Beast Feast by UndergroundPixel 2012-08-28T20:36:00
Thanks for the feedback everyone. I did the programming for Beast Feast and had a lot of fun with it. We had a good team for art, sound, and design.

@mr_tag Yeah, I really wanted to fill the large environment with more slow-motion scenery, but we ran out of time. And yes, the music was all created in the 72 hours by my composer friend Clark Aboud. He is working with me on the soundtrack for my game Lacuna Passage as well.
Working on an Oculus Rift build right now :)
Just added download links for the updated version on the web player page.
Fantasic art and an awesome variety of characters!
Love the graphical style. Was confused on where my health was though.
Nice take on the theme, and great visuals!
@emmelineprufrock Yeah, the player select stuff was added in very last-minute. Overlooked that little detail. Would fixing that be qualified as a "bug fix" for competition rules? Or would it have to be listed as a post-compo version?
Sorry, but no keyboard controls for this one. It wouldn't make sense with the analog aiming in the game. Holding a direction on the joystick directs where your ball is thrown. Please don't vote if you can't play. Thanks.
@LordHellMaX Yeah, I only had xbox controllers to test with unfortunately. Glad you were able to play still.
@rico.albe You managed to point out most of the bugs/issues that I didn't have time to fix during the jam. I really do like the gameplay of this game though so I may come back and do a more polished release at some point. Thanks for your feedback.
@Harsay Keyboards have a max number of keys that will respond to being pressed at the same time. Most keyboards max out at around 6 keys at one time (depending on which keys) so that would make it pretty much impossible to do more than 2 players on a keyboard (not to mention how uncomfortable it would be). I still think analog aiming (full 360 degree control) is important in a game like this. Even though Dodgy Ball is much simpler, try to imagine playing Smash Bros on a keyboard. Aiming attacks even in 8 directions wouldn't be precise enough I don't think.
The art was a result of trying to learn all the new 2D features of Unity while developing the game. I had never touched the sprite features or messed with the mechanim animation trees. That took longer than I thought.
@01101101 Thanks!
Overall I think your mechanics are solid. Took me a while to figure out what to do, but it is an interesting take on the theme.
Enjoyed the visual character progression, nice stuff!
This feels like a very complete and well-polished game, but the difficulty balance is a bit off. I felt like I didn't have to do much and by the time it started getting difficult for my cannons to handle, no amount of aiming them manually could save me. Great art though and interesting design choices.
I feel like this was a lot of clicking for very little payoff. A Twine game should give me something new to read as often as possible. I was skipping past the repeating text as much as possible. The concept and setup was interesting though.
Mechanics were pretty solid, but I agree with the other comments about difficulty. I died the first time I set out to attack another group of pirates, but after upgrading it wasn't as bad.
I kinda wish that the planets didn't start moving until after you launch. It would be more puzzle-like in that regard, but I suppose this has it's own challenge as well. Very cool.
Good fun and great art.
Can't imagine how that field must've smelled with the sweet combo of rotting corpses and cow patties...ugh.
So simple, but very effective. Nice work.
I really wanted this to work based on the screenshots and description, but I just couldn't seem to be detected accurately. Interesting idea though.
This is a fun kind of crazy. I feel like if the controls weren't quite so binary it might be more interesting. Nice work though.
Nice atmosphere and great use of the theme!
And that's a killer fez...
I found myself fairly confused for a bit. When I finally started getting the hang of switching controls it started getting too difficult skill-wise. I feel like the challenge in a game like this should be more puzzle-based, but this was a very interesting approach to the theme.
Nice job completing your first entry. You definitely have the ground work for something that could be interesting, but as it is right now there is not much challenge.
I really like contemplative exploration games, but unfortunately I just don't think there was enough here to inspire me to explore. Movement speed being so slow was the most frustrating. I like the idea of an exploration game with such abstract graphics though.
Excellent work on the audio and graphics. Simple but fun gameplay too.
I don't know what that was, but I feel like that must be what I child feels like when they do something wrong and don't understand why adults are yelling at them...
I think the main thing keeping me from replaying is how I can randomly be killed immediately after respawning. Interesting idea though.
This has been my favorite so far. If only for the novelty of it. The typing parts could have been a bit shorter.
pretty satisfying little pixel shooter. The audio was starting to grate on me though.
This is a pretty nice foundation that I could see expanded on, but as it is it was a bit tedious. Liked the audio.
Simple but fun. Nice work!
Interesting idea and decently executed. Graphics could definitely use some work though.
@ParaPup, yes, it ends after 4 minutes. You can tweet your score at the end.
@DesignerNap The original plan was to create all the show images ourselves, but we simply didn't have the time. It took more than 4 hours just to gather the snapshots we have now. There are over 200 unique frames spread over 64 shows and 16 channels and the family members' likes/dislikes are matched reasonably with what you might expect. If we ever come back to this idea we would love to do unique parodies of each show.
@MrShoestore Thanks! I just went and played your entry too. If I remember correctly you are a backer of our Kickstarter so you should have access to the demo that we recently put out (that you already played at MDGS). We enjoyed taking a break from LP development to take part in this.
@Pulsatronic Your family members were probably distracted from the TV and not earning you points. The game directs you to click on them to get their attention back. The game also gives you a lower total score if there is a large discrepancy between the scores of different family members. The family member with the lowest happiness brings down your total score.
@regisRquoi Thanks! Yes, the distractions can help or hurt you.
The number buttons do work, but you have to input the actual station number of the channel you want to go to. I can see how it might be an improvement to just have the channels go from 1 to 16 though instead of randomized channel numbers.
This is a really solid little shoot'em up. One of the few games I've played here where I was compelled to keep trying to get better. Nice work.
Quite fun, but had a hard time with the controls/view of the game. Liked the idea though with the crowd throwing in weapons, good job!
Unique looking and playing game, though sometimes that unique-ness leads to confusion. I was never really sure what each play did when I was upgrading them.
Hey there! Really awesome retro entry. Loved the music and graphics. Collision boxes seemed just a bit strange compared with what I was expecting from the pixels, but I adjusted pretty quickly. Nice work.
Really great atmospheric art and music. I ended up stuck in a building with no second exit just shooting constantly at zombies coming through the door. Some kind of scoring/win condition would be great.
Very funny approach to the theme. I found it pretty enjoyable although the game to decrease boredom was quite difficult I thought.
Fun idea, and it was executed pretty well!
The theme and graphics for this are pretty cute. The platforming controls could use a little work, but nice job.
This is really simple but surprisingly fun. Would like to see the mechanics expanded on so it doesn't get so repetitive, but for a short play session I quite enjoyed it.
Very nice. I really like the feeling of old school gameboy nostalgia it gives. And the difficulty felt really solid. Awesome work.
Short and sweet, but pretty fun mechanic. Nice job!
This is definitely in my top three I've played so far. What it lacks in depth it makes up for in style. Excellent work.
Very interesting take on a classic shoot-em-up game. I love the weapon variation, but it could really use a slow paced first couple levels to get used to the weapons. Great job!
Awesome art. Would love to play more.
This is a great idea that I just wish worked a bit better in practice. I had a good time with it and would love to see it improved and expanded on.
Couldn't really identify the strategy that is the "best". I just kept getting money and buying lots of bots. Interesting concept, but you probably should have opted out of the Graphics category since you are using a Unity third-person controller model that you did not create.
Solid all around. A good game that rewards replaying and practice. Fun song too.
Really like this concept and it works pretty well having to manage multiple controllable characters. Nice graphics too. Good work!
Awesome work on the graphics and audio. Fun little game, but I agree with other comments that the difficulty curve could use some work.
Looks pretty neat for a game concept, but eventually having more variation or missiles types would help. Controls felt a little off as well. Great job though!
The basic game loop is a good concept, but I found the controls and collisions a bit unintuitive. Congrats on your first entry!
It does seem quite difficult. I agree that multiplayer would be great.
Simple but fun. Nice work!
I agree with other commenters that it is near impossible to dodge the falling rocks... it's just luck if you are under it when it falls.
Pretty cool concept and with a bit more polish it could be a really fun game. As it is I found I was often just waiting for the arrows to get out of my way before I could progress.
Nice work for your first game! I had a couple times where data spawned in locations that were impossible to reach because they were blocked off by the minions. Otherwise this is pretty solid.
I honestly had no idea what I was doing to influence the game outside of just making colors larger.
Excellent job! It's a bit rough around the edges (pun intended) but quite good all-in-all. Could use some balance changes and controls could use some work.
I could not manage to catch any of the humans at all. Pretty funny take on the theme though. Nice work.
Really cool idea. Normally I would complain about controls like this but it fits the game really well and makes navigation the challenge. Nice work.
Got to wave 11 before dying. Fun stuff, but using the grapple to reach the top felt a little stiff on the controls. Great job!
Not bad, a little simple - but looks like you accomplished what you were aiming for in 72 hours. Nice job!
Really solid little game. Great use of mixing up mechanics with your fantasy theme.
Interesting approach with a grid-less battleship style. I like how the probes point out the direction of the nearest enemy ship. Cool mechanic.
Almost had level 3 but gave up when i was slightly at an off angle with no way to quickly correct it... You need some side-boosters that direct your ship laterally or vertically I think. Great job!
This is a really solid entry. The shooting felt pretty good and I really liked the slowly shrinking lighting effect. The controls sometimes stopped responding and I'm not sure why. Nice work though!
Very fun stuff... Its like a complex bop-it played with your keyboard. I was a few seconds away from getting back to earth, and man when those commands back up on you it feels pretty intense. Nice work!
This is one of my favorite games so far for this LD. Excellent job!
Simple idea that is well executed. Fun, but as others have said, the difficulty curve is pretty tough.
Well rounded little game. Fun, funny, looks decent. I did end up getting stuck in geometry after blowing up the military base with the nuke though.
cute... but kiwi fruits are fuzzy too.
Yeah, I would have liked to have more of a "choose your own adventure" feel to the game with multiple endings, but we just ran out of time. That's why I labeled it as an Audio-Visual Novella ;)
Interesting idea, but there are a few things that keep me from enjoying the experience. Control choice would have worked better if there was an indicator on the player model that showed you which direction you were currently facing. When the camera angles switched it was very disorienting because the player model looks the same from all sides. Also, the lighted regions of the maze were not enough of a landmark for me to ever feel like I knew where I was going. Perhaps a smaller maze with better visual landmarks would be more reasonable.
Love it! Mechanically very simple, but it's amazing how much the character designs increased my enjoyment of it overall. Very cute.
That was surprisingly fun. Nice work!
Not bad. I had a few times where I seemed to just bust apart when flying through a pickup... as though I actually collided with it.
Interesting idea. I'm not a huge fan of games like this, but it seemed well made.
omg... drowned chicken made me laugh out loud. Cute idea. The text sections were longer than the actual game though :(
Interesting idea. The writing was kind of all over the place. I didn't really know what my goal was, but I was still compelled to keep playing. Nice work with the text.
Well, that was something... I think I found a bug where I was able to just constantly shoot a laser without needing to click anymore. Really great graphics and audio. Nice work!
This looks so good. Love the art style! The potential for more strategy would be a nice improvement, but for 3 days this is very impressive. Nice work!
Really nice and simple. Got it instantly. Fun too!
Thought it was a pretty solid entry, but could use a bit of polish. Fun idea!
The barrels fall so fast and random that it seems impossible to play this game with any skill. Strange theme decision, but I still had fun with it.
I just got a game going with my brother and it was really fun. Impressive work for a weekend project!
Cowamari Damacy!
Can't seem to run the web version due to java security problems.
Really solid little game. Only took me a few seconds to get the basic premise which is great.
Wow... this is really impressive. Love the art style and the mechanics. I wish there was a way to control your speed though. It was hard to target the balloons with how fast I was moving.
First thing I wanted to do was be able to pick up a soldier and position them in the air to get hit by their own missile! Fun game though :)
Loved the introduction of new mechanics throughout the game. At first I thought it would be pretty repetitive, but I found myself surprised by each new level. Very night work.
Difficulty curve is very odd... I feel like scores will generally be grouped at a single area in the game.
Only complaint is the same as a few others have noted, where the beat doesn't really seem to match with the button presses. Really cute and well done otherwise.
Didn't get a chance to try with multiplayer, but it was still really fun and the mechanics were simple to understand. Nice job!
Very cool. One of the best I've played so far. Love the audio touches when you get pickups. I really enjoy when a game makes the sfx sort of "in tune" with the background music.
