Great art as usual. I dig the pixelated transitions. Reminds me of the good ol' days. I made sure to play some music while I GAMED.
I DUG IT!

Great art as usual. I dig the pixelated transitions. Reminds me of the good ol' days. I made sure to play some music while I GAMED.
I DUG IT!
OOOOOH. COOOOOL.
I dig the music, the look, the touch, the feeeeeeel.
OF COTTON.
THE ATTACK OF THE JARTOS!
Rad art and nifty idea!
FINISH HIM! YES SIR!
NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM
Nice use of theme!
Nice use of theme, here. It's certainly innovative. It look good, too... which is always a plus.
:D
LOOKS AMAZING. It's a bit slow and cumbersome, but that's me being REALLY nit-picky, as what you have is quite impressive.
Congrats!
THIS IS NO GAME. THIS IS A MURDER SIMULATOR.
And a rad one at that. Messing around is fun and a good way to kill some time. Your art skillz are mos def.
This could use some more polish, of course... but what you have is REALLY neat. It looks great, plays smoothly, has a great use of theme, and is pretty innovative!
I SAID GOOD JOB, SIR!
I wasn't expecting this to play so smoothly, to be honest... but it did. AND IT DOES.
And it... will?
I'll stop.
The SFX are nice, and the game looks great. It runs AWESOMELY on my setup.
I LIKE THIS!
Addictive gameplay! The backgrounds are soooo good.
Great job!
The game looks GREAT, but the hit boxes are too huge for the enemies. I dig the RUUUUUUUUN concept at the end of each zone.
SOOOOOO GOOD. Funny, innovative, purdy, and DANG FUN.
This is one of the best LD entries I've ever played.
SUCCESS!!!
For the longest time I just thought you hated drawing hands, then I realized that they're wearing straight jackets! DURRR.
Amazing intro screen... lots of innovation going on all over. It looks and moves so beautifully.
GOOD WORK!
COOL LEVEL EDITOR! That's always a nice plus.
Took me 26 minutes. I just couldn't find any dang ol' GOLD PEARLS! Ow. Now my wrist hurts. :(
This was pretty fun but lacked something that I can't put my finger on... It controls very well and looks nice.
COOL!
The dashing is very rad. You have a neat mechanic that you should expand upon. This game could be really great with more time and some extra features.
I dig the 'Baby Mario' style heart mechanic!
This is pretty rad, but when you get stuck in a pile of OLD MEN, you just repeat the GOT ITEM thing for eternity. Weapon variety is hilarious! I won't mention the funny weapons here just so everyone can see them in-game without being spoiled. With some more additions and tweaks, this could be really great!
I did everything right on the first go, so I'm not sure if there is a wrong way... I'll have to play again to find out, but the story was captivating.
@Johnicholas - My original idea was to have some enemies that are aggressive and others that are not. I ran out of time and couldn't implement the aggressive type.
@Orangy Tang - Yeah, I just didn't have enough time. :( I actually have player damage and knockbacks coded but no attack animation or attack AI for the enemies.
At first I was like UHHHHHHHHHHH and then I was like OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG. The song will turn you into a crazy person, but the upgrades are rad. The new version looks HAWT.
This is really well made! You've mastered the core mechanic, now just expand on it and add more puzzles and this will be a really awesome game!
Not very innovative, of course... but it's still solid. It could use some extra powerups and enemies that actually provide a challenge. I did dig the little star constellations in deep space, though!
SANDWICH GET!
I laughed.
And got devoured by a shark.
OOOoOOOoOOOOOOoooooOOH THIS IS HARD!
Man, this is pretty dang innovative. Kudos!
I want to get good at this game, but the control scheme needs some refinements or changes... or something. Or maybe I just really suck?
Great job!
Couldn't tell what the red powerup does.
I'm a hoss. I was able to stand right in the middle of the tornado!
Some type of explanation would be handy.
I could never make it to the top. :(
I think the farthest I got was 143 feet.
I loved the 'NO' when you fall into the pit at the start.
I could never make it to the top. :(
I think the farthest I got was 143 feet.
I loved the 'NO' when you fall into the pit at the start.
The game is totally broken for me. The web version does not let me enter any areas. It goes to a white screen. The IDE version lets me to get other areas but will not let me enter doors or progress at all.
OK I finally got the game to run correctly but the audio stopped working.
D'OH
Nice ending!
I got the 'DISAPPEAR' glitch after getting the gold and trying to head back. Couldn't complete the game. :(
With some sound and bug fixes this would be pretty solid, although the lizard men are a bit of a pushover and could use some OOMPH.
THIS. WAS. AMAZING.
I'd love to see a video explaining your rendering style. Or something. Maybe it's in your blog. I'll go read that right away, but WOW. I loved this.
It had FEELING. And man, it's so gorgeous.
I LOVE IT!
I went through with the installation but the game will not run on my system - win7 64 bit.
I like the story! It makes the gameplay that much more rewarding. Good job!
Yeah the sign was hilarious! This is a pretty neat idea and I like your interpretation of the them... cuz it IS dangerous to go alone! BZZZZZZZZT
I'm glad dodgeball wasn't like this in school...
Your map looks really nice with the static lighting and all. You took the theme and made something unique! Good job!
That music track is oddly atmospheric and quite fitting. The game's a bit short but it's a solid foundation.
Things I love:
- The room transition effect
- Character design / overall visual style
- Companion powers! (ICE WEASEL!)
- GAME OVER SCREEN
Things I didn't like:
- No Sound
- THOSE FRIGGIN FIRE TURRETS! GAAAAAAHHHH! KILLED ME SO MUCH!
Your LOW TECH time lapse was great, btw!
Yay I beat Ganon.
Such a strange and interesting little game... the music is very ominous and the visuals with the waveform are really unique. I had a hard time figuring out how to jump over certain blocks, but when I got the sword I was able to fly around the whole stage. The weapon inside the laserbeam is a really cool idea.
Ooooh, this is really cool! I dig the audio-cue gameplay.
Rad idea! It is rather short and could use some SFX, but the idea is fresh.
I FOUND A SECRET AREA! I love secrets. Good work!
Fun little game, although the physics are extra floaty and the movement is pretty slow.
WAT
That music is HYPNO TOAD IS KING OF ALL
Hmmm. Maybe instead of different key combos to control the guys, you could just use WASD or the arrows and then have a toggle button that switches between colors with an on-screen indicator? I dunno... The way it is now, I kept forgetting which set of buttons was for which guy. When developing a game, you can easily forget what it might be like for somebody that's never played your game, as you're SO CLOSE TO IT that everything is almost second nature.
The idea is really rad, though... and this would be a KILLER co op experience!
Can't get it to run in any browser.
:(
The inhaler concept for BULLET TIME is really awesome. MAJOR INNOVATION POINTS! It is a bit short, but this is Ludum Dare! You've come up with a great idea, now go make it betta!
This is pretty good, actually. It could stand to be a bit more forgiving in some part, but balancing is super hard in 48 hours. The theme seems kinda tacked on, though.
Yeah, is there a way to leave the room?
UGH. I want to beat this but I can't keep the mouse from losing focus in the game window when I click to jump. It keeps freezing the view and then I have to move the mouse back to the Unity window to regain focus.
I dig the overall look and atmosphere, and the little Portal 2 - esque 'helping companion' is a great touch!
I'm not sure I really understand how to get the best YOU KILL party score. The whole thing really confused me.
Don't get me wrong... I like marching across the earth with my super evil undead pals and slaughtering humans, but I just didn't know what the point was besides clicking on my friends and avoiding my enemies.
BOOM
I'm not really show how well this matches the theme
BOOM
But it looks rad and the 3D planet with impact craters is awesome!
BOOM
Really awesome core concept and very solid gameplay! With a graphical / audio makeover, this could be REALLY solid and make tons of CA$H!!!
This is a very challenging and rewarding game. The core mechanics are flawless, and the art is insanely consistent. This is nearly perfect all around except for the theme. I love the SHOOT TO SAVE feature and the SHOOT TO MULTI JUMP.
Hidden areas + upgrades + epic battles = WOW
Great work. Period. Not even considering this was made in 48 hours... this is just a great, simple game.
You should be proud.
This is pretty fun but needs procedural levels to really take flight. Oh, and the theme isn't represented in the game, it seems.
I LOVE THE SFX!
WHOA. You made THIS with Game Maker? Rad!
I love the visual style and the humor! The fish upgrade was NOT expected. lol
Some rad music and more sfx would make it TOP NOTCH!
GOOD WORK!
I LOVE the animation of the player. In fact, I love the entire design of the player. SO RAD.
The music is great, and you've come up with some really solid mechanics... like the buttons for controlling the sliding walls and the transparent areas that only the player can move through.
This is a really great game! I dig it!
I LAFFED
Mission accomplished
You can label your own links, so you can change it to say WEB.
Same here. The art in your journal looks really good so I hope you fix this so I can check it out!
Still hanging on the loading screen, even when downloading the SWF file.
Uh.
LOL
Trolled the whole compo.
OOOOOOH this is rad! I love the 2d/3d style and the characters give me a HOTEL DUSK vibe, which is really awesome. Sounds were really awesome as well. The text boxes stick out like a sore thumb, though. They don't really fit the rest of the game. This was the first game I played for LD20, btw.
I got to 50 deaths but not too sure how this fits the theme? Seems more like TRAPS, which was the theme I was rooting for, anyway!
OH MAN. As usual, your game is friggin' hilarious and unique.
I LOVE THIS.
Right off the bat I got a POPULOUS feel. Even though there are no instructions, I was able to figure out what to do really quickly. It's very intuitive. The visual style is rad and consistent, the gameplay is fresh and challenging, and it's HILARIOUS!
GAH!
I WANT YOUR POWERS!
WTF AM I lol
It's gaming in squigglevision!
I loved the obvious Zelda map nods.
It took a while to 'get' it... but then it became REALLY FUN!
I can see a polished version of this being VERY popular.
GREAT JOB!
The dude's 360 degree spinning head is total hilarity!
Won't run for me, either. Same DLL error as above.
:( Can't play it
Tried to play in a virtual OS/X environment. No go.
A lot of these games with SOURCE ONLY have very low play rates. I can't run this, either.
I kept getting stuck in the walls and it would repeat the 'door is locked' messages. :(
Easily the best game of this type in the compo. The art is brilliant as usual!
Thanks for the feedback! That's a very good recommendation about the crafting click. I'm actually very shocked to hear that you were able to figure out how the game works... especially the stamina regeneration. I figured that it would be nearly impossible for anyone to figure that out. This means that either my game isn't as confusing as I thought, or you're just a very observant and patient gamer. Either way... THANKS!
Yeah I hate that I didn't add an intro skip. Just one of those last minute things that would've really helped people out. Getting killed over and over is made even worse when you have to wait so long to restart. Thanks for playing! And yeah, cutting down the entire island leaves you with no way to EAT. Poor guy.
@Aaron - Yeah it WAS a big leap of faith. When you're playing your own game... you sorta get a big head about it. Then when it comes time to rate... you realize that most people aren't gonna have the patience to deal with your game for a long period of time if they want to move on to one of the other 800 games. And your remake is AMAZING! I won't have any time to keep working on Ab-Alone... school is starting back and I'm still working on an XBLIG project. Thanks!
@Cosr - I totally agree on the standing around and waiting bit. That's one of those balancing issues that you can't really iron out in 48 hrs unless you're lucky enough to get it right the first time. The days were originally twice as long, so at least I was able to cut it down THAT much. Thanks!
@DDRKirby(ISQ) - The tooltips thing came up a few times during development... even if just to give a name to the items. I then screwed it up by using the alien's native language. I eventually changed the text to english for the tools and removed the other tooltips completely. I was going for a funny/light hearted feel so the music I composed is a mixture of that overall feel with some ambience thrown in (water / birds).
@Black Ships Fill the Sky - I'm glad you enjoyed what you played! I certainly could've used more visual cues, but I was already out of time. I had to cut so many planned features that there was no way to add extra details. The guide will help explain what everthing is/does if you ever wanna try it again. Thanks for commenting!
@gebirgsbaerbel - The music was done in Fl Studio and it includes the ocean/bird sounds in the island music track. The SFX were all done with the downloadable version of Bfxr. I don't use the randomly generated sounds. I typically start from scratch and develop my own. You should try it out if you haven't already. Thanks for the comment and rate!
I want that song to play whenever I go into a new room in real life.
I found that the controls are a bit sticky and you will continue going in the wrong direction after pressing a different key. You can also get stuck on the edge of the screen. Like you said... it's very minimalist, but it gets the job done.
UH. OK. I MURDERED SO MANY JIVE TURKEYS. Love the music!
I screamed and screamed and screamed but the little scab box still eroded. I have no idea wtf I just played, but I know that I played it. INNOVATIONS!
This is really fun. Hard as hell... but fun. I'd love to see this expanded upon wit a boost in the artwork. Keep working on this!
Great core mechanic. Got tiring after a while. Good puzzles... totally crazy that this was in 48 hours. Good job!
This is really fun. Great theme song!
Freezes at startup
SLOTH LOVE CHUNK! The axe swinging feels brutally slow. You managed to fit in a decent amount of modeling in the timeframe. Great lighting... although the worls feels very bare. I can't really image how much more you could've done with this in the alloted time, though.
I remember trying to make a game with Adventure Game Studio years ago... I spent 3 weeks on a single dialogue tree and decided to just stop. lol
This was a refreshing break from the other entries! Thanks!
I enjoyed playing this. The graphics leave a lot to be desired, but the audio fills the gaps.
Keep working on this. You have a really solid foundation. Yeah, it's basically a Zelda clone... but it's dang fun. KILLED BY SOME GIANT HOCKEY GUY?!?!?! lol
With some more detailed animations and refined/slower controls... this would be really solid.
I really dig the ending music. I love how the game begins to take shape while you play. I just assumed you were going for some kind of odd aesthetic and then BOOM it starts to come together. Not really a game or a challenge, of course.. but a very solid mood nonetheless.
You have a great starting point. I'd like to see this game completed.
So... strange. I'd like to see where this could go.
Won't load. :(
I had no idea what was going on, but it was interesting. Very short, though. The part with the white-to-black guys is very confusing.
Yeah, I also experienced the slowdown. Reading your blogs... I am now incredibly interested in how this was put together. I know nothing of HTML5 and all that jazz... so this is pretty dang rad.
HOLY CRAP. A MASTER SYSTEM GAME?
*dies of excitement*
What made you decide to avoid the theme?
Totally unexpected outcome. Needs some more audio to really tie it together.
Can't wait to see the full version!
Yeah I was totally expecting a card game. Those poor little ghosts just don't have the detail of the lighthouse. Maybe that's why the lighthouse wants them dead... again?
Maybe post a video?
I GOT NO FRANDS :(
Plays like other old school marble games, so the controls are fine for me. Do the enemies ever fight back?
I can't get over the computer screen pop ups with the little 'jiggle/wiggle/jitter' animation. It's small things like that... they go a long way in making a lasting impression. Great entry!
WHOAMAGAWD. Please keep working on this... It's kind of hard at first, but I was able to eventually learn how to slaughter blobs. I was freaked out at first because I had NO idea how to score a goal in soccer. GREAT GAME! Thanks for making this.
HAAAAARD!!! I suck at these kinds of games on a keyboard. I got murdered relentlessly.
DANG IT. Your game is GORGEOUS as usual... and the story is heart wrenching. Quite simply... I love it. Thanks for making this!
FIVE STARS IN COMMUNITY FOR THE PEE WEE GIF! The music here is very rad, but I kinda wish the rest of the game was as striking as the backgrounds and main menu.
I tutorial would really help... because I could figure out how to block into infinity... but couldn't find a way to land a single blow without taking damage myself. Great visuals!
THIS IS ZANY. IN THE BEST WAY, BRO! No theme, though. ARG! Rad audio and graffixxx, dude. TUBULAR ASSORTMENT OF GNARLY SLAMS!!! I love this.
Death achievements! Nice addition.
I remember seeing your MAP POSTS before the deadline! This is pretty dang big. I died a lot... but you used CHECKPOINTS so you get kudos!
The aesthetics are beautiful. Like Matthias said... the mouse cursor gets lost outside of the game and makes all of your other inputs useless. The camera gets stuck outside of the space station if you get too close to the ceiling, and the dang thing is just plain hard to control. Maybe I suck at it. I REALLY dig how this looks, and it has a great mood. Makes me want to try Unity!
I love this. SO MUCH. It's short, but OH WELL. And XNA to Unity? BONUS SCORE!!!
OH COME ON
Everybody knows that a backflippin kitty would get scooped up in a heartbeat.
FIVE HOURS? This is better than a large majority of full-on 48 hour attempts. Good work!
The audio was sooooo quiet for some reason. I would turn up my speakers to full blast and it would almost get... more quiet? SPOOKY.
OH MY GOD AWESOME! That guy REALLY has to piss. This was fun as piss. And funny as piss.
Have you ever had to pee so bad you could taste it? Yeah, that's why he's moving so fast.
Yeah the rope took me a while as well. I even laid out all 8 logs on the ground in the shape of a box. Felt like an idiot. BUT I WON! ... but I accidentally left my friend behind. :(
If only the game could look like that title screen... lol
I farted, swore, and spun. WHATTAWORLD!
I tried everything and still can't get this to work. :(
Whoa this is really well made. Good work as usual!
I love how... when you lose... THIS GAME THROWS YOUR ASS TO THE DESKTOP LIKE YESTERDAY'S GARBAGE! BOOM! GET OUTTA HERE! The music is so rad. I couldn't play this very well because of the old school jumping restrictions. But that's what makes me enjoy it!
When I run the game, I get seams in between the game tiles. Your screenshots don't show these seams.
I wish that I could throw rocks like this in REAL life. Innovative idea you have here. The game could definitely use some audio, and the controls seem overly complicated with all the different required keys. Find a way to streamline the interface, add some audio, and you'll have an addictive little game on your hands.
I died alone.
U__U
I ... died. Kitty ... died. Somehow I think that's better than what could've happened... lol. Very moody. Also very monotonous. 3 days would've been a perfect length with this amount of gameplay. Congrats!
Really SOLID platforming here. I dig the task system, but I wish I didn't have to backtrack so much. The water diving is fun as crap. Great game!
I LOVE your title screen / logo. But for some reason... the game is SUPER tiny in my browser. Like... less than 10 percent of the screen. Zooming in make the page scroll when I press down. :( I was able to get through 3 rooms.
My play time consisted of knocking down about 40 trees, beating on the same rock for over 2 minutes, making a boat, and then getting RED SCREEN OF DEATH'D by a water-skipping zombie troll. Not sure how to actually get stuff other than wood. I also found no way to hit the troll after the screen turned red, as I became frozen and he mauled me endlessly. :(
HOW IN THE HECK DO YOU HAVE A GOLD MEDAL RATING FOR GAME REVIEWING ALREADY?!?! RHUUUUUUMBA!!! The path from the street corner to the package store is friggin' DANGEROUS.
HOOOOOOOOGE GAME! I really dig the layering you crafted with the backgrounds. The enemies are all well designed, but I agree with other complaints listed above. The biggest downfall here is that the theme isn't well represented. Everything else is really awesome. I played this for quite a while!
ANOTHER BLOCK ROCKIN BEAT! I love the visuals and audio. GREAT interpretation of the theme. Very refreshing take. Good luck!
This is simply THE BEST GAME I'VE PLAYED IN ALL FIVE LUDUM DARE COMPETITIONS THAT I'VE ENTERED. PERIOD. The forced distance jump, the amazing random lantern strike, the graphics, the animation, the 'story', the atmosphere, the EVERYTHING. Even without sound, this is the best thing I've seen. Period. And you started late? WOW. Seriously. My vote for BEST GAME belongs to vandriver.
OH MY GOD. You just used sprites and opacity for the lighting? I was SURE that you had used the Game Maker lighting system. No wonder it look so marvelous. And your source code is HILARIOUS. Some of your variable names had me rolling. How in the world you managed to remember what the fuck some of that stuff meant... wow. I played this again today. Do you plan on expanding with music? Do you do music at all?
CONGRATS ON 17th OVERALL! This game was my vote for number one, but I'm glad to see you get some recognition for your work!
As others have said, the slow progress and quick deaths made this a bit frustrating. AMAZING visuals and sound, though. Really atmospheric shmup... whereas most are huge bullet dodge sessions. Good job!
I friggin' LOVE your art style. It does get a bit repetitive, but that's the life of a radiation man. Your HUD is hilarious and awesome at the same time. Was kinda confused about the van until I read your post about it. Like I said... ART IS AMAZING!
Very GAUNTLET-esque. The zombies were SUPER fast on my game. Almost as if it was a glitch of some kind... they were so fast that I was killed within 2 seconds each time. Is this normal?
The lighting is great, but the gameplay does get a bit stale. Also... my i7 works like CRAZY while running this game for some reason.
The collision is very spotty.. and I fell through the floor several times. The graphics are nice, but the lack of animation and the 'cutout' feel of everything really holds it back.
He's not really alone... lol
There are hundreds of other things there... closed mouth pacmans or whatever. This is hard as crap, too. I had no idea that I was being spotted. I just thought that it was glitching up or something. The stealth idea is refreshing amongst all these other games, but several things are holding it back.
I thought the thumbnail was pink cars in a green parking garage. TURNS OUT... IT'S PEOPLE! ZOMG!!!
I got a lot of black screens. Are a lot of the areas supposed to be just black screens? Were you hitting paper for the music? lol
I WANT THE MONIES BUT I HAVE TO USE THE MONIES TO PREVENT MY MURDER. THIS IS THE WAY OF LIFE. DEEP MEANING, DOCK! This is so cute and sweet... I think I got a brain cavity. It's like a sugar coma but with cute little swirly pink stuff falling out of my butt.
HILARIOUS ENDING
The gameplay is pretty much pointles... lol
But I dig the art and the overall idea.
I ended up eating about 89 chunks of sand.
I uh... I uh... I was trying to figure out of I was playing Rick Astley or not. Didn't sound like it, but I wish it was.
Got a black screen after the first level...
I just get a white screen. :(
Odd coincidence. The last 8 games I've played use similar sound effects. This is pretty fun if not limited. The game controls well enough.
Yeah there isn't much at all to this. I love killing cats as much as the next guy, but I would've liked some extra guns and some kind of strategy.
THIS IS THE SADDEST GAME I'VE EVER PLAYED... THAT STILL MANAGED TO BE HILARIOUS! Great use of theme!
MAKIN' GAMES AND PILIN' THE BODIES TO THE SKY!!!
Ended up with a score of 150. An adjustable height jump would've come in handy. It's almost NEEDED in a game like this. Rad artwork! The only thing that makes the game hard is trying to stomp on the baddies.
Everything I type gives me SYNTAX ERROR. I can't see what I'm typing on the screen.
I made it to level 175. Infinite bombs made the game easy... and the leveling seems really pointless. Gamepad support is a plus.
OH LAWD THAT TREE! Thanks for pointing out all the games in your latest blog post. Your game has a very unique feel, and I dig that items have different popups based on the order that you find them!
Yeah it has potential but there just isn't enough there, sadly. Keep going!
I even took a screenshot of the maze and cheated... still unable to reach the exit in time.
I dunno, I dig the two color scheme. I didn't have any depth or distance issues while playing. The control scheme is odd, through. Pressing down doesn't go down, bur pressing diagonal down left or right goes down. It's kind of hard to find the cat, and the enemies didn't really prove to be a threat at all. Some fine tuning here and there will easily bump this up a few notches. HOORAY FOR UNITY!!!
I couldn't keep up with all the different key commands. I agree that this could be visually improved and offered for a buck on XBLIG.
WTF - I think I had fun. My mind is too fried to remember it all. That's a compliment!
Took a sec to figure out what was what, but then it all came together. Good work!
Love the lighting! Hard as crap... but at least I can look at pretty lights while I die repeatedly. :p Kinda hard to see the coin piles on my screen. I was NOT expecting the leveling system. Good work!
HILARIOUS - I love how you all PILE UP into a wall. PROCEDURAL BONUS!!!! ... even if it does make the game impossible at times. The reaction time could be a bit faster, too. You really need SUPER TIGHT controls in a game like this. Good work!
Nice movement/camera code at work.
.
Also can't get it to run on Windows.
Great theme interpretation. I feel a lot like the human character in real life, so it was great to see what that's like from the cat's perspective!
I can't seem to get anything to actually happen. I can click things, but nothing is responding. I'll try with a different browser tomorrow.
GREAT work with the audio. Not really a game, but a great display of art!
I thought it was a white road between two gray walls. Turned out to be two doors with horrible sounds awaiting me. :(
That parallax scrolling is one of the best I've seen. Game feels empty as crap, but I dig the stars. I went all the way to -20,000x before giving up. lol
That 'music' gave me nightmares! Yeah the yellow orbs are a bit confusing. Did you have something else in mind for those?
WHOA. TURN BASED DUNGEON ESCAPE. This is realllllly awesome! I want you to keep working on this, and I want you to make it as awesome as possible. THIS IS A GREAT IDEA! Good job!
... TROLL PAINTING. YOU BASTARDS!!! This was genius. Thanks for making such a unique game!
This is fun as hell. You can make a KILLING with something like this for iOS/Android. DO IT!
OH I LAFFED
I finally figured it out and was able to make a game with 32 hours to spare. What a hoss. This is a neat idea, but the audio makes me want to split my body in half with a rusty shovel. No offense. I dig the hilarious ways to die and the overall concept. It was confusing, however, that just standing at the fridge is what refills your hunger bar. I thought I had to use the 'powerups' so I died of hunger 4 times before actually realizing what was happening.
OH MY GOD IT'S HUGE! I guess those kittens will just have to die of starvation. Pretty complete for 48 hours!
GREAT use of theme. This is a very innovative game in comparison to everything else I've played. Good job!
Yeah I agree on the audio. It neeeeeeeds something. Not innovative at all, but I do agree that the gameplay feels VERY solid. You have a good start. The walk cycle and lighting are both well done.
I had to restart the game for the flashlight to show up for some reason...
That song is super rad. The game is a bit confusing but pretty fun once you figure it out. And yeah that shell sound is EAR SPLITTINGLY LOUD!
The only challenge in this game is figuring out how to jump properly. That poor alien's legs just don't work right. :(
NICE JAMMIN' - Tell your uncle I said so. And that ship is gonna sink. It's FULL OF HOLES!!!
Whenever I play, there are mounds of mailboxes right at the start that I can't jump over because I'm going slow. There is no way to build up speed, so I can never manage to catch up to my friends.
With some audio and a few tweaks, this wouldn't feel like a 48 hour game at all. Very polished!
OH MAN IT'S SCARY WHEN YOU DROWN. Bonus MOOD score for that...
CAIN'T PLAY EET
EGAD! Backtracking for the batteries is kind of a pain. I dig the clouds at the beginning. The jumping sound also started to grate on my nerves after a bit. lol I suck at this and couldn't finish it. :(
Rad title screen. The rest is a bit too frustrating to really keep you interested long enough to find ALL THE SHIT!
I'm not really sure why this doesn't have more plays. This is very solid for LD48. I'd love to see the final version when it's ready!
UHHHHHHHH
I played this game for WAYYYY too long.
This is fun as crap, even if it is a little broken. I don't feel the theme connection all that much, but this is something that you should DEFINITELY keep working on! Being able to click on the weapon you want while IN the level would also be nice. Being able to increase FIRE RATE would be great, too. This is goooood stuff, so CONGRATS! OH... and all the little sayings and references... HILARIOUS!!! WALRUS BUTT
Your updated post compo version just proves that 48 hour prototypes can turn into GREAT things. I had a blast with it up until Level 11. WTF HAPPENED. I dig the addition of the shield / gears / etc. NICE. But I do miss the funny sayings between screens. Thanks for pointing me to the update!
I like killing cats, at least. Fun artwork and good control alternatives. BUT THE THEME MAN, THE THEME! lol Yeah I already saw your comment on the theme and how you struggled with it at first. That always sucks.
Also unable to test. :(
THAT GUN IS HELLACIOUS !!!
Not sure what the deal is with the piles of gold. I wanted to get rich while using my nuclear face melter 3000.
Neat idea. Could definitely use some audio. That stupid knight got me killed so many times!
I saw both endings. Really awesome concept. The gameplay is super simple, but I actually took the time to cut down every. single. tree. O__O
Easily the best puzzle game I've seen come out of this LD. Very good job. The music is great and you keep adding layers to the core gameplay. It starts off 'normal' and 'nothing special' and then WHAM it kicks you in the teeth with innovation. NEEDS MORE PLAYS AND VOTES!!!
The game window seems to be cut off on all 4 sides. I can't get through the first part of the game because I can't tell with the pits are. I really dig the art style, though. I'd love to break this open and see exactly how you accomplished that look.
OK I grabbed the source and was able to play it without the sides being cut off. WEIRD. OMG THE RAPTORS!!!
Nice lil puzzler!
Couldn't get it to work :(
Poor lil' guy... :(
I really want to play this, but the game looks nothing like the screenshots. I fall out of the sky and land in a big white area. I can pull the slot machine when I'm falling, but not after landing... and then when I walk into the endless white, I see bits of road floating in the sky...
Not really picking up the theme here... and this is pretty much just a standard shmup... but BYGOLLY 48 HOURS AND YOU HAVE RAD ART AND AUDIO! Good work. I suck at shmups, though.
AW MAN. Some cheap kill came out of nowhere and ruined my fun. :( I dig the flashlight system you have here. How exactly did you handle that part of the lighting in Game Maker? Also, I encountered a glitch where turning off the flashlight sometimes results in not being able to move my character. I dig the sounds/music/aesthetics. The gameplay needs some tweaks, of course, but this is still really good. Keep working on this!
WAAAAAAAAAAAAA HOOHOOHOOHOOEY
HUG ME LOVE ME - WHAM WHAM ATOMIC BOMB
Hilarious! The walk animation reminds me of Canadians.
LAFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF. This was very refreshing. Thanks for making this!
I couldn't even pass the second stage. Maybe it's the medicine I just took... but I feel completely stupid right now.
Had me rolling. Loved this!
Great visuals, but it needed some ambient sound/music to break up the repeating sfx. It's a bit simple, but there are lots of ways to expand this. You should keep working on it!
THIS IS IMPOSSIBLE. I command you to show me proof that this can be accomplished. lol
Neat idea... but it's harder than anything else I've ever played. EVER.
One of the best theme interpretations I've seen thus far. Good work with the audio, too. With some solid visuals and some obvious balancing/fun tweaks... this could be REALLY good. Nice job!
The web version was acting up so I had to download the Windows version. This could definitely be expanded and would be very fun. Needs more sauce on the chicken as of right now, though.
Beautiful aesthetics and sound. The gameplay fell short, but you have a great base to expand upon.
DANG THIS IS HARD! Your post mortem is very honest and insightful. Congrats on your first Ludum Dare!
OK. This is a great idea. Please keep working on this. Right now it feels unbalanced. The regular gun is basically pointless except for shooting the red boxes. The powerups don't last long enough, either. I had this thing literally down to just a few boxes and couldn't friggin' hit 'em to save my life! But yeah... great innovation, nice visuals, and really fun to play. I don't see the theme connection, though.
Won't start for me :(
Huge boost for gamepad support! I totally dig the chair/table mechanic, but those dogs can GO TO HELL!!! Hilarious little game with a unique twist. Keep working on this!
I AGREE WITH THE SKIFREE COMMENT! Yeah, the deaths are pretty much immediate. I upgraded to the bow and DEEEEPLY REGRETTED IT. lol
lol
No, it was a good LOL. The voice cracks me up every time.
And... I must suck because I can't seem to make a fishing pole at all. Fun little game with lots of charm! This was refreshing.
I'm just going to give a score for community because I can't seem to get this to run for some reason. I'm having a lot of issues with Java games and it's pissing me off because I've updated everything. :(
OH MAN THIS REMINDS ME OF FRIDGE SHOPPING ON LABOR DAY WEEKEND! BOOM PRICE DROP BOOM FREE UPGRADE BOOM WALLET DEATH! Hilarious game, noffle.
YIKES THIS IS HARD. Your post mortem is brutally honest. Congrats on your first LD!
It took forever to walk around and pick up those eggs. I saw tons of crash-landed 'birds' as well. Kinda funny. The world was interesting too look at, but it eventually felt very bare.
THAT WAS SO CONFUSING. In a good way, I guess. The ending was definitely unexpected. Pretty good art, but it was basically just walk from point a to point b.
Link is dead.
OH WOW. I'm glad I came back to this. This is really fun to play! Good idea and your interpretation of the theme is brilliant!
I really dig the crayon art and the 'mind of a child' theme. Great interpretation of 'ALONE' ! But DANG this is hard. lol
This game is made of ONIONS. I think jeffz said it best with "BLEAK."
THIS IS SO UNINTENTIONALLY HILARIOUS! The poster... the non functional title screen... the one room walk-a-thon... and then BOOM. Sucks that you didn't get to finish but this really brightened up my night. Thanks!
The lighting makes me want to feel alone, but the music makes me wanna bust a move. I dig the shells effect... and you have more enemy types than I imaged there would be. It needs some sfx, though. Congrats on actually making a game in 48 hours!
There isn't really any gameplay here... just walk from point A to point B and experience the 'story'. That's not a bad thing, of course, but with something like that... you really need a good payoff at the end. There wasn't anything at the end that satisfied me after all that walking. The mood and visuals work well with the theme, though. Good work for 48 hrs!
"Failed to load" on start.
:(
I dig the music... but the anxiety thing happens way too quick to be able to explore and get the notes. AND LOL AT THE CRAZY ASS STORYLINE!
lol
I liked this one... it was refreshing.
I love the way the dog AI works. Good stuff.
Runs fine for me!
Very unique way to play a platformer. Not really feeling the theme too much, though.
THIS. IS. AMAZING. Sooooo upset that there is no true ending yet. Please update us when this is finalized. BRILLIANT IDEA. WONDERFUL SPRITING. AND THE MUSIC MAH GAWWWD. Best use of theme thus far.
All I get is a guy on a black screen with yellow balls falling out of his mouth.
The game runs at about 7,000 fps on my machine. I was able to teleport straight to the goal on almost every level. Got stuck in the ceiling on a level with a ton of lava. :(
Yeah we really need an exe. We're begging to rate your game here!!!
I like that the guy says different stuff when you repeat the stage. Great physics!
Reminds me of LittleBigPlanet. The controls (Windows) are a bit awkward, and the physics can be a bit unforgiving. I spent way too much time stacking boxes to reach the flower like your picture shows... but nothing happened. The breaking bridge was a nice surprise.
Nice interpretation of the theme. This was a refreshing break after playing a lot of similar games. The RACE AGAINST YOUR BEST LAP THUS FAR ghost is really awesome and the 'population' mechanic is very interesting. Good work!
OH GOD THE BIIIIIIRDS!!! That last stretch before the final where you have to scale the side of the wall with the birds chasing you... OH GOD NIGHTMARES!!! lol The end was funny because I thought he just tripped...
Solid platforming action. I found the ... uh... THING or whatever behind the boxes. I dig the different weapons but I'm not so crazy about not being able to just cycle through them quickly. Needs some music or something. That jumping sound begins to get annoying after a while.
I finally got the hang of it but after falling to my death 3 times in a row on the final section of the second screen... I had to stop. :( The song is pretty good, actually.
STUPID HUG MONSTER! LEAVE ME ALONE!!! He hugs with such VIOLENCE. This was pretty fun!
It took a while to figure it out, but I suck at card games... so... yeah. This was a refreshing change from the other games!
Also can't get this to run.
Congrats on finishing! The first time this game loaded... the screen was nearly 100 percent black. I could still see some basic outlines of the white text. I refreshed and it fixed it. Odd.
I ran into several invisible walls while playing. Was this intentional? Also, the NO GOING BACK mechanic is pretty unique, but I eventually ran out of checkpoints. I went for a loooooong time without seeing another. I die and had to go back to a point waaaay before where I was and I had to stop playing.
Yeah I got stuck in the same spot as well. Spent a good minute and a half trying to select CONTROLS from the main menu. :(
Also cannot play.
THIS. IS. ADDICTIVE. Three difficulty levels each with their own 'clear' markers... tons of levels... the unique leaf growing mechanic... the checkpoints... the OH MY GAWD HILARITY. This is an amazing entry. CONGRATULATIONS!
I REALLY dig the oil/fire combo and the strategy that you have to use on some of the fights. The controls could be a bit more friendly for switching between abilities, but this is still pretty fun. Keep working on this!
Same error :(
It says PRESS SPACE TO PLAY but space does nothing. :(
Won't start
:(
You should've linked to the 100 hour version of that video...
I suck at this. Also HUGE LOL on my first attempt, as the ship just fell at freefall speed straight to the ground, as I didn't know I was playing yet.
Can't play :(
A gameplay video would help in cases like this.
GENIUS!!! I love the concept of this little puzzle game. GREAT WORK!
I'm not totally sold on the 'alone' theme here... but the core gameplay is solid. You could easily add on to this and make it something special.
I've seen a ton of space shooters in this LD, and I'm not sure why. The 'alone' theme doesn't really make me think of a ship fighting against waves and waves of enemies, but that's just me picking on you after a marathon session of rating games. I dig the 'retro but not' graphic style and the control scheme is definitely different from other space shooters.
Nice art style. I was also a bit confused by how it all wrapped up. This is probably the best Unity game I've seen thus far.
Yeah the control setup is weird, and it's a bit awkward to play. The visual style works, though. It could certainly use some audio, but it seems like you did get a decent amount of stuff done in 48 hours.
I could really use a sandwich
That thing haunts my dreams now. I could never escape. :(
This could definitely benefit from some extra additions... but it IS super tense.
I suck at this in real life, too... so I wasn't too sad when I lost. Nice interpretation of the the theme!
Hilarious sounds and a nice, frumpy spaceman. It's hard as crap, though. Limited movement and slow speed = sure death when you hit a dead end.
Waitaminnit... that block ain't alone. His world is nothing BUT blocks! I saw a rad glitch where a zombie flew across the screen at warp speed and super deathed me.
I started playing... and thought... OH ANOTHER PLATFORMER YAY. Then BOOM with the powers and BLAM with the text listing the 3 things... lol. OUT OF NOWHERE. Then WHAMMO scenery change then BOOM boss fight!
Yup. Source only kills it.
OOOH Awesome! Reminds me of the fun times I had with Tetris Attack back in the 16-bit era. This is a great puzzle game and a NICE interpretation of the the theme!
Rad minimap
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
This was fun. And hilarious.
THEM ZOMBIES BE GIVIN' ME SASS
You shoulda but some BLUES in it. And not just the color.
There's some nifty innovation going on in here... Red Warrior needs sound badly.
The walk sound plays even when you're jumping lol. I killed my zombie brethren. Over and over for days.
Over 1,000 steps twice around the board... and I didn't find the 'points'. TROLLED ME!
All I can see is grey and black. The levels aren't loading for some reason...
Certainly not my kind of game, but the art is solid. I'll pass this along to my friends that dig this sort of thing.
Rad artwork! So much better than just straight-up text.
I got to 56. I really dig the unique elements here... the angled shots, the musical impacts, and the auto fire rate. With some more polish, this could be SUPER popular, especially on mobile devices. GET TO WORK AND MAKE SOME MONEY!
UGH SO HARD! But fun. BUT HARD. But fun.
Good work!
Yeah, the intro took forever... almost to the point that I thought that's all the game was about. The only clue I had was the photo you use don the game page that shows the monster. But yeah, needs sound to be super rad, but MAN this has a great mood. I love how it all ends, even if you gotta wait a while to get to the action. Great work!
Great use of theme! It gets a bit repetitive and could use some music, but this game is really unique. Good work!
Very great job on the music. Some of the best I've heard in any LD game. I fell down during Treeday and did not respawn properly. I was stuck under the map and could not jump. Great job for 72 hours!
Hey... this is rad. It seems super complicated at first, but it really isn't. The music is PERFECT and the way the tiles jump around... OH MAN! So much charm in this little game. AMAZING JOB!
THE SCALE OF THIS GAME... OH MY GOD. The ending sequence is pure genius. Amazing use of the theme... and SUPERB execution!
Solid platformer with a great use of theme! Good job!
Holy crap. With audio, this would be so perfect. It's already the most fun I've had with a Ludum Dare game in forever. Some rad music and sfx would put it over the top. Great, great, great, great, GREEEAAAT job!
THIS IS FRIGGIN AMAZING! This is probably my favorite LD23 game, and I didn't even get to play it until after the compo was over... GREAT JOB! Everything about it is absolutely perfect. Seriously.
I wish I could run this. It looks rad.
This is a really rad idea that needs to be continued. Make a full game and sell it on mobile. I'd buy it.
Great use of theme! I dig the visuals and the music fits the mood. Great work!
I had to switch browsers a few times until I found one that liked your game. :p
I dig the limited colors!
Totally diggin' the ambient audio in here... WOW. This game put me in a very different mood, and I DIG IT!
I love the visual style. The music is rad, and the main character is charming. Good work! The collision is rough around the edges, but everything else is really well done.
Pretty dang funny. Good job on the single screenshot on this page... really sets you up for the reveal. Nice job!
That's a crappy thing to say.
The game won because it won. That's how the voting system works. The game has solid audio, an amazing use of theme, it's fun as crap, and the visuals work best for the kind of zooming mechanic that's been implemented.
It's a very very solid game in every category, so it deserves high marks in overall.
My comment was meant for Suese. Sorry.
Very moody little game with some unique artwork and great music. The gameplay itself can be a bit frustrating, as it took me 20 tries to get a few of the items. The ending was quite unexpected. Good job.
SO RAD! Needs audio to be perfect... unless there IS audio... but it doesn't play in Firefox or Opera.
One of my faves. More of an experience than a 'game'... but it's a really good one. Great job! Great use of theme and mood.
This is beautiful. I could play a game like this all day long. The music is also RAD. This is one of my faves. THANK YOU FOR THIS!
Getting an error when I try to access the site.
Super rad gameplay with the innovative teleportation mechanic, but the theme is lost from your story to the actual game itself. Good job!
Pacifist Games, I was worried that the game was too easy, as I was able to complete it 3 times in a row without even taking a single hit. I guess that's the problem with limited playtesting... you work so close with the game and it's hard to get a grasp of how it feels to a new player. I also play most PC games with a joystick and joy2key, using the analog stick as the mouse cursor.
The randomness of the stars can make or break the difficulty of a wave. Sometimes you won't get lucky, then you'll get 8 in a row with little effort. Thanks for playing and commenting!
haslettj, did you play story or sandbox? Sandbox mode is basically my debug mode. Story is where you go through the waves of enemies and rebuild between waves.
Evil Sandwich Studios, thanks! Yeah, the delete terrain option was left over from sandbox/debug mode, but I left it in story as a little 'joke'.
I ended up dropping two gameplay features halfway through the second day... one of them being a starshine attractor. You had a little energy bar that would slowly regenerate... holding down a button would emit an aura that would pull the starshines to you. I felt that it made the game too easy, but maybe I shoulda left it in. :(
OH WELL
Thanks for the plays and comments! I'll be getting to your games asap.
Another feature that didn't make the deadline was a way to skip to the next wave when you're done building. And yeah, it seems as though my games always end up with a super slow pace. I'll keep that in mind next time... I'll try to make something with a bit more "GET UP AND GO". Thanks, everyone!
I don't know how much more I will extend the game... as I usually leave my LD48 games the way they are, but I'm working on a version that will allow everyone to at least FINISH the game. And thanks for the kind words!
For anyone that rates and comments, I'll be playing your games first before any others. I have a backlog, but I'll get to 'em all.
Thank you, ol' friend! I still haven't played yours, but it's in my next batch. I thought about subtitles, but I didn't really build that sequence to be very friendly with changes. I'm glad you were able to finish it! I like the idea of starting over at he halfway mark, but then I'll have to figure out how to save the island state at that point before the addition building and destruction, and I didn't really account for that when I built the game. It would take a lot of extra effort, so I think I'll just allow infinite respawns in the post-compo version so people can get to the end if they want.
Great work! Perfect from top to bottom!
WHOA MAN! So pretty! Needs music BADLY. The game gets really hectic and fun... and I dig the unique concepts you have going on. Keep working on this one! I'd love to play a final version. GREAT WORK!
This is hard as crap, but the changing music and the progression is REALLY genius. The songs are great, and the visuals are cute and tiny. Good work!
I dig the RED SCREEN effect you got going on. It could use some music to really push the experience along, too. Not really sure about the theme connection, but not too bad for 6 hours.
Windows download link broken? I keep getting an error.
One of my favorite games of any LD. Really awesome work!
I dig the visuals! Needs some music, as the game is incredibly charming. Maybe make two or three slightly different jumps sounds and have them chosen at random each time. Makes it easier on the ears. Good lil' game!
Ugh this sucks so hard without a mouse. My wireless mouse died, so I had to use this crappy little pad that I never use. Totally not a knock against your game, just an observation from me. Rad song, rad idea, rad game! Good work!
OK... so at first I was confused about the theme. Then it all came together wonderfully. GREAT INTERPRETATION! The animations oh mah GAWD the cuteness factor is off the charts. The little umbrella... ugh. I just wanted to squeeze him... whatever he is. Needs audio. A great song would really tie this together.
I LOVE LUDUM DARE, TOO!
Good use of the 'tiny' theme with the shrinking and hazzards!
It left me wanting more, which is good. You could definitely expand on this and end up with a really rad game!
Really rad! But the other guys can use the buildings I construct? Seemed a bit odd. Other than that, it was incredibly fun and refreshing. Great job!
Great mood and atmosphere... and nice use of theme!
VERY innovative approach to the theme! I dig the concept, but I'm not sure that it actually translates well into a 'fun' game. You could keep tweaking this to find the sweet spot, though.
Rad little game with perfect audio. Having jump on 'w' would've really helped out. Great work.
OH LAWD. This was great!
Not really sure how this fits the theme... but the gameplay is neat. Needs some music or better sound effects to complete the package.
I dig your use of GM particles. The ship at the start with the flames turning to blue... and the little firefly. Nice touches! I played through to the end. Great lil game!
OH MAN this is beautiful. The sound is superb as well. Too bad it only lasts like a minute and a half, though. Decided to jump to this game based on your excellent post mortem.
Pretty dang good all around! Good work!
Hi.
BEEF WARRRR
I always look for your games, and I'm never let down.
This shit is amazing!
CONGRATS ON THE WIN
Really crisp and smoooooooth visuals! The gameplay gets repetitive quickly, but your aesthetics are certainly appealing!
This just kept getting better and better. At first I thought it needed a jump button, but now I'm convinced that it doesn't. Rad progression, rad art, and the music is NOT awful! Loved this. Lots of fun!
Yeah, slow down the pace a bit and fix the the control scheme, I say. Let us rotate the world with the move and move the guy with keys. It would be fun to scoot around and spin the world while we transition from side to side. Great use of theme and an interesting concept!
The game crashes whenever I kill an alien? Urgh... I really wanted to play it, too. :(
LOL WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?! I love the absurdity of the entire thing... hilarious. Good job!
Great mood...and that song is amazing. The text was fun to read, but the gameplay was a bit hard to follow at first. Great use of theme!
Easily one of the best games I've ever seen come out of LD. Your core idea is PHENOMENAL... and you've got a great start. Keep going! This could be HUGE if you can pull it all together just right. LOVE IT!
I wasn't expecting the little growing mechanic... or the stomp to shrink mechanic. Neat stuff! I wish you would've been able to stay closer to the theme like your original idea. Sounds like it would've been rad!
BOINK
OWNCH
BOINK
OWNCH
BOINK
OWNCH
I couldn't save my damn friends :(
Funny game!
Um. WHAT?
I wish I would've seen this during the compo. GENIUS!!!
It doesn't seem to work on any browsers that I have installed. Or maybe this is how the game is SUPPOSED to be? It feels broken and confusing in this state, but I'm not going to download and install new browsers just to play one game.
The controls felt nearly perfect once I loaded my character down with fruit. It's just too fast by default, causing me to skip over the ONE tile I needed to be on to pick up or drop or enter. The title screen music is SO GOOD! I really dig the concept, and it would be nice to see the world expanded with some more life... like others buzzing around and working underground and such. The cats are like LASER BEAMS, though! You can't outrun them at all. Great use of theme as well.
Now that song is stuck in my head!!! doot doot doodadooda doot dooo!! Rad game!
Great game overall, but I'm not feelin' the theme too much. Great level design and puzzles, and your aesthetics are incredibly pleasing. Good work!
WOW this is tiny... lol. I feel like this entire game could be taking place on the tip of my nose. ELFS LOVE CABBAGE. A LOT!
This is genius. Just plain genius. I love this and would love to see a more polished version. You could make a killing on mobile devices with something like this.
Lots of content here... the different worlds and tiles... the world map... the rock pushing/lazer shooting/fog of war/etc. Good job!
This looks SO GOOD in motion. The screenshots don't really do it justice. Needs music... and KUDOS on pulling this off with GM. Great work!
She shooting felt a bit awkward, but the character movement is solid. I couldn't hear any audio, either. HUGE world, though... with tiny things in it.
Loving all the clueless comments lol!!!!!!
OK so this is brutally awesome on every level. The fact that this is a 48 hour game is ASTOUNDING. Everything about this is stellar. Seriously. One of the best I've ever seen and I've been doing this for a while. It's tightly woven together. The aesthetic is very even throughout. The random generation and palette changes are refreshing. The gameplay is fun and you have a reason to keep going ... to unlock new fetishes. It IS a bit like Retro City Rampage, which is the only 'drawback' but really... how can that be a drawback? It's hilarious, fun to play, awesomely addicting, and a feast for the eyes. PERFECTION!
OH AND I FORGOT TO ADD... the random collision of traffic is the funniest thing I've seen in forever. The randomness creates great moments that you just can't recreate with a script. The beauty of how the randomness flows together with the visual style is what makes this so memorable. OK I'll stop slobbering all over this and go play something else for a bit. :)
I really love the way the stained glass contrasts with the rest of the textures. It almost glows right off of the screen. The jumping controls need some work. The platforming physics in general just feel a bit awkward. The level looks nice, but there are some spots where getting hit is a certainty.
I totally had this eerie little Halloween-type spooky theme in my head while playing this! The pacing is a bit slow, but it is rewarding to get the better weapons.
Very interesting concept. The web version ran fine for me. I was expecting more crustaceans, though. :p
Awesome little game with a rad art style and nice progression. It's not too easy and not too hard. Music is rad and the game controls perfectly. Very nice work... and not just for 48 hours. You should be happy!
Awesome graphics and great pacing. The scale of the characters seems odd, though... the logs on that fire must be HUUUUUUUUGE! haha
As a person that can't whistle, I am grateful for the gameplay video as an example. Great innovation here, but the theme is definitely absent. Totally rad idea, though. And hilarious! And it looks pretty good, too!
UGH. I feel like crap, now! I had options to "do nothing" but I was so curious to see what would happen I just kept on being a jerk. That whole back and forth kinda of thing in my head made me feel really uneasy about all of it. You did a good job getting me to feel true emotions, and that's not too easy with a simple 48 hour game. The art is beautiful as usual!
Yeah, I don't think it's working right. The demon just charges ahead at full speed very early on and there's no reason to even keep running. Nice twist on the 'runner' game, though. The animation is very appealing as well.
AWESOME! Needs audio, though. The minimalist approach is nice and the execution is really perfect. I love the art. LOVE IT, I SAY. Great job!
I love the little dino at the keyboard! This is so gorgeous, but it's a bit easy to beat once you get a few huge ships on the screen. Needs some rockin tunes and better sound effects to be STELLAR, but as of right now it's really friggin' solid. GREAT WORK!!!
Seems like a really innovative idea but I'm not sure what you really trying to go for. Sorry that you couldn't finish it. I would've enjoyed seeing where this was headed! Great art style!
Wow. This was SO much fun. SO ADDICTIVE. Great visuals and awesome innovation. I didn't feel much of a theme connection throughout but DAMN this game is fun. I want a full version with music, SFX, and a level editor.
Dick.
This is a really awesome take on the theme. The mood and atmosphere created by the slow pace and the music puts you in a trance. This was a very refreshing experience. Thanks for suggesting it in the chat! The virus sometimes doesn't act as a full group, and a large chunk becomes unresponsive to the mouse until after a bunch of them get wiped out. My suggestions: Fix that and make the first few waves go by a bit faster (less cells, maybe) to get the player into a decent pace.
WOW. I had no idea what the hell I was doin', but I had fun doin' it. The graphics really POP off of the screen. I dig it. Kinda hard to control, but that's part of the charm. Just needs a funky song to fill the void.
This is hilarious. Does it just go on forever? I got to the point where you have to be completely perfect every single time or you lose, so I'm guessing that's either the last level or it just ramps up in difficulty into infinity. Nice timing, too. Games like this with questionable timing are never fun, but you nailed it.
Totally amazing visuals and mood set by this game. It's a little slow but you were definitely able to craft a game that stands out. The theme feels a bit lost in the gameplay and progression. Easily one of the better looking games I've played.
Great fun with a very nice ending!
Oh man, I wish I had someone here right now to try this. The controls are super weird but it's workable. I love the over-the-top particle death and the various characters with different projectiles. Didn't expect to play a fighter in this LD... especially one with this innovative hook mechanic. RAD STUFF!
GAH!!! Thanks for letting me know. I think it was an audio error. I re-compressed the audio files so now the EXE is half as big as before. I tested it and it seems to be working on my desktop and laptop, but let me know if the problem continues.
I'm still trying to get a web version ready but it isn't going so well. :(
Yeah, that's odd. Some people get the crash. Some don't. ARGGG! The version you're downloading now should be about 9MB. It was originally 22MB before I re-compressed the audio files in an attempt to fix the crashes. I guess it didn't fix it. Thanks for trying, everyone!
Yeah that last part was something that got cut due to time limits. Your 'sword' breaks. There's a slight animation there that shows it kind of sparking but I didn't have time to make it more obvious. I also had a much more elaborate intro and outro sequence planned ala ZUNZANDA, but that also got cut. Thanks for the play and comment!
I'm trying to play and rate the games of those that play and comment on mine first, so I'll get to yours soooon.
Thanks! Glad to hear from you again.
There are four ranks: Villain, Hero, Perfect Hero, and 'nothing'
There are four medals: Killer, Collector, Defender, and Feeder
The slimes contain the 'cure' because the cure is their food source. When a small slime eats a cure, they grow into a large slime. This is one of those things that you rarely see, but there are areas with large concentrations of the small slimes with cures nearby so there's a greater chance of seeing it there. It was definitely meant to be a rare occurrence, which is why the last medal is also so rare. If this happens 3 times, you get the final medal.
I'm gonna post all this and much more in a post-mortem very soon, which I will link to within the game info above.
WOW. I never thought I'd see Tetris mixed with a bullet hell shmup before. It needs some fine-tuning to make it really fun, but the potential is there for something really great. I really appreciate the attention to innovation, here. Good job!
I had no idea how to start it at first and the green flag on the page really confused me because it seems to change the layout and i thought that was part of the game like an idiot. Kept getting caught in loops where my death repeated and word bubbles covered up the entire screen. Very odd little game but somehow very intriguing.
HAHAHA awesome ending! I was able to play with a gamepad and it was much easier. Definitely suited for a controller and not a keyboard. Art is great, music is great, humor is great. The last part is hard as hell, though because you're freaking out so much. But yeah... REALLY SOLID!
Very tough game but I really appreciate gamepad support! Enemies that hang out around the edge of the screen transition areas are tough to battle because you end up going to the other areas. Those knights are in my nightmares forever!
HILARIOUS! "1 man was fired" at the end had me laughing hard. Very fun game with a nice sense of progression. Going from area to area not knowing what will come next is a great feeling. You did a good job of making me want to keep going. It was VERY easy, though. That's the only issue. Oh, other than that song. Man, that song. It will haunt me in my dreams. GREAT JOB!
LOL - awesome. The ending is so perfect. The laugh, the note that plays... UGH. So good. Great innovation here.
This game is BEAUTIFUL! Too bad that the audio doesn't really count for the compo because it's a great tune. Some SFX blended in would be even more awesome. I was able to get about 1,500 but I know I can do better! GREAT JOB!
Needs hilarious audio to really make it special. Hilarious concept and theme interpretation. But I gotta wonder.... where's the goddamn four lane highway cutting through a forest that's full of old ladies, little school girls, and ABANDONED BABY STROLLERS all moving in the same direction????!!!!
OH MAN. One of my favorite games. This is so amazing. Everything about it is brilliant. The ending when you get game over is genius. UGH. I knew this kid growing up. AMAZING WORK!!!
OH MAN! HILARIOUS! AAAHHHHAHAHAHAHAHA! I had lots of fun with this. I just expected the first level to be it but then it opened up and kept going and going and getting better! Good job! I had a blast playing this one.
Awesome retro style. Great pacing and progression with the levels. My one suggestion is to make the beam a bit longer.
Nice innovative gameplay! The instructions and tips screens were very well done. The game felt a bit dark, but I did appreciate the random generation.
Awesomely innovative! And the visual style is soooo charming. I see some of the screenshots have different camera angles. I didn't notice these while playing, but it would've been nice to show off more of the 'paper cutout' style. Like maybe have it broken down into 'waves' and after each wave you get a different camera view around the area while some dialogue plays. Awesome looking and unique game that's fun to play! GOOD LUCK IN THE JAM!
I have the same issue as Dir3kt, unfortunately. :(
I really wanted to play it. I'm sorry you're having trouble getting this to work for everyone. I'm having a similar problem with mine.
WOW. Beautiful art. Great idea with the theme for 2 player. The control scheme is a bit odd. Or maybe I just need a diagram for how to position my fingers to move with A/D and jump with Shift and shoot with X/Z. Could work well with A/D to move and W to jump with spacebar being shoot. The art is FANTASTIC. Simply amazing. I'd love to play a 'complete' version of this with maybe a custom controls option. Good work!
AWESOME! Loved the progression and the COOOOLNESS METER expanding as you become more evil in the mirror. Really hilarious. Lots of variations in gameplay, and an amazing interpretation of the theme. GREAT WORK ALL AROUND!
Amazing atmosphere and visuals. The ambient sound is also very pleasing. I didn't really know what was going on or how it was tied to the theme, but the confusion of it all made it very interesting.
Seriously needs sound to complete the package because your graphics are REALLY charming. With a few tweaks and some balancing, this could be AWESOMELY addicting.
Awesome graphics and animations. This is a GameMaker game but it feels almost like a great little Flash game that you'd see on NewGrounds or something. Great fast paced action. Gameplay is a little tough to get the hang of, but it works fine after you get used to it. Also, nobody else seems to have mentioned it, so I guess I'll do it: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/rules/
The music you used is fine for the Jam but not for the Compo. A way around this would be to either enter the Jam or upload two versions for the Compo... one without music for judging, and one with music for casual enjoyment.
LOVE THE CLAY MODELS! The game has tons of charm but unfortunately not enough 'game'. Thanks for doing something unique!
Why would you put the attack key right on top of the movement keys? Most games use WASD and mouse or arrow keys and keys on the left. This made an already tough game even more difficult. I had fun playing it, though... even just to see the next fight and read the little intro lines. FSM WAS A BASTARD!!!
OK. I just dropped anvils on goats for like 6 minutes. I agree with the first comment. VERY STRANGELY ADDICTIVE. I could do this all day but I won't. Because that would make me a very scary person. GREAT WORK FOR 3 HOURS!
I love this! Very awesome mood and atmosphere. Going from outside to inside seriously feels like you're leaving the freezing darkness and entering a cozy space. Really good job, guys!
Best game over screen ever. Great art and great idea, but the gameplay is realllllly hard to enjoy. Bonus points for JZIGGY
This is a reaaaallly awesome idea. A game like this needs 2 things: Challenging AI and tons of options. You're well on your way to making something really fun. As of right now, it's a bit easy and you only have two block types. But what else do you expect for 48 hours, right? The main character has a cool and interesting design, but the computer player is a bit bland by comparison. Needs some music and better sound effects, and this is the type of game that could sell really well on Android/iOS. A game that gives you a platformer in reverse so you don't have to worry about twitch controls on a touch-screen phone. I'd buy it! GREAT WORK!
Yeah I have two issues. One, not being able to shoot up or down... and two... hacking up the survivors should give a health recharge. Other than that, this is really rad. The music is pumping. Some may say the graphics were simple or whatever, but they fit the style very well. Almost like a trash punk kinda environment. I dig the door opening mechanic, but I certainly miss having sound effects. I wasn't able to beat it, but I'll keep trying! Good job!
Got 9274
Oddly addicting little game. Great music and very tight controls. Fresh theme interpretation and a nice challenge. Great job!
I dig that music. Very moody. It would be nice to see the kill animation rather than just have them die and vanish. Teleporting around could also use some visualizations other than a quick jump. I like the idea of stalking around and using fear, and the flashlights were a great touch.
OH MAN, this should really be expanded. Fix the font issue and make it possible to play entirely with the mouse. Going back and forth between 1 and Enter is a bit tedious. I love the contrast between the dank, dirty pits and the swanky highrise office! This game is very charming and is a refreshing take on the theme. Congrats!
Great music, animation, and boss design and a great concept overall... but it falls short in a few ways. For one, there is no strategy required at all. Just run back and forth along the bottom and spam/alternate both attacks and you will win before your health even hits the halfway mark. Two, the soldier AI is very limited. Most bosses in games like this have a pattern that repeats and the players have to learn the pattern. The boss attacks are highly powerful and the boss can take tons of damage. This is the trade. Once the player can learn the pattern, then it doesn't matter how much damage the boss attacks do. A great way to handle the gameplay would be to limit the movement of the boss to commands instead of free control. For example, you'd have a selection of 5 or 6 movement types and maybe 3 to 4 attack types. Instead of moving freely, you choose a movement type (like jumping from block 1 to block 3 with a midair spin) and attack type (attack before jumping, while jumping, or after landing) and then repeat this process to try and confuse the AI. The AI would have to be able to 'learn' certain parts of the attack process making certain combinations nearly useless at some point, forcing the boss to mix it up. But that's just a quick suggestion. Whether or not something like that is possible during this short compo is another thing entirely. :p
Great style and awesome concept. I love the animations. The turret doesn't seem to do any damage. And I really love the mood set by the images and music, but the music you used unfortunately isn't allowed in the 48 hour compo. This would be fine for a jam entry, though. Just an FYI.
Managed to get up to 8 kills but I seriously can't seem to get any more. 4 per pit. I'm assuming we can't get kills from the goat? Love the style but yeah it needs some balancing. Consider a simple first level with only 1 kill required. Then 2. Then 3. Etc. Slowly introduce the ways to kill the knight to the player. The skill shouldn't be figuring out exactly how you CAN place them, but placing them correctly fast enough. Great idea, though!
Firing a chainsaw with a crossbow? Wicked. Was a bit confused about the auto hop unless the guy is trying to blend in with the bunnies by acting like them. Hilarious little game.
I have money and health but I never spend money and I never lose health! lol
Rad little song you got there... and the brick shooting was quite interesting.
Great idea, but I kinda wish the game movement wasn't grid based. I dig the mood set by the game, but that's mostly from the music which unfortunately doesn't 'count'. The idea of a bad version of Santa running around burning gifts is hilarious. Great use of theme and CHRISTMAS SPIRIT :D
Awesome eating animation! Great visual style as well.
I love the title screen and name of the game. The gameplay could use some tuning up, and the way the text wraps around is a bit confusing at first. I think I found a glitch, though. I was told I got money but I stayed at $0. Could no longer get milk, either.
RadMars logo is rad. Loved just about everything about this. The red hearts were very bizarre. Couldn't understand why some seemed to die with two shots and others took a million. Strong attack didn't seem to hurt more, just had more knockback. Great sprites, nice audio, and great interpretation of theme! SOLID WORK!
Really awesome start. Keep working on it!
So much friggin innovation! I can't handle it. Yeah the controls are a bit awkward and I don't know why. Maybe it's because we can't fully control the dude but we can fully control the camera? I don't know how to explain it. It just takes a lot of time to get used to. Great job on the models and the overall concept is hilarious. Great work!
Nice innovation and unique theme interpretation. The graphics are pleasing but the lack of sound effects is disappointing. Could've used some hilarious splat sounds or mooooos or something. Collision with the blocks seemed a bit suspect at times, but a slight bit of tuning can fix that. Good work!
WHOA MAN!!!!! AAAAHHHHHHH!!! I can't get over how rad this is! I saw the screenshot and was NOT expecting it to be this fun. This friggin' game is a blast. The control scheme is a bit hard to get used to with the X holding, but I eventually made that stupid goody two shoes James Birdhunter go back to hell where he belongs! GREAT FRIGGIN' JOB!
Yeah now I see why you wanted us to zoooom in. My huge monitor made it nearly impossible at the default size. The doves were like microscopic little things! Great and hilarious music and sound effects. The gameplay is a bit bare, but you have a decent start to a new type of TD.
Amazing graphics! Made it to 177. Could certainly use audio to tie it all together. Decent challenge and a nice, quirky interpretation of the theme.
That king is a HOSS. Several giant hammers to the face and flaming boulders to the spine and he's still running strong! This game really needs some audio variation to let you really sink into it. As it is now, the audio grates on your nerves and kinda pulls you out. But there are tons of nice things here... the physics, the leaderboads, the fun factor, the characters. Good stuff!
Amazing art style and animation. PERFECT theme interpretation by making the player the villain and not the character itself. Great game over screen with that being the victory of the avatar and the loss of the player. Wonderful job all around!
Wonderful looking game with a fresh take on the theme and very solid gameplay. One of my favorites from LD25! Make a kickass song and it'll be even more rad.
Not bad for a first time pixel-arter! I love how the first time I got to the top that dude just killed the absolute shit out of me before I even knew what was going on. It took me another three tries before I could finally murder him back, but I DID! I MURDERED HIM BACK!
Awesomely innovative puzzle game! Needs some audio to seal the deal, though. I can imagine grumbling passengers and screaming babies and... UGH. It's making me stressed out just thinking about it...
OHHHHHHHHH MAN. This is amazing. I literally cracked a smile once I 'got' it and the sidewalk started ripping up chunk by chunk. And then I was cackling with laughter once I hit FULLLL POWAAAAA and the houses started to crumble. Great job!!!
OK... SO... THIS IS AWESOME.
The 'puppet on a stick' art style is freakin' astounding. Well animated and hilariously presented. I love it. The attacking is a bit hard to understand and it needs some very obvious sound effects for cues and such. But yeah... awesome innovation here. Great entry!
It seems like attacking to the side is faster than attacking up or down. I can press attack with a faster rhythm going left/right, and that led to several deaths trying to fight guys above or below me. The narrative is very charming and the graphics are great. The sound effects are solid and it's nice to be able to really explore. Great entry!
So hilarious! Playing as the ultimate villain... a totally biased ref! Great art and sound. REALLY good stuff!
Everything here is really solid except for maybe the platforming controls. Great interpretation of the theme. The light/dark mechanic is really great, and the mood is very dark. Good work!
What else is there to say? He knows he's good. We know he's good. The game is amazing. It's fun as crap. It looks gorgeous. I just wish there were more levels :p
Great concept. Great art. Hilarious OYOYOYOYOYOYOY sound. But it's pretty dang hard. I can be on the ceiling but the guys shoot me without even aiming up. It's a bit frustrating, which sucks... because I really dig everything else about this.
Brilllllliant perspective mechanic. Nice interpretation of the theme with the 'origins of a villain' story. But holy CRAP the platforming controls are seriously frustrating. The jump is either broken or just completely unpredictable. Not being able to jump while walking down an incline on the boxes nearly kills the entire final level. It took me 12 tries on the final level before I finally decided to just try it without the boxes. Made it all the way to the top with just the tacks by picking them up from under me while jumping and resticking them immediately... almost like an elevator. The game is innovative enough and interesting enough to make you fight through the controls, but the ending that you get is a serious letdown after spending that much time trying to get out of there. GREAT WORK OVERALL!!!!
Awesome reversed roles! It does feel a bit rushed, and the fact that the player goes on a pre-defined path is a bit disappointing. Once you fail you can just kind of make a line of little minions to drain all energy before they reach a chest. Needs some music and more varied sound effects to really set the mood, but the graphics are incredibly charming. I'd love to see this game extended.
Very awesome game! Needs some music and a few tweaks to make it really rad, but you have an amazing start! I'm gonna jump into the post compo version right away! Great work!
Game worked just fine for me. I was expecting more of a turn based game or something based on the instructions screen and was surprised to see what the gameplay actually was. Very interesting and unique take on the theme. The music was a nice touch!
I love the minimalist retro style. Very charming. The gameplay is incredibly easy, though. Would've liked more of a challenge. Great interpretation of theme. Who could be worse than someone ruining Christmas???!!!
Awesome job! I love the implementation of theme here. Great little puzzler. With some fancier graphics and sounds, I can totally see this selling on mobile devices.
I can't get H to work for some reason. Had to keep looking at my fingers to make sure I was actually hitting H. This is a very innovative use of the theme! Not all that fun, yeah, but I was kinda diggin' the beat for a bit there. :)
lol ... yeah this guy is certainly one helluva villain. Great HUD idea and comical sound effects!
Well... I certainly did beat nature! lol
Needs moat blood n guts and also rad sounds.
GAH. I can't get it to run. No error. No window. No nothing. It just sits there. :(
Very awesome concept and execution with the body control. Needs more, yeah... but what's here is really great. The theme isn't very strong here, but the graphics and gameplay are solid. Desperately needs audio to make the mood. Great job! Don't stop!
This is tricky but very innovative. I dig the look and sound of everything. Let us know about your 'smug and secretive' plan before too long, eh? ;p
Don't know whether to give five stars for graphics or 1 LOL
Hilarious game with a rad soundtrack. The levels are very easy but the last 3 bosses can be a bit tough. Decent challenge and a great interpretation of the theme. Awesome ending!
I'd love to try it but I don't have a way to play Linux games at the moment.
Wow, a lot of people are really just not getting your awesome link to the theme AT ALL. If you play this and think it's just 'glitching' then maybe you need to slow down and really think about what's going on. The dude thinks he's the hero but the player slowly starts to view beyond the character's version of the world and starts to see reality for what it really is... a guy slaying innocent creatures in a happy little valley and not some hero slaying evil knights. Great job on the theme, and NIIIIICE job on the visual effects. It's rather short and not very challenging as a 'game', but it is a very thought provoking experience. Good work!
SOCK SESS!!! I ended up playing the same two games over and over. Are there more? This was hilarious.
What a fun little stealth game! It got VERY challenging and tricky later on. I enjoyed the music and the overall feel of the game... and the main character looks awesome. :D
Awesome concept! And strangely addictive. I played through until the end and loved every second. It's a very simple idea but it's executed very well. The little touches make it great, like the way the pedestrians shake when the money comes out, and how the old ladies have different items. Great job all around!
Wow, this game looks very smoooooooth. The art is very well done here, although I know it's not totally original. But still, the aesthetics are great. The AI of PacMan leaves a lot to be desired. He mostly just ran right into a ghost within seconds of starting. Make that AI a bit tougher and you've got yourself a winner!
Yeah you can tell that you made the art from scratch, but it's still obviously the Pac Man we all know. Your art, however, is very smooth and appealing, unlike the much older and obviously outdated 'real' Pac Man.
Nice innovation and theme interpretation. Wish I would've known that there is no win condition before playing for 10 minutes after I actually reached 'the end'. Took a long while to figure out what the heck was going on, but I figured it out and was able to get what I wanted every turn.
This is some great innovation and a nice interpretation of the theme. The voice recognition is a bit spotty but I'm used to that. Great work, guys! This game sets a great mood.
Very cool concept. Needs more content, obviously... and the trap placement is very touchy. At one point, a village asked me to place a trap under his feet and this only resulted in looping the dialogue. Great interpretation of the theme.
VERY FUN GAME! I played it over and over. Really loved the randomness of it all... how each playthrough is different. Really needs some music, though. Great visuals and the controls are nicely balanced with movement speed and fire rate. Great work!
AWESOME MULTIPLAYER ACTION!!! Full marks for fun. Lost myself for a long time playing this one. Nice use of theme and rockin' music. Thanks for the rad game!
SO FUNNY! Not sure what it has to do with the theme, but I love this ridiculous ass game.
Awesome game references! Nice time attack challenge with great art and music!
SO MUCH FUN!!!!! Your hard work paid off. Great job on cranking out so many wonderful levels in the time alloted. Killer game!
Great main character! I really like that little dude. Very nice sprites, a great challenge, and nice interpretation of the theme. Good work!
Wonderful sprites, great audio quality, and a nice challenge. All around good stuff! Good work, everyone!
OOOOH neat idea! Really unique and refreshing puzzler. Good job! Keep working on it and make it a little faster, maybe.
Great use of theme! You packed a lot of action into just a few squares. Good work!
I really love the style! The sprite work here is really phenomenal. The key mapping is really awkward for me, though, and it obviously needs some audio. You should keep working on this. :)
Very cool the way the walls pull back. I started off feeling kind of cramped then WHOOOOSH! It's very challenging, and I sort of hate how they spawn so close to you without warning and chip away at your health. But it's also very satisfying to blast away at the blue restroom logo dudes! I lost 2 games to 3. :(
I'm glad the second puzzle is turning out to be a challenge. I was worried that it would be way too simple. I wanted to approach the theme with minimal plot/story/instructions/tutorial with only one 'action' button and very basic character control. Having any sort of built-in hints would go against that minimalism. The second puzzle has visual AND audio clues built in, btw. ;)
For those that are stuck... vandriver has it figured out. There are visual clues if you trace the wires, but if you tick ON the parts that SOUND correct together and left the others off, then you'll notice a change and can continue on from there. You CAN trace the wires to see which units link up, but you can also go by the sounds.
OK, there are enough comments so this will be buried pretty deep, but for those that are still stuck, the second and final puzzle solution: Turn on the 3 machines that are making beautiful music together without any excess noise or obvious detuning. This will cause the machine without a wire to turn on. Flip it from - to + then turn the others back on. They are now tuned properly!
Yeah, it's tough with just 48 hours. What you see here is basically the 2nd and 6th 'puzzle' that you'd see in a natural progression of the game. These audio puzzles can't just be whipped up with programming, because I had to actually write the songs and split the instruments out. To do that 6 times in 48 hours along with the art and coding? No way, haha! So yeah, I will have to find ways to introduce the player to the different aspects of the way the system works.
Thanks for playing and commenting!
I agree. But with the limited time, I just couldn't compose an entirely new set of tracks to create another song. I see this as more of a prototype than a full experience. It's certainly an abrupt jump from the first puzzle to the next, and then it just kind of ends. Thanks for the comments!
Thanks everyone for the awesome ratings! The full game will take the basics of what I formed during the compo and will blow it wide open into a much more 'fun' experience. More info will be posted at phantomgreen.com for those that want to follow along. Also twitter @Phantom_Green
Really, really great. Easily one of my favorite LD games ever. LOVE the sprites, LOOOOOOVE the music, and the puzzling gameplay is outstanding. Very tricky but very rewarding! CONGRATS ON SUCH AN AMAZING GAME!
I remixed/re-arranged the theme from Fractured. Thanks for such an awesome game, dalbinblue!
https://soundcloud.com/sonnybone/fractured-remix-dalbinblue
20 OVERALL!!! YEAH!!! Great job! Congrats!
Yeah, great controls! Nice interpretation of the theme. My only complaint is that the audio is a bit grating. Other than that, solid game for 48 hours!
Great mechanic and nice use of theme! I liked the sprites, too. That falling ceiling is terrifying, actually!
REALLY awesome game. Very smooth aesthetic and gameplay. It's such a relaxing yet challenging experience. NAILED the theme. Your games just keep getting better! Very impressed with your technical achievements here. Kudos!
REALLY awesome mood and you nailed they theme in both visuals and gameplay. The music is hauntingly beautiful... and those colors... oh those colors!
HOLY CRAP this is good. The audio... oh man. I love how the visuals and audio change as your progress. Even the slightest touches, like the little sound when you're standing in the light... it just works. And that final image when it's all over and the music... just perfect. You nailed it. Totally nailed it. GREAT WORK!
OH, and the controls are almost perfect. The only issue is the jerkiness when you run into a wall, but it's really smooth and looks great in motion!
I felt like I was slaughtering Lemmings! Hahaha
Glad you had fun with LD. Please come back for more! This was my 8th. It has become on obsession now... lol
Great challenge! Nice use of theme, and WOW it looks so smooth and delicious. Good work!
Great artistic style and nice audio! It's a bit tough but rewarding when you finally beat it.
HA! This is genius on some kind of level that can't be accurately measured by humans. Hint: Potato up my butt
Man, this is soooooo great. The art style is really something special. The audio is perfect. I would like some SFX to go along with the battles, but the music is really perfect for this. The lack of context and story is great because I was able to come up with my own twisted little scenario in my head. Thanks for making this!
Nice minimal art style. I like the unique look of the ships, and the target graphic is great! It's a nicely paced little shooter.
LOVE the challenge in this! Nice innovation with the shrinking ability. Great use of the theme, and I LOVE the crashing animation with the black ship tumbling down. Good stuff!
WONDERFUL models, textures, lighting, and particle effects! The way that you control the ball feels a bit clumsy. I feel like there should be some way to 'lock' onto the ball to be able to guide it rather than just run into it and hope for the best. Watching your Unity skills evolve over these LD compos has been great!
WOW! This is twice in a row that you've blown me away with your style and addictively fun gameplay! Great job all around. The music is wonderful, the sprites are charming, and the gameplay is unique, challenging, and exciting. The dialogue is also a great touch. Little things like the transparency of the cursor when you're 'reloading' and the way the health bar swells and then shakes when the castle takes a hit... nice touches. Great work but PHENOMENAL work for 48 hours. KUDOS ONCE AGAIN!

AWESOME SCORES, MAN! WHEN YOU'RE SUPER FAMOUS AND RICH, REMEMBER ME! hahaha
Congrats! Seriously!
RUDE BEAR RETURNS!!!! HAHA
Awesome minimalist style, and lots of varying enemy types! Great work for the Jam.
Nice innovative concept and GREAT execution. Very pleasing visuals and it really did feel like I was being horribly distracted. JUST LET ME HOVER MY MOUSE OVER THIS KEYBOARD, YOU STUPID UNHINGED WINDOW AND ODD LITTLE ELECTRIC DEVICE THAT IS WAY TOO CLOSE TO MY WORK SPACE!!!
Really hard to control, but great Katamari style "knockoff" with a nice shading effect!
Amazingly unique interpretation of the theme! For a game about selling crap to make rent, it sure was exciting! Great job!
HA!!! This is hard as crap, but it's hilariously entertaining. Good work!
AWESOME! Great animations, nice sprites, funky ass music, and hilarious taterz!
HA! Hilarious VO work! Very innovative approach to the theme, and a great concept for a puzzle platformer. Taking the light/dark world thing to another level!
Damn this game is rad! Great concept, great audio, nice visuals, and a reaaaaaalllly good use of the theme. There's an incentive to replay levels, too, which ends up giving your game some longevity. Great entry!
I got my tail end stuck on a few corners and had to reset :( Some audio would really help to bring it all together, but this was a pleasant little shooter.
THE HUGE GUYS GOT THE JUMP ON ME! Caught me off guard, haha! Not bad for 4 hours!
Awesome way to establish your 'stats' and 'equipment' by giving us the choices up front. Would make more sense in an actual full game, but the concept is very refreshing for a 48 hour game. Great challenge on the boss battle! Nice job!
Had a blast watching jellycakes get to 200 deaths in this. Great challenge and nice top-down platforming action! You really nailed the theme from an aesthetic standpoint!
Full marks for innovation and theme! Great idea that could use some balancing, but you have a really neat concept that I can see becoming very successful with the right additions. Maybe some kind of indicator for what is about to appear... like a brief flash in the area that the object is either going to start or end up. And maybe timing based spawning with the music to get the player into a rhythm of being able to spin the shape and turn on/off the outline for bouncing or capturing. Again, great innovation! Good job!
This is REALLLLLLLLLLY fun and innovative. I mean, it's a "runner", sure... but I really feel like I'm in some kind of action film. The slo mo effects with sound and the ability to rotate in midair are my favorite effects. It's a little tough, sure... but that's what kept me coming back for more! I say polish this sucker up and keep going. Keep a minimalist art style... it works... but maybe stylize it a bit. You have something really awesome, here. CONGRATS!
GOBLIN KING IS AN IMPOSSIBLE BEAST!!!
lol
HA! Awesome. Love the ending. This is a very simple idea but it's sooooooo addicting. Great job on nailing the theme!
GENIUS!!!
Genius!
OOH I'm gonna need some paper towels to clean up that bloody mess... luckily I'm so QUILTY! THE QUICKER PICKER UPPER
This game is hilarious and well made. Great idea, great execution! GREAT GREAT GREAT
Wow. Didn't expect to get 6 real types of trees that all grow so differently and beautifully. Great work! Really great work.
WOW! Awesome idea, great execution, and nice interpretation of the theme. Really tense gameplay once you get into the higher levels! FANTASTIC ENTRY!
AWESOME! The lighting and models are nearly perfect. This thing is gorgeous! Needs some sfx to tie the action together for satisfying impacts. That would be my only complaint. Great interpretation of the theme!
OH, and the effect when you win is really well done.
Can't get it to launch. Windows 7 64 bit. EXE crashes before it even loads into memory.
LOTS OF SCARES CRAMMED INTO THIS LITTLE BOX! I've heard that audio elsewhere before, though, so I can't rate you as highly on Audio and Mood. :(
I'll be passing this game around to my friends. Lots of fun!
I BEAT IT! HILARIOUS ENDING! HAHA!
Genius gameplay, nice graphics, perfect use of theme... Very awesome!
For those that are stuck... you CAN control it. It's not a random chance sort of thing.
You should tighten this up and make it a bit more forgiving. I dig what you have so far and would love to be able to actually enjoy it! Haha. Good work!
14255
Love the combo system that encourages you to get a bit risky even with one life... and the whole idea of the two subs with different skills is SO GREAT! Graphics are gorgeous, the music is really fitting (and rad), and the lighting effect is superb. Being able to jump up out of the water is a blast. ;)
Really solid. REALLY solid. Everything works the way it should and the way that you'd expect. The colors, the minimalism, the sounds, the text. It all fits together so perfectly. It makes you think, and it forces you to slow down and soak up everything life has to offer. Boobs lol
Great challenge, great pacing/progressions, and nice light/dark mechanic. Very fun and lots of content for 48 hours!
As always, you did an amazing job. Good to see that you got sound this time! Your approach to the theme was perfect. The game doesn't say much but it says SO MUCH, which is the entire point. You nailed it. Seeing the extra gravestones was a nice touch, and the progression of abilities kept things fresh when the game is already SO unique to start with. Nice effects with the leaves and clouds, and the ending with the particles was a very nice surprise. My favorite part is how the animation of the bird is affected by the speed of movement.
The audio is VERY WELL DONE. You totally nailed the mood and atmosphere.
Keep it up!
Wow. Great atmosphere. It's amazing what can be accomplished a few shapes as long as you have a great sense of style. Nice challenge, great audio, and a refreshing idea. Great job!
I love the sunset/dusk look of everything. The textures are nicely styled. Crashing and spinning out of control is fun, too! Interesting mix of flight sim and mining.
Lots of depth hidden in this game. Very surprising amount of challenge and exploration. Great controls, nice colors, and a great use of the theme.
Awesome music and great core concept. It takes way too long for the game to get challenging... and what's the point of the stars? Couldn't pick them up at all. And yeah, it DOES pick up after level 20. :)
HA! I love watching other people play this. Also, this dude with 80 fucking legs is a beast! I'd hate to be an insect in his house.
REVERSE METROID!!! Genius. There is a TON of content in this game for 48 hours. You basically made mini Metroid in less than 2 full days. WOW. Great concept and theme interpretation. Some of the animations (like the jump) are dazzling! Good work!
WOW! I think this is your best game yet! I found myself spending a lot of time on this. The music is REALLY good, too. It's very challenging, and the fill effect is hypnotic. You really nailed the theme, too.
Great story! The game looks and plays very smoothly, and you nailed the theme. Nice use of color to go along with the progression of the character's thoughts!
You got me! I was expecting yet another 'block' game and then BOOOOOM you hit me with the art change! I hate those birds, though. I can't hit them when they're on another plane, but they can hit me. I hate them for that! Great job with the art and sound. Nice interpretation of theme!
Perfect use of the theme. The only game so far where doing absolutely nothing gets you the victory. ULTIMATE MINIMALISM!
I love sitting in the chair. It feels so natural! You really accomplished a lot in 48 hours and you made something that's very strangely ... what's the word ... I don't know. It's just so oddly intriguing. The auto-interaction works really well to immerse you into the world.
Isn't it strange how such a "simple" idea can grow legs and just take over your brain? There's really nothing going on when you first look at this game, but it quickly sneaks up and kicks you in the ass. I really love what's going on under the hood, so to speak. Great use of theme. Nice job!
This is the best fucking song I've ever heard. No lie.
Infinite stars.
Loved the story and the characters and muffin gun and... ugh the mayor! ... lol I only got one.
Great job making something so simple yet so captivating.
Wonderful 3D art. I wasn't so crazy about the comic scenes telling the story but it would've been a nightmare to have to cram all of that same stuff into the actual game engine via animations/coding/etc, so I totally get why it was done. And it's not that the comic art was bad or anything, it's just that the 3D models and environment are so satisfying that you just want to exist entirely in that world and the comics kind of pull you out of it. It's less of a knock on the comics and more praise for the 3D work.
I was able to solve the puzzle after a few tries. Good job of throwing in some curve balls to make the 'obvious' solution not so straight forward.
Great entry!
I'll start off with what I don't like.
I'm not crazy about the sfxr sound effects. I don't like the feel of the jumping or maybe it's the jump speed.
What I do like... everything else. Very charming sprites, great bow mechanic, nice use of theme, rad song, decent difficulty that curves up at a reasonable pace, and an awesome title.
Good work!
Awesome use of theme and a great innovative twist on platforming. The difficulty spikes quickly and my stick burned down to nothing without me realizing that it was getting close. The fire is very obvious and you can stop and blow on it when needed but the feedback for the stick itself is a bit lacking.
Platforming was a little loose and floaty but it works in this game because this is some dumb caveman guy running to find true love with a burning stick in his hand. He ain't no Meatboy and he doesn't have to be.
Funny sounds, too. The visuals do the job. Great entry!
Added a DropBox link. Try that instead. Thanks for the heads up, dalbinblue! I'll check your game ASAP.
lol that didn't take long
Confirmed that it does crash in Wine when you try to advance beyond the title screen. Workin' on a fix.
Wine build added with snow disabled. See note above.
LOL you get big love now
@Nichii - Yeah, all assets made in 48 hours. I totally wanted different types of kids each with different movement types / speeds and even had players able to aim shots but it was all too much to implement in 48 hours. Also with the aiming being added, it created a bit of an issue with the 'puzzle' aspect where now there is a clear 'perfect' shot that can be made. With aiming it became infinitely more difficult to get that 'perfect' shot because of all the extra angle variables at play.
@KumoKairo - Thank you! I compiled all of my previous LD game soundtracks into a album you can find at PhantomGreen.com - I will make this soundtrack available as well. Leave a message via my website contact form and I can send you a notification when it's ready.
@GBolt - No real thought or effort behind it. Decent comment. I assume that because there is no strategy that you were able to get all Gold medals and clear every stage with a Murdertality bonus? Since you didn't post your score I assume it was simply too large to fit on the screen.
@lightsoda - Yeah level 10 is great fun but I wanted more of a focus on timing and patterns, not so much a straight-up killfest. And as for firing a bullet too early, that's my bad. The spacebar doesn't advance through the score screen to the next stage. It's just all on a timer. I should've disabled player input until after the 'STAGE' text had moved out of the way.
Thanks everyone! I'll be playing your games sometime soon.
THANK YOU, JaJ !!! Haha
@vandriver - Thanks, man. Yeah I regret not being able to have the time to add the classic arcade mode and a 'level attack' mode. I also wanted a better final screen with a rundown of your individual level scores and medals but that stuff takes way more time than I always think it will.
The post-mortem will shed more light on what got cut but the levels, scoring, different enemy colors/types, and blood-on-screen-splatter effect all got axed on the last day.
@Gungnir - Thank you for the kind words. Yes, the score rundown was hastily thrown together and desperately needs a 'skip' for those that just want to rush through and practice the stages for HIGH SCORE GET.
And if I didn't loathe the mobile game scene so much, I'd probably try to release this. But I won't. Cuz I do. :)
@alchiggins - I tried that but was having trouble with the physics and gravity that went along with my jump timing. Thanks for posting your score. My best is about 140,000 or so... so if anyone wants to try and top that...
I beat my old high score but I still screwed up 2 of the stages so that means it can go even higher: 153,749
@supremefist - thanks!
@Reverend Speed - GRATING - that's me!!!
Cool use of the theme! Nice twist on a classic game. The visuals and audio are appropriate and the gameplay is very challenging.
Oooooh! I like a lot of what you have going on here. I especially love that shopkeeper sprite. HOLY CRAP! The neat little weapon swap mechanic (lol at the restocking fee) and the different uses. Some of the puzzles were really well done, too. As usual, you packed a lot of variety into the sprites.
Now for a few issues I had. Not major, but your slime sprite seemed to have a kind of box around it. No other sprite looked like that, so I'm guessing it's an odd sprite sheet miscalculation somewhere or maybe it's just my machine.
Also, the slimes were oddly tough to kill due to the player's hitbox or maybe it's the sword swipe hitbox being too small or something?
And I found a bug that caused me to have to restart. In the room with all the little blue squid thingies where you have to kill them to open the door at the bottom, I stayed in the doorway and killed a few baddies before going in. When I went into the room, the doors locked behind me and then I killed them all and the doors didn't open. So I guess it didn't register the kills because I did them in the doorway before the room locked?
The music is great, the spriting is really consistent and imaginative, and the core mechanic is really solid. Your approach to the theme was very entertaining. Great game as usual!
LOL ! Ok so this is the best game title ever.
And man that little guy had to doo doo so much! What did he eat? Loved the boss fight with all the different types of shots, especially those black/red homing shots that shoot after you once they reach your X coordinate.
Needed some music but it was still entertaining. Great story and concept. A little monotonous to have to go back to the toilet but the paths opened up shortcuts that helped early on.
Thanks for a fun game!
It was pretty easy once I figured out how it works. Pretending to tie my show helped when no signs were around. Standing behind signs was great for ducking mobs without having to deal with the standing animation pause of the pretend-tie. Good balance!
There isn't much to it, obviously, but what's here is really solid. Great spriting, innovative idea, imaginative use of theme, and a rockin' tune.
Holy crap, man. There were several moments where I legitimately stopped and thought, "OH WOW" or "HOW DID HE DO THIS" or "THAT WAS CLEVER". The sphere you collect... the first time I threw it and it bounced... then I looked at the animation of it kind of 'rolling' and just stared at it. It's so simple but just beautiful. And the music. OH MY GOD THE MUSIC. Everything about the audio just really sucked me into this world and made me want to know more. I wanted some kind of connection to this little guy and I was pushed and pushed to get through some tricky puzzles (good job on the puzzle design!) and then I was rewarded by a genuinely moving ending that nearly made me shed a tear.
This is a very, very fine accomplishment.
Yeah, it's a puzzle platformer and there isn't much innovation going on, but you gotta look beyond that and see that what's here is pretty much perfect. And in 48 hours? Are you kidding me? This is a fucking triumph.
Oh man! I blew myself up! It's kind of hard to tell which way you're facing (up or down) if you forget which way you last moved. That's my only issue with the visuals. This game looks 100 percent like it should. You even have the LED for the bomb count on the cabinet.
Speaking of the cabinet...
HOLY CRAP A CABINET!
Also an oddity... the cab says L Shift for laser but R Shift does the laser on my keyboard. Hmm.
The audio doesn't fit they visual style, unfortunately, but that doesn't mean it's not good. It's a very relaxing tune that helps me think about my next few moves.
Good work, man!
Awesome visual style but I got a bug. Said I got the boomerang but threw the star beam. Said I got the star beam but threw the boomerang.
Also, star beam is OP! lol
Needs some audio to make it feel complete, but the basic idea and execution here is really great. I could totally see this as a Gameboy game or something. Very very memorable characters and stage tiles.
Heh
Haha
HAAA
HAHAHAHAHAHA
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
This shit is amazing! I have nothing else to say.
Awesome, awesome visuals and physics. GREAT use of theme and very fun gameplay (with gamepad, not with keyboard... haha). It's tough but it really makes you feel for the guy. I'M SO HAPPY I HAVE ALL MY LIMBS. THANK YOU FOR THE REMINDER!
One of the best looking / playing games I've seen thus far. Easily.
Needs some more info displayed to the player about what's happening and what does what but I very much enjoyed my time with this game.
Great sprites, fun music, decent challenge, and a very innovative take on the theme.
Great work all around!
Ooooooooooooooh this is so good! Lots of thought went into this and your puzzles are well made but HOLY CRAP that tutorial is king. You taught me how to play while letting me play, which is the best way to do it.
The visual style is certainly unique and consistent but the real draw here is your amazing use of theme and the fun factor. This is a real winner!
RAD!
Game loads up to a black screen and I hear what sounds like text typing. Game Maker games don't always work in full-screen and I see that yours launches that way. Try disabling full-screen on launch or tick one of those 'v-sync' or whatever options if you can. I WANNA PLAY!
Thanks for the re-release to fix the full-screen issue. I need to look into why I'm having this problem before I start playing too many games.
I love how tiny your sprites are yet how lively and pronounced they become in the actual game. Your color palette is very nice.
Procedural levels? AWESOME! I didn't run into any issues with unreachable areas so that's a great accomplishment, man.
The platforming is very tight and the double jump is so sweet (I think the flip is wonderful). Swordplay looks and feels great and you have a good block system in place. The enemies can be a bit dumb but that just makes them more fun to murdertality. AND THE BLOOD! It sticks to your world tiles, which is awesome. I wanted to do that in my game but didn't have time. JEALOUS!
The sfx are great, music is good, and you have a neat interpretation of the theme that's unique. The steel heart idea is really rad.
Great job as usual, man!
HOOOOOLEEEEE CRAAAAAAP this is amazing.
Awesome, awesome, awesome idea with the 'only one can win' and the piles and piles of previous players. I played this for waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too long but had to stop. I'll try again later after some other bodies pile up.
The music is SOOOOO rad.
RUDE BEAR LIVES ON
IN MY HEART
MY MIND
MY BUTT
AND STUFF
The controls are a bit squishy at first but I learned to master the jumps and wall hugs and could zoom through pretty easily but still got tripped up by the traps and doom and murder.
I LOVE IT
BEST LD28 GAME SO FAR!!!
The aesthetic initially made me think of Hotel Dusk but as I played it felt more and more like an old-school 16-bit era digitized platfomer... but way less ugly than those things were.
Awesome setting, music, and graphics. Gameplay is a little unforgiving. Waiting for that elevator really sucks when you die and have to start over.
Good entry!
I wanted to love this so much but it just doesn't work correctly. :(
Charging my shot sometimes resulted in moving 3 spaces, sometimes 1. I reloaded and tried several times and got the same inconsistent results.
Lovely concept and awesome art, though. Nice take on the theme. I just wish it worked as intended because I really wanted to play it.
Wow.
Just wow.
Such an innovative and well programmed game. I had a blast with this. The only thing missing is better audio.
Would love to see this expanded.
GREAT GREAT JOB
Starts up with a black screen. Any way you could give me a version with a full-screen toggle? If this was made in GM then it's probably the same issue I've had with other GM games. Starting in full-screen doesn't work for me for some odd reason.
NEVERMIND! Got it to work. Had to update some drivers.
The art is great but the double tap control scheme creates a weird issue. It would be much more intuitive and seamless if you could just hold in a direction and press an 'attack' button. That way I could jump to the right, up+attack to kill a jetdog, then left+attack twice to zip to the left side of the screen and kill the other jetdog, drop down the right+attack twice to kill the dog on the left and the right. The way it is now, you lose vertical positioning when you have to double tap, so your dash attacks from one side to the other don't always line up and in a game where every second counts, you miss the target.
I'd love to see the controls refined because the game has the potential to be really quick, challenging, and exciting... and your pixel art is friggin' awesome!
Good entry!
This is the most fun I've had with an LD entry. Very very awesome and simple core mechanic that works wonderfully with the theme. Sprites are charming and the blood/slash is satisfying especially when racking up a nice chain of kills.
Great job!
Man, this is deceptively fun. At first I was like, "Well... ok this is a bit slow." THEN TURTLES SHOWED UP! HOLY CRAP THE STRATEGY WHEN YOU GET 3 OR 4 TURTLES ON THE SCREEN AND WAVES OF WHALES AND OCTOPUSESSSSESES!
The game is really fun, has a great difficulty curve and pacing, and the audio fits well. You have this crazy concept of a snowglobed space pirate boat shooting a huge harpoon that's bouncing around a scroll boundary hitting flying space whales and turtles with rotating shields. It's crazy as hell and I love it!
The only bad thing is the graphics don't really do match up with the rest of the experience. With some better art and some more polish this would be AMAZING. It's still awesome fun right now, though. GREAT ENTRY!
I made a game kind of like this a few LDs ago so I was able to solve this one really quick. This kind of shit is MY JAM!
Love the look and feel and audio puzzles are the shit. Always.
Solving your puzzle was like taking a neon shot of groove right into my urethra. I loved every body numbing second of it.
Just so you know, if you have to use audio that you didn't create yourself, you should enter in the JAM where the rules aren't as strict. The COMPO rules don't allow for the use of music like this. FYI
This game appears to be very crude but it's actually very well crafted and challenging. Your choice of powers at the start of each stage changes which is a nice touch that adds an extra layer of depth to the strategy. Nice!
LOL - this is awesome. Lovin' the Misfits-soaked influence and you totally nailed the 'crummy bar fight meets Street Fighter with typing' genre.
My best time is 8.3 seconds
Wonderful game from top to bottom!
The art left me in awe and the audio was superb. Great core mechanic and perfect use of the theme, in my opinion.
Really, really great work!
Great story-driven experience! You used the theme very similarly to me but with a much more serious approach. Shooting that guy with a quick reflex is tricky but extremely satisfying when you pull it off.
Good job!
Yeah unfortunately the wonderful music contributes to the relaxing mood of the game, so the fact that you didn't follow compo rules affects more than just the audio score. For future reference, the 48 hour compo requires all assets be created within the time limit while the 72 hour jam allows for music that you did not create yourself. You could've entered this game into the jam without any issues, but it does unfortunately violate the compo rules :(
The visuals are pleasing and you used a very innovate approach to the theme. I didn't see any way to know when new animals were available except for the rabbits, though. That would be my one complain about the gameplay. I was just randomly right clicking until I was finally able to buy foxes (had nearly 2/3 of the green bar full).
As others have stated, your music and audio are outstanding. You have an original and innovative core concept but it has unfortunately resulted in a flawed shooter. Having an invincible player results in gameplay that doesn't require you to be extremely precise in your movement and there is very little need to dodge enemies. This becomes really evident when you get to the boss battle and can just sit in one spot near the left of the screen and hold down the fire button until the health bar is gone.
You added the enemy that slows you down, which works great for keeping the player away from the mana orb. Still, it's not enough to keep the game from being far too easy. The switching mechanic is also kind of strange. Maybe it needs more feedback for the player, and maybe it should be limited or have a cooldown phase so you can't spam it over and over to get the orb out of tough spots so quickly. The player feels REALLY overpowered here.
And I don't want it to seem like I'm being extremely negative about your game. In fact, it's the opposite. I think that your game's aesthetic is wonderful and your characters are very memorable. It would be great for you all to keep working on this because it could be VERY VERY VERY awesome with some tweaks to the core gameplay. This looks like an extremely professional product and it would be a shame to not keep working on this. What you have here is more than just a jam game, it's a start to something much bigger.
Thank you so much for putting your talents together for LD and welcome to the newcomers on your team!
One of the biggest things I've learned from Ludum Dare is that a lot of game developers SUUUUUUCK at actually playing games. I didn't find this game too difficult. In fact, the difficulty was at that perfect sweet spot for me where just as you start to get frustrated, you have a breakthrough and wonder why you even struggled with it to start with.
Perfect use of the theme. Great puzzle/platform/action mixture that really forces you to think about the "one" that you get.
Nice sprites (although I find myself wishing it stuck to classic NES color restrictions) and that BGM is sweeeet!
Wonderful entry all around!
I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE THIS GAME. It's weird at first and then once it clicks... oh man... you're on this mad exploration dash to figure out all the little secrets.
It looks. So. Fucking. Good.
And it sounds great, too. More than great, actually.
I'm not totally sold on the theme connection so maybe you need to explain it better to me or something... but that's my only gripe. I managed to map the controls to X-Padder and had a blast running around snipping things and poisoning all kinds of crazy creatures.
AWESOME GAME!
Awesome audio! The graphics are also incredibly charming and the animations are great, especially when you die. The core idea of the game is also insanely innovative, even if the theme connection is a bit of a stretch. That's my only gripe in an otherwise stellar game.
One of my favorites so far!
Added you to the Rad Game Roundup: http://www.phantomgreen.com/2013/12/ludum-dare-28-rad-game-roundup/
Very cool concept, I just wish there was some kind of score at the end to tell me how far I got. I finally got the hang of it and was going along very smoothly then I got hit with the ultimate combination: a wall with a hole on the far right then a wall with a hole on the far left. That combo sent me into a right/left/right tailspin that I never recovered from.
Very very very fluid controls. Core mechanic is nearly flawless. Graphics are AMAZING. Animation of movement and idle is great and the death of enemies with the leaf burst is wonderful. Sound is a bit lacking, but it's a very small complain on an otherwise stellar entry.
YOU SHOULD FEEL PROUD!
Advice: Change the main screenshot for your game if you want more plays. What's there isn't very appealing when compared to the actual experience.
OK, so the key binding at the start. I LOVE YOU! This is a great, great idea and it really helped me enjoy your game that much more.
AUDIO... you have a ton of it. Ending music, stage music, boss-specific sounds. Good stuff.
The gameplay is very solid and the core mechanic works well. It can get a bit tough and I feel like anything less than a full power shot is useless, but having a gamepad helped me overcome any issues.
Spriting is simple but efficient, particles are great, physics work as you'd hope. Enemy variety, challenge, etc... all good stuff.
Great entry!
Wow, this is crazy innovative. I love the reverse RPG stuff and you added some great humor here. I mean, it's obviously incomplete but what's here is very promising. The control, the animation, the colors. It's all really solid.
I don't really get the theme that much, though. Based on your description I was assuming I'd be controlling a single slime but then they all kind of attack together.
I totally relate to some of what he says, too. "RNG IS BULLSHIT" got me as well as him just wanting to complete the set.
Sucks that you struggled with the theme, but you still pulled out a memorable game even if it is incomplete.
Oh man. THAT MUSIC. THAT MUSIC! This is very impressive for a compo. Great work on nailing a consistent visual style and getting the audio SO SO SO PERFECT. The theme led you to a very interesting mechanic that creates a kind of strategy you wouldn't initially expect.
Great work!
Genius use of the theme. Lots of great writing in here, too. I was captivated.
My favorite game thus far in LD28! This is some of the best DDRKirby music I've heard, and I've heard a lot. In fact, this may be my favorite of them all.
The art is also superb.
Your use of theme is genius and the execution is flawless. Tons of content, too. From the two modes, the jukebox, and then the readout at the end telling me how I did. It gives me a reason to play over and over, and that's something you don't see often with a game jam entry.
Phenomenal work all around and I expect some medals to be handed out!
I am in awe at this wonder. The graphics, the music, the gameplay, the story... the feeling. Everything here is perfect. PERFECT.
I cannot stress it enough: This is the best Ludum Dare game I've played since I started with Ludum Dare 16. I'll be messaging you individually and will probably write something about this on my site.
Simply outstanding.
At first I was like, "Cool".
Then I was like "What?"
Then I was like "Ohhhhh ok."
Then I was like CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK
Now I'm posting from the hospital because my hand broke off. BUT DAMMIT I GOT COINS!!!!
Great look and feel. Awesome frantic action even if it did kill my hand. Would love some kind of TIME STOP powerup or something every once in a while to get a break but that's just me being a bitch about it and not being the manly farmer I know I can be. I'm sorry paw! Don't beat me with a switch!
Anything that even remotely reminds me of Actraiser is automatically awesome. I played this sucker for a loooong time and ended up slaying the end boss like a champ.
Awesome use of theme and great, innovative mash-up of limted resources, timing, platforming, combat, upgrades... just so much going on.
Outstanding entry!
Super innovative approach to the theme. Loved the concept.
Once things get rolling, it's a bit simple to just drop a sprinkler or two and clear the whole board, and the water can is a bit ambiguous on where to place it to get a response. Those are my only 2 gripes in a very original and wonderful entry. I had fun with this one!
Jezzamon delivers again! Awesome game with a lot of heart. There's so much 'beneath the surface' going on. The initial first impression of the game, the dreams, the princess, going underground... you really nailed the theme. Cute characters, an awesome story, and a thrilling boss battle with a tricky solution. You did a fantastic job!
I'M PISSED - There are two shards I can't get! There has to be some kind of trick that I'm not noticing. Man, this thing looks so simple on the surface, but there's such depth beneath it. You went totally meta with the theme. Gameplay that forces you to think about inversion and going under, and an overall experience that rewards you for breaking through that initial 'first impression' when you fire it up. Wonderful effects as always, and the game is just SO. DAMN. SMOOTH. Very innovative idea and a nice swerve from your previous entry... this time with the focus being on pure 100% gameplay challenge and play-control innovations. Another damn fine Ditto game. I'm so glad you make games.
My favorite Jam entry thus far. Simply perfect on almost every level. The music... oh my god... and how it changes... I can't even deal with how beautiful it is. The sprites, the controls, the humor with the different treasures... the progression... GAHHHH it's just so amazing. Wonderful work all around. You should feel very accomplished!
WOW. I loved it. I got angry trying to jump up that one wall (you know the one) but I was not angry at the game... just angry at Microsoft for making the worst goddamn d-pad in the history of the world outside of the fucking 3DO!!! Ok, I'm still a bit angry. But yeah, I finished it. Loved the music a lot. LIKE A LOT A LOT. Great graphics, wonderful atmosphere, although the colors and some of the sprites are VERY close to Fez. Still, this is by far one of the best games I've played in any Ludum Dare. This is up there with Titan Souls for me. Great work!
I really enjoyed this one. It froze up a few times and I had to restart, but what's here is really promising and addicting. I love the audio design and the sprites. GREAT use of theme, and really cool twist on the typical defense game.
I knew I was in for something special and you delivered. Art Garfunkel and the art fights in the gallery really sold it. So unique, quirky, and amusing. Great job, everyone!
Coooool! It's Anteater underwater! Very lovely visuals, tight gameplay, and great execution of a classic game. Music is nifty, but some sound effects would really bring the arcade feel to completion. Good work!
Ugh. Just an ounce of your musical power. That's all I ask for. JUST AN OUNCE!!! This is easily one of my favorites this time around. It's just so wonderful in every way. Really, really, really tight and responsive runner that sounds better than anything else out there... all in just 48 hours. POST COMPO PLEASE! 5/5
Oh wow you really nailed the feeling of desperation and panic. I still feel a bit anxious and the game has been over for a while. I got about 80 something seconds. I was trying to be fancy thinking I could trade breath for stamina and just drop under the water and then pop up on a wave. NOPE! HAHA. Gonna try again. Good job with the the theme and mood.
Wow this looks rad. I wish I had a Rift now.
Really rad! Awesome take on the theme, awesome pixel art, lots of fun, great challenge... just a really solid entry. Thanks for making something unique and fun!
HAMBURGERS? I slammed my comet-speed corpse into the frozen tundra far too many times to count. I have lost. You have defeated me. THERE BETTER BE A YEARLY INSTALLMENT AND DLC!!!!
I love your art as usual. A great start to a great adventure. You should definitely keep working on this one. :D
YOU ARE THE KING OF CHARACTERS. Man, this was fun. It was a lot like Super Motherlode but more satisfying to fly around underground. I didn't win on the first go, but became a millionaire the second time around. Nice little guitar tune to keep me going... keep working... keep drillin away with THE BEST NAME OF ALL TIME: ARMADRILLO - 5 stars for the name alone. Great work like always! You nailed the theme!
I want to crawl inside your skull and eat my way out - 5/5
So much tension crammed into so little pixels. A truly astonishing achievement in audio design as well. Kudos all around!
I love the innovative look and artistic approach to game design. Very refreshing. :D
WHOA MAN - I was expecting a cool ending but I'll settle for TBC... One of my fave games thus far. Really cool use of the theme... rad art... great dialogue... rad music... just an overally refreshingly great experience. LOVE IT!
Very cool with the slo-mo effect. Blowing up my first jet was a life altering experience. :D
UGH YOU ARE GOOD. I ended up with 11,500 score. This is a really great use of the theme. I almost went with an idea similar to this, but without the arcade style timing-based fun. You really know how to make games simple yet exciting and fun to master. Great work as usual, man!
RUDE BEAR LIVES AGAIN! Man, this was fun. I played with the Xbox 360 controller and had to map the mouse to the right stick but I managed to beat the boss. Not really sure what the other guy was talking about, the first part felt like small info sections, not powerup collections. Felt fine to me. Physics are a little screwy on the jump but #DOFLIPS was gained so it's all good. I love seeing the new RBR tiles at work and DAT NORMAL MAP - return of Dethkube gives high humor score, too. Rude Bear will never die!!!
This marks the second time in just a few months that I've played a game where I farted on aliens. I am ok with this.
Very unique idea with the theme. Fun, addicting gameplay. Rad art. Good challenge. I'd love to see a post-compo with a good tutorial and some polish. Great work as always!
RAD!
Yes, I would also like some audio to go with the experience because your visuals create such a ominous mood by themselves. Of course I'm not saying you should've included audio because not everyone can and 48 hours is already such a small window. I'm saying that you should keep working on it and turn it into an even greater experience. Good AI, tight controls, nice pacing, interesting story, WONDERFUL NAME... good stuff. Congrats!
WHAT A HORRIBLE PLACE TO LIVE!!! Hahaha! Man, the visual style here is so thick n juicy and I just wanna take a big ol bite. How did you get the little people sounds? Are they saying anything in particular or just gibberish sped up? The game is pretty unforgiving but you obviously didn't have the time to get it where you wanted it, and I would like to see an update version. Good job!
Awesome innovative gameplay. With some graphical improvements and some rad audio, you have a hit. This would be awesome on phones. You better keep working on this!!! I MEAN IT!!!
I BEAT IT YEAH - Love the glowing block art style. Very clever and challenging puzzle game. Good job!
Anything Harvest Moon related is cool in my book. Played like total crap in anything other than Chrome. I've been having so many browser game issues. Unity not running in Chrome. HTML5 not working anywhere but Chrome. Your game was slow and silent, then I loaded it up in Chrome and it was so crisp and lively! I hope others don't run into that issue and skip playing your entry because it's really well made. Great art, great music/sfx, a unique take on the theme, and a nice change of scenery from the usual defense game.
Cons - Not very challening - enemy waves take a while to spawn
Overall a very excellent entry. Congrats!
Sweet Jesus
Innovative gameplay. Not too many games feature that kind of jumping/attacking mechanic. It was fun to have something new. Cool music in the end, too.
I love the visual style. The biggest problem is that the dark things get stuck on walls and get in the way of the puzzle's solution. I found the clear path to the exit but it was blocked by enemies that refused to keep moving away from the wall. I would like to play a faster version with less enemies on the screen with maybe a second or two with a countdown at the start to go ahead and start arranging some plants. Maybe that's not your idea of the game but it's a suggestion because the current version is a bit slow to get going. Great concept, though... and the art really stands out. I hope you keep working on it. :)
AAAAAAAAAAAAH HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
This may be my favorite Ludum Dare game ever. I don't even know how to describe how amazing it is to me. It's just... perfect. I wish I could high five the fuck out of you right now. You should parade this through the streets and run for president.
goty
Oooh, this is a great start to something rad. Needs some obvious additions and fixes and stuff, but what you have here is really compelling. I love the 'balance/tilt' mechanic and the wave progression. I say keep working on this one.
I can't get over how great the bubble particles look. It seriously looks like how real bubbles react underwater. Great job nailing that aspect of it. With a bit more work, you could have a really cool game if you can manage to get some audio that matches the tension you feel when underwater. You have a good thing started with this entry. Great job!
Welcome to Ludum Dare! Congratulations. I brought home a good amount of coins but I died anyway. Greedy. I thought the sound effects were very funny! :D
I killed 63! Man, that summoning is sweet. Great gameplay balance, although being hit by underwater cannonballs as they sink feels cheap. You really have no place to hide when you have 20 cannonballs coming at you. Great art, awesome interpretation of the theme, rewarding gameplay, and no bugs that I saw. Great work!!!
Man, whoever engineered that submarine should be fired. It leaks at every seam!!! It would be nice to have more visual feedback on how much water is coming in, because when you lose, you just kind of suddenly lose. Is there a way to win? I couldn't hold off the leaks for very long but I'm wondering if there's a win condition or not. And screw that old man sleeping! DO SOME WORK, MAN, WE'RE SINKING!
Ah, "beneath the surface" ... very smart idea for the theme. I hope others can understand what you were going for without dismissing it as not following the theme.
Man, this game is really really rad, but just so you know... you should've entered the Jam and not the Compo due to the inclusion of pre-existing audio assets (Waltz). Rules mumbo jumbo: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/2014/04/25/rules-and-guide-re-written-for-maximum-clarity/
Just for future reference since your journal doesn't show any previous entries, so I assume you are new to Ludum Dare.
Other than that, really freakin' awesome entry. There really isn't much to say that hasn't already been said. The absurdity of the premise really seals the deal for me. I played with a gamepad and mapped the colored gamepad buttons to the proper spotlight dancemove to make things really easy to remember. Got to about 100k with no end in sight so I just jumped up and down to see what would happen and WHOOOOMMMM I got ate lol
Ooooooh! Fun! You and I made similar games in theme but yours is far more challenging and rewarding to play. Reminds me of an old penguin game I used to play on Master System. I got to the end after beating the last level in one attempt. I was very proud of myself. :p But you should be proud, too because this game is pretty cool!
I won after 11 days and lost 106 villagers but the entire screen was totally full of buildings. 6 forresters, 6 villas, more tents than I could count, and enough towers along the forest line to wrap around the earth 3 times. Felt pretty good to get that far. My only problem with the game is I guess I didn't really feel the theme at all. :(
Some of this is really tricky because of the collision with walls and such, but other than that... really great game! The art and audio create an awesome mood, and like others have said, the blood splatters are great. Good job on the fire/water animations. The light/dark switch is also a cool way to link the theme. Good work!
Rad art, great humor, fun, and very refreshing. There are only a few negatives: 1) theme connection is a bit weak and 2) the jumping kick is far faster and more effective than the punch combo, making the punch almost useless. I very much enjoyed my tame with the game! I was scared when the last guys came out with guns but I wrecked 'em.
I, on the other hand, stood up and applauded the ending of the game. The term "TOUR DE FORCE" applies here. A game with a serious message plastered with ice-breaking crude humor, tight controls, challenging design, unique concepts, perfectly crafted audio, compelling visuals, and tons of CHARACTER. The game's blood-pumping and stressful progression places you into a frame of mind that almost cuts through the absurdity of the situation... putting you into a zen-like zone of concentration as you try to muffle your laughter in an attempt to focus on the task at hand. Then, right as you reach the climax of tension when you see the exit, and you can finally stop holding your breath... the transition into the next scene as you finally exhale in celebration while the game takes a massive visual dump as an exclamation point on the entire experience.
And your account seems like an excuse to be an asshole.
Awesome idea! Great sprites and tons of character. I love how the player isn't just a left/right mirror when moving, and all the little details like the sweat and the different punching speeds. The connection to the theme is superbly innovative. The audio is also really top notch all around. This game just oozes style. My only gripe is that it's possible to just stand on the far right and punch like crazy, killing everything without ever having to change planets.
WOW. I can't say much without spoiling anything so I'll just say you nailed innovation and theme on this one. There isn't a ton of content here but your art is always so charming and the music is still rockin' like usual. Good work! haha
I like to imagine that these are the kids that grew up to be pilots in Redshift Blueshift.
OK, so I've played this about 10 times on different occasions to get my true feelings on it because at first I was so blown away that I had to take a few steps back.
Since then I've played some other games, left a few comments, did some rating... and then I came back to this and it's still awesome.
This game is almost perfect. And the things keeping it from being perfect are kind of silly, but I'll explain them.
1) The sprite for the two main characters, while good, is not nearly as good as the backgroud art. The funny thing is... if the background art was on the same level as the character art, then the graphics would be perfect to me. I guess what I'm getting at is consistency. Despite everything being GREAT, you have this PERFECT background that makes me wish the whole game looked like that. Even something simple like some shading where the hair meets the face... something to give it that same depth/texture as the gorgeous stage art. Graphics are still a 5/5 - and saying "my art is too good" is never a bad thing. And really... this is all about time limits because I feel like you would add some zing to those sprites if you had time. I had the same issue with my entry.
2) The AI is predictable. This can be solved by playing with 2 players, which is a REALLY FUN EXPERIENCE. And how dare you not program insanely smart and challenging AI in 48 hours? Right? Yeah, I didn't have time for that with my game, either. And again, this is something you could improve on with more time but I still feel like the true experience was meant for 2 players.
And that's really it. So you can see I had to scrape the absolute bottom of the barrel to find something negative to day.
The music is absolutely fucking 100% killer. I mean... there's just something about that grungy thick bassline that crunches you into high gear ready for a fight. And speaking of fight...
You nailed the theme. Unconventional weapon? We've all hit somebody with a pillow. It's not a strange thing. It happens daily. But it doesn't hurt... which makes it such a useless weapon in a real fight. And this isn't a real fight... it's just a snapshot of a couple of kids getting ready for bed. To an adult it's just a bunch of roughhousing and noise but these kids are deep into some kind of pretend-mortal-kombat with each blow of the pillow being sold like a top rope piledriver to the concrete. This is what childhood was all about. Taking something simple and mundane and turning it into a deadly weapon via imagination. As I said, you nailed it.
I am in awe, and I am inspired.
Reminds me of some sweet-ass Rygar Diskarmor! I love your art and the music is great but that jump sound gets old after a bit. The game is hard and requires good reflexes and concentration... and that's a good thing! Rad entry. Good work!
AHAHAHAHA that's the first time I've really laughed out loud during this voting period.
Awesome idea. Great artwork and animations. Rockin' soundtrack. Hilarious text. What more could you ask for?
This game deserves a spot in my permanent Games folder. Congrats team!
Wow, you totally nailed the Taito feel. This game took me back to my childhood instantly. I love the pixel art, the feel-good music, and the characters. I feel like I could get attached to this character with some more cutscenes / backstory / etc. It's just a really fun little world.
I'm not a fan of using Z+X to throw, but that's really my only complaint in an otherwise solid entry. The only thing holding this back are the limits that were placed on you by the jam time limit, which is ultimately what you want to end up with. Great job!
And yeah, this is your best LD game yet so congrats to that!
Wow I loved all the music references and the music-based enemies. I only wish the sound effects would've been more musical, too.
Once again you nailed that retro feeling and hit another homerun with a unique cast of characters. That boss fight was especially memorable.
I appreciate having numerous checkpoints as the jump was a little touchy and that one section with the spikes and the lizards shooting ... UGH I DIED SO MUCH! But in the end it was all worth it to fight that boss. I'm glad it wasn't just the typical 'hit 3 times to win' battle, either. I kept wondering how many it would take to finally kill him.
Loved the tuba blow sound effect, too. It's kind of goofy like it should be. Also the line at the end about the tired shoulders.. heh.
I only found 1 of 3 treasures thus far but I hope to go back and find the rest.
Another good entry!
This game is way too short.
If the game was crap, then I wouldn't say that. I want more. I feel like the difficulty really spikes during the long climb without much buildup to it, then the game ends soon after. And this is my only criticism with the game. Length and pacing.
The controls are wonderful, but I would like to have up open doors (since there is no area where jumps are placed near doors). The music is so awesome (especially after learning how you made it) and brings an uneasy feeling to an otherwise happy feeling game. The art is ditto. (It's going to be a term in art books one day, just wait.)
As far as the game itself goes, it's great. Needs more content, but that's always the case for nearly every jam game.
But yeah the theme connection is really missing and that's a shame because I know what you were originally going for and it was aimed perfectly at the theme. If there was an actual boss to fight at the end, then your connection to theme would be great. But with just that floating face that doesn't fight back, it feels less like an enemy and more like a puzzle element. I want a rad paint flinging swooping splooshy squishy boss fight!
I feel like you're becoming the Keith Haring of gamedev. I just hope you never die.
Holy shit a Lock Stock game.
I played til the end. I wept.
Tears of joy!
This is probably my favorite use of theme thus far.
And your characters are always so dang cute I can't stand it!!! (in a good way)
Your pixel art is getting really good. You manage to keep it simple, yet manage to make it feel so lively and buttery smooth. The animations are awesome and bouncy and ooey gooey UGH I WANT TO JUST EAT IT!
That baby crying sound effect though... oh god. I can't stand it. I'm sure that's the point, because a baby crying is an awful sound in real life, too.
MICE POLICE!!! Those mice police pretty much pushed me over the edge into cuteness overload and now I'm dead.
The game IS very easy, though... once you figure out the range of the lego/marble placement. At first it's tricky and they kind of go up a little further than you'd want, but it's still easy to set up a trap and lead that big dumb hungry lizard right to you.
The game is cute but you have the bloody awful murder-death-kill scenes and that's ... UNCONVENTIONAL. And any game that's like Home Alone with mice police is pretty much the best thing ever.
Now can we get a post-compo version where we play as the lizard? I'm sssssssssssssso hungry!
What can I say that hasn't already been said?
I'll say that your approach to the theme was spot-on. You are the weapon. You sacrifice yourself, your progress, your position... for that of your weapon. You can't use your handheld gun to fight other players. You never see them. I think other players may have missed this concept. The weapon is not the one in your hands... it's your strategic placement of traps. In a PVP game, that's pretty fucking unconventional.
It's the best looking RBR jam game thus far.
Music is catchy and gets stuck in my head throughout the day.
The variety in guns and turrets is the best part, although there could be some balancing fixes. But for a jam entry, it's a really satisfying arsenal.
Humor is an odd category for this because the funniest part about the game is what you're allowed to type to other players, something that depends on the player. Even so... the hilarious traps give you a good 4/5 humor score. Being able to type stuff to other players bumps it up to 5/5 for me.
The game is fun with players, although I would like to see some kind of real-time action going on aside from the async stuff. Even if it's just a shadow of the other players, that would really make everything come alive that much more and make it feel more exciting.
Overall I would say this is my 2nd favorite RBR game behind ... you know ... the BEST RBR game. Tight controls, great visuals, awesome music and sfx, lots of content, a unique approach to the theme, and of course... I CAN PLAY AS RAD BOAR!
Making an online game like this is going to hurt your scores because of how people play and rate these things, but I'm glad I was able to play it with a large group so I could give it a proper go.
RUDE BEAR FOREVER
Wow, this reminded me of the old Hyperstudio 'games' I used to make back in the day. A funny story with stylish art and a great use of the theme. Totally unexpected with the PDF, but pleasantly surprised. :D
I mean, I can sit here and talk about how awesome this is and how entertaining it is but instead I'm going to take the time to say that the high school cowboy outlaw is the best character of all times. ALL TIMES.
This reminds me of Flower for obvious reasons. I would've enjoyed dynamic audio to go along with the relaxation of just cruising through the orbit, though. I like the aesthetic you chose, and the atmospheric(lol) music is spot-on.
Maybe I missed something but I didn't notice much of a connection to the theme aside from being able to 'fire' whatever it is that you pick up while in orbot... whether it's other planets or energy or whatever it is. Without having enemies, I guess it's hard to qualify that as a weapon.
While there isn't a goal or a 'purpose' or however you want to define, the experience still manages to be interesting enough to make you think and reflect. Well... for me, at least.
This was a pleasant break from all of the killing I've been doing recently.
Both in AND out of judging LD games.
I'm going to start off with the negatives which I don't like to do but I'm going to get it out of the way.
This game felt too long.
But is that a bad thing? I played it twice and I can't decide why I feel that way. On one hand, more content is good for a game like this, right? More levels, more puzzles, etc. You introduced new ideas (while still using the same mechanics) over time to keep things fresh, and a few levels really stood out to me. The one where you have to follow the ascending orb, break blocks to the left and right, and kill enemies quickly while wall jumping up to stay in the light range... that was awesome. But moments like that were padded out by levels that felt repetitive. If you had just one or two extra mechanics that you could reveal along the way, it would help to break up that feeling. So the solution for me would either be a more streamlined experience with less levels as a whole, or the same amount of levels but with a few extra tricks up your proverbial sleeve.
Does that make it a bad game? Most definitely NOT. The game is great. It's not incredibly innovative or unique, but it controls well. It's consistent. It's challenging without being frustrating. It's a satisfying experience.
Your diffuse shader is awesome. The way it all dynamically shifts the safe playing area ... it really pulls you into the orb that much more. After a while you really start to feel like you NEED it to survive, even though it's just a little pixelated ball. The story that wraps around the whole experience has that same feeling. You did a good job of weaving the player's reality with the narrative. There are lots of parallels going on, and it's interesting to think about.
I also have to thank you for providing controller support, because I always have my controller in hand when playing LD games. If the game doesn't support it, I set up key bindings with XPadder or something similar. The platforming was tight, and I didn't have too much of an issue aside from the ball not going where I wanted it to go. I eventually learned how to control it.
I also like how you don't have to kill EVERYTHING. Most levels have multiple solutions, and this prevented me from getting stuck on more than one occasion. I was having trouble with one enemy so I said, SCREW IT, and went another way. There's some good level design going on here, too. You seem to have a real skill in that department.
As always I look forward to your awesome games, and this was no exception. Keep it up, man!
FYI i TRIED THE wINDOWS BUILD AND ... DAMN. pLAYING YOUR GAME TURNED ON cAPS lOCK HOLD ON. There we go. Your Windows build doesn't seem to work properly. Web build works perfectly, though.
This is a really innovative twist on a classic, and it's a blast to play once you figure it all out. The interface is smooth, the sounds are crisp, and the visuals are consistent.
I got to Wave 31 and could've played longer but I need to save my hands for work!
I'd like to read a post-mortem about how you handled wave progression and balance issues because I never felt overwhelmed or super over-powered (aside from being able to super tap spacebar when maxed out to kill just about any lone enemy). I wanted to see if it was possible to get super far by avoiding a certain upgrade type, so I skipped over the charge/hold key type and was able to progress smoothly. Speed mashing seemed like a better strategy for me, too.
The PUSH KEYS. OH MAN. THE PUSH KEYS. That's a really awesome idea and it totally makes the game. Without them, it wouldn't be nearly as fun. Good job on that.
The best TD I've played so far and actually one of the most fun games AS A WHOLE thus far.
To go against a previous comment, I'm sick of following lines on my screen to press a button in rhythm games. Those games throw a ton of mess on the screen but none of it matters because in the end you're just starting at lines moving downward. Your game isn't like that, and I really appreciate it. I'm actually following the flow of these strange little demons (I call them head boogers) and getting into the action by bouncing left and right with the music. It's a nice change of pace.
I can't get over how much fun level 2 is. I finally managed to flawless it after a while. I tried to do the same on stage 3 but my best so far is 7 misses. You have to give us an OST.
Yeah, visual art isn't your strongest category here but you kept it simple, and it works. I think my least favorite visual aspect is the logo text. The waveform at the bottom and the color selection for the head/headphones/demos ... all pleasing. I actually like the design of the demons. They don't really look like anything I've ever seen before, and I think that's what a demon should be, really.
I didn't have any issues with controls or difficulty like some of the other people, so I can't comment on that. I guess my biggest criticism would be that 'theme' and 'innovation' are only average while 'fun' and 'audio' is 5/5 for me. In the end, nothing is bad about this game at all. It's one of my favorites so far, and has earned a permanent spot in my games folder.
Good job, man!
Wow, that last gun's design is badass looking. This is a REALLLLLY cool concept and an amazing use of the theme. Pixel art is rad, music sets a solid mood, action is face paced, and the guns have a good bit of variety. It looks like an action game but it's a puzzle game. Unfortunately, it's all about trial and error, but it's still a lot of fun. Great entry. One of my favorites thus far!
I GOT GORGON!
It got my blood pumping when I walked into a dark hallway, heard two very distinct grunts... a sound I had come to fear. THEN BOOM I SLASH LEFT AND BOOM I SLASH RIGHT - two clean kills on the beasts. My greatest feat as Gorgon Getter. With my head held high I continued forward into the darkness and GOT GOT BY THE GORGON REGARDLESS.
It's crazy how much 'feeling' you were able to get out of this despite the lack of polish. I don't know if darkness always manages to bring that sense of dread or what, but you definitely brought it.
I like the idea of having to fight a boss with no eyesight when up to that point you've been relying on that light to stay alive. It's almost like an anti-strategy which is perfect for the theme. Having said that, I wish the boss fight relied on positional sound rather than on wavy lines. That would truly bring you into the 'close your eyes' immersion.
I could jot down some further criticisms but I'm sure it would be nothing that you don't already know, and most of it is linked to your limited amount of dev time, so I don't see the point in focusing on that. What you WERE able to do in the time you had is impressive even if it lacks polish and scope.
You see, this is why I love this feedback. I totally didn't catch the stone rats the first few times. I was so petrified with fear I didn't have time to pay attention. That's an awesome bit of detail!
Great atmosphere, especially with the ash particles and the solemn music. I see a lot of people questioning your use of the theme, but I totally understand what you were going for. The gameplay randomness can be unforgiving, but this is war after all. I appreciate your unique approach to the theme.
DOTH HATH UNEVENED AN EVEN. UNODDED AN ODD. THINE MEMORIES OF DAYS GONE PAST BUT NOT YET BYGONE. DOES THOU DOTH KISS THINE MOTHER WITH THAT MOUTH? cyber-fusion
I agree with Tomcat94 on the level design. You did a good job of introducing everything and I never ran into a problem of being confused or unsure of what to do. Awesome core concept, great use of theme, interesting character design, and an engaging story. It's everything you want in a 48 hour game. Oh yeah, and good job on the ambient music! Congrats!
A great start but I want to see where it's going. Unfortunately I can't rate much more than the graphics since the theme and full gameplay potential haven't been shown yet.
Most 'blocky' Unity games are very rigid and lifeless. Yours isn't. The characters are springy and fun, despite the world being very low poly. That's a good contrast... but then you go and add even more contrast with the dark and moody film grain. THEN... you add contrast to that with the friendly hugging mechanics. It's like your entire game is constantly at war with itself, but not in a bad way. The 'weapon' is unconventional, but so is everything else... and that's what makes this game rad. Good job!
I have to applaud you for the unique theme interpretation. A short but sweet dark comedy to brighten up my day of rating LD games. "Let's Slay" made me grown with laughter. Gonna share this one with friends. Good job Richie!
Grown? I meant groan. I'm not drunk right now I swoar.
Holy crap it's the ZP2K dude. I knew this had to be you just from the initial screenshot thumbnail. Ludum Dare is a blast, glad to finally see you on here! :)
I'm not a cat person. But as of today I am a HUGO THE LASERCAT KING person. Awesome use of the theme. Really innovative concept. Hilarious gameplay. Memorable look. If it had a unique soundtrack, this would be the total package. Good work! This is a great entry :D
I beateded it.
I saw you making this game. I loved every second of that.
Then I played it. And I loved MOSTLY every second of that.
If you can type fast and you have a good vocabulary to pull from, and you're quick witted, this game is pretty easy. IN THEORY. But something happens when you start playing. You quickly turn into a bumbling moron capable only of saying things like "CAT FELL TREE HURT HEAD OUCH HELP DOCTOR HOSPITAL NURSE NEEDLE BED SURGERY HEART CANCER EXPLODE DIE DEATH MURDER KILL SATAN"
There should be something the credits for the person that came up with Swagsdale High.
Oh wait... there is... in that long list of words that flies by.
The game is cool, music kinda sucks, but it's simple and repetitive so your brain blocks it out so you can focus on coming up with words. That's a thing, although I'm not sure if you did it on purpose, but you did a good job with that regardless. So while your music skills are lacking, you actual score kinda highly in that category.
The touches you added like the word scroll at the end and the % are welcome additions that serve as a decent reward for the player's hard work.
That jumping flipping boss is a bastard, though... and I killed him with horse rider frank sinatra garden. Fuck yeah.
Cool game, maaaaaaaan.
Whoa this is really clever! Too bad you didn't have time to polish up the audio side of things more, though. That AHA moment when you first slinky up the stairs is great! :D
Can't vote because I haven't submitted the jam game yet but WOW! I just wanted to say that this is lovely on so many awesome levels. Watching you improve over the years has been inspiring to say the least.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH I LOVE IT! Very challenging! I was able to beat it after about 3 tries. Thanks for adding controller support! Love the scanlines effect and the overall look/feel of everything. Implementation of theme wasn't very unique but maaaaaaaaaan this game is smooth and tons of fun. Great entry!
SO COOL!!! It must be awesome getting your kid involved. Welcome to Ludum Dare! Please participate again!
WOW this rules I hate that I didn't see this before the rating period ended. Since the old site died I never really did LD again so it's been hard tracking down all the old accounts! THIS GAME RULES!!!! It's also hilarious and has tons of emergent challenges. LOVE IT
I really feel like you're super close to something truly excellent. These are the kinds of games that I dreamed about making when I was playing my DS regularly. Being able to see both screens at all times and draw runes / symbols whenever with a stylus would be super satisfying to me.
I love the presentation here but like others have said, the puzzles just sort of drop in at full volume and that can scare people off or result in them completely missing the point entirely. Obviously with more time you could've done a little intro bit with a simpler puzzle as a tutorial to at least explain the basics, because ONCE YOU GET IT, you can start putting it together rather quickly. I just personally felt like it was taking a long time to GET IT. Turns out I was barking up the wrong tree for 12 minutes.
Great use of theme and really solid presentation. The drawing IS SO FUCKING SATISFYING! UGHHHHHGHGHGHGHG
Hey look a game based on my college years day dreams! Thanks for making this, I had fun. Got a kick out of the narration and story, graphics are fun and humorous while also envoking nostalgia for those old light gun shooters. Congrats on this one!
As always you pull off a super VISUALLY appealing game despite not considering yourself an artist. Chucking away at that fucking stone is FUN. Learning the symbols, scratching them out, it's all super satisfying to me. I messed around with it just to see how much I could fool it, how much I could scratch off, how fast I could do it, etc... A mechanic like this in a game similar to Papers Please would be EXCELLENT. The connection to theme here is loose and it's not super innovative or anything but HEY, it's fun to play and learn which is a difficult thing to achieve!
Cool start! Gather materials, summon monsters, then raise them or breed them or something? Obviously didn't get to implement everything you wanted but you still made something pretty interesting. Keep going!
Well... I didn't shit myself. I hope. I'm talking about real life now. Also the game. Cool art, funny stuff, needs funny audio to make it really land. Is the order of summons pre determined? Seems like the first one should be he final one.
Yeah... been there. I was so low on time once I cut out the main mechanic. Cool take on the theme, though... trying to do something 'normal' but you keep getting summoned to do demon stuff. XD
Cool as hell! Tricky but satisfying to keep going to see more of that PERFECT art. Thanks for this.
One of my personal favorites from LD55! Thanks for making this
Got addicted to this but honestly not feeling a huge connection to the theme. Having said that, there's a really really badass idea in here somewhere but I'm not sure how to go from what you have to whatever that would be. The idea of keeping the red ones out and splitting them to make more scoring orbs is just a really fun idea. I feel like I don't have enough control over the outcome, so I end up with some lucky shots. It's like a reverse pinball where you want the ball to miss the paddles unless it's a red ball, then you want to keep it in play. The best thing about your idea is that it has actual legs and can be extended beyond the jam. Like I said, there's something really badass in there somewhere and you're really close to finding it. There's more than one person in here hoping to see more of this. Add me to that list!
Fun puzzles! Great cohesion despite admitting to not doing everything yourself from scratch... you STILL made something that looks and sounds like it was pieced together with a singular vision. Everything fits, nothing detracts you from the game in that regard. The puzzles are clever, the connection to theme is rad, you should be proud of this one. Looking forward to what you do next
I love this strange little experiment slathered in ooey gooey juicy goodness and drenched in that THICK chiptune GRAVY. I dig it. You dig? GREAT use of theme and huge innovation points. This scratches an itch I didn't know I still had.
THIS GAME FUCKING RULES! Pictures don't do it justice. Fun as heck, looks groovy, sounds groovier... Really fun mechanics and smooth controls. The game really comes alive when the 'enemies' show up. My favorite part about playing jam games is seeing the potential in something, and this one has my mind going crazy with possibilities. Great work!
You somehow found the perfect speed in which to introduce new mechanics to keep it fresh. Just as about to say OK BEEN THERE DONE THAT you threw something new at me. I also made a game once with a similar ending, so extra points there. Music was great, looked awesome, played like you'd expect... overall pretty great. Not feeling a strong connection to the theme but I still enjoyed all my time with Tao.
Dang this is good. I sorta wish the text at the top didn't vanish and that I could scribble out multiple symbols in rapid succession and drop the ice cream faster. I know that's not what you were all going for but all I'm saying is your game is so damn JUICY! Everything is very cohesive. The art is cute, the different ice creams are entertaining, the way the drawing feels, the music, even the page background... it's just a very nice little package and I enjoyed unwrapping it. Thanks and congrats!
This game reminds me too much of real life! lol this is frustrating as hell but oddly addictive at the same time. I feel like I'm fighting against the universe itself in a never ending battle of attrition. And I've lost. The asshole constantly calling me and messing me up right when the asshole goat bonks his noggin on the asshole cauldron! Hang on I'm gonna go try again...
WHOA the sprites are amazingly done. Great animation, lots of character, cool style... great job! The game obviously needs more time in the oven but what's here is super promising. Would like to play a full version!
Oh look at all the everything! It's all so good. The everything, that is. My only complaint about the whole thing is that the connection to the theme is a bit weak in comparison to the rest of the total package. But just taking it for what it is and for what is presented, this is a triumph. Excellent job!
The only thing holding this back at all is the method for drawing circles. Everything else it top tier, and t here's tons of content here and it's interesting to see what you unlock next. GREAT USE OF THEME! This has a lot of familiar mechanics and elements but it somehow feels completely fresh at the same time. Good freakin job!
That's some good ass art right there. The controls are a little 'sticky' and it's hard to be super precise and quick quick which you really need in a game like this. The connection to the theme is pretty neat and amusing with the summoning requests and portals and dolls... just a cool little idea in general. Good job!
Wow, this is the best looking and playing thing I've played in a bit. I just wish the connection to the theme was stronger because MAN this is such a satisfying thing to witness and control. <3
Was this your meta attempt at the theme? Are you trying to SUMMON John Blow to the fucking comments section???
Just wanna add this shit fucking rules and if it wins we all win
Now we fight with knives
HELL YEAH! I love this. Everything about it rules. Great use of theme, awesome core mechanic, funny audio, all in a browser score attack game. Bookmarking this one! Great job, congrats to the team!
WOW this was deceptively deep and really fun to mess around with. Love the twist on a classic and lots of clever interactions. Directional requirements and positioning was really eye opening in a sort of AHA moment, which happens multiple times. EXCELLENT for rewarding my curiosity. I got stuck a few times but was able to come back and figure some things out. I was never able to beat it though... but I'll keep trying!
WOW, the charm of the characters and the little mouth portal thing is off the charts. Love the crt effect in full screen, dig the retro aesthetic. I got more of a Rainbow Islands vibe with the gameplay style but more of a super famicom Umihara Kuwase vibe to it. It needs some work to be a better platformer, but it does have that cozy feeling of a slower paced platformer back before wall jumps and double jumps ruled the day. KEEP JAMMING!
