LD23 — Tiny World

Tiny Hack/ by Ace 2012-04-25T09:41:00

It's a nice game, and I'm impressed you finished this with C++ (But on a side question, was there any reason you chose C++ over something more suited to rapid development like flash?)

Now about the game, first, I think you should have enabled movement with arrow keys as well as WASD, and made the casting spells some other button. The casting spells didn't work for me for some reason.

Also I think you should make the next wave only start after the current wave finishes so that you're not overwhelmed with enemies.

You chose a fun mechanic, but it's only fun so long as you are hooking the player. You need to be introducing new things otherwise people will get bored.

Also I'm curious as to how this relates to the theme aside from having "tiny" in the name :P

Giant's Crash ! by Hatscat 2012-04-25T12:26:00

Game was pretty awesome, and the double jump actually felt pretty nice!

I felt the game was a bit too unforgiving though. I died about 10 times and only managed to get 2 of the collectables. I think if you simply increase the jump height a tad I would have played for a lot more. Exploring the world felt pretty nice.

Lighthouse by gritfish 2012-04-25T12:18:00

I really love the mechanic! It adds a whole new dimension of depth to a 2D game. I didn't actually know that I had to click on the dots to rotate at first but it was pretty awesome after I figured that out!

Asylum by Orni 2012-04-28T08:04:00

I thought the beginning took seriously *way* too long. I was tempted to quit had it not been for the mention on indiegames.com

But then when I actually got to the game it was pretty awesome. You should definitely put some sounds even now though.

Let me take a crack at interpreting the game. So perhaps this monster is basically the embodiment of the realization that he is a crazy man stuck in an asylum. And the less he takes the pills, the crazier he gets but the happier he gets as reality slips away.

So as the pills bring back reality crashing down, they also bring back the monster. And the scene at the end is basically him being forced to take the pills.

Gnome Alone by Matt Rudder 2012-04-28T07:44:00

Pretty cool game.

The only annoying thing was that the camera movement was slower than my movement so that made me have to stop every few seconds to let the camera catch up.

The First Frontier by Nickardson 2012-04-25T12:49:00

Pretty cool game. I think some audio would have really made a difference. As well as maybe some other gameplay elements to keep things interesting.

The Great Adventure of Mr.Galaxis by TobiasNL 2012-04-26T18:53:00

Really enjoyed this game and not much to complain about..

BUT! i feel like the movement should be "go in the direction you press the button" not "accelerate and steer" it makes things really difficult and seems unfair with the small number of lifes you get

I found out that i survived alot longer if i just revolved around the planet (ocasionally going to get gold (or are those lemons?)) :P

also the pacing felt very slow because it seems like you need ALOT of gold to unlock the other levels :(

otherwise... really nice game.. one of the best i've played so far.. i like the level of polish :) HIGH FIVE for that

Around the World in 80 Seconds (or less) by gormio 2012-04-25T12:43:00

Well, as you mentioned there's technically no challenge, I'll comment on the engine instead.

I am amazed whenever someone completed a game with C++ in 48 or 72 hours, and I have to ask, is there any reason why you specifically chose that over something more suited to rapid development like flash?

The engine works really awesomely. Did you make the physics yourself?

Nineties Holywood Hacker by Casino Jack 2012-04-25T11:37:00

Okay I really think this is a brilliant concept. Forming a maze of your own in a challenging thinking game then going in and traversing it as an actiony game. However I fount it very confusing. A lot of times I kept clicking and the tile wouldn't be placed on the grid. Is there any limitation on when I can and cannot place a tile? It seemed like the moves that were allowed forced me to make mazes that were not connected and so made it unplayable. Please let me know how this is supposed to work, I'd really like to play this!

Kill Them With Asteroids by grimpunch 2012-04-25T12:53:00

Really cool game! I like it.

However it would have been cool to see a bar that tells me when I can fire again and when I can use my shields.

Also it got rather repetitive after a while since it didn't feel like I was progressing too much.

But aside from that I loved how the earth looked and how amazing the panning and shooting looked. Good job!

Tiny Maze Speedrun by netmute 2012-04-25T12:08:00

I liked the whole "you have to pee" and stuff, but the game felt a bit too simple. It's pretty impressive that the mazes are randomly generated though! Must have been pretty difficult and I commend you for your efforts!

However from the point of view of a simple player, I think it could have used some "oomph" to make it not simply a maze game.

Tinysasters by Volute 2012-04-25T11:49:00

Okay now this is the first game so far that I have given it an overall score of 5/5.

Let me start off by saying that, I usually *hate* games where you have to build stuff, resources and blah blah (like age of empires and all that) and I was skeptical about enjoying this game but the game is so awesome I think it made me start to love this genre!

This is my favourite game of the jam so far! I really loved how everything accelerated and it all fell into place once I got my resources handled well. And the concept of fighting against nature and not some tribe or war is incredible!

I also really loved how intuitive it all was. While it was actually rather complex with a lot of stuff to know, you could easily pick up all of that in a few seconds as you play.

Overall I really really loved this game, and you simply HAVE to make a full game out of this adding whatever else you intended and release it to the world!

Lord Deadrock's Adventures by abstroke 2012-04-25T13:23:00

Hmm, I couldn't seem to get past the first level. I get this book and then..where do I go?

Tiny Timmy and Big Bill by OmarShehata 2012-05-12T06:43:00

@Dr.Pingu,

it seems to be working for me. Could you try again now? If it's still not working, what browser are you using? (Also maybe try clearing your cache)

When Worlds Collide by AlwaysGeeky 2012-04-25T09:55:00

I love the game idea! And I like how good the earth looks and how I can bring it down to the core.

However I think you can develop the idea a bit more. Cuz right now, there is no challenge. You just click as hard as you can. Maybe the planet is firing back? Or maybe it gets "health packs" or whatever and whenever those touch the earth, they bring back your progress, so you need to keep hitting the earth and watch out for those as well etc..

When Worlds Collide by AlwaysGeeky 2012-04-29T15:41:00

This game is definitely beautiful looking! And I love how powerful I feel as I destroy the world :P

I think the fun factor here is the eye candy of watching the world destroyed bit by bit (which is awesome), but once you get over the initial wow factor, there's really no challenge. You just keep clicking as fast as you can.

I'm not sure if the comets I throw with the mouse get projected where I'm clicking or just get thrown randomly at the earth but it would be **awesome** if they get thrown to where I click, and that all my methods of destruction were more direct (Think rotating the earth in order to destroy the other side).

And as you're destroying, the earth people will be building colonies or laser systems to try and defend themselves, so you'd be trying to quickly take care of those while focusing on destroying the entire planet. Maybe even have bonuses floating around space?

I could definitely see this being an epic game if you work your way up to earth, taking on smaller planets in the galaxies first and upgrading your equipment, and maybe each planet has a different perk etc..

You've got a fun mechanic, just needs a twist and some content and would be a really fun game!

Space Rescue! by schnerble 2012-04-25T13:16:00

It's a nice game, but I didn't like how the turrets could fire in 360 and I could only fire in 8 angles, that made it a bit hard.

Snow Globe by Syawra 2012-04-28T08:31:00

It was actually pretty fun! I noticed a lot of the meteors weren't actually going to hit the planet but I guess that's part of the challenge as well.

All it was missing really was upgrades or some kind of progress and it would have been awesome(er).

The Invasion of Timmy by The_Observer 2012-04-25T11:12:00

Not working for me. The .jar file isn't doing anything and the batch file just opens a cmd window that closes immediately. I manage to catch it before it closes though:

http://4urentertainment.org/storage/NotWorking.png

I would really like to play this game though. It sounds interesting!

The Invasion of Timmy by The_Observer 2012-04-25T13:31:00

From the java website it now says I have "Version 6 Update 31". But when I open the cmd and type that command, or just "java" it still says it's not a valid command and all that. Do I need to restart or anything else?

The Invasion of Timmy by The_Observer 2012-04-27T20:43:00

@dash where is the PATH environment variable exactly? Sorry for my noobishness!

Tiny World Big War by dx0ne 2012-04-25T11:32:00

Very interesting game. The blue bar was a bit hard to see, and I wasn't really sure if I was playing right or not. Does one side ever win or do they keep killing each other in the middle?

Tiny Neutrino by Scott Baker 2012-04-29T15:28:00

I really like the gameplay idea! However I don't think it's at its full potential.

Now my first impression is that the controls are a bit sluggish, but of course that is because I start out with a relatively large particle size. However I feel the movement speeds could be adjusted greatly.

An example is that, when you become a neutrino, you go fast enough on the x axis, but on the y axis it's like one press sends me to the other side of the screen. A lot of the movement feels out of my control with how unpredictable it seems. Perhaps it would be better to make the particle move uniformly in all sides. (Like maybe, if the neutrino has the fastest speed of 20 pixels per second, it moves by that speed in whichever direction it's going).

As mentioned above, the problems are mainly with the lack of the *sense* of control over the particle.

With that said, the concept itself could be fleshed out more. It's fun to play around with, but where is the challenge or skill? Do you just keep randomly colliding with whatever you see in order to proceed?

If you refine the controls a bit and maybe add something like, smaller particles could bind to you create a bigger particle and slow you down. So you're trying to strategically avoid smaller particles while hitting ones that are roughly your size. Something like that.

Just a suggestion, but that's the whole point of prototypes! You've got a rather promising one, keep experimenting with different things until you get something fun.

Tiny Neutrino by Scott Baker 2012-04-29T15:31:00

Another thing I wanted to mention that I think isn't really that important for the game jam games but is something that definitely makes a huge difference for released games, is intuitiveness.

This keyword is so important, I'm going to say it again.

Intuitiveness.

You want your game to be as intuitive as possible, with as little instructions as possible. Your goal should be that the player can just glance at the game and almost immediately get the entire gist of it. (The more complex the game gets the harder this becomes, but of course this is where genius comes in)

Perhaps next time you think of making an instructions screen, think "how can I get players to figure this information out in the game itself" because most players tend to skip such screens.

But of course none of us spend too much time too much time on instructions when there's 48 hours :P

Tiny world on mercury by Marthog 2012-04-28T08:40:00

Nice game! As said, it would be cool to see this developed further!

Dimensional by someone 2012-04-28T08:33:00

I'm not sure if I fully understood what was going on, some instructions would have been nice. But for 5 hours of work the idea seems pretty interesting and the game is rather solid!

Tiny Garden of Hope by steamgirl 2012-04-29T16:19:00

I really like the idea of this game!

But first a word on the controls and presentation, I really think this game needs to introduce itself better. While I commend your endeavor on trying to make the player figure out the controls as they go, I think the player should be at least told what keys they should use.

I had to read the comments here to figure out I had to use the right click to plant seeds.

With that, this is a really good prototype for 48 hours and I think it has much potential! Here are some ideas:

-Plants having a much wider variety
-More forgiving gameplay, I died when I was almost done filling it all. A very good concept to implement is the easing up of the game exponentially. As you grow more and more plants, things spiral and you find yourself getting much more energy and weather.
-Have the plants you grow unlock further areas.

Imagine as this robot first lands on this tiny planet, he plants the area around him, but a certain tree grows such that it can walk on it and access a new area. This could give the game space for progression and content as the planets continue to unlock new areas in creative ways.

Eventually turning into a very unique adventure game where you adventure not by your wits or your brutality in fighting, but in your love for plants and making things beautiful.

Experiment with plant growing mechanics and this could really be an amazing game.

Microscopia by azurenimbus 2012-04-28T08:20:00

Amazing game! My jaw almost dropped when I saw others started to move as I also moved.

Tiny World's Lunar CTF by bwdevel 2012-04-25T10:30:00

It's not a bad concept, but there isn't really much to it right now. What would be *really* cool is if you made us of that planet mechanic such that, you could jump from one planet to another to escape the fight and/or get an advantage on your opponent. And with epic rockets and lasers this could be seriously amazing!

But good job on your first game though!

Planet Protectors by TM13 2012-04-22T10:45:00

It looks really nice but I think there might be something wrong. I open, and I shoot, but then the screen fades to black.

Muffin Time! by mr_tag 2012-04-25T10:26:00

Refreshing to see a game that's actually rather innovative with a cool mechanic!

I really like how well it both works and fits into the theme. And every time you enter a machine there are even smaller machine and so on and so forth. Very fun mechanic.

Great job!

This game is pretty NEET! by Sonictail 2012-04-28T09:01:00

As stated above, some instructions would really be helpful

Lost in space by Keirua 2012-05-03T17:27:00

I liked the game!

It was rather short though. I loved the custom made star wars theme at the beginning :P

I think if you had more time, you could add more stuff to find. This could be a pretty interesting adventure game if you space the survivors out a bit and have various items that you need to find first. (And of course with some great art it could be pretty awesome)

Unworld by FlowerPower 2012-04-25T12:05:00

Same for me with windows 7.

Tiny World! by unicornpooping 2012-04-25T10:36:00

Wow, despite you making this in only 24 hours, this game seems pretty big!

I liked how I could explore the vast worlds, and even if one way was blocked off, I could still keep going. I only quit at the part where there was that arrow that launched you into the arrow for only one time, and I didn't feel like backtracking all the way to choose another path.

Awesome job though!

SNES Dreams by Cronotriggers 2012-04-25T13:20:00

This is actually a really really interesting mechanic. Controlling the game by the mood of the music. I can totally see this being expanded on so I'm going to rate it :D

I'll even try to get it working on my iPhone. Did you post an ipa in the source or do I have to compile?

The Tiny World of the butterfly by OriginalBigDan 2012-04-25T13:29:00

It's a pretty nice demo, but is there any point to the game aside from just flying around?

I did enjoying doing so though.

Ok...Now this is akward! by Pierrec 2012-04-25T12:37:00

Ok I must say, I thoroughly enjoyed this! Only game with a 5/5 mood and 5/5 humor that I gave so far. I also love how you integrated the theme.

I also really love how immersive it felt. I really felt that I was in an awkward conversation. And I love how the two faces showed what she was thinking and what she was showing.

Overall really amazing, and I thank you for making this, and I will be on the lookout for your future games!

Atom Planet by NMcCoy 2012-04-28T08:47:00

AMAZING game.

I'm not sure if there was a goal, but even *without* a goal this was incredibly fun. You seriously need to develop this further. I can totally this being an incredibly awesome game.

Maybe something like creating shapes and sharing your creation. Or imagine how awesome it would be for two people to building something simultanously.

Atom Planet by NMcCoy 2012-04-28T08:47:00

Oh also, I kinda have the game left open just to listen to the soundtrack.

Tiny Ranger by Monkey Armada 2012-04-25T10:06:00

While it's a nice game with a nice concept, some subtle things are really holding it back.

First the collision detection with the ground confused me a bit at first, I couldn't see my character and thought he hadn't spawned yet or something, then I realized he was slowly going up the ground.

I like the fact that the stage is circular (as a tiny planet) but maybe it's just me but I think you die too easily. Like I can barely manage to go 30 seconds without losing, and he doesn't fire nearly fast enough. I think if you had simply made him fire faster and made the game more lenient, then all it would need is some upgrades or new content to keep the game interesting (different types of ships etc..) and the game would be very awesome.

Nice job overall!

[Darkness Creeping] by AD-Edge 2012-04-28T09:24:00

I really love how awesomely the camera works! And the idea of controlling other things is awesome. I haven't gotten too far in yet but I'll be freeing up some time to play this :D

Drop of Life by MrTwister 2012-05-03T17:41:00

I'm not sure what the "Game of life" is that everyone is referring to, but I'm just going to review how I saw it.

First, I think the concept is *really* interesting. Everything was moving a bit fast for me at the beginning though, it would have been better if there was more "hand holding" during the tutorials, but I guess there was really no time for that in the jam!

What I can say though is that I really think this is a concept that has potential. It looks to be pretty damn well suited for mobile ports, and I think it could really succeed there. I'd pay for an extended version for this for my phone.

Maybe with some more added gameplay mechanics, it could be pretty kickass!

3 Arrows by wupto 2012-04-25T10:43:00

I really like the idea of only having three arrows and I like the art and everything, but it seemed the arrows weren't working for me. I fired one arrow at a bug, it kept walking, fired another, it kept walking, so I assumed the arrows weren't actually effective against bugs, so I stopped firing, and that made the game pretty hard.

I think the bugs should take one hit to kill or at least give some kind of feedback when they get hit. Otherwise awesome game. Just needs music as well.

Bottlecolonies by tcstyle 2012-04-29T15:58:00

I really love the concept on this one! It's like combining tetris with one of those building/colonizing games.

I think you've got a solid fun core in, but the only reason I quit was that I felt the game getting drawn out. A really good way to get the player to feel like he's progressing without adding too much content is to get things to chain-react and spiral as he gets deeper into the game.

For example, after I have placed a lot of blue settlements next to each other, they would all keep giving me score every turn, resulting in my score increasing exponentially during the game, which I think would be a lot more fun.

Other things you could try are maybe certain other special tiles or settlements. I'm not sure what the normal ground did if anything, but perhaps strategic stuff like..most of the tiles need to be placed away from other kinds, but what about a tile that gives you a super duper bonus if it's placed touching all 4 colours of settlements?

Most players would try to get them away from each other as far as possible, but it'd take some skill and be pretty fun to try and leave the possibility to keep them in close enough proximity to utilize this tile when it comes.

It's adding risk to the game, which is always fun!

Athletic's Foot by neosam 2012-04-27T20:53:00

Okay so, as mentioned, I really didn't know how to play. You should really include instructions somewhere, that's really a crucial part.

Space Bear by madflame991 2012-04-27T21:08:00

Ok I must say, this game is hilarious!

My only suggestion is I think you should have made the game tell me which direction the next star is instead of just numbers. Makes it easier.

Gods Inc. by BlackDogg 2012-05-03T17:35:00

My first reaction was trying all the keys. I didn't actually know that the first screen was a level select. I think a short "Click to select a level" or something would be beneficial here.

With that said, the game seems to have a really interesting mechanic!

I like how you basically turned the whole resources/land management kind of game into one where you're managing stuff over a globe. I also think it was a good idea to introduce a new mechanic or an addition every level so the player remains hooked.

I think if you could try going for some different or game changing mechanics, that would really keep the player hooked for a long time. Like, for as long as I played, nothing was introduced that was harmful to me. Maybe some asteroids come sometimes and I need to rotate the earth so that it doesn't hit the shelter while at the same time carrying food and resources? THAT would be pretty epic!

Overall good job with the game!

Merl's Hicventures by Suds 2012-04-25T10:19:00

I liked how big the world seemed and how there were people to talk to and whatnot but I really had a hard time playing this game. First, instructions are really important and I think most games just decide to worry about this later and never do.

I got that you interact with people with the E key but, but then pressing E again didn't make me choose the sentence I wanted to say.

I did a bit of exploring so overall I think it could be polished up, but you might have focused on making a smaller world but fixing it up really good.

My 2 cents!

Sirus the Virus by eburn184 2012-04-25T12:01:00

Okay I played the game all the way through and I must say, I am amazing!

The mechanic is extremely innovative and extremely fun! I also really like how, it's very hard to master, but not frustrating.

I think you did an amazing job with this. Great work!

Mirror Rays by keenblaze 2012-04-27T21:18:00

Amazing game!

I really love the creative and innovative mechanic as well as the quirky and witty instructions! Top notch work!

Tiny Defenders by Raptor85 2012-04-29T15:47:00

Let me first start off by saying it's pretty awesome that you got this done in 48 hours with C++! But is there any reason why you chose C++ over something more suited to rapid development like Flash?

Now onto the game, it's a pretty cool tower defense game, but I feel the coolness stops there. I'm not sure how the technical side of the game went (if this was the first time programming a tower defense like that with C++, then kudos to you!) however if you'd like to develop this further, why not try something different?

How about a tower defense with you playing as the *ants* instead? And with the enemy setting up defenses? Perhaps you can control the speed and type of ants that come in and try to take over the enemy's "tower"?

Just some food for thought!

Tiny Tale by MinerCraftGuy 2012-04-25T13:07:00

I love the transition effect, but as mentioned above, there doesn't seem to be anything to interact with. Is that a bug or did you not have time to finish it? The game looks like it could be very interesting though!

Celia by Finn Stokes 2012-04-25T13:04:00

Beautiful graphics and nice game! I really enjoyed it but the frustrating part was that you didn't mention that the enter key restarted the level (which is really unintuitive and should be something like R) in the game. I only figured that out when I read your description here, and that was after I had quit and opened the game 3 times due to mistakes in later levels.

With that said, I did enjoy the game but I think it's missing a "soul" if you will. Who is she? What is she doing here? What is this world? Why am I doing into doors? Some small backstory could go a long way into converting this from a game where you grow large and go into doors into maybe a game where you are lost in a lush and dangerous world that you are desperately trying to escape.

Tiny Galaxy by Tifu 2012-04-25T11:01:00

I really enjoyed this one!

I was so waiting for someone to make this mechanic :P

The planet gravity mechanic worked so well (must have been difficult to program) and the talking bunnies really gave the world life. Don't think I have any qualms about this one.

Prince of Leaves by evilseanbot 2012-04-28T09:19:00

I like the idea, but I would have loved to see some heavier use of stealth. Like right now, in fear of using up all my stealth bar I ended up not really using it that much. Also the character felt a bit floaty. But other than that it was pretty fun!

Invasion Of Tiny World by gregdevice 2012-04-28T07:50:00

Pretty cool game!

I'm not sure if there was an end goal or anything but I just kept walking and killing people until I got bored.

Burning Platform by recursive frog 2012-05-03T17:15:00

Alright so I managed to get my hands on an android phone for the promised review, and here it is!

First, let me start by saying that I think it's pretty awesome that you managed to get a game finished on android in just 48 hours! It plays really well! So kudos on that.

As for the game itself, I find the concept pretty nice actually. Having to control two avenues at once in order to keep the boxes from falling. The problem is that it feels a bit too unforgiving.

It's already rather difficult as it is, but the ground progressively gets smaller which makes it very hard. I'm not sure if there's currently a way to win or if it's just survive as long as you can. But either way I think if you tone down the difficulty a bit it could be pretty nice!

A suggestion is to maybe have the lines you draw with your finger last for a few seconds longer. Also I can see how you can build upon this by adding different kinds of boxes, different kinds of powerups. It could totally be a neat little arcade game!

The World in a Bottle by Robotic 2012-04-27T21:01:00

Pretty nice game!

It got really fun once the helicopters and tanks got in and I was shrinking everything in sight with no mercy. I could really see how this could be expanded to feature more levels and features and make a kickass game!

Dunscape by Kane 2012-05-03T17:21:00

The controls didn't work for me, neither the numbers nor any of the WASD or arrow keys, so I'm not going to rate it, but I saw the gameplay video so I can just review what I saw from there.

First I think it's pretty impressive that you got this all done in 17 hours of work and with C!

The game itself seems like it could be a pretty nice adventure game or a randomly generated arcade game. Perhaps as others have suggested, add some combat elements to include some skill in killing the rats.

As it stands though, I think there's a lot of room for additions. Maybe stuff like switches or perhaps ponds that you can't pass until you get a certain item etc.. etc..

FlyAway! by veloc1 2012-04-25T11:19:00

Well, I got stuck in the ground several time. Also is there a goal? I found the human but then..nothing happened.

itty 8bitty by 8bitmatt 2012-04-28T08:08:00

Really awesome concept!

I rated it 5/5 for innovation. I think the only thing missing is instructions because I didn't get what was happening at first. Other than that awesome work!

VENA (Viral Evolution: Nano Attack) by Dakota 2012-08-27T15:33:00

I think it's really really really awesome that you made a game for Gameboy, props on that!

The game itself was rather fun, it's a solid shooter, although obviously it gets rather repetitive quickly, but I assume creating the game for gameboy ate up most of the time.

Actually, reading the description again, it does seem like the gameplay actually changes as enemies get tougher, although I can't say I've stuck around long enough to see things change. I think making the blobs evolve faster or make these changes happen faster would grip people more.

Overall, congrats on making a game for gameboy!

Thanks for the review! Background music is right on its way! Actually, I just uploaded the new version.

Also did some balancing and whatnot

Pretty cool for 12 hours! I especially like how humorous the whole thing is :P

Title Goes Here... by eShredder 2012-08-31T11:08:00

I liked this game! I loved the graphics as well.

Although I think the key to a successful shooter/fighting game, is feedback. Shooting the zombies didn't give any feedback except for some particles. Having the zombies get pushed back and/or flash would make a huge difference.

Oh my, a shooter with blocks! by Dir3kt 2012-08-29T21:12:00

I really like the concept of this game! I think a bit more work could really make it shine.

Mainly what I didn't like was that the camera was really zoomed in, so that you could see only so many blocks at a time. If you zoomed out a bit you could add a lot more enemies and give the player a lot more freedom.

My Sword Is Faster Than Your Bullet by lekochen 2012-08-31T17:07:00

It's an interesting idea, but I don't think it works too well.

Like, it's a good typing game, but having to remember to avoid certain letters is just annoying and not fun. Just my 2 cents.

OS: Evolution by zatyka 2012-08-28T18:15:00

I actually really really like this game. I think the shooting to launch yourself mechanic is implemented well, and I like how well you progress with it, using it in creative ways like repelling bullets. I stopped at the level with the first turret, but it was only due to having to leave. I'd definitely give this another try. I'm giving this a 4/5!

Cellvolution by MrOtton 2012-08-30T15:09:00

Is it only one level?

It actually looked pretty nice, although there was a glaring problem with the scrolling. The screen would only scroll when I got to the edge so I was moving and not really seeing where I was going.

Sustenance by pardue 2012-08-27T16:12:00

Why can't I move? I think the game would be really really interesting if I was able to do so.

It was a bit hard at first because I kept having to remember which keys expelled which color. Although I really think this game would be 100x more fun if I could just move!

Then it would be you would try to seek out bacteria which are the colour of the background, and perhaps the colours would be dynamically generated. Could be loads of fun!

So yeah, good concept!

A Simple Evolution by Psytew 2012-09-05T08:03:00

It's rather confusing. Definitely needs better instructions.

Beyond Our Sacred Sun by the31 2012-08-28T13:53:00

I think this is an interesting concept, at least, I *think* it is, it's a bit hard to tell exactly what the point of the game is, adding a short instructions screen probably wouldn't have taken too much time, I do like the idea of building a network and..doing something with it though!

Darwinian Theory by bobbobowitz 2012-08-31T17:03:00

Although the art isn't very good, the game turned out to be really really fun!

I have a few notes:
-I think the fact that the animals become white when they get really close is really confusing, especially when you get deeper in and are super focused.
-It's fun, but a bit hard at the moment. I think maybe having it so you have 3 lives would be better.
-I couldn't tell if it had any sort of progression, but something like that would nice!

Overall, really nice and unique game!

EVE by chipcaramel 2012-09-10T15:38:00

It's a really cool adventure-like game. I like the stylistic appearance of it, and it's cool to see a fellow lover! I think the game just needed some better presentation.

The lack of background music kind of hindered the mood, and I think if the intro was a series of pictures that changed, it would have been easier to follow/feel more natural than a long moving strip.

As said, the point of the game wasn't directly clear as well. An instructions screen (or even better yet, showing the instructions in-game) while giving some background info to the game would have been nice. That would have stopped me from asking questions like "who am I?" "what am I trying to do?". I can see these were supposed to be answered by the intro but I didn't really interpret much.

Overall very solid effort! Good job!

Upward Mankind by chamberlainpi 2012-08-27T15:58:00

I actually really liked how you described the theme in an abstract way in your initial description. Even though it's a super short platformer, I was imagining I would play with a man, who represents mankind, in his ascend to the upper realms of the sky and finally into the heavens!

That would be really neat. I also really like the music and the atmosphere, just wish it was longer.

Maybe at the end of his epic escalation he evolves wings and flies! :D

EvoBlob by Tritax 2012-08-28T18:34:00

Despite the lack of polish, this was actually a really enjoyable game! I found it very nice that you guys created this as a family effort, kudos to you!

My only gripe about it is the control scheme was rather weird and a bit frustrating to use. Always try to be intuitive with your design. Instead of having one button to jump, one button to eat and a third one that makes the player shake...I'm not sure what that does, you could have actually grouped them all into an action button, that changes depending on what you're doing, or better yet, just make one button for jumping, and eating those creatures is done automatically when you touch them.

But other than that, fun game!

BobBots! by B3N 2012-08-31T16:54:00

I think the concept is actually really good! With that said, the game repetitive pretty quick. I think making different kinds of enemies come faster, and perhaps some other stuff like powerups to mix it up would keep things interesting and awesome :D

Cellular Division 101 by MasterBaldwin 2012-08-27T16:07:00

Pretty cool game! At first I wasn't sure if I was moving or not, because there were no other cells in the vicinity (adding something like a background or a grid to let me know that I'm moving would be convenient)

Also, as a game that involves size, I think it's important to have some sort of visual indicator of who is bigger than me and who is smaller. Because when the difference is small, it may be hard to tell, and those few seconds (or milliseconds) to judge may be frustrating. Osmos did this in a really intuitive way, where the bigger cells turned red and the smaller ones turned blue.

I think the movement could be a bit smoother too. But overall, solid effort!

StarwingZ by diki 2012-08-28T19:21:00

Ok, this was really really awesome. I think I wasted like 15 minutes playing :D Even though there was no score or anything. I think adding that would be really nice. As well as maybe some other obstacles or things to collect. Please make this into a full game, it will be awesome :D

Uberlution by Robotic 2012-08-27T15:52:00

The title reminds me of that movie "Something something or how I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb" or something like that. Was that intentional? :P

My first impression: I really like the feel of the game! The art looks sweet and stylistic, the music creates a solemn and somber atmosphere, and everything looks polished!

I do like the game's concept, and I do love stealth games, but I think the small circle around the player may be hindering the fun more than it helps. A lot of times I'm just walking aimlessly until I see a big guy, but by then, it's too late to try to outrun him, so there's not much I can do.

Having it so that I can see the enemies before they see me would make a great difference.

I can totally see this being a super fun experience, but currently it's a bit too frustrating for me. That's just my 2 cents! (If you tweak anything or make the game easier, I'd love to give it another try!) I'm going to rate it on how fun I think it can be with these minor changes.

Uberlution by Robotic 2012-08-27T16:04:00

Also, since a lot of people are doing games where you eat smaller things, I think adding some visual indicator of who is smaller than me and who is bigger is crucial, so as not to be dependent on the player trying to judge two similar sized objects and trying to determine which is bigger.

Take a look at how Osmos did it. Smaller cells turn blue, bigger cells turn red, so you can instantly know who to attack and who to avoid.

Forward by zaratustra 2012-08-27T15:45:00

I do like how you made 3 different games (with 3 different technologies?) although each chapter feels like a rather rushed or unfinished prototype. I think focusing on just one game idea and fleshing that out might have been better.

In chapter 3 I was a bit confused as I didn't know whether the comets came on their own or whether I was supposed to do something to get them to show up.

I do really like the retro nature and exploration vibe of chapter 1.

A New Kind of Man by Khayet 2012-08-31T11:14:00

As mentioned, the game's concept was pretty nice, but incredibly short.

What I did really like is that there was (more or less) multiple ways to go about the level depending on the abilities you evolve. I think this is something you can really explore more.

LD29 — Beneath the Surface

aoutch! by Bashosha 2014-05-03T16:26:00

Nice attempt for your first Ludum Dare!

I was a bit lost at the beginning with there being no tutorial or anything to tell me what was happening. (I wasn't aware I had to click until I read the description, adding just this line of text in the game in the first level would help a lot)

As people mentioned, it was also a bit strange the timer keeps going even after the level has ended.

It was fun to catch all the (I'm not exactly sure what they are) things under the skin. But because they just disappeared when clicked on, it didn't "feel" very good.

You'll be surprised at how adding small things like a "+10!" score prompt or a little squish animation or any positive feedback like that can make a huge difference in making players really love to press on them.

I couldn't really play too much because I lost once and the game seems to be stuck on "Game Over" even when I restart it.

Although, it didn't really seem fair because I lost trying to click on the "Next Level" button.

This might be an example of the game being frustrating rather than difficult. Since you lose when you click outside of the things, and I don't exactly know the hitbox or boundary for them (making them light up when your mouse is over them would fix this) so it can be frustrating when someone mislicks and loses but thinks he really did click on them.

The ads as a mechanic were nice in keeping the game from getting stale. If you had more time you could have added maybe different kinds of things, instead of moving back and forth, maybe going in and out of the skin and you had to catch them at the right moment.

Hope you had fun doing this though, and hope to see you in the next Ludum Dare :D

LD32 — An Unconventional Weapon

Raimundo's Rampage by DrZanuff 2015-05-08T00:40:00

It's an interesting game! I had a few thoughts:

-I think it'd be nice if you added mouse control in the menu. At first I thought it wasn't working, because most menu's can be clicked on with the mouse.

-It was kind of annoying that the character moves faster in the air than on the ground, makes it feel weird when you move and jump.

-The paralax in the background was a nice touch!

ICE CREAM by little_polygon 2015-04-20T21:24:00

It looks very beautiful! The steering felt kind of slow, which made it a little frustrating.

SUPER SHOT by sprawl 2015-04-19T02:57:00

It's pretty nice for a game that took half a day! It would indeed have been very cool if you had music that sped up with the time.

DROP IT! by Null DIES 2015-05-17T17:12:00

I've always loved games that combine a music element with the gameplay! (It always makes me wonder, what if your score was determined not just based on your gameplay, but the quality of the music you make while playing, just an interesting thought!)

It's an overall pretty fun game! If I were to be a little nit-picky, some things you could add would be a little more feedback. For example, some sort of animation or flash when the enemies die instead of just disappearing. And when you try to fire a weapon that isn't ready yet, you could have a sound effect that communicates that it's not read.

That electric attack looks pretty epic too!

LD33 — You are the Monster

I Spy (A Ghost!) by OmarShehata 2015-08-25T10:29:00

Thank you DalaiLlama! I think there's definitely potential for the gameplay to grow, but we spent so much time trying to get the networking working right (and it still has all these bugs!)

I Spy (A Ghost!) by OmarShehata 2015-08-26T10:17:00

commodoreKid, hmm, that's odd! What browser are you using?

I Spy (A Ghost!) by OmarShehata 2015-08-28T06:57:00

Thanks for the bug report Geckoo! I updated the game, it should be working on Firefox now. Let me know if you run into anything else!

I Spy (A Ghost!) by OmarShehata 2015-08-29T11:49:00

Drunkteam, what browser(s) are you using? Is your friend on a mobile phone? It could just be a connection issue, maybe try refreshing again? (it could be that WebRTC isn't supported on one of the browsers)

I Spy (A Ghost!) by OmarShehata 2015-08-29T16:31:00

BoyWithAStick, are you on a Windows? What OS exactly? Are your browsers up to date?

I Spy (A Ghost!) by OmarShehata 2015-09-01T18:20:00

Sorry about that! Should be fixed now!

I Spy (A Ghost!) by OmarShehata 2015-09-01T19:00:00

Thanks Cyberwiz!

undef, it could be one of the devices losing connection (it tends to happen sometimes). Maybe if you restart them both?

I Spy (A Ghost!) by OmarShehata 2015-09-02T09:15:00

eddynardo, does it give you an error? Does it not load? Does it not connect?

B(L)OB by Nikteddy92 2015-09-01T16:49:00

It's a nice game! I like how it wasn't just destroying things, but you had to watch your mass and density. It felt a little difficult at first, keeping my eye on the different stats and making sure they were above 0. I'd start to panic as they got below 5%!

I feel there's definitely room for improvement, but it's pretty awesome you did this in just 12 hours. Also,JABBERWOCKY !

Brood by SecondDimension 2015-08-29T13:14:00

Great game! I definitely love the graphics and atmosphere.

It was a little confusing at first. I think if there was an interactive tutorial it would definitely help!

SQUISH PUNY FLESHBAGS by yajiv 2015-09-01T19:14:00

Great game! Very fun, I love the keyboard mashing idea! And yay for Love2D!

The Howl by pereubu 2015-09-01T17:54:00

I was just about to get bored, feeling lost, until I saw something far off in the distance, oh look, a bunny! I chase it, but I can't catch up, I decide to shoot an arrow, and I get it!

I think you really did a good job setting up an atmosphere, and even though it felt slow at first, I think that makes actually catching prey that much more rewarding.

The Monster Inside by Random Seed Games 2015-09-01T18:27:00

That was fantastic! I usually get bored of text-adventures pretty quickly, but I just had to finish this one. Even knowing the theme, I was quite surprised with the plot twist!

The only thing was that I wished there was more interaction, especially with how beautiful the art was (Maybe you have to rotate the camera to find more clues) but I assume that would have been difficult with the time constraints.

The Monster Files by Literal Games 2015-08-25T19:09:00

Just finished all 3 cases, fantastic game! I absolutely loved how the instructions actually like, and it turning into an action fighting game all of a sudden was a pleasant surprise! The humor was great too!

Famous Nessie by DalaiLlama 2015-08-25T10:52:00

I definitely love the atmosphere for this game! Nessie just locks so cute, and the music is so upbeat and wonderful!

It ran a little slow on my laptop (but not too bad) and I was a little confused at first but once I got the hang of things, that I needed to go outside the water to eat but not run into tourists it got rather fun! It feels rather satisfying to "sink" under the water and surface again.

I wasn't sure why there needed to be a button to float if I can just point with the mouse and move? (I didn't know you were supposed to use the mouse!)

The only other thing is I wish it was a little clearer whether I was in the line of sight of the people taking pictures or not, I felt I was stumbling most of the time.

But other than that, great game and awesome graphics!

Grave by uheartbeast 2015-09-01T17:42:00

Definitely awesome! The combat system was a lot of fun. I was just starting to feel it was too ease when that huge knight came in! I think that was the most fun because that's when you HAD to roll, otherwise you'd die.

Heroes Always Win by bradur 2015-08-29T11:48:00

I really like this! This was definitely one of the ideas I wanted to make, and this is well implemented. I would definitely love to play a more finished version of this.

There's just one thing that kind of ruined the experience for me, that everything gets removed when I restart. I feel like usually I'd place things, hit play, see that maybe one or two of my minions were placed incorrectly, and I want to just move them, instead of placing everything all over again.

Other than that, great game!

Otherworldly Stars by Sam Twidale 2015-08-28T07:17:00

When you said "I'm a programmer, not much of an artist", I was not at all expecting that the game would look so beautiful! I can definitely see that with the right music, this could have a very nice atmosphere.

I know you said there was supposed to be a bullet hell but, I think this game would work much better as the adventure of an angry and lost god trying to regain his memory and atone. Maybe the bullet hell could be a small section, like reliving some of his past, but the main draw for me for this game is the adventure, discovering and talking and finding things out. Great work! And love that it's made with Haxe!

Super Snack Time! by adsilcott 2015-09-01T17:14:00

Definitely a fun game! I loved the little mario's! At first I thought I couldn't use the plants too much or they'll die, but realized I could just keep mashing the buttons.

It might be interesting if there was a limit to how fast you could use them, if they had to recharge, it might make the game more strategic! It's fun though!

Feed the Beast by klams 2015-09-01T17:36:00

I'd love to play this, it looks amazing, but the WeTransfer link says "Download not available anymore".

Birthday Monster by justthestudio 2015-09-04T09:06:00

It's definitely a fun little game. Adding more mini-games would definitely be great! I think the only thing that bothered me is not knowing when the game would start. If there was a countdown (or a click to play) that would make a big difference.

Monster From Dungeon by zuick 2015-08-29T11:29:00

I think this definitely has potential! It was fun at first, but adding more threats would definitely make it fun. For example having a guard at the top, or having the people run away when they see you.

Werewolf Quest by Yrr 2015-09-02T06:32:00

I really love this game mechanic! I think it has a lot of potential. The gameplay itself could be polished, (it felt a little weird that punching in the air just stopped your momentum) but I love that idea of trying to find these windows, to be exposed to the moon and have much greater powers!

Great work!

Truth be untold by pseudavid 2015-08-29T12:50:00

I definitely enjoyed this! I love the subtle uses of "You Are the Monster". I felt I could definitely relate to some things there. Great writing!

Envelop by ethteck 2015-08-29T11:34:00

This is definitely fun! I liked that the ghost's expression changed depending on whether they could absorb you or vice versa. There's a game very similar to this that I played a while back, but it was online multiplayer.

It would also be nice if the sizes changed more gradually rather than instantly.

N'Orbit by Alcranky 2015-08-29T12:15:00

The game has a lot of potential. I think it would have been way awesomer if you could also take the rockets into your orbit and hurl them back, that would be really cool!

Dude, Stop by Patomkin 2015-08-25T13:12:00

This game was super hilarious! I loved all these little jokes. And I really like how there were sometimes ways to NOT be evil (is there a way for every puzzle to beat it without being evil?)

It made me want to play again just to see what would happen if I pick Times New Roman instead of Comic Sans. I love how this is like a social commentary on all the horrible little things people do!
