LD24 — Evolution

Lucas's Quest Backwards by Volute 2012-08-28T14:09:00

Wow! Your game left me feeling utterly confused, empty, and somehow mentally destabilized... i love it ._.

Great, great humor - I initially wanted to tell you about your floaty movement mechanic and sometimes repetitive level design elements but this crazy weird story just made up for everything.
You had me laughing for the first time this LD - it's just awesome how your characters and the whole game are constantly mocking themselves. Very enjoyable!

Paradigm Shift by LuizHGMonclar 2012-08-27T23:00:00

I found the actual gameplay of shooting things that fall into my pit not fun at all to be honest... but everything leading up to that? I couldn't help it, it literally gave me goosebumps! Man, you should have digged deeper into that, deeper and deeper and deeper.
Leave out the very bland shooting thingamabob and play to your strengths which seem to be evoking emotions through interactive storytelling...

Sorry, i was late! by infernet89 2012-08-27T23:41:00

That was quite fun! It could use some polish on the audiovisual department but you somehow got me hooked... especially mirrored snake was challenging and weirdly satisfying :)

Kryphilis by lajos 2012-08-27T16:51:00

I like the idea but there are some points that made it less fun for me:

- I found it really hard to get them to mingle most of the time, the controls are a little unintuitive in my opinion.

- The balancing and pacing isn't quite right. I couldn't focus on the inheritance aspect of it at all, because they all die so quickly. A smaller portion of the map with less people and a bit more longevity would probably have fit this well.

Nonetheless, I think there is a really fun mechanic hiding in there, you just need to get it out somehow. ;)

Digital Evolution by TheJackiMonster by TheJackiMonster 2012-08-27T17:27:00

With something as simple as a basic platformer you really have to concentrate on making the basic gameplay elements fun. In this case running, jumping, and fighting.
Sadly none of them are fun at the moment, they are just too slow and not thrilling at all.

You should make a post-compo version and give us more running and jumping... hence the name "Jump n' Run"! ;)

Guardian of the Evolution by aare 2012-08-28T00:00:00

You're right about something lacking from the design... I can't put my finger on it right now but it feels like it's missing focus somehow.
Apart from that it's solidly executed and deserves big bonus points for the pixel penis! ;)

B07s by Moebius 2012-08-27T22:43:00

Hey! I think what your game would have used is lots and lots of actual game design work. It kinda feels like you spent all your time writing the engine and the random level generation from scratch (although of course that's just an assumption ;)) while you really should have elaborated on your base mechanics...
Sneaking past higher security robots and chasing weaker ones could be a lot of fun if it weren't for the really unprecise and unpolished movement and the randomly generated levels which feel pretty much just like that... random.

I would put my finger on time issues here ;)

RE-evolution: The Legend of Hopper by andreyin 2012-08-27T16:09:00

I really liked the atmosphere and story that you create in the beginning! Graphics and sound really do fit very well!
Sadly, the game is just too hard! Checkpoints (right at the beginning of the cave) and way less health for the enemies would really fit this well.
I almost made the same mistake on my own game but luckily noticed how my girlfriend was constantly raging while trying to beat the game so i toned it down quite a bit in the end.

I vote for a post-compo so i can see the credits! ;)

Ancestry Haters by raver 2012-08-28T13:24:00

I really enjoyed it and yes, we want moar!
More interesting level designs, especially!
The puzzles immediately set my brain into braid mode and I had fun while it lasted! :)

Gene Binder by xhunterko 2012-08-28T00:09:00

Once I figured out how to actually play (which took me a minute despite you tutorial) I was actually sad that there weren't more levels. I smell day one DLC here ;)
An extra layer of gameplay would have been nice.

Complexitivity by Accidental Rebel 2012-08-28T12:51:00

It's a really well presented arcade game, i liked it.
My main criticism would be that you should have tweaked the movement a lot. It's way to floaty and imprecise at the moment which creates an artificial difficulty. That doesn't feel right for a game about movement and reflexes.
Apart from that it's quite fun and has even more potential to expand upon (think different height levels, for example).

Lucid by Redream 2012-08-28T13:17:00

Hey! It was really interesting playing your entry, because we took quite a similar approach to the theme.
I love how you set up the mood through your graphics and music and I realized while playing that I should have gone for something similar, especially music wise.
The only things that bothered me were movement and controls. Movement didn't feel very polished or balanced and you could have easily added the arrow keys to your control scheme (just as I should have added WASD :D).

I liked it a lot and I would love to hear what you think about my game... they compare quite nicely. :)

Cytosine by Frozen Fractal 2012-08-27T16:30:00

This is really, really nicely designed... at some point it felt like the enemies really consciously tried to piss me off (in a good way ;)). I like the music and sounds, I like the clean visuals and great particle effects, it's a very well rounded game!
I personally think you could have played even more to your strengths and highlighted the evolutionary part of the gameplay more.

Also: This is addicting... I desperately need a highscore to show off! :D

The Voynich Experiment by Wan 2012-08-27T22:07:00

I liked it even though it's quite rough around some edges (e.g. the collision detection edges ;)).

The one thing it lacks, in my opinion, is some interesting level designs and a proper ending (apart from the "improper" ending which was lovely :D).

Lovely audio and graphics, though!

LD25 — You are the Villain

Who is the villain? by davidllanos22 2013-01-04T13:26:00

A nice idea to build on. I found it too easy and repetitive, though!

Smite the King! by MortalWombat 2012-12-18T13:15:00

Hey, thanks a lot for playing!
Yeah, there's no saving or loading as I intended it to play a little 'rogue-likey'. But there is a way to roughly tell the strength of an enemy without fighting her/him. Also, the outer regions are generally more high-level than the inner ones.

Smite the King! by MortalWombat 2013-01-04T15:53:00

@Mago: The trick is to carefully level up before going into the outer areas. Also exploiting bad pathfinding and sticking to a certain type of attack :)

(I'm giving away too mich here)

I've made it through a couple of times (with sweaty palms, though)! :)

Evil Keeper by XmmmX 2013-01-04T14:35:00

Doesn't start for me on Win 7.

The Adventures of Master Bad Guy by BipoleMoment 2013-01-04T13:51:00

Runs like a charm under linux (if you've got pygame installed)!

I actually chuckled because it was all so clumsily executed :)
Nice one! ;)

Mr. Cylinder by Harsay 2013-01-04T13:32:00

Hey! That's a good start, you should build on that! :)

One tip regarding the pixel graphics:
You should really stick to one size of pixels (Mr. Cylinder in this case has much bigger pixels than his surroundings) to achieve a more coherent look.
At least that's how I feel about it.

Keep making games!

The Tim Thomery Extravaganza!!! by ElliotCollis 2013-01-04T14:51:00

A very nice first entry!

As so many others have said already, the level design is unfair a lot of times. You should really redo that to see and feel the difference.

The Great Train Robbery by monkeymad2 2013-01-04T15:59:00

Awesome and charming! Laughed out loud and made CHOO CHOO noises the entire time. Highly recommendable!

I felt like I was right there in your head while you realised that you're running out of time for the compo... great job!

One Armed Invader by PapyPilgrim 2013-01-04T15:42:00

Very nice!
I ended up not being able to recover, though, because I lost all my men...

Is there a winning condition?

Susie's Xmas Hit List by AdricZero 2013-01-04T14:58:00

I didn't really understand the win/lose conditions. It said that I lost (children got their presents) whenever I shot all the reindeer...

The Thief by delpes 2013-01-04T14:43:00

Mhmm, nom, nom, nom! Lovely!

HenchManager by Maato 2013-01-04T14:33:00

Solid game!

Controls didn't feel very good to me.

Unhappy Holidays! by GeorgeBroussard 2013-01-04T13:15:00

Very lovely!
A simple idea, but very well executed.

Some sort of theme for each of the different levels or something to differentiate them would have made it more exciting.

BREAK! by LucaPavone 2013-01-04T14:53:00

"You will have to log into a Google Account and Google Drive/Docs to download it."

That is very unnecessary and prevented me from playing. Why not throw it on a one-click-hoster somewhere? Done in a matter of minutes...

Chaos! by MadcoreTom 2013-01-04T14:25:00

Beautiful and weird! :)

Execution Chamber (Now a Jam entry) by Kaslai 2013-01-04T15:50:00

Whohooo!

Awesome and technically as well as audiovisually ambitious!

LD33 — You are the Monster

Space Pong by MortalWombat 2015-08-25T22:32:00

@crucknuk I would have loved to put local multiplayer with splitscreen in but the time was just to short. I will definitely make a post compo version at some point, though.

Space Pong by MortalWombat 2015-08-25T23:25:00

@thebmxeur
Thanks for pointing that out, I'm going to look into it tomorrow!

Space Pong by MortalWombat 2015-08-25T23:35:00

@thebmxeur
Okay, I actually fixed it just now. Thanks again!

Space Pong by MortalWombat 2015-08-25T23:36:00

Also: yeah, handmade hero is awesome!

Space Pong by MortalWombat 2015-08-26T20:53:00

Okay, so for some reason the fixed windows version didn't upload correctly yesterday. The task should now terminate correctly on closing via clicking the 'X' on your window decorations.

Osuldorb by danidre14 2015-08-25T21:16:00

I liked the weird story elements! The contrast between the different world tiles and especially the moving platforms and the background is too low (too much grey!). It would be cool if you wouldn't have too start over completely everytime you die. Cool entry!

stacktrace by TheMorfeus 2015-08-25T21:50:00

Pretty cool game!

Some things are _very_ annoying though:
- Having to constantly use the mouse to click run and then click back into the editor
- Not being able to move the caret. I don't know what drove this decision
- The weird operator order: B A OP. I can understand wanting to make it unique but this makes it even less accessible and does not add anything to the game in my opinion

Overall I really liked it though, I'd actually love to know more about the story but it is a little too cumbersome for me right now. The PDFs rock! I really like the idea of having "real" documents that explain stuff about the game. Reminds me of oldschool game manuals with lots of cool stuff in them.

Also, I find it pretty ironic how a game about assembly programming is written in Java. That's not a negative of course, just a remark. ;-)

stacktrace by TheMorfeus 2015-08-25T23:20:00

So I really like RPN for my calculators (I've been using an old HP 48G all my life, all the time). Also, I programmed my own little virtual machine a while back which uses a stack and thus RPN (it also has the weirdest "syntax"... take a look: https://github.com/mathkr/pound).

I actually just looked into your manual again to see what it says about pushing operands, and lo and behold it says it black on white.

But maybe you could make it a little more clear by pointing out that A B MUL really isn't one instruction like you would expect coming from x86 asm but rather three instructions:

push A
push B
mul

Also showing the top of the stack (maybe the top 4 or 8 items) could maybe give a better feel?

An usual Day In a Troll's life by ajopart 2015-08-25T21:25:00

Not super thrilled. You should have spent a more time on the basic movement code as it does not feel very good! Keys get "stuck" when you press multiple directions at once and don't behave well. The level selection screen is really cool! Sexual assault is _not_ a "fun" topic.

Jenkaiu by PeYMaN 2015-08-25T20:59:00

I liked it! The "Player's Turn" notice disturbs the flow a bit because you can't keep playing while it is showing. It would feel a little more snappy if you wouldn't have to wait or had a better audiovisual indication of exactly when one can press again.

PONY! by Phil Strahl 2015-08-25T22:14:00

I had two really pleasant minutes with your game. It is definitely better than you make it out to be. Your visuals are superb and the de_dust reference was delightful.

Only negative: not actually offensive!

Free Hugs Kraken by crucknuk 2015-08-25T22:40:00

Cool idea!

I love the theme and story idea. Very nice.

The hug minigame is too easy in my opinion. I didn't get to 5000 points as it seemed like it would take ages.

Tenebrous Expanse by WubAlliance 2015-08-25T22:31:00

Nice game!

Presentation wise the game is excellent, but mechanically I think it is lacking.

- There are not enough consequences for bad play. In fact it is really hard to tell when a move was good.
- The mechanics are too simple even when going for a "moody" kind of game. The whole "creating shadows" really should have some gameplay consequences.
- It doesn't really make sense that you have to click directly on the dot to move it when you could start dragging everywhere, really.

I think gameplay wise you guys could have made some bolder decisions and put a little more direction in.

As I said at the top, the presentation is really good. Not much to nag about there.
You should have compressed your audio, over 200 MB is pretty unacceptable.

Jello Adventure by FirebrushStudios 2015-08-25T22:07:00

I have to say I did not quite get the mechanics. I was not clear on why I should bother with all these different transformations as I could mostly just run through. I think the game would have greatly benefited from having just one or two simple but interesting rules and more fleshed out levels in which you actually have to use these rules to acomplish something.

The visuals and the controls are quite good. Audio _kicks ass_, really liked that!
