Beneath the surface with Sir Walter Wuffington by Larzan 2014-05-07T19:48:00
I thought this was a pretty cool idea. You should expand on this and polish it up a bit.
Foon → Ludum Dare Explorer → Users → whalebot

I thought this was a pretty cool idea. You should expand on this and polish it up a bit.
This is a very solid game. Well put together, with a perfect difficulty curve. Excellent work with this.
This is awesome. Well done.
I am the best salesman! Seriously, good job with this. I think the theme link was a bit of a stretch though... I'm not sure what happened on day 2, they said I was fired, and then I came back the next day? Oh well! Great game!
I almost felt like this was more of a free verse poem than anything, the way the words moved with what was happening and changed color.
Haha I honestly don't know how anyone will be able to complete this without the source code. But reading through that was kind of funny anyway (as far as the things you needed to ask to continue). I guess John has some family matters to attend to ;)
Well, I was originally going to rate a 5 in humor because I could swim to spaaaaaaaaace!!!.... and then the octopus got me... I straight up lost it.
Nice work.
I wish the piano track looped, that was a sweet song. It looks like there are multiple treasures you can find. And keys in the walls o_o Overall, nice job, for someone who stresses out about precise platforming, this was a relaxing change of pace.
Good mood and everything. I honestly had no idea where to go though... I just dived and dived... Didn't see any targets, rocks, or mines.
This game is fantastic! I think I managed to take advantage of a bug where I would kill enemies to fill my oxygen so full that it wouldn't go down if I didn't get hurt, but regardless, I just kept going down wanting to see what was at the bottom and I found and destroyed it! Awesome work!
Unfortunately, the sound wasn't working on my browser (that doesn't surprise me). Even without the sound, the mood set up in this game was very good. Nice work with this.
This is a pretty solid game. It runs well and has a good mechanic, although it would be nice to have a little bit more detailed sprites for the character, house, and robots. I thought the mechanic was well implemented, although there technically is no way to lose (although that's not necessarily a bad thing :) ) All things considered, I think it was well done.
I think I want to come back to this game later... I really enjoy these types of puzzles, and you've done it on two levels. You have to figure out what you are so you can last long enough to figure out who is exhibiting traits of another monster that you can frame them as. I still haven't won yet, but this is definitely a game I'd have to write things out to figure out. Awesome work. I only wish the music was a little more ambient/eerie than it is.
I tried playing a few different times to save the people. I never figured out what the pipe I acquired was for. I got to one room that just said "room content" (don't remember the path). A bit easy to get lost, but that's to be expected in text based games. I think the alternate "endings" is a good idea, but the strength of text based games lies partially in the story which I felt wasn't there.
Thought it was your basic platformer up until I saw how to use bombs. Then I just blew the crap out of everything! :) That was pretty fun, but the frame rate seemed to lag pretty significantly. I imagine each of those blocks might have been doing a bit too much causing the game to run a bit slowly. Overall cool dynamic terrain effects.
So, I don't know if there was something wrong, but controls felt completely unresponsive. I literally felt like I was watching a video of someone else play... Groovy audio though.
This seems like it's worth expanding on.
I feel like the drill needs to be a bit faster for this to really be fun. Overall, cool idea for a concept, it was just a little slow game play. (Maybe I didn't use enough drills ;)
Pretty sweet. The graphics have really nice contrast. I would recommend developing this further for the mobile platform.
Saved the Tipanic. I am awesome.
Dat music tho... Seriously. the mood was with this one. Zombie sprites were great. I can't say I was a huge fan of the "fight scenes", but it worked. Not sure where I got my $2 from to revive myself ;) The shooting king zombies put me in a situation I couldn't get out of... And I guess my head is a shotgun... Pretty sweet dude. Good work.
This is actually surprisingly fun. Using the classic triangulating technique to find exactly where treasure is located is very satisfying. Nice work with this.
Those planes sure do drop a lot of bombs... Can't say I got very far in this game. That being said, I like the style, and the audio fit well.
The checkpoint system is VERY nice, especially when I'm sliding into those stupid spikes on those trickier jumps.
Something was wrong with my audio. It was all out of sync (like way late or something...). Good work.
Played all the way through! You created a very good balance of allowing the player to make enough progress with the upgrades to want to continue playing to the end.
It looks like this didn't quite get finished. It would be nice to have some kind of simple ambient audio. The idea of switching between the two spaces two navigate the maze is pretty awesome. (Took a while for me to find stuff :) ). Although I'm almost positive I got all 4 artifacts, and the wall still didn't let me through :/. Also, when you switch to the subspace after getting an artifact, the artifact reappears.
Good first entry. I think the low frame rate might have been a little much for me though. Keep it up!
Ha every time the guy said he had to go back down, I was like, "Uh no I think you can retire now". Silly man...
Man those spiders are OP... Sweet lighting/shadow effect.
Oh yeah, and watch out for the snakes... right... I'll do that... (Drops nuts)
Great twist. I don't know why others don't think this hits the theme. The twist is about as close to the theme as you can get. Jumping felt a little wonky sometimes, but meh 48 hours :) You've created a good experience with simple gameplay.
Thanks everyone to has played it so far. Glad you enjoy it. If it helps you remember the controls:
(from left to right)
Z X C
jump spin bend
Red Yellow Green
Now go make dad proud! (and don't get eaten...)
Well the formatting of those controls got screwed up so let's try this:
(from left to right)
Red: Z (jump)
Yellow: X (spin)
Green: C (bend)
For those interested, my high score is 158227. 1000 imaginary points to anyone who can beat it!
@Andy Gainey
Thanks for playing! You actually do have some choices (although they aren't made completely obvious I'll admit).
-Doing any move at any time will win over the crowd (unless it is done in the incorrect spotlight, they really don't like that...). However, doing the move outside of the spotlight makes a ton of noise that will wake up the monster.
-As you realized, the jump wins over the crowd the most, but it also makes the most noise if you don't land in the spotlight. It is also worth the most points. (high risk/reward)
-You *can* placate the monster by simply not moving (making less noise) or doing fewer special moves. However, this tends to make the audience very unhappy (especially your dad, who worked so hard to make those shoes for you...)
-As far as the spotlights go, I realize that this game is not incredibly deep (due to the 48 hour limit). So you'll notice that as the game progresses, it gets harder and harder to get to a spotlight. This was intentional, so you don't get a stupidly awesome high score and then never play again.
I will be implementing online high scores in the future, so that should add more incentive for replay :)
At times I felt the controls were a little wonky, but this may have been my browser acting up... -_-
Short sweet and to the point. Thanks for making this.
Pretty fun game, although didn't really fit the theme. That being said, the computer is better at boxing than I am...
WTF. Box. This game deserves an award.
It's a copter clone. But, for your first web game, you have to start somewhere. Great job implementing this classic game :) (also add a keyboard option ;) )
Nice work with this. I like the twist you introduce by letting the player be the monster.
Pretty nifty little game. I liked letting the zombies build up on a platform and then just tear through them like a boss.
Are you kidding me? Double spikes on a slant? ... -_- Sadly, I could not get past this jump before I rage quit. Comic style is awesome. Music seemed to be mocking me after my 50th+ try...
Thanks to you, I now have a new least favorite aquatic mammal... Beautiful music, fantastic graphics, holy difficulty batman. You definitely have the addicting short game play element going for you. I managed to get 8 pages of my documents before giving up on studying orcas forever.
Amazing pixel art. Overall great story telling. Really well done with this.
Not bad. Although I wasn't sure if there was some ultimate objective or not.
Man this is intense! Nice work!
Pretty neat. I ended up spamming the 1,2,3,4 buttons to try and get what I wanted :D
Good job with this. Would work well on mobile.
First augmented reality game I've seen for a ludum dare entry. Nice work!
The combined puzzles... very tricky. Nice work!
I like the random mumblings of the sleeping people :D
While some people struggle to make one simple game for this jam, you managed to pull off making 5 (6 counting the Game HUB). Nice work! I just wish there was a little more predictability with which power-ups you were getting so you could have more control over keeping yourself alive.
First Android Ludum Dare entry I've tried. Nice work!
I'm just not good enough to save everyone!!! :'(
This was pretty sweet.
Well put together. Although I'd say the tie-in to the theme was a bit slapped on. Good tower defense game though!
I couldn't move with the mouse but I was still able to get to the point where you play chords... That was awesome.
I think I may have developed a serious case of road rage thanks to this game... I just wanted to get the bonus so badly!!
Pretty funny :) Took me about ten tries to figure out how the heck to make my burners work, but once I figured it out, it was a decent game mechanic.
You're very good at this story telling business...
I can't even imagine hardcore mode on this... Nice game!
This would be great to expand on. Generate dynamic "quests" to get somewhere, and have the player solve them each time. Regardless, great work!
I think I may have been on the last level before I rage quit... This game is really well done, the music and everything works so well together. And something about the way the spiders moved I really liked. That being said, holy crap some of those levels are hard.
I love this style of writing. Great work!
That organ music... haha :) a bit weird
Very polished. Nicely done.
I'm not sure I fully grasped what the switches were actually doing when I switched them, but I still made it through!
Well I was doing great until I managed to get a segfault.. :( Oh well, I thought the mechanic was actually really good, even if it was taking me forever to get those stupid animals to follow the trail I left for them...
Nice work!
Excellent writing. I thoroughly enjoyed that.
Great level design. I'd recommend removing the press any key to continue part and just put the player in the next room though. No reason to have the player do that.
Stupid bunnies... go where I want you to go! Nice job :)
This was pretty fun :)
Took me a bit, but I finally figured out the strategy. Nice work!
Haha I had no idea what I was doing, but that guy seemed pretty happy about me fist bumping him!
This is really good. This is really hard. This is super groovy. My poor hand... :(
Those ranged guys owned my face so hard... Nice work :)
52160 BAM! Nice work :)
The art style of the worlds is pretty cool. I couldn't figure out how to get the grandpa to connect though...
Well done brofes! I won't spoil it for the rest of you, but this was pretty awesome.
This is excellent. Classic example of really good level design. I managed to save everyone after a bunch of retries! I would seriously consider porting this to the mobile platform. It would do really well I think.
To those of you who have already played, I really appreciate the feedback. To be honest, I was kind of hoping no one would play it in its unfinished state :P . Oh well, it looks like I somehow managed to still convey the mood I was going for.
I have however uploaded a new post-comp. version of the game. It is in its full polished glory, and I feel pretty good about it :) I'd love it if you gave the new one a try.
Obviously, I'll keep the old one around for judging purposes, so please make sure my ratings reflect the original. Thanks!
P.S. There is a part past the night scene where the girl follows you. Hint: Look for a scenic place to stand with her.
Mad props! This is probably the best Java entry I've seen in a Ludum Dare! Challenging but not impossible gameplay, and very well designed levels. Graphics and music were great! Nice work!
This is a fantastic interpretation of the theme! I didn't even realize that the three worlds were actually the same world (just at different levels of asteroid mediation) and when I realized that... well, mind=blown... Excellent graphics and all around a fantastic job with this!
This was quite well done.
Excellent job conveying the mood you wanted. Had to read your description for the tie in of the theme. I suppose that works :) Good job!
I really liked the feel of this. I only wish it had some background music.
Nice work with this. Great interpretation of the theme.
It seemed like I only had to transfer fire to win the game. It would have been more interesting if I had to work harder to keep more of a balance. Nice work though!
You should definitely polish this up a bit for mobile. This game was very entertaining to play through.
Sweet music.
Once again, a game is made that makes my brain and fingers mortal enemies. Groovy feel you've put together. Nice work!
Neat concept. Impressed you were able to create all those different styles so quickly!
Nice work with this!
Once again I am made to regret how poor I am at platformers...
Hunt Dragons ALL NIGHT LONG!!
This was really cool. I wasn't very good, but just drawing paths and rotating around was neat.
So I realized that just hitting space kills the robot (I don't have to be next to the robot). Just about broke my space bar I spammed it so hard :D
ROFLCOPTR THE SOURCE!!! Best language evaaaa!
Very polished.
This was pretty sweet. I loved flying through the planets.
Good concept, could use some more polish though.
I'm winner! Shoot they should nominate me for world leader me thinks... ;)
Sometimes I wish I was better at platformers... nice work with this.
I'm a bit ashamed to admit how much time I spent playing this...
Couldn't really navigate the menus effectively.
I loved playing the real life version of this game, but that only had one ball... X( Nice work with this! It feels and looks really good!
Nailed it with the literal interpretation of this theme! Nice work!
A bit frustrating when you get the blocks stuck in a way you can't move them. Other than that, I feel this was done pretty well. Great music!
This is great! I only wish I could move a little quicker. Overall this is very polished and well put together.
Controls are a bit janky, but was still kind of fun wall jumping all over the place. Good job!
Lol shots fired with this one haha. Great execution as usual, other than a few physics bugs with stacking boxes, this game was absolutely great.
Haha, this is pretty similar to my interpretation of the theme :) I really like how the monsters and traps you choose show up in the hero's path. I only wish that I could have actually done the final fight myself! Great job!
I accidentally tried to go on the boat when it showed up, and I got stuck outside the level... Needless to say, I think the souls like me more than they should. Weeee!
Cute :) Although to be honest, I didn't see much tie in with the theme other than your picture as a ghost, but meh, it was still fun :)
Nice work as usual NAL! Always have loved seeing the unique mechanics you come up with ever since the old GameMaker days. This one's a gem.
I like this a lot. Good use of theme and awesome style in that intro. I love the use of the text and environment to tell story. Audio was a bit meh, but you only have time for so much!
The tail whipping is awesome! Would have loved some sounds too. Good job!
haha what even is this? Very entertaining, but oh man the COOOLOOOORRRSSSS... :O
My only complaint would be that the gameplay got a little slow sometimes with the speeds of the characters. Everything else was amazing. Great work!
Black screen and epic music. That's all I have right now after the unity loading screen.
Jeez... I don't have the patience for this kind of game haha. That being said, nice work with it. I love the pico-8 games :)
Inventory selection was a bit janky for some reason, but the art is gorgeous, and I liked some of the free verse poetry happening in the dialogue.
Nice concept. It got very difficult to grab light pieces when raging since I'd land on a corner, but overall this is pretty good.
This is an absolutely stellar entry. Well freaking done.
The chat text was awesome haha. Unfortunately, I felt like I had very little control over the outcome of the battle, but maybe that's the feel you were going for (being a measly pawn). Good job!
This is pretty sweet. It would be interesting to see the chat take sides. When I played everyone ganged up against the one monster :D
I really liked the concept of this one, but I couldn't figure out how to change to more powerful monsters? I just killed all the players as a blob!
This is a fantastic entry. It's one of those games that speaks to a deeper problem and lets people experience a side of life they wouldn't normally experience. And screw that get away driver... he didn't help even once...
This is pretty good for a first entry! I hope to see more from you in future game jams!
Haha this was ridiculous! I love the jumping around, even as janky as it is. Definitely difficult, but I thought the story was hilarious!
The control setup was a bit weird, and the music loop was reeeally short which made it a bit annoying. Not sure what the objective was, and the menu didn't show any text?
Stupid crazy parents... Good job!
I am one of the few to figure out how to download, set up, and run your game ;) It's cute, and pretty fun to level a building with lizard-fu. Nice work!
Not bad. I really like the style. It didn't seem like there was anything to accomplish other than just surviving which was relatively trivial. All in all, good entry.
Not bad. It would be nice to be able to move through your own fire columns to collect the souls it destroyed, but overall, I enjoyed it.
I dig the art style. Attacking things didn't seem to work too well for me with the first attack, but I like the recharge on the attacks.
The game is beautiful and very interesting. Unfortunately, I see almost no tie-in with the theme :( Regardless, good work with this!
Haha I love the "juicer" effect when I squash all those poor people :D Wish it had audio, but I enjoyed it!
It definitely seems odd that when you get hit by a mine, your score resets, but the difficulty stays the same compared to the beginning... Other than that, it's a fun little game.
Nice game! I don't know that I've ever seen a visual novel with battle mechanics in it.
I actually really like the mechanic behind this game, although I think more could be done to make it "feel" better. Other than the theme tie-in being a little forced, I thought this was pretty solid. Nice work!
I really like the health of the monster being shown as the segments. It has the side effect of making the game a tiny bit easier as you die :) Great job! My only criticism would be to start the game with a keypress rather than a mouse click since the gameplay is only key presses.
