I can't play the game, when running the exe it opens a black window and then suddenly closes it.
I am on a Windows XP SP3 machine with Java version "1.7.0_05".

vordux 2012-08-27 21:55

This is a really nice concept, a little explanation in the comments behind the methods you used to develop the mechanics would have been nice. For instance, I assume that the levels are randomly generated, talk about this.

The art looks nice and all fits together consistently.

Good attempt and idea.

kevincorrigan 2012-08-27 22:26

Sorry, doesn't work for me, same as the first comment.

mortalwombat 2012-08-27 22:43

Hey! I think what your game would have used is lots and lots of actual game design work. It kinda feels like you spent all your time writing the engine and the random level generation from scratch (although of course that's just an assumption ;)) while you really should have elaborated on your base mechanics...
Sneaking past higher security robots and chasing weaker ones could be a lot of fun if it weren't for the really unprecise and unpolished movement and the randomly generated levels which feel pretty much just like that... random.

I would put my finger on time issues here ;)

entrusc 2012-08-28 07:38

Yes - time was the issue here ;) I planned a lot of more things to do. Starting by more blocks down to items and different shaped rooms.

I still develop on this game but of course this is a version freeze for this contest :)

As for the XP issue - I had no time to test the game on various platforms. I will try to get my hands on some XP machine to check that out. In the meantime if you are running XP and have the black screen issue, open up the commandline, start it with "java -Xmx1G -jar b07.exe" and paste the result as a comment here. This would help me a lot - thanks! :)

I actually had alot of fun with this one. Nice graphics and movement. But the levels feel a little to like just random 10x10 rooms. A little variation can go along way. But still awesome game!

dekart 2012-08-28 15:25

Not really sure what went wrong, but it's stuck at "creting level" message for minutes.

krides 2012-08-28 20:10

Wasn't able to run it, got stuck at "creating level" even though I did as you suggested.

ratking 2012-08-28 20:14

Uhm, interesting concept, but ...

I started it. I died instantly. I restarted it. I landed in a level without any bots?! I restarted it again, and died again within some seconds.

Perhaps adding some kind of health would have been a good idea. It's just too hard now. But the visuals are nice.

entrusc 2012-08-28 20:33

If you are stuck at "creating level" try running it from command line with "java -Xmx1G -jar b07.exe" or "java -Xmx1G -jar b07.jar" and please post the resulting output as comment. Thanks a lot!

imef 2012-08-30 01:11

The graphics seem really amazing! But it was lagging like hell when I played because I don't have a very good PC...
Still, great job!

acdimalev 2012-08-30 20:09

Wowhereallymovesfast.

I can't really comment on gameplay here. Looking around feels natural, but the moment I try to move forward, it feels like I'm wearing rocket shoes. If you haven't already, you might want to try just slowing down the player's walk speed and see if it benefits the gameplay.

Gameplay aside, the aesthetics of the game are nice and it's a classy theme. I would be interested in seeing future versions of this game.

cipher 2012-09-01 13:48

Same problem as the first guy, shame, looks nice...

jamiebell-oldtopman 2012-09-01 19:26

oldtopman:
I'm not going to be able to rate it here. I have too low of a framerate to do much except move the mouse about. Also: the screen is a bit wide for my display, but not intolerably so, just the X button on the right side.

38leinad 2012-09-01 21:12

nice game with nice graphics. could maybe use some more sound to support the atmosphere but except from that it plays nicely.

how much time did you spent to learn JMonkey to acomplish something like this? just out of curiosity because I just heard about it...

entrusc 2012-09-01 22:49

I'm programming a game engine called moebius (http://www.moebius-engine.net) for over one year now using jmonkey. So I have some idea of jmonkey ;) But before that I didn't code any 3D game for a long time ...

gritfish 2012-09-02 04:19

The bad: After about 5 goes, I didn't find a bot with a lower level than mine. The mouse sensitivity was REALLY low, too.

The good: I had some fun moments, running and hiding from bots till I could see their backs to tell if I could 'eat' them.

A mini-map would have helped this game immensely. I think if I could see WHERE to go to find the lower-level bots, instead of running blindly, this could be the start of a really good stealth game.

azurenimbus 2012-09-04 18:32

Nice concept. I definitely think level design is what would bring it forward. In my first try I spent several minutes walking back and forth without anything happening and then was shot dead by something I didn't even see.

Now that you've created the engine, you could spend a couple of days making a post-compo version and focusing on these aspects. :) Good job overall!

raptor85 2012-09-07 12:39

it's interesting, not quite sure the "evolution" tie in though. Level start seems pretty random, sometimes i find tons of bots sometimes there's none to be found searching around everywhere, often none of them are lower level than you. For some reason it's super super laggy for a good 10-20 seconds at start then "pop!" it's fine, running at a few hundred fps.

n0w33t0rs 2012-09-08 06:48

Sometimes its hard to know from where you have been killed. I think a small warning when something is near you would help.

khayet 2012-09-11 15:39

Nice concept, I had a few panic-moments when robots started chasing me. I like the graphics engine and the randomly generated levels, this must have been a lot of work.

The frequence of the enemy robots seems a little too random. One time I got killed right at the start, another time I couldn't find a single robot for like a minute. I also didn't know at first that I don't need to press a key to consume a robot.

Also: Lack of music and only one(?) sound effect.

sfx 2012-09-16 13:34

Not really seeing what this has to do with the theme. Also, I don't know which bots have lower security clearance than me.
