LD22 — Alone

Screaming by kakuremino 2011-12-19T08:17:00

Thanks for the feedback. I removed the requires and just pasted everything into one large file (silly fix, but as long as it works). I uploaded to a new host (hopefully more tolerable) and changed the "Windows" link so it now points to this version.

Screaming by kakuremino 2011-12-20T00:15:00

Yes, it is true that the gameplay is lacking, but hopefully there is some fun to be had experimenting with trying to communicate with the disembodied Screamer and the other inhabitants of the world.

Sadly, I didn't really have the time to tweak the pacing of the game, so the story might seem to drag on before coming to a conclusion, but it is too late to change that now.

Screaming by kakuremino 2011-12-20T11:24:00

I am sorry about that. Hopefully it is fixed now.

Screaming by kakuremino 2012-01-10T01:16:00

Thanks for playing everybody.

I'm sorry that the game didn't work for you rawbits.

Demonpants, one could run the game from source if some ruby implementation is installed (I'm using 1.9) together with the gosu gem (both of which, I believe, are at least available for Mac OS X). This is, of course, a hassle but (hopefully) it would work.

Thank you all for the nice comments and suggestions.

Icefallgames, the sound should help with making a safe choice.

Panopticon by kakuremino 2012-04-25T23:51:00

First of all, I just want to say that I really appreciate all the feedback.

To the people not using Windows: You might be able to run the game from source. What is needed is Ruby 1.9.2 (the game might run in previous versions but I'm not sure) and the Gosu gem (see http://www.libgosu.org/), which is available for Mac OS X, Windows and Linux.

Mach60KAS, I did not want the music to get repetitive so I decided not to loop any of the tracks. I would have liked to do more with the music and sound, but I ran out of time. I also think that periods of silence can be interesting, and when the music stops one might hear quiet noises that were drowned out before (I would have liked for there to be more to hear, but as I said, there wasn't enough time).

LD24 — Evolution

Parthenogenesis by kakuremino 2012-08-27T13:33:00

Sorry about the crappy dowload service. If by "the perimeter of the zone" you mean the dark blue ocean then that's not a bug. You do not get stuck, the movement is just slowed down to a crawl. The creature is not a good swimmer (but its descendants are slightly better).

Parthenogenesis by kakuremino 2012-08-29T12:01:00

Thanks for the comments and criticisms everyone.

Josefnpat, thanks for trying. If you or anyone else wants to go through the hassle, the game should probably run from source if some version of Ruby 1.9 and the Gosu gem (both available for Linux) are present.

Mamick, the radiation minigame should probably (unlike now) give some warning and time to prepare when it is about to begin, but it always appears on timesteps that are multiples of 40 (as stated in the beginning) so it is predictable.

Mes, the goal of the game is to make the creature survive and evolve. To survive the creature needs food and water. The only way to get food is to eat the drumsticks (pressing space when close to it) and the only place to find water is the lake (inner blue circle). I'm sorry the game is so frustrating to restart.

I'll try to release a post-compo version with some minor fixes (instructions screen, painless restart, some warning that the minigame is about to begin and maybe some (hopefully) fun additions to the minigame) within a couple of days.

Parthenogenesis by kakuremino 2012-09-17T11:01:00

Thanks for playing everyone!

Rawbits, the post-compo version contains (among other things) an instructions screen and skippable dying screen. It also indicates more clearly that you are controlling the red dot.

The button-mashing aspect is there. It is useful to mash spacebar when trying to catch food or when drinking, it is also necessary to repeatedly press the left mouse button when playing the minigame.

Dead Man by kakuremino 2013-08-26T17:18:00

Thanks for playing!

Osthekake, the game does indeed crash when trying to "go" somewhere at that part. I've fixed this bug (the rules seem to allow this). The links are updated and now point to the fixed version.

Larzan, the links work for me now. Hopefully it was a temporary problem.

Dead Man by kakuremino 2013-08-30T22:06:00

Thanks for all the nice comments!

Yell0w, I'm not sure what you mean by "downloaded art". No downloaded images are in the game. Almost all the images were hand drawn (by me) and then digitally processed with Gimp. The rest I drew from scratch digitally (mostly Gimp again).

Dead Man by kakuremino 2013-08-30T23:00:00

Almax27, the "look" command (or just "l" for short) will give you a description of the room.

Thanks for the feedback everyone!

Chrome reporting the file as a virus is annoying, but there isn't much I can do about that except tell you that Chrome is just being overzealous and assure you that the file contains nothing malicious. I've seen similar comments on other entries.

Sadly it seems the game does not do a good job of explaining what to do. I've written some hopefully helpful tips in the description that might clear things up.

In essence, the bulk of the game consists of two minigames, one where you are supposed to listen to a "melody" and then match it by alternating between holding/releasing the left mouse button for the appropriate amount of time and pressing the right mouse button when you have replicated the entire melody (remembering not to release the left mouse button before this if the melody ends on a rising pitch). After pressing the right mouse button, three sets of bars will appear, the purple bars represent the actual melody, the green bars represent your attempt, and the red bars represent the difference (i.e. errors) for each part of the melody (thus, in each set there should be an equal number of bars as there were rising/descending parts of the melody). The goal is to get a small enough total error.

The second minigame has to do with connecting symbols with entities. This part can be very confusing. I wrote some tips about this in the description. Short(ish) version: if none of the entities seem to fit the symbol (i.e. if the symbol does not seem to match any of the keywords mentioned under "Associated with:"), the safest bet is to choose the disconnect option. This will give you a point or two (see the numbers in the lower right corner while serving customers). An incorrect guess will result in losing a point. After your points reach certain levels you unlock identification options. The first unlock occurs when you have 3 or more points.

Thanks for playing, everybody!

Marcellus: The game is definitely unplayable if there is no sound at the screen before the bars appear (or after the "Let's try again"). The sound is quite low (the pitch of it that is). Is the game outputting any sound at all (i.e. does the volume mixer in Windows indicate any sound being played)? If not, then there is definitely something wrong.

They Came in the Night by kakuremino 2015-08-29T19:34:00

Thanks for playing everyone!

TackoramaLtd: Packaging up Ruby applications for non-Windows systems has been problematic, though I might look again for a solution.

Waterman7: No need to wait to find words, the once a minute ability is simply there to help if you are stuck. It it is possible to figure out words without using it.
