty fun, although I couldn't figure out any new orbs after the firey one.

Root Route! by netpro2k 2013-04-30T04:31:00

Love the mechanic and simplicity.

I feel like the game could be sped up though, I stopped playing after the 5th level because it felt too slow.

Ghost Garden by ceMelusine 2013-05-04T00:53:00

I really liked the mood in this one

Minty Relaxation by TheChris 2013-04-30T05:25:00

Nicely done, I appreciate the polish you guys put into this.

I got excited when I realized that hitting the edges of the platform did something.

Small Tale by hitchh1k3r 2013-04-30T06:08:00

Nice work!

Liked the build up to the dragon fight, wasn't sure whether my choices did anything though.

I almost killed the dragon, but it got me with a fireball :(. It was a little unintuitive to me that I should move away from the dragon to block his attacks, that got me hit more than once.

Pongless by Otoris 2013-04-30T04:34:00

The ball got stuck rotating around me, I couldn't dislodge it despite spamming space.

Touch Blocks, Avoid Spikes by ecbambrick 2013-04-30T05:19:00

Really nice job man!

I think I might've appreciated it more if it were purely a puzzle game, but that may just be because I'm bad at dodging spikes. Got to level 8 before I gave up.

LD27 — 10 Seconds

Ninja Words by PabloAlexandre31 2013-09-01T02:21:00

good job, i got 1019 before i got bored.

The Stolen Seconds by Jogy34 2013-08-30T00:56:00

I have the same problem with the player moving too fast.

I actually had this same issue when I created my first game in Java. I recommend using the Timer class to run your main game loop to fix the issue.

I disagree by papercaves 2013-08-28T02:08:00

Fun!

I too ran out of screen space at the end though. My score was 4620

10 Seconds Warning by pvwradtke 2013-08-27T03:18:00

Nice job!

Unfortunately I had a graphics glitch where the background wouldnt get cleared. Still, it was fun.

Chronodrive by ekun 2013-08-27T05:56:00

thanks for the comments!
@eskivor: yes, the music is a loop we threw together in the last minutes.

Chronodrive by ekun 2013-08-29T20:42:00

@gre:
Thanks! We actually did originally plan on introducing the game mechanics one by one. We had three bosses planned, and each one would introduce a new mechanic. Unfortunately, we had to cut down our scope in order to finish in time.

LD28 — You Only Get One

Save One For The Kids by SonnyBone 2013-12-17T03:32:00

Extremely polished, and man stage 10 was satisfying.

I'm glad you didn't force me to retry stages where I missed, it was refreshing to be able to finish the game in one go despite my mistakes.

Well done! Fun game.

One Orb by patricklorio 2013-12-16T03:31:00

Nice game! We both made a game about orbs, haha.

My biggest suggestion would be to lock the camera onto the player. It was really disorienting when it jumped away from the player whenever I moved to the edge of the screen.

I played until the middle of level 3, where my game crashed.

Music was nice, and the basic mechanic was simple, but fun.

One at a Time by Elforama 2013-12-16T04:12:00

@patricklorio Press C while in planning mode.

Nice game, I liked the small details such as the platforms moving back a little before moving.

Cosplay Cleanup Crew by jormungandr 2013-12-16T07:34:00

I liked the variety of the characters and enemies. The simple graphics style was well matched by the smooth movement between each tile.

My biggest suggestion though would be to change the controls to be a little more intuitive, it's a little bit tedious to reach for page up and page down so many times each turn.

Nice game!

Conquest by SiM2SiM 2013-12-16T07:29:00

Hey, nice game. The mechanics felt good, and shooting the gun was satisfying.

I wish that the bullets did more damage to the enemies though, it got a little bit frustrating later on waiting to mow through each guy.

Good job!

The Adventures of Yogo by Lazdo 2013-12-16T03:35:00

Nice game, solid mechanics.

I feel like the level design couldv'e used a little more work though, some of the jumps were frustrating because of blocks directly over the jump ledge.

Good job!

1 Day, 1K by Tridecimal 2013-12-16T07:38:00

Simple but satisfying to play. Good stuff.

The Hallowed Orb by ekun 2013-12-16T19:34:00

Thanks for the feedback!

I went ahead and changed the screenshot per your suggestion :)

PUSH by Patacorow 2013-12-16T20:23:00

Hey, fun game!

I loved the small details you put in, and the animations felt spot on.

I played up until level 17, couldn't figure out how to save the top guy.

Once Charged by pighead10 2013-12-16T23:09:00

Fun game, although I couldn't beat the last level!

In fact I think I found a bug where my shot would go through the exploding block.. this is when I was right underneath it.

Quite challenging, but the game was explained well so it wasn't too frustrating.

Nice job!

LD29 — Beneath the Surface

mungo: wrenchlord by 01010111 2014-04-30T14:12:00

Loved the mini games, and the platforming mechanics felt solid.

Short but sweet, well done.

RAW by ekun 2014-04-30T22:44:00

thanks for playing everyone : )

So theme wise, if it's not obvious the players naked (beneath the surface ... of clothes) and he's escaping to the surface, you'll see him on an elevator at the end. Yea pretty shallow take on the theme I guess.

@jacklehamster definitely recommend playing with a mouse if you have one, but I guess we should add bindable keys for shooting and rolling anyways.

@fallingBear with the rolling it made certain situations possible allowing us to design levels with it in mind. Also there's a tactile-ness and feel that I like about adding rolling/dodge mechancis to games. Maybe the distance/speed and window of invulnerability could be tweaked.

-keo

RAW by ekun 2014-04-30T23:59:00

@crocantidepollo hmmm was thinking about this actually, if we binded the dodge mechanic based on arrow keys, then you'd only be able to dodge in 4 directions. I could see this working with twin stick controls, using one stick to controll direction/movement, and the other stick to control dodge direction.

@shasharalla the model was sketched in photoshop, I'm pretty familiar with painting the human body, so it was just a matter of visualizing it at different angles. I start out roughing/blocking in the figure on each frame then go in and add details. First time working with photoshop video layers, definitely gonna be using them more.
keo

RAW by ekun 2014-05-01T19:33:00

I like the core game mechanic, I haven't really played anything like it before. I didn't spend too much time jumping around, my strategy was to fight on the bottom floor while avoiding falling platforms.

Great idea and execution, it was fun.

Kram Keep by Knighty 2014-12-09T00:14:00

All the elements of a good metroidvania.

I was a little bit disappointed by the boss, but I understand how the time constraints can cut things off.

Will come back to rate this highly after you enable ratings.

LD32 — An Unconventional Weapon

BED✰HOGG by 01010111 2015-04-22T23:17:00

Despite only being able to play single player, I really enjoyed this game. The pixel art is gorgeous, the characters are cute, and the AI pleasantly surprised me with its competence.

It would've been nice to have some more challenging content for a single player playthrough, but given the amount of time you had I have no complaints.

Nicely done, as always!

Daygore Bunko by SonnyBone 2015-04-22T23:52:00

I can definitely see why you went for the jam! Well worth it I think.

At times I wanted to be able to hit two melee guys at once with my weapon, but it wasn't quite possible as the melee range is quite narrow. I had to play rather carefully in order to progress without dying.

While the transformation's attack was strong, it would've been nice to become more resilient to damage along with it. I died in both of my far runs while transformed, as a result of being too aggressive and thinking I was invincible.

I think the music and sound effects were the best part of it all. Hitting enemies felt satisfying, and the music was spot on. Oh and the varied/unique game over music was a nice touch!

Fun game, with lot's of potential.

Ring Retorter by zatyka 2015-05-07T04:35:00

Loved it!

I have fond memories playing The Secret of Monkey Island, you managed to capture to sword-fighting mechanics perfectly.

Bat out of Hell by ianh 2015-04-21T01:47:00

Hack and slash roguelite? This is my kind of game.

I was pleasantly surprised to discover a new type of weapon on floor 5, up until then I wasn't sure if I was just looking for a bigger sword. I made quick work of the boss with the charm I found, although I'm not sure if there were an alternative weapons I could find.

Animations were simple but attacking felt great, loved the subtle particle effects.

The only mechanics suggestion that I think would really help would be showing some indication of what your mouse is over by highlighting the target. Some of the click hitboxes felt a little finicky.

Great work!

Rude Bear Raid by Alex Rose 2015-05-07T00:31:00

The sheer amount of content and polish in this entry is really impressive. Although I wasn't able to test the multiplayer aspect very much, the mechanics of movement and combat felt solid.

I've tackled an online LD game before, and I know it's next to impossible to get a good experience going without players. I've always been impressed with the Rude Bear games technology solving this issue with asynchronous multiplayer.

The main level is pretty large, it'd be neat to see some basic AI in this kind of game to fill in the space some. Adding some classic Rude Bear level hazards like spikes would be cool as well, to add alternate ways of dying.

Overall, I think this game has a lot of potential for a post-Jam version. Well done!

UNIVERSALIS by Atmospherium 2015-04-22T23:32:00

I liked the ambient music, it added a mysterious effect to it all. The effect of collecting orbs and having them flying towards you to orbit your planet felt good.

I might've misconfigured my controls, but I *really* wanted to be able to change my pitch up and down to freely explore the solar system.

I really enjoyed slowly flying away from the center sun; watching it get smaller and smaller on my screen and eventually finally seeing the system of planets in its entirety.

Mass-X by hexagore 2015-04-20T03:01:00

Fun little game! Beat it fairly easily, although it took me a couple tries with the falling swap level.

It could've used some more stages, but otherwise the level of polish made it an enjoyable, albeit short, experience.

Props also for using Three.js / WebGL.

A Knife Made Of Whispers by managore 2015-04-24T01:39:00

The music does a great job at adding to the dark and mysterious ambiance, and the graphics and effects were quite pretty.

My main complaint is that the controls took a super long time to get accustomed to. I felt like I accelerated too fast, which led to a lot of frustrating deaths where I'd run off ledges or into enemies I was attacking. I'd find myself wanting to move with the same friction as when I was carrying the lantern, but the switching between movement mechanics when holding it versus not holding it threw me off. I tried using a joystick controller at first, but as the acceleration is all-or-nothing I found that the stick hurt more then helped movement. I'm not a huge fan of level-based platformers like Super Meat Boy (blasphemy I know), so it might just be me here.

There was a ton of content, much more than I expected in a Ludum Dare game. The levels had varied and interesting challenges; I especially enjoyed the sections where I had to ascend a small corridor while dodging enemies or projectiles.

I liked the mysterious snippets of text, but by the end of the game I couldn't quite piece together what exactly the story was. Some kind of ending cinematic or even textbox would've helped to tie the story together as well as reward the player for finishing the game.

Although this isn't my kind of game, I did enjoy it! Near the end of the game once I got used to the controls, it was fun to zip around the level throwing the lantern to go fast. I could easily see this game being well-suited to speed runs.

Super polished game, well done!

keyTD by foolmoron 2015-05-02T03:33:00

I initially thought this was just a typing game, so I was pleasantly surprised by your idea of re-purposing the keyboard as a huge controller. I've never actually seen this done before in a game, so props to you!

I think the first few levels felt the best, before the button-mashing reached an exhausting pace. I wish there were some notion of accurate presses to reward precise key actions instead of always spamming. It also felt a little awkward holding an Area Blast button while spamming other keys with my other fingers; I ended up not using Area Blast much at all.

Still, the tower defense game mechanic at its core was really fun. I would've kept on playing if my hands weren't so tired, but I had to stop at Wave 14. Bummer.

Side note: The windows build didn't register key presses correctly for me (I spent way too long wondering what I was doing wrong), although the webGL version worked perfectly.

Fanttum: Sorry, don't have a Mac to build on yet. Maybe in the future though.

Get Gorgon! by vandriver 2015-04-23T23:21:00

I love this game.

My first couple runs were met with unfortunate death to beast or gorgon, which quickly established how dangerous the darkness was. Limiting the turn-rate on the mirror angle made exploration even more tense, as I dashed around corners, evading beasts and delving further into the maze.

The rats are a genius touch; at first I was confused as to their purpose, but at my first death to the gorgon I saw the surrounding stone rat statues and it immediately clicked. When I next came across the petrified rats, I was prepared with my mirror.

It would've been nice to see a little more polish to the ending and maybe the audio, but for 48 hours I think you did an excellent job creating a fun game with a captivating mood.

Coats The Mod by LuckyCassette 2015-05-07T00:10:00

I really liked the flavor of this world!

The visuals and sound effects were well polished, and the application to the theme was unique.

My biggest complaint was how the movement felt; it felt awkward having to completely release a direction before I could press another to chain a turn into a move or vice versa. I think adding either input buffering or multi-button polling (instead of events) would greatly help how the movement feels.

I can definitely see this game being expanded into a nice stand-alone adventure.
