LD24 — Evolution

Shit! It's evolving by fruitfly 2012-08-27T17:25:00

I seem to be stuck at the loading screen on both web and download. I tried both Chrome and Firefox to open it, both have the same results.

I really want to play this game, it looks great and I want to check out your bespoke raycasting engine.

Natural Selection: Travel Agency by lightspeedlucas 2012-08-27T16:47:00

Pretty cool, didn't get the intuition of the controls until I played it for a bit.

Pretty nice overall, played it for a bit and enjoyed it the whole time.

The Darkness Evolve!! by juaxix 2012-08-27T14:19:00

Cool use of the technologies that you've used to implement the game.

Some issues with the camera lead to a disorientating experience however during the game.

Deal with It by midgard 2012-08-27T22:32:00

I really didn't like the blatant references to internet memes, I personally felt that it cheapened the game.

The game itself is alright though, a decent classic plat former with some difficulty to challenge the player.

The Singularity is Here! by josefnpat 2012-08-27T17:52:00

That's some star fox I see there.

Congrats on the effort of doing all your own voice acting.

Pretty cool game. Loved the background effect.

Bored Bob by OmarShehata 2012-08-27T22:36:00

Excellent game, some really good visuals and the audio was spot on as well. A great, solid idea for a game mechanic, would make really enjoyable game if you fleshed this out into something more.

Darwin's Odyssey by Edd Morgan 2012-08-27T17:01:00

Pretty fun to play. Later stages take a little too long though.

deevo by TheSheep 2012-08-27T17:45:00

Some low FPS on my machine for some reason, also a lack of sound.

The art is really good though, I can see you have a pretty good and unique style.

Super Robocade by VoEC 2012-08-27T22:23:00

Nice implentation of old school gaming styles with the theme. Graphics were a pleasure and so was the audio, the overall game tied in really nicely together. Good job.

evolving by pjchardt 2012-08-27T15:16:00

That was cool, great idea about mutating the mechanics of the player and having it react to their gameplay. If you had more time or kept working on this, you have the potential to create a very interesting and thoughtful platformer.

However, I felt that the sound effects did not compliment the art style or music.

Cubevo by NostraDamon 2012-08-27T22:16:00

That was a really good experience, relaxing but needed planning and thought to be able to progress.

I haven't made it to a 100%, but I am getting close, there are a few areas that need to be done systematically or it's all over..

Good intelligent design, graphics and audio.

SURVIVE by Ragzouken 2012-08-27T13:03:00

Great concept, nice graphics as well, the consistency helped create a nice feel for the game.

I had to disable my sound, the game was better. Apart from that it was fun to play.

Cool game.

DNA Wars by nka 2012-08-27T12:20:00

The game progressed at a good rate, the start was paced well enough so that I was able to get to grips with the mechanics. After then I had fun developing the DNA sequence.

Graphics were good and consistent, the sound added to the game without becoming repetitive or distracting.

Oculus Battalion by Maxium 2012-08-27T17:11:00

Great game! visual are excellent, the style is really nice as well, reminds me of Chu Chu rocket for some reason.

Really cool mechanics.

I also like the reference to NetHack

Tad's Adventure by dalbinblue 2012-08-27T14:43:00

Super retro game, with some excellent graphics and audio.

Cellception by DiG 2012-08-27T22:20:00

I always wondered what Beutiful Katamari would look like in 2D and if it would work, well it seems like you nailed that mechanic really well. The game was fun and you captured the theme well as well.

My only critique is the music, there was an element of repetitiveness I found.

EVILUTION by GothFraex 2012-08-27T14:36:00

Pretty awesome that you have used SDL and C++, I'll be reading the source code out of curiosity to see what you've done to achieve this.

GeometryEvo by dvdking 2012-08-27T22:00:00

The idea behind it was decent, especially the geometric shapes. The line eating made me laugh. The music however was quite monotonous, at the end mostly; the piano was quite grating.

This could be fleshed out to a bigger game with more stages, I think it would be quite enjoyable

Chrysalis Choice by RobKat 2012-08-27T21:33:00

I too like to take acid and make games.

Unlikely Companion by alyphen 2012-08-27T15:46:00

It was a pretty cool idea, especially the companions. However, the game became really hectic at times and there was lots happening on-screen.

The gameplay is pretty solid and quite a good experience.

alteration by rusticated 2012-08-27T21:50:00

Your pixel art style is nice and so is your music. I personally am not a fan of games like this, but I can see for someone who is into the genre it would be really interesting, especially with the switches.

Really nice effort.

The evolution related game of death! by Gareth001 2012-08-27T17:14:00

Pretty cool game, was a bit lost at the start, but it came clear after a while.

Good job.

Unstable Planet by HunLyxxod 2012-08-27T22:06:00

I didn't see how this related to the theme too much. The game was pretty cool though and I liked the responsiveness and feel of the players movement.

Dusty Balls by ThatSamu 2012-08-27T22:26:00

That was really cool, I agree that it reminds me of 'The Ball' in terms of its art style. Your game play mechanic with the split screen was excellent.

How Mosquito Became Human by SaintHeiser 2012-08-27T13:34:00

Very difficult gameplay, really reminded of some of the titles from the Amiga era. I loved the ending, it felt rewarding once I got there.

The music was really good, again it captured some of the memories I had from Amiga titles.

Graphics were excellent also, the overall style was fitting and enjoyable.

Great game.

Evolve Munch! by nickusername1 2012-08-27T17:16:00

pretty neat little idea, I would have liked the gameplay to be extended however.

Primeval Labs by BMacIntosh 2012-08-27T21:42:00

That was a really fun game, especially for a shmup fan like myself. The only thing I will say is that I felt that the game was too easy for myself, in respect to the amount of damage that I was taking.

Really interesting evolution mechanic with the enemies. This game has much potential if you spent time working on it more.

Guardian of the Evolution by aare 2012-08-27T16:51:00

I liked the cycloptic human better than the currently one. I liked your art style, cute sounds as well.

My Apartment by SpectreNectar 2012-08-27T14:24:00

Got to 93% done and then failed. I was so close...

Funny implementation of the theme. Good effort for the game.

terravolve by Vordux 2012-08-27T12:52:00

internet89, this is due to the fact you are running on Windows xp I am afraid, DirectX10 is compatible with Vista machines and above I am afraid mate.

terravolve by Vordux 2012-08-27T13:48:00

If you're running Windows xp, you can't play the game guys I'm afraid, you need Vista or greater with a graphics card that supports d3d10, sorry

terravolve by Vordux 2012-08-27T15:17:00

NatNoBrains, just got some friends to test the link, it seems to be working, try a different browser or refresh. I hope it works for you.

terravolve by Vordux 2012-08-27T22:41:00

That's unfortunate BMacIntosh, I have had a friend test it on their machine and it worked fine. It might be a driver compatibility issue or among a numerous amount of other issues, I don't think there is much I can do however mate. I will look into it and see if there are any compatibility issues on the internet relating to D3D10 applications.

Absorption by sgehlich 2012-08-27T13:47:00

Very consistent with its style and atmosphere, the sound really helped bring out the mood.

The gameplay was fulfilling and rewarding. Graphically it was nice, the addition to minor details, such as the small movement of shimmer on the particles.

Good experience.

Firefly by timtipgames 2012-08-27T16:03:00

Nice theme and game. It is pretty relaxing and interesting.

Darwin In Space by Misericorde 2012-08-27T14:39:00

I liked the banana reference.
This game made me chuckle, Good job.

B07s by Moebius 2012-08-27T21:55:00

This is a really nice concept, a little explanation in the comments behind the methods you used to develop the mechanics would have been nice. For instance, I assume that the levels are randomly generated, talk about this.

The art looks nice and all fits together consistently.

Good attempt and idea.

DNA Soup by Prealpha 2012-08-27T14:57:00

After around level 10 I found that the player can become incredibly overpowered, by choosing quicker DNA if it is available.
You have some nice ideas, for instance, at the start it seemed like it was going to be a game of reflexes against the invading enemy cells, this element dissipates around the level 10 mark, as I previously said. If you sustained the difficulty as the player gains levels and reward them in other areas to representation, the game would consistently be fun.

There is much potential for the various mechanics you have incorporated here, overall this is a good job. The graphics work well in the games favor, everything is easy to see and understand.

Good game with much promise.

DNA Soup by Prealpha 2012-08-27T15:29:00

Thanks for pointing out the issue I had on the instructions screen. Sleep deprivation had sent me insane.

Natural Selection: breeding by God by ripatti 2012-08-27T15:57:00

That was incredible, the fact that this is raw d3d really impressed me, and technically the developer console was great to see. I will really enjoy reading the source code later, it looks like there is much I can learn from your game.

The game is great, you've adapted the doodle god style into something better and more enjoyable. The combinations make sense and the results of them are realistic.

The graphics are amazing, also the sound effects and music.

This is a game I will be coming back to and playing again.

Natural Selection: breeding by God by ripatti 2012-08-28T10:24:00

Just came back to say, after playing about 60 games, this has been my favorite.

Alien Rockpool by DustyStylus 2012-08-27T22:04:00

Your concept behind this it quite unique and interesting. It was an enjoyable experience.

Tiktaalik's Tale by _AM_ 2012-08-27T15:02:00

Now that you have found out this comment is incomplete, please press ALT+F4 to continue.

Growing Tree by Devaki 2012-08-27T22:29:00

I got to the end of a branch and then it stopped. It was a great concept however, I've never really seen that idea implemented before, just be mindful in the future of the camera more.

Cool game.

RedArmy by Loyalty 2012-08-27T17:22:00

Nice to see something made in the censoriously complicated Blender game engine. I don't think it portrayed the theme well, but the idea of turning the level was pretty smart.

Good job.

Convergent by willh 2012-08-27T13:55:00

Very interesting adaptation of the concept and also control schemes in game in general.

I found my mind and eyes crossing between tasks, it was enjoyable, at times I felt the strain of balancing the chaos that was going on.

Experiment X by XmmmX 2012-08-27T12:33:00

The progression of the game was quite slow, and the jump in difficulty from the levels was rather drastic. I liked how you incorporated a variety of effects, for instance the floating particles after a pickup.

I liked the oldschool feel of the game, reminded me of some dungeon crawlers back in the day.

The surfaces that effect the player were also a nice touch.

Overall, quite enjoyable, just sometimes slow to progress.

Rise of a Colony by Folis 2012-08-27T13:37:00

Good to see you gave it a shot even though you were short on time.

Nice game, you managed to get some elements of the old settlers game in there.

The colour pallet for the game was well chosen as well.

Rise of the Meebas by Jimjam 2012-08-27T17:33:00

It was a nice concept, good consistent colour pallet across the board. Nice to see a unique use of unity, You have some implementations that I haven't seen in the other unity games here.

The main audio loop is a bit annoying after some time. The sound and atmosphere you were going for was achieved though, so no worries.

Overall, cool concept and gameplay!

Upgrade by Fenmar 2012-08-27T14:29:00

Nice to see a HTML5 game, the 3D was smooth and I liked little details like the squares lighting up.

Your idea behind using one level and adapting it based on player-met conditions is excellent. Something I would like to see implemented in other games in a variety of ways.

Deep Sea Fish Loves You Forever by agersant 2012-08-27T17:43:00

Music and sound was incredible, great compliment to the art style.

I don't see too much how the competitions theme fits massively.

Overall, the game was great and very much an enjoyable experience.

Super Conga Kat by steve 2012-08-27T12:40:00

Challenging game with a throwback to the likes of difficulty of VVVVVV at times.

Graphics were nice and consistent and the audio compliment the overall retro and simplistic style well.

Gameplay mechanics were balanced out well and the cats and player cat behaved well in my favor when precision was needed at certain areas that were challenging.

Super Conga Kat by steve 2012-08-28T13:02:00

One of the best games here, lots of re playability and your source code is educational.

The Kittelutioning by Norgg 2012-08-27T13:52:00

Really funny game, the voice acting helped exemplify the humor and fun.

cuboidAI by JH 2012-08-27T18:20:00

Incredible demonstration of technical skill. This is a great simulation and I will enjoy reading the source code.

Combine And Conquer by Lucas Tiridath 2012-08-27T12:41:00

I like the concept of the game, some interesting elements in there.

The World Tree by shinD 2012-08-27T14:05:00

Something very unique and interesting about this game, albeit simple, you capture a variety of definitive elements that worked harmoniously together.

I loved your particles, and various touches to the graphical side of the game, I'll have fun reading the source code.

Excellent game.

Evil Lucien by Blobby101 2012-08-27T18:38:00

Nice shader use and overall graphics. I see what you were aiming for, shame it didn't get completed.

I don't think it would hurt to continue developing this game, as it looks as though it could be pretty decent.

Complexitivity by Accidental Rebel 2012-08-27T18:27:00

I liked your little secret (to do with looking). I am one of those people apparently.

The setting of this was really cool, the screens and animations on them were pretty smart.

Cool stuff!

Slime Slayer by Mjiig 2012-08-27T15:26:00

You really needed to include more information for the player to understand what all of the numbers on the screen were, it is simple to remember, but could make it a bit annoying for some.

Good effort all around though.

The Adventures of Box Man by Arkazon 2012-08-27T17:17:00

Keeping this saved. Nice game.

The Adventures of Box Man by Arkazon 2012-08-28T23:52:00

Incredible, I've played this to death.

The Darwinizer by Steven Colling 2012-08-27T13:42:00

Nice game, I like thr throwback to the rogue-like gameplay mechanics and dare I say minor Pokemon influence.

Fun to play with some nice graphics and sound.

EVO - X by GFM 2012-08-27T14:33:00

Nice graphics, looked like a GBA game, which I thought was cool. A greater visual representation of what was occurring would have been nice, as it was somewhat confusing at times.

A good game, nice to see how you've created your style.

Project "E" by RobProductions 2012-08-27T17:37:00

The overall idea behind the game is really good, it could make for a well fleshed out puzzle game if it was refined with extra mechanics.

Good game, good thought behind and also nice music and sound effects!

Alivolv by Pixelbear 2012-08-27T17:48:00

Really challenging, but you nailed some core gameplay mechanics down very nicely. The game was fun to play and the art and sound worked well together.

Evo Fight by Skoggy 2012-08-27T15:08:00

Graphics are good, I liked the animation on the energy being released after a fireball.

Nice touch that you implemented your own sound sfx, I feel pretty naughty after hearing you pant and grunt for so long though :$

However, I noticed if I spam fireball, I can win every time against the AI. Against a real player, it is a different matter though and is quite enjoyable. I'll keep this to play against some of my friends.

Nice game with good detail and touches.

Wormelution by cappelnord 2012-08-27T14:16:00

As others said, polished game, clean controls and style.

Good incorporation of the theme, an enjoyable experience, an intelligent design that forces the player to think about how they should interact with the ai to progress.

Dawn by SteelRaven7 2012-08-27T12:50:00

I liked the style and the way you combined the elements of 2D and 3D, as others said however, the figuring out the controls made it frustrating. I can understand this was part of the design choice, but perhaps it would have been good to relay this information to the player in another manner that fitted with your concept.

Graphics were fun, I liked the texture, reminded me of Doom in some places for some reason.

Animations were funny as well.

Good job.

Evidently by jamioflan 2012-08-27T12:44:00

A hilarious concept, you captured elements of what your were trying to portray rather well. This is one I'll be showing my friends.

Cytosine by Frozen Fractal 2012-08-27T21:46:00

That was a really solid experience, great use of the implemented web technologies.

A really well thought out concept with some great mechanics, I appreciate you uploading a how it works.

Great game.

Geometry by hungyg 2012-08-27T15:50:00

I'm a sucker for games like this, the Geometry Wars inspiration is excellent, and you've also nicely implemented the theme with the upgrades. Both of these elements work really well together.

One thing I noticed however, is that it doesn't seem to check if there are a certain amount of enemies on screen at once, and so, they can accumulate to a monstrous hordes that are impossible to overcome.

This game is pretty solid regardless and enjoyable.

Parthenogenesis by kakuremino 2012-08-27T12:58:00

Bit of a dodgy download service with pop ups, I'd recommend making a drop box account and using that instead next time, it's free.

Some excellent effects in there that made it a good experience, for instance, the death screen.

Some bugs were present, like the player getting stuck if they moved back to the perimeter of the zone.

Good incorporation of the concept, I liked the perspective you took on the theme.
